- 0:05SPEAKER_00: All right, Paul, you ready?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Uh hold on.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, I'm ready.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the 2025 edition of Humanity Working.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Existing listeners might notice that uh everything looks and sounds a bit different.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: So uh what's changing, Paul?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, quite a lot, actually.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So for people that are new or who haven't listened to us for a while, we use Humanity Working to explore the human capabilities that people need to thrive as work is evolving.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And until now it's been like kind of infrequent.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: We've just been doing interviews.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: But now we're gonna go uh weekly.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Uh we're gonna have new pods dropping every Tuesday.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Um, and you'll be able to get it wherever you get your podcasts.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Probably the easiest way is just to go to humanityworking.net, um, which is our substack, and you'll get both this and our newsletter.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: But like I say, you can get it anywhere you get podcasts.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But also, uh the main pod is gonna be short form.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So 10 minutes or less, uh, just like this one.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Uh in it, it's gonna be you and me, Matt, and uh we're gonna be really practical.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So, what we've learned, uh, what it means for our listeners.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And we'll do that every Tuesday.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: We're also gonna have occasional interviews, though, because a lot of you said how much you love the interviews, and we don't want to cut those down.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So those are gonna be as long or longer than they always were.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So uh we're gonna be really, really careful in how we curate those, but expect to hear from some really terrific experts about human potential in the workplace.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: We've got quite a few lined up for this year that are gonna be great.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so so what's it gonna look like for the listener or the the viewer now?
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so like if you're the listeners to this podcast, I want you to, whether you are or whether you are not, we've got a few CEOs who listen to this podcast, but imagine that you are a CEO, if you like.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: You could be a CEO of a company, CEO of your family, or maybe just CEO of your own life.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Um but the interesting thing about CEOs is that when you go to present to CEOs, you typically got like 10 minutes of their time if you're lucky.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And you've got that 10 minutes of your time to convince the CEO that something is really important, what they should do about it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And after that 10 minutes, they're they're throwing you out of the office.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So you've got to use that 10 minutes to be really effective.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And so you're the CEO, if you're the listener of this podcast, and then I'm I, you and I, Matt, are presenting to you in that period of time, and we're gonna get you everything that you need and get out of your hair really quickly.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: We can do it in seven minutes, we'll do it in seven minutes, but we'll do it in less than 10 minutes.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So the 10 minutes itself is gonna break down into um what is the thing?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Why should I care about it?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Um, what practically can I do to make a difference in my own life and those of others?
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so same themes, same ideas, exploring the same same ideas, but just in a different uh different format based on what you've learned, yeah?
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, my day job is running billion mines.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Uh and in that company, we work with thousands of people to help them be the most effective humans they can be as work evolved.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So we're bringing our findings from that um and from all the research that we do associated with it.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: But anything that is related to helping humans be relevant as work transforms is fair game.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna be cutting to the chase much more quickly, sharing our findings, sharing the findings of uh of other people and what it means for you as an individual, for other teams you're in, and for the organizations you're in.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: So it's a significant change.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Why are we why are we doing this?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Why, why, why this idea?
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: I can let's take us through that real quick.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Well, it really came actually from our findings at Billion Minds, right?
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: We realize that how information is delivered to people is hugely important when it comes to taking it in.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Um simply put, right, the shorter it is, the more likely the people that are consuming it are actually not just going to be able to take in that information, but act upon that information.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And in the work we've done there, we've got a ton of practical findings that people could benefit from if only they were hearing it.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Um so we don't want that information to only be available to people who buy stuff from us, right?
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: This allows us to be able to get all that information out to people.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And, you know, to be fair, like getting all this information into 10 minutes is quite difficult.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: But if we're doing more of the work on the front end and condensing it down, then we're gonna take up less of people's time and be more useful for them.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: So what you can't explain quickly, you don't understand well enough kind of concept baked in as well.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Um, which is interesting because you know, long form is in some of the most popular podcasts, Rogan, Huberman, uh, all these all these podcasts, two, three hours.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: We know people have the attention span.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Uh so you know, what do you think about that?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah in contrast.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Like, why are we swimming left when everybody else is swimming right, you know, that kind of thing.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: I yeah, it's it's interesting.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I I I think I think everybody's got sucked in a bit by that, right?
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: The Joe Rogan pop podcast is incredibly popular, whether you like him or not, it it is.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Uh Diary of a CEO is very long form, incredibly popular, Human One, really popular as well.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: And all of these are like super long form.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: And one of the things that we've noticed as we've experimented with long form and and short form stuff, is that it's quite I I don't wanna I don't want to talk these other uh these other podcasts down, but it's quite easy to do long form.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And the reason it's easy to do long form is you can literally just you know start things recording and start rambling.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And if you know stuff, right, if you know how to do it, if you know the mechanism of it, um, then it's relatively easy to do.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And then you can break it up and you can put it into a whole bunch of different formats that are really that are really short form, et cetera, et cetera.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: It's harder to do, it's harder to do the short form and get everything in that you that you need to get in.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Um but also for the user, it's kind of fun too, because you can just like have it on in the background and it's like radio, you can tune in or tune out as you do.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Um, but that's a different goal, right?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Our goal is not to have people on in the background, right?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, or have have us on in the background.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Our goal is for people to listen to us and do something about what they hear.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And so this gives us the opportunity to be able to do that.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So nothing wrong with long form, but it's serving a different kind of purpose.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's pretty fascinating.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: And you know, the good thing about podcasts is they're they're there when you want them.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: You can start and stop them.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: It's not a live thing.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So you have to have the choice, I think, is really powerful.
- 6:54unknown: Yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And if you want to listen to an hour, just line up six of these episodes and you got it, right?
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: You got your hour.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: So you're promising something practical in every episode.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: What do we got here on this one?
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so um as we're thinking about how we structure this, I think I'd encourage you as a listener to think about how you're structuring your listening.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: So there's nothing wrong with listening to an informative three-hour pod, and that's, you know, uh better than many alternatives, but are you really listening to it?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: If you got two hours a day to listen to pods, how are you going to use that time?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: So I'd suggest, like today or sometime soon, take 30 minutes, do like a podcast audit.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Go through your feed, find the podcast that educate and entertain, inform you, get the best examples of those lined up for the week.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And for the educational ones, judge them just not by who the host is, how popular they are, but what are you recalling?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: What are you doing differently?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, it's just noise.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: So, you know, and of course put us, put us in your feed too.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, hopefully we can be part of that feed that is um helping, giving you something you can work differently on and act differently on.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: How much time do we have left?
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Uh what do we got?
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Uh two minutes left.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Should we get out of people's hair?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Well, I yes, but I was just thinking it'd be really interesting to think about the way this podcast fits in to uh life and what your big goal is.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: If somebody's just picking this up for the first time and they don't know what humanity working is and what the big, big goal of of this is, uh maybe summarize that really quick and say how the micro learning has has uh engaged, changed your thinking.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: So I think the big I think the big goal that everybody needs to be concerned about right now as the world of work is changing, is um how are you going to maximize the human potential that you have within you to be valuable and useful as work evolves, as technology evolves, and as life evolves.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: And what we found, and something we'll go into in some of these uh future episodes, is that that requires different ways of learning, different ways of skill building, different things to focus on than traditionally you have done.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And so as we go through some of these future episodes, we'll be honing in and focusing in on some of those specific things.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Very cool.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Well, we did it.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: We did it.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Experiment worked, at least, at least in the first instance.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So we'll uh we'll see how it goes with the next few episodes, and we hope everybody will enjoy it.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: See you next time.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: See ya.
