- 0:23That's fine. That was a real sloppy intro.
- 0:29I did that to myself. Normally Chris tries to distract
- 0:32me, but today I just got distracted, which I love.
- 0:37Welcome to this week's episode of Anime Club, where two
- 0:40professional podcasters, semi professional, not professional
- 0:45at all, I think then two people who should not be let loose with
- 0:51the Internet sit and we talk about anime.
- 0:57And this year we've made a conscientious effort to try
- 1:00anime that we've never seen before.
- 1:02But hello to Tony and hello to Molly in the chat.
- 1:06It's very lovely to have you join us.
- 1:09So, Chris? Yes, yes, Phoebe.
- 1:12How's it going? It's it's going good, good.
- 1:16We're we're finally trying new things and expanding our sorry,
- 1:20my pump was shipping on us, expanding my horizons.
- 1:24And your pancreas can't take it anymore.
- 1:26It's. It's literally trying to kill us
- 1:29with excitement. And would you like to tell
- 1:34everyone about our lovely affiliate code that we have now?
- 1:37I also, if you haven't already, please subscribe, hit
- 1:40notifications if you like to also hear about anime every
- 1:42Friday. And if you haven't already,
- 1:44check out Straw Chat with the lovely Lee and this this one
- 1:49over here, that guy talking about One Piece every week.
- 1:54But in terms of yeah, we've also got an affiliate code now we are
- 1:57kind of semi professional kind of despite our best efforts.
- 2:05Yeah, it's, I think it's for like a supermarket in Japan
- 2:09where you can buy loads of stuff that's somewhat cheaper over
- 2:13there and some exclusive stuff. I haven't checked it out myself
- 2:18yet but I will do for next episode because I forgot about
- 2:22it. What?
- 2:24Are the details of you down below?
- 2:26The main thing is that if you like Japanese snacks, if you
- 2:29like stationary, if you like, if you're thinking, if you've got
- 2:31birthdays coming up and you find yourself strapped in January,
- 2:34use our affiliate kit code. Get some money off.
- 2:39Personally, when I shop there, I also use our affiliate code so
- 2:44that I can get some money off because every saving counts in
- 2:48this economy. But that's enough like plugging
- 2:51of stuff and selling stuff. I think we've we've kind of, you
- 2:54know, kowtowed to the ever marching force that is
- 2:59capitalism. This week we did something a bit
- 3:05different. This is.
- 3:07When we need to talk about snacks.
- 3:09Sorry, just just because you're on your diet and eating healthy
- 3:13and all nice. Hang on a minute, it's not a
- 3:15diet, it's a lifestyle change. That makes it worse.
- 3:21I'll edit that out. You can't we're live, Chris.
- 3:28Do you slowly? Are you Have you got this week?
- 3:31Well, I thought I'd be supportive and I have a cup of
- 3:35tea out of my nice little mug. I also have some tea.
- 3:43Nice. And what?
- 3:45What's a cup of tea without a little bicky?
- 3:47So I've got loads of. Yeah, you gotta have a Bicky
- 3:49with a tea cup of tea. That's allowed everything in
- 3:51moderation. I've got loads of fingers of
- 3:53shortbread next to us, right next to us.
- 3:55Do you know who got? Everything in moderations.
- 4:00I want enough fingers to make a nun blush.
- 4:04Didn't even touch the sides. That's what the nun said
- 4:12blasphemy for one day battery sacrilege.
- 4:15Just disrespectful general this week, I'm glad you've got
- 4:20shortbread and I hope everyone else has loads of fingers.
- 4:24Everyone else has some yummy snacks.
- 4:26That's Molly saying that. I'm just reading the chat, by
- 4:28the way. I would never.
- 4:32This week we're doing something that was, This is one of our
- 4:34first ever recommendations on Anime Club in our comments and
- 4:41is, I think, widely thought of as being like one of the most
- 4:45popular sports anime out there. And it is Haiku.
- 4:54Is that how you say it? I said that, right?
- 4:56Yeah, I assume so. They actually say it very
- 4:59helpfully. They actually say it in the
- 5:03anime because it is Japanese for volleyball, right, which is
- 5:09handy. So that was good to know.
- 5:12And that little fact is courtesy of our good friend Jake, who
- 5:17looked it up because he was like, Oh, is that Japanese for
- 5:19let's go, which is AI think something that he hears on one
- 5:23piece a lot, But that's Haku, which is very similar, but
- 5:26slightly different. So this is an anime all about
- 5:29volleyball. Chris, tell us a little bit
- 5:31about the Sylopsis. Oh.
- 5:34Yeah, I mean, but watch your first.
- 5:35Because I know that you paid loads of attention to it.
- 5:39Right, we'll get into that. But luckily, luckily I can
- 5:42vaguely remember it. So it follows Shoyo, who's a
- 5:46ginger kid and whose dream it is to play volleyball.
- 5:53He tried to join a volleyball club in his first school, but
- 5:57then these teachers were like, look, there is a volleyball
- 6:01club, but you'll be the only member.
- 6:03So I'm not starting that up because I can't be able to look
- 6:05after you. But that didn't stop him.
- 6:07So he started training by himself and he played with.
- 6:13Yeah, training by himself and he also played, practiced with the
- 6:18women's volleyball team, which we love to see.
- 6:21Yeah, has to be, Which seems to be all very Butch women that
- 6:27have been shown so far playing in the women's volleyball team
- 6:31all have arms like bakers. I didn't even think I look at
- 6:37them. I was just like, this is just
- 6:38like a normal healthy mix of like school kids.
- 6:43It's like they're not like sticks and have bug eyes and
- 6:46everything. And so it's just normal, normal
- 6:48girls in it. Yeah, and Jackson Walsh studio
- 6:53in the chat is saying leave the poor nuns alone.
- 6:56Sorry, this is an an official apology on behalf of nun for
- 6:59nuns. Actually, that apology back,
- 7:03they deserve what they get. All the fingers.
- 7:09Yeah. So.
- 7:11So the kids, he's upset. He becomes obsessed with
- 7:13volleyball. He sees a game in which there is
- 7:17a short king called the a short king who's amazing at volleyball
- 7:22called the Tiny Giant. And he wants to become like the
- 7:26Tiny Giant. Did that speak to you, Chris?
- 7:30It's my It's my nickname in secondary school.
- 7:33Tiny giant. I was a basketball star in
- 7:37secondary school, actually. Were you actually?
- 7:41I actually genuinely don't know if you're telling the piss.
- 7:45I I did play basketball till till I thought that this is a
- 7:49bit ridiculous. I'm 54.
- 7:53And everyone else keeps growing. Yeah, yeah, I was say the I was
- 7:58in year 11, not year 10. I was just like the year sevens
- 8:01are bigger than this. I'm going to stop.
- 8:02Yeah, so I was always put because I'm obviously I was this
- 8:06height. I was, Can you imagine being 6
- 8:08foot 2 at age 13? Absolutely.
- 8:12Like obviously people ripped the Pierce out of me.
- 8:15But because I was always very tall, I was always put on like
- 8:18netball and basketball teams and I think very quickly the the PE
- 8:24teachers and coaches realised that I I was also very lazy.
- 8:29So while I did have a a distinct advantage, it was not one I was
- 8:35ever going to use. Do you know what?
- 8:38I asked. Because.
- 8:39I just didn't want to run, yeah. Hockey.
- 8:43Yeah, I played hockey too. I actually liked hockey a lot.
- 8:48It was violent, though. Yeah, it's something about being
- 8:51able to hit stuff with sticks, do so.
- 8:55Were you dead quick? I wasn't.
- 8:57I was just very aggressive. Phoebe the Wall.
- 9:07Let's just. Did you just put one arm up, one
- 9:10under the pitch and one arm at the other and just stop people
- 9:12moving? Not today, tiny people.
- 9:20Yeah. So, yeah.
- 9:24So he becomes obsessed. He, like, sets up his own team
- 9:29in middle school eventually and manages to encourage enough
- 9:33people to play volleyball that he can play one, one match only
- 9:40in his entire middle school career.
- 9:43And then he gets to go to high school.
- 9:44And that's where the story really begins.
- 9:47But during this time, he has also made a nemesis who I
- 9:51thought reminded me a little bit of Lee.
- 9:55King of the. King of the Court.
- 9:57King of the. Court, King of the Court.
- 9:59King of the Balls. Kagiyama, yeah.
- 10:02Kagiyama, Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Kaggy.
- 10:07There's Hinata and Kagiyama Kaggy and they realised that
- 10:13they're now going to the same. So before they were going to
- 10:15different middle schools were on different teams, kind of respect
- 10:19each other's talent, but hate each other because they're very
- 10:23competitive. They now realise they have to
- 10:25work together and that's where the story really begins because
- 10:28obviously magic of friendship. So that's kind of like a brief
- 10:34synopsis. Let's dive into it.
- 10:36Chris, what do you think? What were your give me your
- 10:40broad strokes? So what I thought going in and
- 10:46then what I thought coming out, just like they're not enough
- 10:48fingers. So when I first went in, I
- 10:51thought, well, haiku, it could be interesting.
- 10:56I didn't know it was the Japanese volleyball.
- 10:58I thought it was like a poem thing, the haikus.
- 11:01But that's. All OK.
- 11:03Yeah, that is on you. I saw the cover and I don't
- 11:08know. Have you ever seen Shaolin
- 11:09soccer? I love Shaolin soccer.
- 11:14In my head I thought it would have been something like this.
- 11:18There would have been some crazy powers, a bit of a bit of humour
- 11:21and a bit of everything at that. And then the first episode
- 11:24started and I was OK. And the the Lorna ginger guy,
- 11:29Sorry, I'll just look at his name again.
- 11:32Hinata. Yeah, Hinata.
- 11:35And he was all right. You could tell you had like a
- 11:39little bit of passion and it kind of kept you hooked as in as
- 11:42this, because I always root for another dog.
- 11:45I love an underdog story, whether it be like, you know,
- 11:48the Mighty Ducks or something like that.
- 11:50And. The ultimate of underdog
- 11:53stories? The mighty yes.
- 11:56Side note, isn't it weird how that that guy was a drunk
- 11:59driving and as a punishment got to train kids how to play
- 12:02hockey? But anyway, right, yeah.
- 12:08Start. Start.
- 12:09Going on from there and I was like, oh this, this isn't
- 12:14there's going to be no special powers in here.
- 12:17This is all going to be I don't know.
- 12:19It's very tame for me and animations good.
- 12:23The opening musics fine, but I don't think it's.
- 12:28You wanted more actual violence or magical powers?
- 12:31Yeah, what it is. I don't know if I'm just
- 12:33choosing choosing the wrong sport anime, if there's like a
- 12:38blood sport anime or something or boxing movies or I don't know
- 12:43is what's that M Jung Claude Van Damme film where they go
- 12:46together and he like gets the Talton powder in his eyes.
- 12:52And he's like another one blood sport.
- 12:54Yes, if there was an anime version of Blood Sport, I think
- 12:59I'd be down for that. But this?
- 13:02It's such a bad film though. That's the one you want
- 13:05emulated. Although this is the thing.
- 13:07Fist of the North Star. Terrible live action fucking
- 13:10brilliant anime. Yeah, exactly.
- 13:14Yeah, maybe. But I've tried it.
- 13:19It's it was something new and it was a bit not linear for me as
- 13:25well. I was saying just before we
- 13:28started it here, it's like a Hallmark Christmas film where
- 13:31you look at a character and you get about 5 seconds of what
- 13:34they're about. You're right, like right, this
- 13:36is going to happen. They're going to become friends,
- 13:38they're going to kiss, and it happens 90% of the time.
- 13:44So yeah, it's my opinions of it. I don't think it's a bad anime,
- 13:48but I don't think it's a good one that will grip us.
- 13:51Yeah. And to be fair, Mike, that was
- 13:53also, I had a very similar reaction.
- 13:55I'd felt like it was a bit like anime by numbers.
- 13:58Like you could predict. If you watch a lot of anime, you
- 14:00could easily predict this. I think the animation is is
- 14:04decent. It's on the high end, especially
- 14:07when you've got the kind of action court shots and they find
- 14:10interesting ways of like presenting the back and forth of
- 14:15volleyball, which could actually be quite boring.
- 14:17Like I think they do a decent job of of making the sport sport
- 14:21bits relatively exciting. The but yeah, it is like it's a
- 14:28bit predictable. And I also thought like it was a
- 14:31bit like a Hallmark movie, except for I thought Kageyama
- 14:33and Hanata at some point we're going to kiss.
- 14:36I was like, have I accidentally picked like a some sort of shed
- 14:41and I anime? But yeah, no, it's apparently, I
- 14:48think it's just a competitive edge as opposed to deep burning
- 14:52romance, which is, you know, maybe some notes, but.
- 14:58I was just going to say if it's we're, we're both saying, I
- 15:02don't think we're the target audience for this because I
- 15:04think if we were a bit younger than we are now because we're
- 15:09both young, young hip people. Of course, but if we were just a
- 15:13little bit younger. But who do you think the
- 15:16demographic is for this? Who do you think?
- 15:18I think that. I think if I was 12/13 and
- 15:23watching this I'd be like hooked.
- 15:28Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:31I think someone who's mad into volleyball in 1013.
- 15:34Also, if I you know, I was really into volleyball, but I
- 15:38actually thought they did a good job of making volleyball
- 15:41interesting for someone who's never played or understands
- 15:44volleyball. Like they do a good way they
- 15:48they explain the game, but in in a way that is very like story
- 15:53driven. So you don't just get lots of
- 15:56like rule dumps. You kind of like get you learn
- 15:59the rules of volleyball in like a kind of like as it becomes
- 16:02relevant to the story. And that I thought was actually
- 16:05quite skilful. I think as an anime, it does a
- 16:07good job of like introducing you to the sport, which I think is a
- 16:11kind of what sport anime should do.
- 16:13They should make you kind of excited to understand the sport
- 16:17and see the sport play out as well as like what know what
- 16:20happens to the characters. But yeah, so but with that kind
- 16:30of that's yeah, there's just like we're just getting balls in
- 16:33the live chat. It just made me laugh.
- 16:34I was just being a child and trying to ignore it, but I
- 16:37couldn't. And Chris knew immediately that
- 16:39that's why I was laughing. The bull, LOL.
- 16:45Bull. But with that in mind, I've
- 16:49pulled together a bit of a volleyball quiz to see if you
- 16:51were paying attention to and like, because I would say before
- 16:55watching this you would know nothing about volleyball, right?
- 16:58But now you've watched 3 episodes, you might know
- 17:01something so. Right.
- 17:05I hope it's the same as tennis or something.
- 17:07OK. Good question.
- 17:11Well, this is the first, First thing is that obviously it isn't
- 17:16because there are more people on the court, but how many people
- 17:20are on each team in the court in a game of volleyball?
- 17:25And I've got multiple choice because I thought it's
- 17:27otherwise. It's completely unfair otherwise
- 17:29I was. Just going to slightly Google
- 17:31there, OK? Yeah, so you've got a 6B10C5. 5.
- 17:48Oh no, I'm afraid that's incorrect and I have come with.
- 17:50Sound effects 5 seconds is left on me guessing so I would say 6.
- 17:56No, your second guess is right, but I'm afraid I do have to take
- 18:00your first for the final score. There are 6 people on yeah.
- 18:08Oh my God that would be my absolute dream job to be the
- 18:11mastermind presenter. I feel like it would be the best
- 18:13job ever, but that's a side note.
- 18:16Yes, there are 6 people on each team.
- 18:18Question #2 What was the original name of volleyball?
- 18:21It hasn't always been called volleyball or hayaku in in
- 18:25Japanese. Was it A lacrosse, B volleyball,
- 18:31volleyball but two separate words or C Mintonette?
- 18:37Sorry, what? Oh, Mintonet.
- 18:40Mintonet. Mintonet.
- 18:44What's a Minto? Minto.
- 18:47So MINTONETTE. I'm going to go out for fun.
- 18:54Mintonet. That is correct.
- 18:57Yay. Yay, play claps all round,
- 19:03that's one point. Well done.
- 19:05Get in whatever tire. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:11When was volleyball first created?
- 19:15A 2004, B 1912, or C 18950. It's got to be an older one
- 19:23because when was ball, when were balls invented?
- 19:29So. I mean, that's like chicken and
- 19:31the egg. What came first, man or ball?
- 19:37I'm just thinking, have I ever seen a picture of do you know
- 19:41them Victorian onesie suits at the beach?
- 19:44Yeah, yeah, yeah. Have you seen?
- 19:46One of them play people playing volleyball or some kind of
- 19:48people play football. Back then, that was 1890,
- 19:53whatever that was 95. That is correct.
- 19:56Volleyball was first created in 1895 in Holyoke, MA.
- 20:01It was up by Miss Mr. Minto. My Mr. Minute Minute Internet
- 20:09number 40. So that's, you've got 2 correct
- 20:13so far. Yeah #4 who created volleyball?
- 20:17Was it? So talking of Mr. Mintonet, was
- 20:21it a John A Bellstrad, B William G Morgan or C Elijah C Camp
- 20:26would? Oh I hope it's Elijah C Camp
- 20:30would just for the Lord of the Rings reference.
- 20:34Is there a Lord of the Rings reference there?
- 20:36Yeah, Elijah Wood, he was in Lord of the Rings.
- 20:40OK. And he's very camp Wood.
- 20:45Don't judge, Don't judge I'm. Not judging, I'm just saying I'm
- 20:50afraid it was actually B William G Morgan who was a YMCA director
- 20:54and created the sport of volleyball. 5:00 I've got ten of
- 21:07these. Oh.
- 21:08That's fine. That's fine.
- 21:10When were the first volleyball Volleyball.
- 21:13When were the first volleyball World Championships held?
- 21:17A 1949 to 1952, B 19801872 to 1918 or C2 thousand 2004?
- 21:31Oh no, that's the first. Oh, OK, so that's the first date
- 21:36is the men's. The second date is the women's.
- 21:41So I'm going to go with it's not the 1870 because it was invented
- 21:47in 1890 odd like you said before.
- 21:49So that's the middle one gone. Oh.
- 21:51That's good. I'm glad you're paying
- 21:53attention. I am unlike the show the I'm
- 21:55going to guess the 2000s one just for fundsies.
- 22:02OK, so it was actually 1949. That's when the first men's
- 22:07world championship was held, while the first women's
- 22:09championship was held in 1952. And I imagine they were wearing
- 22:16the full bathing suits rather than the bikinis.
- 22:22How? OK, so number six, how is the
- 22:24serving team chosen? Is it A a coin toss, B the
- 22:30referee gets to choose, or C the first team to catch the
- 22:33volleyball when it's thrown up in the air?
- 22:36Thrown up in the air. I know this one.
- 22:38A do what is not my answer. I'll choose the coin toss.
- 22:48That's, I mean, I'm taking pity on you because so far you've
- 22:54only got 2 out of 6, right? So I'm going to give you that,
- 22:57but it is, yeah. It's a it's the coin toss.
- 23:05Yeah. 7:00 What are the points in called in volleyball?
- 23:11Are they called goals? Are they called points?
- 23:14What are they called? Scores.
- 23:17So when the team do do the thing and when they win a thing,
- 23:22what's going up on the board? So it was first the first one we
- 23:28was in. Molly's saying not the pity
- 23:30points. Yeah, it's very much that.
- 23:34First one was in the 60s Abraham Lincoln 4 score and seven years
- 23:39ago big volleyball man score. I'm afraid they are simply
- 23:49called points fixed. But on that note question #8
- 23:55it's OK, you've only got a couple more to go.
- 23:57If you score a point in volley volleyball doing a spike which
- 24:01is where you hit the ball down over the net, what is it called?
- 24:04Is it a a kill, BA down or CA hit?
- 24:13A down is not my. I got that wrong.
- 24:23Yeah, no, it's, it's a kill. Oh no #9 penultimate chance to
- 24:30redeem yourself. What is the number of times a
- 24:33team can hit a ball without passing it over the net?
- 24:36Is it A1B4 or C3? 4 3.
- 24:53Yeah, a maximum of three times without passing it over the net.
- 25:00Otherwise it becomes a fault. Last question and I'd like to
- 25:05say thank you to welovequizzes.com for all of
- 25:07these questions because I wasn't going to write them myself.
- 25:12Then what is the player who specializes in defence called?
- 25:16Is it a a libero, BA, freestyle or CA blocker?
- 25:26They they do what? Sorry, they concentrate.
- 25:29On they specialized in defence on the team, so you've got six
- 25:32players, they all have a different role.
- 25:34Blocker. I'm afraid that is sad Horn.
- 25:41Oh no. It's called the libero, a
- 25:45volleyball player who specialises in defence can be
- 25:48substituted in at any time as long as the ball it's not in
- 25:51play. So you Chris, you've got 4 out
- 25:57of 10. I can safely say that you have
- 25:59learnt nothing from the first 3 episodes of.
- 26:04Volleyball over before it began. Volleyball careers even before
- 26:08you even started it. Sad horns all round, but you
- 26:13were a terribly good sport. And really, isn't good
- 26:15sportsmanship truly the greatest thing of all time?
- 26:20I mean, it's not better than winning.
- 26:24It's not better than winning in terms of like characters though.
- 26:31Did you have any favorite characters at all?
- 26:33Did you connect with any of the any of them?
- 26:36Who were you rooting for? You know me.
- 26:43Yeah, it was Hinata, wasn't it? Because he was plucky and
- 26:46optimistic. And he was technically the the
- 26:49underdog. So the two main characters in
- 26:51this is Hinata and Kagiama. Kagiama is the absolutely
- 26:56miserable as balls lone wolf, and it's weird because when they
- 27:00try out for the the high school team, isn't it?
- 27:04They're kind of like, right, He's he's promising, but no, you
- 27:10need to do this set challenges, but you need to do it together.
- 27:14So and then I think they're on in the second episode, it's
- 27:17revealed about why did you do that?
- 27:18Why you being hard on these two kids, the kids.
- 27:21And he's like, well, Kagiama has got real potential, but he's an
- 27:26asshole. He's a lone wolf and he kind of
- 27:28be a team player and this is a team game.
- 27:31So he needs he needs to kind of learn that.
- 27:33And then you get Hinata who is just like a full of enthusiasm
- 27:40but not as much skill. Yeah.
- 27:43So it's kind of like I think he use he hasn't got his full
- 27:48potential yet, which is code for is he's not there quite, quite
- 27:52there yet. He needs he needs more training
- 27:54and they'll kind of balance. Each other.
- 27:55He has like all the he has like all the raw athleticism, but
- 28:00because he's never played consistently with a team or with
- 28:04people who are, like, skilled at his level, he's never been able
- 28:10to unlock that. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:12Yeah, so I I do like that dynamic in it and that I think
- 28:16that was the driving thing, that goddess to episode 3.
- 28:21But I've got a out of them too, you know, just because I love a
- 28:25puppy dog character full of energy.
- 28:27He's kind of innocent and yeah, what about you?
- 28:32Yeah. I liked Tanaka who was the like
- 28:36shaved head upperclassman who so at one point in in the game, so
- 28:42when they're told to like go work together, their final
- 28:46challenge is that they have to come back and play a three on
- 28:49three-game with the other new players to kind of show off
- 28:55their skill and that. And Kagiyama is told that if he
- 29:02doesn't, if they don't win, then Kagiyama will not be able to be
- 29:04a setter. And a setter is the person who
- 29:07sets the ball up for other people to hit it over the net.
- 29:12And but because there's only two of them, one of the
- 29:16upperclassmen gets put in to help them.
- 29:18And it's Tanaka. But he kind of is like he's like
- 29:23kind of doing it on the slide because he's been told he's not
- 29:25allowed to, like they're not allowed to practice in the gym
- 29:27and stuff. So he's like being really brash
- 29:30and sorry, there's another balls just got in the chat.
- 29:36Ball, ball, ball. I didn't know that that was
- 29:42going to be a fun game we were going to play today.
- 29:44Thank you very much. Jackson Wolf and Tanaka is like,
- 29:51so he's like this kind of very brash.
- 29:53He's super judgmental. Like the first time he meets
- 29:56everyone, he's like just like really ragging on them.
- 29:59But he actually turns out to be like really like wanting to help
- 30:03them in a way that the other upperclassmen may like.
- 30:07He seems to have like a bit of a soft heart.
- 30:09So I think he's one of those people that has like a quick
- 30:11temper, is a bit judgmental, but like inside is distinctly gooey.
- 30:14And those are my favorite type of characters.
- 30:18I love her like like a rough around the edges but like heart
- 30:22of gold kind of character but. Yeah, I get.
- 30:30I see them. Both.
- 30:36There's more balls in chat then points I got for the quiz.
- 30:40There is officially you've been overtaken by the chat.
- 30:44If this was a game of volleyball, the chat would be
- 30:46winning against us. Yeah.
- 30:50So that's I, you know, I thought he was great.
- 30:53So yeah, that was that was my favorite character.
- 30:57Was there anything else, like anything else that kind of you
- 31:01think it's worth mentioning about this anime that you as you
- 31:03you were thinking about as you watched it?
- 31:07And yeah, I was, I couldn't help think while I was watching this.
- 31:12I think I need to find, I need to try another sports anime
- 31:16either on here or by myself that has a sport that I know a little
- 31:21bit about. Because obviously from the quiz
- 31:25we know we know nothing about volleyball.
- 31:28I yeah, I also, I'm curious, what is the sport that So if you
- 31:33were going to pick a sport that you know enough about to be like
- 31:39drawn to an anime, what sport would that be?
- 31:42So you'd never ask feed, right? So this, this, this, this sport,
- 31:46right? It's a German one where there's
- 31:51forklift competitions where they lift things and they go for
- 31:54obstacle courses and then they nail them down.
- 31:56It is addictive. You've got to watch it sometime.
- 31:59The competitions are like 10 hours long or something, but
- 32:02it's amazing. There's another one which I
- 32:05think is a segment from a game show where basically they get
- 32:10irregular shaped objects and they have lives and have to put
- 32:14them in the middle exactly in the way them afterwards.
- 32:18And honestly, you can get proper into it.
- 32:24I should have known. I should have known it would be
- 32:26that or like like big weed of cheese down the hill or
- 32:29something. I knew I should have known it
- 32:31would have been something obscure and wild.
- 32:34They've raised something else right And I'm not, I'm not a big
- 32:37fan of like MMA and fighting, stuff like that, but have you
- 32:40seen the one where they dressed in armour and they use weapons?
- 32:45What, like night jewels? Yes, basically.
- 32:48It's like skin arms. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:52They'll be in a in a ring and they'll have like a Mace or a
- 32:55sword. I don't think they'll be sharp
- 32:57because they clash of each other's armour, but the brick
- 33:00bones and stuff, which I like watching, to be fair, I like
- 33:03people hurting and I'm watching this happening.
- 33:07So. Oh yeah, lighter sports.
- 33:10I like the part in the Olympics where they carry that big
- 33:13lighter to the to. The massive it, which is
- 33:16basically a giant lighter, yeah. But there's no like competition
- 33:21in that. Yeah, it's amazing that even as
- 33:25Molly says references lighters in the chat, I can hear a
- 33:28bitterness to her tone. Yeah, Molly doesn't like as
- 33:32collecting lighters. I think she she sees the joy in
- 33:36the eye and thinks why? Why?
- 33:41Why is that allowed? Yeah.
- 33:48Nice. I think if I was going to pick a
- 33:50sport, do you ever remember one man and his dog?
- 33:57It's a weird thing, no? One man and his dog was a sheep
- 34:04herding competition that used to be on telly in the 90s.
- 34:07And it would be amazing. And you know, you'd have, you'd
- 34:11have the guy in the field like whistling and being like come
- 34:13by, come by. I can't, I can't whistle right
- 34:17now under pressure. I'm I'm a nervous Whistler,
- 34:22which is why I could never do it And my dog doesn't obey me, so I
- 34:26can't do it. But I used to love watching it
- 34:29and I genuinely I get emotionally moved by the bond
- 34:34between shepherd and sheepdog. I think it's one of the most
- 34:37magical things to watch. OK.
- 34:41Because the dogs are so skilled and they're so like that, like,
- 34:46when you have like, those people, like in a zone together,
- 34:49like the dogs in the zone, the shepherds in the zone.
- 34:52And you watch them just like wrangling all these sheep that
- 34:55also all have a mind of their own and want to, like, be off.
- 34:57And you watch these dogs, like, do it with such skill.
- 35:00They're so, so clever, like the cleverest little border collies
- 35:04in the whole wide world. And I find it amazing.
- 35:07And I'd love to see an anime. And you can imagine it, can't
- 35:10you? Like, like, imagine all of like
- 35:12the Studio Ghibli style European kind of nostalgia art but with
- 35:20the exciting action of magical dog whistles.
- 35:26Do you know what I'm thinking of?
- 35:28All these sheep will have different personalities.
- 35:30One of them will die and they'll be like, I don't know, a buddy
- 35:35Wolf comes over from the neighboring village or
- 35:37something. Do.
- 35:38You know in Naruto where Kiba and his dog are fighting and
- 35:42Kiba's dog comes in and tries to save his life Akumaru and then
- 35:46gets hit and nearly dies and Kiba has to like run off with
- 35:49Akumaru to save his life. That bit makes me cry all the
- 35:52time and I think an anime of one man and his dog would have so
- 35:56many moments in that where like the dog gets trampled while it's
- 35:59in training by like a really mean ram.
- 36:03I'm just thinking. I think it's a goer.
- 36:06But with a with an old man former, he starts saying come
- 36:12back, come by but. Sadly, like come by, come by.
- 36:19It could be from the point of view of the sheep.
- 36:22It could and then and then it's a whole different thing, isn't
- 36:25it? Because there's these sheep are
- 36:26being constantly, constantly terrorized by something that
- 36:29they think is a wolf. Yeah.
- 36:35So that's what I would go for is like a one man and his dog vibe.
- 36:41Weirdly, they do. They do that up here in Glendale
- 36:45show. Today.
- 36:47Every August. Stop.
- 36:51Love it, absolutely love it. I also think it's amazing, isn't
- 36:56it, that we've created that we've taken wolves and over like
- 37:01centuries have created little farm hands.
- 37:06It's I think it's just kind of magical, that story.
- 37:09There's a Co evolution between man and dog.
- 37:11I think it's glorious. So I don't know if that's a
- 37:18sport. The other option I thought would
- 37:20be like kite surfing or windsurfing or something because
- 37:23I can imagine that being cool as hell.
- 37:25And there was like a cartoon I remember from my childhood about
- 37:30surfing, like kids surfing. And I can't remember what it was
- 37:32called, but it was it was good. And I can imagine an anime would
- 37:35be awesome. It was it.
- 37:37Was it an American one? Yeah.
- 37:40Yes, and Rocket. I think it looks a bit like the
- 37:43Wild Thornberry's, the way it was animated.
- 37:46Yeah, yeah, with. The backwards cap on.
- 37:49Yeah, and there's a chubby guy who has a long board.
- 37:51Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:53Rocket something good friends or yes or.
- 37:56Yeah, something it was had it had like a it had a not surfy
- 37:59name I think, but it was great. So I was also thinking like a
- 38:04surfing type anime would be fun because you can imagine like
- 38:07some great like stills of waves and things that'd be cool.
- 38:12So I don't know if that's. A sport?
- 38:16Volleyball. Yeah, so big question, will you
- 38:24be watching past episode 3? Nah.
- 38:29It's it's not for me. It's it's, it's not bad, but
- 38:35it's not good. Nothing's gripping us to come
- 38:37back. I think I've predicted the, the
- 38:42the series. So I'm guessing that they've
- 38:46become friends, they find a new enemy, they become friends,
- 38:51friends, a new enemy, they become friends, etcetera,
- 38:55etcetera, rinse and repeat. An enemy where it doesn't become
- 39:00friends and it becomes a reoccurring enemy.
- 39:03It's one of them things. Yeah, and you can already see
- 39:08that starting to happen with the, well, Cisco.
- 39:11There's like Takashima, who's even taller than Kagiyama.
- 39:14Oh my God, now I agree. I also won't be watching past
- 39:19episode 3. I thought it was a decent anime,
- 39:22right? I have no qualms about how it
- 39:24was made, but I I do feel like it's a little bit anime by
- 39:28numbers. It's like paint by numbers
- 39:30version of anime. You can see it mapped out in
- 39:32front of you and it might be that the journey that it takes
- 39:36you on is is worth it, But it's not like some other animes that
- 39:40we've watched where I'm like, oh, this is the journey it's
- 39:44going to take me on. It will be weird and wonderful.
- 39:47I think it will just be a bit predictable and maybe there are
- 39:49times when that's nice as well as like a way of escapism.
- 39:53So I think if you if you need like a kind of something that's
- 39:56not going to really challenge you, it's going to like fill you
- 39:59with a sense of warm fuzziness and teamwork and give you that
- 40:04underdog story, this might be for you.
- 40:07I also think it might be if you're a parent and you have a
- 40:10child who's around like 8 or 9 and just starting to get into
- 40:15anime, I think this is a safe bet as well.
- 40:19If they're a bit sporty or even if they're not a bit sporty, but
- 40:22you kind of want to like encourage a bit of like
- 40:26athleticism, I think this might be a fun anime to to put on for
- 40:30kids. But I agree, I think we maybe
- 40:32aren't the target audience. Bit too old, bit too cynical,
- 40:37seen too many animes. But that leads us on too.
- 40:43So this year our new format is each week we challenge each
- 40:47other in some way. This year we this week we kind
- 40:50of copped out and just were like, should we roll dice for it
- 40:53because we didn't have any other ideas of what other challenges
- 40:56to do. So I have dice and a dice.
- 40:58Tray, do you? Have a dice?
- 41:04Yeah, great. And we're going to roll for it.
- 41:07And whoever rolls higher gets to pick next week's anime.
- 41:09Are you ready? Yes.
- 41:12So I'm going to you're going to have to trust us and out to
- 41:15this. So I'll note mine first because
- 41:16yours is sunscreen. That makes sense.
- 41:19That makes sense. I've got a 17.
- 41:24Nice, that's a good roll. I've got a three, Chris, what
- 41:31will we be watching next week? So next week and I've actually
- 41:36just found out that this has been re released or it's got a
- 41:39continuation on and I loved it watching the original series and
- 41:44I'm excited to see how good it is next.
- 41:46And you've never heard of this? It's called Bartender Glass of
- 41:51God. Yeah.
- 41:53So from from what I remember of it, I haven't looked it up since
- 41:56and it was a episodic thing, so I think it was a very loose
- 42:01timeline story going between them, but.
- 42:04I'm into an episodic anime lately.
- 42:06It's like I'm I feel like I'm done with big arcs for a little
- 42:09bit. Yeah, I mean, I'm watching One
- 42:11Piece, so yeah, Yeah. Yeah, you're deep in the big
- 42:15arcs. Yeah.
- 42:16So basically what happened is what would happen is a customer
- 42:20would come in and order a drink and if I remember rightly, he
- 42:26asked them about their day or their life story and he decided
- 42:29their perfect drink and it would just go through their life and
- 42:33what they've been through and it was a very slice of life.
- 42:37Sit back and relax. You don't have to.
- 42:41Even if you don't like an episode by saying I don't like
- 42:44this customer, go to the next one to be something completely
- 42:46different. So I am, I'm looking forward to
- 42:52that. We haven't done a lot of slice
- 42:54of life, really. So that'll be a fun, no.
- 42:58So that'll be fun. The only, in fact, I think the
- 43:01only slice of life we've really done is I want to eat your
- 43:03pancreas. Yeah.
- 43:06So. And it has to be a step up from
- 43:08that. Yeah.
- 43:09Hopefully no one. Dies.
- 43:12Hopefully no one dies or has a creepy moment in the hotel room.
- 43:15Fingers crossed. We'll find out.
- 43:21We'll find out next week and I thought of a challenge if you're
- 43:23up for it. OK.
- 43:26So I think we should both create a short video plugging a choice
- 43:34for next week and whoever gets the most like on Across Fin,
- 43:39Facebook and Instagram wins. OK, so.
- 43:43Sounds good. Friday now with deadline for
- 43:47releasing them is Monday, Yeah, we'll post them from the same
- 43:51account so nobody can tell who's this who.
- 43:54Yeah, except for if we might actually be in them, but that's
- 43:58OK. Yeah, it's probably going to be
- 44:01obvious, but yeah. Maybe we'll wear wigs.
- 44:12Yeah, yeah. But go, so like, go to Facebook,
- 44:14go to Instagram, go to both. If you want to help us rig this,
- 44:17rig the results and we'll post and we won't, and we'll do it 5
- 44:22minutes apart and we won't say when we're going to do it.
- 44:24So we'll kind of leave it a bit organic.
- 44:26But so keep an eye out, make sure you've joined, make sure
- 44:29you've got notifications on so that you can keep up to date and
- 44:34help decide who wins next week. Yeah, yeah, cool.
- 44:43You've just won. Anyway, thank you all so much.
- 44:49And thank you so much for the chat.
- 44:50And also, yeah, Mama didn't need a new pair of shoes, but looks
- 44:53like she's going to have to walk to the bar barefooted.
- 44:57We'll see you again next week for bartenders and life stories.
- 45:01Until then, look after yourselves.
- 45:04Love you. Bye.
- 45:04Bye.
