Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press Play, where we're going through the less
- 0:02Speaker 1: than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman
- 0:05Speaker 1: and with me is my beep cheek bro Jason Winn. Now,
- 0:08Speaker 1: whether you're watching or playing, it's time to press play.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hello, my bro, Hello, Oh man.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I I think okay. I think there's no mystery between
- 0:26Speaker 1: the two of us, but I think we're both very
- 0:27Speaker 1: excited for this episode.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, man, are you?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Are you?
- 0:34Speaker 1: Oh?
- 0:35Speaker 3: My god?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Combat like again, it's the one like this is.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I honestly think when I pitched the show, when I
- 0:41Speaker 1: thought of, like, oh, watching all the video game movies,
- 0:44Speaker 1: this was the one where I was like, Okay, but
- 0:46Speaker 1: at least I know we have this one in the
- 0:48Speaker 1: first few and it will be good.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah. This is a This is a surprising like Beacon
- 0:53Speaker 2: of Light. I know, because it's not I don't. I
- 0:58Speaker 2: don't think back on Mortal kombank Go, that's a sick movie.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But in the context of these movies, it's a it's
- 1:03Speaker 2: a dope movie. It's I love just.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I can't do it as well.
- 1:13Speaker 2: It's the most it's the most iconic thing. I feel
- 1:15Speaker 2: like having a sunny d in a fucking Warhead, you know, like.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I shit you not. I had Sunny D and Warheads
- 1:22Speaker 1: while watching this movie. I'm not even kidding crazy. We
- 1:25Speaker 1: literally had like it was one of those random like
- 1:27Speaker 1: there was just candies left over from like a gift package.
- 1:29Speaker 1: To some point my wife didn't want it was the Warheads.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And then that same day at worker coworker was like,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I bought red Sunny D and I didn't like it.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Do you want it? I'm like, oh, bring it home
- 1:37Speaker 1: and I'll have it while I watch a movie tonight.
- 1:40Speaker 2: That is that is weird, absolutely insancond I literally wrote this,
- 1:43Speaker 2: yeah on my notes on Saturday after you had watched
- 1:46Speaker 2: the movie, So this cannot be planned. But good god,
- 1:50Speaker 2: this this movie. Yeah, it's I think if even if
- 1:53Speaker 2: you don't, even if you're not a fan of the
- 1:55Speaker 2: Mortal Kombat series or are not related to it in
- 1:57Speaker 2: any way, shape or form, if you've seen this movie once,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you're like, god, damn, this movie's cracked out on nineties.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, this movie is like so nineties and at the
- 2:07Speaker 1: same time it like it knows what it is like. Again,
- 2:10Speaker 1: we are covering ghost movies today and there will be
- 2:12Speaker 1: some contrasting apparentives to be made. But generally, like you,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you do not watch this movie and go I wonder
- 2:20Speaker 1: what the game is like the way you might do
- 2:21Speaker 1: with well, the way you legally would have to with
- 2:24Speaker 1: the past three movies. This one you watch and go, oh,
- 2:27Speaker 1: it's a bunch of dudes beating the shit of each other,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and some of them are magic and some of them
- 2:32Speaker 1: are just douchebags.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Like cool, it's it puts it. It's extreme, for sure,
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's so good.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Did you just do the X under the table as
- 2:43Speaker 1: you were saying extreme?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, baby, it's extreme, it's nineties, it's chro it's exactly
- 2:50Speaker 2: all of that.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Okay, So I do have to ask I feel like
- 2:52Speaker 1: the answer I know already, But like, how familiar are
- 2:54Speaker 1: you with Mortal Kombat as a franchise, both the games
- 2:56Speaker 1: and movies, Like where does this fall in your coming
- 2:59Speaker 1: of age?
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm very familiar with Mortal Kombat. I think I mentioned
- 3:02Speaker 2: this in the previous episode on Street Fighter. But in
- 3:05Speaker 2: my household, we just had Mortal Kombat. It wasn't necessarily
- 3:09Speaker 2: something that was like, I like this better than Street Fighter.
- 3:11Speaker 2: But in my household, I grew up more Kombat. So
- 3:13Speaker 2: the combat system is something I'm very familiar with. The
- 3:16Speaker 2: characters I'm very familiar with. I got very into Injustice,
- 3:20Speaker 2: which is also made by Nethera Realm Studios. It features
- 3:24Speaker 2: characters from both universes. They crossover, so like in DLCs
- 3:27Speaker 2: of Modern games, you'll get DC characters and DLC for
- 3:31Speaker 2: the Injustice games were Mortal Kombat characters.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't know that one. Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's crossover because they have I guess the
- 3:38Speaker 2: license is shared or something of the sort. But I'm
- 3:41Speaker 2: very very familiar. Me and my brother grew up He's
- 3:44Speaker 2: like half my age, but we grew up kind of
- 3:46Speaker 2: playing each other. And if there was any multiplayer experience
- 3:50Speaker 2: that I could go back onto, it's playing fighting games,
- 3:54Speaker 2: generally speaking, Mortal Kombat.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah. I think I alluded to it last time as well,
- 3:57Speaker 1: that like I had the friend growing up who had
- 3:59Speaker 1: the sega, so like going to his plays after school
- 4:02Speaker 1: for Mortal Kombat was like a very regular occurrence. I
- 4:06Speaker 1: think I was the cliche kid. I loved playing Scorpion.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I loved when I finally learned how to use that.
- 4:11Speaker 1: As soon as you learned how to do that, and
- 4:13Speaker 1: like no one figured out that it was like you
- 4:15Speaker 1: easy to dodge or just like get away from.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Were just like, no one wanted to play with you.
- 4:20Speaker 1: For a couple of days.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You're just crouch kicking. Oh god, really hard. You're just
- 4:27Speaker 2: spamming the crouch kick, and it's very hard to block
- 4:29Speaker 2: or interact with.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I very distinct memory of my buddy figuring out. I
- 4:34Speaker 1: don't know if it was through cheat codes or actual gameplay,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but he unlocked the character that was just like the
- 4:38Speaker 1: human with no skin meat. I think it was a
- 4:41Speaker 1: Mortal Kombat too. He was literally just like skeleton and muscle.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I think he was just a copy paste of another
- 4:47Speaker 1: character with a new skin ironically lack thereof. I have
- 4:51Speaker 1: to look him up again, but I remember him getting
- 4:53Speaker 1: that and like the as he walks, his blood splurts
- 4:55Speaker 1: because there's no skin, and we were just like, this
- 4:57Speaker 1: is the coolest shit ever.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The mo and the games are so unapologetically themselves, right
- 5:03Speaker 2: it was We're gonna get into it in a bit here,
- 5:06Speaker 2: but they're controversial. But at the same time, because we
- 5:10Speaker 2: grew up with that and now we're adults, we look
- 5:13Speaker 2: back on that and it's like, but that's that. That
- 5:15Speaker 2: was the vibe that was their flavor that they're going for,
- 5:17Speaker 2: And there's a I'm gonna say it again, I'm sorry,
- 5:19Speaker 2: there's a charm to being just blood and gore for
- 5:23Speaker 2: for the sakes of blood and gore.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I don't think we are really going to like dabble
- 5:28Speaker 1: in this much. But like this is kind of like
- 5:30Speaker 1: one of those big, you know, like famous video game
- 5:33Speaker 1: like history moments of like a game that was so
- 5:36Speaker 1: violent it actually caused outrage among parents and things. And
- 5:39Speaker 1: it's like, yes, I get it, Like I'm a big
- 5:41Speaker 1: advocate for like, watch what your kids play. Don't just
- 5:44Speaker 1: give them grand Theft auto the age of four and
- 5:46Speaker 1: say go have fun, Timmy, don't become a psycho, Like sure,
- 5:49Speaker 1: play with your kids. Understand that if they're seeing something graphic,
- 5:53Speaker 1: like maybe it's too much for them, or let's contextualize
- 5:56Speaker 1: it and make this a learning moment. Yeah. Basically my
- 5:59Speaker 1: summary of as being, hey, parents, play games with your kids.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Don't be Dick's.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 1: But again, like this game was the the poster child
- 6:07Speaker 1: of like, ooh, video games bad for a long time.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I let my brother play really just because I don't know.
- 6:14Speaker 2: It feels like a cartoon because it is and that's it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: As long as you can textualize like this is make
- 6:18Speaker 1: believe funny, ha silly, then like you can get away
- 6:21Speaker 1: with it.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I don't think. I don't think many kids want play
- 6:26Speaker 2: mortal comment and go yeah, I'm definitely gonna rip the spider.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And honestly, if your little brother riped some dudes spine
- 6:31Speaker 1: out at school for bullying him, I would be a
- 6:34Speaker 1: little impressed. That's that takes some skill. That is not easy.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Dude, your brother Ice slid into the Benden Ice clone
- 6:42Speaker 2: then corner juggled him. That's crazy, honestly flawless.
- 6:51Speaker 1: We were gonna get one of those eventually. Okay, so
- 6:53Speaker 1: obviously the games, But how where do you follow with
- 6:56Speaker 1: the movie.
- 6:56Speaker 2: This is the first movie I've watched chronologically speak, this
- 7:00Speaker 2: is the first uh not the first movie ever I watched,
- 7:03Speaker 2: but in this series, this is the first movies I've watched.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I think they were just on TV. I think maybe
- 7:09Speaker 2: I was more of age, but they just replayed and
- 7:12Speaker 2: I just remember I've I melded the two for for
- 7:15Speaker 2: a very long time as well.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Same so so my father was a big action movie
- 7:20Speaker 1: guy like he and I didn't like bond Over film
- 7:23Speaker 1: a lot, but like the rare time there was like
- 7:25Speaker 1: just like what we call like popcorn dumb action movie,
- 7:28Speaker 1: which is kind of does fit in a little bit.
- 7:31Speaker 1: This is the kind of shit. He'd be like, let's
- 7:32Speaker 1: just watch this because I could tolerate it while you
- 7:34Speaker 1: enjoy it, and I for some reason, again, I'm like you,
- 7:39Speaker 1: I conflated the two, like I had so many fond
- 7:42Speaker 1: memories of the pair of them, and then looking back,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, all of my like the scenes I
- 7:48Speaker 1: remember liking the most are mostly from the second film,
- 7:51Speaker 1: but I way prefer the first movie, and I think
- 7:53Speaker 1: it's as we watched the second one more often.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I definitely prefer one movie over the other. And it
- 8:00Speaker 1: doesn't clear very soon, we'll figure it out, but like
- 8:04Speaker 1: one of them, it's like, oh, this is the one
- 8:05Speaker 1: I like less, but I have more scenes I'm met
- 8:07Speaker 1: fond of got It. Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I think for people who haven't seen these
- 8:11Speaker 2: movies for a while, and I don't know why you
- 8:13Speaker 2: would have watched them recently, we're gonna get into them
- 8:16Speaker 2: and we're gonna if we're gonna take you right down
- 8:18Speaker 2: memory lane and we're gonna see do these hold up?
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah? So why don't we start with a little recap
- 8:22Speaker 1: of the film In the game for the film, This
- 8:25Speaker 1: film follows a group of heroes Luke Kang, Sonya Blade,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and Johnny Cage who participate in a tournament to protect
- 8:31Speaker 1: Earth Realm from being conquered by the malevolent forces of
- 8:34Speaker 1: out World and the soul stealing Shanksung, who is incredibly
- 8:37Speaker 1: good looking at this movie holy crap. With guidance her
- 8:40Speaker 1: master Radin, a God of Thunder, the three face many foes,
- 8:43Speaker 1: most with supernatural powers, to try to become the alternate
- 8:46Speaker 1: victors in the titular Mortal Kombat and save the world.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Pretty tight synopsis, Yeah, pretty good. No mustnow fuss exactly.
- 8:54Speaker 2: We're gonna make the comparison to Street Fighter eventually, and
- 8:57Speaker 2: this one doesn't fuck around. It is they fight people.
- 9:01Speaker 2: The fighting has a beginning, a middle, and end, and
- 9:04Speaker 2: the end of the tournament someone wins the end. We
- 9:07Speaker 2: took the tournament and made it a movie and didn't
- 9:09Speaker 2: need to bullshit, but true, I missed my Southeast Asian
- 9:13Speaker 2: conflicts geopolitical conflicts mixed with it's my media correct or
- 9:18Speaker 2: not or whatever happened to it. I forgot honestly, Yeah,
- 9:20Speaker 2: we can forget about it.
- 9:21Speaker 1: We're good, we recorded it, We're done.
- 9:23Speaker 2: What good for memory? One of those men in black?
- 9:28Speaker 2: What's a street fighter?
- 9:29Speaker 1: What do you do? What do you want to tell
- 9:31Speaker 1: us about the game? Are we? Are? We close? Now?
- 9:33Speaker 2: We've all had like in the past, all these video
- 9:36Speaker 2: games have been like first, Mortal Kombat was released in
- 9:38Speaker 2: nineteen ninety two by Midway Games.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:41Speaker 2: It started development as a four person American team and
- 9:44Speaker 2: then broke onto the scene. It had colorful ninjas, it
- 9:48Speaker 2: had ground breaking graphics, It had most controversially blood and gore.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Now that being said, Midway Games has turned into noother
- 9:57Speaker 2: realm studios. They're still making Mortal Kombat games to this day,
- 10:00Speaker 2: of course, and actually passed its predecessors in worldwide lifetime sales.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But Mortal Kombat has left in its wake a legacy
- 10:09Speaker 2: of censorship, lawsuits, straight up bands from country. You can't
- 10:13Speaker 2: straight up place some of these games in certain countries
- 10:16Speaker 2: because you're just so sick, all right. Mortal Kombat is
- 10:20Speaker 2: nineties extreme attitude. To this day, you sucked if you
- 10:24Speaker 2: had the nes censored version. Ultimately, it didn't do anything different.
- 10:29Speaker 2: It was just it just came in as the bad boy. Yeah,
- 10:32Speaker 2: what do we love in the nineties, we loved a
- 10:33Speaker 2: bad boy.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I mean it's literally like what Sega tried to do
- 10:36Speaker 1: with Sonic. They were like, how do we make Mario
- 10:38Speaker 1: but the bad boy? And we got Sonic and then
- 10:41Speaker 1: Mortal Kombat said, here hold my vial of blood and
- 10:44Speaker 1: watch what we can do.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's is that true? Sonic was like the
- 10:49Speaker 2: bad Oh.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Sonic was meant to be like the edgy attitude,
- 10:52Speaker 1: like counterpoint to Mario. That was that was how he
- 10:55Speaker 1: was pitched.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Shadow pisses himself in the face of horror.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Shadow would be the ultimate DLC character for Mortal Combat. Okay,
- 11:05Speaker 1: just he just gats someone. Can you imagine the finisher
- 11:08Speaker 1: where he like literally does the spin ball and grinds
- 11:10Speaker 1: someone into dust?
- 11:13Speaker 2: So cool?
- 11:14Speaker 1: Oh my god. They are a game like I only
- 11:16Speaker 1: have played a lot of the recent ones, but like
- 11:19Speaker 1: I I will not lie to you. Whenever a new
- 11:21Speaker 1: one comes out, I will find a YouTube compilation of
- 11:23Speaker 1: all the finishers, just because I want to see what
- 11:26Speaker 1: ridiculous bullshit they can do.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I do know the story a lot because I have
- 11:31Speaker 2: played a lot of these games. It's nonsensical, it's ridiculous.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think I've like, like are down to
- 11:37Speaker 1: like third Universal reboot, but sometimes remember the previous versions.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yes, because instead of saying, hey, we're just gonna go
- 11:44Speaker 2: to clean Slate, it's all time travel nonsense, alternate timelines.
- 11:49Speaker 2: It's ridiculous. It's it's it's never stopped being itself, and
- 11:53Speaker 2: I love it. It's like your six year old uncle
- 11:57Speaker 2: who just doesn't have a shit together, and you're like, really,
- 12:00Speaker 2: like not at this point, you're not fucking whatever. You're cool,
- 12:03Speaker 2: but you're still like the fun uncle, So like we'll
- 12:05Speaker 2: let it slide. Yeah, my fun uncle. He like puts
- 12:08Speaker 2: out his cigarette in his coffee and then drinks with
- 12:11Speaker 2: Jamison in it, and you're like, I mean, you're cool,
- 12:14Speaker 2: You're cool. It's like I don't want to be don't
- 12:17Speaker 2: want to be around you. Yeah, exactly.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Okay. I think if we jump into these movies, we
- 12:21Speaker 1: just need to start with like the most important part
- 12:23Speaker 1: of this entire franchise, and it's that fucking song dude,
- 12:27Speaker 1: Oh you.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Mean this one? It comes on, Oh my god, if
- 12:38Speaker 2: you feel alive, you feel great. It's it's mixed the mixing.
- 12:43Speaker 2: I will never complain about the mixing because the song
- 12:45Speaker 2: goes at eleven oh my god.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and like again like the using the sounds from
- 12:49Speaker 1: the game, all the character names and like to finish
- 12:51Speaker 1: him like they get it in there. I would argue
- 12:54Speaker 1: that like kind of in the same way where you
- 12:56Speaker 1: can pull anyone off the street and be like do
- 12:59Speaker 1: you know who this is with a picture of Mario
- 13:00Speaker 1: and they'd be like, yeah, it's Mario, Like it's not
- 13:01Speaker 1: am I was born yesterday. You could play this song
- 13:05Speaker 1: no lyric, none of the lyrical lines, and like a
- 13:08Speaker 1: good portion will go it's from Mortal Kombat. Like it's
- 13:11Speaker 1: just like I know that culturally yes, yeah, and no
- 13:14Speaker 1: one would say that like flat. They'd be like, is
- 13:16Speaker 1: that is that Mortal Kombat?
- 13:18Speaker 2: Now you play that song, they're bopping their head.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You're either gonna get like the random dude who's like
- 13:25Speaker 1: it's a Mortal Kombat game, or you're gonna get like
- 13:27Speaker 1: the people who start like air guitaring, rocking out the
- 13:29Speaker 1: headbanging to it.
- 13:29Speaker 2: But there's no middle ground.
- 13:32Speaker 1: This is not this is not us pitching doing this
- 13:34Speaker 1: as an experiment, but I might do that now to
- 13:36Speaker 1: be a microphone, a camera at a street corner. It
- 13:40Speaker 1: sets the tone of the film so immediately, Like I
- 13:43Speaker 1: think compared to our last few movies, especially where like
- 13:47Speaker 1: there was this like Okay, we need to like build
- 13:49Speaker 1: the world, we need to introduce things. We have to
- 13:53Speaker 1: assume no one knows what's going on. They were just like, no,
- 13:56Speaker 1: people know what Mortal Kombat is. Here's the song, here's
- 14:00Speaker 1: I'm fucking kick ass fighting. We're into it.
- 14:05Speaker 2: They just said, people know they know this song before,
- 14:08Speaker 2: they've ever heard it in their life.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Hey, no, this is awesome, true, like somehow, like I
- 14:13Speaker 1: don't even know. Was this the first time the song
- 14:15Speaker 1: was made for this movie or did it exist before?
- 14:18Speaker 2: No, it's true. Are you telling me that they just
- 14:20Speaker 2: had this bop ready to go? No, it's got to
- 14:23Speaker 2: the movie. Well, you were like, was it used for trailers?
- 14:26Speaker 2: Was it used for like other things like within the
- 14:28Speaker 2: announcements maybe like an E three or like was that
- 14:31Speaker 2: too early for three? I'm aging myself here, Yeah anymore.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I don't know, But I love the idea that it's
- 14:37Speaker 2: a passion project. Someone just went this is the song
- 14:39Speaker 2: that goes to this video game. But I absolutely agree
- 14:41Speaker 2: with you. Tone wise, like this movie is immediately different.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And I had it in my notes where I was like,
- 14:48Speaker 2: you know, tone wise, this feels like a Blade, this
- 14:51Speaker 2: feels like an Underworld, it feels like like a Freddie Crewer.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And I looked it up. It's by New Line Cinema,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and New Line Cinema did most of those movies. Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 2: I was gonna say, there's someone.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I was looking at a lot of the castings, a
- 15:04Speaker 1: lot of these actors like I didn't recognize or remember,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and there was some connection to Blade, like someone plays
- 15:09Speaker 1: like one of the major vampires.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Ooh, that's cool. I did not. There's there's some fun
- 15:13Speaker 2: cast facts later I got for you. Yeah. Yeah, as
- 15:17Speaker 2: we go along in these movies, I think the I thinks,
- 15:19Speaker 2: thus far these movies have not treated themselves seriously. This
- 15:24Speaker 2: is the first what I would say, like this movie
- 15:26Speaker 2: is quote unquote for adults, or this movie is for
- 15:28Speaker 2: like older teens. I guess is what I'm trying to say.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And I don't want to be one of those guys
- 15:33Speaker 2: that's like, oh, make make Marvel Mike Star Wars for adults,
- 15:36Speaker 2: not for kids. I mean, this is a kid's property.
- 15:39Speaker 2: But I think there's something. There is something to the
- 15:41Speaker 2: idea that it's taking itself seriously. They're not saying this
- 15:44Speaker 2: is stupid. Let's let's add in a gumba. Let's add
- 15:47Speaker 2: in a in a bobo from from whatever that we
- 15:51Speaker 2: did was right, Like they take the ideas if we're
- 15:54Speaker 2: going to do colorful ninjas, we are going to do
- 15:56Speaker 2: colorful ninjas. It's gonna be camping that way. But we're
- 15:58Speaker 2: not gonna be like, look at this dumb colorful ninja,
- 16:01Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, yeah, he might be a dude wearing
- 16:04Speaker 1: all yellow. Well, let's immediately show off that he can
- 16:06Speaker 1: summon like weird chain creatures from his hands, and then
- 16:09Speaker 1: later reveal he's just a fucking skeleton. You can breathe fire. Yeah,
- 16:14Speaker 1: he might look campy, but we're not gonna play into
- 16:17Speaker 1: the silliness at all. We're gonna be serious, which I
- 16:20Speaker 1: think does such such merit for this film. Yes, there
- 16:24Speaker 1: was something else I noticed really early on, and it's
- 16:27Speaker 1: in that first scene where it's at Shang Sung with uh,
- 16:29Speaker 1: we'll lose brother, the dream where he reis his brother
- 16:33Speaker 1: gets killed. The sky looks so weird, and it bugged
- 16:37Speaker 1: me for a while, the sky was like it like
- 16:39Speaker 1: they had a weird filter on it, but it was
- 16:41Speaker 1: like designed to only affect the sky, not the buildings,
- 16:43Speaker 1: so you can like almost clearly see the cutout lines
- 16:46Speaker 1: of like where the effect ends and starts. Yes, and
- 16:48Speaker 1: then it occurred to me, I think they were doing
- 16:51Speaker 1: this on purpose, to make it look more like video
- 16:54Speaker 1: game graphics.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Do you okay, well, do you think that? Do you
- 16:58Speaker 2: think they did it intentionally? Because it happens a lot.
- 17:03Speaker 2: We're like, the sky doesn't need to be changed, but
- 17:06Speaker 2: they've changed it for some reason, and it starts to wonder,
- 17:10Speaker 2: like why do they keep doing it at times where
- 17:13Speaker 2: they don't need to do it? I see you, we're saying,
- 17:15Speaker 2: and it's like, I don't think it's I don't think
- 17:18Speaker 2: the the cheapness of it is untentional, but I think
- 17:20Speaker 2: the changing the sky to kind of match the vibe
- 17:23Speaker 2: of the games like backgrounds I see because again, a
- 17:26Speaker 2: lot of the game footage for Mortal Kombat, like even
- 17:29Speaker 2: the the characters in the earliest games were I can
- 17:32Speaker 2: remember the term they used for, but essentially we're like
- 17:34Speaker 2: actual photos and then translated into sprites. Yes, absolutely, I
- 17:39Speaker 2: think they.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Were kind of trying to get that effect of like
- 17:41Speaker 1: it's a real background but in a video game, but
- 17:44Speaker 1: in a movie.
- 17:45Speaker 2: So I might making up a lot a lot of
- 17:50Speaker 2: leeway out of your gang.
- 17:52Speaker 1: That's it. Whether I'm right or wrong, this is something
- 17:54Speaker 1: I've learned from past experience stutting media. I'm just gonna
- 17:57Speaker 1: give them the blanket kudos for this one, and if
- 17:59Speaker 1: I'm wrong, they can come and tell me.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I liked I like. I like it a lot. I do.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It's a great theory. This movie has great sets. It
- 18:06Speaker 2: looks like a lot of it is filmed on location,
- 18:08Speaker 2: so why do you need to change it? You're absolutely
- 18:10Speaker 2: valid on that. I mean, we watch movies now and
- 18:13Speaker 2: they're they're filmed in the the bubble whatever they call it,
- 18:17Speaker 2: the green.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Room screen multi media model.
- 18:21Speaker 2: The thing that yeah, Star Wars nerds, if you watch
- 18:23Speaker 2: The Man, you know, nothing's on. Everything's done in a
- 18:27Speaker 2: goddamn closet nowadays. Uh So, Ironically, while the graphics are
- 18:32Speaker 2: piss poor, this movie does look better than a lot
- 18:34Speaker 2: of movies today, at least the kind of blockbuster adaptation stuff.
- 18:39Speaker 2: So I think giving them the benefit of though is good.
- 18:42Speaker 2: I wouldn't go that far, but I like the theory.
- 18:45Speaker 2: I like the theory all lot.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, just whole like, let's not waste time.
- 18:49Speaker 1: It starts with our villain immediately doing villain shit and
- 18:53Speaker 1: killing a child, like it's just it's one hundred percent go,
- 18:56Speaker 1: and we get Shang Sung, who is like just a
- 18:59Speaker 1: brilliant villain. Like I'm just gonna say, now, look again
- 19:01Speaker 1: our first comparison point. What a great villain it. It's
- 19:05Speaker 1: so good. It doesn't disservice to the next movie where
- 19:07Speaker 1: the villains and shit.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Absolutely like the best villain we've had, Yeah, Carrie Hiroyuki
- 19:14Speaker 2: Tagawa is the guy. He's fantastic because he both plays
- 19:18Speaker 2: this sorcerer who's maniacal and like the ultimate evil, but
- 19:22Speaker 2: he doesn't play that the whole time, like he's very subtle.
- 19:26Speaker 2: He's very dastardly in a chill, calm way. He's so good.
- 19:32Speaker 2: He plays the character in modern games. In Mortal Kombat one,
- 19:36Speaker 2: they use him for the basis of his face and
- 19:40Speaker 2: his motion capture and his voice and all that other stuff.
- 19:42Speaker 2: So he's so iconic to the series that it's come
- 19:45Speaker 2: full circle, which we fucking love, right, Like adaptation of
- 19:49Speaker 2: the character back into video games.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Like, we'll definitely hit on this a few times, but
- 19:54Speaker 1: like the creators of the game were heavily involved really
- 19:57Speaker 1: in the first movie. Ah, and like they said like too,
- 20:01Speaker 1: like they they were there for the casting and you know,
- 20:04Speaker 1: Carrie Harry, he came in and they were like, he's
- 20:06Speaker 1: a little old and we wanted for the character. And
- 20:08Speaker 1: then allegedly I have this in the note somewhere else,
- 20:10Speaker 1: but like he came in, got out a chair, stood
- 20:14Speaker 1: on the chair, and delivered his entire audition from the
- 20:16Speaker 1: top of a chair so he'd be bigger and imposing.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And they basically just said, like, yeah, that's him. We're
- 20:22Speaker 1: gonna retcon the fucking games so that this is what
- 20:25Speaker 1: he looks like now. Like even though he was supposed
- 20:27Speaker 1: to be a much younger character in the initial games.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Oh that's fascinating. I always thought he was going to
- 20:31Speaker 2: be an old because like in some of the games,
- 20:33Speaker 2: he's just an old guy.
- 20:34Speaker 1: No, I don't think he's in Mortal Kombat one. I
- 20:37Speaker 1: think they only introduceed him Immortal Kombat too, but they'd
- 20:39Speaker 1: already started him as a younger guy. And I don't
- 20:41Speaker 1: know if it was only post two that they did
- 20:43Speaker 1: it or if they changed it in time for two,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I'd have to look into that. But like he was
- 20:47Speaker 1: he was Basically they said like, eh, well let him audition,
- 20:49Speaker 1: but like he's too old for the role. And then
- 20:52Speaker 1: they went never mind foot in mouth.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Because he's both fantastic in it but also athletic as hell.
- 20:59Speaker 2: The guys. To use a term I think you've used
- 21:02Speaker 2: before on this podcast, he's tight.
- 21:04Speaker 1: He is tight. Yes, even as Drip too is. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: would fit Like again, o't what it is every one
- 21:10Speaker 1: of these movies that come away being like I want
- 21:11Speaker 1: to steal that guy's jacket, like I am the dude
- 21:13Speaker 1: where like if I were on set of there's filming,
- 21:16Speaker 1: I would have fucking stolen that jacket.
- 21:19Speaker 2: As jacket just walk off on stage with it, just with.
- 21:23Speaker 1: This jacket under my clothes. Just sure you're looking bulkier
- 21:28Speaker 1: and jacketier than normal.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Shut up, No, it's so good, Uh, Drip, let's talk
- 21:34Speaker 2: about let's talk about the drippiest guy, Johnny Cage. Oh
- 21:39Speaker 2: my god, iconic, iconic character.
- 21:42Speaker 1: He is the ultimate fish out of water in this franchise.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Like I love the fact that he is actually a
- 21:47Speaker 1: trained martial artist like it's not just like he's a
- 21:49Speaker 1: movie actor who happens to do stule, It's like he's
- 21:51Speaker 1: actually Yeah, so there's like there's there's characterization, there's there's
- 21:56Speaker 1: like logic to it, like he's the character of Johnny
- 21:59Speaker 1: Cage fits the universe. But it's like the combination of
- 22:03Speaker 1: like you are so like like Luke King at least
- 22:06Speaker 1: being like a martial artist who's part of a group
- 22:08Speaker 1: that like might actually be like relevant to this tournament.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Sonia Blade has the you know, I'm hunting this one
- 22:14Speaker 1: dude who's part of this evil organization, so.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I have a connection to all this.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Johnny Cage is just I'm a really good fighter and
- 22:21Speaker 1: I should probably fight in this tournament cause I'm really
- 22:23Speaker 1: good at fighting, and then doesn't question anything, like he's like,
- 22:28Speaker 1: oh evil dude, can breathe fire you, I'll fight him.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Like excuse me, dude. It's for the exposure. It's good
- 22:35Speaker 1: for my career. It's all they paid him an exposure.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, man, he's you know, he's great. I realized that
- 22:41Speaker 2: he has han solo energy, which is probably what the
- 22:43Speaker 2: previous movies needed. Was that, Yeah, he he does question
- 22:47Speaker 2: some things where he's like, dude, all right, so you
- 22:48Speaker 2: fought that guy, you fought this guy. What are we
- 22:50Speaker 2: doing here? Man? What's going on? He often does that.
- 22:53Speaker 2: The other great thing about the things that you just
- 22:56Speaker 2: said is having real martial artists, not only in story,
- 23:00Speaker 2: but in this film itself. Something I heard maybe you
- 23:03Speaker 2: can clarify because you do the trivia section as well,
- 23:06Speaker 2: is that the director of this Paul W. S. Anderson
- 23:10Speaker 2: I believe is his name. He does the Resident Evil movies.
- 23:13Speaker 1: He does.
- 23:13Speaker 2: He wanted to do Hong Kong action, but he felt
- 23:18Speaker 2: arrogantly that Hong Kong action was missing Western storytelling, so
- 23:23Speaker 2: they thought they would improve on Hong Kong action in
- 23:27Speaker 2: the nineties by doing this film. Now, while I'm not
- 23:30Speaker 2: gonna say that it's better than Hong Kong action movies
- 23:33Speaker 2: of the time, I think this movie's action is fucking stellar,
- 23:37Speaker 2: especially compared to all the kung fu karate shit that
- 23:39Speaker 2: we've been watching as of late.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Like this is one of those things where it's like,
- 23:43Speaker 1: while I've been very forgiving of the past movies action
- 23:46Speaker 1: because it's like it's fun, it's like it's combat for
- 23:49Speaker 1: combat's sake, just to move the story along and it's
- 23:51Speaker 1: like not like it's a step up from like clearly
- 23:55Speaker 1: being camp to like just being like, Okay, this actually
- 23:59Speaker 1: has like proper choreo, well done fight scenes, like yes,
- 24:04Speaker 1: let's let's the shot run.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You know, like we get to see all of it
- 24:08Speaker 2: for some bits.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Apparently the director Paul ws Anderson was very big on
- 24:13Speaker 1: like wide shots that see the whole scene, yeah, which
- 24:16Speaker 1: meant you couldn't cut as much, which meant everyone was
- 24:18Speaker 1: getting a lot more exhausted. And it was actually Robin Chu,
- 24:22Speaker 1: who plays Luke Kang, the kind of approached him like
- 24:24Speaker 1: being like, with experience doing these kind of like Kung
- 24:27Speaker 1: Fu movies, you gotta do a lot closer shots so
- 24:29Speaker 1: you can cut more so we can take some breaths
- 24:31Speaker 1: in between. So like there are still some of these
- 24:34Speaker 1: really big wide shots that like kind of like really
- 24:37Speaker 1: do a nice job of like setting the scene and
- 24:39Speaker 1: showing the scope of the battles, but then you kind
- 24:42Speaker 1: of cut into the smaller shots. You gotta get the
- 24:44Speaker 1: best of both worlds. And I think it is wonderfully
- 24:46Speaker 1: like accidentally happened one hundred percent. No, I absolutely agree
- 24:49Speaker 1: with you, Robin Chou. If we could talk about him
- 24:52Speaker 1: for a sec embodies his character. He's sick, he's awesome.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I think you can see that it's him during those
- 24:57Speaker 2: He's also a proper martial artist. He's probably the best
- 25:00Speaker 2: martial artists. There's a later scene that I that I
- 25:02Speaker 2: shout him and Francois Petite, who plays sub zero fun
- 25:07Speaker 2: fact about him, he's he's a little Frankie. I don't
- 25:11Speaker 2: know anything about French.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I mean that is what it means.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Is that not what that means?
- 25:18Speaker 1: Got it?
- 25:19Speaker 2: But yeah, their fight is amazing. It's very cheesy, but god,
- 25:22Speaker 2: he is he's he's tight. That's you say, he's vascular
- 25:26Speaker 2: as hell.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Oh he is fucking built like a oh gorgeous man, gorgeous,
- 25:32Speaker 1: gorgeous human being.
- 25:34Speaker 2: He's such a good lou king if you're getting to
- 25:37Speaker 2: like a Bruce Lee quote unquote knockoff Robin Chu does
- 25:40Speaker 2: it and even better in some ways, you know, he
- 25:43Speaker 2: is Lou Kang like he's embodying this guy.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is one of those cases of
- 25:47Speaker 1: like you you found the perfect actor for this role,
- 25:49Speaker 1: Like I feel like and again we'll dig into a
- 25:52Speaker 1: little bit, like with the second film, the casting that happens,
- 25:56Speaker 1: but like had they replaced lu Kang, I don't think
- 25:59Speaker 1: you would have been able to make them one hundred
- 26:00Speaker 1: percent agree you would be like you would have had
- 26:03Speaker 1: to be like, oh, he died and a new character
- 26:05Speaker 1: came in, Like we can't recast lu King. We are
- 26:08Speaker 1: just the start of this movie. Like it's thirty seconds
- 26:10Speaker 1: of backstory. We get everything we need to get and
- 26:13Speaker 1: we were just into it and we now just sort
- 26:15Speaker 1: of get these like little vignette moments of each character,
- 26:18Speaker 1: so we kind of get like which kind of just
- 26:20Speaker 1: like they're like, here's a quick like who you are,
- 26:22Speaker 1: what you do, and how you're getting.
- 26:23Speaker 2: To the tournament.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yeah, with the exception of the the other boxer or
- 26:28Speaker 1: wrestler dude who whose name I'm forgetting, who basically gets
- 26:32Speaker 1: like two lines on the boat and then dies later.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I watched this movie with my own eyeballs. I saw
- 26:38Speaker 2: your notes about this guy because he dies and everyone's
- 26:42Speaker 2: like God, no.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry, Art, that's the same. I was just like,
- 26:47Speaker 1: look at I need him, Like the actor does even
- 26:50Speaker 1: have a photo, and I need to be this how
- 26:51Speaker 1: little he's done, like not an offendo, but just saying
- 26:53Speaker 1: like he's not like a well known actor.
- 26:55Speaker 2: One hundred percent. No, Yeah, his name is Art. You
- 26:58Speaker 2: made a note about it. And when I watched this
- 27:00Speaker 2: and I went, did we see this guy before? Who
- 27:02Speaker 2: the fuck is this guy?
- 27:05Speaker 1: He he's there on the on the boardwalk getting on
- 27:08Speaker 1: the boat talking to Johnny. When Lou throws his bags.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Overboard, I just assumed that was Lou when I was
- 27:15Speaker 2: watching with my own eyeballs.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so we've literally got like one interaction where he
- 27:20Speaker 1: watches Lou Kank throw luggage in the ocean, and then
- 27:23Speaker 1: Johnny Cage has in like one funny like quip.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I presume they meet each other on the boat.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Because I'm assuming this boat ride takes a little while
- 27:31Speaker 1: to get wherever they're going.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Uh.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Not like it's a fast like yacht super yacht. It's
- 27:36Speaker 1: literally an old pirate ship.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I love how no one questions there was like the
- 27:41Speaker 1: pirate ship is just to manic.
- 27:42Speaker 2: I guess his story arc is because he's an un
- 27:45Speaker 2: named well he isn't named in this movie, but he's
- 27:48Speaker 2: a Uh it'd be the equivalent of like you went
- 27:51Speaker 2: to a convention and shared an uber with a guy
- 27:54Speaker 2: and later that guy fucking died. I was like, where's
- 28:01Speaker 2: this going, Oh, they been through so much together.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Like there was a moment too where I'm like, oh,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I forgot who he was and I'm like, oh, it's
- 28:08Speaker 1: it's Sonya's partner who came with. I'm like, no, it's not.
- 28:11Speaker 1: We don't get to the next movie.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Exactly, so it's no, who is this guy?
- 28:15Speaker 1: Then? Like there's no reason anyone should be I understand
- 28:19Speaker 1: there's an emotional reaction to seeing a fellow human being
- 28:22Speaker 1: die and have their soul sucked out of them by
- 28:25Speaker 1: a hot Asian man.
- 28:27Speaker 2: But I shared at Hooper with this guy and then
- 28:37Speaker 2: his soul got sucked out by a hot Asian guy.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Feeling a lot today, it's been.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Crazy, it's been a day, and then forgot my fries
- 28:47Speaker 1: at McDonald's.
- 28:47Speaker 2: It's been a day.
- 28:49Speaker 1: But like the level of reaction feels like this, like
- 28:52Speaker 1: this was like their This was like their childhood best
- 28:54Speaker 1: friend or some shit we didn't know.
- 28:57Speaker 2: And I totally agree with you. I think I think
- 28:58Speaker 2: that's kind of the beauty of this movie. Our significance notwithstanding,
- 29:03Speaker 2: I think the movie does two good things that previous
- 29:06Speaker 2: ones have not, And it's good in a movie period.
- 29:09Speaker 2: It says that this thing that you're doing has steaks
- 29:12Speaker 2: where Edgie, we're gonna kill somebody. I don't think anyone
- 29:14Speaker 2: has died thus far, So there are steaks. You can die,
- 29:18Speaker 2: weirdly enough in a situation called Mortal Kombat. But then two,
- 29:23Speaker 2: something else that previous movies have not done and movies
- 29:26Speaker 2: should do is give your character steaks. Not only are
- 29:30Speaker 2: they thrust into this situation, but they except Johnny Cage,
- 29:33Speaker 2: but at least Sonya and Lou Kang have reasons to
- 29:36Speaker 2: be in here, right. Lu King is trying to find
- 29:39Speaker 2: out what happened to his brother and avenge him. Sonia. Actually,
- 29:44Speaker 2: I say this out loud. Sonya is doing something she
- 29:46Speaker 2: needs to.
- 29:47Speaker 1: She's looking for revenge because of what's his name Jack
- 29:53Speaker 1: killed her previous partner.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Ah. Okay, So there's stakes to be in this situation.
- 29:58Speaker 2: It's not just hey, evil guys show up. Let's beat
- 30:00Speaker 2: up evil guy. Johnny Cage's again, motivation is exposure.
- 30:04Speaker 1: But like, can we take a moment because like, yes,
- 30:06Speaker 1: that's where he starts. And while we don't really get
- 30:08Speaker 1: like a hero's journey type like plot for him, Yeah,
- 30:12Speaker 1: by the end of the movie, he's like accepted. Okay,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I've kind of stumbled into this thing. And while it's
- 30:18Speaker 1: not my like Zo like I don't need to be here,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I should just leave. He's like, wait, like there are
- 30:24Speaker 1: stakes there, there are stakes here, I'm gonna do this fight. No,
- 30:28Speaker 1: he really kind of has like a development into a Okay,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I need to be doing this for the betterment of
- 30:32Speaker 1: the world, not just for me anymore. And then like
- 30:36Speaker 1: to jump ahead a bit when we get to his
- 30:38Speaker 1: final fight with Goro, like like he he yes, a
- 30:41Speaker 1: little bit of like the I'm the man, I gotta
- 30:43Speaker 1: go fight Goro and be the hero here. But like
- 30:46Speaker 1: you've seen what Goro can do. He's not like, you know,
- 30:49Speaker 1: this isn't cocky anymore. This is like the right thing
- 30:51Speaker 1: to do type thing. Like I'm very genuinely impressed by
- 30:54Speaker 1: the evolution of his character, even though we don't see
- 30:57Speaker 1: it like in the way most movies today would do it.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Yes, it's there absolutely no one hundred percent way. If
- 31:03Speaker 2: you agree with you that that feeds more into the
- 31:05Speaker 2: Han Solo parallel. I just realized where it's like this
- 31:07Speaker 2: person who's selfish and and kind of a scoundrel and
- 31:10Speaker 2: so and so forth, but does see the significance of
- 31:13Speaker 2: what the better mint of society could do, and I
- 31:16Speaker 2: need to be a part of this, and I can't
- 31:18Speaker 2: participate in this, and it doesn't he listen, it's fine
- 31:22Speaker 2: to have side characters. He doesn't need to be the protagonist.
- 31:25Speaker 2: It's enough growth in itself because he also retains his
- 31:28Speaker 2: devil's charm. In the girl fight that you said, I
- 31:32Speaker 2: was like half watching at this point because there was
- 31:33Speaker 2: a lot of action, but I heard the line that
- 31:36Speaker 2: pair of sunglasses was five dollars, five hundred dollars, asshole,
- 31:38Speaker 2: and I was like, yeah, ever, you kick the shit
- 31:42Speaker 2: out of girl for that. That's sick.
- 31:44Speaker 1: It's just it's so he's so good. And again, even
- 31:47Speaker 1: the friendship him and lou build kind of just like
- 31:50Speaker 1: they very much become this movie's version of our bros
- 31:53Speaker 1: that every movie has had up until this point. This
- 31:56Speaker 1: is last canonical. One day, I think we'll get to
- 31:59Speaker 1: a point where you don't just have like a pair
- 32:00Speaker 1: of bros in this movie. And this one, like it
- 32:02Speaker 1: didn't feel forced like the other ones kind of did,
- 32:04Speaker 1: where it's like, well, the game has the Tube protagonists,
- 32:07Speaker 1: so we need to have the bros. Right. This was
- 32:09Speaker 1: just we kind of have two male leads, and they
- 32:12Speaker 1: get along very well, and there's no like weird competition,
- 32:16Speaker 1: there's no like differing of opinions on things. They very
- 32:19Speaker 1: much just go like, yeah, we're in this together, we
- 32:21Speaker 1: may as will be friends. Class love it. I love
- 32:25Speaker 1: this for them.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you ever get into a situation you have you
- 32:28Speaker 2: have no idea why you're there, and then you just
- 32:30Speaker 2: see another dude and you're like Star Wars, right, and
- 32:32Speaker 2: then you become best friends with thirty seconds.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Why should you not? I have this legitimately one of
- 32:39Speaker 1: my best friends now is because he started dating one
- 32:42Speaker 1: of my wife's best friends. Ah, and we were like,
- 32:44Speaker 1: you're dating a new guy and we don't know who
- 32:46Speaker 1: he is. We should go have dinner and meet this guy.
- 32:49Speaker 1: And then by the end that him and I walked
- 32:50Speaker 1: out arm in arm going okay, so Comic Con this year,
- 32:53Speaker 1: we're gonna go meet Nathan Fillion and like we literally
- 32:56Speaker 1: we bonded over like being such a big nerds and
- 32:58Speaker 1: now like we've bought in both our wives with a
- 32:59Speaker 1: huge nerdy So it's like friendship.
- 33:02Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Hey, even you and I how this show started is.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Basically just gonna say, man, you ever, like just guess
- 33:08Speaker 2: on someone else's show, and then a year and a
- 33:09Speaker 2: half later you're making your own fucking show and you
- 33:13Speaker 2: talk to each other about Pokemon all the time and
- 33:15Speaker 2: transformers like goddamn Nerds, classic dudes being bros.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Which of us is the Johnny Cage of this relationship? Uh?
- 33:24Speaker 2: Probably me?
- 33:26Speaker 1: Probably me. It's like, I don't call you the lu k.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Is that racist?
- 33:31Speaker 2: I don't think it is. But also I think I'm
- 33:32Speaker 2: more of a scoundrel. I have very single friend energy.
- 33:36Speaker 2: I think. I think I just show up with no
- 33:38Speaker 2: responsibilities and I get the fuck out.
- 33:40Speaker 1: But you were the most lynchmin person to be there
- 33:42Speaker 1: when we need you.
- 33:44Speaker 2: I die in the next movie. Oh god.
- 33:47Speaker 1: For as shitty as some of the effects are, and
- 33:48Speaker 1: I will hound on this movie, some of the effects
- 33:50Speaker 1: are absolute nightmare fuel. I e reptile. What the fuck
- 33:55Speaker 1: was that little weird freak?
- 33:56Speaker 2: Bad bad? But Goro looks amazing, looks like he's is
- 34:01Speaker 2: he claymation? Is that what he is? I don't know.
- 34:03Speaker 1: He might be. It might be a practical suit thing
- 34:05Speaker 1: I really like. I do not tell you, but it's
- 34:07Speaker 1: not digital, it's it's practical.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Whatever it is I think in your notes you also
- 34:11Speaker 2: said that it fit the vibe of this whole situation. Yes,
- 34:14Speaker 2: I one hundred percent agree, one hundred percent agree.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Yeah, there is like there's a an argument to being
- 34:19Speaker 1: made that for the age of the film, he's gonna
- 34:22Speaker 1: look the way he does because that's what they had
- 34:23Speaker 1: at their disposal. But I feel like if you were
- 34:26Speaker 1: to remake that movie today, and I know there are
- 34:28Speaker 1: some more modern versions of Mortal Kombat, which I haven't
- 34:30Speaker 1: actually seen any of, or maybe I've seen clips here
- 34:34Speaker 1: and there, but like I can't recall seeing something like
- 34:36Speaker 1: a goro in those ones. I feel like anything you
- 34:39Speaker 1: do today would feel like too clean and polished. You
- 34:42Speaker 1: would want to go back to this like kind of
- 34:44Speaker 1: like rubbery suit clay feel to it. Like that feels right.
- 34:50Speaker 2: One hundred percent agree. I mean it's it's added on
- 34:53Speaker 2: by the great voice acting of Kevin Michael Richardson is fantastic,
- 34:57Speaker 2: iconic voice. He's a great lackey, right because he's a
- 35:02Speaker 2: boss in the first game iconic, but in this being
- 35:06Speaker 2: just a lackey, he also really really adds this like
- 35:11Speaker 2: stakes of this is a huge fucking monster. There's no
- 35:14Speaker 2: way you can beat this, but we do, and we're
- 35:17Speaker 2: awesome because that's the vibe of this movie. We want
- 35:21Speaker 2: him to We want to see him crush a dude,
- 35:24Speaker 2: punch a like seventeen dudes in a rapid fire montage,
- 35:27Speaker 2: and our heroes beat him, and that's sick.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Let's just go over the point that, like, there are
- 35:33Speaker 1: fight scenes in our fighting game movie. Yes, Like we
- 35:37Speaker 1: harped on street Fighters so much that they basically teased
- 35:40Speaker 1: like three fights and then finally gave us like one
- 35:42Speaker 1: big montage of a bunch of like small fights that
- 35:45Speaker 1: was like fifteen minutes long. Yeah, yeah, it was brutal.
- 35:47Speaker 1: This we get, Okay, we have like the big ones
- 35:51Speaker 1: that are worth remembering. Cage versus Goros phenomenal, even though
- 35:54Speaker 1: it is short. It's it's the ball punch, it's the
- 35:56Speaker 1: knocking him off a ledge, it's the sunglasses line, him
- 36:00Speaker 1: versus scorpion again, destructible environments, some crazy acrobatics, the fucking skeleton,
- 36:07Speaker 1: flame breath reveal cutting him over with a with a
- 36:10Speaker 1: saw blade shield, and then to end it all with
- 36:13Speaker 1: the most iconic moment of the movie, the fucking autograph,
- 36:19Speaker 1: Like that is just you knew what you were doing.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And you did it right.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Yes again camp but not overt Like I don't know
- 36:28Speaker 2: how to necessarily explain it, where it's this perfect level
- 36:32Speaker 2: of let's because it's the video game that does it itself.
- 36:36Speaker 2: The video game itself says, isn't this silly to be
- 36:39Speaker 2: able to cut open a guy in half? Let's have
- 36:41Speaker 2: this Hollywood guy who does the splits and punches guys
- 36:44Speaker 2: in the nuts. Right, there's silliness embedded in that. And
- 36:47Speaker 2: it doesn't say that. The movie doesn't say that's dumb.
- 36:50Speaker 2: The movie says that's awesome. Yeah, that you are silly.
- 36:54Speaker 2: It's just a perfect line, a perfect line. I can't
- 36:57Speaker 2: believe I'm praising this movie that much. I feel crazy, right,
- 37:02Speaker 2: but it really it's a good movie.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Like I'm not gonna we'll get to the reviews later,
- 37:07Speaker 1: but like genuinely like I had, like I had such
- 37:10Speaker 1: a good time watching this movie.
- 37:12Speaker 2: It was a breeze. It was it was fun, It
- 37:15Speaker 2: went through its paces, Every fight was interesting and new.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I think what I was alluding to with that Street
- 37:19Speaker 2: Fighter thing was yes, we did finally get some good choreo,
- 37:23Speaker 2: but it went so long, whereas this is like different
- 37:26Speaker 2: choreo it's not the same ball punch every single time
- 37:29Speaker 2: or the same kicks message exactly. It's let's do different situations.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Let's add a little bit of They dare to do
- 37:35Speaker 2: the hoduken as well. The effects are bad, but I
- 37:38Speaker 2: will give them the benefit of the doubt where they went.
- 37:40Speaker 2: You know, Let's do the chain thing with Scorpion. Yes,
- 37:43Speaker 2: let's do it. Get over here. Let's do ice effects
- 37:45Speaker 2: with sub Zero. He's an ice ninja. Let's just not
- 37:48Speaker 2: say he's a cold guy. Let's make him a full
- 37:50Speaker 2: ice yeah ninja.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Like, let's embrace the supernatural elements. And again, great segue here,
- 37:55Speaker 1: because sub Zero's fight is phenomenal. It's a little I
- 37:59Speaker 1: find the ending of bit lackluster in the way they
- 38:01Speaker 1: do it, but like, sure, you need a way to
- 38:03Speaker 1: have like a mortal man beat a ice summoning ninja.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Katana kind of sets it up. And we haven't talked
- 38:09Speaker 1: about her much.
- 38:11Speaker 2: I don't feel like she's important to this movie. They
- 38:13Speaker 2: try to make her important.
- 38:14Speaker 1: She's important to the second movie, but in this film,
- 38:17Speaker 1: she's very much like the mcguffin character. She's just there
- 38:20Speaker 1: to be like a prize to be one almost, which
- 38:23Speaker 1: is very insulting, but it's very much outside of its times.
- 38:25Speaker 2: This movie's better than the next, but there's a lot
- 38:28Speaker 2: of misogyny in these movies because they have women who
- 38:30Speaker 2: kick butt, but the women have to kick butt in
- 38:32Speaker 2: certain contexts of their quote unquote abilities. Right, Like, does
- 38:36Speaker 2: Katana fight in this one?
- 38:39Speaker 1: Uh? There's like a scene where she fights Luke Hang
- 38:41Speaker 1: and then basically like the fight like doesn't end. She
- 38:43Speaker 1: sungs just like, no, stop giving him hints and shit,
- 38:47Speaker 1: why why he set up that fight in the first place?
- 38:49Speaker 1: Seems weird to me? Is she technically on his team?
- 38:52Speaker 1: Can she just forfeit the match and not fight, like
- 38:55Speaker 1: she clearly doesn't want to be here. Up until the
- 38:58Speaker 1: end of that sub zero fight, choreo is fantastic. The
- 39:01Speaker 1: fight feels good, the they're using the environment like they
- 39:04Speaker 1: really have what they're doing.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Yeah, the music's on full blast.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Yes, And then you also get his fight against Reptile,
- 39:12Speaker 1: which I also just want to point out. I love that,
- 39:13Speaker 1: Like Reptile shows up, attacks him, throws him into a
- 39:16Speaker 1: building while he's with Cage, and Johnny Cage is just like,
- 39:20Speaker 1: y'all watch this fight happen from the sidelines to not
- 39:22Speaker 1: get involved at all, Like, at no point do you
- 39:25Speaker 1: hear him like you need a hand or like let
- 39:27Speaker 1: me come in here and help you, Like you just
- 39:29Speaker 1: stood up there, did nothing. I'd imagine which with popcorn
- 39:32Speaker 1: watching this fight going damn, this.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Is good one on one fights only just like the
- 39:36Speaker 2: video game.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Hey, and again the second movie breaks that rule.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Oh man, oh man? Should we get into the second
- 39:44Speaker 2: movie then? Is that? Is that all we have to
- 39:45Speaker 2: say about this first one?
- 39:46Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I think we've kind of covered everything
- 39:48Speaker 1: this This movie was fantastic. The fights are amazing. Every
- 39:51Speaker 1: single fight scene feels good. The final fight feels amazing. Yeah, yeah,
- 39:55Speaker 1: they Yeah, we even get like the way they do
- 39:59Speaker 1: the the ending of like, oh we're gonna have like
- 40:02Speaker 1: a big bat for the next movie and they get
- 40:03Speaker 1: their full pose like it feels so good. Moral combat
- 40:08Speaker 1: one you you figured it out? Whooo okay. The fact
- 40:19Speaker 1: that the second movie just begins with the same, like
- 40:22Speaker 1: basically the same intro and just add the term annihilation.
- 40:26Speaker 1: You perfected the opening, no need to change it.
- 40:30Speaker 2: No, and they do it. They do a in case
- 40:33Speaker 2: you missed it, uh situation in this movie. They go
- 40:36Speaker 2: through like all our heroes did. They're like, and there
- 40:39Speaker 2: was a time of peace and then like Shao Khan
- 40:42Speaker 2: just appears out of nowhere. That's about two minutes and
- 40:44Speaker 2: thirty seconds of real time of peace. I don't I
- 40:46Speaker 2: don't know what age of peace you're talking about.
- 40:49Speaker 1: There was a moment I was like trying to feel
- 40:50Speaker 1: like how much time did pass? Like this is them
- 40:52Speaker 1: coming back to the temple of like to celebrate, but
- 40:54Speaker 1: like was it maybe like they took a few weeks
- 40:57Speaker 1: to get back there.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Maybe like nah, dude, I think they left the building
- 41:02Speaker 2: and they're like, man, this is pretty good. Maybe you know,
- 41:05Speaker 2: maybe we'll have a date or two Katana, And then
- 41:08Speaker 2: Shao Kan's face is like, hey, you had a second movie.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I mean like a media media very much what it feels.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Like, Yeah, man, this movie, dude, this movie. If the
- 41:20Speaker 2: last movie was, this movie is more like it's.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Like it's and the worst part is it because it
- 41:28Speaker 1: starts the same song they like like basically reuse the intro.
- 41:32Speaker 1: But I think that's the right thing to do of
- 41:33Speaker 1: just like it's the same thing but Annihilation And then
- 41:37Speaker 1: cut to our heroes and you're like Lou Kang and
- 41:40Speaker 1: who the fuck are these other three people standing with
- 41:42Speaker 1: you in similar but distinct outfits from the previous cast. Oh,
- 41:46Speaker 1: we've lost Sonia, Rayden and Johnny Cage.
- 41:49Speaker 2: And then I need to get to talk about Raiden
- 41:52Speaker 2: in the last movie before you get completely We could
- 41:56Speaker 2: first because because he sucks. But two in the first movie.
- 41:59Speaker 2: And I only to say this because we're gonna get
- 42:01Speaker 2: into Raydin in this movie and the recasting. But the
- 42:04Speaker 2: first movie, I hate Rayden, just creepy white guy Rayden.
- 42:08Speaker 2: I don't actually care that he's white. His race doesn't
- 42:11Speaker 2: really matter. He's a god. But he just rolls in
- 42:13Speaker 2: and he's like, hey, luke a, Like he does this
- 42:17Speaker 2: weird voice, and he's really a guy with like white hair,
- 42:20Speaker 2: and he's just like, you know, Modal Komba's pretty cool.
- 42:23Speaker 2: You gotta you gotta sometimes calm down. I don't know,
- 42:27Speaker 2: to win this fight, you gotta fight your inner demons,
- 42:29Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And then he fucks off.
- 42:31Speaker 2: He's like a worse scandal. He sucks.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Yeah, he does have like one or two like appearances
- 42:36Speaker 1: in the movie where like nothing really happens and are inconsequential,
- 42:40Speaker 1: but like, yeah, at least here he becomes a character.
- 42:42Speaker 2: He becomes a character and they recast him, probably for
- 42:45Speaker 2: the better.
- 42:46Speaker 1: And yeah, I think that this is Yeah, I think
- 42:48Speaker 1: this is the one case where like the recasting is
- 42:50Speaker 1: a positive. Sonya I'm a little like I feel like,
- 42:54Speaker 1: while she had some fun moments in the first film,
- 42:57Speaker 1: she doesn't really get development. We kind of have her
- 42:59Speaker 1: fight with k we have forget kidnapped and some really
- 43:02Speaker 1: weird outfit change. Oh and then she kind of just
- 43:06Speaker 1: like doesn't do much. She gets her revenge, she kills Kano,
- 43:10Speaker 1: she gets kidnapped the end, So here she does get
- 43:12Speaker 1: some more development. So having a new actor for it
- 43:15Speaker 1: not the worst.
- 43:17Speaker 2: But then's better. I will say. The first one, yeah,
- 43:19Speaker 2: the first Sonia actress, her line deliveries are are pretty rough. Sorry, yeah,
- 43:25Speaker 2: that actress. This one she does get more play. We're
- 43:29Speaker 2: gonna get into it. Mm hmm. It feels misogynistic as hell.
- 43:33Speaker 2: It is misogynistic as hell. It's brutal stuff. Man.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Yeah. And then Johnny Cage, who they immediately kill off
- 43:40Speaker 1: to give son some motivation. So like, I'll give them
- 43:43Speaker 1: again some kudos. Worry may or may not be due.
- 43:45Speaker 1: If you're going to essentially the term you I'm sure
- 43:49Speaker 1: know this. Some comic books they fridged a character. At
- 43:52Speaker 1: least they frided a male character for once to give
- 43:54Speaker 1: motivation to a female character.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Correct. Yeah, absolutely, Probably because Linda and Ashby was too
- 43:59Speaker 2: expensive or something of the sort, is my guess. I
- 44:03Speaker 2: think it's funnier to talk about the recast because we
- 44:05Speaker 2: watch these back to back, so it's very apparent. Maybe
- 44:08Speaker 2: it's because I'm white guy blind, but I had watched
- 44:11Speaker 2: these two years apart, i'd be like, all right, Linda
- 44:15Speaker 2: n Ashby.
- 44:17Speaker 1: So I will say so two things. First, I will
- 44:19Speaker 1: say I watched it a lot as a child, and
- 44:21Speaker 1: like I said, I think I watched the second one
- 44:22Speaker 1: more never encouraged to me as a child, that was
- 44:25Speaker 1: a recast.
- 44:26Speaker 2: I was too young to notice it. So you are
- 44:27Speaker 2: also a white guy blind, yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 1: And then watching it this time, I immediately clocked two out
- 44:32Speaker 1: of the three, and one of them eluded me for
- 44:34Speaker 1: a few minutes. You guess which one it was.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Because he only gets four seconds of screen time, and
- 44:43Speaker 2: you know, oh, no, it wasn't him.
- 44:44Speaker 1: It was Raided.
- 44:45Speaker 2: I didn't notice. I noticed it because Raydon is like
- 44:51Speaker 2: because again that Raydon's so weird. In the first one,
- 44:54Speaker 2: he's like, yeah, it's gotta be an affect on his
- 44:56Speaker 2: voice that he chose to do. But he the whole movie,
- 44:59Speaker 2: he's like, Gang, you must do this, like it's really weird.
- 45:03Speaker 2: And inn the second one, he's just like, Hey, how's
- 45:06Speaker 2: it going, Guys. He's got like this weird NPR voice
- 45:08Speaker 2: going on. There's a lot of weird voice things. Shau
- 45:12Speaker 2: Kank bad. He's like, if you don't know, who know
- 45:15Speaker 2: shau Khan is, imagine your favorite WWE wrestler grew two
- 45:19Speaker 2: feet tall and he kind of looks like Skeletor from
- 45:22Speaker 2: My Key Man right, Like he's he's an evil action figure.
- 45:26Speaker 2: And the whole time he's like, Raydon, oh you dare
- 45:31Speaker 2: fight me again? Like he's horny, like it's weird him.
- 45:35Speaker 2: The voice doesn't match the guy man no.
- 45:38Speaker 1: I also, I had a moment to watching this where
- 45:41Speaker 1: I was like, do they kill off all the recast
- 45:43Speaker 1: characters or just Johnny character. I was waiting like on
- 45:46Speaker 1: like I'd forgotten if they naked through. I'm like, I know,
- 45:49Speaker 1: Raydon kind of makes it to the end. I know
- 45:50Speaker 1: there's a whole plot with him becoming human, right, Like
- 45:53Speaker 1: I could not remember if Sonya makes it past this scene.
- 45:57Speaker 2: They do like having seen this, Yeah, they do g
- 46:00Speaker 2: I Joe retaliation kind of deal where they just kill
- 46:02Speaker 2: all the original cast members because they didn't want to
- 46:05Speaker 2: be part of the movie.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I got what you're saying. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is
- 46:08Speaker 1: the Transformers movie. No more often it's prime. We're gonna
- 46:10Speaker 1: get a hot rod. Yeah, we're fans. Yeah. The graphical
- 46:16Speaker 1: fidelity of this movie no better despite being I think,
- 46:19Speaker 1: what is it?
- 46:19Speaker 2: I think it got worse. I think it got worse.
- 46:22Speaker 1: You're right. I think the worst example of it was
- 46:25Speaker 1: in the first film when they're doing it's anytime they're
- 46:29Speaker 1: really zoomed out and they're trying to like so the
- 46:32Speaker 1: Goro fight and then the first time we see the
- 46:34Speaker 1: final Arena where they fight Luke King versus a Shang
- 46:38Speaker 1: Sung and like Sonia, there's like a full on chunk
- 46:41Speaker 1: of her head missing because they like didn't roto skill properly.
- 46:44Speaker 1: So like the background is like you don't have the
- 46:46Speaker 1: bad green screen you can see through someone. It's like
- 46:49Speaker 1: there's an entire chunk of her hair that's just missing
- 46:51Speaker 1: in black. Yeah, in the first background facing through. Yeah,
- 46:54Speaker 1: and then in this movie, I remember where exactly I
- 46:56Speaker 1: took this note, but it was early on. It happens
- 46:59Speaker 1: again like so clearly, like they like lasso tooled poorly
- 47:03Speaker 1: and just let it happen. Bro.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I will tell you because I had to write this down.
- 47:08Speaker 2: I wrote that three minutes and forty eight seconds in
- 47:11Speaker 2: this movie. I went, this is gonna be shit immediately.
- 47:15Speaker 2: It's just the all the recastings that we talked about.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Everyone's line delivery gets cheesier. It's all John Cloud van
- 47:21Speaker 2: Damn street fighter level of no way he can defeat us,
- 47:24Speaker 2: like it feels like a Power Rangers movie going forward.
- 47:28Speaker 2: But also I know exactly what you're talking about because
- 47:32Speaker 2: Raydn comes up all weird. He does a flip to
- 47:37Speaker 2: go forward instead of just walking forward the Power Rangers move. Yes,
- 47:41Speaker 2: of course, yeah exactly because extreme. But he ties his
- 47:45Speaker 2: hair within a second because I noticed that to do
- 47:48Speaker 2: said flip, and in said flip, a chunk of like
- 47:52Speaker 2: the whole flip situation gets replaced poorly. Yes, okay, it was, yes,
- 47:57Speaker 2: because it's an emotion and like chunks him fly away
- 48:01Speaker 2: and disappear. So I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's yeah, it's like the first movie almost gets
- 48:08Speaker 1: away with it because it doesn't do it often, and
- 48:10Speaker 1: like it feels older. But here we are several years
- 48:14Speaker 1: later and like you're still looking just as bad.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Like it just doesn't care as much anymore. Right, Like
- 48:20Speaker 2: the hair tie situation, talking about continuity, mistakes happen and
- 48:25Speaker 2: they skip the editing floor or whatever the case might be,
- 48:28Speaker 2: they get passed by the editing bay, but this one
- 48:30Speaker 2: just feels like they didn't care. They went, yeah, just
- 48:32Speaker 2: tie up his hair because he needs to do it.
- 48:34Speaker 2: We're not gonna cut that in or maybe have him
- 48:38Speaker 2: come in with his hair tied, whatever the case might be.
- 48:40Speaker 2: They apparently, yeah, I remember I didn't put in the
- 48:43Speaker 2: fun facts. Again, this is the things like I don't
- 48:45Speaker 2: think they're fun worth sharing, but they come up naturally.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Soul still share them. But there were a lot of
- 48:50Speaker 2: like early shocks that were like really poorly done because
- 48:52Speaker 2: they were kind of like they had to like mirror
- 48:55Speaker 2: the end of the first movie. But they had new casting,
- 48:58Speaker 2: so there's a lot of weird bullshit makes sense apparently okay.
- 49:02Speaker 2: And also to speak to the recasting, the three of
- 49:05Speaker 2: them didn't come back because they read the script and
- 49:07Speaker 2: went no, like.
- 49:10Speaker 1: The director read the script and went no.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Right, Paul ws Anderson is not the director for this movie.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Ye right. He has actually said the poor quality of
- 49:19Speaker 1: the second movie is why he stuck with Resident Evil
- 49:21Speaker 1: for so long, because he didn't want to hand it
- 49:23Speaker 1: off to somebody else and make it worse. Ah, we
- 49:27Speaker 1: will talk about when we get to Resident Evil, because
- 49:29Speaker 1: I have any thoughts about that series, and that is
- 49:31Speaker 1: not today's topic.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Yeah, those are gonna be mega episodes. Look out for
- 49:34Speaker 2: those guys.
- 49:35Speaker 1: It was gonna be fun. Yeah. This movie kind of
- 49:37Speaker 1: starts off with that same attempt to give us a
- 49:40Speaker 1: what is gonna happen for this movie? It doesn't feel
- 49:43Speaker 1: as concise as the first one. It's like, oh, they
- 49:46Speaker 1: broke the rules and they're getting here anyways. I guess
- 49:50Speaker 1: like the whole first movie basically didn't matter because they're
- 49:53Speaker 1: just cheating now.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Yeah, so the whole time, like shau Kan has like
- 49:57Speaker 2: invaded Earth World, I guess, which was the whole point
- 50:00Speaker 2: of doing moral Kombat in the first movie to prevent
- 50:03Speaker 2: this from happening. Lou King in the first ten minutes
- 50:06Speaker 2: of the movie just keeps saying to Raydon, why is
- 50:08Speaker 2: this allowed to happen. They're cheating this. We won Moral Kombat.
- 50:12Speaker 2: This is not supposed to happen. Essentially, I took it as, Hey,
- 50:16Speaker 2: what's what the conceit of this movie? Hey, this movie's
- 50:20Speaker 2: plot doesn't make sense. Yeah, you broke the conceit of
- 50:22Speaker 2: the first movie and you're still just going with it,
- 50:25Speaker 2: and Raidon the whole time just goes yeah, I mean
- 50:27Speaker 2: sometimes things happen, Right, He's so useless. He's the god
- 50:32Speaker 2: that they pray.
- 50:34Speaker 1: And then we learn he's not acting. He's a god,
- 50:37Speaker 1: not an elder god. Those are a weird talking fire
- 50:41Speaker 1: and waterfall in a cave somewhere. And Shao Kan's father,
- 50:45Speaker 1: whose name I'm also forgetting. Who's the god of wind
- 50:47Speaker 1: by the way, in case you're curious, oh is Hee, Well,
- 50:49Speaker 1: oh yeah, that's a thing they reveal before he gets
- 50:51Speaker 1: Origami to death later and then and then like, hey,
- 50:55Speaker 1: there's these rules. Do you mind correcting the rules? And
- 50:59Speaker 1: they go, nah, you'll figure it.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Out exact dude, it's the point of the rules. Then.
- 51:03Speaker 2: The only reason that I'll give that this movie specifically
- 51:07Speaker 2: a pass for that is because Raydon is like that
- 51:09Speaker 2: in the video games all the time, Like in thirty
- 51:12Speaker 2: years of constant reboots and timelines and all that other stuff.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Luke King's like, Hey, aren't you supposed to be like
- 51:18Speaker 2: helping me out. You told me that if I did
- 51:20Speaker 2: this thing, this thing would happen, and Raydon just goes,
- 51:23Speaker 2: I don't know, so my bad dude, Like, I don't
- 51:26Speaker 2: know what's going on. I talked to the other gods
- 51:28Speaker 2: and the other gods were like, I don't know either,
- 51:31Speaker 2: So I will give them points. Because Raydin is useless
- 51:34Speaker 2: in this movie. It doesn't make any sense but source material,
- 51:37Speaker 2: he doesn't make sense either. He kind of sucks.
- 51:39Speaker 1: Okay. Continuing the weirdness of this film, we then get
- 51:43Speaker 1: to my favorite part of the Moral Combat games, the
- 51:46Speaker 1: Rusty travel Underground hamster balls. What why do we spend
- 51:52Speaker 1: so much time explaining these things and talking about them
- 51:55Speaker 1: and how they use the Earth's inner windstream to move? Like,
- 51:59Speaker 1: I didn't do you need this just portals?
- 52:02Speaker 2: We were fine with portals of the last movie. This
- 52:04Speaker 2: is where it had also gotten to the territory of
- 52:05Speaker 2: previous video game movies, where they add stuff in that
- 52:08Speaker 2: isn't related to the movies, which is fine. They just
- 52:11Speaker 2: suck like it doesn't add to the lore. It's not
- 52:15Speaker 2: something that's more interesting.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Basically, if you could replace something with eh, magic and
- 52:20Speaker 1: it fits better, do that. Yeah, uh yeah no the line,
- 52:25Speaker 1: I think what the line he gives is they go
- 52:27Speaker 1: so fast it feels like you're not moving at all.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Jump cut to raided and Sonia in one of these
- 52:33Speaker 1: balls rattling around like it's a fucking teacup right at Disneyland.
- 52:37Speaker 2: It's not a cool scene. They're not cool ideas. They
- 52:41Speaker 2: probably spend a lot of money on it. Just FYI.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I also weirdly feel like this is the poing
- 52:47Speaker 1: to bring up I feel like the first movie did
- 52:49Speaker 1: something I really enjoyed, which was they didn't feel like
- 52:51Speaker 1: they had to ham in a romance plot. Like, yes,
- 52:56Speaker 1: we kind of get the vibe that Sonya and Johnny
- 52:58Speaker 1: is a will they won't they even Katan and lu
- 53:01Speaker 1: Kang like it kind of feels like, oh, like there
- 53:03Speaker 1: might be a thing here, but like we don't need
- 53:06Speaker 1: to focus on it and have a big like let's
- 53:09Speaker 1: have a romantic kiss moment, right, And then this movie
- 53:12Speaker 1: is basically just lu Kang loves Katana so that's the plot,
- 53:15Speaker 1: and Sonia wants revenge for her boyfriend who she dated
- 53:18Speaker 1: for a whole two minutes dying.
- 53:20Speaker 2: I don't even know if they need it, like when
- 53:22Speaker 2: you were like, well they won't. I didn't feel that.
- 53:24Speaker 2: I know it happens in the games. I didn't feel it.
- 53:26Speaker 2: It's it's not happening in a movie, which means it
- 53:29Speaker 2: will happen eventually because it's a movie, right, romance. Yeah,
- 53:33Speaker 2: and I mean, let's talk about the plot, just the
- 53:35Speaker 2: teeny tiny bit here. Yes, from that point on, we
- 53:38Speaker 2: got a new big bad. They're trying to save the
- 53:41Speaker 2: world from said big bad, and then they all go
- 53:43Speaker 2: on off on their like separate adventures. Yes, this movie's
- 53:47Speaker 2: very lu Kang heavy. Let's talk about Let's talk about
- 53:51Speaker 2: a specific scene, the more interesting scene in the next
- 53:53Speaker 2: like sixty minutes, Yeah, where basically nothing happens. But let's
- 53:58Speaker 2: talk about this luke Kang scene. Here. Is this movie's point,
- 54:02Speaker 2: I believe is to build up our protagonist. Let's flesh out.
- 54:05Speaker 2: I guess lu Kang.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Lu Kang's journey sends him off to go meet night Wolf,
- 54:10Speaker 1: who we get all of like four minutes of screen
- 54:14Speaker 1: time with. I really remember him being a lot more
- 54:16Speaker 1: prevalent to what I ever saw this as a kid, but
- 54:19Speaker 1: he basically shows up delivers like the foremost douchebag lines.
- 54:24Speaker 1: After anamorph attacking, uh Luka tells him you need to
- 54:29Speaker 1: complete three tests. Surprise, he never does any of these
- 54:33Speaker 1: except knock him out, so he has to dream about
- 54:35Speaker 1: shit and then encounter Jade, who basically goes, I'm naked
- 54:40Speaker 1: in the woods in the snow, I'm gonna romance you,
- 54:43Speaker 1: and then ha ha, it was a test you passed.
- 54:45Speaker 1: It wasn't one of the tests.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Aah. It's so weird. Uh, it's so so weird. It
- 54:51Speaker 2: has two racist stropes in it as well. Carry on.
- 54:55Speaker 2: It doesn't do anything for Luke Kang's story, but it
- 54:57Speaker 2: has two racist stropes in it where you have to
- 54:59Speaker 2: meet a Native American person to start a spiritual journey
- 55:03Speaker 2: of like enlightenment or self development and stuff like that
- 55:07Speaker 2: night Wilf is weird. He does come off as like
- 55:09Speaker 2: a kid on a playground who like makes you and
- 55:12Speaker 2: then just fucks off and leaves. And then they have Jade,
- 55:16Speaker 2: who's an Asian woman who plays the like seductress slash temtriss.
- 55:20Speaker 2: So those are two racist like known tropes of characters
- 55:23Speaker 2: and movies. And then after that we get cut into
- 55:27Speaker 2: Sonia's side b plot story here where she picks up
- 55:31Speaker 2: her partner Jack's sick matag arms badass.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Like that, you know what, I'll give him credit, Like,
- 55:36Speaker 1: if you're gonna work that character in, they did it well.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Jackson's my favorite character other than Robin Show in this movie.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Jackson is like the redeeming quality of this film.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Surprisingly so I forgot how much time he joined him
- 55:46Speaker 1: by the end.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Yeah, because he makes jokes, so he like does this
- 55:50Speaker 2: Han solo thing that we're missing from Johnny Cage of
- 55:52Speaker 2: Like what's that? Who's that? Why is this happening? He's
- 55:56Speaker 2: very affable, he's very funny, and he accompanies Sonya during
- 56:00Speaker 2: what I believe to be some of the most just
- 56:03Speaker 2: misogynistic things this franchise could ever do yeh, which is.
- 56:09Speaker 1: We get mud wrestling because you need two hot, scandily
- 56:13Speaker 1: clad women fighting in the mud because reasons like it's
- 56:17Speaker 1: just it's so And the worst part is some of
- 56:21Speaker 1: the fight choreo in that fight isn't bad. Now, there
- 56:24Speaker 1: is a there was a moment I had to rewind
- 56:26Speaker 1: and rewatch because I thought it was fake and it's
- 56:28Speaker 1: Sonya does a high kick to kick.
- 56:31Speaker 2: It's Molina. We never get her name, but it's Molina.
- 56:33Speaker 2: So yeah, she doesn't show up ever again in this book,
- 56:35Speaker 2: by the way.
- 56:36Speaker 1: And but they at least cover her mouth, which is
- 56:38Speaker 1: canonical because the whole shant evil fuck face mouth. But
- 56:42Speaker 1: she does like one of those like almost like cartoonish
- 56:44Speaker 1: like kick up over her own shoulder, and I legit thought, like,
- 56:48Speaker 1: did somebody just put a fake leg up on screen
- 56:51Speaker 1: to like make like that's insane, And then no, it's
- 56:54Speaker 1: actually her doing the kick, Like that's incredible, you know,
- 56:57Speaker 1: like performance.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Yeah, the Chorea in this fight was so good that
- 57:01Speaker 2: I almost wrote down as a note this fight is
- 57:04Speaker 2: the most feminist thing in the movie, which is crazy
- 57:10Speaker 2: because the previous two fights involving women is here's a guy,
- 57:14Speaker 2: here's a girl. Enemies are coming, the guy's gonna do
- 57:17Speaker 2: a one on one fight, and only the girls are
- 57:19Speaker 2: ever gonna fight the goons for some reason because they
- 57:24Speaker 2: can't handle themselves, but not enough to fight a named character. Yeah,
- 57:28Speaker 2: so I almost wrote down that this is the most
- 57:30Speaker 2: feminist fight that exists in the movie. It's very bad still,
- 57:34Speaker 2: it's no good it's but like too hot.
- 57:37Speaker 1: We should have about that previous fight. I realized we
- 57:38Speaker 1: totally skeep over Cyrax because that that was my moment,
- 57:42Speaker 1: that was the thing for my childhood that I was like,
- 57:44Speaker 1: this is the coolest thing fucking ever.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Robots, fucky robot Ninjas. Yeah, the beef cheek bros like
- 57:50Speaker 2: are robots for sure. I wrote down a note about
- 57:53Speaker 2: smoke and Cyrex and Sector, which is the cyber ninjas
- 57:57Speaker 2: walked so that spy kids three D could run. That's
- 58:00Speaker 2: what That's what I thought about it. That's what I
- 58:04Speaker 2: thought about. Okay, oh my god, because it's just a guy.
- 58:09Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Foam armor, that's how it is these robots.
- 58:13Speaker 1: But that is the kind of armor someone with a
- 58:15Speaker 1: good three D printer could totally redo for cosplay.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Hitch printer, Drew you need. You need cereal cardboard boxes.
- 58:21Speaker 2: That's all you need.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Okay, car I'm now I still want to do cardboard
- 58:25Speaker 1: like cereal box no paint jobs. All the imaging shows
- 58:29Speaker 1: Cyrax cosplay. That sounds like so much fun for as
- 58:32Speaker 1: good as a fight can be between a guy with
- 58:33Speaker 1: giant fake foam things on his arm and a guy
- 58:36Speaker 1: and eight cartons It is a pretty decent fight. I
- 58:39Speaker 1: feel like Jax gets like fucking wrecked and Sonia has
- 58:42Speaker 1: to save him by the end, which is kind of cool. Yeah,
- 58:45Speaker 1: I don't understand Sonya's picking up some dust and blowing
- 58:48Speaker 1: into the fire and magically burning him to death.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Yeah, like we're in a lab. It's weird chemicals. Is
- 58:54Speaker 2: that what you're is it just just saying to do
- 58:56Speaker 2: this to people. I didn't know about this. I did
- 58:58Speaker 2: make a note about this movie's action where the set
- 59:00Speaker 2: pieces are larger, like there's more explosions, they are more
- 59:04Speaker 2: scenery bits and bigger pieces being blown off and so
- 59:07Speaker 2: on and so forth. And while they're larger, they're way
- 59:10Speaker 2: worse the action scenes.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Specifically, it's in the fight where like sub Zero joins
- 59:15Speaker 1: their team because it's actually sub Zero's younger brother.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Which is on it show up after right like he
- 59:22Speaker 2: says he joins and then doesn't do shit out.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he literally disappears the rest of the movie
- 59:26Speaker 1: like he was written now by mistake somehow. But he
- 59:29Speaker 1: shows up, warns them. Sector shows up, They fight, and
- 59:33Speaker 1: there is a moment where Sector fires a missile and
- 59:35Speaker 1: it's like the most ugly CG missile flying off into
- 59:38Speaker 1: the background and Luke King does a slow mow backflip
- 59:42Speaker 1: nowhere near the missile to dodge it, and I'm just like, what.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Is happening right now? The fighting this like all their
- 59:51Speaker 2: stakes there, it's kind of a tree fighter. There's fights
- 59:53Speaker 2: for random fight sakes. Yeah, there's no like emotional value
- 59:58Speaker 2: in any of these fights. The choreo is worse. The
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: music is worse. The music just feels like all the
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: free knockoff music that you can find when you google
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: in blade techno music.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: There is a moment I noticed really near the end
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: of the film to jump ahead a tiny bit, yeah,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: where there was just no music for like such a
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: weirdly long time that it's like almost you finally notice it.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: And by the time you notice it, the fight, the good,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: actual kick ass music comes in. Finally we get our
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: our return to the intro music.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Softer follow you my notice because it didn't feel as good.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: It felt.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels like muffled. We didn't want to take
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: away from the pangs and boughs, bangs and paws. I
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: get those letters mixed up.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: No, Yeah, this is just in general, yeah, so much
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: worse in every way. They have this plot line with
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Katana and her mom. It's never worked in the video
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: games in my opinion, where her mom comes back who's
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: supposed to be dead, but her mom is there because
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: she's hooked up with Shao Khan. I guess, yeah, she's
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: brain controlled maybe and then maybe not free.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: It's never worked in the video games either, so I
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: won't complain too much there.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I also I need to complain about something else, though,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: and that is Sonya is such a dick in this movie.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: I don't think I'm sorry.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Okay, let's set. Let's set the scene. You you have
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: gone off to do whatever you're doing. You got your
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: robot arms, put on your me me. Your best friend
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: and partner shows up and goes, hey, as I need
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: to get you out of here, like, oh, is something
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: going on? Oh don't worry, I'll explain later. Never explains later.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Fucking robot ninja and a bunch of ninja show up
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: and start killing each other, and they're after you, and
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: you're like, what the fuck you get outside? It's the
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: fucking desert apocalypse. The world has come to an end.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: You're in ruins and you're like, can you explain, where
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: have you been? What happened? Why is it like this?
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Give me and she's like, no, excuse me, and like
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I know that thing in like other movies where it's
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: like I would explain what you would never believe me,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: because who would believe that I went to another world
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: and fought things, except that the other world is fucking
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: here and I'm seeing it happen live. Oh, you went
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: and fought in a tournament and killed a dude, and
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: this evil wizard came here and did all of this.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I don't believe it. Anyways, Let's go kill that evil
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: wizard that's currently doing all of this that I'm totally
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: on board with, like, and it's not like a matter
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: of like he doesn't ask. He blatantly on camera asks
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: these questions to her.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Ask. I was just gonna ask, holl else, do you
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: write a character where he questions the reality of the
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: current world building this happening? True?
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: You can ask.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: Those you can ask those questions.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Just have her go. It's a long story. I'll tell
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: you later. What you need to know now is three
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: lines of dialogue. And I'm not a dick all of
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: a sudden, And then, of course, after her her scanty
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: clad mud fight. There's a weird giant lizard creature that
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Jack just be shat of for some reason. There's no
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: bearing to the story, but hey, giant lizard c this.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: This movie has a lot of weird monsters for no
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: reason at all, except animalodies, which I think was like
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: happening in the Mortal Kombat video game series. Maybe I don't.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: I don't know, so I think animalodies only came in
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: in the third Mortal Combat game, which this movie does
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: somewhat promote. Okay, like the end credits literally say go
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: play Mortal comment Forvie coming out too.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Not after this movie, God damn it. Yeah, they didn't
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: have an end of movie stinger like they did in
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: the first movie where they went, yeah this is probably
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: They're like, yeah, we're done. We're done.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: We're done. We know.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: I this is another movie that I started skipping towards
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: the end because I just create it. I just couldn't.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: It got really exhausting. I got exhausted, and there was
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: a third of the movie left, like a third of
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: it left. We even in our own show notes, we
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: stopped basically making notes after this point in the story.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Right here, now, like there's four notes ish for about
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: a third of the movie.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's babasically things we've mora relatory talked about,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: which is the oh Jane was lying, the girl who
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: lied to you, lied to you about things and lied more.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: And then I will say, as shitty as the graphics were,
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: I kind of love the crazy Kaiju battle you would. Yeah.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: I think about this movie like it's not yeah.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Uh, even though I will admit that Shaukan's hydra heads
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: look very penisy like the veins and everything summer circumcised.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Some aren't. It's really really fucking graphic.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: He's a bald white guy, and sometimes when he turns around,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: I think there was some shadowing he look like saying, yeah,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: oh my god, looks like a penis. Talk psycho. Penis
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: is a penis, you know.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Okay, Well, with that, I think we've kind of covered
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: everything that we have to cover in the movies. Clearly
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: one of these out did the other one. Yeah, but
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I do have some fun facts for you, please. So
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Ed Boone, who is one of the co creators of
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: the original games, actually does the voice for Scorpion in
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: the first movie, which was kind of a nice thing.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: That he was involved.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Yes, I think a fun fact for you turning the
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: tables on because I'm a fan of this series he
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: has and if he continues it, he will beat the
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: world's record for the longest career as one character because
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: Ed Boone not only does it for this movie, he
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: does every single get over here. He really, he doesn't
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: voice Scorpion every single time, but he does do every
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: single get over here. That is pretty fucking cool and
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: I would love to see him get that record. Yes,
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: because the current one is Mario's original voice. But Mario's
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: voice retired or yes, voluntarily tired. Yeah, he I he
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: chose to retire. I think Okay wanted to get out before,
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Like he wanted to get out on a high note before.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: It was like, ooh, he should have gotten out few
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: years ago kind of right. Yeah, but I have met
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: him cry like a baby. Whoa. That's awesome. Also the
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: voice of Parknax just fun listeners from sym speaking.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: About fun voice actors. I gotta give this one to you. Finally,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: oh so uncredited, but this actor is the voice of
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Shoucan big scary image at the end of the first movie. Yeah,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: and also apparently like the sounds for reptile. Was this
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: person also?
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Okay, but it's fucking Megatron Frank WelCom, Oh, that's awesome.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: He couldn't do the regular acting. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: But like, I think you could have done shau Kan again.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Well how we would change the movies? I have thoughts,
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: but like, I think you could have got him to
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: do chou Kan. Yeah, and then really cool.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I didn't know this. The closing credits of the first
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: movie actually contain hidden symbols which is a cheat code
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: for the games.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: I believe it's the combat code combat with the k
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I can remember wanted a loss in the first second.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: It's a cheat code for the second and third game.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: And I think it's like the one they've repeatedly used,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: like it's their versus of the Konami code that kind
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: of can reuse every game. But I don't know if
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: I got it was the first instance of it, but
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: it was hidden in the credits of the movie.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: I think that's sick. I think that's so cool.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Moving on to the second film, there's multiple interviews both
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: with Ed Boone and John Tobias to do creators, who
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: both separately revealed they hated this film so much they
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: considered it absolute worst experience than all the years they
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: spent working on the franchise.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: Wow, in the franchise.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: That's insane, Like to think, this is like what you've done,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Like what two Games is your second movie, and you're.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Like fuck, yeah right, well, I mean like making games
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: is stressful. You ever see Yeah yeah, okay, yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: but it's a labor of love, but it's very stressful.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: So for this to be the worst experience, man.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Actually I worked on I worked at a studio that
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: was doing work on World Combat eleven.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't remember what we did. It was very minimal,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: but we worked on it. Yeah, I was I did nothing.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I just someone someone who maybe programmed up some movement controls.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I fixed their computer once. The second movie has some
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: more fun cameos. The actor who portrays sub Zero in
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: the second film, okay, he gave me his name again,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Oh Franzos he was the first movie. Yes, I'll put
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: his name in later if I find it. But he
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: was reptile in the first movie.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Okay, all right.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: And then to take it full circle, when Rayden gets
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: his one fight scene in this movie where he fights
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: three knockoff reptiles.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: I don't even remember.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: Yep. Well it's worth noting because one of those three
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: masked men, I don't know if you can tell them
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: apart because they all look the same to me. One
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: of them is Ray Park fucking Darth Maul. This is
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: his first acting credits.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Oh okay, that makes sense because he's a martial artist. Yes, okay,
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: that's that's actually super sick.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a really fun one. Also, this is this
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: is a game fun fact, but it ties into the
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: movies with a long one. Bear with me. Yeah, we
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: get one more character in the movie who's I don't
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: think ever named in the films, and it's the other general.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: We have Mataro, the big centaur dude. We have Shiva,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: who's the forum when it gets by a cage and
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: gets no other fight scenes, which kind of sucks. I
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: wanted to see another Goro rematch type thing with like
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: she she's got great effects. I think she looks she
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: looks good. And then we have this red ninja who
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: is I don't think ever named, who, through looking through
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: a bunch of shit online and like checking credits and stuff,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: appears to be Ermak.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, so my.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Fun fact about Ermak. The reason he is called Iermak
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: is because it's the error code the game flashed up
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: when you went into like the cheat menus to like
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: find this unused red Ninja character. Like literally, it's like
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: error macros whatever bullshit code language that would come up
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: if you tried to load up this character who was
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: not fully programmed into the game, and they just rolled
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: with it and left him left his name, yes, And
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: then in the later games they reused him again and
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: again was a hidden character, almost referencing the hidden Ninja,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: which was Nube Sybot, which is why at the end
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: of this movie, Iermak spits out another Ninja named Nube
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: Sybot and again to triple layer the fun facts to
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: end this new Siebot spelt backwards. Is Tobias Boon, the
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: game's creators.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Yes, yes, Do you remember the ninja that gets crushed
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: in the very beginning where Chawcan's like, yeah, he's a
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: purple ninja. You want to guess his name? Is it Rain?
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: It's Rain purple.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: Oh right, I forgot, that's why he was. That's the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: joke I forgot about that. Yeah, I remember someone I
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: remember I was when I was reading the facts that
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: someone mentioned like not even like on the fun facts.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I on a Reddit post. I was digging up something.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I did some diving for this one cause I wanted
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: to get my fast Yeah. But someone comments that rain
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: gets like a two second cameo and I'm like, no,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: that's that's new sidebot.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Where the fuck was Rain? I forgot about that? Yeah,
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Purple Purple Rainiba is the sub zero that died in
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: the first movie. The next sub Zero's brother.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Right right?
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Yeah, the the weird lore and mythology of the ninjas
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: and stuff. It's like, it's some really deep cool shit
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: the movie doesn't touch on, which is fine, don't have to.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: And I think at least the sub zero like my
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: brother taking over, so at least you know there's a
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: good sub zero in the universe. Even if you're right,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: he just fucks off forever.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: When you brought them up, I was like, did I
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: skip that part or was he just not there?
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: No shows up, saves Lukang, fights Cyrax for two seconds,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: freezes him, and then the other one uh then the
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: red Robot one.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk about all the palette swaps.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: It's amazing for a game with so many Palatops. How
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: they they've like made them all unique now, yes, which
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: I kind of command them for as a game franchise.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I kind of fucking love that. I know, Smash Pros
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: kind of did it finally with the like let oh
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: we palatops and characters to make them like their own
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: unique characters even though they're mostly the same, but at
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: least they are different physical characters.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: Now, I like that. Yeah, you gotta do something in
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: thirty years, you know what, I mean, your paycheck somehow.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: So we'll combine the two together. How would you, if anything,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: change these films? Yeah. The first movie, I can't believe
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: I'm gonna say this or this early on into our series,
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: I think is quite flawless. I think I am not
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: versed enough to say, how do you improve on something
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: so iconic and so it like, you know, you know,
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: when you see someone and they've got like a certain
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: outfit on, or they've done something and it's so out
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: there you would you could never but it's so them
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: that you commend them. You're like, you know, what, good
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: on you. That's that first movie. I don't think there
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: is anything you can improve. The second movie is potentially
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: the worst movie we've ever seen.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: I think it might be officially our top pick for
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: bad movie. Wow. Wow.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: And so the litany of things that you that I
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: would change about it is immense. I couldn't even name
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: all of them. Do you have any specifics that you
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: want to share, because I can't even start.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: So I think the first one that hits me I
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: would have loved to do is I think that Shao
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Khan and I've looked at up now it should knock
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: his father the other god.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: There, right. Yeah, he's first.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Of all useless. He has like two scene the movie.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I feel like he's not even I don't think he's
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: a bad actor. I don't think he's the right actor
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: for this role. He doesn't feel big and imposing. He
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: feels like weaker than his son in a weird way.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: His role entirely. Yes, yeah, the whole character is unnecessary.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: I think I would have.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: Left Brian Thompson as Shau Khan, but with the mask
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: on permanently and covering the mouths so that Frank Welker
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: could do the voice for him.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Oh, okay, I thought, exactly at this boy?
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Ugly is it? I mean, I think he looks the
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: rule Okay, but I also kind of like video of
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Shaoucan being more like I don't want to be humified.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: I don't want him being like a person. I want
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: him to be this entity.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Because the introduction of his father also means that he's
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: a lackey. He's not his own exactly.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: I think we could have done away with that whole thing,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: And honestly, I think we both kind of nailed this
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: a little earlier on. I think we could have just
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: killed off or at least written off the other three characters.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: I don't think Rayden needed to be a thing. I
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: think we could have just had like he can't get
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: involved because the world's are emerging, he's gone kill Johnny Cage.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: I think it's still a good emotional beat, even for
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Lou who's gotten really f friendly with him. Yeah, and
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: then Sonia, I don't know how you write her out,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: but I think you could have, you know, done something
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: to get her out of there and still bring in
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Jack's kind of like maybe Jackson's coming.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: To a venture, right, right, all right, Jackson is fantastic Now.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: I think you're absolutely right. I think I think keeping
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Robin show is the right move there. Yeah, the development
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: that they do for his character is not compelling. It's
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: not very good. I don't know how exactly you would
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: have done that. Better get rid of animality, animalities lame, dumb.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it felt like a marketing point. It felt like
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: we wanted to show off animalities because of the new thing,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: which is I'm glad they we don't get a third
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: movie because they would have made Babalaties a thing and
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: that would have been really fun.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Can we practice? Can we practice? Because it's fun? Fatality, fatality, babealaity, animality.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: It was. There was a sexiness of the animality, one
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: that always kind of made me go like that's weird,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: Like I don't just like it, but it feels like
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: it feels like the nags a little too into this.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, I do like the like Armageddon
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: on Earth. Let's take it away from fantasy. There's stakes
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: of losing your home world. They don't really touch on that.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: They're like thousands died, millions will die.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just like world ended. Yeah, we don't see
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: it's like a sixth day thing and then on a
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: seventh day they'll all be dead.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: I got what a weird little inclusion that the Mortal Kombat.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: Yeah confirms Bible is real because Shao Khan comes in
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: and he's like.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: The Earth was made in six days. I was like, what,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I did not even consider the context. I think doctor
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: who recently confirmed Jesus exists, which is another funny one
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: that is amazing, But again, like how do we like, like, honestly,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: the movie could have done the day counter like uh
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Majora's mass style, like counting down to the seventh day
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: to like give us some steaks and make that line
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: relevant because in reality this feels like what it's maybe
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: been a day and a half and they finished the
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: whole thing, Like what was the point of the seven
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: day bullshit? You you could remove the entire like quest
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: to become better with luke Ken. You could have had
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: him guitar training. You could have focused honestly, you could
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: have focused more on Katana's mother and like trying to
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: find a way to cure her or get her unpossessed. Yeah,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: like that could have been their journey.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, some of these plot points were fixed and redone
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: in the latest reboot where they kind of modernize some
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: points they went that didn't work as well, and let's
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: wreckcon some things that are just outdated. So in Mortal
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Kombat One, which released like last year, not to be
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: confusing with other people here with the nineties, Yeah, they
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: call it Mortal Kombat one, that one kind of updated,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: so I think they were working with source material that
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: was in itself quite dated. Yeah, and just in general,
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: it just wasn't strong to begin with. I think, yeah,
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: it's just not It's just there's a litany of things.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Send us your fixes, your big top fixes, you know.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: Or do you really like the second movie and think
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: we're wrong and you want to fight us on it.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: We could Mortal Kombat and fight to the death.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: I'll fight you, bro, dude, I will juggle you, homie.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: I'll get over here, fucking flame whip you come.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: We do gott to rate these movies. We'll do them
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: separately again our usual rules. So first, Mortal Kombat One
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: as a movie, what do you give it as a rating?
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna steal it from you. Oh flawless victory.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Oh damn, that was good.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I had another scale in my dad's better I was
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: gonna give this ten different colored ninjas out of ten.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: Oh that's good, that's good. Are there ten.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: At this point there must be. Actually, I think in
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: the second movie we get five alone, if we got
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: the robot ones, and then as an adaptation of the game,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I think we're on the same pager. They did a
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: good job. It's fighting. The characters feel like the characters
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: in the game. Yes, it doesn't there, It isn't bogged
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: down by story. The story just helps build the narrative
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: we already wanted.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, if you if you watch this movie and you
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: play the game, you go, yep, that's that's.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: The vibe exactly, like in no point did any of
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: the characters feel out of place?
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Is this except since the first movie that got a
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: yes on both questions?
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, we have a benchmark.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: People, Wow, mortal that one. That's crazy. That's crazy. I'm
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: so interested. But when we eventually watched the reboot of
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: this too, the one, yeah, like twenty twenty or twenty
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: twenty one, something like that, that'll be very interesting.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: It'll be it'll be interesting to have like that much
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: time between. Like I think I said to like, it's
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: gonna be a while before we get to the modern
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: CG Super Mario movie. Yeah, but you don't really compare
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: those two. I don't think it a way, but they're
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: not really meant to compare. These will be fun to compare, yes,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: now Roan two.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: But second movie, yeah, that was so good, dude, that
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: was so good. That one. That one is a brutality.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: That's bad. That's yeah.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Someone needs to take this movie out back and in
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: slow mo with X ray vision somehow break its spine
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: with a single punch and have its eyes.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Yes, it is just it's you.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: You had perfection, You had something so good and you.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Street fightered it. Dude, you it god damn.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no it was not good. And then again, by
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: the same point an adaptation. Do you have an actual
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: rating for it though? Ortality?
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, brutality, I like yours a lot. That's that's
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: really good. Uh. I think what's so funny about this
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: episode is Mortal Kombat one is probably at the top
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: of my list of the movies we watched so far, yea,
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: and Mortal Kombat Annihilation is at the bottom.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Of the Oh, like we discussed this behind the scenes,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: but like this will be our This is officially our
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: fifth movie if you count these as two movies to
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: get separately. Yes, we're gonna be putting out a high
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: score table moving forward, and ranking our top five movies.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: And it's crazy. As much as I know that I
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: have to consider the other three in the middle, but
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: we know where and we know we're bottom, which is
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: crazy that it's the same movies. Back to that, Oh
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: my god. Yeah, Okay, Well we know about the movies.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: We've learned a lot about, We've discussed a lot. But
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: it's time to go to a quick ad break before
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: a fun little mini game.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: This is the game section. Baby, we're more combat, so
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: we got to bring in some fighters, some champions for
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: our tournament. Right.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Oh no, I like that framing it even better. First,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: we have a past guest from the gate Leapers family.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: We have Dane. Hello. Hello, I'm thrilled to be back.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: I can't wait to embarrass myself. It sucks because I
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: do have a perfect track record. I've won every time
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I've been here, and I don't think that's happening today.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: Dane as as the leader stat Leapers. That's awesome. I
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: recognized that this does not count for stat Leepers. All right, Yes,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: we made this a Neutrals own for that game. I mean,
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: what happens in press play stays in press play.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: Perfect. I love it. We're only like four episodes in.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: We already have like a rule set, and then Dame
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: reads one for you to to battle, so we have atle.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: REFI toasty believe. I believe is the expression.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Yes, I think I made the same reference to the
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: beginning of the episode as well for Jason.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: So toasty to be here, and also toasty with you,
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: and also toasty with you.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: May toasty be with you follow the sun on the
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: toasty spirit. Oh well, I have a fun game for you.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: But before we get to that game, Oh no, an
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: adorable mammal has entered via an inter dimensional rift.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: Jason, it's Portal Wombat. I don't know why you gave
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: me am I supposed to know what that is. It's
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: you want another reading of that. No, wow, it's our friend,
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: Poral Wombat, our.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: Shows new mascot.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: No.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Portal Wombat is our own, completely legally distinct fighting game
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: that we are creating. Your own press play. It is
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: not a reference to any other game or franchise, and
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: all of the characters are also original and not just
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: an existing character from the Mortal Kombat franchise with one
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: letter in their name. Changed. Premise of game explained. But
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: before I would like to know, datan Adel, what is
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: your familiarity with Mortal Kombat as both the movies and
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: the games. I preface this when you asked me to
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: be here that I haven't played a Mortal Kombat game.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: I think was when they rebooted it, so whatever that
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Mortal Kombat was on, like the new gen Yeah, Mortal
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: nine right, yes, yes, and yeah from nine to eleven
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: to one I.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: Think was the number like nine x eleven to one,
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: the fast and furious way of numbering.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah, So I think that was the last
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: game I've played. However, I do have a soft spot
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: for Mortal Kombat Annihilation. The cinematic masterpiece of Annihilation, and.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: We love that one.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: I spent like most of my summer vacation one year
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: playing Mortal Kombat too with my friend in his basement,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: And the first tape cassette I ever bought was the
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: Mortal Kombat soundtrack, So I mean there's a soundtrack to pick. Yeah,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: it kicks ass, and it still kicks ass. That was
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: I think that was like our redeeming factor for Annihilation.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: When we reviewed the two films, I think we both
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: agreed we liked one over two, but too, still had
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: a good soundtrack.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's mostly sayd by the theme song from
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: one and adl yourself. What is your relationship to Mortal Kombat?
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: H I used to be a big token head or whatever.
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: When life hands you are make arcade or whatever.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: I used to play.
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: I used to play a lot of arcade games. I'll
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: say that. So I was a staple at the local
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: Aladdin's Castle. I want to say it was the name
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: of of the place inside the Carl Sandberg Mall and Galesburg, Illinois.
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: That's where I was first introduced to Mortal Kombat, fell
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: in love. Thought it was so cool and fun and fresh,
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: not like Virtue Fighter or Killer Instinct with all that nastiness,
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: but very much enjoy the game. I think Mortal Kombat three,
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: the arcade version, was my big, my big to do
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: where I would call all time Cyraxow. He was sort
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: of like the Predator from the movies Predator movies, but
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: in yellow combat armor and he would throw a glowing net.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: Love the movie. I also had the I had the CD,
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: the the original movie CD. I think the final song
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: on that soundtrack was my jam Uh was.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: It Sister machine Gun or something like that because that's
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: something like that. I think that Yeah, that was.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: Like, yeah, it almost sounds like pure moods or like
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: Enya or something.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, there's always there's like an
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: adult contemporary like yeah, a weird like slow Jem in it. Yeah.
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: But I mean just for whatever reason, when I hear
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: that song, I just get like swept away to the
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: nineties and I'm like, ah, here to stay. But I
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: think it's like, yeah, Christopher Lambert gives like a look
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: and there's a little lightning in his eyeballs when he's
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: looking at the end of the movie and that song
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: starts off, Yes, and it's it's just bliss. It's just
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: one of the one of the better pairings of a
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: terrible actor and a song coming together.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I always love the out of play song in a movie.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Like it's like I think back to my childhood watching
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: all the old Batman films and like they always like again,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: kiss from a Rose in the end credits of whatever
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Batman that.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: Was Likeatman Forever. I think it was Batman Forever. Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: that's what I just forget.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Uh. It's the end of one of the Boorn movies
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: where they play that Moby song and you're just like,
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: what do you do movie? I think it's a movie. Well,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: luckily today's game will not require any musical knowledge because
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: I don't have any of that. It's gonna work mostly
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: with puns, which I will admit, Adelie, I know you
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: have a bit of a fondness.
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: For Oh yeah.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: So I thought Jason, I would take turns here sharing
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: with you some character descriptions. Ideally you can figure out
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: which character we're riffing on, and then again just change
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: one letter in the name and figure out what the
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: new character name is. I've been doing a lot of talking, James.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: I'll did you take it away with the first one?
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: Whoever says it first, so it's tossed to both of
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: them or yeah, okay, but.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: Let them compete to solve my terrible puns.
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: Should we scream Portal Wombat and then start doing the
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: song but we have the whole song?
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I think whoever can shout out the answer and
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: get closest first, I'll give it to just very quickly.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: I feel like that, like the Moratal Kombat theme song
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: and the rave song from Blade. Yes, I feel like
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: they're first cousins.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, for sure. Didn't we figure out though,
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: Jason not the musician. This is the same from Blade.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a musician. It's the same
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: production company, production company, it's New Line Cinema, so it's Blade.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: It's TMNT like it feels New Line Cinema for sure.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, you're right, Yes, just another tangent. I'm sorry
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: they're doing this weird thing where so they also produced
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: The Notebook and there's a horror movie coming out, and
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: it's like they're like from the people who brought you
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: The Notebook and also Freddy and it's like a like
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: a horror romance, but like they're leaning so hard on
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: the fact that it's like that they they also made
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: the Notebook and it's just a very bizarre like branding.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: I love that though, because it's it's a horror romance,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: it makes sense. I would also love if there was
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: a commercial that said, from the people who gave you
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Mortal Kombat Annihilation.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: They're all so proud of Yeah.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: Yes, So the very first question I've got here for
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: you guys. This actor turned fighter is famously delicious and
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: known for punching his foe right in the sprinkles.
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: Right in the sprinkles famously delicious.
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: I know I know who the character you're talking about is,
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: but I can't figure out who.
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: So change one letter yeah in their.
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: Names delicious snacks instead of jacks.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Now that's that's great though.
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: Damn that is actually pretty good.
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: Uh So sprinkles makes me think some sort of ice cream.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: You're in the right realm of foods.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you have the character I don't know this actor
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: turned fighter, actor turned fighter.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: Well that's everyone, right, Oh, okay, yes, it's yes, I
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: see yes, yeah, I'm thinking like, well, everyone in the
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: movie is an actor, yes, yes, yes, yes, the actors
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: on set? Is it Jimmy Cage. That's Johnny Johnny Johnny Cage,
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: raised eggs, Cage, three eggs.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: My favorite desert item because in my brain was like
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I was trying to figure out Luke Cage, the Marvel superhero. Well,
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: i'll give you a hint. Cage is the word we're
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: looking to change. Mm hmmm, So sprinkles something delicious with
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: sprinkles on it? Johnny Sunday. Okay, I said ice cream
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: was closed and then it's also a dessert item, not
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: that it's also ice.
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: Yeah, cake, Yes, go for whatever reason, my brain was like,
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: sprinkles don't go on cake.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: In this house of sprinkles on everything. That's like the
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: one thing I learned baking from my wife. I have
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: like an assortment of sprinkles for her because it's always
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: a texture thing she needs.
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: Yeah, sprinkles.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: So next up we have a famous martial artist who
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: is the monarch of his people and our main character.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Luke King, lu King Luk one. I thought we were
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: gonna have to come up with team names. Were doing
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: gate Leapers, and my idea was Luke King, do it?
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: Oh, do you have more? No?
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: I stopped there. I realized it's gonna get any better. Well,
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: if we ever do a Mortal Combat gate Leaper's episode
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: one invitation open to addle, but also we'll get you
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: all with that team Nate and.
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: A huge shout out to Rob Schneider.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: King. Now I want to see Adam Sadler Schneider starring
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: in a Mortal Combat three.
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: Now probably closest will get Luke. The guy who played
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: Luke King was in Beverly Hills Ninja right with Chris Farley.
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: Oh dad, he was Robin Chu maybe I think so?
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: WOWND we watch that movie no whole things. Now, your
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: next question is this Special Forces agent turned fighter gets
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: an extra boost when playing on April twentieth, We're.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: Twenty you solved the first puzzle.
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: How blade.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Got the right character? You've got the right character, but
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: see if you can fix the puna. So that was
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: at the same time. I'm legit, honestly, that came through identical.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: I'm giving you both the point for that one. That
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: was like perfect.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: I don't know if that can happen in more combat,
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: but it's happening here.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: I feel you up cut each other and it does
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: the slow mo they both die at the same time.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: The fun Yeah sure, yes, uh. Next, I found a
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: pun for fatality in tune. I can't do it again.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: Too many puns like this one. This cool fighter is
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: literally a sandwich inside of another sandwich subheros so I
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: revealed to Jason earlier that was the first put I
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: came up with and wrote the entire game, just like
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: can make that joke. I was so proud of so
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: tracks because it was so fast too. That just means
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: every other one was gonna go downhill from that one.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: I'm proud of a few on was all be honest.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: Let's see if you're proud of this one. This female
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: ninja is likely to finish you off with a whoopee
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: cushion or some fake vomit.
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: Katana Is that her?
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: No, I'll be honest. When I read this one, I
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: didn't get a personal.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: There's there's three of them that I know of.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Uh, yeah right, there's Katana, there's Alena Jade.
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: I believe in Jade.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so I want to say it is one of
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: those three.
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: Probably Jade.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Jape, Yes, it's Jade, okay jas that Dane Jeep is
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: jape jay. I haven't heard the word jape in so long.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: Yeah, honestly, like I only know of it like when
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: being used, I sarcastically almost like, oh my japes. It's
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: one of those old words that I don't like saying
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: because it sounds almost like I shouldn't be saying it.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: It's like we're gonna find out like ten years from now,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: it's like it's an insult to some racer or some ethnicity. Yeah.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: I feel like, I mean, like so many, so much
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: of our words are that. Yeah. So it's it's really
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: tough when I hear like an old timey word that's
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: been phased down. I'm like, there might be a reason
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: for that.
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: It's a slur against court jesters.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: So if I get canceled in the court jester realms,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: I apologize, yes, or all of our court jesters out
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: there listening today.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: I never liked japes anyways.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: See it doesn't sound good.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: Dane's not being a dirty jape.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: Now I hear it. Now, I hear it.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: You get it.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: Yeah, once you put dirty in front of it, I
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: was like, oh.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: Okay, okay, next up, we have a fighter who has
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: replaced both of his arms with machines capable of transferring
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: printed documents across phone lines. Facts.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you said that like you were waiting for it.
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and sorry, I was saying facts, like yeah, that's
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: that all checks out.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: There's a factual character even yeah, yeah, no printer, for sure,
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: This ninja will not fight you in the morning or
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: the evening.
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: This ninja oh noon kabat.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, yeah. Cabal. I think you were combining cabal inside. Yeah,
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: I'll be honest.
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: I was trying to find a word like change in
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: sybot to make another word, and it was just like
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: I was like spiraling, and then suddenly I saw now,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: and I was like, oh my god, what am I
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: doing life?
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: He was like the Smoke. He was like sub Zero
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: and Scorpion, but Smoke.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so he was. He was a hitting
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: character in one of them. And he's his name backwards.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Is just the creators of the game, Uh, Tobias. They
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: just self inserted themselves into a ninja.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he was the one that you would
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: you would fight if you did the like the whoopee guy.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: Do you remember the whoops? Oh my god? Yes, Well
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: here I have a mechanical ninja, this time one who
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: has already talked to you, maybe about bicycle wheels.
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: What was what? Describe the character again?
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: They are a mechanical ninja, one who has already talked
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: to you, probably about bicycle wheels.
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: Is a Cyras?
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: It is not. I could not find a word that
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: works with cyras. I tried mechanical mention this one earlier.
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: Three cyber ninjas that I know of are sub Zero
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: and Scorpion. Uh it's sector, Cyras and Smoke are the
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: three cyber ninjas.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: Spoke Smoke.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: I gave them one a double because I felt it
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: was a bit of a stretch I didn't really smoke.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Was was like a cyber guy.
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and the versions he's a cyber guy and smoky
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: sub zero. Sometimes he's just a white haired anime dude,
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: like all anime dude should be. This purple clad Ninja,
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: as well as the rest of his near identical clanmates,
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: are instrumental in making sure trains get to where they
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: need to go. That was the first time I was
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: reading that.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: It's that way.
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: I'll be honest, Jason, you're doing great.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: Thanks in the order that they were put down.
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: Purple clad his purple sector.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: No, so this is not one of the robot ninjas.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I don't remember who the purple one was.
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: There was Reptile some zero.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: A name like if there's a purple ninja.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: The irony is the purple being. His color is also
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: a pun in his character's actual character name, Prince Song
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: Rain name. Okay, Yeah, fantastic.
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: Description.
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: I gotta read.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: This is your redemption arc here, he's you can do it.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: He's instrumental making sure trains get to where they need
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: to go. You make up the train go.
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: Rail correct. Yeah, it's tough because Rain and if you
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: had a tea it's trained, so it's you have to
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: have to do some mental gymnast sick to push past that.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: I was thinking Rain as in like a king Rain.
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: Oh r. Yeah.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: No, the character's name is Rain and the reason is
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: because he's purple. They thought it was funny. Great, one
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: final fighter in this game, This ancient mystical fighter will
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: unleash his animality as he turned into a middle aged
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: man with some clubs. Funny, I thought he said he
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: was turning into a tiger.
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: Uh sh this.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Is one of the ones you were proud of, isn't
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: it a little bit?
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: A little bit?
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: So?
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: Is it Shane Shane's Shang Sun.
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: Uh no, but if you if you remember your Mortal
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: Kombat Annihilation, he introduces the concept of animalities to the characters.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: Oh boy, Oh sure.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Khan Chow con s cons the book my favorite Mortal
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Combat crossover. There a tiger, is it? Shao Khan? Though?
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: No, no, m M, I mean Goro doesn't turn into
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: an animal?
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: Probably not in No, not in the first movie. No,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: I'm trying to see too obscure of a character now.
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: Oh no, yeah, I'm trying. I'm reaching back in my
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: in my mind palace I'm reaching back thirty years to
- 1:38:16Speaker 3: playing this game. Uh, can we.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: Get a hint one of the many racial stereotypes popular
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: in fighting games?
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: Oh? Now I feel emboldened to take a guest.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: It's one of those japes. Yeah, I was gonna say,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: would jape be accurate description of this character?
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: God, it's real, boy boy, I can't.
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: Would classically be described as an indigenous character in.
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: The Oh Rayden.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: It's n.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: Traditionally indigenous white guy Christopher Lambert?
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Is it is?
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: It?
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: Is it? Striker Nighthawk? Are those nights something? Something? Wolf?
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: That's the characters?
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: Which is a crazy thing to turn into a tiger
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: because he's not. He's he said he was, don't turn
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: into a tiger, but he actually turned into a middle
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: aged man with some clubs. There aren't many sports that
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: involve clubs. Guys.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: What Yeah, it was a Tiger Woods.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: In case the club thing didn't go through. Maybe the
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: Tiger Woods.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: I thought I had a.
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: Thing there once. I yeah, once it's played out, it's fantastic.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: But I think because there's wasn't there also like a
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: cop that had like those baton things? So I thought
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: I was like, are those are the clubs, but you
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: met the clubs? Was a was part of the pun I.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: See, yes clubs. Yes, a striker, yes, who I realized
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: while looking up characters, they do bring up Striker in
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: the first movie, like for one.
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: Line, yeah that he's dead.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: Yeah, then just he's a thing but he's dead, yeah,
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: because apparently it was supposed to be Striker instead of
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: Sonya Blade. And then they were like, there should be
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: a woman in this movie. I will say, I don't
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: know if from Billions stunts in as as Sonya Blade
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: an Annihilation, but she was not paid enough. Like the
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: falls that that woman does are insane. Oh there is.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: There is a point during the uh gratuitously unnecessary mud
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: wrestling scene where she performs a high kick that I
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: legitimately thought was like someone like a fake leg from
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: off camera to lift in yea, to like get it
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: that high. And then you watch the scene and it's like, no,
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: she's fully in camera. That is legitimately her doing a
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: high kick over her own shoulder. Yeah. I don't know
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: if it's the actress who does a lot of the
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: action because like they don't cut away from a lot.
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: But there's a part where like she takes a pretty
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: hard like hit on a rock and she does. To
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: be a nerd about film, there's a thing called a
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: home alone, which is very obviously like the home alone
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: like up horizontal and falling on your back thing, And
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: it's one of the most dang durish stunts you can
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: do in film because like it's every vital point of
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: contact hits the ground right, it's like your your spine,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: your neck, to your head, your your you know, your
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: your lower back, Like so many things can go wrong
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: with that stunt, which is why it's like it's one
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: of the most paid stunts on set. It's one of
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: the most dangerous ones. So it's like usually people do one.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: The woman who plays Sonya Blade does like nineteen of
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: them in every scene, and it's that's insane, and there's
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: no cut, there's no beating, there's no crash mats being
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: pulled like she it's like wide shuts of her like
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: just eating shit. And there's no way they protected that woman.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: And I feel really bad.
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: That's a lot of a lot of effort for a
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: really terrible movie.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: That's the thing. It's like, there's no way that woman
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: was paid enough because she fucking gave it.
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: That the main actress, not the stunt double, is from
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: Billy Madison, right and Andre Agassi's ex wife, Yeah, and
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: from uh not true lies last action here. I think
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: she's like a she was a model and then wow.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: Yeah I remember reading that she was a model before
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: she got into acting, and that's why it was, like,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: it's so jarring to see like these stunts. I know
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: they did a stun people on site, but like still
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: like whether it was the stunt double or her doing it,
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: it's it's some incredible stuff. Yeah, yeah, it's crazy. That's like,
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: if I could say anything good about Annihilation, it is
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: whoever played Sonya Blade is an animal as opposed to
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: night Wolf, who is just air but also an animal,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: just golfing, just out there golfing on his land.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: I remember, I remember the big takeaway from the first
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: movie with me and my friends was I don't think
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: I'd ever seen someone take such a big swing with
- 1:42:45Speaker 3: an accent as Kano did, where he's like my moment
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: and I'm like, this guy is chewing his lines through
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: the biggest Yeah.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: There's an incredible story about this cano. I don't know
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: how much it's true, but allegedly he came in with
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: the jokey accent because he didn't he wasn't get the part,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: got the part. They later rewrote him into the games
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: as Australian because they loved it so much. Oh wow,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: turns out he's not Australian the actor. He's a and
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: he kept the accent for all of his roles moving forward.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: He just sort of became like that Australian guy for
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: like several years. He has his natural voices, very Cockney English.
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: It feels like he's a poor man Statham like.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: I would kill to see that version of him, like
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: his Cano character in like the Crank movies. Jesus Well,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: as we come to the end of this game, I
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: I'm happy it worked. I'm happy some of the puns
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: got through. I think I may him.
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: Dug a little too far for some fantastic.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: The sub hero one was really It's just it was
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: a dumb juke. Dang, You'll be coming out of this
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: game with a grand total of four points. Unfortunately, Adall
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: will take the win with seven. Whoa first time Yes,
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: first time winner, victory friendship, Oh all the ones, baby Ballady.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: I mean, I'd be down to be turned into a
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: baby again. I've had pretty much all the adult life
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: I think I want, so babies don't have to worry
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: about taxes.
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: A lot of dissect day.
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: Maybe it's a little too dunk up. Sorry, oh now
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: I'm just picture I own a why for some reason
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: made me think of redoing the entirety of the Moral
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: Combat film, but with the Rugrats, just like retail stories
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: or a Muppet Babies Mortal Combat Muppet Babies.
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: It could be like, look who's talking, but look who's fighting.
- 1:44:49Speaker 3: I think that's fun.
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: That's a great idea.
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: We have our winner. We have Adam refis our winner.

- 1:46:44Speaker 3: Can you imagine your finishing move being doing the splits
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: and punching someone in the nuts? What are we doing?

- 1:46:54Speaker 2: nothing's nothing that's gonna happen to.
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: This. This is a god made of lightning. In my way,
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: finishing movie is the Splits.
