- 1:58Speaker 2: I love that motivated.
- 1:59Speaker 2: He's a husband, dad, paul, son, brother, friend.
- 2:03Speaker 2: He loves being a personal car driver.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It's been a dream since he was young, very young, a very young man.
- 2:10Speaker 2: So he is happy to share his experience and expertise to anyone interested in connecting to the industry.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So, derek, thank you so much for being on the podcast and sharing your journey.
- 2:23Speaker 2: So let me ask you something Tell us about how you got into this into your journey.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So let me ask you something Tell us about how you got into this into your journey.
- 2:29Speaker 3: As you said previously, I've always loved the whole concept of truck driving since I was a little kid and I was actually, in my humble opinion, working a dead-end job at one point in time in my life, and it was always, again, a dream that I wanted to fulfill, and my wife at that particular time was like let's take a stab at it, go ahead and follow your dreams.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So I ended up attending a truck driving school and it just progressed from there, and it's been a battle up and down, but it's worth it if it's truly something that you have a passion for and I am a truck driver.
- 3:07Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So how long have you been a truck driver?
- 3:12Speaker 3: I started this journey in what is it 2018?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, 2018.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 2: That's awesome, because that's actually when I retired from IBM in 2018.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And I started my journey in doing our business Legal Shield full time, so yeah so that's awesome that we decided passion.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I tell people, follow your passion.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I'm still somewhat to some drivers maybe a little early in the game, but you're going to experience if you decide to follow this particular career path.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You're going to experience a lot.
- 3:52Speaker 3: It's a lot, there is a lot to it, but it can be very gratifying, very rewarding if you stick with it, because it has its highs and its lows.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and the traveling that you're doing all across the country, which is great, so let me ask you something.
- 4:09Speaker 2: So what are some of the top safety tips every commercial driver should know?
- 4:15Speaker 3: I would have to say, be very vigilant at watching everything.
- 4:20Speaker 3: You have to be aware at all times, at all times.
- 4:25Speaker 3: That's one thing.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I can't stress that enough because it's always horrific.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I know sometimes you see on the news or you may be traveling down the highways and you see these accidents and whatnot.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It may be minor to a truck driver, but it's going to be very damaging to a smaller vehicle.
- 4:45Speaker 3: So that's one.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I want to stress that being mindful of your surroundings, starting with that.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But I guess it just depends on what direction you want to go, whether or not you want to be a owner, operator, or if you just want to run for a company or what have you.
- 5:02Speaker 3: It all depends on what avenue you choose to take them on.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And you said you've been doing it since 2018.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So you're learning all the ins and outs of the different.
- 5:14Speaker 3: So that's, great.
- 5:15Speaker 2: But how do you stay, how do you maintain a healthy lifestyle while you're on the road?
- 5:21Speaker 3: That's a challenge Because you have so many.
- 5:25Speaker 3: You have so many unhealthy places right there off of the highway, so you have to be mindful because other than that, you'll eat a lot of fried foods.
- 5:32Speaker 3: There's a lot of fried foods, so I do a lot of walking when I shut down for the evening, or at times we might hit a gym up here and there where we can, one of the little fitness centers.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But it's something that you have to stay mindful of.
- 5:47Speaker 3: You have to be vigilant with it because, if not, them pounds jump on you because you're eating a lot of unhealthy foods, a lot of the food that we do eat.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Now my wife, because she does ride with me we have set up a little system, for lack of a better term, in our semi, so she does a lot of cooking, so she prepares a lot of healthier foods for us, but and on the road readily accessible, it's a lot of fast food, so you have to just balance your intake of that stuff.
- 6:20Speaker 3: So a lot of movement, a lot of movement.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's what I was.
- 6:25Speaker 2: It's not just you on the road in the truck.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Listen, I do the same thing.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I'm like oh, there's Wendy's, let me get a burger.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and they're everywhere.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Right there, off of the expressways or off the highways, you're going to see a Hardee's.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Wendy's, burger King, mcdonald's, something along those lines.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't want to consume?
- 6:48Speaker 2: that every day I remember Hardee's God they don't even have them here in Georgia anymore.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I haven't seen any.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I did like Hardee's.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So let me ask you another question.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So what are some effective strategies for managing fatigue during the long haul, like how do you maintain not being tired, falling asleep?
- 7:07Speaker 3: One I get proper rest Throughout my work week.
- 7:11Speaker 3: What I do is a lot of times I don't stay up, I don't do a whole lot of watching television, I don't have a whole lot of idle time, so that when I can get enough rest for my next, my next journey, wherever it may take, I don't stretch myself out more than I can handle, and it just it'll vary from person to person, but I try not to drive over nine hours, nine and a half hours.
- 7:38Speaker 3: What I can do within that nine, nine and a half hours.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and I did the proper amount of sleep.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And that takes discipline, because my other guests they do, they do 11 hours each.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I drive 11 hours.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and it'll vary from person to person, your limitations, but for me, just so that I know that I have enough time to unwind from what it is I'm doing on a daily, because, again, it's a constant there is no relaxing, for lack of a better term you can get out on a stretch of highway for a while and it'd be a lot of space between you and the next vehicle, but you're always having to be maintained and be aware, and so for that I just highly recommend a lot of rest, get enough, get proper rest.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And another thing when driving, try not to eat a lot of heavy foods.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I eat a lot of vegetables or fruits, yeah, because they don't weigh heavy on me and I'm not hungry.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I don't eat a lot of snack foods, junk foods, the sugary foods.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I don't do them because the sugar is a rush and when you're, when you crash on sugar, you'll find yourself sleeping.
- 8:45Speaker 3: It may wake you up for a short period of time, but it's going to.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Your body will crash after a period.
- 8:51Speaker 3: So I don't drink a lot of sodas or sweet juices or anything like that.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I try to stay as healthy as I possibly can with reference to the food and beverages that I take in Now.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I drink a lot of coffee, though.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I'll be the first to admit yeah, I drink a lot of coffee.
- 9:11Speaker 2: That's good and you actually are maintaining a healthy lifestyle by what you do as far as your rest and eating properly.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 2: You get that little fast food stuff there.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah, every now and then you slide in a little treat here and there.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, exactly, I know Rache is with you.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Rache is actually my Mary Kay girl, but how?
- 9:32Speaker 3: Show your face, babe.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Show your face.
- 9:34Speaker 3: We're going to let you show your face.
- 9:35Speaker 3: This is my-.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Oh, let's see, that's my lovely wife Shea.
- 9:39Speaker 3: That's great.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I love it that she's traveling with you, but that is actually my-.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And so you're connected.
- 9:47Speaker 2: That was my next question.
- 9:48Speaker 2: How do you stay connected with your loved ones while on the road?
- 9:52Speaker 2: How do you stay connected with your loved ones while on the road so you ride she rides with you, right?
- 9:56Speaker 3: yeah, yes, she does.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Now, when I initially started this, she didn't.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Covid changed a lot of things for us as far as the brick and mortar, her.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Thankfully, her job allows her to work from home, um, and so for that she's able to travel with me, but prior to it was difficult at times, because you have to have that relationship, I'll say you have to have that bond with whom you're with because you're going to spend some time away.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Now you don't necessarily have to have the long haul and out like we are, because I, let's see when was the last time we were in Georgia?
- 10:33Speaker 3: And I live in Atlanta, georgia.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I haven't been in Georgia since the end of February, oh, wow, okay, and that's where all of my things are.
- 10:44Speaker 3: But no, I wouldn't be able to do that if my wife weren't with me.
- 10:48Speaker 3: She has been a great support, great support.
- 10:51Speaker 3: You got to have a good support system, oh absolutely, absolutely, has been a great support, great support.
- 10:56Speaker 3: You got to have a good support system.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely, yeah, you got to have.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You got to have a great support system.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So what about with the kids?
- 10:59Speaker 2: How do you?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Are they with you when you go on these?
- 11:02Speaker 3: My seven-year-old Devin.
- 11:05Speaker 3: He does ride with us to home school.
- 11:07Speaker 3: However, my other kids, they're grown.
- 11:09Speaker 3: So I have a 16 year old and he's in Atlanta.
- 11:14Speaker 3: He lives with his sister, my middle daughter, and I would again, that's a part of my support If I didn't have a suitable place for my son, then my wife wouldn't be able to go when he was convenient for him to be able to stay with his sister and he could attend the school that he attends.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And it was just everything fit together and it allowed her to get on the truck with me and ride with me.
- 11:35Speaker 3: And we've been all over the united states and it's been very enjoyable because you can live with your spouse in the same house for years.
- 11:45Speaker 3: But it's different when you're on the truck.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And I say that it's different when you're on the truck.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And I say that it's different when you're on the truck because you're in one room 24-7.
- 11:54Speaker 3: So it's, you know, you build up even more, you know stronger relationship, in my humble opinion, because you get to know your spouse better and we've got to learn each other a lot better.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Even it's just different, I don't know.
- 12:11Speaker 3: It's been a nice journey.
- 12:14Speaker 3: My wife is definitely my friend.
- 12:16Speaker 2: She is my friend.
- 12:17Speaker 2: That is awesome.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It's funny because my other couple they're truck drivers.
- 12:21Speaker 2: They actually went to school and Rache probably know her, but Cami actually went to school to be a truck driver, so she became a truck driver, but her husband actually did his job.
- 12:29Speaker 2: So they're together and they said it's like a love story.
- 12:31Speaker 2: They know each other.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Oh, wow, yeah, it's awesome, it's awesome.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm so glad that you was able to come on, because I wanted to tell people it's not just one truck driver, the male, but also their wife, their other partner.
- 12:46Speaker 2: They can actually do this too.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, years ago I remember all truck drivers is actually just the male, so now there's a lot more female drivers, but now couples yes.
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's what I love about being a couple and doing this.
- 13:00Speaker 2: What are the pain points and struggles of being a commercial truck driver?
- 13:05Speaker 3: Going back to what we were initially talking about the being away that sometimes miss things that you would have ordinarily attended, or you miss family.
- 13:14Speaker 3: For instance, I don't see family as much as I used to, and it's not always a good season.
- 13:21Speaker 3: The seasons aren't always good, and I'll say that.
- 13:24Speaker 3: To say this again, you got to be ready for the highs and lows.
- 13:26Speaker 3: The market fluctuates all the time, and so you just have to.
- 13:30Speaker 3: You have to be ready for the transitions.
- 13:32Speaker 3: That's all.
- 13:33Speaker 3: It's always about preparation.
- 13:34Speaker 3: You prepare yourself for today, dealing with today, but also for tomorrow.
- 13:39Speaker 3: That's about the best way I can explain.
- 13:42Speaker 3: One of our biggest pitfalls has been keeping up with our finances, because so much can come at you at one time, and it's just one of those situations where you just got to be mindful of your expenses because everything falls on you.
- 13:57Speaker 3: So I just say, be mindful of the areas that you're operating in, keeping up with the market and fuel prices.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Those are two of the most important issues that we've had to contend with this industry the market and fuel.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's put a lot of companies out of business.
- 14:17Speaker 3: So I think that's been two of our our issues that we've always had to keep in mind.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and that that's a good.
- 14:26Speaker 2: That's a good start as far as the fuel, because the fuel prices are up and down and just trying to get that in an expense.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Right so, but no, I appreciate you telling us about that.
- 14:37Speaker 2: So what about commercial?
- 14:39Speaker 2: How do you cope with stress and isolation during those extended trips?
- 14:42Speaker 2: I know you say you do exercise and walking and-.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to get your me time.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Still, you have to get your me time and that just to unwind, and that's what I was saying.
- 14:54Speaker 3: I'll take a moment to myself and, if it's just in that, taking that walk around the the area that I'm in or what have you?
- 15:00Speaker 3: Or sometimes we may pull off on the side there, especially in virginia.
- 15:05Speaker 3: It's so beautiful in virginia and we can pull off.
- 15:08Speaker 3: They have very various scenic routes that you can take and places where you can pull off and and we just take walks individually and collectively, just where you take your moment to decompress and unwind.
- 15:21Speaker 2: That's great.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I know you said you had LegalShield, which actually helps protect you.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Tell us about that.
- 15:27Speaker 2: You said you just had a situation with that, because I was actually Okay.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I was in the Carolina.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I keep LegalShield.
- 15:33Speaker 3: By the way, if you are a commercial truck driver, or even just a regular for any reason, legalshield is a good thing to have.
- 15:41Speaker 3: It is a team of lawyers that are on standby at all times.
- 15:44Speaker 3: That's what I can put.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Well thank you.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I've had LegalShield for years.
- 15:50Speaker 3: I was involved in an accident in the Carolinas in South Carolina, where a motorist and I do have dash cams, but the motorist was implying that I had cut them off and whatnot and they tried to take legal action against myself and my company.
- 16:08Speaker 3: But legal shield stepped in from the onset and they took care of it for me.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 16:15Speaker 3: That was again.
- 16:16Speaker 3: It's a team of lawyers that are on standby at all times.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Thank you, and it's peace of mind.
- 16:21Speaker 2: It's peace of mind.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yes, it is, yes, it is.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Even if you're in an accident, that 24 hour just tapping, and I hope you have that?
- 16:27Speaker 3: That's it.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yes, I do.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yes, I do, yes, I do.
- 16:31Speaker 2: On the phone to be able to talk to that officer.
- 16:34Speaker 2: So, but no, that's great and thank you for being a member of Legal Share.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, so tell me a little bit.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Tell me something about your.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Dnr trucking company Tell us about I apologize, yeah, your car.
- 16:48Speaker 3: I apologize, I didn't.
- 16:50Speaker 3: I didn't get a chance to hear your question.
- 16:53Speaker 3: My phone, the internet, was going in and out.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Okay, so DNR Motivated Transportation.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Tell us a little bit about the DNR Motivated Transportation DNR that's Derek and Rasheed, and we are motivated.
- 17:08Speaker 3: We are motivated.
- 17:09Speaker 3: We talked about various names, but this is something that we are.
- 17:15Speaker 3: We have collaborated.
- 17:16Speaker 3: My wife is.
- 17:16Speaker 3: She is behind the scenes.
- 17:19Speaker 3: It's good to have somebody on your team yeah yeah, she helps me out a lot on the as far as my books are concerned.
- 17:26Speaker 3: She does a lot of trip planning for me.
- 17:30Speaker 3: My wife, yes, my buddy, that's awesome.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and again, this is something because this wasn't my wife's dream, this is not what she wanted to do.
- 17:39Speaker 3: She supported me all the way, but for her to be involved is in the capacity that she is today, she's like it's awesome.
- 17:46Speaker 3: It's awesome, but did that?
- 17:48Speaker 3: So we taught again, we tossed around various names and what have you.
- 17:51Speaker 3: But when she got a little bit more involved and said okay, I'm going to go ahead and ride with you, I'm going to get on the truck with you and experience what you're experiencing, it became DNR motivated, derek and Rashe we're motivated.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I love it.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I love it, yeah, because my WD Pearson says that's for Wanda.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Dennis Pearson, no shit.
- 18:12Speaker 2: So having them have an access to be able to work with each other, that's really what matters.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But no, definitely, yeah, I love it.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I love what you're doing here, and I know Rache put a plug into her.
- 18:25Speaker 2: She does Mary Kay as well, so she's next to me, wanda, you need anything.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I said yeah, and to be able to have that mobility where you can do it wherever you are and get it out there, I appreciate it.
- 18:38Speaker 3: It will definitely bring out the entrepreneurial in you, yeah.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:43Speaker 3: And she's yeah.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but you talk about the collaboration and the collaboration.
- 18:48Speaker 2: That's actually why I created this podcast Ready Set Collaborate, because you never know who you're going to have to collaborate with.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And even like networking, I'm sure you talk to people.
- 19:03Speaker 3: So having access to that is so important.
- 19:05Speaker 3: It's so fun because even in her profession, she's able to interact and meet people that would ordinarily be out of her spectrum because of the range or the distance between.
- 19:16Speaker 3: So she's made a number of connections over the road.
- 19:19Speaker 3: It's just been fantastic.
- 19:21Speaker 3: You're going to have good and your bad, but it's been an awesome journey.
- 19:24Speaker 2: That's great.
- 19:25Speaker 2: It's been an awesome journey.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Derek, I am so happy to hear I can just see the smile on your face that you're enjoying having your wife next to you when you go on these long hauls and even your son, the seven-year-old son.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I can't believe he's seven.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I remember when he was just one.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'm like oh, my God.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Yeah, he's saying I'm going to tell you now, and that's been an issue too with my son.
- 19:46Speaker 3: The kids think the little McDonald's Happy Meal type deal you have to be, you have to watch, I have to watch that too.
- 19:53Speaker 3: So it's a lot that we contend with with reference to health.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Health is a must in this profession.
- 19:58Speaker 3: It is a must because you're sitting.
- 20:01Speaker 3: You know you're moving because of the truck, but you're sitting all for hours on end and it's easy to snack when everybody's metabolism is different.
- 20:10Speaker 3: But you can put some pounds on if you're not mindful because you're not moving.
- 20:14Speaker 3: So again, I'm going to stress it yeah, definitely exercise, move around.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah, just move around and eat healthy.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 20:23Speaker 2: How can people get in touch with you as far as you have your own company?
- 20:27Speaker 2: Is there a way that they can get in touch?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Okay, email.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Yes, yes, my email is DNRmotivatedTransportation.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I want to make certain because we have more than one.
- 20:39Speaker 3: What did the company email?
- 20:40Speaker 3: I got my secretary looking it up.
