- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good next to you.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way. It's Sonnya
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit. It's a Thursday. Thank
- 0:13Speaker 1: you for joining us here on 987. Hello, it is
- 0:16Speaker 1: yours truly, Joakim Gomez, keeping you company. What a show
- 0:19Speaker 1: we've got lined up for you. Loads of prizes coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: your way, including round 4 of SingTel Grab Back Magic.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Singapore's number one hit music station.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And I got to say, just counting down 5 more
- 0:34Speaker 1: days before Leiwei is in town and her Matter of
- 0:37Speaker 1: time tour actually kicked off already in Hong Kong. She
- 0:41Speaker 1: looked amazing in red. She was interacting with fans, playing
- 0:44Speaker 1: all your favorite songs. She's here in Singapore 19th of May,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and I'm very glad. If I'm not wrong, the first
- 0:52Speaker 1: time she was here in Singapore.
- 0:54Speaker 1: She performed over at the Pasir Panjang Power Station. Then
- 0:57Speaker 1: she performed at Arena at Expo for her 2nd time.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Third time's the charm. I'm very happy we have a
- 1:03Speaker 1: venue fitting of Lowe's talents and musicality. It's right at
- 1:08Speaker 1: the indoor stadium. I'm just crossing my fingers. The sound
- 1:10Speaker 1: will be amazing, but knowing her sound crew, if they
- 1:13Speaker 1: can make her sound good at arena over at Expo,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm very.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm sure they'll make her sound good over at the
- 1:18Speaker 1: Singapore Indoor Stadium. So to get you in the mood
- 1:21Speaker 1: and get you all excited, how about one of her
- 1:23Speaker 1: songs that went absolutely viral. If you enjoy playing the
- 1:27Speaker 1: game Wordle, you might be happy to know that in
- 1:30Speaker 1: the US, Jimmy Fallon's company, production company, they are gonna
- 1:36Speaker 1: turn it into a TV game show.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I don't know why we're clapping, but maybe, who knows,
- 1:45Speaker 1: they might open it to international television stations, and here
- 1:48Speaker 1: at Media Corp, we could even stage our very own
- 1:50Speaker 1: Singaporean version as well. So, if I'm not wrong, the
- 1:54Speaker 1: history of Wordle actually began in the year 2021. Software engineer,
- 2:00Speaker 1: his name is Josh Wardle. He created the game and
- 2:05Speaker 1: he sold it to the New York Times for a
- 2:07Speaker 1: low seven-figure sum.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Um, it's not been revealed the total amount yet, but
- 2:12Speaker 1: people are speculating it's somewhere within $1 million to $3 million. I,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I don't know whether Josh Wardle undervalue this game because
- 2:23Speaker 1: everyone I know around me is playing it. I'm still
- 2:25Speaker 1: busy playing Mobile Legends. So, all we know is there'll
- 2:28Speaker 1: be a cash prize of the television show. Contestants will
- 2:31Speaker 1: go head to head, and it's currently in production and
- 2:34Speaker 1: in the planning stages. So the
- 2:36Speaker 1: The moment it gets staged, do not be surprised if
- 2:39Speaker 1: you see a TikTok account with Wordle the game being
- 2:42Speaker 1: staged and produced in the US. So yeah, I hope
- 2:45Speaker 1: they bring it to Singapore sometime soon because this is
- 2:48Speaker 1: a game I'm very sure most Singaporeans might not mind
- 2:52Speaker 1: going to a television station like Media Corp to play
- 2:55Speaker 1: for a cash prize. It's amazing. 669-11987. I'm Gonna open
- 3:00Speaker 1: the phone lines right now. I want you to give
- 3:02Speaker 1: your school.
- 3:03Speaker 1: a shout out. Whether you're a student or maybe even
- 3:07Speaker 1: a teacher, principal, you could be the canteen auntie or uncle, anyone. 669-119-87. Again,
- 3:15Speaker 1: Sonia and I, we set out on a mission to
- 3:19Speaker 1: collect all 400+ schools that we have here in Singapore.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Will it happen? I don't know, but it's looking good
- 3:26Speaker 1: because for most days and most weeks since January,
- 3:30Speaker 1: We've been getting different schools, so we are definitely celebrating that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: So again, call us right now, 669-119-87. The biggest takeaway
- 3:39Speaker 1: from you. You get to hear your voice on 987.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Practice your conversation skills and also request for your favorite
- 3:47Speaker 1: song to play right here on Singapore's number one hit
- 3:50Speaker 1: music station.
- 3:52Speaker 1: 987. hello, what's your name? My name is Kaylee. Ayo, hello,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you sweetheart, and what level are you in this year, Kaylee?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Primary one. Primary 1 of which school? Jurong Primary School.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Jurong Primary School. OK. Given how you're in primary.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Everyone, it's your first time attending a school like this.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Are you enjoying life in Jurong Primary School so far? Good.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And what is nice about Jurong Primary School? The food.
- 4:19Speaker 1: The food. What's your favorite stall to go to in
- 4:21Speaker 1: the canteen? Star nuggets.
- 4:27Speaker 1: OK, and what has been your favorite subject so far, Kaylee? Math. Math. OK,
- 4:32Speaker 1: hopefully you're very good at it. Kaylee, let's give you
- 4:35Speaker 1: a song for you and your classmates over at Jurong
- 4:37Speaker 1: Primary School. What song can I play for you? Touch
- 4:41Speaker 1: my cat's eye. Touch my cat's eye. Is it going
- 4:44Speaker 1: out to any of your friends? Do you want to
- 4:46Speaker 1: say anything to them on 987? No.
- 4:51Speaker 1: OK, Kyle, thank you so much for your call. You
- 4:53Speaker 1: have a great day in school, OK. So, a few
- 4:55Speaker 1: days ago, there was a sign over at Starbucks Singapore's
- 4:59Speaker 1: East Coast outlet where they said because they are slowly
- 5:03Speaker 1: transitioning towards halal certification, they will no longer allow dogs
- 5:08Speaker 1: or pets at both indoor and outdoor seating areas, to
- 5:13Speaker 1: which
- 5:14Speaker 1: Because it's East Coast Park, and I run there a lot,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I do see a lot of pet owners walking their
- 5:21Speaker 1: fur babies and all that, and pet owners are going, what?
- 5:25Speaker 1: What what do you mean? This has been going on
- 5:27Speaker 1: for so long, why, why change it now? So I
- 5:30Speaker 1: think with the heated debate online, which I will not
- 5:32Speaker 1: touch on because it can get a little bit sensitive, um,
- 5:35Speaker 1: Starbucks have removed that sign and they said,
- 5:38Speaker 1: OK, you know what? Business as usual for a while.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We apologize for the confusion and we are reviewing our operations. So,
- 5:45Speaker 1: there you go. Uh, so do take note for East
- 5:47Speaker 1: Coast Park Starbucks outlet, you still can bring your fur
- 5:49Speaker 1: pets and fur babies inside and outdoors, but just be
- 5:54Speaker 1: considerate pet owners, of course, and I think most pet
- 5:56Speaker 1: owners do a very good job. It's always a handful
- 5:59Speaker 1: that spoiled a bunch of apples because I, I, I've
- 6:02Speaker 1: seen interesting pet behavior inside stores before. Stores that allow
- 6:06Speaker 1: pets to be in them.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you
- 6:10Speaker 1: Maybe just nudge a friend saying, hey, you have a dog, right?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Please make sure you clean up after they finish their business.
- 6:16Speaker 1: There you go. Joakim Gomez here with you and it's
- 6:19Speaker 1: time to play. Singtel, grab back Magic.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Let's make you a winner on this Thursday morning. Again,
- 6:26Speaker 1: if you've just joined us, how this game works is
- 6:28Speaker 1: very simple. Singtel, we've got some limited edition grab bags
- 6:32Speaker 1: for you, which you can get, by the way, if
- 6:34Speaker 1: you're porting over or maybe say doing a re-contract with
- 6:38Speaker 1: SingTel and get that 5G plus, man. The data speeds
- 6:41Speaker 1: are fast, unlimited roaming over in Malaysia. Ask your nearest
- 6:45Speaker 1: SingTel staff for more details. So for $59 you get
- 6:48Speaker 1: these limited edition grab bags, but
- 6:50Speaker 1: Inside these grab bags, I assure you, the value of
- 6:54Speaker 1: the items are definitely more than $59. What would you
- 6:58Speaker 1: get though? It's almost like a blind box situation. So
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'll give you three hints with regard to the total
- 7:06Speaker 1: value of the bag, and I'll give you two options.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You pick the one that makes more sense and hopefully
- 7:10Speaker 1: you walk away a winner here. We're in the middle
- 7:12Speaker 1: of playing Singtel grab bag magic, and I also want
- 7:16Speaker 1: I say hello to Francesca who called us earlier, but unfortunately,
- 7:21Speaker 1: she got the answer wrong. I tried, I tried my best,
- 7:25Speaker 1: didn't want to give it away, but it took us
- 7:27Speaker 1: 4 rounds to get our first caller who did not
- 7:30Speaker 1: walk away with the limited edition Singtel grab bag. But
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know what? Francesca's pain is your gain. That means
- 7:37Speaker 1: you can play it again. The phone lines are still open. 987, hello,
- 7:41Speaker 1: what's your name?
- 7:42Speaker 2: Hello, Shareen here. Hello,
- 7:44Speaker 1: Shareen. How's your Thursday so far?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Uh, so far, so good.
- 7:50Speaker 1: That, that loud sigh before you said it gave it away.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Are you going to work right now?
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yes,
- 7:56Speaker 2: after dropping
- 7:57Speaker 2: my kids. Oh,
- 7:58Speaker 1: that's fantastic. Which industry are you in then, Shareen?
- 8:02Speaker 2: Uh, which industry.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I think government industry.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Government, OK, I won't ask anymore in case it's top secret.
- 8:11Speaker 1: So Shareen, are you ready to play Singtel grab back magic?
- 8:16Speaker 2: Yes, OK,
- 8:17Speaker 1: I'll give you 3 clues pertaining to the total value
- 8:21Speaker 1: of the bag and then 2 options. You pick the
- 8:23Speaker 1: one that makes more sense, OK? Here we go. All right. Shareen,
- 8:27Speaker 1: your very first clue, this Singtel grab bag, it's roughly
- 8:32Speaker 1: worth a short staycation, a 1 night hotel deal.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Your second clue, the total value of this Singtel grab bag,
- 8:40Speaker 1: it's about 6 months of just daily copy. Just copy, OK?
- 8:47Speaker 1: And the third clue.
- 8:49Speaker 1: The total value could be roughly a full trolley of
- 8:52Speaker 1: groceries at NTUC. Shareen, based on these clues, do you
- 8:58Speaker 1: think the value is A, $600 or B, $248.90?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Um,
- 9:12Speaker 2: OK, 292.
- 9:15Speaker 1: So $248.90. How did you come to this conclusion then, Shareen?
- 9:22Speaker 2: Uh, because the grocery amount,
- 9:25Speaker 1: the grocery amount. You know what, Shareen, well done, absolutely correct.
- 9:30Speaker 2: You
- 9:30Speaker 1: are.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Walking
- 9:34Speaker 2: away with our
- 9:34Speaker 1: 4th Singtel grab bag. Now, Shari, I'm gonna capo for
- 9:38Speaker 1: you and reach into the grab bag and see what
- 9:39Speaker 1: you want for yourself, OK? Let's go. Oh, inside this,
- 9:43Speaker 1: it's a Ninja Blast portable blender which I use, and
- 9:47Speaker 1: you have a 15 watt Samsung wireless charger duo worth $149.
- 9:53Speaker 1: The portable blender worth $99. Congratulations, Shari.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Thank you. You know how in Singapore, we are dealing
- 10:02Speaker 1: with the crows, maybe the monkeys, sometimes we see a
- 10:06Speaker 1: wild boar and all that, and there's loads of online
- 10:10Speaker 1: comments about how we should rightly deal with it. Maybe
- 10:14Speaker 1: we can look to our friends over in Japan.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna use this fact, OK, quite cute, it's like
- 10:20Speaker 1: the anime flash. Because apparently, there is an inventor, an
- 10:24Speaker 1: inventor in Japan who is making animatronic scarecrows in the
- 10:30Speaker 1: form of a monster wolf.
- 10:35Speaker 1: And these wolves have flashing red eyes that will howl
- 10:39Speaker 1: and growl menacingly. It's with artificial fur, there are speakers.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It comes with a battery and solar panel, and it
- 10:47Speaker 1: costs $4000.
- 10:51Speaker 1: If I'm paying for that, it better chase away my
- 10:53Speaker 1: problems as well. But unfortunately for our friends over in Japan,
- 10:57Speaker 1: they're having a bear problem, and some of these bear
- 11:00Speaker 1: attacks could result in fatalities, so they're doing what we
- 11:03Speaker 1: can and this inventor himself has come up to the
- 11:05Speaker 1: news and said that yes, uh, all of a sudden
- 11:08Speaker 1: this month, I'm seeing loads of orders come in. There
- 11:11Speaker 1: are about 50 orders, and these animatronic scarecrows in the
- 11:15Speaker 1: form of a monster wolf.
- 11:18Speaker 1: It's actually all done by hand, and the people ordering
- 11:22Speaker 1: it are farmers, people who work on golf courses and
- 11:25Speaker 1: maybe even in construction as well. To this Japanese inventor,
- 11:29Speaker 1: I say don't be surprised very soon. Maybe our Singapore
- 11:33Speaker 1: government might contact you to put some of these monster
- 11:35Speaker 1: wolves at our hawker centers. Let's see if it really works,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and there's a picture of it available online. I mean,
- 11:43Speaker 1: To us humans, yeah, we, we can tell it's an
- 11:45Speaker 1: animatronic scarecrow, but quite cute lah. And it's always at
- 11:51Speaker 1: a time like this. I wish I had Sonnya here
- 11:53Speaker 1: with me to balance my views out sometimes or give
- 11:57Speaker 1: me a different view, but well, she's on wedding prep,
- 12:00Speaker 1: she's on her honeymoon. She's back with us June 2nd.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So just to give you a short circuit update, I'll
- 12:07Speaker 1: I'm supposed to go on leave June 1st on Vesak
- 12:08Speaker 1: Day itself for two weeks, but I told my boss,
- 12:10Speaker 1: you know what? Since Sonia is back after a very
- 12:13Speaker 1: long time, June 2nd, I'll do the show with her,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and then June 3rd, I'm flying off to Bhutan for
- 12:18Speaker 1: 10 days, and I hope I enjoy my trip. I
- 12:21Speaker 1: hear that place is amazing. I cannot wait to go
- 12:23Speaker 1: see it for myself. So, for today's one.
- 12:26Speaker 1: It's combining two things, World Cup 2026 and doing things
- 12:32Speaker 1: for free. The latter of which I really hate. Trust
- 12:36Speaker 1: me on this one, I'll spill my own beans in
- 12:38Speaker 1: a while.
- 12:39Speaker 1: But let me take you to the US, Canada, and Mexico,
- 12:42Speaker 1: where unfortunately on social media, there is a bit of
- 12:46Speaker 1: a backlash happening now. Now, I don't know whether the
- 12:50Speaker 1: projected revenue of this year's World Cup accurate or whether
- 12:53Speaker 1: is it official, but apparently, the projected revenue is $11 billion.
- 13:00Speaker 1: dollars. You heard that right? $11 billion. That's the projected
- 13:06Speaker 1: amount they'll make from this whole event and with ticket prices, with,
- 13:12Speaker 1: you know, hotel prices going up and people flying over
- 13:14Speaker 1: to the US, Canada, or Mexico for the World Cup, yeah, you,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you might think they won't be having any issue hitting it.
- 13:22Speaker 1: People on social media are complaining because our friends at
- 13:26Speaker 1: FIFA are asking for volunteers.
- 13:30Speaker 1: OK, and can I please quote to you the call
- 13:34Speaker 1: for volunteers and what it says. Volunteer for this, for
- 13:38Speaker 1: lasting friendships and a once in a lifetime experience, and
- 13:43Speaker 1: according to the comment section and even on Twitter as well,
- 13:46Speaker 1: people are saying these volunteers.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Shifts can last from 10 to 14 hours. And then
- 13:53Speaker 1: some comments are saying, hey, why are you complaining about
- 13:55Speaker 1: doing this for free? Because you get to watch the games.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Let me just clarify this and witnessing events here in
- 14:02Speaker 1: Singapore as well like Formula One or any major sporting event.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Not all the volunteers are at the stadium or at
- 14:09Speaker 1: the Formula One pit building or whatsoever, no. They are
- 14:12Speaker 1: outside controlling traffic, directing people and all that. So, the volunteers,
- 14:18Speaker 1: they are more or less gonna do this for free,
- 14:21Speaker 1: for an event that's projected to earn 11.
- 14:24Speaker 1: billion dollars. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not
- 14:28Speaker 1: an attack on volunteering or whatsoever. If people volunteer for
- 14:31Speaker 1: meaningful things like helping, helping the needy or the elderly
- 14:35Speaker 1: here in Singapore, anywhere around the world, construction cleanups or
- 14:39Speaker 1: disaster cleanups, yes, go ahead, do some good in the society.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But for this one, I, I, I feel very uncomfortable about. So,
- 14:48Speaker 1: here's today's question. 669-11987, as well as on WhatsApp, 90050987.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Have you done something for free? And it had a
- 15:01Speaker 1: huge payoff. Yes, I know I'm sounding very transactional here,
- 15:05Speaker 1: but I don't know. I feel as if, OK, look,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm the worst business person alive, but I feel as
- 15:11Speaker 1: if as I grow older and and mature more in
- 15:13Speaker 1: this industry and in life as well.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I, I find myself protecting my value better. I, I
- 15:21Speaker 1: think I'm doing a better job at it, but I
- 15:23Speaker 1: want to know, 669-11987 or 9005097, have you done something
- 15:29Speaker 1: for free and there was a huge payoff or was
- 15:31Speaker 1: there not a huge payoff? Let me know your stories because,
- 15:34Speaker 1: for example, if tomorrow you tell me, for example, if
- 15:37Speaker 1: Apple
- 15:38Speaker 1: Here and I'm gonna host for Mr. Tim Cook for free.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I might do it because the payoff is I get
- 15:44Speaker 1: to meet Tim Cook for a while, get a handshake,
- 15:47Speaker 1: get my Instagram moment, and I'll be very happy. So
- 15:49Speaker 1: I think, really, I'm sounding very transactional here, but let
- 15:51Speaker 1: me know your stories. Come on, get your opinions in
- 15:54Speaker 1: about this particular situation.
- 15:56Speaker 1: It involves volunteering and the World Cup. So again, let
- 16:00Speaker 1: me just put a disclaimer out there. This is not
- 16:02Speaker 1: attacking volunteering per se. If it's for something meaningful, go
- 16:07Speaker 1: for it. I, I volunteer as well and I do
- 16:09Speaker 1: this privately. I, I don't like to publicize whatever open
- 16:14Speaker 1: inverted commas, good that I do, just a personal joy
- 16:17Speaker 1: for me, and I don't need to share it and
- 16:19Speaker 1: get any like, oh, you're a good person. I don't
- 16:22Speaker 1: need that kind of comments, no.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But for the FIFA World Cup that's happening in less
- 16:27Speaker 1: than a month's time, again, I don't know how official
- 16:31Speaker 1: the projected revenue number is, but it's at $11 billion.
- 16:36Speaker 1: It's a lot of money and ticket prices for this
- 16:39Speaker 1: year's World Cup is very high. That's why we're just
- 16:41Speaker 1: gonna watch it on MWatch. Um, the volunteers though, unfortunately,
- 16:48Speaker 1: even though it's an $11 billion event,
- 16:50Speaker 1: Uh, no one's gonna get paid. The volunteer advertisement was
- 16:54Speaker 1: come for lasting friendships and once in a lifetime experience,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and the shifts, according to the comment section, they can
- 17:02Speaker 1: last for 10 to 14 hours. So, based on that,
- 17:05Speaker 1: my question to you is, have you done something for free?
- 17:08Speaker 1: And there was a great takeaway or not a good takeaway?
- 17:11Speaker 1: What's the, what was
- 17:12Speaker 1: The payoff for you. Yes, I know it sounds transactional,
- 17:15Speaker 1: but hopefully that the main gist of today is to
- 17:19Speaker 1: protect your value and maybe be a little bit more
- 17:22Speaker 1: discerning on whether is it worth your time or not.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Wanna say good morning to Janelle who texted us on WhatsApp.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Hey Joakim, I once helped out at a music festival
- 17:31Speaker 1: for free when I was in Poly.
- 17:33Speaker 1: It was super tiring because we worked like 14-hour days,
- 17:38Speaker 1: but I ended up making friends I still hang out
- 17:40Speaker 1: with today. Hey, there you go. Another one coming in
- 17:45Speaker 1: from Alex. Alex says, my friend asked me to DJ
- 17:48Speaker 1: at his cafe opening for free.
- 17:53Speaker 1: At first, I was annoyed because there was no payment,
- 17:56Speaker 1: but someone in the crowd later hired me for a
- 18:00Speaker 1: paid gig. Wow, OK.
- 18:03Speaker 1: That that's the Lady Gaga saying, you know, 99 people
- 18:06Speaker 1: might not believe in you, but that one person who
- 18:09Speaker 1: sees potential, he or she could change your life. Keep
- 18:12Speaker 1: your texts coming in over at 900-50987 or WhatsApp us
- 18:16Speaker 1: at 6 or rather call us 669-11987. Have you done
- 18:20Speaker 1: something for free and there was a good takeaway or
- 18:23Speaker 1: it wasn't worth your time?
- 18:25Speaker 1: Let us know. If you just joined us on this
- 18:27Speaker 1: Thursday morning, I'd say welcome to the show. Where have
- 18:29Speaker 1: you been? It'll be me till the 2nd of June
- 18:32Speaker 1: because Sonia's away on wedding leave and then her honeymoon,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and yup, this weekend, a very big weekend for myself
- 18:39Speaker 1: as a very good friend of Sonia and having known
- 18:42Speaker 1: her for 16 years, I now call myself her unofficial
- 18:45Speaker 1: older brother. Anyway, today's topic though.
- 18:50Speaker 1: The World Cup, 2026, projected revenue rumored to be $11 billion.
- 18:56Speaker 1: This is why their call for volunteers kinda got attacked
- 19:00Speaker 1: on social media.
- 19:02Speaker 1: The call reads, come for lasting friendships and once in
- 19:05Speaker 1: a lifetime experience. Yes, but are we getting paid? I, I,
- 19:09Speaker 1: I know. At this point, I sound very transactional and
- 19:13Speaker 1: if Sonia were here she would call me out as well.
- 19:16Speaker 1: But if you tell me if I volunteer for this
- 19:18Speaker 1: and I'm guaranteed to be inside the stadium and I'm
- 19:22Speaker 1: gonna stand next to Lionel, Messi and Ronaldo, I'll take it. I, I,
- 19:26Speaker 1: I kid you not, I'll take it.
- 19:28Speaker 1: But if I'm the volunteer outside the stadium directing traffic
- 19:32Speaker 1: for 10 or 14 hours, dealing with angry people, dealing
- 19:36Speaker 1: with entitled people, and your event is taking in $11
- 19:40Speaker 1: billion worth of revenue, but I'm just getting a thank
- 19:43Speaker 1: you and a t-shirt.
- 19:45Speaker 1: No lah. I, I, I, I cannot sit right with that.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I don't know why. I wanna go to WhatsApp right
- 19:50Speaker 1: now and say good morning to Andy. Andy says, hey, Joakim, I,
- 19:53Speaker 1: I feel it could be a bit of exploitation if
- 19:55Speaker 1: they organize the World Cup and allow the world to
- 19:58Speaker 1: watch it in the spirit of promoting peace and.
- 20:00Speaker 1: And friendship, then I would encourage volunteering in the world.
- 20:03Speaker 1: But $11 billion they want people to volunteer free of charge? I, I,
- 20:08Speaker 1: I cannot grasp that logic. Hey, Andy, you know what?
- 20:11Speaker 1: You and I both. I also wanna say good morning
- 20:13Speaker 1: to Jason. Hello, Jason.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Morning, Joakim. I love the practicality of this question. I
- 20:19Speaker 1: used to volunteer at this trading workshop for free because
- 20:22Speaker 1: I really wanted to get into the finance industry, but
- 20:25Speaker 1: my academics has never been the best, and I'm in
- 20:28Speaker 1: the art stream. My main role at this workshop was
- 20:31Speaker 1: to help the attendees set up their accounts and guide
- 20:33Speaker 1: them through the functions. While I burnt many, many weekends,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I met many different people.
- 20:38Speaker 1: People, some nice, some not so nice. The best part,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I actually met a high net worth individual who really
- 20:45Speaker 1: admired my enthusiasm in teaching and training that he now
- 20:48Speaker 1: entrusts me with his six-figure portfolio to manage. This is
- 20:52Speaker 1: the biggest first step for me and I'm definitely giving
- 20:54Speaker 1: my 101% to make sure I deliver results to him. Hey,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you know what, Jason? You know what? This, this deserves
- 21:00Speaker 1: a big clap for you. Well done, buddy.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And, and all the best. See, at least for Jason's case,
- 21:07Speaker 1: that there was a good takeaway. 669-11987. Jane, what's your story? OK,
- 21:12Speaker 2: so me and my friend, we decided to attend a
- 21:15Speaker 2: sports massage course, um, that we paid more than 1000 for.
- 21:20Speaker 2: So for her, she managed to use her Skills Future,
- 21:23Speaker 2: so she paid only a few 100.
- 21:24Speaker 2: So at the end of the course, uh, we had
- 21:26Speaker 2: to do to get the certification is a compulsory 12
- 21:30Speaker 2: to 14 hours, um, volunteer massaging. So we had no
- 21:35Speaker 2: choice lah because we already attended for so long, so
- 21:38Speaker 2: we wanted the certification. Um, so we were also made
- 21:42Speaker 2: to tie up with like, for example, if there was
- 21:44Speaker 2: a stand chart event or some running event, we had
- 21:47Speaker 2: to be those, uh, sports masseuse la.
- 21:51Speaker 2: At the table. So at first we thought it was OK,
- 21:54Speaker 2: but in the actual event came, the, the runners were
- 21:58Speaker 2: so sticky and sweaty. It was a terrible experience for us.
- 22:03Speaker 2: So we had no choice, uh, but we had to
- 22:06Speaker 2: use those gloves, and we just, but then to the runners,
- 22:09Speaker 2: they're like, can you take off the gloves, because not sure,
- 22:11Speaker 2: you know, you really
- 22:12Speaker 1: press it and go in there for their ligaments, yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Then there's friction. So, so in the end, some of
- 22:18Speaker 2: us actually took off our gloves, uh, for the sake
- 22:20Speaker 2: of the runners, but it was over a very
- 22:22Speaker 2: Uh, um, I would say a new experience because, you know,
- 22:26Speaker 2: if you really have clients, you will be massage massaging
- 22:29Speaker 2: them on the bed and they won't be so sweaty.
- 22:32Speaker 2: But this one was really a totally different, different thing. So, uh,
- 22:35Speaker 2: it was quite an experience lah. But, but I thought
- 22:37Speaker 2: it was quite smart because they, they give us our
- 22:39Speaker 2: certification and the event gets to get free sports
- 22:42Speaker 2: masseuse.
- 22:43Speaker 1: So are you now a full-time sports masseuse then?
- 22:46Speaker 2: No,
- 22:46Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I, we just want them to use our skills, that's all.
- 22:53Speaker 1: You know, um, yeah, again, on behalf of all runners
- 22:57Speaker 1: and even leisure runners for events, right, thank you for
- 23:00Speaker 1: doing what you do. You have no idea how much
- 23:01Speaker 1: comfort it gives us after a 21 km or a
- 23:04Speaker 1: 42 km, but I tell, I tell this to my
- 23:07Speaker 1: sports masseuse whenever I go to him. His name is Boon.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I say, Boon, why am I paying you to scream
- 23:11Speaker 1: and suffer in your bed? But never mind, there you go.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your call. You take care, OK? OK,
- 23:17Speaker 1: no problem. Bye bye. Bye, Jane. On the topic of
- 23:20Speaker 1: this year's
- 23:20Speaker 1: World Cup 2026 and them asking for volunteers. And in
- 23:26Speaker 1: the call for volunteers, nothing about payment, it just says
- 23:29Speaker 1: lasting friendships and once in a lifetime experience. Yes, there'll
- 23:33Speaker 1: be food and drink and exclusive t-shirts.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I, I'm just chuckling because for an event that's projected
- 23:41Speaker 1: to take in $11 billion worth of revenue.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I just wonder, like, they can't afford a small token
- 23:49Speaker 1: for the volunteers, but again, not all volunteers are guaranteed
- 23:52Speaker 1: to watch the games inside their respective stadiums, whether in Canada,
- 23:56Speaker 1: USA or Mexico. They could be directing traffic, giving directions,
- 24:00Speaker 1: dealing with angry people, dealing with drunk people, even. I
- 24:03Speaker 1: wanna go to WhatsApp and ask for your opinion. So,
- 24:06Speaker 1: was there a good takeaway doing something for free, or
- 24:08Speaker 1: was there no takeaways for you at all? Wanna say
- 24:10Speaker 1: hello to.
- 24:11Speaker 1: OK, CK says, hey, Solo Joe. Oh, that's my new
- 24:14Speaker 1: name for the next two weeks. I've been volunteering in
- 24:17Speaker 1: our Formula One night race for more than 10 years,
- 24:20Speaker 1: and it still feels great and fulfilling for me. Though
- 24:23Speaker 1: it's really tiring standing all day under the hot sun,
- 24:26Speaker 1: and we all complain about not returning for free labor
- 24:29Speaker 1: the next year, but here we are, back year after
- 24:32Speaker 1: year for our Formula One reservist, so that means I'm
- 24:35Speaker 1: very sure.
- 24:35Speaker 1: CK, we will see you, we will see you very soon.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Wanna say hello to Cameron. Cameron says, hey, Joakim, I've
- 24:42Speaker 1: been a volunteer in my estate for coming 3 years.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Greatest takeaway is meeting people, dealing with situations, communicating with
- 24:51Speaker 1: different authorities, organizing events, etc. These are things that money
- 24:56Speaker 1: cannot buy. You know what, Cameron, I'm gonna clap for you.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Thank you very much for that one.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Again, don't, don't get me wrong, this is never an
- 25:05Speaker 1: attack on volunteering. I, I volunteer too on my own
- 25:08Speaker 1: private basis, but this one is more of volunteering for
- 25:11Speaker 1: an event that has $11.11 billion dollars rather, $11 billion
- 25:15Speaker 1: worth of revenue. small token, just a little bit so
- 25:19Speaker 1: it won't hurt the volunteers, right? Wanna say good morning
- 25:21Speaker 1: to E. Morning Joe. Not me, but my husband.
- 25:26Speaker 1: My husband led Singapore's football cheer squad, the Singer Brigade. Hey, OK.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Since 2012, he told me he will support from the
- 25:37Speaker 1: sidelines after COVID. In the end, he got voted into
- 25:40Speaker 1: the Football council last year to work on Singapore's fans' engagement.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Definitely more work, but he loves it. Hey, you know what, E,
- 25:48Speaker 1: clapping for your husband as well. That's a great takeaway.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Like somebody who's been there supporting our boys in red
- 25:56Speaker 1: and our women as well, our lionesses, and now in
- 25:59Speaker 1: the committee to help better fan engagement, I cannot wait
- 26:02Speaker 1: to see what's gonna happen when we take on, I
- 26:05Speaker 1: believe we have a few games coming up for our
- 26:07Speaker 1: Singapore A team. If it's against Mongolia and China, if
- 26:11Speaker 1: I remember correctly. When we come back, let's pick a
- 26:14Speaker 1: winner for today's topic. Thank you very much for all
- 26:16Speaker 1: your calls and texts, by the way. Thank you for
- 26:18Speaker 1: all your calls and texts earlier. If you just joined us,
- 26:21Speaker 1: just giving you a very quick recap.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I spoke about how the World Cup that's happening in
- 26:26Speaker 1: less than a month's time, the projected revenue $11 billion
- 26:30Speaker 1: but yet the volunteers that volunteer for them, they don't
- 26:33Speaker 1: get any token. No small ang pao packet as well,
- 26:37Speaker 1: just food and drink.
- 26:38Speaker 1: And the last, what's the exact phrase? Hang on. Lasting
- 26:42Speaker 1: friendships and a once in a lifetime experience. Yeah, I mean,
- 26:47Speaker 1: if you volunteer and you're really lucky to be in
- 26:50Speaker 1: the stadium, you're standing there and you see Lionel Messi
- 26:54Speaker 1: or Ronaldo walk out next to you. That, that's a
- 26:56Speaker 1: money can't buy experience. Yeah, well done.
- 26:59Speaker 1: But for the other 99% of volunteers, they're outside dealing
- 27:03Speaker 1: with angry people, giving directions, drunk people, rowdy fans, they
- 27:08Speaker 1: could be lost in translation as well, you know what
- 27:10Speaker 1: I mean? So many things happening, but that's another can
- 27:13Speaker 1: of worms that I don't think it's on me to open.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I think it's the powers that be that should open
- 27:18Speaker 1: it for FIFA as well. But for today's winner, I
- 27:22Speaker 1: wanna give it to Jane, who called us earlier. Jane, congratulations.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Sharing with us about her sports masseuse journey. Even though
- 27:32Speaker 1: you're not a full-time sports masseuse, all is good, Jane.
- 27:35Speaker 1: What's coming your way, a very nice dining experience. All
- 27:38Speaker 1: thanks to our friends over at Lime Restaurant worth $100.
- 27:43Speaker 1: You can try the versatility of premium Japanese A5 and
- 27:47Speaker 1: Australian Wagyu from charcoal grilled Wagyu skewers and Korean style.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Wagyu tata to Wagyu burgers and Thai massaman Wagyu beef
- 27:56Speaker 1: cheek curry. And look, today is the last day you
- 28:01Speaker 1: can get a 15% saving on the buffet experience. So
- 28:04Speaker 1: please log on to Park Royal Collection Pickering and Lime
- 28:08Speaker 1: Singapore on Instagram for more details. Uh, what has now
- 28:11Speaker 1: been in the spotlight? Run clubs.
- 28:15Speaker 1: If you're a part of a run club, this one
- 28:18Speaker 1: is out for you because on a citizen journalism website,
- 28:22Speaker 1: apparently a run club is now in the spotlight for
- 28:24Speaker 1: all the wrong reasons. The entire crew was occupying all
- 28:28Speaker 1: 7 to 8 lanes, I believe maybe for an Instagram
- 28:31Speaker 1: picture to which the person that sent the article over
- 28:35Speaker 1: to this website said, this one club inconvenienced all of
- 28:39Speaker 1: the other runners, and some were very rude, some laughed
- 28:42Speaker 1: at me and I confronted them. Yes.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Um, I, I train regularly over at Bishan Stadium as well,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and there are run clubs there, and thankfully for the
- 28:51Speaker 1: ones over there, they're quite, um, respectful of the lanes.
- 28:54Speaker 1: So I know there are prominent tracks that are being
- 28:56Speaker 1: used by a lot of run clubs. Evans Road, for example,
- 28:59Speaker 1: the one at MOE, Bishan, Serangoon Stadium. So, and even
- 29:04Speaker 1: the Marina Bay area as well. Uh, run clubs are
- 29:08Speaker 1: more or less respectful, they'll keep to the left. So
- 29:10Speaker 1: the track etiquette people.
- 29:12Speaker 1: If you're doing your intervals and you're running fast, yeah,
- 29:15Speaker 1: go to like lane 12, and 3, or maybe even 4.
- 29:18Speaker 1: If you're going slow for like an easy jog, then
- 29:22Speaker 1: use lane 678. I think that has always been the
- 29:24Speaker 1: unspoken track etiquette. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I
- 29:27Speaker 1: know some clubs or even track and field, CCAs from
- 29:31Speaker 1: schools or a coach will train the athletes at these
- 29:35Speaker 1: areas and they'll use the lanes that are not mainly occupied.
- 29:38Speaker 1: So again,
- 29:39Speaker 1: If you're part of a run club, look, you're not
- 29:41Speaker 1: just showing up to make friends and all that. You
- 29:43Speaker 1: also represent a run club now. Make sure you don't
- 29:45Speaker 1: get spotlighted for the wrong reasons, because this particular run
- 29:49Speaker 1: club now has to go and defend themselves on social media.
- 29:51Speaker 1: In the news as of late, vaping, and this is
- 29:54Speaker 1: quite worrying. What's worrying is in the Health Sciences Authority
- 29:59Speaker 1: and Singapore Police Force operation, where they are fining people
- 30:04Speaker 1: on the spot and catching them for vaping.
- 30:06Speaker 1: I, I don't know whether this is the youngest person
- 30:10Speaker 1: fined and caught for vaping so far, an 11 year
- 30:13Speaker 1: old over in Punggol on April 30th. Now, this is worrying.
- 30:17Speaker 1: I say this on live national radio. I I know
- 30:21Speaker 1: people are still vaping here in Singapore.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Despite multiple warnings and even radio messages as well that
- 30:28Speaker 1: they're gonna clamp down and go very hard on people
- 30:30Speaker 1: who vape to really stop the spread of it and
- 30:32Speaker 1: also vapes laced with etomidate, but if you vape here
- 30:37Speaker 1: in Singapore and you are absolutely OK with an 11
- 30:40Speaker 1: year old doing it, there's a huge problem.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So, I think it's a rabbit hole, right? Where did
- 30:44Speaker 1: this 11 year old get the vape from? Where did
- 30:46Speaker 1: the person who sold it to him get the vape
- 30:48Speaker 1: from as well? So I think the plot hole thickens,
- 30:50Speaker 1: the rabbit hole deepens, and, and let's hope that we
- 30:53Speaker 1: are able to put a stop to vaping, especially with
- 30:56Speaker 1: vapes laced with etomidates here in Singapore because it's caused
- 31:00Speaker 1: enough accidents every time on TikTok or social media. When
- 31:03Speaker 1: I scroll, I'll see a video of a guy looking.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Really lost, coming out of a car that just crashed.
- 31:08Speaker 1: So please be extra careful. And yeah, if you're on
- 31:11Speaker 1: the roads, don't use your phone while crossing. Please make
- 31:14Speaker 1: sure you look forward or look left and look right
- 31:17Speaker 1: to make sure you are safe as well. In the meantime,
- 31:20Speaker 1: they will be here in Singapore, November twenty-eighth. It's a
- 31:23Speaker 1: clash with Baby Monster who are performing at the indoor stadium.
- 31:28Speaker 1: So that leaves us with, I don't know.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Maybe arena and expo for the Seraphim or even StarVist.
- 31:34Speaker 1: And OK, given how it's Thursday, May 14th, can I
- 31:38Speaker 1: plan your long weekend that could be happening in two weeks' time?
- 31:42Speaker 1: So to all officers and whoever approves the leave requests,
- 31:47Speaker 1: take note, Wednesday, 27th of May, is Hari Raya Haji.
- 31:53Speaker 1: That's our next public holiday for those who don't celebrate
- 31:55Speaker 1: or observe it.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And then, 31st of May is a Sunday. That means
- 32:00Speaker 1: the 1st of June, the following Monday, is the Vesak
- 32:03Speaker 1: Day public holiday. So with two holidays back to back,
- 32:07Speaker 1: I'm very sure that Thursday and Friday of the week
- 32:10Speaker 1: going into Vesak Day, people will be taking leave. So
- 32:13Speaker 1: if you play your cards right, happy extra long weekend
- 32:16Speaker 1: to you, yes.
- 32:18Speaker 1: done.
- 32:22Speaker 1: So if you are making travel plans, keep safe and
- 32:25Speaker 1: especially I'm giving you a two week in advance warning.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Those of you who want to go out to JB
- 32:29Speaker 1: for a quick break, yes, do expect massive jams on
- 32:33Speaker 1: both the Causeway and the Tuas second link. There you go.
