- 1:14What is next for the mcu?
- 1:17Is Brand New Day, the best in the Spider man movie saga or where does it rank?
- 1:22We are Systematic Ecology.
- 1:24We're the priest of the geeks, and we are here to talk about all things Spider Man.
- 1:28Brand New Day.
- 1:28We're talking about San Diego Comic Con.
- 1:31A lot to cover tonight and we have a full team to do it.
- 1:35So I'm really excited to be here with a full team of my co hosts.
- 1:40I am Kevin Schaefer and I am here with Evan Garcia, Andy Walsh, Justin Coleman, and Joshua Noel.
- 1:48We have the.
- 1:48The whole squad here tonight.
- 1:50Good to see you guys.
- 1:51This is going to be blast.
- 1:52Yeah, man.
- 1:52Can't wait.
- 1:53Good stuff.
- 1:53So, yeah, this is simple.
- 1:55Geek college is simple.
- 1:57I know.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:57Like, I know we need like, like some kind of code sign or something.
- 2:03Language.
- 2:04Language.
- 2:04Yeah.
- 2:05I love it.
- 2:05Perfect.
- 2:06I love it.
- 2:06But yeah.
- 2:07Well, for our.
- 2:08If you're watching on YouTube or you're listening wherever you get your podcast, thanks for joining us.
- 2:14This is one of our what's News episodes where we talk about all the latest things in geek culture.
- 2:19And as I said, we've got a lot to cover tonight, but let's go ahead and get to our lightning round first.
- 2:26I will have to keep this one quick because again, a lot of things talk about.
- 2:30But Joshua, let's start with you.
- 2:32What's one thing you've been geeking out on, man?
- 2:36So Lightning round.
- 2:38I don't know.
- 2:39Some.
- 2:39Some weird ones if we're trying to keep it.
- 2:41What's new?
- 2:42Lightning Round.
- 2:44I meant a lot of time for like, TV shows and stuff lately because Job's been crazy.
- 2:48But the Adventure Time Pride special, I finally got to read the PB and Marcy's Infinite Mixtape comic.
- 2:55Amazing.
- 2:56That was great.
- 2:56And of course, you know, Godzilla conquers the multiverse.
- 2:59I think I mentioned that on another episode.
- 3:00That comic around and Dr.
- 3:03Doom leading this ragtag bunch against God, you know, Symbiote Godzilla thing.
- 3:09Yeah, I'm.
- 3:10You know, it's just comic crazy weirdness that I, I'm just.
- 3:14I'm loving it.
- 3:15I can't think of anything else too.
- 3:16I mean, obviously there's the Kingdom Hearts stuff I've mentioned on other episodes.
- 3:19We got that trailer and we know that D23 is going to have a big thing coming up in a couple weeks that I am beyond excited for.
- 3:24Yeah, yeah, I know you love Kingdom Hearts, so that's exciting to see.
- 3:28I got this.
- 3:29They have a lot of new merch because the 25th anniversary is coming out and the fourth game is finally announced.
- 3:33And I have this little glass figure, Heartless Shadow.
- 3:36This is like my favorite collectible of all time now, I think so.
- 3:39Cool.
- 3:39Does look beautiful.
- 3:40Yeah, it's just nice.
- 3:42Yeah, I love it.
- 3:42I love it.
- 3:43Awesome.
- 3:44Justin, what about you?
- 3:45You know, I'm such a meat and potatoes fandom guy.
- 3:48So I am Batman, Caped crusader.
- 3:51Yes.
- 3:52So good.
- 3:54Leveled up on this second season, I think.
- 3:57And then of course, X Men 97.
- 4:01Oh, my goodness.
- 4:02Every week giving me something beautiful.
- 4:05So, yeah, those two.
- 4:06We've got to do a full episode on x Men 97 this season once it's over.
- 4:10We talked some about it on other episodes, but I.
- 4:13Well, we need Andy on that.
- 4:14We need you.
- 4:15So I guess there's so much to cover there.
- 4:17But Cape Crusader.
- 4:18I'm glad you brought it up because.
- 4:19So when Christian and I did our initial review of Brand New Day the other night, he brought it up and he was not as impressed with season two.
- 4:27And I, like, I hadn't started at that point because I didn't get a chance for the weekend.
- 4:30I started it since and I'm loving it.
- 4:32So I.
- 4:33I know.
- 4:33Yeah.
- 4:34So we're going to have to clash there.
- 4:37Like, not that I don't respect his opinions, but I was.
- 4:40I'm like, what are.
- 4:41What.
- 4:41What.
- 4:41See, I'm missing here because I'm.
- 4:43This is fantastic.
- 4:44Oh, it's so good.
- 4:45Yeah.
- 4:46Great.
- 4:46Clash of the Geeks.
- 4:47I know.
- 4:48Oh, it's coming, it's coming.
- 4:49We gotta make it happen.
- 4:50But yeah.
- 4:51Andy, what about you?
- 4:52Yeah, I'll say.
- 4:53I think we.
- 4:54Hopefully D23 will bring us some X Men MCU news since there was none at Comic Con.
- 4:59So let's hope for that.
- 5:00And we can do tie that in with X Men 97, which I am also enjoying.
- 5:03But I will use my lightning round privilege to sneak in my thoughts about the Odyssey while we're at it.
- 5:08Since there's plenty of lightning and thunder in the Odyssey and mostly, oh, good climb mostly.
- 5:14You know, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the discourse.
- 5:19I've been listening to a lot of the Bible for Normal people podcasts lately, and so I think that's skewing my, like, how we approach mythology and retell stories for the present moment and so forth.
- 5:30And so seeing all this, you know, conversation about is the.
- 5:32Is it a faithful translation of the.
- 5:35Of the homeric text?
- 5:37You know, I think if that's the.
- 5:39What you're looking for from the film and the answer is clearly a resounding no, it is not an attempt to bring that story as told to the screen.
- 5:47But it felt fairly obvious to me that it was.
- 5:49It was attempting to use a retelling of an ancient story to comment on the present day.
- 5:55And to that extent, I thought it was very successful.
- 5:57And what particularly struck me, which it will strike no one else in this particular way.
- 6:02But I thought that, you know, the Trojan War reflection at the end, are we the bad guys?
- 6:07Realization that Odysseus has about the cost of breaking the social contract to achieve our militaristic goals made me think of a true story that I don't think has been told enough about how our search for and desire to
- 6:30bring justice and.
- 6:32Or retribution to Osama bin Laden cost us the opportunity to eradicate polio from the world as part.
- 6:39And this is, you can see, you know, this has been documented in various news articles.
- 6:44You can see this dramatized in Zero Dark Thirty, the.
- 6:47The movie about the hunt for Osama bin Laden.
- 6:50The.
- 6:50At one point the, you know, operatives disguised themselves as health.
- 6:56Health workers to get into the compound where they believe Osama bin Laden is.
- 7:00That had the consequence of eroding trust in the healthcare workers who in the region of Pakistan who at that time were carrying out a vaccination campaign to try to eliminate the last few cases of polio that were on
- 7:12the earth at that time were restricted to small parts of Pakistan.
- 7:16And so vaccination acceptance went way down.
- 7:20Polio cases went up.
- 7:21It has since gone up in other parts of the world as well.
- 7:24And so we had a moment where we could have eradicated polio will take a lot more work to get back to if we will ever get to that point again.
- 7:30But we had that opportunity and we lost it.
- 7:32And so that struck me as just a very concrete, specific example of exactly the kind of, you know, consequences of, you know, deception and pursuit of retributive goals at all costs.
- 7:45So I'm sorry if that's.
- 7:47I know that's a little bit of a bummer on our.
- 7:48On our fungi podcast, but that was.
- 7:50I had no other outlet for those thoughts on the Odyssey, so thank you for indulging.
- 7:54You said something.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:55Hey, we're talking about a depressed spider man tonight, so I think it's not all fun and games, but no, Me, Evan and Joel did an initial review of the Odyssey a couple weeks ago.
- 8:08And like, by the time we were done, we're like, we still need another three hours here, so we're going to be doing more but oh, Andy, I don't know.
- 8:16I always love when you come on because I get like a mini either science or history lesson in the like just you know, like improvised there.
- 8:25So it's wonderful.
- 8:26But I'll send you, I don't know if you read Ezra Klein's column about it that went out this week that was really good too.
- 8:34Relating it to some of the like right wing backlash to it and connecting it to and what it the movie actually says and how and relating it to the original text.
- 8:47But yeah, don't believe I have.
- 8:49So I'd be happy to receive.
- 8:50Thank you.
- 8:50I'll send that.
- 8:51Yeah, yeah.
- 8:51Excellent.
- 8:52But yeah, awesome.
- 8:53And Evan, last but not least.
- 8:54What else are you Deacon out on here?
- 8:57Sure.
- 8:57So we are watching, my wife and I.
- 9:01We are since there's no true like a timeline for it, we're just kind of picking and choosing some random MCU films that we think are going to be kind of important before doomsday because there's clearly no, you know,
- 9:17it's just going to be one big retcon.
- 9:19So then we will go back and then we will do the, the on the, the rewatch.
- 9:26So but other than that, I'm watching your friendly Neighborhood Spider Man.
- 9:32That is a fun little series.
- 9:34It's really cool.
- 9:35And I saw with my daughter, she's into horror films right now and, and this is a film that I would probably, I would like to get probably some people on to talk about because of its themes.
- 9:47But it's mid summer.
- 9:49I thought that was, that was a very powerful, a powerful film to say the least.
- 9:55So.
- 9:56Yeah, yeah, no, I, I was a.
- 9:58We are just spoiled with superhero animation right now because between Batman, Caped Crusader, my Adventures of Superman, X Men 97 and then your friendly nightmare neighborhood Spider man season two is coming up.
- 10:09It's just like, yeah, I like Justin.
- 10:11It's my meat and potatoes.
- 10:13I'm happy as can be.
- 10:14So that's where I'm at too.
- 10:15Awesome.
- 10:16Well and for our listeners, viewers out there, again, thank you so much for joining us tonight.

- 10:42It really helps us out.
- 10:43And again, if you want to check out our merch store, follow us on social media any of that, just click on the links there.
- 10:50And again, thank you so much.
- 10:51Whether you're.
- 10:52This is your first time or you're a regular listener, viewer, we really appreciate it.
- 10:57Well, guys, let's get into the main topics here.
- 10:59So, um.
- 11:01Oh, here we go.
- 11:02So San Diego Comic Con, obviously, the.
- 11:05One of the biggest pop culture events of the year, just wrapped up a couple weeks ago, actually.
- 11:10Justin and I were at GalaxyCon Raleigh that weekend.
- 11:14So not, you know, in the heart of, like, everything going on, but still, really fun convention.
- 11:19We got to meet Ralph Macchio.
- 11:21That was a blast.
- 11:22But SDC this year was pretty dominated by Marvel.
- 11:27They did their usual Hall H panel, and they had some really cool announcements here, so we just kind of wanted to break some of these down.
- 11:35Let's start first with a Ghost Rider movie was announced for 2028 with Ryan Gosling, who has been rumored to play the character for a long time now.
- 11:46There were, you know, there was speculation of that, really, the past few years, they thought both him and they have a director in Shawn Levy.
- 11:54Um, which I guess right when this was announced, there was the.
- 11:57Okay, please don't, you know, do a blade here and announce an actor and a.
- 12:03And a character without actually following through.
- 12:05This gives me hope that they've got a director on board who is very much like.
- 12:10I mean, is proven.
- 12:12He made Deadpool and Wolverine.
- 12:13He was Stranger Things, director, producer.
- 12:16And then he has Star Wars Starfighter coming out next year, so he has a really good track record.
- 12:22So I'm optimistic here.
- 12:23What do you guys think about this, though?
- 12:25Like, I mean, a.
- 12:26The character in your background and your level of excitement for this, which will come out post Secret Wars.
- 12:32I mean, I have a bad opinion.
- 12:34If we want to start with a.
- 12:35Bad opinion, start with a downer here.
- 12:38Tasha.
- 12:38Yeah, I dislike any.
- 12:40Pretty much everything about Stranger Things, so someone from Stranger Things automatically has me kind of like, oh, no.
- 12:45Then it's a character who.
- 12:47An actor who's obviously not going to be Robbie Reyes.
- 12:49And I'm like, that's the ghostwriter I wanted.
- 12:52So I'm already kind of checked out a little bit, and Ryan Gosling is just overrated.
- 12:56And I'm like, you know, I like Ghost Rider.
- 12:58So I'm like, maybe you'll pull out.
- 13:01I'm still gonna go see it.
- 13:02Because the last few MCU movies I've seen, I've actually really enjoyed.
- 13:05But all in all, I'm like, man, that was a disappointing announcement for me.
- 13:08Yeah, okay, never mind, Doc.
- 13:10Ben.
- 13:10Sorry, sorry.
- 13:11I already invited you here?
- 13:13Yeah, I'll just check out.
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:16Between Stranger Things and then Ryan Gosling, Overrated.
- 13:19I'm like, okay, but yeah, but hey,.
- 13:20We, we are, we no, don't dislike Ryan Gosling.
- 13:24Like, he was good in the, that last sci fi movie that I can't remember the name of.
- 13:29I enjoyed that.
- 13:29Yeah, like that was good.
- 13:31Just overall when I see him I'm like, eh, the other Ryan's were better.
- 13:34You know, I've been hyping that movie for two years for you.
- 13:37How can you not have it?
- 13:38Right.
- 13:39I've worked several 12 hour days in a row.
- 13:42Okay.
- 13:44So I, I'll say this one.
- 13:48I love the character and Ghost Rider comes on the scene and when you're dealing with that kind of getting the mystical powers and you just never know how it's going to go in a fight.
- 14:02I mean I'm, you know, I want to see Ghost Rider fight Doctor Doom.
- 14:05Right.
- 14:06You know, it's these kinds of things because it adds an element of I think surprise in the stories that Ghost Rider ends up in.
- 14:16Gosling as Ghost Rider, Goney has such a, has a, that Christian Helmsworth way of doing comedy and just every single thing he does.
- 14:32And so I'm interested to see how that works.
- 14:36I feel like it's going to be.
- 14:37Kind of a, kind of a Thor like, like character just in the, in the move between comedy and seriousness.
- 14:47I'm a little, I'm a little concerned about that.
- 14:50A little bit.
- 14:51A little bit.
- 14:51But I am excited to see the character on the big screen in a non, you know, Nick Cage way.
- 15:02So let's, let's see how it goes.
- 15:04Those are big shoes to fill.
- 15:05I think they're, they are shoes to fill.
- 15:10Listen, listen, I'll say the Nicholas Cage Ghost Rider movies, terrible Ghost Rider movies.
- 15:15Awesome movies.
- 15:18Yeah.
- 15:18And I, I remember seeing that one in middle school and I'm like, this is awesome.
- 15:22So.
- 15:22I know, I mean, but yeah, I kind of.
- 15:25No, Justin, thank you for a good opinion here.
- 15:28Yeah, but, but no, I like, I'm excited at the prospect of something like Midnight Suns, you know, tapping to this like darker layer of the Marvel universe and, and also do it like returning to kind of in a
- 15:43post Secret wars world where we're away from the multiverse, getting back to more roots of kind of cool characters where they can have more light directors kind of do what they want.
- 15:56And again, I think John Levy, because he has a good track record like, and him and Ryan Gosling are doing Star Wars, Starfighter together, which I'M very excited for.
- 16:05I am excited to see that collaboration.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:08Admittedly, I haven't read, like, found a ghostwriter comics or anything, but.
- 16:12But yeah, I mean, I love characters like Blade and I mean, I said, so I want to see more of this, but yeah.
- 16:19Oh, God, no.
- 16:21I was going to say I got probably a bad opinion, but one thing that does have me excited that you guys kind of are touching on, like, I love supernatural parts of Marvel and like, I know, like, not
- 16:30everybody loved Ironheart.
- 16:31I thought Ironheart was a really good show.
- 16:33And the guy they had playing Mephisto, if they bring him into the picture, I think that could get me excited again.
- 16:38And if they lead this kind of into, like, they do Strange Academy, that's what, you know.
- 16:43Scotty Young's my favorite comic writer.
- 16:45So I, Yeah, I could get on board if they.
- 16:47They start teasing some of that Mephisto.
- 16:49I think they're definitely bringing back, like, it was a.
- 16:51It was an interesting one to enjoy.
- 16:52I was not expecting him to be introduced in Ironheart.
- 16:56I just thought he would have been to do it in a movie or something.
- 16:58But.
- 16:59But I think, yeah, no, I mean, it would be good to bring him back.
- 17:02I was going to say one more thing, so one thing I am interested to see.
- 17:05You know, there's that bit in Ghost Rider where they.
- 17:11So he not only had the spirit of vengeance, but also got cosmic powers.
- 17:18I mean, so it's like the O O P version of Ghost Rider.
- 17:24That would be.
- 17:25That could be fun to see at a certain point.
- 17:29Just to see what they.
- 17:30They do with it.
- 17:31So that's all I was going to say.
- 17:33No, I.
- 17:33There's a lot of possibilities.
- 17:35I'm excited.
- 17:36And.
- 17:36And again, like in it with.
- 17:38Once they're past all the multiverse stuff, I feel like they're going to have more freedom.
- 17:41Right.
- 17:42Speaking of, Andy, I want to check in with you because after you had to hear, you know, Project Hail Mary being called that sci fi movie.
- 17:48But I want to hear from you about.
- 17:50I am sorry.
- 17:51No, no, I.
- 17:52It's all in.
- 17:54Good chest.
- 17:56Yeah.
- 17:56So I will refer the reader to films such as Drive or the Place beyond the Pines.
- 18:03If you're uncertain that Ryan Gosling can deliver a more serious and stoic performance.
- 18:08Who knows what the script and Shawn Levy will actually ask of him, but he's definitely capable of doing that.
- 18:15And if we're going to have cosmic Ghost Rider, then we need John Bernthal because that's.
- 18:18That's Frank Castle.
- 18:19So who knows what that could Bring for us.
- 18:22That is an interesting thought of Frank Castle now or Jon Bernthal in that kind of role.
- 18:27But yeah, hype for Ryan Gosling getting to do a thing that Ryan Gosling is himself hyped to do.
- 18:32That's always good.
- 18:33I'm fairly Ghost Rider ambivalent.
- 18:35But if we're going to do Ghost Rider and if we're having actors do characters and stories that they've always wanted to do.
- 18:42My first introduction to Ghost Rider was X Men 8 or 9.
- 18:47You know, the second relaunch of X Men.
- 18:50The adjectives title they were Ghost Rider shows up in New Orleans because there's the Brood and New Orleans and the Thieves Guild and all that kind of stuff.
- 19:00So we need a Channing Tatum gambit.
- 19:04Ryan Gosling Ghost Rider team up movie.
- 19:06Yes, please.
- 19:08Yeah, never going to happen.
- 19:10But you know, you can allow me to have my, my dream until proven otherwise.
- 19:14Um, but you know, you know, should it.
- 19:17It should have been.
- 19:18Should have been a Shang Tu2 announcement.
- 19:19It should have been a Young Avengers announcement that I'm still holding out for the hope that they will fulfill the promise that they made in the post credits of the Marvels.
- 19:29I am probably the one of about 12 people who's waiting for that.
- 19:33But I'm with you.
- 19:34They.
- 19:34They made a promise to me.
- 19:35I made an embarrassingly loud excitement noise when in the theater when that came on screen and I realized what was happening, that they were redoing the, the Iron man one shtick.
- 19:47And so yeah, to cover for my embarrassment in front of the, you know, six other people that were at that screening of the Marvels, please, please make a Young Avengers movie.
- 19:56But yeah, I'm happy for Ghost Rider fans to get a Ghost Rider movie and happy for Ryan Gosling to be able to.
- 20:02To live out a lifelong dream.
- 20:04So let's hope that that shows that that comes across on screen.
- 20:07I would not know your excitement well, Eddie.
- 20:09I would not kill.
- 20:10Lose all hope there because I really think they're going to do like it'll be a weird place to do it, but I really think Young Avengers is going to play a big part in Secret wars because like Doomsday,
- 20:20I think it's going to be a bloodbath and also like the multiverses.
- 20:23Right.
- 20:23I think it's very much going to lean into the younger heroes are going to have to step up in Secret Wars.
- 20:29I don't know how exactly, but that's what I'm leaning toward.
- 20:33From your lips to the Rooster Brothers ears.
- 20:35Yeah.
- 20:36Because you know if it takes much longer that they're just going to be the Avengers.
- 20:39I know.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:41Thank you.
- 20:41Bravo.
- 20:44Crazy.
- 20:45Oh, and also another great Ryan Gosling performance as, like, great action hero.
- 20:50And like, so later, under 2049, he's.
- 20:52Phenomenal in that excellent comedy on the, with.
- 20:55With Harrison Ford on the interview circuit for that film.
- 20:58But not, not on this.
- 21:00Screams.
- 21:00Yeah, yeah.
- 21:02Awesome.
- 21:02Evan, any thoughts on Ghost Rider?
- 21:05Thoughts?
- 21:05I'm not, I'm not too familiar with the character beyond the Nicholas Cage stuff.
- 21:12And my question is, am I wrong or did Agent Coulson play him for some part or something like that?
- 21:20There was a thing in agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- 21:22Which is only pseudo canon, so it's not really canon.
- 21:26And that was, I believe, Robbie Ray's.
- 21:28I think that was the Ghost Rider that I like and like.
- 21:30I love both Ghost Riders, but newer ones just gotten more popularity.
- 21:34Need to be completely transparent.
- 21:36I am hyper fixated on Marvel's Midnight Sun's video game, and Robbie Rays and Spider man hang out a lot and we fix cars together.
- 21:43And I'm like, I want this on the screen.
- 21:46I don't care about that other stuff.
- 21:47But that's really.
- 21:48I think that's where I biased.
- 21:50No, that's fair, though.
- 21:50It was Gabriel Luna, I think, played him in that.
- 21:53Oh, yeah.
- 21:54And he was great.
- 21:55It's also memes or something where, where, where, where Coulson had had his skull on fire and stuff like that, so.
- 22:02I was like, wait, what?
- 22:03Maybe it's been a long time since I've seen that.
- 22:05I never finished that.
- 22:06Confident on that.
- 22:07Yeah, no, I, I, I know.
- 22:09I remember what you're talking about.
- 22:10Evan and I.
- 22:12I watched the same short clip of it and not the whole episode.
- 22:17Yeah.
- 22:17Yeah.
- 22:17Okay.
- 22:18Okay.
- 22:18Can't wait to see it.
- 22:19Sean Levy is the most.
- 22:22He's the most vanilla director there is.
- 22:24And I say that in a good way.
- 22:27Like, he knows how to, how to please an audience, so he's a crowd.
- 24:01Pleaser and he gets stuff done.
- 24:02Like, when a Don Ivey movie gets announced, there is a very.
- 24:06He's efficient.
- 24:07There's a very low chance that it'll get canceled.
- 24:10Like where?
- 24:10Like, because, like, you know, they keep announcing.
- 24:13I mean, think of all the, like, Star Wars, DC Marvel projects they've announced over the past 10 years or more that never came to fruition.
- 24:20I don't worry about that with Levy, because, yes, he, I mean, I mean, yeah, I wouldn't consider him, like, on a tour kind of thing, like a Matt Reeves or something.
- 24:29And that's fine.
- 24:30But he knows how to deliver crowd pleasing, entertaining, and he will get them done.
- 24:34Yeah, yeah.
- 24:35And he also, I mean, he directed some of my favorite episodes of Stranger Things, like, because he's there from the beginning, like a season four.
- 24:43The one like with Max Brain, like, that one is phenomenal.
- 24:46So.
- 24:46Yeah.
- 24:47But yeah, cool.
- 24:48Very cool.
- 24:48Well, the other big announcement was we already Knew Black Panther 3 was happening, but they.
- 24:58They announced the official successor to t' Challa to Dad with Plesman.
- 25:04They introduced t' Challa's son at the very end of Black Panther Wakanda Forever.
- 25:09And now they announced that it's David Johnson.
- 25:14Actually.
- 25:14Evan, can you check me on that?
- 25:15I just want to get the name right because.
- 25:17Yes.
- 25:17All right, cool.
- 25:18Because, like, I saw him recently in the Long Walk and he was amazing.
- 25:21Um, so I was very excited about this news.
- 25:22But he will be playing t' Challa son as the new Black Panther, which, I mean, I love this news.
- 25:30I mean, I think like it also.
- 25:31I mean, yes, he was a kid at the end of Wakanda Forever, but we kind of know there's going to be a lot of time jump stuff and multiverse shenanigans post Secret wars.
- 25:41So I'm totally fine with them doing a time jump here because that actor is like, I mean, he looks younger than he's like in his 30s, but because he played a teenager in the Long Walk, so I thought
- 25:54he was much younger.
- 25:55But still he's me playing an adult.
- 25:58The new Black Panther.
- 25:59I think this is great.
- 26:00I mean, I like you know when.
- 26:03And of course Ryan Coogler is coming back for it.
- 26:05We're into that.
- 26:06We also know Denzel Washington is going to be in it for undisposed role yet.
- 26:11Yeah, like that's been confirmed.
- 26:13Or like.
- 26:14Well, I be.
- 26:15Which that because there were everyone at Comic Con was wondering if they were gonna bring him.
- 26:20They were like, is dental here?
- 26:21Is dental?
- 26:21Yeah, because like they knew it was gonna be in it, but they didn't have him there.
- 26:25But yes, he's already signed on for it.
- 26:29They haven't renounced the role yet.
- 26:31But I.
- 26:31Yeah, I mean, but this will also be in 2028.
- 26:36So post secret Wars.
- 26:37But yeah, I mean, limited knowledge about the story.
- 26:41But I mean, at this point, if I see Ryan Coogler's name on anything, you don't have to sell me at all.
- 26:47Like, I'm there.
- 26:48But.
- 26:49But of course, of course.
- 26:50With his, you know, signature character, signature trilogy.
- 26:54So this I'm very excited about again, I.
- 26:56The Long Walk.
- 26:56I finally watched recently.
- 26:58Phenomenal movie, extremely depressing.
- 27:00But like, David Johnson and Cooper Hoffman both give terrific lead performances.
- 27:05So I'm really excited for what this actor has in store.
- 27:09Yeah, it's gonna be.
- 27:11It's gonna be really fun, I think.
- 27:14And I'm looking forward to this Black Panther equalizer crossover with Denzel Washington.
- 27:23Just kidding.
- 27:23Just Book of Eli, maybe Eli Gravel.
- 27:26Literally, every time I hear his name, I'm like, man, I need to watch Book of Eli again.
- 27:30And I just don't yield on to that thought until I see it.
- 27:33So.
- 27:34No, but this is.
- 27:35This is good.
- 27:35This is.
- 27:36This is the kind of movie that I.
- 27:41I've been looking for, my kids have been looking forward to.
- 27:43I mean, I still remember the day Chadwick Boseman passed away and the kids took the Black Panther toy that we had and laid down on the bed and, like, there was a.
- 27:55There's weeping.
- 27:56I mean, it was a hard.
- 27:57It was a hard day.
- 27:58And.
- 27:59And so since then, this question of, like, how are we going to.
- 28:02Are we going to get this back on track?
- 28:05And we want to see t' Challa again in some kind of way, but how can you do that in a way that honors Chadwick Boseman?
- 28:11And I think this is a great way to do it, T' Challa Jr.
- 28:15And.
- 28:17And so we'll see how it goes again.
- 28:19I think the actor is great for it and hopefully is going to bring back some of the spirit of what.
- 28:29Of what it meant to Black Panther.
- 28:31The first movie meant to so many people.
- 28:33Wakanda Forever.
- 28:35Yeah, Wakanda Forever.
- 28:37All right, so I didn't care for Wakanda Forever, the movie personally, but I think it went to do with a couple biases.
- 28:43Is like, I.
- 28:44I didn't, like, I kind of knew where they were going with, like, Namor and all that, and I'm like, I don't.
- 28:48I like the comic book version.
- 28:49Why are we changing things?
- 28:50And I'm like an old grumpy man.
- 28:52And then also see if I see the name right.
- 28:55Leticia Michelle Wright.
- 28:57Is that right?
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:58Okay.
- 28:58That actor who was coming into the Black Panther is portrayed as a scientist.
- 29:03And I'm sure Andy can probably build off of this, but during the COVID stuff, she kind of voiced her opinion as, you know, an anti vaxxer, but, like, not directly.
- 29:12And she kind of backtracked a little bit, but I'm guessing Disney kind of forced her to it.
- 29:16Just like everything she said around that made me really uncomfortable watching her as a scientist.
- 29:20On the big screen.
- 29:21And then I think that really shaded how I viewed that movie as much as I wanted to watch it without any bias.
- 29:27It's kind of hard to do that, especially when I know some of the people who are affected pretty drastically by, you know, COVID 19.
- 29:34So I think it just really made it hard for me to watch that.
- 29:37I don't know anything about this new actor.
- 29:38Don't have any opinions about him.
- 29:41Maybe this is mean, but I'm just excited we're getting away from.
- 29:43From Leticia.
- 29:45Like, I'm, Like, I.
- 29:46I'm just still upset about that.
- 29:47And I don't know, maybe I'm holding a grudge too long, but that's where I'm at.
- 29:51I do remember all that stuff.
- 29:53And honestly, I think even without that, I don't know that she was ever meant to be the permanent successor.
- 29:59Like, I.
- 30:00I think it worked well for Wakanda forever.
- 30:02And, like, you know, she means a lot to the story.
- 30:05Like, Shuri is as a character means it.
- 30:07But I think they were still going to do something, whether it was going to eventually recast t' Challa or.
- 30:13I mean, in this case, I think it's the perfect way, you know, have a son, take up the mantle.
- 30:17I think she was.
- 30:18I don't want to say, like, placeholder kind of thing, but, like.
- 30:21But it was more of a waste, temporary.
- 30:23Kind of like, they both, like.
- 30:24And then she wasn't always going to be in that role, and I don't think that was.
- 30:28But.
- 30:28But I do remember the cut versus with the actor at that time.
- 30:33Yeah, that's the other problem, too, I guess, is, like, I don't know if anyone has the same gravita as, like, Chadwick Boseman.
- 30:40He was.
- 30:40But I literally.
- 30:41And this, you know, I brag about this a lot, especially to my brother, because I throw up in his face.
- 30:45We were watching the movie 42, and during the credits, like, Sue's credit throw, I looked at my brother and said, that man's gonna be Black Panther.
- 30:52And my brother looked me back in the face and goes, josh, they're never going to make a Black Panther movie.
- 30:57Matt, that's for you.
- 30:58I see you have some opinion.
- 31:01That's pretty cool, though.
- 31:02Yeah.
- 31:03But, yeah, no, it.
- 31:05I mean.
- 31:06And yeah, if you haven't checked out his work again, the Long Walk.
- 31:10He was also great in Alien Romulus.
- 31:13I've not seen it.
- 31:15Yeah, he plays like, the synthetic being in that.
- 31:17He's great.
- 31:18I haven't watched Industry the show, but apparently he's really.
- 31:21He's great in that too.
- 31:23But.
- 31:23Yeah, but I, like you said, oh, no one is ever going to like, match his gravitas and what he brought to that character.
- 31:29But I think this is a great way to honor the legacy.
- 31:32Yeah.
- 31:32Having it, especially with the character itself.
- 31:35Having it as the sun.
- 31:36Yeah.
- 31:36Right.
- 31:37Yeah.
- 31:37I mean, Chadwick intentionally.
- 31:39I mean, Mitchell 42, he played Howard Thurman as well.
- 31:42He.
- 31:42He.
- 31:42He played.
- 31:43He intentionally played black heroes.
- 31:46Right.
- 31:47So for, you know, for folks who watch those movies, like, it felt like it's.
- 31:55Josh noted this felt right meat and right to do so and, and so in David Johnson different, you know, filmography, but I hope they'll again as take up the mantle.
- 32:14Well, and without spoilers on the long walk, I think that character specifically lends itself to what he could do with the Lecter because he plays more like he's paired with Cooper.
- 32:25Hoffman's character is out for vengeance.
- 32:27David Johnson's character in that movie is.
- 32:29It's in this dystopian world where they're on.
- 32:32They're in this, like, competition where all the contestants have to walk endlessly and whoever doesn't succeed is killed off by this fascist military.
- 32:41And David Johnson's character is like, the only one who is pure of heart and as pure intentions.
- 32:47And he's like, he wants to do good if he wins and he's, you know, trying to help everyone else as much as he can.
- 32:57So I like, he brought so much nuance to that role that I think will really carry over into how he portray.
- 33:05Portrays the next.
- 33:09Yeah.
- 33:09Andy, any thoughts?
- 33:12Sure.
- 33:12You know, if you.
- 33:13If you want to see David Johnson give an excellent performance in a film where a bunch of people don't die, you can also see him in Rylan.
- 33:20I've heard that one's good too.
- 33:21Yeah.
- 33:21Yeah.
- 33:22You know, I.
- 33:22I'm excited for this.
- 33:23You know, Ryan Coogler has.
- 33:25Has done a lot of good work and so, yeah, glad to have him run it back.
- 33:29And you know that we're.
- 33:31Anytime we can get more of Winston Dukes and Baku.
- 33:34Yes, please.
- 33:35He's been a Kolite ever since he tried to.
- 33:40You know, he told Martin Freeman that the.
- 33:42His.
- 33:42His kids were vegetarian.
- 33:43They weren't actually going to eat him.
- 33:45Uh, that was.
- 33:45That was a standout moment.
- 33:47And, you know, he's continued to charm ever since.
- 33:49Yeah.
- 33:49So very excited, this one.
- 33:51Not at all annoyed to have this announced instead of Young Avengers or Shang Chi 2.
- 33:56We definitely needed to get this as well.
- 33:58And you know, since.
- 33:59Since Josh Indirectly asked my thoughts, you know, and since we're having a resurgence or we're relitigating the COVID pandemic and how it was handled and the vaccine and so forth.
- 34:11Um, you know, I already have.
- 34:12I already got my soapbox.
- 34:13I don't think what.
- 34:14My thoughts there would be a surprise to anybody.
- 34:17But, you know, I will say that I.
- 34:19You know, I don't.
- 34:20I was aware of Letitia Wright making some comments at the time in 2021 or whatever it was, you know, and then it doesn't seem to have come back since.
- 34:30I would say, you know, people are allowed to be wrong and to change their mind and.
- 34:34And, you know, perhaps that's what's happened.
- 34:35Yeah.
- 34:36You know, if it's more of a, you know, gag order from.
- 34:39From the House of Mouse, that's a little bit less uncomfortable for a variety.
- 34:43But, you know, I don't know how to handle their business, and I don't know what her current state of mind is, but, you know, there were.
- 34:50There were a lot of forces pushing a lot of people to say things and align with things for, you know, because of that, you know, what their group and what their community was doing, and that, you know, that
- 35:03put a lot of pressure on a lot of folks.
- 35:05And so, you know, I can't entirely blame people for getting swept up in that.
- 35:10Yeah.
- 35:10Doesn't mean we can't correct that.
- 35:11You know, we can't correct for it and.
- 35:13And try to make adjustments and try to improve.
- 35:14But, you know, I think there's also space for.
- 35:17We need.
- 35:18We need to find a way that.
- 35:19To come back to a shared reality instead of relitigating events of 4, 5, 6 years ago if they're not having a bearing on what's happening now.
- 35:31So, yeah, now probably a little illogical, but, like, I think it would have bothered me less if it was, like, an actress who's playing, like, Scarlet Witch or the lady who plays Agatha.
- 35:41But something about it being a scientist, you know, like, I'm like, I know the actor isn't a scientist, but something about it just.
- 35:46I'm like, I don't know.
- 35:47It just took me out of it.
- 35:49I hear you.
- 35:50And, yeah, it did, you know, hamper my enthusiasm for that character as well as, you know, one of our MCU scientists and, you know, one of the few women and, you know, people of color who also are depicted
- 36:02as a scientist in the Marvel universe.
- 36:04And so, uh, you know, I would.
- 36:06I would have hated to have lost her entirely because of that.
- 36:08And I Understand what you're saying that, you know, it does kind of complicate that portrayal, but I'm not going to be sad about, you know, having that.
- 36:18Having.
- 36:18Having the presence of that character on screen.
- 36:21And, you know, hopefully, let's just write is, you know, working through whatever she needed to work through and is not constrained by her employment to.
- 36:29Yeah, they, you know, toe the party line, so to speak.
- 36:33Yeah.
- 36:33Hopefully Grace amends.
- 36:35Grace.
- 36:36Yeah.
- 36:36Yes.
- 36:37Amen.
- 36:37No.
- 36:38Great discussion there.
- 36:39Evan, any thoughts here on my Panther?
- 36:42No, just for the.
- 36:45Just to keep it brief.
- 36:46It's.
- 36:47Yeah, I'm just excited for it.
- 36:49I.
- 36:49I've never seen him in anything, but I'm glad they, like you said, Andy, they are putting this one as a priority because I do want to see Shang Chi 2 and all that.
- 37:03But, yeah, no.
- 37:04So I am excited.
- 37:06Very cool.
- 37:07Well, those were the big announcements from Comic Con.
- 37:10Like Andy was saying earlier, they're saving X Men casting announcements for D23 coming up.
- 37:16And we did get.
- 37:17Samara Weaving is confirmed as Emma Frost, but that was reported last week.
- 37:23Other than that, it's been.
- 37:24I've seen every rumor imaginable about Xavier casting Magneto, Cyclops, et cetera.
- 37:30So we'll wait and see.
- 37:31But I think that's a great idea actually to do an episode on X Men 97 Season 2.
- 37:35And then once we have the full cast of the MCU X Men, I have my picks, but.
- 37:40But I'm excited to see where.
- 37:41What happens there.
- 37:44On a bit of a dour note, though, that made me turn into the Hulk.
- 37:48They pull the.
- 37:49I immediately thought of the, like, gay Jonah Jameson, like, oh, hey, Peter, you're fired.
- 37:54Never mind.
- 37:55You're on fire.
- 37:55Like, I.
- 37:56But in this case, it was the opposite.
- 37:57They renewed Wonder Man Season 2 a few months ago, and I was stoked because I absolutely love season one.
- 38:04And then just last week, we're right at the height of Marvel right now with new Spider man movie.
- 38:09All this Comic Con news, they said, nope, we're pulling the plug and we're not renewing the show.
- 38:15I have nothing but negative things to say here, but I guess I get it.
- 38:18I.
- 38:19I talked.
- 38:19I know about Wonder Man Season 1 earlier this year.
- 38:23Absolutely loved it.
- 38:24But anyone have any thoughts here on, like.
- 38:27I mean, I know I'm sure there's financial stuff, but it's still.
- 38:30This is bs I have.
- 38:31I have no sympathy for them.
- 38:33Yeah.
- 38:34I mean, I think they're hoping that this.
- 38:36Well, I mean, the Black Panther announcement kind of wins the day, you know, You.
- 38:43You shield yourself from some critique with that.
- 38:48But, my gosh, can we not have multiple shows with really awesome black leads doing, you know, having fun?
- 38:58So that was.
- 38:59You know, I don't know that.
- 39:00I don't think this was a.
- 39:02I don't know that it was a racially motivated thing.
- 39:05I'm not trying to say that, but I just want to have multiple shows to watch with amazing black leads.
- 39:11And this is one that.
- 39:12That I was also looking forward to seeing season two and.
- 39:16And what they did with it.
- 39:17So disappointing.
- 39:18Yeah.
- 39:20Oh, no.
- 39:21I was just gonna say, I.
- 39:22I just kind of agree with you guys.
- 39:23It's basically all.
- 39:24The show was phenomenal.
- 39:26Like, if the show writers decided it didn't need a season two and they were happy with how it ended, I think that wouldn't bother me because, like, season one does stand on its own.
- 39:34Like, that wouldn't bother me.
- 39:35I think what bothers me is they said we have more story to tell, then it got the plug pull.
- 39:39That's what I'm like.
- 39:40But hopefully we see the character come back in some other way or they still incorporate him.
- 39:44Like, the characters were all great, and I'm just gonna be really sad if they don't ever follow through on any of that, because it was phenomenal.
- 39:49Yeah.
- 39:49And also, like, I mean, I think they definitely should scale back.
- 39:53I'm glad they're scaling back on the.
- 39:54Because they were putting out way too many movies and shows just a few years ago.
- 39:58I'm like, they're not.
- 39:59And I'm like, that's not a good approach.
- 40:00You need to scale.
- 40:01Like, but in this case, a.
- 40:04This one I cannot imagine is as costly as something like Loki or even WandaVisions like that.
- 40:11Because, like, this is a pretty low effect show.
- 40:14It's very character driven.
- 40:16I mean, yes, they have, yeah, Abdul Mateen and Ben Kingsley in it, but it's not, you know, super special effects every episode.
- 40:26I just can't imagine it was that costly.
- 40:29And, you know, and, like, exactly.
- 40:31Like, exactly.
- 40:32If it had been a one off, that's fine.
- 40:34But they left it not only open for more, but I thought they left it on a frigate cliffhanger there.
- 40:40Um, and especially with everything they're doing with damage control, like, it's a perfect one to continue.
- 40:46So I'm just really disappointed this was the one that was canceled and.
- 40:51And all.
- 40:51Yeah.
- 40:51And just.
- 40:52It's like, yes, we don't know that.
- 40:54Like, there is a racially motivated thing.
- 40:57But, like, I saw the post.
- 40:58Like, it's like, oh, well, they had, you know, this canceled.
- 41:01They're not moving forward with Blade.
- 41:03They.
- 41:04And then there were several.
- 41:05I mean, like.
- 41:06And then, I mean, Sam Wilson's been kind of sidelined.
- 41:09Like, it's not a great look for them.
- 41:11I mean, yes, Black Panther is Aaron, Kate and Ryan Coogler.
- 41:14They'll give the green light to anything but that.
- 41:18You know, it's not a good look that multiple other black LED shows, the movies have, you know, gotten pushed aside.
- 41:25Right.
- 41:26I love the show and how it embraced the nerdy father aspect of it.
- 41:34And it was.
- 41:35It was really fun to see that on screen because I saw myself and I saw my dad in that.
- 41:41I'm like, oh, cool.
- 41:43But super disappointed, man.
- 41:45Because I would love to see those characters again.
- 41:48Hopefully they will do something.
- 41:49They'll show up somewhere.
- 41:51Yeah, I would love to see him in a movie if they do, like, either West Coast Avengers or bring him in Boseker, where, like, I definitely want to see his story continue.
- 41:59Because, yeah, I mean, like, like, to bring example of, like, yeah.
- 42:03Abdul Mateen was also in HBO's Watchmen, which, like, I don't want another season of that because it's a perfect season of television and it tells a complete story, so I don't need any more there.
- 42:14But again, here it's like, oh, I want to see his story continue.
- 42:18There's a lot more to explore, so we'll see.
- 42:21I hope they do bring the, like, him and Trevor, which also.
- 42:25Yeah, this was the best iteration of Trevor too.
- 42:27It was just like, I'm amazed they've.
- 42:30Got me to like that character.
- 42:31Truly amazing context.
- 42:33The Mandarin is like my favorite comic book Marvel villain.
- 42:36It's incredible.
- 42:37They got me to like Trevor.
- 42:38Yeah.
- 42:39Yeah.
- 42:40Andy, any thoughts here?
- 42:41I don't know.
- 42:42I.
- 42:43You know, I don't.
- 42:43I don't know that I have much to add beyond what's already been said.
- 42:46Yeah.
- 42:46You know, I also would have been happy for a season two, I guess, maybe to, you know, counterbalance a little bit.
- 42:51Marvel had to make several seasons of television shows that seemed to be more David Zaslav.
- 42:59We need Disney to happen.
- 43:00We need to make Fetch happen.
- 43:02Than it was driven by.
- 43:03These are things we want to make.
- 43:04And so if they really couldn't find a season two of the shows they wanted to make, even though they thought they could and they were optimistic going in, there's a big delta between we have an idea or we
- 43:14have enthusiasm to continue and, oh, we actually know what eight episodes of this show will look like.
- 43:19And if that's really what happened.
- 43:20I'd rather they didn't make it than to forge ahead just out of inertia or whatever.
- 43:28But, you know, it's, it's not entirely clear that that is what happened.
- 43:31And yes, the, the optics of it could be better, especially in light of other things that were going on.
- 43:36But hopefully they're not, you know, like I said that that doesn't mean that they're not in the Yaya Abdul Mateen, Simon Williams business.
- 43:42They're just not in the Wonder Man Season 2 business.
- 43:45And, you know, I hope that would be a good, you know, that would be a good development to, to continue that character story in some fashion.
- 43:52Yeah, and it's a good point because, like, when something like this happens, I'm immediately thinking it's a studio exec that made the call.
- 43:57And.
- 43:58But I don't know, we will find out more because, like, for instance, like during Kathleen Kennedy's reign, she was getting blamed for everything when in fact she greenlit a lot of stuff that didn't happen because Bob Iger turned
- 44:09it down.
- 44:09So we don't know the behind the scenes mechanics of like, who made the call or if it was a creative decision.
- 44:15So we'll see.
- 44:15But yes, I do hope we'll see the character again.
- 44:18Yeah.
- 44:18My biggest foolish hope.
- 44:20I'm a Kingdom Hearts fan and filled with foolish hopes.
- 44:24Maybe it was canceled because they were like, man, this is too good and we got to incorporate it in something else.
- 44:28Kevin mentioned the damage control stuff, so, you know, there's a lot of ways they could plug it into something bigger than just another show that might be more fun.
- 44:37Yeah, that's my.
- 44:37That's my biggest foolish hope.
- 44:39Yeah.
- 44:40Yeah.
- 44:41Hey, optimism is good.
- 44:42We need it.
- 44:43And if we're talking Kingdom Hearts and unexpected crossovers, maybe they're merging with the studio.
- 44:47Season two.
- 44:48Yeah, yeah, it's going to be.
- 44:49Wonder man is going to be in Kingdom Hearts, actually.
- 44:51Listen, Kingdom Hearts 3, the World of Toy Story, according to the creators, is canon to the story Toy Story timeline.
- 44:58So.
- 44:59Okay.
- 45:00You know, it can happen.
- 45:02I doubt it.
- 45:03I mean, I don't think we ever thought we were going to get something like Doomsday and have all the Fox X Men back.
- 45:08So, I mean, the possibilities now are pretty endless.
- 45:12It's true.
- 45:13Yeah.
- 45:14Awesome.
- 45:14Well, that is all the news.
- 45:16I know we had a lot to cover tonight and this is where we have to bid Andy farewell because he has actually not yet seen Brand New Day.
- 45:23He's going tomorrow and I cannot wait to get his thoughts.
- 45:26But in the interest of not spoiling it for him.
- 45:29Yeah, Andy, we will wish you well.
- 45:31Andy, text me when you've seen it.
- 45:33Yes.
- 45:34Because honestly, your opinion is one that I want the most about certain things.
- 45:37Yeah.
- 45:38So I need you to let me know when I could talk to you about it.
- 45:42All right, we'll stand by then.
- 45:44Yeah.
- 45:45Yeah.
- 45:45Thanks, Eddie.
- 45:46Take care.
- 45:46Thanks, guys.
- 45:47See you.
- 45:48Last thing I would say about.
- 45:49Yeah, yeah, but just a brief shout out for the.
- 45:54The Rings of Power next season.
- 45:57Brief shout out because, I mean, they're promising us, you know, Gandalf after he knows how to be a wizard.
- 46:05He's.
- 46:05Tom Bombadilled it up and I'm looking.
- 46:10Forward to seeing what they do.
- 46:11Really am.
- 46:12That's all I'll say about it.
- 46:13I'm looking forward to it.
- 46:14Yeah, we got to get the resident Tolkien geek Nick Polk when that.
- 46:19When that season drops because.
- 46:21Yeah, but yeah, I did like I am.
- 46:23I may get back into it.
- 46:24I.
- 46:24I actually like season one.
- 46:27I didn't.
- 46:27I started the last season, but I hadn't finished.
- 46:30But I'm curious where they'll.
- 46:32They'll go with that.
- 46:33Yeah.
- 46:33So awesome.
- 46:34But yeah, so lots all kinds of nerd news going on right now.
- 46:37But yeah, I know this is a pack episode tonight, but I have already shared my thoughts on Brand New Day, so I kind of want to hear from you guys first because Christian and I dropped our review on
- 46:49Sunday night, which you can go check out.
- 46:51But.
- 46:52But now Brand New Day has been out for about a week now, so anyone want to go first with just their initial thoughts and then we can kind of get deeper into the themes and catch anything?
- 47:05All right.
- 47:05Can.
- 47:06Would you guys think it's a good idea to pause here and then we start.
- 47:10Can you take you live?
- 47:12We can do that.
- 47:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:13I don't want Joshua's computer to explode during the editing, so that's a good idea.
- 47:17Yeah.
- 47:17Yeah, yeah.
- 47:18Cool.
- 47:19We will see you guys in.
- 47:22I'm back soon.
- 47:23Yes, Sam.
