- Adam Rutz: Some people spend their entire lives preparing for an opportunity. And then when that opportunity finally presents itself, they're afraid to take it. One of the things I've always admired about Tiger Woods was his mindset towards competition. Back at the 2000 US Open, Tiger was talking about how if he were playing basketball, he'd want to be the guy taking the game winning shot. Whether he made or missed it, he wanted that opportunity. And that's what I love about the mindset of an elite competitor. They're not looking for guarantees. They're looking for opportunities to compete. Because here's the reality. If you're going to pursue anything meaningful in life, there's always going to be the possibility of failing. You're going to experience pressure. You're going to have doubts. And you're going to find yourself in situations where you don't know exactly how things are going to turn out. But you can't allow that uncertainty to dictate your decisions. Think about that basketball player with the game on the line. They spend all those hours in the gym, all those shots they've taken when nobody was watching, all that preparation. This is the moment they've been preparing for. And your life is no different. Maybe it's an opportunity to advan advance in your career. Maybe it's starting something you've always dreamed about. Or maybe it's having that difficult conversation with somebody you love or one of your employees. Whatever it is, you have a decision to make. You can focus on everything that might go wrong, or you can switch that focus back to everything that you've done to prepare yourself for that opportunity. And here's something I want you to remember: you don't have to know you're going to succeed to believe that you're capable of succeeding. Big difference there. So next time you feel that pressure, instead of asking yourself, what if I fail? Ask yourself, What does this moment require from me? Take a breath. Trust your preparation and commit to the next action. Because you're not going to make every game-winning shot. You're not going to succeed at everything you attempt. But I'd much rather look back knowing I gave myself an opportunity than wonder what could have happened if I had just been willing to take that chance. Don't spend your life watching other people take the shots you were capable of taking yourself. Want the responsibility. Embrace the opportunity. Want the moment. Mindset, process, discipline, execution. That's mental performance daily.
