Transcript
- 0:25Hello everyone, welcome back to easy double podcast episode #8
- 0:30we're two episodes away from reaching double figures which is
- 0:34will be the first milestone. It's has come around pretty
- 0:37quickly, you think, Dean? Yeah, I think so.
- 0:39It sort of feels like we're still just starting out, don't
- 0:42you think? Yeah, it's like just every time
- 0:45you sat here, it's like, shit, that's another week just gone,
- 0:48another week gone. But I guess it's helpful when
- 0:51we're counting down the weeks towards a marathon.
- 0:54Yeah, nice. For now, two weeks out.
- 0:56Yep, nice for a lot of it to be in the rearview Mirror Now.
- 0:59So how are you feeling heading into, I don't know if we're
- 1:03going to fully, fully taper from now, but heading into the phase
- 1:07where most of the work is done anyway?
- 1:08Yeah, exactly. Happy that it's that it's done
- 1:11and looking forward to sort of backing off a little bit and
- 1:14starting to feel fresh soon. Yeah, and as the listeners may
- 1:19have noticed, we are without our our partner in crime.
- 1:22Yes, again, because he's he's actually on a flight right now
- 1:26as we're recording. And then he's told me he texts
- 1:29me to borrow my tents because as soon as he gets back to WA, he's
- 1:33going camping down South. So the man just hasn't got time
- 1:36for us anymore. He he's a jetsetter.
- 1:40Too busy? But we have it on good
- 1:42authority. He'll be popping in again for a
- 1:45brief segment. We've left them, we've left them
- 1:47some homework. So hopefully that will be
- 1:49entertaining and we'll we'll sloss it in and we can hear how
- 1:52he's been getting on and then his annual leave will have
- 1:55expired by next week and he'll be back.
- 1:57That's it. No option.
- 1:59Yeah, so we've got the main things to cover off this week is
- 2:02Nationals of Perth, which Dean and I managed to get down to
- 2:06yesterday afternoon. Boston Marathon is coming up a
- 2:09week today, which is very exciting.
- 2:11Dean is back on the YouTube Diaries with a double.
- 2:14We're going to go through the training week in a similar way
- 2:17that we've done last week. Dean and I'll just bounce off
- 2:19each other. And then we have an interesting
- 2:22race slash workout review from yesterday, Sunday down in
- 2:26Bunbury there at the half marathon at the Three Waters
- 2:29Running Festival. I did ask Owen to do a double
- 2:32trouble and I haven't actually listened to his recording, so I
- 2:36don't know whether he's left as one or not.
- 2:39But we'll see how we get on. And then we've got a fair few
- 2:41listener questions came in thankfully.
- 2:43So thanks to everyone who's sent them in and we'll try and get
- 2:46through as many as we can. Excuse me.
- 2:48So first item on the agenda being the Australian Athletics
- 2:52National Championships this weekend in Perth.
- 2:54Do you want to take us through any thoughts you've got there,
- 2:57Dean? Maybe just like an overall
- 3:00thought. So when I heard that like, and
- 3:04it maybe it could be a double trouble segment in terms of lack
- 3:06of financial support for runners or athletes in, in Australia in
- 3:10terms of participating in, in athletics, it's sort of like
- 3:13it's sort of fairly well known that athletes aren't typically
- 3:16well looked after. And then when I heard that the
- 3:19IT cost, what was it $26 a ticket plus a $6 booking fee per
- 3:25session or per day if you wanted to go down to the athletics.
- 3:28I'm like, gosh, that's that's a bit steep for for a sport that's
- 3:31generally, you know, on our Friday night sort of strife
- 3:35mates. They're sort of not that well
- 3:36attended. Not that you need to pay for
- 3:37admission then, but I I didn't anticipate that there would be
- 3:40much of an atmosphere and I didn't and I thought that
- 3:42pricing a ticket like that seemed to be unreasonable.
- 3:45But I was pleasantly surprised after chatting to you on the
- 3:48Saturday and going down on the Sunday, what sort of a made it
- 3:51was and the just how good a an atmosphere it was there and how
- 3:56cool it was to sort of see it live like, and I think it sort
- 3:59of came across fairly well on the Channel 7 stream.
- 4:03But I just thought, I mean, it was a mix of both.
- 4:06I thought WA did a great job of hosting the event, but also all
- 4:09of the athletes turned up. And I think, I think the, you
- 4:14know, not to go too deep into it, but what World Athletics
- 4:17have done recently in terms of and what Australian selection
- 4:20policy does in terms of auto selecting an athlete that wins a
- 4:23national championship and then the bonus points that get
- 4:26awarded when an athlete runs a time in their national or area
- 4:31championships. Like there's so much incentive
- 4:33now for all of the best athletes to compete in a national
- 4:36championship. And So what that means is
- 4:40because they're because the incentives are right.
- 4:42You just get these really good quality fields.
- 4:44And then if you put on a great event like I thought Perth did,
- 4:47it just made for such a a good spectacle.
- 4:49And it, it drew people, it drew people to the event.
- 4:52It drew runners to the event. Like we loved all the events,
- 4:55but in particular, like we were there for the 200 on Sunday
- 4:57afternoon and there were non running people.
- 5:00Like, I don't know if you noticed there's a guy walking in
- 5:02front of us, Ben Cousins, who's sort of like one of the sort of
- 5:07West Coast Eagles greats in terms of like football
- 5:10footballers. And sort of he's down there and
- 5:12he's, you know, he's a obviously he's a, he's a bit of a local
- 5:16icon, local legend. And he's down there.
- 5:18And it looked like, I'm assuming he came there just in time to
- 5:21see sort of gout gout run, which I think it was sort of drawing
- 5:24people that aren't traditional athletics fans into the sport.
- 5:28And I thought, yeah, they did such a good job and it just
- 5:32looked like such a fun mate, so I thought it was really good.
- 5:34Yeah, I actually got a text off a woman that I used to house sit
- 5:38for and she texted me saying we're in Sydney watching the
- 5:42athletics on Channel 7. Are you there or are you
- 5:46watching it? And like she was buzzing about
- 5:47it too and as a non athletics fan.
- 5:49So it just shows what it does. Like if you make it accessible
- 5:53and all the kids getting down as well, it's just so much fun
- 5:57because one of the best parts was how like accessible the
- 6:00athletes were. And that's kudos to the athletes
- 6:03themselves and like making themselves available and being
- 6:06present afterwards. Like you and your kids benefited
- 6:09from it, didn't they? Yeah, I mean, you and I cashed
- 6:11in in between the there was a, there was a section for the
- 6:17listeners, There was a section. So there was a couple of false
- 6:19starts in the men's 200 and Kai Robinson and Cam Myers had they
- 6:25just run there 5000 meters and they'd literally come out to
- 6:29sort of spectate the 200. And we were sort of situated at
- 6:31a decent point for them to come and catch it.
- 6:33And so in between the false starts, so sort of everyone was
- 6:36hanging around and we use that as an opportunity to snag a
- 6:39photo. And then later on, sort of Jess
- 6:41Hall was hanging around getting photos with all the kids and
- 6:44yeah, our kids all jumped in and got a photo, which was super
- 6:47nice of her, which is something they'll look back on very
- 6:49fondly, I think, which is cool. I.
- 6:51Did I did see that Jess done a photo with someone and the child
- 6:55had asked her if she could wear hair medal.
- 6:57So the child's got a gold medal round there.
- 7:00Now that's cool. Before we go into the results,
- 7:02then one of the things I thought as well, sorry, was flashbacks
- 7:06to this time last week and think about how you feel and talking
- 7:10about Grand Slam track and considering how much money and
- 7:13endorsement and hype and all that sort of stuff, the world's
- 7:17international fields that they had.
- 7:19And it it's just, I don't know if we're just being biased
- 7:22because this has been held in Perth, but it's it doesn't
- 7:25compare. Was it?
- 7:26Yeah. Like, I mean, I was like, we'll
- 7:28get into some of the races, but the excitement that I felt with
- 7:31some of those performances, yeah.
- 7:34Like, you could. I was so much more excited as a
- 7:37spectator watching what on the weekend than I was for any of
- 7:40the glam Grand Slam results. Yeah.
- 7:43And it's so exciting to see athletes getting really well
- 7:45remunerated. But there must be some sort of
- 7:47balance that they can strike, you know, a better balance than
- 7:50Grand Slam and perhaps what was what and the national
- 7:53championships, you know, because yeah, yeah, I certainly we could
- 7:58follow their stories a bit more. There was so much more drama.
- 8:00Like the the events were just, yeah, we're just really good.
- 8:03And it was a combination like where I feel like we're in a bit
- 8:06of a unique position. And there's like various media
- 8:09outlets have said this like Australia, like it wasn't the
- 8:12quality of athletes and the quality of times that were being
- 8:15run in A lot of the events was like pretty insane.
- 8:17Like the new, the world standards now are intentionally
- 8:19set it at A at such a high level that the quota is not meant to
- 8:24be filled by, by reaching that standard like the quota of the
- 8:27event. So you're only meant to get say
- 8:2960% of your field run the standard in the 12 month window
- 8:32that there is to qualify. So, but we saw we saw WCQ
- 8:37lighting up on the board continuously on that Sunday,
- 8:39didn't we? Like there was people just
- 8:40running so fast, which is full credit.
- 8:43So I think the quality of athletes that were there, but
- 8:46the competition was exciting, but it was the standard was
- 8:48ridiculously good. Yeah, I think it bodes well for
- 8:51Perth, doesn't it? Like we commented on everyone
- 8:54running fast times and in particular the sprinters, they
- 8:57benefit from the slight tail went down that straight there
- 9:01and unfortunately that court gals out a couple of times.
- 9:04Like it seems to be the only time it would blow too hard to
- 9:07make it illegal would be when he'd run.
- 9:09But yeah, I did. Like.
- 9:11Around other distances. Oh no, I just saw her on a like
- 9:14a media outlet, someone talking about they're like someone not
- 9:17from Australia because he obviously has run mostly like
- 9:19he's running what, Sydney, Queensland and now here.
- 9:22And I think, I don't know, like most of the times he's run, it's
- 9:25been with like an illegal tailwind and everyone's like
- 9:27what's going on in Australia. How bloody windy must it be over
- 9:30there? Because he just, I don't think
- 9:33it's like that all the time. I think he's been a bit unlucky.
- 9:35Yeah, well, we do feel the effects of the usually we we
- 9:39forget about the tailwind down the back street and we're always
- 9:42complaining about the headwind on the other side, aren't we?
- 9:45Well, yeah, we never took half a lap, that's for sure.
- 9:48So we never, we never really see the the upside of it.
- 9:51But yeah, let's cover off some of the results then.
- 9:54So we had the women's 800 firstly was won by Abby Caldwell
- 9:59in 2 minutes. Dead well, two minutes, 0
- 10:03seconds .53. So she just picked Claudia
- 10:06Hollingsworth there. She was 2 minutes, 0 seconds .9.
- 10:09So I think Claudia potentially would have been favorite there.
- 10:13So a little bit of an upset, do you think?
- 10:15Yeah, I think I tipped Claudia and I think given how she ran at
- 10:19Murray Plant a couple of weeks ago, I think that would have
- 10:21been. Yeah, I think you're right.
- 10:23I think she would probably would have started as the one you
- 10:25would have tipped first. So yeah, a bit of a.
- 10:27Bit of an. Upset.
- 10:28And I was just going to say a bit of a theme in terms of in
- 10:31terms of that the sort of like if you took who finished in
- 10:34front of who at Murray plant and you just assume the form guide
- 10:37is indicative of, you know, who should be winning at nationals.
- 10:40Yeah, there's a few of those and I think that was one of them.
- 10:44Yeah, and that's a good little narrative or story in itself,
- 10:47isn't it? Because often with athletics,
- 10:50like the fastest person wins or the fastest person wins and
- 10:54almost all of the time. So it's nice to see different
- 10:57people racing against each other and different out, well, the
- 11:00same people racing against each other with different outcomes.
- 11:03Yeah, and the dynamic sort of changes so that Mori plant mate
- 11:07where a lot of the athletes raced each other, a lot of the
- 11:10events were paced, whereas here it's a championship, so there's
- 11:13no pacing. So and there was a bit of wind
- 11:17along that back straight. So yeah, it may be that I think
- 11:21that in and of itself, yeah, just shifted the dynamics and
- 11:25because every because the margins are so close, it's it
- 11:27wasn't obvious who was going to win, which was cool and that
- 11:30those times are pretty fast. Are they, were they qualifiers?
- 11:33But I think they've already run probably the standard anyway.
- 11:36Yeah. What is the qualifier?
- 11:37Let's see if I can pull it up. But I didn't actually see that
- 11:40race. I think was it yesterday
- 11:42afternoon whilst we were kind of still just getting back and
- 11:45stuff, but I did read or see that apparently Abby went
- 11:50through the bell dead lat and then like came through everyone
- 11:54because I think like 800 meters is more of like a specific
- 11:57special distance, isn't it? Whereas Claudia kinda can go up
- 12:01the distances as well to the 15 and.
- 12:03Then did you catch the? Qualifier was 159.
- 12:06OK, there you go to. The close, yeah.
- 12:09So the men's was won by people in 143.79, which was a
- 12:15championship record, a PB and a World Champs qualifier.
- 12:19So I think again, we just missed this because we talked about it
- 12:21as we were walking in, didn't we?
- 12:23And you said that beat, that's a new PB from, was it the
- 12:27Olympics, his previous one? Yeah, I thought he he ran the
- 12:30Australian record. I thought it was in the semi
- 12:32final of the 2021 like Tokyo Olympics.
- 12:36I remember him running really quickly then, which is why he
- 12:38sort of firmed into sort of medal contention for the final
- 12:42at Tokyo. So for him to be and he was, you
- 12:45know, he was sort of top of the world at that point in time.
- 12:49The the event sort of evolved from that point from like 143
- 12:53being probably as quick as you needed to run to, you know, the
- 12:57is it when you're new and able what what's is it crop the
- 13:02Canadian and a few of those guys that I rock that are just
- 13:06running, you know, what are they 141 for 142 Now the event sort
- 13:10of gone up a a level again, but I mean, 143 is flying.
- 13:14And did you see the I saw the highlight of this race?
- 13:18Did you see the second lap? Yeah, it was like he just put
- 13:22them to bed, didn't he, once he got going?
- 13:24Like he's had a difficult couple of years.
- 13:26I think hasn't he passed two or three years, he hasn't been in
- 13:28his best form. He hasn't been racing amazingly.
- 13:31So it's cool to see him back at his best.
- 13:33Yeah. And he's sort of originally from
- 13:35Perth, so I, I suspect maybe he, he probably felt that and he was
- 13:40racing here because again, he sort of spent so much of his
- 13:42time living on the East Coast, but he sort of went to high
- 13:45school here. So I would imagine he'd feel at
- 13:48home in Perth and probably, I like to think that probably
- 13:51helped him get back to his best. Yeah, giving the crowd a bit of
- 13:55AG up like 20 meters out because he knew he'd he knew he'd, yeah,
- 13:59got rid of. That was.
- 14:01A second there, yeah. Yeah, yeah, He's looking back,
- 14:04wasn't he? So I think and.
- 14:06Those guys were lightning. Hey like for 2nd and 3rd?
- 14:09One, yeah, the way that 44. Five.
- 14:13Yeah, flying. And such a strong run from Luke
- 14:16Boys as well, because I think he'd done most of the work, like
- 14:18he took them out. He can take a lot of credit for
- 14:21it being so fast. Obviously he'd ran his legs a
- 14:24little bit for the last 50 meters, but all three of them
- 14:27ran the standard for Tokyo in September, which is obviously a
- 14:31big tick for them. Yeah, you probably think that's
- 14:33the three that go after that. So on to the men's 15 and that
- 14:37was won by the main events. Cam Myers, the 18 year old
- 14:41sensation there in 334.39, followed by Adam Spencer in
- 14:47second in the 334.57 and Ollie Gore third in the 334.6.
- 14:53So I know you didn't get down to the track on Saturday, but did
- 14:56you catch this on the on the TV? Yeah, I watched a like a replay
- 15:00of it. It looked awesome.
- 15:02Like it looked like there was a great atmosphere on that
- 15:04Saturday night. And that race was Yeah, it was
- 15:07really cool. Did you see Cam's caption in his
- 15:11Strava the No pacer? No worries.
- 15:14I thought that was a cool one liner and probably sums up sort
- 15:17of how he felt about the race, which was because he sort of as
- 15:21maybe we thought he might sort of he needed to sort of apply
- 15:24pressure or to or you know, initiate the race from a ways
- 15:28out. Because he and that was sort of
- 15:30what he did after the pacer dropped out at that Murray plant
- 15:32mate. And then the question is, was,
- 15:34is someone able to hold on and kick over the top and no one
- 15:36could. He was sort of too strong.
- 15:38Yeah, it was interesting because the the first lap was pretty
- 15:41slow. I think Ollie got out pretty
- 15:43hard and went to the front and you you didn't see Cam get drive
- 15:47to the front the way he usually does.
- 15:49He was in the pack for a, for a lap, which was like, what's
- 15:52going to happen here? Like this could play out a
- 15:53little bit differently. Like is he, is he adopting some
- 15:56anger Britain tactics here or what?
- 15:59But then I think after 400 meters Max, like business as
- 16:03usual resumed. Then he he took to the front and
- 16:06started to string the mouse for everyone, maybe because they got
- 16:12almost a free first lap. He didn't really get rid of
- 16:15anyone, he just strung them out and most people were still
- 16:18there. So it was still kind of an
- 16:19exciting finish and particularly last lap because it did come
- 16:23down to like a bit of a Sprint. And then Adam Spencer, I think
- 16:27he won last year, didn't he, when it was in Melbourne, came
- 16:30back from the US and won. I don't know if that was just my
- 16:33lack of knowledge of Australian athletics at the time, but it
- 16:36seemed like kind of a big upset when he did that.
- 16:39But yeah, he came in second and he ran down Ollie because Ollie
- 16:44was doing working quite hard to kind of try and stay attached to
- 16:48the back of Cam in second there. For most of the races.
- 16:51Cam was applying the pressure, but yeah, like 334 after a slow,
- 16:56fast lap. It's not fast in itself, but
- 16:58when you apply that context to it, it's pretty fast.
- 17:00Yeah, I think Adam sort of like he ran.
- 17:03He was a last minute call up to a diamond leg a couple of years
- 17:06ago and was sort of like a light into like London and he ran I
- 17:10think 331 maybe. And it was like, where did that
- 17:13come from? Because he was more like a three
- 17:15mid three 30s guy. And so then everyone sort of
- 17:18like he was sort of a bit on notice, but then he sort of
- 17:21wasn't held in the you know, there was sort of him, but you
- 17:23always thought there was a bit of a level up to the likes of
- 17:26Ollie and Stewie when like Ollie won like com games and Stewie's
- 17:29run like, you know, under 330 and was sort of top three and so
- 17:33many Diamond League 1500. So you sort of thought those
- 17:35guys were sort of a tier above. So when he did win, it was sort
- 17:37of like, oh goodness, well, it's that's not what we would have
- 17:40expected. So I think, yeah, I think now
- 17:43he's sort of is more based on recent form.
- 17:46You thought he'd be quite competitive, but it's sort of
- 17:49this I thought maybe went by as maybe more of the form guide.
- 17:53Do you do you think that was probably how we thought maybe it
- 17:56would play out? Yeah, I think so looking at the
- 17:58result, but going back to our predictions and I was trying to
- 18:03re listen to it before because we couldn't quite remember what
- 18:05we said, could we? And I think I very rudely
- 18:09overspoke you. So I didn't get get a prediction
- 18:13from you for the men's 15, but I remember I, I.
- 18:16Would have said camo as one. And always wanted to say yeah,
- 18:20yeah, yeah. I, I went for Ollie.
- 18:23Didn't know because I remember saying about the the fairy tale
- 18:26that was in my head about him making a comeback.
- 18:29And then I almost felt like the stars were aligning because I, I
- 18:33spoke to someone who's kind of like in his camp, if you like.
- 18:35And he was telling me that he's giving him this big motivational
- 18:39speech about how how he's going to take Cam down and tactically
- 18:42how he can do it. And that he needed to be like
- 18:45right on him from the start and not let him settle and not let
- 18:48him be comfortable. And that they were practicing
- 18:50these 150m finishes, the premie. And then as as you're watching
- 18:56the race unfold and you're seeing Ollie right on his heels,
- 18:59I'm like, oh shit, he's going to do it, isn't he?
- 19:01But yeah, Cam, Cam's just kind of like in a league of his own.
- 19:04Yeah, too good. Well in on on Saturday he was
- 19:07anyway. So the women's 15.
- 19:09Then we had Jess Hall winning in four 1136, Sarah Billings second
- 19:14in 411.51 and Georgia Griffiths in 412.09.
- 19:20So again, this was slow from the from the gun.
- 19:23I think I noticed that like a 73 and a 72 first lap, first two
- 19:28laps, which is like just slower than three minute K pace, which
- 19:31sounds very fast, but for a 1500m race, it's not past at
- 19:35all. And then the race was from about
- 19:38500 meters out, Jess took to the front and kind of put the hammer
- 19:42down and it wasn't like the slow wind up.
- 19:45It was like, right, let's go. And from here, no one's getting
- 19:48past me. And that was kind of how it was
- 19:51like everyone was able to go with her.
- 19:53She didn't gap them, but just no one could get up onto her
- 19:56shoulder and certainly not overcome her.
- 19:58And so Sarah Billings finished really well there because I
- 20:02think she was in the pack or third for most of the race.
- 20:06But she finished really strongly down the 100 and then came past
- 20:09Georgia on the predictions for that one.
- 20:11Actually a best check. I had Jess and you went Claudia,
- 20:17but I don't think, I think Claudia was ADNS in that one,
- 20:20wasn't she? So I let you off.
- 20:21Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 20:22I think she just focused on the Yeah.
- 20:25It's actually worth mentioning. Was it nearly an upset by Sarah
- 20:27Billings? I think so.
- 20:29Yeah, 'cause I can't remember Marie Plan, but I don't think
- 20:33Sarah had a great race or was it the indoors and she didn't get
- 20:36out of the heat in China, so she'll be glad to get a good one
- 20:40under about there. But just on on the subject of
- 20:43Claudia, did you you see that she signed to Grand Slam as a
- 20:47challenger for the next meet in Miami?
- 20:49No, I didn't. That's cool.
- 20:51That'll be interesting. Yeah.
- 20:52I wonder whether about yeah, whether Jess has had some
- 20:55influence in that onto the five thousands then the men's was the
- 20:59men's was one Jesus. I I didn't have the results in
- 21:02front of me then I was thinking who was it 1 by and now now the
- 21:05results are here. I'm like, of course, the grace
- 21:08absolutely flying this year. Seth O'Donnell in 1349.3 follow
- 21:14by Cam Myers Dublin up coming back on the Sunday but couldn't
- 21:18quite get the win. He was second in the 1349.6 and
- 21:23Kai Robinson could not double down on his win in a 5000 meters
- 21:28over Seth this time and finished third in the 1350.31.
- 21:32So we what's up? One together, didn't we?
- 21:35And that was quite exciting. Yeah, that was, that was pretty
- 21:39cool to watch live, like, yeah. Jacob Cox from South Australia,
- 21:44he sort of set tempo early because they sort of were, you
- 21:49know, no one was wanting to take the pace on early.
- 21:52So he sort of took it upon himself and was sort of got
- 21:54things up to closer to that sort of 14 minute tempo.
- 21:57And you could see there's like a temperature gauge in the
- 21:59stadium, wasn't there, which was sort of between say 27 and 29°.
- 22:03So it's reasonably warm and there was wind along that back
- 22:06straight. And so, but he was happy to sort
- 22:09of, you know, try and make a bit of a race of it, which was,
- 22:13which was good, but things didn't really kick off until I
- 22:18think inside the last. It was within the last two KS,
- 22:21probably with about four laps to go.
- 22:23Kai Robinson maybe went to the front maybe inside 4 laps.
- 22:28Umm, and I think I clocked like the last K, the last K may have
- 22:31been like 227 and the last like might have been like 50-4,
- 22:34something like that. So they like closed hard.
- 22:37And yeah, the race was sort of on.
- 22:39It was an interesting dynamic. So, so if we think back to the
- 22:42like that Maori plant mate, you had a pacemaker setting that
- 22:45sort of 1320 pace. Remember Max, who ran really
- 22:49well in both the 15 and was also in the 5K from Perth.
- 22:52He he sort of set up that race and then Seth sort of took over
- 22:56from that pace race and Kai managed to kick over the top.
- 23:00Whereas this being a championship race, the tempo was
- 23:02set slower. And then it was wasn't until
- 23:05sort of Kai Seth, where I thought Seth would have made a
- 23:08move early and but he didn't. He just hung back.
- 23:12And then because you had Cam in the race for the first time and
- 23:16you had sort of Kai who's, you know, just won that Murray Plant
- 23:195K just won, you know, one of Australia's only ever sort of
- 23:23middle distance global medals a few weeks before that.
- 23:26He's sort of odds on favorite, but he sort of knows he he can't
- 23:28leave it to a burn up because Cam's in the race and Cam's
- 23:32never won run a 5K before. So he's sort of still trying to,
- 23:35in his mind, get his head around how to navigate the distance.
- 23:38So Kai's sort of incentivized to go earlier rather than later.
- 23:42But then you sort of thought Seth would be the one just
- 23:45because he's a bit wild, would just do that for him anyway.
- 23:48And he didn't. And so then that left it to Kai
- 23:50to take it up. And so then as soon as you saw
- 23:52him sort of make that drive, you sort of, I just assumed that Cam
- 23:56would sit on his shoulder and then maybe kick over the top
- 23:58because I left it for only the last sort of mile.
- 24:02But that's not how it played out.
- 24:03Yeah, I just think it's AI just can't get my head around the
- 24:05fact that Seth's managed to win that race against Kai and Cam
- 24:10and was even Jude Thomas in there?
- 24:13Or there was others anyway, besides the podium?
- 24:16Like it wasn't just those three who would like the elite
- 24:19athletes in there and like how has he won it when it comes to
- 24:22like an 800 meter kick in like a relatively slow race, like he's
- 24:26out kicked those guys. It's just obscene.
- 24:29So Jude's run 1309 I. Think a month ago exactly.
- 24:33I think I watched it back before and I don't know if if it
- 24:37actually was or if it's just a different vest, but you know
- 24:40that like kind of 1 running vest he's been wearing, like the red
- 24:44stripy white thing, He's got it inside out with his bib on
- 24:49inside out. I don't know if that's something
- 24:52to do with the Brandon or like what, but it just kind of sums
- 24:55him up, doesn't it? He's just wild.
- 24:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mullet flowing and just like not
- 25:00caring about how he looks in terms of that last 100 meters,
- 25:03literally just throwing his body forward as quickly as he can and
- 25:07just rolled them. Yeah, Cam couldn't close him
- 25:09down. So they sort of what they gapped
- 25:11Cam at the bell and then Cam was as bad.
- 25:14Cam was fifth maybe with like 2:50 to go and then started
- 25:17closing in on them but couldn't quite wheel them in.
- 25:20And Seth just found another gear in the last 100.
- 25:23Didn't he sort of sat on Kai's shoulder And then just in that
- 25:26last one 5000 made just sort of pulled up alongside and just
- 25:30threw the kitchen sink at it. And it was man, I was, I was up
- 25:33and about. I couldn't, I couldn't believe
- 25:34it. That was like a not something
- 25:36you'd see and just that real like underdog.
- 25:38You know, you sort of you've got 2 full time professional
- 25:42athletes and this guy who like took up running and over and
- 25:45it's just a fizzy like a local physio has like a real OCA sort
- 25:49of accent. And I don't know, just seems
- 25:52like a really nice person. And not that the other guys
- 25:54aren't incredible people either, but it was just very cool.
- 25:57It's like young, Young when you see Kai and Seth side by side,
- 26:01like Kai's got this gracious. Like.
- 26:04Perfect running form. And then you just see Seth put
- 26:08the hammer down and his arms just go even wider and you think
- 26:11how how does that movement actually make you go faster?
- 26:15And I think Kai even like, has a little glance and he's he's
- 26:19clearly working incredibly hard at this point.
- 26:22He's probably thinking like, are you like, what?
- 26:25How are you going past me right now?
- 26:26Yeah. Like, I think he can handle that
- 26:29to him, but he's like, what's? We should live in hindsight when
- 26:34when Kam and Kai are still behind us and we asked them for
- 26:37a photo we could have said hey boys, what?
- 26:39What are your thoughts on getting beat by Seth there?
- 26:42Or should talk our attention? To me, but it ended up in the
- 26:45scrub. And although we couldn't get any
- 26:48reaction from Kamal Kai, we did get a few words from the great
- 26:52man Seth himself. So I reached out to him on
- 26:54Instagram and just asked him if he had any words he'd like us to
- 26:58share during the episode. And thankfully he responded.
- 27:02And yeah, grateful for that. He said thanks so much for the
- 27:06support. Was up against some quality
- 27:07opposition. So I focused on listening and
- 27:10making sure I stayed patient but still be aggressive when the
- 27:14time was right. So grateful for all the support.
- 27:16We'll discuss my plans with my team soon.
- 27:19So it sounds really exciting what Seth's got in the works
- 27:22there. And we're really grateful as
- 27:25Easy Double Podcast that he's taking the time to respond to us
- 27:28and give us a couple, give us a bit of insight there into what
- 27:31he's thinking during the race. And then lastly, the women's 5K
- 27:37was won by Jess Hall doing the double in 15 O 2.74, which is a
- 27:42championship record and APB Georgia Griffiths second in 15 O
- 27:452.92 to PB for her and Rose Davis third in 15 O 3.83.
- 27:53And this one again was a little bit of a slow start, but then
- 27:57once you see the field settle, it's it's very familiar and that
- 28:00Izzy goes to the front and she done a lot of work for a lot of
- 28:04the race. Well, pretty much all the race,
- 28:06didn't she? She she just got to the front
- 28:09and made it pretty tough for everyone straight away.
- 28:11So instantly that separated, kind of like those who were
- 28:16going to be involved who weren't.
- 28:18It was, yeah, I think like Wacey was there, friend was there with
- 28:24us, and he was sort of lap timing.
- 28:26And they were sort of consistently knocking off 72 to
- 28:2874 second laps, which is, you know, going around that sort of
- 28:31around that sort of 1510 pace, which in that, given that it was
- 28:35fairly warm, is pretty like solid time and around that sort
- 28:39of world championship qualifying standard of just under 15
- 28:43minutes. So they were sort of moving
- 28:44pretty well, weren't they, in terms of making a race of it.
- 28:47But Izzy wasn't able to drop too many from that main, was she?
- 28:51It was sort of, it was pretty. There's quite a few that managed
- 28:56to hang tough for the majority of the race which was which was
- 29:00good to watch as well. Yeah, and almost as the as the
- 29:03race unfolded, my confidence in his he was growing because like
- 29:08at first I was like, oh, going to the front again.
- 29:11It's a, it's a usual tactic and like kind of we know how it ends
- 29:15up usually like, but as she like kind of grounded out and you
- 29:20could see maybe that underlying marathon fitness coming in,
- 29:23you're like, oh shit, she actually looks pretty good here.
- 29:25Like it's starting to as the lap time is going down like 4 laps
- 29:29to go, 3 laps to go, 2 laps to go.
- 29:31And she's she's still kind of on the front and 1 by 1 they're
- 29:34dropping. But then there's Jess, Georgia
- 29:38and Rose, the change of gear that they've got, as long as
- 29:40they can keep themselves there for the last lap, then they're
- 29:43they're just always going to finish so strongly, aren't they?
- 29:46And that's what we saw. Yeah, and it was interesting
- 29:49like because do you remember there's at a Peck 10 when Rose
- 29:55was able to just like rent just closed super fast in that last
- 29:58200, sort of burnt like Lauren Ryan and looked very strong.
- 30:03She sort of looked to do something similar.
- 30:05And I was like, oh, wow. I wonder what that will how that
- 30:08will stack up against Georgia and Jess in terms of like their
- 30:11shorter distance. But this is sort of it requires
- 30:14some sort of strength to get to that far into the race.
- 30:17And like she closed really well, but they would just like a level
- 30:21again, weren't they, in terms of how quick they could, they could
- 30:23close, which was interesting to see.
- 30:25The sort of speed endurance was just like there was just another
- 30:29another gear that they could find and they were just too
- 30:31good. I think it kind of shows like
- 30:33the difference between or almost like the the levels within elite
- 30:38run and two. So you've got the likes of
- 30:40Georgia Griffiths and Rose Davis who are making Australian teams.
- 30:46But then Jess Holt she's clearly a cut above because a week ago
- 30:50she's run the one 58800 and then now here she is run winning the
- 30:555th 5K champs and 50 and low in a championship record like.
- 31:00And I think, but I think that's what makes this Seth's run more
- 31:04extraordinary because like you can build a similar narrative.
- 31:07I know Kai's not Uber fast over a short distance, but like both
- 31:12Jess and Kai have come off the back of winning like a global
- 31:14medal. I just those sort of those
- 31:16polished athletes and then even Cam, you know what he was doing
- 31:20at world it like in the indoor circuit earlier in the year.
- 31:24So then what did what Seth doing beating them?
- 31:27Like I just just still like crazy.
- 31:30Just couldn't believe. I still can't believe it was so
- 31:32cool. And how good was it to be like
- 31:35in the stadium live whilst Gout was doing his thing?
- 31:38After watching it all unfold last week and the drama and the
- 31:42excitements and all, kind of like the media carry on that
- 31:46went with it, I was so intrigued to see how it would unfold.
- 31:50And I think it definitely lived up to expectation for me, yeah.
- 31:54Like I was excited to be there sort of as a distance fan, but
- 31:59yeah, being there for that run. And he sort of just exploded in
- 32:03that last 50, didn't he? And we sort of were on a bit of
- 32:06a strange angle angle. We were situated just past the
- 32:10finish line on the on the sort of like away from the finish
- 32:16area. So the athletes on the finishing
- 32:18straight were running straight towards us, it felt.
- 32:20And so you sort of didn't get a feel for if they were marginally
- 32:23ahead. It was hard to tell.
- 32:24But he, you could just see him streaking away and just running
- 32:27so fast. And the atmosphere, the crowd
- 32:29was just absolutely electric. And the whole stadium, you like,
- 32:33it's people cleared out, literally.
- 32:35But there's still events on after it.
- 32:37But they people came that people bought tickets to see him in the
- 32:41flesh and he. Yeah, he was sort of worth the
- 32:44price of admission, wasn't he? Yeah.
- 32:46I like that time as well in 19.84.
- 32:49I know the the wind was off, but he he stayed in the block.
- 32:53Not that I'm a Sprint expert, but some some reason and it is
- 32:57kind of visually evident that he stayed in the blocks a little
- 33:00longer, didn't he? Kind of playing it safe because
- 33:03they've been a couple of false starts.
- 33:05So I think even if you, if you make that a legal wind, he
- 33:10probably still runs sub 20, doesn't he?
- 33:15So, and then just like kind of the performance that he put on
- 33:18after the run was almost as exciting as the run itself.
- 33:22Like he went around the whole perimeter of the track and high
- 33:25fived everyone who's there. And like if anyone wanted the
- 33:29selfie, he was doing selfies all the way around.
- 33:33It's just, it's so good for like the kid, he's literally 17 and
- 33:38he's kind of thriving off. It's not even pressure.
- 33:40Like it's just hype and he's he's thriving off it.
- 33:44I think even for like grassroots athletics, like in terms of
- 33:48that, sort of like, I still remember being in the stadium
- 33:52the day Patrick Johnson ran under 10 seconds for 100.
- 33:57We were sort of like collecting hurdles as sort of like
- 33:59volunteers as kids. And we got these T-shirts that
- 34:02were handed out as part of that. And I remember him signing it
- 34:05and like that sort of stuff like, you know, pulls you into
- 34:09the sport. And so that the like a day, an
- 34:11afternoon like that where you get to have a picture with Gout
- 34:13Gout or Jess Hull or Cam Myers, it's sort of pretty special.
- 34:16So yeah, I thought it was a really cool event.
- 34:19And I thought it was really nicely capped off as off by the
- 34:23mixed 4 by 400 as well. That was sort of like the final
- 34:27event of the program. And as a proud W Australian,
- 34:30excuse me, we saw Team WA get up and one of our teammates, Adam
- 34:34Cobb was the was in the was, was whizzing around and absolutely
- 34:40flew through the 1st 100. And they sort of grabbed the
- 34:43baton and yeah, ran a great leg and sort of set it set the, set
- 34:48the team up well. And they ended up, I think, I
- 34:51think it was a, might have been a national record or a national
- 34:54championships record time. And they sort of just edged out
- 34:58New NSW. They sort of went into the final
- 35:01leg a few meters behind and we're able to run over the top
- 35:04of them. And the West Australian crowd
- 35:05got right behind it. And it was just such a such a
- 35:08cool way to finish. What was a really cool mate.
- 35:11I know we've banged on about it, but it was a yeah, it was really
- 35:14nice. It was sort of a highlight in
- 35:16terms of, you know, local athletics.
- 35:18That was as good as you could imagine it, I think, and script
- 35:21it. I'm intrigued to see how it's
- 35:24reviewed by other people, like are we just biased because it's
- 35:29been held in WA or was it genuinely like as good of a meet
- 35:33as we've made out? But nevertheless, we enjoyed it
- 35:35for what it was. So OK, then we're onto the
- 35:38training week. So do we want to quickly fly
- 35:41through what we've done leading up to the weekend?
- 35:44We can kind of bounce off each other in the same way that we
- 35:47did last week. If you want to kick us off, I'll
- 35:50just pull mine up. Yeah, sure.
- 35:52I mean, Mondays for me, just the usual commutes to and from the
- 35:55office. So yeah, nothing, nothing
- 36:01particularly special there other than my what diet.
- 36:05And then she was, we were at the track and sorry, we weren't at
- 36:13the track because the track was closed for junior nationals.
- 36:16So our traditional Tuesday track workout we did, but we moved it
- 36:20to Lake Munga. So we had a, we'd only have a 4K
- 36:25lap build I think, but we just did a 1500 metre lap threshold.
- 36:30We did that with a couple of the guys that were racing nationals,
- 36:34the two Toms into 10 by 500 metres at at VO2 and we just did
- 36:41this up and down A like a part of the path that was almost 500
- 36:45meters. I think it was just shy, but
- 36:47it's sort of for all intensive purposes was all we needed.
- 36:50I just remember my legs being dead from racing the bridges
- 36:55last Sunday so I was just keen to sort of get it done and yeah,
- 37:00not, not hurt myself really. Yeah, I mean, it was pitch black
- 37:03that little, well, that 450 meter stretch as well, wasn't
- 37:07it? By the time we're doing the reps
- 37:09up and down there. So I don't know if that helped
- 37:11with the kind of increased adrenaline or if it didn't help
- 37:15because we didn't know where we were planting our feet, but we
- 37:18seem to get it done. OK.
- 37:20Anyway, apart from the, the last couple of reps, I wouldn't say I
- 37:23was hanging on, but I was like, oh shit, yeah, I haven't done a,
- 37:26haven't done a video two session for a week or so here.
- 37:29And I'm starting to feel it in, in my legs.
- 37:32But I was, I was, I was made-up to get that one done because it
- 37:36felt like it had been a little while since I'd done anything to
- 37:39to that intensity. So it was nice to kind of get
- 37:43back involved with that sort of work.
- 37:45Nice. And then, yeah, for Wednesday,
- 37:48just for me, it was the usual commute in and and steady run
- 37:52home added a little bit on again.
- 37:53But yeah, nothing particularly special or notable for me on a
- 37:58Wednesday. I started, I could feel myself
- 38:00getting like recovering from the race on Sunday, which was good.
- 38:04But yeah, just ticked it off. And I think what I've been doing
- 38:08is just been instead of Dublin, which the irony has been pointed
- 38:12out that we've named this podcast Easy Double.
- 38:15And I seem incapable of producing a double run right
- 38:21now, but I'm just trying to manage, manage my way to the
- 38:24start line. So like the double S have been
- 38:27swapped out for cross trains basically.
- 38:28So like on on the Monday and Wednesday, I'll do one run and
- 38:32one cross train and just kind of try and replicate the load that
- 38:36a double easy run would provide, which is just jump on the cross
- 38:39trainer and try and get that heart race up to an an easy run
- 38:42heart rate, which is actually quite hard on the cross trainer,
- 38:45to be honest with you. You've got to be, you've got to
- 38:47be pumping it. And when you're in a public gym,
- 38:50which is quite small, it's, it's not the most, not the most
- 38:55flattering exercise you can be doing absolutely stomping on a
- 38:58cross trainer, but you've got to get it done.
- 39:02And then, yeah, Thursday just to easy run in the morning, and
- 39:05then I had in the afternoon 4 by 5 minutes at sort of threshold
- 39:10pace or just above, and then two minutes recovery between each
- 39:14sort of continuous running. I just remember it feeling like
- 39:19I didn't have to force it to sort of get up to sort of the
- 39:22pace as I was hoping to hit, which was a good sign.
- 39:25So yeah, I think I was 304 to 305 pace for the first three and
- 39:29then the last one, I think I was on that pace.
- 39:31But just the way the workout was, you had to do a little bit
- 39:34of AU turn out on that freeway side of that path at Lake
- 39:37Munger. And in amongst all that, the GPS
- 39:40sort of wigs out a bit and you're doing AU turn.
- 39:42So I think my pace doesn't quite look that flattering, but I
- 39:45think I was up until the last and up until I had to do that, I
- 39:48was sort of sitting on pace, which was good.
- 39:50And yeah, it all felt all felt fine, which was encouraging.
- 39:54And then you had a, I think you were, You ran Thursday morning,
- 39:58didn't you? Yeah, I will go into that, but I
- 40:01was just going to ask you on yours.
- 40:03In terms of like the bigger picture, obviously you've just
- 40:05come off that 10K race on the Sunday and was your week leading
- 40:11into that you didn't really come down at all.
- 40:14Did you kind of like rode a full training volume or slightly
- 40:19reduced it but not there was no no taper, was there?
- 40:23No, I think I'd like. I was going to have the option
- 40:26of maybe running up to 90 minutes on the Saturday before,
- 40:29but I only ran 40 and I didn't run again Saturday afternoon.
- 40:33And I could off. And I'm probably glad I didn't
- 40:35because I raced, you know, like a pretty hard effort.
- 40:37So it's slightly down on what the previous weeks had been.
- 40:41But yeah. And then the intention was to
- 40:43try and get back into training again this week, knowing that
- 40:47again, I was going to do a bit of a race on the weekend, but
- 40:50I'm sort of trying to keep my training load and training
- 40:53intensity relatively high because I sort of don't want to
- 40:57freshen up too. So, so, but I also need to be
- 41:00careful not to overdo it. So I think this week was more if
- 41:03I feel up to doing the workouts on the Tuesday and Thursday,
- 41:06I'll do them, but I wouldn't do them.
- 41:08I'm sort of adding in quite a bit of intensity.
- 41:10So I just need to be careful. So I'm sort of bearing that in
- 41:12mind and sort of knowing that we're going to, I sort of knew
- 41:15on Thursday, though if we do like a threshold workout, I'm
- 41:18going to have a couple of days of job before Sunday, which
- 41:21which will you know, which helps.
- 41:23Yeah, I know that was only an observation of just I've just
- 41:26made now on hearing you kind of spell it out and I'm realizing
- 41:29kind of how how tiring the past couple of weeks must have been
- 41:33for you because you've just rolled session after session and
- 41:36a couple of well, one race in there.
- 41:38So yeah, you must be really glad to be reaching the two weeks out
- 41:42marker. But yeah, Thursday morning for
- 41:45me. Well, Thursday was due to be a
- 41:47steady run. So like kind of that Zone 2 work
- 41:53like 3:45 to 350 pace. So like comfortable, but a bit a
- 41:58bit like bottom end building from the bottom up to kind of
- 42:01work, work up to that marathon pace and make marathon efforts
- 42:05feel easier just through kind of having a lot more endurance in
- 42:09the bank. So I actually heard that.
- 42:13I don't know, this name might not mean anything to anyone, but
- 42:16if you listen to the Inside Running podcast, which I imagine
- 42:20people might like, if you like me and Dean Jordan Donnelly is a
- 42:25guy who they've had on there quite a bit in the past.
- 42:28And he kind of featured heavily during the Olympics last year
- 42:32because he was working on and he was kind of jumping on daily and
- 42:36providing updates from like what the athletes are up to and
- 42:39stuff. And I heard that he was in
- 42:41Perth. So I reached out to him because
- 42:43he's actually from where I'm from, the Wirral, and literally
- 42:48could bizarrely drive to his house in about 10 minutes.
- 42:52So he came down and met me on the river and we've done a
- 42:56steady run together. And yeah, we ran 340 twos, 45
- 43:03minutes and heart rate was good, like 1:54-ish.
- 43:09And it just felt really comfortable.
- 43:10We were chatting the whole way and we, we ended up running just
- 43:13because we weren't kind of watching the clock.
- 43:15We ran 48 minutes and we're like, oh shit, we've gone over
- 43:18best, best, call it off. So then I've done just done a
- 43:21couple of strides afterwards. And that felt really nice to do
- 43:25that on a Thursday morning because usually it's it's on a
- 43:28Thursday evening, we head down to the lake and do those
- 43:30sessions. So I felt like I'd won the day
- 43:32by getting that one out the way with nice and early it.
- 43:35Would have been fun. It would have been easier to run
- 43:37when you have the likes of someone Jordan to run with.
- 43:39It sort of makes the motivation to get up in the morning, you
- 43:43know, makes it pretty easy, which is.
- 43:44Yeah, well, maybe if we had a Patreon platform then there
- 43:49would be some stuff worth worth sharing, but there's also some
- 43:52things you've got to got to keep to yourself.
- 43:55But yeah, he's, he's full of absolute gold, as you can
- 43:58imagine. I, I didn't struggle to get away
- 44:00then, but I was just keen to listen to all the things he had
- 44:03to say because he's just got so much knowledge and experience.
- 44:07So yeah, it was very fun. And the fun thing is he's
- 44:10actually, he's heading over to Ballarat and he's doing the half
- 44:14and I think he's looking to kind of run a similar pace to maybe
- 44:17what I'll be looking to run to go through halfway.
- 44:20And so hopefully you might be able to help me out there or or
- 44:23drop me and do dirty on me, I mean.
- 44:27That'd be nice, if you can catch a lift for the first half,
- 44:31that'd be good. Well, yeah, hopefully there'll
- 44:32be plenty of others around anyway, but we shall see.
- 44:36I still don't to be honest on that.
- 44:37I still don't even know kind of what halfway looks like for me.
- 44:41I'm, I'm oscillating daily between 30 to 62nd variables.
- 44:46But I guess that's, that's what happens as you get close to race
- 44:50day, isn't it? You start thinking about all
- 44:51these things, but we'll probably save the that chat for next
- 44:56week. Yeah, in terms of my next couple
- 44:59of days, Friday was just the usual commute runs, so two of
- 45:04those. And then Saturday I just did an
- 45:07hour easy. And then, yeah, I had a bit of a
- 45:11busy day family wise, so I went over and collected you.
- 45:16You were finished at the stadium by the time I rolled past to
- 45:19collect you on the way to Bunbury.
- 45:22But yeah, that that was sort of my running day.
- 45:24Grab grabbed you and we sort of headed to Bunbury for Saturday
- 45:27and night arrival. It's sort of for anyone
- 45:30unfamiliar, it's two hours South of Perth car.
- 45:34So a bit of a breakdown to to where the race was and we sat at
- 45:38a hotel that was almost opposite the the park.
- 45:41That was the start finish area, which was super handy.
- 45:43It was really nice. Yeah, I did actually think like
- 45:45it would have been so much easier if we we just took like
- 45:48some sort of recording device in the car because we just, we
- 45:52basically recorded a podcast on the way down and then another
- 45:55podcast on the way back. Like we had four hours of
- 45:57content right there. So yeah, good point.
- 46:00We could have just done it on the way home.
- 46:03We had the thought on because of could have got you your early
- 46:07night. Yeah, when you, when you grabbed
- 46:09me, things were a little bit stressful, weren't they?
- 46:12Because I got in the car and I said, oh, Oh, no, like my
- 46:15girlfriend's gone out and we've just fostered this bloody cat
- 46:19like 24 hours prior. And I've just got back from the
- 46:22track, grabbed my bag and quickly tried to spot the cats
- 46:26in the flat. And you were like, Oh yes, so
- 46:30where was it? And I was like, no, no, like
- 46:32that's the end. I tried to see where it was.
- 46:35I couldn't see it. And now I'm sat in the car with
- 46:38you. So as the journey unfolded,
- 46:41this, it was 2 hours, it was stressful. 2 hours down to
- 46:44Bunbury in communications back and forth to Becky to see if
- 46:47she'd, she'd found the cat in the apartment.
- 46:51But unfortunately we went to bed and there's still no sign of the
- 46:54cat. So didn't have the best sleep on
- 46:59Saturday night. We got to the right.
- 47:01When we got to the hotel in Bunbury, I was worried you were
- 47:03actually gonna let the cat out of the bag.
- 47:07I wish the cat was well, truly in the bag and he was stored in
- 47:11a very bizarre place. But the story ends well because
- 47:14we did find them on Sunday evening.
- 47:17So literally over 24 hours after we last seen him, we got in bed
- 47:23on last night on Sunday. And at this point, like there's
- 47:26not much communication going on in the flat because we're kind
- 47:29of residing to the fact that the the cats gone missing.
- 47:33And it's more than likely my fault because I was last in the
- 47:37flat prior to the cat being seen, so I've left some sort of
- 47:40door open or something Anyway. And then we get in bed last
- 47:43night, lights off, silence. And then we just hear like this
- 47:47cry. So then we flick all the lights
- 47:50on, running around this small flat.
- 47:52Still can't find the fucker and like he's obviously here because
- 47:57we've literally just heard them cry.
- 47:58Or are we? Like is our mind playing tricks
- 48:01on us? He gets back in bed, turns
- 48:03lights off 5 minutes later I cry again and I'm like, he's in the
- 48:06wall. Like he's literally in the wall.
- 48:09So he goes into the bathroom and there's like a laundry sink next
- 48:14to the washing machine and it's he's basically crawled into the
- 48:19plumbing of of the units and he was just happily chilling in
- 48:25there. So it seemed because the whole
- 48:27we couldn't access it because they kind of tucked around the
- 48:30back in between the washing machine and stuff.
- 48:32But the hole was massive. So it wasn't as though he was
- 48:34stuck. He just took himself off and was
- 48:36playing games. Just a little hard out.
- 48:40Yeah, so the the cat returned a little bit too late, but he's
- 48:46good and well now. Anyway, back-to-back to running
- 48:49stuff. We arrived in Bunbury safe and
- 48:53sound and the hotel was very pleasant, wasn't it?
- 48:56Hotel was lovely, great choice. Nice can pick him.
- 48:59Yeah, it was. Well traveled by you, obviously.
- 49:02So we it was a quick unpack of the bags and jumped into bed.
- 49:06Wasn't it was about 10:00. We, we pulled in maybe and we
- 49:10were in bed 2 separate single beds just for the avoidance of
- 49:14doubts. And so then Saturday, well that
- 49:19was Saturday. In fact, I should preface that
- 49:22with I'd done half an hour and drills and strides on Saturday
- 49:25and actually felt like garbage. I don't know why but just felt
- 49:28dead stiff and like I couldn't really move but that was fine.
- 49:33So Sunday morning we got up at 6:00 AM and we didn't have our
- 49:38bibs did we? We were a 730 kick off, but the
- 49:42as Dean said, the hotel was literally on the start line.
- 49:45So we just had over, grabbed our bibs and came back to the room,
- 49:50got ready quickly and we were out.
- 49:54Was at 7:00 AM on the dot pretty much because we had a 5K warm up
- 49:58to do. So kind of we were pushing it
- 50:00for that. We just headed out along the
- 50:02coast and done 5K, whatever pace that was like 450 or something
- 50:07probably, and made it back to the start line just in time for
- 50:11a couple of stretches, a couple of strides, nothing like last
- 50:14minute, but everyone's there in the start pen and the, the race
- 50:19directors counting down and giving everyone the the G up and
- 50:23the motivational speech. And Dean and I probably look
- 50:26like a pair of idiots doing strides next to the fence and
- 50:29throwing a hamstring curl here and there.
- 50:32We we stepped on the start line just like a couple of minutes
- 50:37prior to kick off and the race director shoves the microphone
- 50:41in my face because he must have thought you look like you look
- 50:44like a soft lad or you look like a man who's maybe going to try
- 50:50and win today. And I quickly deflected and sent
- 50:54him Dean's way and said, Oh, yeah, I think you might want to
- 50:56go and speak to the man down, down the other end there.
- 51:00So it came, in other words, with you, didn't he, Dean?
- 51:03Yeah, I don't think I said anything overly insightful.
- 51:05I probably should have just said good luck to everyone.
- 51:07But yeah, said something short. You sort of, you know, you're
- 51:11not at your most creative moments before you're about to,
- 51:15you know, get stuck into a fun run, are you?
- 51:17Well you should have said make sure you turn left when you do
- 51:20the out and back on the Jessie. That might have helped me.
- 51:23Should have. We should.
- 51:25Should we go into that now? Yeah, go on.
- 51:27So talk us through what what was kind of set for you and what
- 51:30what was the goals of this run? So I think, yeah, so normally
- 51:35two weeks out or in the past a couple of weeks out, we've done
- 51:38like a of a marathon, we've done a overspeed under speed sort of
- 51:42session. So you sort of spend time
- 51:44quicker than marathon pace and then time recovering that's
- 51:46slower than marathon pace. So that was the intention and
- 51:51it's often around sort of 21 K's.
- 51:53And so this sort of bumbry half marathon timed quite well and
- 51:59they, you know, kindly put on some some prizes for us if we
- 52:02finished inside the top three and ran the course.
- 52:04So I thought we'd thought we'd double the, you know, we could
- 52:09use that as an opportunity to, you know, make the and, you
- 52:13know, these sorts of sessions you're getting later in your
- 52:16marathon block. So you're sort of a bit looking
- 52:18for some extra motivation perhaps, because doing these
- 52:20sessions solo can be a bit tricky and running more laps of
- 52:23like Munga would probably send us a bit mad.
- 52:24So anyway, so that was part of the brief is to sort of do
- 52:28something that's a bit quicker than marathon pace and then some
- 52:31time recovering. So when I've done this before,
- 52:33it's two KS on one K float, but Rafford suggested 2 1/2 K half
- 52:38AK for this. So that's what I did.
- 52:41So it was 7 by 2 1/2 KS and I think the pace guides was 307 to
- 52:45311 and the floats were, I didn't remember looking at the
- 52:49floats, but I just assumed it would be maybe around 3 1/2
- 52:52minute K pace. So that's sort of what I set out
- 52:55to do. I had my heart rate monitor on
- 52:57and I'd sucked down, carried a couple of big shells in my hands
- 53:01and then I had, I'd had one just before we started.
- 53:05So that was sort of the plan for nutrition because I couldn't
- 53:07grab bottles from every anywhere.
- 53:09Yeah. So that was sort of my brief
- 53:10going into it. And so that's what I sort of had
- 53:12in mind for the paces. The course is probably not
- 53:15completely flat. Like we chatted to the we
- 53:18chatted to Chris and Simon from the War podcast beforehand and
- 53:22they were giving us some heads up because I think the website
- 53:25said it might have been 270 meters or 240 meters.
- 53:30Would it be for the half marathon?
- 53:31And we're like, oh gosh, that sounds very high.
- 53:34And then I think they mentioned it's probably closer to like 80
- 53:37meters for the half marathon, which was much more realistic,
- 53:40which is, which was good to hear.
- 53:43But you could sort of as you were doing it, it's not
- 53:44completely flat, but there were certainly some nice sections of
- 53:47Rd. that you were on. And it was certainly there's a
- 53:50few pinch points, but for the most part you could find rhythm
- 53:53in different places. There was a bit of wind around.
- 53:55It wasn't super cool, but it was sort of you sort of fairly
- 53:58familiar with a lot of the conditions.
- 54:00I didn't feel like it was too adverse in terms of, you know,
- 54:03impacting performance too much. So I sort of thought with all
- 54:06that in mind, thought I'd try and target the paces set and
- 54:09just go for and my heart rate. It'd be a bit of a guide as to
- 54:12whether or not it was achievable or not.
- 54:15How about yourself, Ryan? What were you sort of thinking
- 54:17going into it? Yeah.
- 54:18So my guidance was similar but different in that it was to be 5
- 54:24* 3 K on with A1K float, which would give me 20 K.
- 54:29And then obviously I would just run the last 1.1 K to finish the
- 54:33race off. And again, I think the pace
- 54:37guidance for me was around 3:20 to 3:24, if I remember rightly.
- 54:44And yeah, my first two were three 20s.
- 54:50And I remember I've carried the bottle with me for the first Rep
- 54:53because, I don't know, I just wanted to have some liquid with
- 54:56the carbs in. And my shoulders were all tense
- 55:00and tight and I just didn't feel comfortable running with this
- 55:02bottle in my hand, which is pretty obvious.
- 55:05So I managed to keep it until the 1st float and then I just
- 55:09downed most of it then and got rid of it.
- 55:11And then the second Rep I think was 321 maybe.
- 55:15And we've, we've kind of ran out along the coast here, haven't
- 55:18we, for a couple of KS and then turned inland and kind of done
- 55:22like a circular around some Parkland.
- 55:25So that was that was quite pleasant as as Dean alluded to,
- 55:28it was a little bit rolling hills, but it's nice.
- 55:31We're running on the road, which is nice, nice open wide roads.
- 55:36And I was looking at the back of Dean for as much of it as I
- 55:38could and keeping them insight because this was uncharted
- 55:41territories as we're going to find out.
- 55:45And then we kind of done a circular and came back along
- 55:49that coastal Rd. that we just ran out past the star area and
- 55:54then kind of up towards the lighthouse there.
- 55:56And I think this was maybe the start of the third Rep or like
- 56:00throughout the third Rep for me. And yeah, that, that hill up
- 56:04towards the lighthouse pinched a little bit.
- 56:07And then you do kind of like a, a bit of a snake going back
- 56:11downhill. But they're quite short sharp
- 56:13bends, as in like you'll run for 10 metres, do a 18010 metres, do
- 56:17a 180. So at that point, like I, I kind
- 56:20of looked at my watch and just like had a little giggle to
- 56:23myself and thought, Oh, well, this wraps out the window
- 56:26because then you try and you try and recover it immediately, a
- 56:29couple of rolling hills and there's just no way of getting
- 56:32back into a rhythm and almost the average pace is gone.
- 56:36So you're just looking to kind of work hard for the rest of
- 56:39that Rep. But it was nice because there
- 56:40was a, there was a house on the right there.
- 56:43So the coast is on our left and there's a house on the right
- 56:46with them on the 2nd floor. Someone's got a set of decks on
- 56:50the balcony, the wall. This must be like 8:00 AM and
- 56:53he's just absolutely blazing tunes.
- 56:56So that probably helped me get a couple of seconds back in in
- 56:59that Rep in the average pace. And then we've kind of carried
- 57:03on along the coast a little bit and got to a Jessie where we've
- 57:07headed out and back what must be maybe 500 meters up this Jessie
- 57:13to around about 10 point. And everything's going
- 57:16swimmingly here. Me and Dean of High 5, there's
- 57:19Dean's been out and back and I'm heading on my way.
- 57:22And we're like, yeah, this this workout's going great.
- 57:25Dean's a shoe in for the win. This trip's going to pay off
- 57:28like exactly what we wanted from it.
- 57:30And then I've came back down the Jessie and turned right instead
- 57:34of left. And what was on the left was
- 57:38like another 10K worth, of course, which I just haven't
- 57:43seen at all. So I've just turned right, had
- 57:45the back towards the start and within about 400 metres or so I
- 57:49knew something had gone wrong. And I was thinking, Oh yeah,
- 57:52that was back at that, that E, because I was spat back out into
- 57:56all these marathoners or 10 KS because there's a couple of
- 57:59different distances going on. And it just didn't feel right
- 58:03that I was in the middle of this marathon race.
- 58:07But anyway, I just, I tried to try to contextualise it as quick
- 58:13as it could and just be like, well, the purpose of this is to
- 58:15do your last work out before the marathon.
- 58:18So let's just get the work done. You know that you can run for
- 58:22another 6K out back on the first half of the course.
- 58:26And let's just finish this off. But I did think, Oh well, I'll
- 58:30just, I'll make sure that I run the 21 K and just come back
- 58:35through the finishing shoot as I would have if I'd run the race
- 58:38anyway. But I'm misjudged how far I
- 58:40needed to run out to come back. So I've got back to the start
- 58:43area around 20 K. So I'm just trying to top up my
- 58:47last K running around the roundabout and over the grass
- 58:50Oval. And there's a couple of
- 58:52volunteers who are kind of directing the the 10K in the
- 58:55marathon, which is going on at this point.
- 58:57And I've obviously got a bib on the chest.
- 59:00So at one point this woman's like I had to say to someone
- 59:03else, where's that guy going or what?
- 59:05What's he doing? Because I'm literally just
- 59:07making up my own course and running around in circles.
- 59:11But yeah, the the last, I think the middle Rep maybe didn't say
- 59:14this when we went up to the lighthouse was 3/28.
- 59:18And then I think A325 and A320 four.
- 59:21And I've finished off. Maybe I ran across the finish
- 59:24line 7320 odd they might have been, but I didn't pay much
- 59:28attention to that because I was a little bit pissed off with
- 59:31myself that I'd run the wrong way and forfeited.
- 59:34What would have been a nice would have reimbursed the cost
- 59:37of the hotel and maybe my race entry, but there we are.
- 59:40The workout is done, that's that's put it to bed.
- 59:45I think it's just the training, hopefully.
- 59:46You got the training that you training you're looking for,
- 59:49right? Yeah.
- 59:50I mean, that's it at the end of the day.
- 59:51It wasn't despite the whole wrong turn thing and whatever,
- 59:55just looking at the session as it was, it probably wasn't, I
- 59:59don't know. It didn't feel as comfortable as
- 1:00:02I'd have liked as I would have liked it too, which I realized
- 1:00:06pretty early on, which is maybe why I didn't enjoy it very much
- 1:00:10because I just, I wasn't very comfortable out there.
- 1:00:13But then on reflection, I haven't looked at my heart rate
- 1:00:17data. It's a bit weird because my
- 1:00:19heart rate kind of comes down as the reps go on, which maybe just
- 1:00:23shows that I did lose interest and.
- 1:00:26Lack of concentration and wasn't able to kind of make myself work
- 1:00:30hard enough throughout to kind of make those paces a bit
- 1:00:33quicker, which is a bit of a shame in itself.
- 1:00:36But I guess there's fine margins between the workout that I did
- 1:00:40do and a good workout. So I'll just put that one to bed
- 1:00:44and be thankful that that was not the day of the race.
- 1:00:48And and your calf, there's no, no issues.
- 1:00:50There anymore? There wasn't Joran yesterday.
- 1:00:53Evening, my heel was a little bit swollen and unhappy, but
- 1:00:56this is kind of how it's gone the past couple of weeks since
- 1:00:58we've resumed to running on the back of a session.
- 1:01:02It will kind of swell up and stuff and then the next day when
- 1:01:05across train and kind of deload it, it comes back.
- 1:01:10So I'm kind of I've discovered the margin of error that I've
- 1:01:14got and how far I can kind of push it comfortably to be able
- 1:01:18to be ready to go in two days time again and kind of learn
- 1:01:21what I need to do to manage legit in between.
- 1:01:23And I was saying before actually to the physio Tom that I'm glad
- 1:01:28now because I've got through the past two weeks where that was a
- 1:01:32little bit of a worry for me. Like I knew that the calf thing
- 1:01:36was fine, but it was more so am I going to be be able to kind of
- 1:01:39get these last two weeks worth of training and done without
- 1:01:43kind of deload them massively? And I have.
- 1:01:46So that that's good because I know that like the tape is going
- 1:01:50to kind of start to kick in from here.
- 1:01:52So I know that I'll be feeling relatively fresh on the well,
- 1:01:55very fresh on the start line. And yeah, we'll be good to go.
- 1:01:58Maybe not in absolute optimal shape that I would have thought
- 1:02:01maybe I was going to be in four or five weeks ago, but not a
- 1:02:05massive, I'm hardly unfit, I'll be in good shape.
- 1:02:09So yeah, very good. How did How?
- 1:02:12Did yours finish off? Sorry, I had to get that wrong
- 1:02:16turn off my chest there. Yeah, I think on that wrong
- 1:02:20turn. I remember when we loop back and
- 1:02:23we high fived because we'd done a loop at the end of that that
- 1:02:27point. And then for whatever reason,
- 1:02:29the lead cyclist sort of directed us back onto that
- 1:02:31footpath. We ran all the way along there
- 1:02:33and then right at the end, he's sort of Bunny hopped back down
- 1:02:36onto the road to then veer like a sharp left to then go left.
- 1:02:39So I think when I ran past you all like, gosh, I'm, I'm worried
- 1:02:42that it's misleading us being back on that side of the road
- 1:02:45because that's why you would have naturally veered right
- 1:02:47rather than come down and gone left.
- 1:02:49Umm, albeit that we were running a looped course that the
- 1:02:53marathoners had start had already run some, they started
- 1:02:56out before us. So there would have been
- 1:02:58everyone that's run before us on that course would have been
- 1:03:00getting directed left. I would have thought.
- 1:03:01So it's a bit of a shame that someone didn't didn't call out.
- 1:03:05But yeah, it's an unfortunate part of fun running sometimes is
- 1:03:10some sort of those course directions.
- 1:03:12But yeah, very sorry to to have learned and sorry to experience
- 1:03:16the fact that, yeah, you were a you went off course.
- 1:03:20They did kindly encourage us to come back, didn't they, after
- 1:03:24the race and offered you free entry gear.
- 1:03:26So I think the war guys might have made a mention or at least
- 1:03:31have mentioned to me about your you being on their Road 2 series
- 1:03:34for next year. So watch this space, listeners.
- 1:03:37Yes they did DM me. Before actually and I said yeah,
- 1:03:41we can title it as my debut at Bunbury half soon as I haven't
- 1:03:45technically done it. But yeah, no, mine was good.
- 1:03:50It was sort of, yeah, my paces were sort of as yeah, as they
- 1:03:54were prescribed. So started around that three
- 1:03:5711312 for sort of the 2 1/2 K reps and then I floated probably
- 1:04:01a bit too quick, but it was sort of some of the sections of the
- 1:04:03course were like quicker sections for those floats.
- 1:04:05So they're probably a bit flattering, but I sort of held
- 1:04:08the floats around that sort of 320 to 325 pace.
- 1:04:11And then we joked about this on the when we were chatting to
- 1:04:14some of the guys after the race. But there's this nice section
- 1:04:18you sort of run in towards this sort of the prevailing like
- 1:04:20easterly wind, I think for kilometres, say 14 to 17.
- 1:04:25And then from 17 through to 20, you've got this really nice sort
- 1:04:29of tailwind and a real flat section.
- 1:04:31So that's where I had my last couple of reps.
- 1:04:34And so that was sort of a bit easier to sort of hit pace or
- 1:04:36run it slightly quicker and it sort of wasn't as intentional.
- 1:04:40My heart rate was sort of, you know, it was there was heart
- 1:04:42rate creep throughout. It did get up, but it didn't, it
- 1:04:45sort of didn't get too carried away.
- 1:04:46So the effort felt pretty, pretty good.
- 1:04:49And yeah, I enjoyed the course. That run up to the lighthouse
- 1:04:52bit feels like a bit of a pinch to it.
- 1:04:54That's probably the hardest part of it, but yeah, I really liked
- 1:04:58it. I'd sort of never been into
- 1:04:59Bunbury before. I think we'd have to make it a
- 1:05:01family trip for next year. It was a really nice week, like
- 1:05:05really nice course and the locals were super friendly.
- 1:05:07I got a heap of on course support and it was just a fun
- 1:05:10way to yeah, fun morning and you came across the line and what
- 1:05:15time? Was it about 60?
- 1:05:187:30 Maybe just sunder Yeah, just a just a touch quicker than
- 1:05:22my. PB yeah, not intentional, that's
- 1:05:26for sure. Scissor arms.
- 1:05:29At the end, Seth. O'Donnell down the queue last
- 1:05:31last float well and truly out the.
- 1:05:33Window might have been a bit quick actually.
- 1:05:35Yeah, but downhill. Downhill.
- 1:05:41And then what did we do? We just had a 5K cool down then
- 1:05:45we went back to the room and just quickly changed and then
- 1:05:49went and done the cool down, smashed the chalky milk and then
- 1:05:52hit the. Road to get down to the
- 1:05:53athletics in the afternoon. I I only thought before
- 1:05:56actually. Did you take those ketones?
- 1:05:58Because I forgot about them. Put them in the fridge as well,
- 1:06:01didn't you? No, I realized.
- 1:06:03Yeah, We. Donated them to room 104.
- 1:06:08Oh God, I. Hope, I hope someone, some
- 1:06:11unknowing innocent couple doesn't open the fridge and
- 1:06:14think they're part of room service and think oh what's
- 1:06:17this? I'll try.
- 1:06:17I'll sample this and I would love to know the feed the
- 1:06:21weekend of their lives. But then, well, when we were in
- 1:06:27the room after once getting showered and stuff, we go got
- 1:06:30the cold and we and I thought I might have been on for the prize
- 1:06:33money, but yeah, it just teased me with the free entry, which
- 1:06:36did come through today. So that's that's nice for next
- 1:06:39year. And yeah, we, we hit the road to
- 1:06:41get back for yesterday afternoon's track, track stuff.
- 1:06:44So it was a pretty full on weekend, wasn't it?
- 1:06:47And you had a couple of birthdays in the immediate
- 1:06:49family. So if it felt full on for me,
- 1:06:52God knows how it was for you. Yeah, no, we had, yeah, two
- 1:06:55birds with. One stone.
- 1:06:56So we had yeah, birthday party. Well, you know, birthday events
- 1:07:00on the Saturday into Saturday evening.
- 1:07:02But but yeah, no survived, which is good fun weekend.
- 1:07:07And just to finish off that training week.
- 1:07:09What what was your case? What's the total damage?
- 1:07:12I think it was like 147. Maybe just under 150, I think.
- 1:07:15Yeah, nice. But with a.
- 1:07:17Lot of good quality work in there.
- 1:07:20Yeah, not decent weight. I think mine.
- 1:07:23Looking at it is 100 and. 12K of running and then maybe about 3
- 1:07:27or 4 hours of cross training. So yeah, decent for me as well.
- 1:07:32Yeah yeah. Spines.
- 1:07:33Why you're feeling a bit tired? Probably.
- 1:07:34Yeah, the the impact of the cross trainer.
- 1:07:37Hits the muscles differently, that's for sure.
- 1:07:39And I think that might be kind of one of the reasons why I was
- 1:07:42feeling a bit flat and heavy during the running.
- 1:07:44But we shall see. Can't be making any excuses now,
- 1:07:48can I? No excuses there.
- 1:07:54I've made my bed. I shall lie in it.
- 1:07:56So we're going to jump across to Owen, who's tuning in from
- 1:08:00Brisbane Air Force. Take us away, Owen.
- 1:08:03Hello guys. It's Owen here and unfortunately
- 1:08:06I'm not with the guys this week. I got the dates mixed up and
- 1:08:10then currently in the airport in Brisbane so I thought I'd be
- 1:08:14with the lads live. However, I am currently
- 1:08:17recording from a corner of Brisbane airport so if you hear
- 1:08:20some background noise, desperate times call for desperate
- 1:08:23measures. I'm just working with what I've
- 1:08:25got. So I've had a lovely beautiful
- 1:08:28road trip along the East Coast. Got spoiled with the weather,
- 1:08:31probably only got a bit of rain on the very last day in the
- 1:08:34Sunshine Coast. So yeah, really, really good
- 1:08:37trip. Again, little to no running done
- 1:08:40on my behalf. I'm having a little bit of a
- 1:08:42break. The leg is coming around slowly
- 1:08:44but surely. But yeah, I'm still taking it
- 1:08:47very easy and slow on my return. So I've got, again, not much
- 1:08:53running done, but I've had a really good trip.
- 1:08:56The highlight of the trip would probably, I've done a skydive in
- 1:09:00Cairns, a sun, a sun sunrise skydive.
- 1:09:04And yeah, that was incredible. Jumping out of a plane at 15,000
- 1:09:07foot. It was, yeah, sort of a once in
- 1:09:10a lifetime experience. Another highlight was the
- 1:09:13Whitsundays. Like that beach is an absolute
- 1:09:15joke. It's just a postcard.
- 1:09:17The only bad thing is you can't swim the water because of them
- 1:09:20little. Your kanji and jellyfish,
- 1:09:23they're like the size of like the nail on your little finger.
- 1:09:26But yeah, if they sting. Yeah, Sorry if you can hear
- 1:09:29that. It's just announcement going off
- 1:09:32to prove that I actually am in the airport.
- 1:09:34I'll just let it play. All right.
- 1:09:37Yeah. Literally.
- 1:09:37Or kanji, jellyfish. Do you like the size of the nail
- 1:09:40on your little finger? And if they sting yet, you are
- 1:09:42in serious trouble. I think you've got like 2 hours
- 1:09:44to get to the airport. If you're in with Sunday's, the
- 1:09:47closest airport is Mackay. So you don't feel the effects of
- 1:09:50being stung for half an hour and then it takes like 40 minutes to
- 1:09:54get to Mackay. So yeah, you're sort of cutting
- 1:09:56it for time, which is why you wear Stinger suits and you just,
- 1:10:00if you're not wearing a Stinger suit, you basically don't get in
- 1:10:02the water. So yeah, but with Sundays,
- 1:10:04again, stoning place. Another highlight was Kigari or
- 1:10:09Fraser Island. Really cool place.
- 1:10:12It's like, it's like the largest sand island in the whole world.
- 1:10:16So yeah, I got tore. You're in a little.
- 1:10:18I was in a little like 4 wheel drive bus and yeah, you just get
- 1:10:22a tour in the island. It's pretty cool to bring to all
- 1:10:24those different spots. Seen a dingo, which was pretty
- 1:10:26cool. Just a wild little dog.
- 1:10:28Yeah. So my trip has been, has been my
- 1:10:30trip has been really, really good.
- 1:10:32And yeah, just ready to get back to personnel.
- 1:10:35That was the highlights of my trip.
- 1:10:37The worst, the like the worst part of the trip was the
- 1:10:39humidity in Cairns. And if you live in Cairns, I
- 1:10:44salute you that like I could not live there.
- 1:10:48You're literally walking around 2 minutes, not even 2 seconds
- 1:10:52and you're just sweating like that's walking, never mind
- 1:10:55running. I don't know how you would even
- 1:10:56go about running in Cairns or final Queensland like it's it's
- 1:11:00actually a joke. So yeah, that was a downside.
- 1:11:04And another bad thing about the holiday was we done a layover in
- 1:11:08or stop over in Rockhampton and it was genuinely the police.
- 1:11:13People from Rockhampton don't take offense to this, but I just
- 1:11:15didn't feel safe in that place. Yeah, a lot of funny dodgy
- 1:11:19people around there. So yeah, that was only A1
- 1:11:21nighter. I got out of there as quick as
- 1:11:23possible. But other than that, yeah, we
- 1:11:25were so lucky with the weather. Sunny 95% of the time and all
- 1:11:30the trips were really sunny as well.
- 1:11:32Really cool. And yeah.
- 1:11:34So All in all, far North Queensland is a really nice
- 1:11:39place. Sorry, another announcement.
- 1:11:46And I'm back. So yeah, the lads will give me a
- 1:11:48couple of questions. Ryan is trying to be funny
- 1:11:50sitting asking are they familiar with the Irish accent in far
- 1:11:54North Queensland? And my answer to that is there's
- 1:11:56a truckload of Irish up in far North Queensland getting their
- 1:12:0088 days done because we have to do a bit of farm work like the
- 1:12:04Commonwealth countries. So yes, I met a lot of people
- 1:12:08that knew my friends back home because Ireland's so small.
- 1:12:11So like, I knew people that they know and yeah, they they could
- 1:12:14understand what I was saying. Basically.
- 1:12:16Another question I got that I have any FOMO from nationals.
- 1:12:19I absolutely did. When I seen the photo of you
- 1:12:23guys, Ryan, Dean Whit, Cam and Kai Robinson and Zafacchione, I
- 1:12:30was extremely jealous and like even just watching all the races
- 1:12:34from the stream, like the crowds looked unbelievable there.
- 1:12:38It would have been so nice to have been there in person.
- 1:12:41But yeah, I had serious, serious FOMO.
- 1:12:45But hopefully, well, I'll never be here again so you never know,
- 1:12:49I might come back for nationals in the future.
- 1:12:51Another question from the lads Ryan asked, what are your
- 1:12:55thoughts on Man United? For everyone who listens, I am a
- 1:12:59United fan and put it in Australian terms.
- 1:13:03Man United's current situation is pretty similar to West Coast
- 1:13:07Eagles situation. We are both super shit.
- 1:13:09So all you West Coast Eagle fans know what I'm going through.
- 1:13:12So yeah, it's not fun, but hopefully we can turn a corner
- 1:13:16in the near future and actually win a game.
- 1:13:18But yeah, next year might be our year, so I'm just going to leave
- 1:13:22it at that. On my YouTube, I didn't really
- 1:13:25watch much. I've got a couple of Irish
- 1:13:28Youtubers lined up in the coming weeks.
- 1:13:31But I'll leave it to the lads to do YouTube Diaries this week.
- 1:13:34And my double trouble, my personal double trouble would be
- 1:13:38the humidity in Cairns or Farnall QLD.
- 1:13:42If you live up there, you are built differently.
- 1:13:46I don't know how you guys do it. Yeah, I was.
- 1:13:49If I was living up there, I'd have to have a couple of pairs
- 1:13:51of T-shirts, spare T-shirts on me the whole time.
- 1:13:53And. And yeah, guys, that's a little
- 1:13:55update from me, really. Next week I will 100% be be
- 1:14:02recording with the lads unless the plane goes down or something
- 1:14:05like that, which God forbid those.
- 1:14:07But yeah. So guys, I shall see you next
- 1:14:10week. Hopefully I'll have done some
- 1:14:12more running. And yeah guys, that's it at the
- 1:14:15moment. Ryan and Dean, you guys are
- 1:14:17keeping this podcast afloat. I've been slacking.
- 1:14:20So hopefully next week we will return to normality and yeah,
- 1:14:25back to normal. All right guys, Owen here from
- 1:14:28Brisbane Airport, do you want to talk to us about?
- 1:14:33What you've seen on YouTube this week, you sent them through
- 1:14:36earlier. It's pretty good.
- 1:14:37Yeah. This is this is sort of.
- 1:14:39Inspired a bit by Seth O'donnell's run.
- 1:14:42So I feel like, you know, like I love an underdog.
- 1:14:47And that's what I thought Seth was.
- 1:14:49And I've sort of followed athletics for a while, and these
- 1:14:55are a couple of races. So the NCAA sort of US
- 1:15:01collegiate athletics is probably undisputed lead the top tier of
- 1:15:07sort of college athletics and for for.
- 1:15:11And so they have a really sort of competitive program and
- 1:15:15there's been there's been success in terms of Aussie
- 1:15:18success over there over time. But during this sort of period
- 1:15:23of which I'm referring to sort of say from 2013 through 2016,
- 1:15:28there was a guy in, in the US college system known as Edward
- 1:15:32Cheserick or King Chez, as he would, he would become known as
- 1:15:35because he sort of ruled the roost.
- 1:15:38And I think he, he, he won 17 NCAA titles, which is sort of
- 1:15:43quite coveted titles to win. And he somehow in his Four
- 1:15:46Seasons of athletics, you know, but over the course of sort of
- 1:15:50indoor track, outdoor track and cross country just dominated.
- 1:15:54He sort of came in as a freshman and surprisingly won NCAA cross.
- 1:16:00And then he won, went on to just like just this top, top athlete.
- 1:16:05And so as a result, he sort of had a monopoly on a lot of the
- 1:16:08prizes. But on a rare occasion there
- 1:16:11might there was some Aussie underdogs that were sort of
- 1:16:13competing. And there was a few Aussie
- 1:16:16athletes that ran for a college called Villanova.
- 1:16:19One of them was a Perth based guy, Sam Mcentee.
- 1:16:22And Grainy used to coach him back in the day when he was a
- 1:16:25high schooler. And he went over to Villanova
- 1:16:27and at the same time Geordie Williams, who I think might be
- 1:16:30partner, his partner might be Sarah Billings, but he he was
- 1:16:34over there and so was Pat Tiernan all at the same time.
- 1:16:37So there's sort of three Aussies all competing for Villanova at
- 1:16:40the same time. And there's they in US track,
- 1:16:44they have a, a meeting where they do a four by mile.
- 1:16:47So you have 4 people run for your college team and those 4
- 1:16:51athletes, they, they, it's a relay and it's sort of first to
- 1:16:55finish. And this NCAA 4 by mile flow
- 1:16:58track back in the day, they used to release, they used to call it
- 1:17:01the tasty race of the week. And that's why if you find this
- 1:17:04one on YouTube, it's referred to as tasty race.
- 1:17:06It got uploaded from sort of low tax flow tracks website to
- 1:17:09YouTube maybe 7 or so years ago. But it's such a good race and
- 1:17:13it's really good because it's such a tactical affair.
- 1:17:15So it really hots up in the sort of fourth leg when Geordie
- 1:17:18Williams takes over, but he just lost to chairs in the DMR the
- 1:17:22day before, which is the distance medley relay.
- 1:17:24So Villanova and and sorry. And for further context, King
- 1:17:29chairs used to run for Oregon and Oregon at the time.
- 1:17:31So Oregon track club were like the premium, you know, like the
- 1:17:35Rolls Royce track club. Like during that time, the Nike
- 1:17:38Origin Oregon Project was in full flight with the likes of Mo
- 1:17:42Farah and Galen Rupp sort of dominating the 2012 Olympics.
- 1:17:46You know, that was that era where Mo Farah was, you know,
- 1:17:48dominated again in Rio 2016. So Oregon just had this shine to
- 1:17:52it. And so then you had this sort of
- 1:17:54group of like Aussie underdogs trying to stick it to the Oregon
- 1:17:57Ducks. And so it was just a really good
- 1:17:594 by mile race. I won't spoil the ending, but
- 1:18:01one to watch. And then that was against King
- 1:18:03Chez and then the next one was the end.
- 1:18:06So that's the first one, this 4 by mile race.
- 1:18:08The next one is the following year.
- 1:18:10That's in 2015. Then you flash forward to NCAA
- 1:18:12cross country the following year and Pat Tianan who's on a bit of
- 1:18:16a who's running really well. Pat and Sam I think made it into
- 1:18:20the Olympics in 2016 at Rio in the 5K.
- 1:18:23So they were running really well and Pat sort of races.
- 1:18:26Pat tried to beat King Chez the year before in NCAA cross, which
- 1:18:31Chesaric had won the first two years of his collegiate sort of
- 1:18:34career. And then Pat tries to basically
- 1:18:37run Chesaric off his legs and just sends it.
- 1:18:41And Pat and and Chesaric just like clear the field.
- 1:18:44They're like 30 seconds in front of everyone, but Pat just can't
- 1:18:47drop him and and Chesaric just, you know, sort of just sits,
- 1:18:50sits, sits and with about a couple of KS to go, just drops
- 1:18:53him and runs away with it. But Fast forward to 2016 and Pat
- 1:18:57has a different plan and the race is really good.
- 1:19:00Hales has probably heard me play this race because this this race
- 1:19:03I used to plan like repeat to I may have fallen asleep to it
- 1:19:07once or 1000 times. So she's like, I know, I know
- 1:19:10this race inside now and it's a it's a really good race and I
- 1:19:13won't spoil the ending again, but it's another good one where
- 1:19:16good sort of underdog story. SO2 good races, link them in the
- 1:19:20show notes. They're a couple of ones where
- 1:19:23you know some Aussie favourites are sort of causing a bit of an
- 1:19:26upset. Yeah.
- 1:19:28Thanks for sending them through. Because I watched the first one
- 1:19:30that you're referring to before and I've heard other people talk
- 1:19:34of that as well, but just never made the effort to go and watch
- 1:19:38it. But I did watch it before and
- 1:19:40yeah, it's there's so much drama in it and it's such a good
- 1:19:43format as well. Isn't it like 4 by a mile?
- 1:19:47It's something you don't see otherwise.
- 1:19:49Yeah, good dynamic, Yeah. So.
- 1:19:51Listeners, please let us know if.
- 1:19:53You are watching these videos and also if if you're not, then
- 1:19:56that's fine. But we're just assuming that a
- 1:20:00lot or some of you may be just fully endorsed running nerds
- 1:20:04like ourselves. So we're trying to bring you
- 1:20:06bring you some fresh content or some some vintage content as
- 1:20:09Dean likes to go down that route.
- 1:20:12And with the double trouble, as I said earlier, I'm not sure
- 1:20:16whether Owen will have submitted one or not.
- 1:20:18I asked him to try and dig one out from his trip, maybe a non
- 1:20:21related double trouble. But otherwise to play it safe,
- 1:20:26we'll go with the $6 handling fee.
- 1:20:29Not that this is hardly going to come across ticketmasters desk
- 1:20:33isn't know how they're going to give an absolute shite about
- 1:20:35what we say. But to get a ticket for
- 1:20:39nationals, as Dean said earlier, was $25, but then you have to
- 1:20:43buy it through Ticketmaster and Ticketmaster puts it might have
- 1:20:47even been 650 on top of the $25, which is like just extortionate
- 1:20:52ratio of handling fee for the price of the ticket.
- 1:20:56And yeah, Ticketmaster, you've got nothing.
- 1:20:59Well, I mean, they're the ones selling the tickets, but just
- 1:21:03stay out of it. You make enough money.
- 1:21:04Why are you getting involved and putting $6 on a small little
- 1:21:09athletic meet ticket, which you're probably going to sell an
- 1:21:12absolute handful of tickets for compared to like the 1800
- 1:21:16thousand seater stadiums that you'll be selling out like in
- 1:21:20probably 20 plus venues week, week in, week out around the
- 1:21:24world. So yeah, I wasn't too happy
- 1:21:26about that one, but if you learnt the trick then you could
- 1:21:30turn up to the track and buy a ticket from the box office with
- 1:21:34no handling fee. But again, you shouldn't really
- 1:21:37be having to do that because you have to jump in a queue in the
- 1:21:40in the sun. But yeah, it was a nice, nice
- 1:21:42backup. And at the end of the day, I
- 1:21:45think if you said to me now, would you have paid $32 for the
- 1:21:49ticket then? Yeah.
- 1:21:50So we'll be more than happy to do that.
- 1:21:51But if you're going in multiple days then and you're paying for
- 1:21:55multiple people, all of a sudden what should be accessible to all
- 1:21:59becomes an expensive affair. Yeah, I think you still hear me
- 1:22:01at the I. Think at the very least they
- 1:22:03could have part proceeds could maybe could have gone to like
- 1:22:06grassroots athletics or something, you know, give
- 1:22:09something back to a sport that sort of doesn't do that well
- 1:22:11financially. I think in some respects that
- 1:22:13would have been, but yeah, bit stiff, bit steep, but we'll see
- 1:22:16if I might. Provide the drama as he
- 1:22:20sometimes does. So we shall see.
- 1:22:23Relax, we do have a few listener.
- 1:22:24Come on, say again, sorry I. Say be relaxed and ready to to,
- 1:22:28to shoot from the hip. Hopefully.
- 1:22:29I think, oh, I'm sure we do. We do have a few.
- 1:22:32Listener questions because I opened it up on the Instagram I
- 1:22:35thought on earlier. So got Thomas Ted Jasks who had
- 1:22:40the best running partner for a day in Perth whilst the
- 1:22:42nationals were on within a little almost sarcastic wink
- 1:22:46because then did you see what he got up to Dean?
- 1:22:50No, I didn't. No, this is.
- 1:22:52Do tell, he managed. Maybe it was.
- 1:22:55Two, at least one room with Jess Stenson and and he got, he got a
- 1:23:00nice selfie in with her. So I'm not sure if there's an an
- 1:23:02underlying connection there where he like already knows her
- 1:23:05or if they just hooked that up. I'm not sure.
- 1:23:08But yeah, that was a good experience.
- 1:23:10Tom's a fair play. I didn't manage to get the run
- 1:23:14in with Cam Myers as we alluded to last week, but I think maybe
- 1:23:17on reflection, I thought I would leave the poor kid alone, but
- 1:23:21then yeah, world's collided. Then we ended up asking him for
- 1:23:23a selfie instead. So Josh, Ty asks, I don't know
- 1:23:30if there's any, any context or any back story to this, but I'll
- 1:23:34leave it up to if the listeners can put two and two together and
- 1:23:37they they know what the back story is, then then you know.
- 1:23:40But he asks, what are your thoughts on cannabis gummies for
- 1:23:45recovery post marathon? No comment.
- 1:23:48No comment. No, it's.
- 1:23:50I think. That's the the safe answer.
- 1:23:53It's not. It's not something I would use
- 1:23:55particularly even if I did use them, Maybe not if I was racing
- 1:24:00overseas. Adam Lamb asks.
- 1:24:03Should we normalize course maps in tight pockets for athletes
- 1:24:08who can't navigate the course themselves?
- 1:24:12I think this one might be aimed towards me.
- 1:24:16So apparently, yes, we should normalize that and maybe it's a
- 1:24:19learn for me to take from here. So yeah.
- 1:24:22So is that downloading the GPS? File so that you like can use
- 1:24:26that when you're racing. I think that's a great idea and
- 1:24:29I think maybe it should be offered in a, as part of, you
- 1:24:32know, when you, when you find their course map that you can
- 1:24:35download the Garmin GPX files. Probably a nice, a nice option
- 1:24:38because then you a lot of the, the features of Garmin or Chorus
- 1:24:42is it actually will like when we use that for the Helena Looper.
- 1:24:46I've used it first the Perth 50K is you can actually, it'll
- 1:24:49countdown how far you've got to go in your race, which is quite
- 1:24:52helpful because then you can sort of work out and you know,
- 1:24:55what pace you're on and, and what your expected finish time
- 1:24:58is. So, Oh yeah, it's a very good
- 1:25:00idea. I think that is actually.
- 1:25:03A great answer and it's also what I thought when he said it
- 1:25:06as well, but I think he is just trying to poke fun.
- 1:25:08So cheers Adam. But that is the logical
- 1:25:11response. Like it's a legit option to do
- 1:25:14that and it would avoid doing what I've done.
- 1:25:17So yeah. Chris Shaw, metronome run asks
- 1:25:22has Ryan picked up a copy of the 2025 UBD?
- 1:25:26Do you know what UBD 2025 is, Dean?
- 1:25:31I thought is it business director?
- 1:25:33I think you might be. Referring to the the the maps
- 1:25:36basically. So about directions, it's a
- 1:25:39direction book. So yeah, that might be another
- 1:25:42comment on on yesterday. I've just googled it now and
- 1:25:46says Perth. Street Directory 2025.
- 1:25:49So yeah, won't be, won't be looking into that any further.
- 1:25:53No I haven't Chris fittingly WA running pod as we allude to.
- 1:26:02Will Ryan join the Warp Rd. to Bunbury Lighthouse training
- 1:26:05series next year? Not sure if that's poking fun
- 1:26:07again or if he's being serious, but who knows.
- 1:26:12Hopefully I'll still be around to be be doing Bunbury
- 1:26:17Lighthouse next year so we'll see.
- 1:26:21Susie McMahon says top two most impressive races at nationals
- 1:26:26and what did you most enjoy? I think we've kind of covered
- 1:26:29that off. It's it's probably hard to hard
- 1:26:32to separate some of them, but I don't know.
- 1:26:33Did you have a stand out favorite?
- 1:26:35Mine are probably a bit unfair because I didn't see.
- 1:26:37All that many, but I just thought Seth's upset win and
- 1:26:40Gout Gout's 19.8, they were like like there were so many very
- 1:26:46good races. But those those are the of the
- 1:26:48few that I saw and that sort of yeah, I won't forget anytime
- 1:26:52soon. So yeah, but there was hate.
- 1:26:54I love the whole thing. Yeah, fair.
- 1:26:57I won't disagree with. You but maybe just for variety,
- 1:27:02I'll go with both the men's and the women's 1500s because I
- 1:27:05always just find them so exciting.
- 1:27:07Like they're on on for long enough to like kind of gauge
- 1:27:10your interest in a bit of a tactical affair.
- 1:27:13But they're, they're also like less than 5 minutes.
- 1:27:16So every like kind of second of it is intense and everything's
- 1:27:20on the line. So yeah, Shandy man's life.
- 1:27:23Ryan Shand, who actually posted an intriguing comment on your
- 1:27:29Strava this weekend, asks thoughts on Minister for Sports
- 1:27:36only giving medals for men's 200m so she can meet Gauth.
- 1:27:42I was not aware of that, but that is hilarious.
- 1:27:46The the name goes before the man or the boy.
- 1:27:50James W Payne asks what data fields do you use on your Garmin
- 1:27:54slash core off? It sounded like Dean just uses
- 1:27:57average pace, time and HR as bridges.
- 1:28:00Yeah, that's my. Main.
- 1:28:03That's the main one I run to. I think I have a few data
- 1:28:06screens but like that's pretty much it.
- 1:28:08Normally for me, I don't have, like, I actually don't even have
- 1:28:12a screen at the minute for total distance, which sometimes can be
- 1:28:17annoying. But yeah, no, wait, no, I think
- 1:28:20I do. Hold on.
- 1:28:21Let me check. How about you, Ryan?
- 1:28:23Yeah, usually. For a session, I just want to
- 1:28:26see my lap pace, my lap time and my heart rate.
- 1:28:33I'm just trying to think in my head if that's right, because I
- 1:28:35don't want to get called out and be like, oh, you idiot, why
- 1:28:38don't you look at that? But I think that is right.
- 1:28:40I'm only ever concerned with kind of what each interval that
- 1:28:44I'm doing right there. And then it's like don't look at
- 1:28:47the session cumulatively until afterwards.
- 1:28:51And then maybe in a race I would have total time, lap time in
- 1:28:56case I'm lapping like manually every K or every two K, every
- 1:29:015K, whatever it may be. I always want to see that what
- 1:29:05that individual split is, what I'm in there.
- 1:29:07And then, and then the total time to refer back to in a race
- 1:29:12heart rate, I think that will be it.
- 1:29:14Yeah, I've got like 2 data screens one.
- 1:29:16'S heart rate time, lap pace, that's my main one, and then the
- 1:29:21other one's lap distance, lap time, lap pace.
- 1:29:24Oh yeah, see, I knew I was missing something, obviously.
- 1:29:26Lap distance, you know, you know what you're up to.
- 1:29:30We're getting out. It's gone.
- 1:29:31Yeah, it's sometimes, I don't know, total.
- 1:29:34Distance, but I can do them. I think that's we're through the
- 1:29:38lesson of questions. So just to kind of wrap up ahead
- 1:29:41of next week, what's coming up, we've got Boston Marathon a week
- 1:29:45today, which is very exciting, but maybe in terms of Australia
- 1:29:50time, it might be a week tomorrow haven't quite looked
- 1:29:53that far ahead kind of how the time difference works would
- 1:29:56would you know when that would be the start time or let's
- 1:29:59actually have a look. No, I'm not sure off the top add
- 1:30:0315 hours. That means is it on this the
- 1:30:06start time will be between midnight and 2:00 AM the
- 1:30:09following day. So that's it's no good, Yeah,
- 1:30:12but that's off a quick Google search.
- 1:30:14So please don't take my word for it.
- 1:30:16And please do your own research. Don't want to be responsible for
- 1:30:19anyone missing the race. And then we have also the return
- 1:30:23of our the promise return and we'll look, we'll look at how
- 1:30:28the first week of a taper or slightly reduced volume and
- 1:30:31intensity looks for Dean and I as we look to bring this
- 1:30:35marathon build home. Just lastly, Dean, I did want to
- 1:30:38say not that you have to comment on this and just call.
- 1:30:40Yeah, bring on the taper that we.
- 1:30:43Have to. We've got a few listeners in the
- 1:30:46US amongst other countries, but the US intrigues me because I
- 1:30:49literally don't think I know I know anyone in the US.
- 1:30:53So if you are listening to a country from a country, see that
- 1:30:56it's not Australia, the UK or Ireland, then please reach out
- 1:31:01and let us know because I'd love to get the back story on how how
- 1:31:06the pods came across your feed. But yeah, please continue to
- 1:31:10engage with us on Instagram. We love all the comments and the
- 1:31:13messages and getting involved with everyone.
- 1:31:15And then yeah, give us a rating if you're enjoying it.
- 1:31:19Thanks guys. See you next week, Dino.
- 1:31:21See you mate. I'll be training.
