- 0:44SPEAKER_04: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: Tristan, how was your week?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: My week?
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: My week?
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Do the people want to hear about week?
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: They want to hear about my my commutes?
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Anything interesting happening.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: No, my life is not interesting or eventful.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: You know it is interesting and eventful.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Stole it right from under you.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: You did.
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: The Texas Tech Raiders.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: Raiders?
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: Red Raiders.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Oakland.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: No more.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: No more.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: The Texas Tech Red Raiders are one and O, and there is a certain tradition that we do on this podcast.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: Tristan, can you remind the people what we do afterwards?
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: We quote Matt Wells saying one and oh, Don.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: Right where we want to be.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: No, we we play the song.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 1:45SPEAKER_04: We have to play the song.
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: Red raid.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: Red raid.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Red Red.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: One and Odon.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: One and Odon, right where we want to be.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: It's kind of it's quasi one in Odon zone here.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: At least in vibes.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Like it's not like it's not outlandishly one in Odon.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: We're not saying it j we are still saying it jokingly.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: But there's a tinge, you know, behind every joke, there's a tinge of seriousness, correct?
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and that's what makes comedy great.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: You know, there's there's a little bit of that connection um with reality.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: And listen, we were 42 and a half point favorites against the Abilene Christian Wildcats, and we won by not that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: We won by 23.
- 2:50SPEAKER_04: The second half was not good.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Um no, I mean it was no, it was pretty killer if you're big on kicks.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: If that's like your if that's your apple tea, that you're you were all over you some second half.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: You love if you love Stone Harrington and you love kicking field goals and no, we do love hey, don't get it confused.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: No, we do love Stone Harrington.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: We do love Stone Harrington.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: We'd rather make our red zone field goals than not make our red zone field goals, but I think ultimately we were all a little frustrated with how many red zone field goals that we did, in fact, kick, because guess what?
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: We did that last year, and I wouldn't like to do that again.
- 3:30SPEAKER_04: And this start to the season felt a little bit like what we did last year.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: You don't like seeing Stone Harrington being shot out four times in a row to score.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: No, I I didn't particularly.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Not in like the extra point way, the three-point way.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in like the hey, let's kick a 30-yard field goal because we have to, sort of way.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:51SPEAKER_04: Um there were issues we can discuss.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: There were also positives, which we will also discuss.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: So, Tristan, I guess you watched this game on Saturday.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: Tell me about tell me about your experience.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: The the watch experience, and this is kind of a topic that was thrown in here before we geared up, and it was what's the ideal way to watch a college football game?
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: And I was at a big family reunion, and you know, you never turn that down.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: You know, those only come around once or twice a year.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: So of course you're gonna go to the family reunion thing.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: But I would say watching a football game at a giant party where lots of sodas are flowing, you know, there's lots of conversations going on at all times.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Cokes, sprites, Pepsi, sprites, fances, big reds.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Love a big reds, ginger ale's even whenever you're having to go to the back of the cabinet.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Hey, I actually I love ginger ale.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: Okay, no, ginger ginger ale is for the airplane, and that is it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: That's a that is a goaded choice for the airplane.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Um it's like that soda only exists on on a an air two.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: It's like the only time I'm drinking Canada dry is on the airplane.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: For some reason, it's gotta be ginger ale.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Um but but um it that is that is like a less than an ideal way to watch a football game.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Like granted, you're still watching it, you're surrounded by people you would you would theoretically love watching a football game with, but it's just it's just there's so much going on that you can't focus on the game.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: Well, and it's it's it's uh your situation, especially at the family reunion.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: You haven't seen these people in a while.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: You know, you're catching up, you're you're catching up on their lives, they're catching up on your lives.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's not ideal for the game watching experience.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: And also, as much as we love our families, sometimes our families are not Red Raider fans, and that's unfortunate.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: You know, it is we we try, we we've tried to convince them to turn to the the good side, but you know, unfortunately, us being in Texas, we deal with a lot of Aggies, we deal with a lot of Longhorns, we deal with, you know, even some TCU and some Baylor and some U of H here there.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: But that is honestly, that's probably one of the most unideal scenarios to watch a football game, is at the family reunion.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Is is that which is the family reunion above or below the sports bar watch?
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: I like the sports bar watch.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: The problem with the sports bar watch is that you need to go to a specific bar to watch that game.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: And it's usually like you know, if you're here in San Antonio, Texas, like myself, there's not a lot of red Raider bars.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: There are a few.
- 6:33SPEAKER_04: You know, we do watch parties here or there, the San Antonio Alumni Association.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: We've been to a couple of them, they do they do a pretty good job.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: But if you just go downtown to watch a college football game, you're not likely going to get the situation that you want, you know.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: But if you are in a packed bar for everybody rooting for the same team, that is a great experience.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that is that is a good one.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: But you it's you're still it's still hard to focus.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Like you're not focused on the X's and O's like you are when you're by yourself.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Like whenever you're by yourself, you can sit there and pick the game apart, you know, because you're really smart and you know more than the coaches do.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: So it's you have you're able to do that in the comfort of your couch, uh, way more so than out in public at the busy bar.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: But I totally get what you're saying.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Like, there's two kinds of sports bar watches, right?
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Or even three kinds.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: You know, one kind is it's crowded and there's a whole bunch of games on.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: You're trying to focus on your one game if it's up there.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: The other kind is what you said, everyone's edited there and dedicated to watch it.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: The third and worst kind, it's a slow day at that sports bar, and you've asked the bartender several times.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Please.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: It's on Fox Sports One TV.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: Do you do you have Fox Sports One?
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Please.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: I've asked for the 16th time.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: You're trying to stay really polite.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's it's it's not happening.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: No, you you don't get it.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: LSU Clemson is delayed.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: There's no game being played.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: No, see, it's the it Fox doesn't have any more games today.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: It's this is the news.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: It's gonna stay the news.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: So and it it is a San Antonio bar like that, like you're gonna get mostly just casuals of generally anything, just out of any big metro.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: So it's not ideal.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: So but the top-notch watching experiences, I love how we're spending like 10 minutes on this, is sitting alone in your living room, well, with your family, immediate family, people that live in that house watching said game, and the only one that matches that is a tiny watch party of fellow fans coming in just to watch that game.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Like they're not, it's there's nothing else surrounding that.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: There's no baby shower, there's no um party going on, you know, they're about to head to after.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: You're just there for that game.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: So, like, that's those are the two ideal, besides being at the game, of course, ideal ways to watch the football game.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I would I would agree.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: I do love a solo watch, uh, especially when it's Texas Tech.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Like, I think an ideal solo watch is like right at your 11 a.m.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: kick.
- 9:09SPEAKER_04: You know, you've just woken up, you maybe had some early lunch or something, or maybe it's coming a little later.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: But you watch big noon kick off.
- 9:16SPEAKER_04: Watch big noon kick off.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: And probably maybe a little bit of the kick the competition or no.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I think but when Texas Tech comes on, it's just Texas Tech.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't I don't switch channels very often.
- 9:29SPEAKER_04: Like I'll just go through the commercials, I'll hop on Twitter during the commercials, whatever.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: I'm not usually changing the channel during a Texas Tech game.
- 9:37SPEAKER_04: These early season games are a little different.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: I mean, luckily this one was a Fox Sports One, so cable, you know, pretty easy access.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: You know, it's not like we had to go ESPN Plus or something like that.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: Um and I was watching on an airplane.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: This was uh this is my life now.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Where's that in the in orders of watchways?
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: Not not high.
- 9:57SPEAKER_04: Not high.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: I can tell you that, not high.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Canada dry in hand.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Canada dry in hand.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: You're hoping the Wi-Fi holds up for you know at least a good bit because the live television function at American Airlines does not have FS1, so I had to stream it.
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: And streaming on the airplane, not ideal.
- 10:16SPEAKER_04: Goes in and out, you miss a couple plays, maybe it's behind.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: So no, uh, my my watch experience was not great, but I was glad that I got to see it uh live for um, you know, probably one of the few times this season for me personally, but um no, I think I guess let's let's talk about the game itself.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, is that what we're here for?
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: I I guess that's what the people here are are are coming to watch, uh coming to watch, coming to listen to us two bozos talk about the game.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: We won.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: That's the important thing.
- 10:51SPEAKER_04: That's the thing in this game, and we won convincingly.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: There was never a doubt, unlike the last game against the Abilene Christian Wildcats.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: And um, I think we're just overall still a little disappointed with the offense.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, yeah, is Alwyn Christian a tough out?
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Are we good can we can we just go ahead and decide that?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Are they a tough out?
- 11:11SPEAKER_04: No, they're they're no tough out.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: They should never be a tough out.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: You sure?
- 11:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I've watched two games where they seem pretty tough.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: You mean the two game one that they lost against Lamar?
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: And uh, no, I meant I meant Texas Tech versus Ablane Christian.
- 11:27SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Well, this one was much better than that one.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: It's a little kind of tough.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Compared to 2024.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: We're a little better.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: No, yes.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: So do you want you want to just get into the disappointment or you don't want to start with happies?
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: You just go with sad.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, well, let's start with positives.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: That's a good idea.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: Exactly, dude.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: More positive podcast.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Um, Jacoby Williams was my number.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: That man's a guy, dude.
- 11:53SPEAKER_04: That man is a guy.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: I love dude.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Though the running backs in general, dude, were all they were advertised to be.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Like they are they all played their role really well, but obviously, you know, I like how you pointed out Jacoby Williams.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Like, dude, that guy can do it all.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: What can't he do?
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: I've been saying this.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: I said it all last year.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: I said it the year prior when he only got minimal snaps.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Jacoby Williams is a dude.
- 12:16SPEAKER_04: You need to give him the ball in whatever capacity, whatever way you did, those first two drives where they were touchdowns, that was the Jacoby Williams show.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: Um, and then finally, you know, Quentin Joyner finished one of them, and then uh Jacoby finished the second one.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: And you know, Cam was good too.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: You you look at his average, it wasn't great.
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: That was mostly due to the second half stuff.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: Uh the really vanilla play calling, we can get into all that.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: But um, I think the running back the week, by the way.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, everybody's using vanilla, um, including including us, which which is accurate.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: Um, Jacoby Williams, 71 yards on 13 carries, touchdown, you know, Quinn Joyner, another touchdown on the ground.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: Uh Cam Dickey added 48 yards.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: So you you had the three running back tandem, right?
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: You're not going to get unbelievable games out of all these guys every single week.
- 13:05SPEAKER_04: It's going to be a uh a group effort from the running back room, and that's what you're hoping for.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: And that's what we're providing here at Texas Tech is three really solid running backs, and that showed in this game.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the great thing about the three running backs is they all bring something different to the table.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: You know, they can they can each they can each affect the game in different ways.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And that's not super common with this many good running backs.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Like usually have, you know, one, maybe two game differences in the in that room, but these guys, they all bring something special to the table.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: But you know, whatever you whenever you point out Jacoby Williams, uh this guy is just as dangerous in the passing game as he is the running game.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Like it's just this you can hand it to him, you can pass it to him.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: He's gonna and he's gonna get the ball down the field.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Like that guy's gonna swing and dance, and he's gonna he's gonna make some guys miss, dude.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: This guy is slinky, my man.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: And can we do a quick overreaction?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Let's do a quick overreaction.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Is he the is he the best player on the offense?
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: Who that is an overreaction.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: Well, no, I mean I think going so so I'm thinking about my preseason self and who I actually thought.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: I I would have probably said Terrence Carter.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was about to say TC.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: That's how I kind of popped in.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: I probably would have said TC.
- 14:15SPEAKER_04: I probably would still say TC, even though he didn't get a lot of second half action in this one.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: But I I think most consistent and most I guess most consistent positive plays you're getting from Jacoby Williams.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: And the big playability from him is what takes him over the top because explosiveness.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:39SPEAKER_04: And the dude is so shifty, like you were saying earlier.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: He is, you don't know.
- 14:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, any play he could take off for a 60-yard touchdown.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: It just is who he is, and we saw that countless times last year.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: Um, and and I've said this, I've I've been on the Jacoby Williams hype train for three years now.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm so in if we get him the ball as much as we did against ACU, I think good things are gonna happen.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I I just I don't know.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I I feel like we're gonna start seeing some real offensive production out of this guy.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: I'm starting seeing it's already happening, but like just like continued offensive production out of him, just like just reliability.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: And like you said, in and not predictability, like he he's just because he can he can just pull out all sorts of stuff out of his hat.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: So it's it's it's reliability, but it's like unpredictable reliability, and you're not sure how he's gonna get those yards, he's just gonna do it.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh obviously, you know, uh TC is a great choice, you know, and there's still plenty of season to for the boring pick of a uh the quarterback, Will Hammond, to step into that spot, or maybe even seeing Will uh seeing uh Micah Hudson really explode into a five-star he's supposed to be.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: But obviously, you know, there's still a lot of season to go, and Jacoby Williams is is that skilled player that seems to have everybody's attention right now.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: On the offense, I'm sure maybe somebody some people can be like, well, you know, if a real ball mode knower might say someone on the O-line, and maybe they could.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just that's just not something that kind of pops out in your brain whenever you're talking about the offense, of course.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Like we want we want the score, and they can't do that.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I mean the offensive line had a good performance uh overall.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: I think they're still getting used to each other.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: You know, Jordan Church is new, um, but our tackles I thought played pretty well.
- 16:14SPEAKER_04: They got they both got graded pretty high on the PFF scale.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Zambrano's coming back for one of his first games, you know, really in a red raider uniform.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Didn't play a lot last year, coming in from the transfer portal, thought he did okay.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: Sheridan Wilson, I think, is a a more than solid, you know, center right there, and obviously one of your team captains, so great locker room guy.
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, I mean, I think the offensive line had a had a pretty solid performance overall.
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, I just think, you know, this red zone stuff, we got to get figured out.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: And it's it was, you know, it's obviously fresh in everybody's mind because of the issues we had last year, you know, seeing that defense and seeing how good we were on that side of the ball, and then you know, just being consistently disappointed because you don't have a tr you don't have trouble moving the ball down the field.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: It happens, you know.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: We you saw the first two drives that ended up in touchdowns, but even on all the I mean, you're in the red zone constantly, you know, you're getting there.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: It's just when you get there, it's like there's just a big brick wall in the way, and it seems like you know, you get 30 yards out and it seems like 70 yards out.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: So I, you know, I I a lot of people were talking about the play calling.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: It was vanilla.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: I understand it being vanilla against an ACU, but with this caliber of opponent, even with a vanilla offense, you should have been scoring these points.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was about I was about to say, like uh a vanilla game, it should still should have been about a 40-point differential.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: But like your vanilla stuff should work easily against them, even if they see it coming.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: We were kind of talking about this in the pregame that you know, like really it doesn't really matter what playbook you throw at them, you should blow them out of the water anyway, even if it's just the most basic stuff you can imagine.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: So that was kind of frustrating.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: It's like it's like Left Witch is only capable of scheming up plays if he has the entire field to work with.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: As soon as it shrinks, it's like his mind shrinks with it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: So I I it's it's of course hard to say whether it's a Mac problem or if it's a a Will Confidence problem, but it's it's just I don't I don't know, man.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: It's it's hard not to point to Leftwich.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: You know, he is the guy that's paid to do it, so you kind of look there.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: And with the issues that kind of continue from last year, it's like, well, that's the uh constant variable here.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean, talking about Will specifically, I thought he had a good first game back, right?
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: So, you know, the mental part of coming back from a major injury probably doesn't get talked about enough um from a guy, especially his age.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: And we we love Will.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: We think he's a really solid, you know, mentally stable kid, but um, you know, it's gonna be a learning curve coming back from that type of injury, no matter who you are.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: So I I think overall his performance I was I was pleased with.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: I definitely want to see improvement from him, especially on certain balls.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, some of that red zone stuff, he just missed the guys.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: Like it, it it was just you know, a miss a miscue.
- 19:10SPEAKER_04: And uh that's gonna happen with a what sometimes we forget, he's a redshirt sophomore quarterback who's only started that was his fourth start ever.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: So, you know, let's not pretend like Will Hammond just because he got some run last year is like this experienced, you know, model quarterback.
- 19:27SPEAKER_04: So he's he's got a learning curve to him.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: And I'm glad that during we have these games like ACU and you know Sam Eason State, we'll see about next week.
- 19:38SPEAKER_04: I I think he got his feet under him in a positive way.
- 19:41SPEAKER_04: Now he missed some throws, obviously, but you know, you hope that you'd rather he missed the throws in ACU, go look at the tape and then get that cleaned up for later on in the season.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I think that's the best way to kind of recap how how that went down.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And in the the we we already touched on the O-line, but the O-line did a great job of keeping him keeping him safe.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: It never really felt like he was rushed, so it looked like Will was able to work through what he had to do to get to move the ball down the field.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: And like you touched on already, dude, we really didn't have a problem moving the ball down the field.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: It was just, you know, capitalizing at the end.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: And look, it's the first game for everyone, even including the quarterback.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: So you really hope that it's just kind of him, you know, working through those uh through that uh uh injury.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: I I was looking for that blood word that like goes uh and you know that's that's bad for you in your blood.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: I I can't I can't think of it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: But it's uh I'll try to sound really smart, but everyone knows I'm not.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: So it's it's just interesting.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Exposed.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Just of course it's gonna be interesting to see how he expands on that and moves forward here.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Um because you know, this is hopefully just the beginning.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: And we know there's big things ahead of this kid, and I really do think this will be a big step forward here this Saturday.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is definitely a test, you know, more of a test than what we probably originally thought it was gonna be.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: And we'll we'll get to Oregon State in a little bit, but um, yeah, overall I liked Will's performance.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, there was a particular play in the first half, I think it was the first quarter, where you actually he got some pressure on him and he escaped.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: And that is what I was most nervous about because you know, Will Hammond with the cutting with everything, you know, that was a huge part of his game last year, and we just needed to see it post ACL.
- 21:24SPEAKER_04: And I think you saw bits and pieces of it.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: Obviously, you know, he didn't take off a ton, which I hope he doesn't.
- 21:30SPEAKER_04: You know, you're still coming back.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: That injury was 10 months ago, like right.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: There's you know, he he needs time still, uh to snapped 10 months ago.
- 21:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean it's snapped.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: That's one of the worst injuries you can experience, uh as as a as any athlete.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: But no, I mean, he you know, he hit the big one to to Malcolm Simmons there at the end to get the uh the big touchdown at the end, but um you know he was 14 of 14 to start off.
- 21:59SPEAKER_04: I mean I mean, definitely look confident, look solid on the short game passes, found Terrence Carter, and then kind of got away from that a little bit.
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: And, you know, again, go back to the play calling, go back to, you know, not finding guys.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: It's going to take him some time.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: So I I still have a lot of faith in Will Hammond, but I do definitely need to see a little more from him as we progress throughout the season.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: And then, you know, game three comes around and you're playing one of the best teams in the Big 12.
- 22:27SPEAKER_04: So it's, you know, you got to pick it up here pretty quick.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: It's hard not to think youth.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: You don't really look at him.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: It's just, he's just, he's just he's just green.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: And there's a whole there's no substitute for game time and uh action minutes there.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: So the word I was looking for was lactic acid.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: Lactic acid.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Lactic acid.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: Look at that.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Lactic acid.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: But now it doesn't hit as hard because I stumbled like a fool.
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Well, maybe next time.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: Next time you can get it.
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: You want to hear another positive?
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: Jamon Mathis.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: Two and a half sacks.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Positive.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: Coming in for the injured Trey White, who is not going to play against Oregon State either, which we are becoming uh a little more scared about for the Houston game.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: We we hope that he's there for Houston.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, despite this, two and a half sacks is a great game.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Jamon Mathis showed some pressure.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: Um, he was not thought of as maybe, you know, he's not the first guy you think of when you think of his transfer portal class on who he brought in on the edge positions.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: And uh he showed out, and that's kind of showing your depth there.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely, is what everyone's talking about, dude.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Uh just if if that if that's a depth piece to making that sort of uh hactic out there, dude, like I think you're in pretty good shape.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Like you don't get so scared whenever uh you you see our big boys go down because you know that's kind of been the conversation is like A, is this defense gonna be as good as last year?
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: And B, does it have the same amount of horses in the stable to get to keep it going if someone goes down?
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Because we saw that happen last year, and we were pleasantly surprised with surprised with how the depth stepped up.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: It looks like we're getting a little more of that this year, dude.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and I mean I know I'm sure you're getting to this point, but the positive can just be applied to that whole unit imperial, dude.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: I think the defense went out there and did their damn job.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Like I there was there's it's hard to complain about the performance they put out there.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: They only let three points happen.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Like, where are you ever gonna complain about that, regardless of the opponent?
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no offensive touchdowns given up.
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, there were times where they got in the red zone and did not, you know, made the stops that they needed to, so that was big.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, the the linebacking core showed out.
- 24:35SPEAKER_04: I liked uh I like John Curry getting that interception.
- 24:37SPEAKER_04: Ben Roberts obviously did his thing.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Romaine tell me about your uh Romaine frustrations.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: Well, it was up and down.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't think I think it took him a little bit to get going.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Uh had a couple good possessions straight and and stacked a little success there in the second half.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, the first half I think it took him a little bit to get going.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: And he's I I I think that's gonna be a little bit of the frustration with Texas Tech fans because you know, you're looking at that linebacking core and you're not seeing Jacob Rodriguez, and you're seeing how much and how well he thrived in the system.
- 25:11SPEAKER_04: And Austin Romain is just a different type of linebacker, he's not going to be Jacob Rodriguez, and we should not expect Jacob Rodriguez from this.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: It's going to be different, and everybody is going to work differently because again, you don't have David Bailey, you don't have Lee Hunter, you don't have, you know, Skylar Gil Howard or Romello Haidt.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: Like you don't have the same team, this this robotic defensive line that you had last year.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: And you know, Romaine will hopefully kind of step up and be more of a pass rushing linebacker versus what J-Rod did, which was more in the coverage game and also you know picking his spots.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: So it's um I we'll see.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: I I need to see more out of it, but yeah, I don't think you know Romain definitely didn't pop out as much as I would have liked him to for one of your higher level transfers that came into the program this offseason.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: But hey, it's game one, and we'll see what happens in Corvallis.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I I think you know, a thing that we're gonna keep returning back to over and over again on any sort of Texas Tech forum, podcast, show is you know, we're gonna be talking about that 25 defense like we talked about the 08 or 2016 offense.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Like it's just like this mythical combination of players that did something that you'll probably never see again, or at least not until you know the all the stars aligned once more.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Because that that was that was arguably the best defense of the country last year.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: And that was at Texas Tech University.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: So like that's that's insane to say out loud.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: But the good news is you've already pointed out, dude, the the new legends are building.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: You know, we'll get once we get a few games in and they show some more lockdown performance of sub point uh uh sub-20 points allowed games, you know, you're gonna start talking about you know how how how wow, it's still great to see how much Mathis has really stepped up this entire season, or Ben Roberts has absolutely filled in those uh J.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Rodge Jews.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: So you really I think you're really gonna start seeing those legends build and let's kind of forget about comparing them every single time to last year's team and let them stand on their own.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Because I do think that's coming.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: I do think that uh Sheel Wood is building once again a beast of an offense who is going to tape things up this week.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Like you can count on things improving, even from an excellent uh performance against ACU against a slightly better Oregon State team.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: So I I think you're gonna be excited to see how they do on the road this Saturday, too.
- 27:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean you look at the stats and you're very pleased with everything that happened.
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: You only gave up 119 passing yards, you only gave up 75 rushing yards to you know the entire game to ACU, which is what you should do.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: You just wish you scored a little more in the red zone, and that we wouldn't even be really talking about you know being nitpicky here.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: But um, I I I'll give a final positive, and and if you have anything more on this game, I'll let you say your piece.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: But um, the crowd, the crowd showed out, and and you know, I obviously we're coming off a Big 12 championship playoff performance.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: You know, this is uh the best we've seen Texas Tech football probably in their entire history.
- 28:07SPEAKER_04: So, you know, the crowd is gonna show out.
- 28:09SPEAKER_04: But what I was really thrilled with is second half, you're seeing the crowd there.
- 28:14SPEAKER_04: And at these games, when we were in college before this, when we're playing an ACU and we're you know beating them pretty good, we're not necessarily blowing them out, but we're beating them pretty good.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: Everybody's not worried about the game.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: You start seeing the students leave, you start seeing some people kind of fill out, maybe it's hot, you know, whatever.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: We're not gonna we're not gonna maintain you know the same crowd level.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: But in that third quarter, that fourth quarter, they were there and they filled it out.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: And I was uh I was really happy to see that.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I think that's an excellent point, and we always love bragging on that Jones, aka Galaxy Stadium.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: So I mean let's let's hold that footnote real quick.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: But I think a few things have contributed to that increased uh crowd persistence.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: A, it the culture has completely changed.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Like, I think now you can say that Tex Tech is developing a winning culture so that that people want to see and be a part of.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: Like, no one wants to go to their home games and watch their team lose.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, during the 2010s, Tex Tech fans could count on their team losing.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Like you knew you were probably gonna lose every time you walked into that stadium, but now it's like we don't care who's walking through those doors, we have a damn good fighting chance of winning.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: And we proved last year that we're gonna win every single home game.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: So I think that that that home environments building, and it's kind of hard to understate this, but now you can buy beer and stuff in there, man.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: So it's it's not like I know, but like it's not like you have to leave to go grab another drink, you know.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: That's just little things like that helping improve the game day experience.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I'm 100% with you.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: It's it's just an awesome atmosphere in that beautiful new stadium.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: But speaking of the stadium, how distracted were you by the new field?
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Oh, not really.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: Not really, neither was I.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: No, I mean, I there's been enough.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's been enough time.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, the we've all we've discussed how the monster uniform looks like crap.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, the patch on it, the patch on the field, or the the bit on the field.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: Like it looks bad, but we've accepted.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: What are we gonna do?
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: There's three advertising, three corporate advertisements on the actual gridiron.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Progressive, monster, and galaxy.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: It's just it's it's odd to see that on the football field where before it was just the double T, the end zones of the conference logo.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and to be honest, I I I didn't notice it much.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: Uh like I I don't think I noticed the galaxy or the progressive stuff.
- 30:35SPEAKER_04: I know they were there, but I, you know, it's it's just kind of like when you're watching football, you kind of focus on the football.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: Um, and yeah, I mean, it it doesn't look good.
- 30:44SPEAKER_04: I hate the green on the red, I you know, but it is what it is.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: You know, that that that that's the worst part of it.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: But the other stuff, it doesn't really bother me that much.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Like, in my eyes, it's like, look, if you want if these comp if these companies want to sponsor tech and give us more money to put more winning teams out there, it doesn't really bother me that much.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not really a purist whenever it comes to like you can't have any advertisements around anything.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Like, look, this is an entertainment product, and the sponsorships are what the most of the revenue ultimately at the end of the day, because you know the media runs on ad revenue and all that.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: So, like, this is this is just this is just the name of the game.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but on a on a more positive note regarding the home atmosphere and all that, the I love the flat double T.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: I think this looks sick.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: And the helmets look sick, the feel looks sick.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Like, uh it's just the flat double T is just clean and classic.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: I'm all over it, dude.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Like, I I know those, like it was kind of uh an odd goodbye to the bevel because it's been there for such a long time.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: And we had some damn good teams on under that uh that bevel, but a lot of sadness too.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: So it's just good to see a fresh new face on the clean double tee.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: What'd you say?
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean I I hold the same stance that when we switched over, both of them look good.
- 32:02SPEAKER_04: And I don't I don't know if it was necessary per se to switch back to just flat double T.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: And I think it looks awesome on the helmets.
- 32:10SPEAKER_04: I think it I think the Bevel double T looks awesome.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: So it's it's you know, I'm cool with either, but yeah, I mean the flat double T looked great.
- 32:19SPEAKER_04: It looked great on all the uh different equipment on the um you know, on the little band things, on the fire cannons, on you know, the the uniforms, all that kind of stuff.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, it's not a bad look by any means.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: I I don't I still don't think it was necessary per se, but hey, it looks good.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: It's a new era.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: I think that's what we're really they're going for.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: Also, like I like the script tech on the helmet.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: I thought that looked sharp.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought that was a nice new touch as well.
- 32:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and you can't go wrong with the red, black, red.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: Or was it black, black, red, black?
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: I I'm I'm so ready to see red helmets.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they look good.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm ready, I'm ready to get those out there.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, it'll it'll be a clean look.
- 33:02SPEAKER_04: I mean, our uniform game is is solid outside of that stupid monster logo, but um, everything else looks great.
- 33:10SPEAKER_04: Um, anything else on ACU?
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Dude, I I know we were sitting here criticizing our team for the most part, but again, credit to ACU, dude.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: They come out there and they play.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Like that, that they came out there with a pretty good defensive plan.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: It really slowed us down.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: You know, it does take two to tango.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: It's not just us throwing the ball against the wind.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: There is another D1 team out there trying to stop you.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: So I they they they covered, they they held us below the spread.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: And they get they put up a pretty respectable score compared to what people expected.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: So hats off to Avalon Christian.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: I hope they turn things around and start putting some W's in that in that column.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: I'll I'll say Broom is a dude.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: That running back is a he's a dude.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: Like he's he's gonna play D1.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: I think he came from Boston College.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: Um, he's gonna be right back in D1.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Well, I guess ACU is technically D1.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: FBS Um here pretty soon.
- 34:03SPEAKER_04: And uh Driver, Christian Driver, Donald Driver's son, uh hadn't had quite the showing uh for 93 yards leading the team over there at ACU.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: And uh yeah, no, solid, solid performance from them.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, but definitely wanting to see a little more if you're a Texas Tech Red Raider fan.
- 34:21SPEAKER_04: But let's move on to the game coming up the game of the week.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: The Beaves.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: Some would say uh I would say it's the game I'm most ready to watch, but the Beavers of the Beaver State.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: The Beavers of the Beaver State, Corvallis, Oregon for this one.
- 34:41SPEAKER_04: I'll start off like this.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: Does this scare you that it's an away game?
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Honestly, no.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm not even scared.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, we were we were talking about how disappointed the just to touch on the ACU game to like kind of compare it is we were talking about how disappointed an output the ACU games, but I was never scared.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Like we were in control the entire time.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: And I think that no, even even if the offense has a little more red zone woes, while that might scare us for the future, I still don't think that there's anything the opposing team in Corvallis can do that's gonna put our defense off off kilter and fall over.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna they're gonna be held.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: And so my confidence level is strong on that.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Like offense, I think, is gonna improve, but I just think the defense is too good.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Houston travels, as Joey says.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Oregon State coming off a 22-33 loss to the Houston Cougars in uh Houston, Texas.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Tough uh tough road environment.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: I did you see the kickoff of that game?
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: So embarrassing, dude.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: Yikes.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: Houston.
- 35:56SPEAKER_04: Come on.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: It's so bad, dude.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: That's it was brutal.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like 50,000 students uh in your student section is that small, and you know that you're in the city, the fourth largest in the United States, and you can't get more people in there.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Stuff and the Texans aren't even playing yet.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Like, what are y'all even doing?
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: You had another week.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: No, it's too much.
- 36:18SPEAKER_04: There's there's B UFC.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: There's beaches, there's beaches.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: There's beaches.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: Do you hear about the beaches of Houston, Texas?
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Go swimming in that Houston channel, buddy.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: It was a brutal showing from the Koog fans.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: But it was not a brutal showing from the Oregon State Beavers.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: And you know, Oregon State gave Houston a bunch of crap last year, and Houston was a 10-3 ball club.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Like good team.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: They had to travel to Corvallis, and it was a one-touchdown game going down to the wire against a team that was clearly better than them.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: That's the only thing right now that worries me.
- 36:55SPEAKER_04: And new coach, new team, new everything really at Oregon State, but almost in the best way.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: And they had a great showing to the start of the year, you know, played it tight with a ranked team in Houston.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, they definitely have some players out here that that kind of spook me a little bit.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: So I I don't think I'm looking at Oregon State the same way that I was preseason.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Well, I they got a little spunk.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: And being at home might ex, you know, uh multiply that spunk.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: But I still believe that TechStech is a better football club than the Houston Cougars.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: And I think that uh I I I I think that all that spunk will be squashed.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, good.
- 37:39SPEAKER_04: Because I was waiting for you to say spunk for the third time.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Because that spunk seems to struggle against the rushing game.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: And that seems to be where we get really spunky.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: So if you're comparing the spunks, I think that their spunk just doesn't line up well against our spunk.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: It's like if you if it's it's like if you say any word too many times in a row, it just sounds bad.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: Like spunk already doesn't sound good, and then you just said it like seven times.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: So what's wrong with getting spunky?
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Like spunk is a good little quirky word to throw in your language.
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: Spunky sounds worse than spunk.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Why do you can't say the guy's spunk?
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: What's wrong with spunk?
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: We're talking we're we're comparing a fellow monster energy Big 12 conference team who was spunky at first, but then lacked spunk and was beginning to get outspunked.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: The spunk energy Big 12 conference would be would be something to look at here.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: No, I mean Oregon State had a great showing, right?
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: So they're starting a new quarterback, Braden Atkinson, who comes from Mercer.
- 38:47SPEAKER_04: You know the uh the mascot of Mercer?
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Bears.
- 38:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, lame, whoopee freaking do.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Where's you can't ask me the mascot and not know where they are.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: Is it is it northeast?
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: I don't know where they are.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: I don't know where they are.
- 39:12SPEAKER_04: Where is Mercer University?
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Alright, no, you you go on with your spiel.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna get Macon, Georgia.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: Macon, Georgia.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: Not not what I've not the Macon Bears.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: They're not the Macon Bears, they are the Mercer Bears.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: Um he got the starting gig over Malik Murphy, who started for Oregon State last year.
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: Former five-star.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: Former Longhorn.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: Former Longhorn.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: And I think that was a little bit of a surprise, but not so much of a surprise after you watched him against Houston.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: 376 yards and a touchdown, no interceptions.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: Pretty good showing for a first start coming from uh from a lower division of college football uh against a pretty darn good defense in Houston.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: So um definitely showed his stuff in the second half.
- 39:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, it took him a little bit to get going, as it does for a lot of younger quarterbacks coming into you know this level of college football.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: And uh he definitely picked it up.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: And I'm uh I was I was I was pretty impressed, I'm not gonna lie.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: Dude, they slung it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: They slung it on the on the Couggs, man.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: So uh a bit of behold on the Couggs uh defense there.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Something to exploit.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: What some could argue, some could argue.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: Um no, dude, absolutely super impressive uh showing, and like you said, OSU never died, OSU just wouldn't go away.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: OSC took him to the end to the wire.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure it was that Houston faithful crowd that pulled them over the finish line so that for the Kooks to get that W.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, we're kind of gassing up the the the Beavers here.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: Are you scared?
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: I don't love that this is a road game.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: Um I don't love that this is two time zones away.
- 40:59SPEAKER_04: And Oregon State, after watching that game, they got some guys.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: That's what I'll say.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: Like their rushing attack is pretty non-existent, but Houston's rushing defense is pretty darn good.
- 41:09SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, we got beat a couple times through the air.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: And you know, the Brendan Jordan thing, he's not gonna play again uh after you know serving his second game of the two-game team breaking team rules suspension, whatever that was, um, which kind of spooks me.
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: I think there were times that our corners kind of let ACU's receivers get open, and uh, you know, I I just I call it call it PTSD from all my time as a Texas Tech fan.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: But like Laramie, Wyoming.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like call it Laramie, Wyoming.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Pullman, Washington?
- 41:46SPEAKER_04: Call it Pullman, Washington.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: But when we take a trip over there into the Northeast, Northwest, not good.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: Nice job.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Good saying, thank you.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, see, I know.
- 41:59SPEAKER_04: I know, I know where things are.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Oregon State, that's in um Massachusetts.
- 42:07SPEAKER_04: It's Oregon State University of Massachusetts.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: Um, no, I mean they had a good uh Jesse Legree is a is a freshman wide receiver.
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: He had 136 yards and a touchdown against Houston.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be a guy that we will have to watch.
- 42:22SPEAKER_04: Um, Eric Olson, the tight end there with 54 yards.
- 42:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, they have some receiving threats and not having our what is, you know, we don't have last year's defense.
- 42:33SPEAKER_04: We're still learning, we're still missing some guys.
- 42:35SPEAKER_04: Brendan Jordan is not gonna play, Trey White is not gonna play.
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: Like you're missing some of the dudes that we were expecting to be top performers of this defense for this game for the second straight game, and uh, you know, you're just uh call it PTSD.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: Maybe I'm maybe I'm worrying for no reason.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm gonna call it?
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: It gives me a little worry.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: I'll all I'm seeing is that Braden Atkinson is better than Connor Wegman.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's what I'm seeing here.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: Wow the numbers don't lie.
- 43:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah?
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: And neither does uh Micah Hudson's face.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I mean this.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: He punched Connor, right?
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Or did he punch Marcel?
- 43:13SPEAKER_04: I don't know allegedly.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: I think it was Wegman.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: I think it was Wegman.
- 43:19SPEAKER_04: But I don't know.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: It could have been a backup.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: But Steve Steven, this these beaver rushers not good.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: They didn't do anything, brother.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: My lord.
- 43:32SPEAKER_04: They only rushed the ball 18 times all game.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: They gave up.
- 43:36SPEAKER_04: They clearly do not have it at the running back position, but sometimes you don't need it.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you can just sometimes you can just throw the ball 48 times and take Houston down to the wire.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: You know?
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: True that.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: But Houston had their way with them on the ground.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: That they did.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: That they did, and that's what I'm happy about going on.
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: I'm very happy about that.
- 43:57SPEAKER_04: Is that there's there's a couple things that travel Pretty easily, and that's the running game, and that's defense.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: And Texas Tech has a good good on both.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: Quite good, yes.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: Good on both.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: So, no, I'm I'm I don't think I'm actually worried.
- 44:12SPEAKER_04: I just think that due to the lackluster ACU performance and Oregon State maybe performing a little over the snuff to a good Big 12 team that we were expecting to be a potential.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Monster Energy Big 12 team.
- 44:27SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 44:28SPEAKER_04: A monster spunk energy Big 12 team.
- 44:31SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, I think it's got us all a little spooked, but to be honest, it's more looking back at what we've dealt with in the past versus actual analysis here.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, honestly, Steven, as you know, it's since it's only game two, you can only say so much about it on either side.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: Yep, Vortex Tech War Oregon State.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, honestly, I think we're gonna be happier coming out of Corballas than we were at Lubbock last weekend.
- 44:59unknown: Okay.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: I I feel like there's gonna be an increased confidence on the team, a more creative game plan as you're entering better opponents.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: And I just gonna think I just think you're gonna start seeing confidence in our in our players in what they're doing on the field.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: I I I just think that you know it's you can only take so much from week one.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: Like you don't want to overreact to week one, even when even when it's good, dude.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: If we blew out ACU, like sure, I mean that's that's great, but you're supposed to do it.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: You know, I hope you learned something from it.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: And the I guess the good news to pull from this is like you made a lot of mistakes, like special teams kind of stunk, dude.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Outside of outside of the the boys doing the main jobs, like you let a you let a you let someone take it to the house on a hundred yards to the house, and that's never a good sign.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's just hopefully got plenty of film room stuff to work with, and I think you're gonna see that pay dividends against this Oregon State team.
- 45:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and I mean, you know, looking at this in a firmly positive way, vanilla playbook didn't bust out a lot of cool stuff.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, a lot of what your offense actually is, um, you didn't see in week one against Abilene Christian.
- 46:08SPEAKER_04: So um I think I think we're looking towards a pretty good game.
- 46:11SPEAKER_04: I just don't think, you know, after watching what has been on film for this college football season, which is only one game for both, you know, you're not feeling super confident right now, but that could actually, you know, that could change pretty easily um going into week number two.
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: This is a 430 local kick, so doesn't make it's not one of those weird like West Coast games where it's popping on at like 9 30 p.m.
- 46:38SPEAKER_04: Central Time or something like that.
- 46:40SPEAKER_04: So, you know, we're gonna it's earlier in the day, and uh, I don't know if 4 30 isn't for us or no four 4 30 local, so 6 30 central time for us.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's awesome.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah, dude.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: 6 30 God's time, 4 30 indeed West Coast time, and uh yeah, we'll see how it plays out.
- 46:59SPEAKER_04: But I I'm excited, you know.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: Joey said something in the presser where he's like, I think we got over our road game woes, you know, minus the Arizona State game.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: And it's like, you know, I I think so too.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: Um, and and that's because you focused on your defense and you focused on your running backs, and uh, you know, like we said earlier in the pod, that's two things that travel pretty easily.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: We're gonna blow this team out, Steven.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: Woof.
- 47:24SPEAKER_04: How much?
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, I mean, I I forget what our scores were in our prediction.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: Do you do you have those in the in the notes?
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: No, I do not have those in the notes.
- 47:33SPEAKER_04: I was I know that I I had tech scoring a billion points in every game in my previous season prediction.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: So So I'm going, I'm going, I'm going uh I'm going 46-18.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 47:48SPEAKER_04: 46-18.
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: That's a that's a random score.
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: 17.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: 17.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: Give me 17.
- 47:56unknown: 46.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: 46-17.
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: I will go.
- 48:04SPEAKER_04: Man.
- 48:06SPEAKER_04: I'll go 42-14.
- 48:10unknown: Okay.
- 48:11SPEAKER_04: 42.
- 48:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I think I think we're gonna I think we're gonna take care of business.
- 48:17SPEAKER_04: I think we're gonna open up the playbook a little bit, and uh I think we're just gonna utilize our running.
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: Like, I think Cam Dickey and Jacoby Williams and and Quinn Joyner are gonna have themselves a game against the uh against the Beeves.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: So I say feed them boys, dude.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: It's working.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: You just you just let them munch.
- 48:35SPEAKER_04: All day.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: You get boring and do like some old school football crap, man, and you you just you just load up them boys, and you just get that crap moving.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: We want that classic Big Ten football.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's entertaining football right now.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: But who it's funny, it's whenever it's your table, you do not care if it's entertaining.
- 48:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I don't I don't care.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Just want to win.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: Skip the dub, maybe.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: But all right, dude.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: Uh any other any other thoughts on the beavers before we hit the next topic?
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: No, I think that's it.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: That's all I have for the beaves in Corballis.
- 49:05SPEAKER_01: Alright, dude.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna we're gonna pop them beaves uh with the oh, that's not bad.
- 49:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not good.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: That's not what I was I was I'll do.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: Maybe take that one gun.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: I was going, see, I was going for like, you know, where you have six shooters where you know the cowboys like pop them with the gun.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: The beavers, you pop in the beaver.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: That doesn't, it's not what I'm all right.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna work.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: So um yeah, that's my bad.
- 49:27SPEAKER_04: Uh move on.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: So you wanna do you want to recap the uh or to put on some thoughts about the what happened around the monster energy Big 12 conference?
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: I hate how you say it just to say it.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: What uh the monster energy obligated to do so.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: We're being paid a lot of money to do that.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: You're right, you're right.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: Brett Yormark has insisted.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: He's texting me right now, so are you saying it?
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Did you did you not say the monster energy Big 12?
- 49:55SPEAKER_04: Gun 16 strong.
- 49:57SPEAKER_04: Did you not did you not say?
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: It's about to be 15 strong if you don't say it.
- 50:02SPEAKER_04: Your UCF Knights showed out.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: My Bethune Cookman.
- 50:08SPEAKER_04: The cook they just have their their acronym on CBS Sports is Cook.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: Brother, they were cooked.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: Uh wow from the spot.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: I don't think we need to talk about that.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: But I mean, hey, they they had they did what they were supposed to because the FCS game.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: Like, if you compare something like that, if you're just going flat out like shock value, man, we look we look like we're in a we're the American team in the Big 12.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: The monster energy of Big 12 and not UCF.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that was a tough show.
- 50:40SPEAKER_04: How about the buffs?
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: The buffs, that was that was an awesome game.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: Like it was ugly as hell.
- 50:45SPEAKER_04: That was the most college football game.
- 50:48SPEAKER_04: That was the most Thursday night college football game, I think, of all time.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: It was.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: It was like, oh, it's so over for the buffs.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: And then they block they blocked that kick.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: Like it's just I said it was so over.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: I said it was so over for team A or team B, probably 16 times.
- 51:05SPEAKER_04: It's like it's so over for Georgia Tech.
- 51:08SPEAKER_04: It's so over for the puffs.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: They're so back.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: They're back.
- 51:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, nothing to know.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: That was a good win for Colorado.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: It might not mean anything, like truly, but like, because I mean, that looks like just a freak show of a game, but honestly, good for them.
- 51:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, happy, happy to get that one.
- 51:26SPEAKER_04: You know, Utah smoked Idaho.
- 51:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, your your boy the fighting Lighthold smoked uh what we previously established in the prior episode, Long Island University in New York.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: New York.
- 51:39SPEAKER_04: And and not Long Island University in California.
- 51:42SPEAKER_04: Long Beach.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: That does not be.
- 51:45SPEAKER_04: No, not just you.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: Just you.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: Uh Lance Lipold took care of business.
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: Um, West Virginia.
- 51:53SPEAKER_04: Look, the score doesn't look good, but West Virginia was up by like three touchdowns the majority of that game.
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: It's just but it was kind of like it was kind of like a beaver situation.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a little bit, a little bit.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: But instead of a beaver chopping at it, you had the blue chicken kind of getting feisty in there, dude.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: You had the shuntacleer.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: The blue chantecleer.
- 52:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh, not not great, not a great second half from uh from the Mountaineers.
- 52:20SPEAKER_04: We'll see as we they definitely weren't the most disappointing Big 12 team of the week, I can tell you that much.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: But who was?
- 52:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, we'll get down.
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 52:32SPEAKER_04: Oh, we will get there.
- 52:33SPEAKER_04: Just scroll down slightly.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, it's them.
- 52:38SPEAKER_04: Um Iowa State, great job beating SEMO.
- 52:41SPEAKER_04: Uh uh, great job.
- 52:43SPEAKER_04: Auburn, Dave Randa.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: Um what do you think of the call?
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: What did you think of that call?
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: I I didn't watch the game in real time, but I did go back and watch the replay and going to watch the watch the at least the extended highlight replay.
- 53:00SPEAKER_04: I was all for it.
- 53:02SPEAKER_04: Lagway was playing on a bum ankle.
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: You know, you made an incredible pass.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: Honestly, DJ Lagway threw like three or four just like incredible passes in that game.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: Like showed you why he was supposed to be this like highly tatted quarterback, but then you see the bad plays and you're like, Yeah, he like, what are you doing?
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: So very, very high highs and very low lows for for DJ Lagway.
- 53:28SPEAKER_04: But um, no, I like the call, and I mean it was a good call.
- 53:31SPEAKER_04: He was just two inches away from the end.
- 53:34SPEAKER_04: I mean, very like, but very short.
- 53:37SPEAKER_04: So, you know, it is what it is.
- 53:40SPEAKER_04: I like the call.
- 53:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's just Baylor's just not very good, I think.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: That's just it's it that's not gonna cut it.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: No, no, dude.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: This is a game at Dave Oranda.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: What's what's this year six?
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: You're you should be winning this game, dude.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: Against a year one Auburn coach, like you gotta be winning this game.
- 53:59SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, or like uh it's just gotta be happening.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: This guy's so cooked.
- 54:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, it's not good.
- 54:06SPEAKER_04: It's definitely not a good start for them, and uh not not leading to more good things for this about what we expected.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: They didn't get blown out or anything.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: Sure, they were competitive, but they lost to what's probably gonna be a middling at best, at best, SEC team.
- 54:19SPEAKER_04: So can I just say something?
- 54:21SPEAKER_04: Baylor, next week, you know, we're not gonna talk about it.
- 54:24SPEAKER_04: They play nobody, but week three, you know who they play?
- 54:30SPEAKER_04: Sonny Cumby and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: We like that, dude.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: Give them fire, that'd be funny.
- 54:37SPEAKER_04: Do you know how many points Sonny Cumbie and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs scored in week one?
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: Well, it's I I do not keep a little bit.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: 80 They put up an 80 piece on Northwestern State.
- 54:52SPEAKER_04: Listen.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: Not a good team.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: Goaded.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: But they they put up 80 on them.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about, dude.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: This year one back in the sunbelt.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: They're ready to cook, dude.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: Go Sonny Cumby.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: I hope that dude.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: I hope.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: I think he's kind of coaching for his job this year, too.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: Well, hell, you got a good opportunity to go beat the Bay of the Bears in week three.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: That'd be really funny, dude.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: One take a lump getting the other tech alone fired.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: That'd be funny.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: Would be funny.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: Cincinnati beat Boston College.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: Cool.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: I got that one wrong.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: Sick.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: Boston College stinks.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: So sick.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: But that's I mean, that's a that's a solid showing against a power four opponent on your first week.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm sure Boston College is a power four name only right now, but like that's that's that's pretty solid for Satterfield.
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: Cool.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: Way to go, Cincy.
- 55:46SPEAKER_04: Um all right.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: What well do you let's get past these first, and then we'll and then we'll go back.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: Uh Kansas State scored 71 points.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: Um beat nickels.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: Of Louisiana, correct.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: The Pride of Louisiana.
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: Nichols State, uh, 71 to 3.
- 56:05SPEAKER_04: Not not much to talk about.
- 56:08SPEAKER_04: Um BYU.
- 56:10SPEAKER_04: Whooped up on your boys from Dixie State.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: That they did.
- 56:14SPEAKER_04: Formerly, Dixie State.
- 56:16SPEAKER_04: Now Utah Tech, better name.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: Better name.
- 56:19SPEAKER_04: Um Arizona, cool.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: B it looks like a similar performance as we had.
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I didn't watch any of this.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: On scoreboard only.
- 56:30SPEAKER_04: I I didn't watch any of this.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: And uh hey, I mean I bet that's a very similar relationship, FCS to P4 program-wise, you know, and in-state, you know, probably maybe some similar players, you know, uh, like as in like transfer it away, upset of the big boy.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: But I mean, or Arizona's probably still a good team.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: And you again, you can't just you just can't take too much from week one except for the one we're gonna talk about.
- 56:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then uh Arizona State beat the Bears by 63.
- 57:02SPEAKER_04: That's the impressive showing the far and away most disappointing performance.
- 57:09SPEAKER_04: Even, I mean, this might eclipse, and this probably does eclipse the TCU performance that we saw in week zero.
- 57:15SPEAKER_04: Oh, absolutely.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: It sucks, but it's not a comparison, in my opinion.
- 57:20SPEAKER_04: Good lord, Oklahoma State.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Dude.
- 57:24SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: What the hell, man?
- 57:26SPEAKER_04: 24 to 10.
- 57:29SPEAKER_04: They scored 10 points on Tulsa.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Tulsa.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: Is OSU on a losing streak to Tulsa?
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: Is two a losing streak?
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: Or does it take three to be a streak?
- 57:42SPEAKER_04: It's a streak when it's Tulsa.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: Two years in a row, Steven.
- 57:48SPEAKER_01: Dude, so I I would I do want to be on record saying that I was confident that OSU was going to struggle this year.
- 57:58SPEAKER_04: You famously said that Texas Tech was gonna lose to Oklahoma.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: That was not me.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: I my take might be dumber, okay?
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: Than you than you.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: No, at this point, yours your take is dumber.
- 58:11SPEAKER_01: Like yikes.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Whatever you take a look at who tech's gonna lose to.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: But um still could happen.
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: I emoji.
- 58:18SPEAKER_01: Shush.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: Don't even put that in the air, brother.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Find some wood and knock on it.
- 58:23SPEAKER_04: But I already did, I already put it in the air.
- 58:26SPEAKER_04: The podcast two weeks ago.
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: But uh you cannot lose this game, dude.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Like, there's I I can't, there's no way I believe, and I'm I'm not this is no knock on Tulsa, but they're also a year one coach, I believe.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: New team.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: There's no way that they just outclass you at every position to lose by two scores.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: What what's that about, dude?
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: Like by 14 points, and you're supposed to be this offensive genius with this offensive powerhouse team, with this Heisman Dark Horse quarterback, arguably the best quarterback in the Big 12 men, he said.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Um Big 12 Dark Horse as well in general to win 10 plus games, and then you go to your local rival, little rival down the road, about an hour away, and just and it's a home crowd, it's mostly orange, I'm sure.
- 59:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and this is what you do stop to the tall server.
- 59:26SPEAKER_04: They're they're already dead.
- 59:28SPEAKER_04: Um I think this was the most surprising outcome of week one.
- 59:38SPEAKER_04: I really do like well, okay, maybe you mass wreckers, but even but even Wreckers, you just expect them to lose, you know, like seeing Wreckers lose, and I guess we've gotten used to seeing Oklahoma State lose the last couple of years, but you see what that program used to be, and them bringing in a new coach from a mean green team, basically that entire team, you know, coming to Stillwater and just absolutely laying an egg.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: It it never felt like they had any juice to get to begin with either.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: No, like it was flat from the get-go, and it never it never picked up any steam.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: It just they looked, they looked they looked absolutely uninspired out there.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Statistically, like from a just a pure uh sky view, the UMass uh win over Rutgers is worse.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: Like from a pure football standpoint.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: UMass apparently had lost 16 games in a row.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: But do you know which team is second in games lost?
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_04: Is it uh the golden hurricane?
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_01: It is their losing opponent, their little brother in the state, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, dude.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_01: Look at that.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_01: Look at that.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: I think that makes it 12 in a row games lost.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: I don't think they've won an FPS game in three years.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_04: They beat uh UT Dallas.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_04: I want to see.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think it was like the last win last season.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think it was like game one or game two, and it was actually kind of close.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, just a wow.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_04: What has that program become?
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_01: Was their last FPS win Arkansas?
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_04: That would be funny.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: That would be funny.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: I think, and I think that might be the case.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: Yikes, man.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: Oklahoma State, dude, you just gotta feel it just it doesn't make sense either.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: No, it doesn't.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_04: Nothing, nothing about it makes sense.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: Going in, like this this is a good quarterback.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_04: This is a pretty, you know, what we thought was a good coach, you know.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: Like I it brought in their running back.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: Caleb Hawkins is a good running back, and uh they just uh they got manhandled.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: And this is this is a program that's just better than this.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Like I'm not I'm not saying that Oklahoma State is a 10-win team every year kind of program.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_01: They're absolutely not.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: Very few are.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_01: Um, but you're just with your resources and your recruiting bed and your fan support, there's just zero excuse to be this bad.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: You're the worst FPS team in the country right now, and I don't think that's a stretch right now, like statistically.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: So just from the losses in a row.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's you're Kansas, dude.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: You're Kansas of the 2010s, probably worse in this current state right now.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: And that hurts the sale out because you know it's it's fun when they're good because they make a good uh rival to Texas Tech, you know, where they're both good, like that's good for the Big 12.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: But this is tough.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_04: Thank you for correcting.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: Uh you're welcome.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_04: They play Oregon next week.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: Brother, that's gonna be ugly as shit.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: Like that's gonna be adult approval television.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_04: It's not like Oregon impressed against Boise State, but okay.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_04: No, I know, I know, but and Boise State, good team.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: Boise exactly.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying probably threw everything they had at him.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_04: But for being but for being the number two preseason team, they did not, you know, put the performance that they should have against a Boise State.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_04: That being said, I just want to win it.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_04: Nearly state personal, not nearly as bad of a performance as Oklahoma State put out there in week one.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_04: And uh it's it's sad.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_04: It's sad seeing where that program's at.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: It just sucks because OEU is still kind of sky high right now, like rankings-wise and all that.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: They're not they're not you know the same dominant force they were, but they're winning that breakup in an absurd way.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_04: So So let me ask you let me ask you a question for next week.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_04: Oregon at Oklahoma State, Arizona State at AM, both kicking off at 11 a.m.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_04: Central Standard Time.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_04: Which one is on the fur which one is the click channel?
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_04: Or the uh the commercial channel, and which one is on the main?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, dude, Arizona State AM on the main.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_01: Dude, no, the organ, it's gonna be bad, dude.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's probably like it's gonna be like a 60 to 7 kind of game.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, what it was last year.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_04: It was just it was sad watching that last year, and I think it will be something similar to some shirt twirling in the stands again from the the origins of that tradition.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: You're gonna see it again.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: I bet you'll I uh I would literally bet money that that's gonna happen at the game.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_04: Let's hope.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, you also have Oklahoma at Michigan, which is uh gonna be a just destruction.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: We're not we're not a national CFP podcast, but it was it was kind of crazy watching the biggest robbery I've ever seen in football all fandom I've ever watched.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_04: You know, you know what it was?
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_04: It sucked.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_04: It did suck for for everybody.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_04: It sucked for everybody that's not a Michigan fan.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_04: It sucks.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: Even sucks for Michigan, dude.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: Like no, dude.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: I mean like that.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_04: They're just gonna yeah, they're just gonna win, and it's gonna always go down as a win, and whatever.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_04: We didn't lose.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_04: That's what it is.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_04: That's such and that sucks because Western Michigan deserved that.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_04: They won the game, and that was and that was upsetting to see, but it's like it's like it's dude, it's like it's not it's like that's not allowed to happen anymore in college football.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_01: Like it's just that that upset's not allowed to happen.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: Like, it's one thing if it's Rutgers, it's another thing if it's if it's Michigan.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Michigan, that would have been just so sweet for everybody that's not a Michigan fan.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_04: It would have just been the best.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_04: It's what we watch college football for.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_04: We want to see that, and uh, and the refs took it away from us, and that is very disappointing.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_04: Um, I won't be getting to watch, oh okay, BYU Arizona, first conference game of the season.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: season next week in provo.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_04: That will be fun and that will be something that I tune into.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_04: But uh it's hard to say right now.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_04: I I I got BYU just for being in Provo um in Arizona not not necessarily showing out.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_04: No, I think BYU will be a comfortable probably a uh really I think it'll be a tight win for BYU.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_04: I think I'll say uh I'll I'll give him 17.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_04: BYU beats him by 17.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_04: I got um okay looking forward to a good game we won't get to see a lot of the uh what are they called Cyhawk um oh yeah you're right yeah in Iowa City it's kicking off around the same time I think it's at the exact same time that text plan you know I think spunky are they spunky or are they not spunky?
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_04: We shall find out against uh the Iowa Hawkeyes but uh no I mean I I think Iowa State who they play Southeast Missouri could I feel like it has potential to be better than you would think it's a rivalry game exactly it's a rivalry game that it sometimes it really doesn't matter how good your teams are and Iowa is famously inept at offense so you can see some weirdness happen.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_04: I do not think they were inept in week one well no they only well they scored 40 scored more than we did but uh no I mean I'll watch the replay of it and then uh hopefully after we're seeing a Texas Tech winning for Vallis we can tune in to the Razorbacks going to Salt Lake City at uh 9 15 Central time an important game yeah I because I think uh Utah needs to beat the brakes off of this team like they need to obliterate them I think if I could have any win outside of tech next week it would be Arizona State over a M of course in college station but that's up there I think I'd I'd I'd take a Utah the Oregon one I mean that would be so funny that would be so funny.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_04: That would be funny if if Oklahoma State beats Oregon next week that would be the funniest out do you rank Oklahoma State not with an L in the Tulsa no you can't they would receive votes though yeah they would they would they get like five or six votes well I mean ultimately I want the Big 12 to win any of these games oh yeah I Utah I think Utah will I think Utah's gonna make Arkansas look silly Arkansas year one game the Arkansas might be the worst team in the FCC so you you gotta you gotta get in there and just make the Mahog squeal Oklahoma State is a 22 and a half point uh dog that's it I was surprised yeah that's I was I was expecting something in the 30s me too but I guess Oregon not necessarily impressive but again Boise State could just be good.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah you can just I think just surviving Boise is enough you know like I don't think you need to make a statement against Boise State I think you just got to win the game.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah yeah no I I I agree um but for being the number two team and being as hyped up as they were um not necessarily a great showing for the ducks in week one the last thing I'll say and this is just CFB in general kind of going back to the Houston Oregon state Houston's got some dudes man Houston's good dude no I know but like I didn't quite know how good Amari Thomas and uh and overmeyer were going to be Makai Hughes the running back like they got some dudes week three is going to be a toughie I I I think I think there's some parallels between Houston and us right now with the what the team is I think you're gonna see a couple of excellent defenses and just you're gonna see which offense has it more figured out in week three.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_01: Who can make the plays bingo and I don't know if it's an indictment of who is head and shoulders better than the other unless it's a blowout one way or the other of course I I just think that it's you're gonna see some b heavyweight boxers go at it dude very happy that that game is in Lubbock Texas me too I'm even happier that we're gonna be there yes for that game of the season um hey before before we wrap it up though I mean you kind of skimmed over the border war the famous Missouri Kansas game oh yeah is that is that peaking P I K your interest at all?
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_04: No not particularly I mean no and I don't necessarily think Kansas is like cooked or anything but I I don't I that's one of the rivalries that I'm like it was gone for so long that it's like now that it's coming back it's like okay cool.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_01: You just gotta cut out a spot on the schedule for it and those two schools do hate each other.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_04: Like it they they genuinely hate each other and that's cool and that's awesome and I'm glad that those rivalries still exist so you know I I maybe I'm maybe I'm being too negative but I I don't know I don't really care for that one.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_04: You're not from the the mid the Midwest yeah but I can center the country yeah but I can get down with a rivalry game you know but this one just never like does it for me.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know it's also it it it probably doesn't help that neither of them have a rich football history either.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_04: No like it's just you know that's they're they're obviously average generally speaking but it's it's you know it's not it's not like you know Texas Tech versus Abilene Christian yeah or Texas tech versus UTEP um by two um utep sucks um Washington City Kansas State any anything to talk about there before I'm just seeing the last of notes between no no I think washington state is fine uh who'd they lose to it's the TNT game by the way um oh they played the Apple Cup it was the Apple Cup so at least they lost to a good team so Washington I think is supposed to be pretty good so um that's kind of cool well opening up how do you feel about opening up the season with your biggest rival no you're out I'm out dude yeah I'm out here I mean if it's if it's like if that's like the only way we can schedule UT RAM sure let's do it yeah but no like I want to I want to be hitting it either game three or at the end of the season.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah no I hear you I hear ya definitely a a downer no go ahead what what about uh UCF in Pittsburgh your boys my boys of Central Florida looking upset the Panthers coming off a big win huh I think it's supposed to be a pretty good game oh I thought you said pretty good name like the Panthers it's like it's fine whatever but I think it's supposed to be a good I think it's supposed to be a decent game so I think we'll probably learn a lot about UCF in that game.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah I mean it's on the road it'll be definitely be a test and um you know not not Bethune Cookman um so you know we'll see how that goes but I I I'm rooting for the Knights I know you probably aren't but I'm rooting for them uh well I mean I want them to win do you and uh yes and our uh our uh our two private Christian college rivals are looks like they're playing both playing historically black colleges and universities here with uh prayer review a m and Grambleague State uh the Gramblers the Gramblers so I I I I what's the talk about here there's just nothing there's nothing I wasn't going to pray I know I don't know why I did but I I mean I just maybe for the potential that the prayer review AM Panthers I believe um looks like it will could get a random fired so that would say Grambling State Tigers Gramblers Gramblers in our heart the Gramblers they're nothing else but the Gramblers no I mean uh prayer view lost uh to Texas Southern by a million and okay all right yeah not good by a million literally seven million a million to zero um nothing else to talk about let's go to song of the week I was about to say dude like with this with is anyone still listening go go sundevils yeah go sundevils over whoever the heck that was um all right so my song of the week is I'm gonna do I'm gonna go with an old school altcountry guy who's you know obviously pretty legendary in the scene but I'm gonna go I'm pretty sure I've used a different version of the song before but I'm gonna go with a pub crawl and everyone's chanting this in the pub song because I just want to get that vibe going of good times with the uh with football being back drinking in the bars being with your boys it's gonna be The Galway Girl by Steve Earl Earl I love the pubs with the boys the pubs with the boys there's a lot of pubs you know because we're not British this is this is an Irish song because we're not Irish I'm sorry I cut you off what you were gonna say I like pubs oh there's less okay they're great yeah yeah everybody loves everybody loves a good pub my song of the week my song of the week is from uh a favorite between you and I uh definitely a favorite in the Texas country scene Red Shehan oh yes great came out with a new album uh fairly recently called Hardland my song of the week from that album is ghosts of the panhandle wind very very spooky very love and uh save that for October well shoot that would have been good it's almost October and that's my song of the week ghosts of the panhandle win red she hand you can heal in duns the other ghost of the panhandle wind all right dude the video Texas all country guys you know you know it love it no it's a great album everybody go listen to it um yeah great song but Tristan my friend we have finished recording this episode and I'm looking forward to playing the Beeves in Corvallis and I hope all of you are watching along with us on I'm gonna be planted on my couch watching this game at home yes be planted in the ideal situation of watching college football you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter Tristan's at Tristaners underscore Rodriguez follow the pod on twitter at talking tech pod we appreciate y'all listening and always always always wreck 'em tech wreck'em tech uh wow first of all uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan uh their program tough guys just uh a lot of fun this is wild when I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast and these guys have been tremendous I love you and I can't wait for this journey I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan this is incredible these guys have a passion and a love for this school
