- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Tristan, we have a guest today and a second episode this week.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we are doubling down.
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: We were making sure that your road trips for your Thanksgiving drives are filled with our nonsense.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: So thank you for tuning in for a second time, y'all.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: This actually wasn't too much nonsense.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: We had our good buddy Joe Goodman join us to talk everything Baylor, Texas Tech, from football to basketball to our favorite moments.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, it was it was great.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Joe's an awesome dude.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, great Twitter follow.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna shoot y'all over to that interview right now.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: Here is Joe Goodman.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: All right, so we are here with Joe Goodman, the Joe Goodman, on Twitter.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: He is the co-host of the Bear Den podcast.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: He is Baylor Twitter's heartthrob.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: He is the meme king, and he is dad of the year.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Joe Goodman, how are you doing today, man?
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: All of those are all actually factual statements.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: I've received official certificates from all the organizations that give out all those awards.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: How are you guys doing, man?
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: I'm it's a blast.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm stoked.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, Tristan had reached out to me a while back, and he all he did was he DM'd me.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: This was like two months ago, and he said, You know you're coming on the podcast when we play Baylor, right?
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: I was just like, Yep.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: Well, with the way this uh this Twitter relationship has blossomed over the memes and the uh the ribbing.
- 2:07SPEAKER_05: I just it had it was destiny.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: And after I heard that radio silky smooth voice of Joe Goodman on y'all's first podcast, I was like, Man, we gotta get some sex appeal on the talking tech pod.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: So yeah, because you know we we bring none of it, so so we're gonna get you on here, but um, yeah, man, we wanted to bring you on, talk about some uh the Baylor Texas Tech rivalry, otherwise known as the butt bowl, uh every single year.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: You know, we got the we got the game coming up.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, Baylor, Baylor's been pretty decent this year, I'd say.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech, not so decent, uh for the most part.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: Like, you know what?
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: I think you know what I'm gonna disregard that because I I think I think tech lands nicely into the decent realm.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Okay, you know what?
- 2:51SPEAKER_05: He's got a point.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: We are we are writing that 500 lines.
- 2:56SPEAKER_05: So is that not decent?
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: Is 500 not decent?
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: You know, I look at Texas Tech.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: You guys are like the you're the Big 12 measuring stick.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: If you're better than tech, you're probably pretty good.
- 3:06SPEAKER_04: If you're worse than tech, you're ass.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: Oh wow.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, man, that's see, but that would mean like 70% of the conference has been pretty good.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, I guess that's kind of the truth, but we have been so bad, man.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: It's only a way for me to tell Houston fans that they're ass.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: So there you go.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Perfect.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's that is true.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: That is true.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: That is true.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: You know, I can get down with the Houston hate.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: We won't get into that yet, though.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: But let's talk about yeah, yeah, let's talk about the game this year because Baylor, number eight in the latest CFP rankings.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I'd say that's pretty good.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Uh Baylor's Baylor wins, they're in the Big 12 championship.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Um with help, with a little bit of help.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, is do they need a little help?
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: It's not just so if we have if we we have to Oklahoma State needs to win.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: If Oklahoma State wins, then we get in.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: If we beat Texas Tech.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Okay, I gotcha.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: I thought, hey, whoa, whoa, there where's the trapdoor you're walking right over.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: Sheesh.
- 4:04SPEAKER_05: You never know.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: Trap door.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: We've already had one, okay.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: I don't need another, I don't need another Texas school hopping up and getting me out of the war, dude.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, I mean that that would be sick.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: I would so much.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: I mean, not obviously beating us wouldn't be sick, but like if if if the inevitable has to be, you know, come to reality, I would have much rather it be Oklahoma State versus Baylor in the Big 12 championship than OU versus anybody.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: So if we can walk the Sooners out, I'm kind of game.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, year one, right, of of the hateful eight really coming together to to just just crap on Texas and Oklahoma.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: It would just be such poetic justice if neither of them got to participate in the conference championship game.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: Well, Joe, I don't I don't think there's really a path that UT can find at this point to get there.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: So I think we're good on Texas not making never never discount Texas' ability to like sneak their way into anything.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: I I hear they have a lot of money, so you know who knows?
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, did y'all hear that they make a lot of money?
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: You know, no matter how many games they lose, you know.
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: That's that's that's very cool, very epic.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but okay, so what's the what's the latest with Bohanan?
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Is he is he gonna miss this game?
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Is he is it looking trending towards he's gonna play?
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: What what's the latest there?
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: So uh David Randa's being a little coy with that.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: He's he's called it day to day right now, but he he pulled his hamstring, and I am no athlete myself, but the athletes that I do know all say, like, oh, that's not probably good.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure I'm sure David Randa is doing a little bit of gamesmanship to keep Sonny Cumby on his toes, but I would expect as a tech fan to see uh Blake Shapin starting for us.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: So Shapin, tell us a little bit about him because he played he played what about half the game last week.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, what's what's what's going on with him?
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: What is he, what are his strengths, what are his weaknesses, what do you know about him?
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: So I would call him like uh Charlie Brewer 2.0, but kind of good.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: Um okay, so that's better.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like you know, you you see a guy walking on the field wearing number 12 and kind of scrambling around and making making a few throws here and there.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: It gave every it gave every one of us just a little bit of like, hey, is this like freshman Charlie Brewer when we had hope?
- 6:16SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, I mean he's a red shirt freshman, and to be honest with you, like I really didn't know much about him um before he came in.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: We had uh the QB battle that everybody expected this year was between uh Gary Bohanon and Jacob Zeno, who uh you know Zeno was kind of the guy that I think most fans wanted to see get the job.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: He had a big cannon of an arm, and we all really expected Bohanan to be more of um a running style quarterback, but then um Zeno actually got beat out by Shapen for the number two spot for the backup role, which is why he ended up transferring.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: So I think the the consensus around the fandom after watching how Shapen performed in that K-State game was okay, now we can kind of see um why he passed up Zeno.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: Uh his biggest thing to me, like, even there's a lot of intangibles that I take from the Baylor team this year.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: And my biggest thing is he he reminds me of Gary a lot in that he's just so calm, even especially for a freshman.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: I think that's something that um Aranda really like that kind of rubs off from Aranda on the rest of the guys that are on the team, um, which is great to have like a young quarterback who just seems cool, calm, and collected.
- 7:25SPEAKER_04: Um, he kept the offense together and won that game for us.
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: So um I think I think he's not as good as Bo Hannon, and I'd be way more comfortable if Bohannan was ready to go, but I'm expecting Shapin to start.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think I think he should do pretty good.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, we we definitely know a thing or two about playing backup quarterbacks, as we are on number three, possibly even four at this point.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: Well, four is four is ten.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, ever since uh ever since Alan Bowman, it's just been like, hey, king backup school, I guess.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, I I I mean, you really haven't you have such a good defense over there in Waco that it's not really, you know, Bohannon's been good, he's been really good this year.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: I think uh, you know, you got some explosive receivers, and then the running backs, I mean, are are fantastic in Abram Smith and uh um Trestan Ebner.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: But uh the defense, I'm for me, I'm curious because you know they've been solid, but they've given up games.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: You know, you had like the TCU game and and everything like that.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: What's the weakest part of this defense potentially that's a little fluky?
- 8:31SPEAKER_04: Absolutely the deep ball and and the secondary in general.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: So, really, what happened in that TCU game to our defense was our pass rush didn't get home, and um oh, what's his name?
- 8:42SPEAKER_04: Morris um turned into like a little like miniature version of Johnny Manzel just scrambling around throwing prayers up there, and they would just land in a receiver's hands.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, that's like that's our biggest thing.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: Like, if you can protect and keep our pass rush from getting home, then you're going to have big plays down the field, and that that's how teams have had success against us.
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: You can't really run the ball against us.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: Um, it I say that while like thinking about having nightmares to what Brees Hall did to us, even though we won that game.
- 9:10SPEAKER_04: But it's impossible to stop that man.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: But yeah, we've we've been able to stop the run pretty much with everybody.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: Um, definitely our secondary is is the kind of the key to coming out and scoring on us.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: Man, I'm so glad that perhaps the success of tech pulling an upset relies on a quarterback playing well and passing well.
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: It's so good to be on your third or fourth string to be having that happen rather than just handing it off to your running back.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: But uh it's it's like likes even said, I mean, this this this this defense is no joke.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: So uh with the way we struggled against Oklahoma State, I mean, getting shut out that just doesn't happen at tech.
- 9:43SPEAKER_05: So and then Baylor's is like almost as good as Oklahoma State.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: So it's just it I we don't feel great about that kind of matchup.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, tell me what happened last week because it's just you know, I still I still have memories of of old tech offense.
- 9:57SPEAKER_04: So seeing that zero there was just so foreign to me.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Well, first off, it was a night game in the Jones, so that means we're gonna lose, uh, of course.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Uh it's been that way changed, it's been that way for the last five to ten years.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I don't even know.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I mean, Donovan Smith was rattled.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: That was basically he was rattled early, and I I mean, we couldn't run against them at all.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: Uh, so you know, we had to we were forced to maneuver, and Donovan Smith was just very, very bad.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Um, that game.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: It was a weird flip, you know, from Iowa State.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: He was throwing dimes, and now then now he just couldn't get out of his own head.
- 10:34SPEAKER_05: Didn't mean to cut you off, just like just had to include that with just the weird mirror shift he did.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean our our O-line was truly, truly awful.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, what one of the worst O-line performances I've seen from a team this year was in that Oklahoma State game.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: And like Tristan said, Oklahoma State's defense, none to mess with.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: They're fantastic, but uh yeah, we just couldn't do anything about it.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: The thing about this Baylor game, the matchup that I'm most, you know, ready to see is y'all's running backs versus our defensive line because we've had our games this year where we've given up uh a fair share of rushing yards.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: That see the Texas and the TCU games, but these last couple weeks, we've actually done a pretty decent job on the run.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: You know, we held Brees Hall to 2.8 yards a carry in that Iowa State game, did pretty good against uh Jalen Warren and those guys from Oklahoma State.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: So I'm curious to see if that holds up or if you know y'all get the running game going like you have been and just cream us.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, the way to stop our running game is just stay home in your gaps because just Jeff Grimes, our offensive coordinator that we brought over from BYU this year, he runs the wide zone, so it's it's a lot of cutback stuff.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: It reminds me if you guys ever watched like the Texans back in the early 2010s of of the way Ari and Foster used to run the football, where it was like one foot in the ground and cut.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: So that's what you'll see a lot of.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of cutback lanes that Abram Smith will hit.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Um, and then when Ebner's in, watch out for the options.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: So they've started doing like a little bit of a speed option with him to get him in space.
- 11:58SPEAKER_04: But I I am really interested because like Brees Hall still gives me nightmares thinking about him, and you guys are somehow found a way to shut him down.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: It's almost like the the getting Matt Wells out of town gave your gave your boys new life.
- 12:12SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 12:13SPEAKER_05: I don't I would I seriously I do not think we're bowling right now if if Matt Wells is still head coach at Texas Tech.
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: So I don't think that upset happened.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: I'm so on you guys's side with the battle that your fan base is having with national media right now regarding like I've seen like Stu Mandel like will not stop harping on the fact that oh they're bowl eligible now and they let Matt Wells go.
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, did you see how lethargic that fan base was while he was there?
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Like, even if they won a game, they were like, uh, we still have Matt Wells.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it just wasn't, yeah.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: You go ahead, Tristan.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: I mean, you you've you've seen it from the start.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, you you saw how there was you know no excitement about him coming to Lubbock, and everyone and whenever he was hired, no one really knew that this was coming, you know, like no one thought Matt Wells was on the list.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: And it was Matt Wells really on anyone's list at that point.
- 13:02SPEAKER_05: And I mean, not to not, yeah, it's just like it's it's not to knock on him.
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: Obviously, he deserves a shot because if Kirby thinks so, but man, you're totally right.
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: Like, there's no fan support behind the program.
- 13:12SPEAKER_05: The guy just could not, he didn't have the charisma to stay around either.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: Like, I made that joke about uh, you know, what say a nice thing about Waco, but the way he couldn't even say a nice thing about Lovick.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: It's just the guy, the guy found every way to hold an L.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: So, like, that just makes it mean that means Kirby kind of looked at this and was like, All right, I brought in like the super nice guy that is just uh, you know, uh a nothing, just no personality whatsoever.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: And you brought in the guy that is most notable as a coach for tweeting out uh Ric Flair gifts.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: So yes, just the complete opposite in all ways from Matt Wells.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, getting a Texas guy uh in Joey Maguire, uh a recruiter, like through and through Matt Wells, one of his biggest downfalls.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: He didn't recruit, I mean, at all.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Sounds familiar.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: He yeah, he relied basically all on the transfer portal.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: He had about, I mean, we had like the ninth best class in the Big 12 coming in this year, so uh yeah, recruiting flaws, uh, game management flaws, just about everything wrong.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: You can have you ever heard of a guy kicking a field goal on second down?
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: Have you ever heard of that before?
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: Because God, I don't know how many liquor bottles I went through after that.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Oh my lord.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, was that in the Jones?
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: I think wasn't it?
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: I think it was TCU, yeah uh yeah, because we might have TCU, yeah.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: We could because we played TCU at their place this year, so yeah, that was that was in the Jones.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Uh just a good move all around.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, let's not talk about Matt Wells anymore.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's let's talk about let's talk about the exciting the exciting part of this.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: What what was each of your just like immediate reaction when you when you saw on Twitter or you got the ESPN alert that Joey Maguire was coming to Lovick?
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: I was I was kind of trained at that point to be excited about it because you know, a whole bunch of people that we look we like around the Love Experience uh were obsessed with the guy up to that point.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: Their hashtag hire maguire like was really going around.
- 15:06SPEAKER_05: So, you know, I the more I thought about it and the more the I thought about his character and like what he was, uh, it was just so different than what we're used to.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: So I was really excited about it.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: I I was I was pretty damn pumped.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: What about you, Steven?
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean it was like a process, it wasn't just like Joey Maguire came out of nowhere.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: We had there's a couple guys in the uh in the Texas Tech Twitter sphere and everything like that, uh, that really kind of got this going and got it got people knowing who he was, uh basically.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, when we're going down the list of candidates, we're like, okay, Jeff Traylor, okay, uh Sonny Dykes potentially, you know, those would be cool.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: And you know, Jeff Trailer signed the extension with UTSA.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: So we're like, I don't know, you know, Sonny Dykes, I guess, but uh Joey Maguire just ended up being the dude.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, he he attracts everybody, he's he's one of the coolest dudes, he's the most energetic guy in the world.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: So, of course, we're gonna rally around it.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: But uh, yeah, I was hyped when we when we decided to hire him.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'll say I absolutely love with every ounce of my being the person that is Joey Maguire.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: He's an absolutely an amazing human being.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Um, just you like you guys nailed it, right?
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: Like he's he's an insane recruiter.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: Um, the the biggest thing that y'all are gonna notice with him, and and let me tell you this do not do not worry when you get a two-star.
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: Like when you'll get like these random, like two, three or guys that aren't even ranked at all.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: He gets that stuff because like high school coaches, when their kids are getting under-recruited and they're like, I see something special in this kid, they pick up the phone and call Joey.
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and they're like, Look, you know, AM, SMU, Baylor, like whoever it is in Texas isn't paying attention to this edge rusher.
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: I have I'm telling you, you put 20 pounds on him, he's gonna be all conference.
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: Those are the phone calls that Joey gets.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: That's that's so cool that you brought that up because we just had a player that just went through that, man.
- 16:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we just we just tried to uh like yeah, unranked.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: He's an unranked cornerback, and we're just like, okay, you know, we've gotten three and four stars ever since he got here.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then we get this unranked guy, and we're like, This is the this is the guy that Joey Maguire might have, you know, an idea about that the rest of us don't.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: And that's part of that, too, is the the unsung part of this hire that I don't think has been talked about enough.
- 17:16SPEAKER_04: And that's you guys took James Blanchard from us too.
- 17:19SPEAKER_04: Um, and he, you know, he was kind of our head of scouting, and that dude, that dude right there is one of the kind of like scouts that knows exactly what kind of system is being run, and he finds the kids that fit into it, right?
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: He's not out there just being like, Well, let me grab all the four and five stars that I can.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: He's sitting there going, That safety fits exactly the way that we run want to run our defense.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: Let's get him in here.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: No doubt that guy's been in cru.
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: Oh, pardon me.
- 17:44SPEAKER_05: Well, he kind of went down top there.
- 17:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, no, that guy's been insanely impressive, man.
- 17:49SPEAKER_05: I love I've loved his energy as well.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: You can definitely see see he's a Joey Maguire guy, so I'm so glad he brought he brought him with him.
- 17:54SPEAKER_05: And his Twitter's electric as well.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: And I it's just so cool.
- 17:58SPEAKER_05: It it the recruiting is already different because you just see how these two guys just make an experience for these guys when they come to campus, and it's just different, man.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: I've never seen anything like that, and that's what got me so excited about this hire.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's like he I loved his first press conference with you guys when he just like got it and he just did the raider power, like yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: And that's really like even even if he failed, like even if he fails, like he's going to be raw raw Texas tech until the day they make him clean his desk out.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: And he looks like I'm sorry, Zach.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's that not Zach, Steven.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: Sorry.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: I've been your co-host here for about several.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: You think you know my name?
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: Sorry about that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: No, uh, I was just gonna say because um he he's everybody just moves to him like a magnet.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, he has rallied this fan base in a way that I haven't seen really from not even, I mean, Cliff rallied the fan base when he was hired because he was, you know, Tech's Golden Boy, he's the former quarterback, you know, this handsome young coordinator, offensive genius, all that sort of stuff.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: But uh Joey's done it in a way that I haven't really seen, and I'm I'm excited for him.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: I did have a question for you in particular about Joey McGuire because um there were rumors, and tech fans like to overreact when this kind of stuff pops up.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: But I'm wondering if it's true.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, after Matt Rule left for Carolina, uh was and Joey was you know, in consideration there for the head coaching job, was he like the fan's choice over Aranda?
- 19:27SPEAKER_04: So I wouldn't say like over Aranda.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: Aranda was out of nowhere.
- 19:30SPEAKER_04: Like, I didn't I didn't think Aranda was on our radar personally.
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: Um, and that's kind of how Mac Rhodes works, right?
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: Like, we didn't nobody expected Matt Rule.
- 19:38SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, he got interviewed for the job and he was absolutely the player's choice.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: There were tons of players on Twitter that were tweeting out hire McGuire.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: A lot of us were myself included, were very much banging the Joey Maguire drum to have him get hired.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: Um, the people that I think were against it were just kind of like he's only been in college for a couple of years, he has no like even coordinator experience.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: Um, the fun thing that happened there though was when they hired Aranda, Tom Herman actually came after Maguire and wanted to bring him to Texas and kind of part of his Hail Mary move to keep his job.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: And Aranda convinced him to stay.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: And I think that was huge just for the transition period from rule to Aranda was Aranda getting guys like Joey Maguire and other coaches, like Sean Bell, our quarterback's coach, right?
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: Um, he was a rule guy, he's a Baylor guy that's been around um forever.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Joey brought him in because he was a high school coach at that time, and and we got like a guy like Sean Bell to stay.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: So Aranda getting him to stick around was huge, and it kind of I think goes to show the little bit like the small ego that that Joey has, right?
- 20:45SPEAKER_04: Like, how many guys are going to get passed over for a job and then just okay, I'll work for the guy that got hired over for me.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: I uh like I I've only heard good stuff until you know Joey had the comment about the the attendance at the football or at the basketball game, whatever it was.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was every every Baylor fan was more than happy for Joey Maguire until he said that, and then it seemed like everybody turned one slip up.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: So the way I described it, the way I've described it to people is I love Joey Maguire the person, and from now on, I will hate Joey Maguire, Texas Texas Tech head coach.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: No, that's how it should be, man.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: That's how it should be.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Right, yes, man.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: I love I I loved that he said it because I don't know if you guys saw, but after he said that, um, there was like a pro football folk or college football focus or something, whatever tweeted about our offensive line and and where it was ranked nationally.
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: And our offensive line coach Eric McTeos tweeted great greater than hype.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: And like we all knew that was a direct shot at Joey.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: And it was just oh, it was.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: I love that there's like this fun little rivalry brewing in the background now.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Because I mean, you know, the Texas and all you were leaving, we're still here, we're the rivalry.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Week game, you know, we got to build this up a little more.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: We got to build up.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: We got the butt bowl going, but let's get it really going here with Joey McGuire.
- 22:09SPEAKER_05: It was a mistake putting the game in Dallas.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's always been a rivalry, but like you kind of sanitize the game when you put it in an NFL stadium like that.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: You know, you gotta be home and home.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 22:19SPEAKER_04: And and to be honest with you, like Baylor is a fan base that generally speaking, we have to be good to pull attendance.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: And I think tech to a similar degree is the same.
- 22:29SPEAKER_05: It's it's a pretty general rule, you know, yeah.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: You know, like unless you're talking, you know, BYU, Notre Dame, like those schools that just have national followings, it's tough.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: So I felt like there was never an opportunity when we were playing in Dallas or Arlington that both teams were really good and we would all show out to that game.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: It was always one team was kind of garbage and the other team was okay or pretty good.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: FL stadiums are just just not the place for college football, especially indoors and all that.
- 22:57SPEAKER_05: It's just they it's on they're on they're on campus for a reason, and it's just you know, I it's hard to it's hard to for tech fans to go to Waco and you know, bailiff bands go to Lubbock, you know, interact with each other in the community, and then it's just that's how you foster that kind of stuff.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: And I just absolutely man, it's what makes it like it's such a unique and amazing sport.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: I I love college football more than I love NFL.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Oh for sure, and I and I probably love college football more than any other sport, like major league baseball and college basketball are up there, but college college football is just something so different and special.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Although I will I will say yeah, yeah, I will say I watched that Cedon Hall, Ohio State basketball game last night and just got rehyped again for college basketball because it was just like a tournament game this early in the season, and I'm like, and you know, tech's been good, tech's been much better at basketball than we have at uh at football these last years.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: Baylor's been okay too.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: Baylor's been all right.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: We win a couple of games average line.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: We win a couple of games.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: We'll actually talk about that here in just a second, but we got to get score predictions here for uh for the game here this Saturday.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: Uh Joe, we'll start with you.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: So Baylor's a 14-point favorite in this game, but I do believe Shapin's gonna play.
- 24:06SPEAKER_04: So I think we're gonna rely really heavily on that run game.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: I think Aranda is gonna try to do everything he can to keep possessions low, control the clock, control time of possession.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: So I don't think this is gonna be like a huge blowout.
- 24:17SPEAKER_04: I don't think we're gonna be seeing any 70-point scorers here.
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: So I'm gonna go with a uh 35-17 Baylor win.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: Okay, Tristan, what do you got?
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: I was like right there with Joe.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say 38 Baylor, 17 tech.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Okay, see, so I I thought about this long and hard, and I'm like, hey, you know, Baylor's probably gonna win, but I don't want to predict that.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: I just don't.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: I want to predict uh my team pulling the upset here.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: That's me every week in my podcast, baby.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: I said eff it 35-31 Texas Tech Red Raiders, uh kicking out Baylor's title hopes uh week 12.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I got.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: So I had a little spicier take there, but uh, you know, I just I I want to see a good game first and foremost.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: I know we're probably not gonna win, but you know, I hope we play hard because uh this is this is a game I care about.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 25:09SPEAKER_05: And uh obviously before we move on from football and stuff, because uh we we got other stuff to dig into.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, it's it's been incredible Baylors being able to hide hire these coaches that have turned uh these seasons around within two seasons.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: I'm so jealous of it.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: I I'm hoping this we're we're copying that formula but hiring a Baylor coach.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: I'm hoping that's that same blueprint, gonna love it.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: But you know, obviously with success comes attention.
- 25:32SPEAKER_05: And I know I know you know where this is going, but uh you know, eyes are gonna be on Dave Aranda.
- 25:38SPEAKER_05: Do you what do you what do you see in this like kaleidoscope that is this insane coaching cycle coming up?
- 25:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude, it is it's a crazy year in the coaching cycle.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: And I'll start by saying there like I'm fully aware there is no loyalty in this sport, right?
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: Um, with a few exceptions.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: I believe Joey Maguire when he says I will die at Texas Tech.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: Like, if if you guys will have him, Joey Maguire's the kind of dude that'll never leave.
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: Based off of everything that Dave Aranda has said since he's been here, he I think he just he got tired of the major football machine, right?
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: The guy had coached at Wisconsin and he had coached at LSU and won a national championship there.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: Um and you know, he is actually a pretty religious guy, so I think that played into him taking the gig.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: Um, but I feel like David Rand is really comfortable where he's at, right?
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: And I know, and again, I know this is gonna be like, well, of course he says that he's a Baylor fan.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh there's there's a couple of things here.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: One, he's got a bunch of money that he gets to play with now because we've had some major donations and we're getting some even newer football facilities that he gets to have full control of.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't think he's gonna move his family after two years.
- 26:45SPEAKER_04: Again, they've bounced around the country a lot, and I think he's ready to settle in.
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: But a big key for me, and people have told me I'm crazy for thinking this, but just the way I see Joey Maguire working and the way that I see David Randa, I think I feel like he's a very open and honest guy.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think Joey Maguire really cares about the players that he coaches and recruits.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: When Joey Maguire went to Texas Tech, I fully stopped worrying about David Randa leaving because I feel like Joey Maguire knew that he would have had the opportunity to interview for the Baylor job again um if David Randa were to leave.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: And I think he had a discussion with David Rand before he accepted the job.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: Um, because A, I think he could have interviewed for it, and B, I don't think Joey would have wanted to see those kids go through yet another coaching change because we've had what four head coaches in six years now.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: Um, and like Jalen Peachy, Terrell Bernard, those kind of kids that have been on this team for a long time.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: Um, they had Matt Rule, they've had Dave Aranda, and I don't think he he wanted to see them go through that again.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: So I think Joey went knowing that the kids were gonna be taken care of.
- 27:51SPEAKER_05: That's a great way to look at it.
- 27:52SPEAKER_05: And I never even thought about the the the Joey McGuire relation to that point because you're absolutely right, he probably absolutely would have been interviewed if uh Dave Viranda was picked up.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: And I'm kind of leaning towards you.
- 28:03SPEAKER_05: I I personally I don't think Dave Aranda is gonna leave this season.
- 28:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, like you said, it's two years, and it's not like Baylor is like a G5 program.
- 28:10SPEAKER_05: You know, there's definitely money behind his contract, there's definitely energy, uh, a lot of stability there.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I don't think he's gonna leave either.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: So that's why they build something new again.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, no doubt.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: I I I think the only thing that should that would worry the Baylor fan base right now is because we've now seen James Franklin sign uh the 10-year deal with Penn State.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: We saw Mel Tucker sign the 10-year deal with Michigan State.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: You're kind of running out of uh of hot names out there right now uh that are popping up.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: And Dave Aranda's name, I think, keeps getting a little hotter each and every week as Baylor does well.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and so, you know, especially with like a team like LSU right now that has Scott Woodward as their AD, that only goes after big names, you know, he's gonna start looking at a guy who was on their title team here a couple of years ago.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm sure he's already reached out to Dave Aranda.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: Like you, I don't necessarily think he's gonna leave.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: I don't want him to leave.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: And that's not even that's not that's just me being a fan of a team that just had their really good head coach leave for another program.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: I don't want that to happen for Baylor because I, you know, I just don't like it when it happens.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I'm not rude.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: I like it when everybody's good, man, with the exception of TCU.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm I'm I'm cool if they never win a game again, but man, when the rest of this conference is good, uh, it's the best.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: And like and like Stephen was saying, just at like an emotional level, it's it's it's not cool to see money rule the sport like that.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: So it's and it's so it's it's it's I we all I think we all hope he stays, and it's it's good for Baylor, it's good for the conference.
- 29:46SPEAKER_05: So, especially with this this transition we're gonna go into.
- 29:48SPEAKER_05: And I we'll talk about the the new Big 12 later, but uh so it sounds like we're on a pretty much consensus here.
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: What's what's next on the deck there, Steven?
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: Next on the deck, I told you I told Tristan to tell you, Joe, to bring your favorite moments from the butt rivalry.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, we gotta know you gotta you gotta have your favorite moments, Tristan.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: So I have I have two specific.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: So when when when he said, like, hey, you need your you need your favorite, like there were two that immediately popped into my head.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I'll go with like the less fun one, and this is just more personal, is 2014, okay, which was uh that was Patrick Mahomes' freshman year, I think.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and yes, and that was our freshman year, yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was our freshman year, yeah.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: And he threw for like 600 yards, I think, against us, and we barely squeaked that one out.
- 30:32SPEAKER_04: Bryce Petty, I think, got a concussion in that game.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: Seth Russell came in and didn't really play that great.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: Y'all made like a huge comeback in the second half.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: But the reason that game's important to me was that was the first year of the playoff, we were in the heat of the playoff hunt to get to the top four.
- 30:48SPEAKER_04: And one of my best friends in the world is an Ohio State guy.
- 30:51SPEAKER_04: He went to Ohio State and he invited me to go to the Ohio State Michigan game that year in Columbus.
- 30:56SPEAKER_04: So I flew to Columbus, went to that game, and I ended up watching the Baylor Tech game that night in a Buffalo Wild Wings in Columbus while everyone around me was wearing Ohio State gear, cheering their asses off against Baylor.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: Like here's this like random dude in Baylor gear sitting in the middle of Columbus while they're actively rooting for tech because they need us to lose a game, uh, because they wanted to jump us.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: So that was that one's always been a special memory for me.
- 31:22SPEAKER_04: But my favorite ever like play in the history of the butt bowl is 2010 in the first quarter.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: Um, you guys tried an onside kick against us that went eight yards.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: So it's officially in the book as an eight-yard kickoff.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: And because it didn't travel 10 yards, your whole kickoff team just stopped, thinking, like, oh well, damn, we can't pick it up.
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: It didn't go 10 yards, and you just kind of stared at the ball.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: And Terrence Ganaway, one of our running backs, picked it up and just ran it back because you guys all just stared at it.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: That is some elite Tupperville stuff right there.
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so we I think in the books it's officially an eight-yard kickoff for a 38-yard return for a touchdown.
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: You know, we had we had two of those because I think we had one against Iowa State too back in the day, where they just returned one of our onside kicks at the end of the game when we thought we had a chance and it was ruined.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: And you know, so maybe never try an onside kick again if you're Texas Tech, maybe.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: But that's funny that you brought up the the 2017 game because I had that as an honorable mention.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, or was it 2014 game?
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, because that I wrote that down because that was our freshman year.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: We're four and seven, Baylor's nine and one.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: I you know, we're just like, whatever.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: That's the first time we really knew what Patrick Mahomes was because that was his that was his fourth start, and you know, he played, he got uh he was kicked out of the UT game because uh he get you took a bit, he took a bad hit.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Um and then we go in nine and one, Baylor, there's no chance, and then he just freaking goes.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, unbelievable.
- 32:57SPEAKER_04: Just I have it up.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: He had he was 30 for 30 for 56 for 598 yards and six touchdowns.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: It was unbelievable.
- 33:06SPEAKER_03: And I think we might have been at that game.
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: I think we were at that game, Tristan.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: Um, because we we we went to like we I think we went to at least half we went to two of them.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: We went to two out of the four years we were there, but uh I remember that last touchdown that we caught uh to Bradley Marquez, Mahomes just freaking yeeted it from like 60 yards away, straight into his chest.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: And we're like, what?
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: No, where was this guy the whole time?
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Why did we start Davis Webb over this guy?
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: And you know, we didn't convert the two-point conversion, and y'all ended up winning.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: But to play that tightly uh against a really good Baylor team, we were just like, Yes, this is the future, this is the guy, and then you know it didn't work out that way, but we're not gonna talk about that.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: You know, I mean, he's he's pretty good though.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's he's a decent, he's a decent quarterback, I would say.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, but no, it didn't work out for tech, is what I'm trying to say.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, Tristan, what do you got?
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: You got a favorite moment?
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: I do, I do.
- 34:02SPEAKER_05: I I I have a weird one because it's not particularly exciting, but it it's it's last year's Baylor game because here we are.
- 34:11SPEAKER_05: We're sitting in this empty Jones stadium.
- 34:17SPEAKER_05: It's bizarre because you know, obviously, it's the COVID year, nobody can be there, uh, but but like 20 max.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: And so you can, you know, you're not you're you're in this empty stadium, and then obviously you have Jonathan Garabay kicking the game winning goal, which was awesome.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: But just the experience of being in the most empty college football stadium, it's just bizarre.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: It'll just an experience I'll never forget.
- 34:36SPEAKER_05: So it it has to be up there for me, and it was the butt bowl.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: So yeah, a 1.2423 butt bowl is uh it's a it's a solid one to pick.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I love that game because both teams were so terrible.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: We were so terrible.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: It really was the butt bowl.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: It really was, it was truly the bottom of the bottom of the butt bowl.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, you know, anytime you get a game winning field goal and we're terrible, we're just hoping for any win, you know, hallelujah.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: Thank God for John Garabay.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: But uh I had 2016 written down.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: Uh we had a 54-35 win uh in Jerry World, just your classic Mahomes game.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was uh he was unreal.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: Uh that was a decent Baylor team.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: I think they were I think they were six and four when we played y'all there at the end.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, we scored 40 41 points in the first half.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, we just went insane.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: So that's one of my favorites.
- 35:28SPEAKER_05: That was C and I's best year as college students, too.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: That was it.
- 35:33SPEAKER_05: Sounds fun, baby.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: That was the magical collapsing Baylor team.
- 35:37SPEAKER_04: That was the team that that was our Jim Grobe year, right?
- 35:40SPEAKER_04: Right after our Biles had gotten fired, and and we were six and oh, and every all of us were like, Yeah, it doesn't even matter.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: Like, you can get rid of Bryals, that asshole, like we don't care anymore.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Like, he's gone.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: It doesn't matter.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: Like, Baylor's a program, it's not a coach, and then we lost six straight games.
- 35:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was a tough scene.
- 35:59SPEAKER_05: That was a tough scene, yeah.
- 36:00SPEAKER_05: And you're and your betrothed, your bride is a tech alum, right?
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: My wife, my wife is a uh has two degrees from Texas Tech.
- 36:08SPEAKER_05: Okay, so the so these I bet these games are pretty fun in the Goodman household, then she does not care.
- 36:13SPEAKER_04: Oh no.
- 36:15SPEAKER_04: So I'll give you so my my wife is my wife is one of those people with sports as just like, yeah, tell me what happens, but like she'll watch football occasionally, but she is so I think it's I think she has like leech syndrome that a lot of people that graduated, like I'm I'm 33, so we're a little bit older.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: We grew up in the leach era, so I think a lot of the kids that or people now that went to school when Leech was there got a little, I don't know, disenfranchised with the the program a little bit, and it's hard to get them back.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: So she'll watch a tech football game now because I'll be like, Hey, you guys are up, and then the moment you go down, she's just like, Well, this is what I expected.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: I don't know why I watched that was the uh the national championship game for basketball.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: When you guys, when you guys were there, I was like, You're you're playing for a national title tonight.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: You have to watch.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: She said, I don't I don't have to do anything.
- 37:04SPEAKER_04: And I said, Well, you're it's it's a it's a national championship game.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: Like, come on.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: She goes, Okay, I'm gonna go to bed.
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: You can wake me up when there's five minutes left.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: And so that's what I did.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: I brought her in with five minutes left, and then of course, it didn't quite go your way because of a really stupid call, and uh, y'all should have won that game.
- 37:21SPEAKER_04: I fully believe that.
- 37:22SPEAKER_04: And she just was like, Hey, this is what I told you.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: This is why I don't think that.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I mean that's that is life as a Texas Tech fan.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, she, you know, she's definitely a part of that group.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, we've been part of two coaching changes, and each time it has been uh a massive part of this fan base that has just begged to bring Mike Leach back, whether he was at Washington State or whether he was in Mississippi State.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: And I I'll never understand it, I'll never get it, but they're always gonna be there.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: There's always gonna be the Mike Leach people that just want to bring him back, even if he's 90 years old, they're gonna want to bring him back.
- 38:01SPEAKER_05: Oh, at least those people are better than the the the R Bryals people because that's just yeah, we have the sports.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, just like you guys have like bring our briles home.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: We have plenty of those people, and they are the worst.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes, uh the absolute worst.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: But uh, yeah, that that's fun.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: Reliving the past.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Let's talk, let's talk the sport that really matters.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: Let's talk let's talk basketball because let's do it.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Baylor's Baylor is coming off a pretty a pretty significant thing, you know.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: Pretty pretty deep running, you know, pretty, pretty deep run, good run, uh, you know, solid performance for Baylor last season.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: Um, seventh in the nation right now.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: Uh still, you know, they lost a ton.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: Mitchell, butler, teague, vital.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: They lost a ton of their team, and yet they're still fantastic.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, Joe, what do you think about this team?
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: Dude, this team is is it's it's so fun.
- 38:52SPEAKER_04: So last year's team was special, like national championship aside.
- 38:55SPEAKER_04: Woo-hoo.
- 38:56SPEAKER_04: Um just the like those guys coming back after you know the COVID-cancelled year when they didn't get the chance to go to the tournament.
- 39:04SPEAKER_04: And there was a lot of thought that you know Butler might go to the NBA or Mitchell might try to to feel it out and go to the NBA.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: When they announced that they were gonna come back, there was like a level of expectations that none of us had ever had before.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and those those four especially are gonna be the most beloved ever.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: All that being said, this team that we have this year is so much fun.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't know how far they're gonna go because they're so young.
- 39:28SPEAKER_04: Like, two of our best players are true freshmen, and uh Zer Jeremy Sohan and um and Kendall Brown, who I'm calling Bunny Brown, and I'm trying to get that nickname to stick because he's got hops.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: Um, but but dude, like they are kind of like Lob City, like the everybody on this team is tall and can jump through the floor.
- 39:47SPEAKER_04: Um, it it almost reminds me of the early 2010s, late aughts, Scott Drew style of teams that were really long back when we ran the zone.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: Um, but these guys are a little bit more athletic than what we've had in the past.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: I'm pretty sure Kendall Brown's the highest ranked recruit that we ever had.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: Um, and that dude is just he's an absolute monster.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: Um, we bring back everybody's favorite um small forward, Matthew Mayer, who man, uh Baylor fans absolutely love that dude because he he looks like he has no business being on a floor and then he'll just dunk it through your brain.
- 40:19SPEAKER_04: Um, we bring back Adam Flagler.
- 40:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was a significant piece last year.
- 40:23SPEAKER_04: But man, that's my verdict so far this year is just watching these guys fly around the gym.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: Um, they're not quite the shooting team that they were last year, and they're definitely not going to be the defensive team that they were last year.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, but I think they they've got a sweet 16 or elite eight run in them for sure.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: Dang, man.
- 40:40SPEAKER_05: And it's gonna be kind of cool uh for y'all because this year, y'all are y'all are gonna be kind of like Kansas.
- 40:45SPEAKER_05: Like you're gonna you're gonna get like everybody's best.
- 40:47SPEAKER_05: There's gonna be a target on y'all's back this year because everyone's gonna want to beat the national champs.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: So it's gonna be really fun when you uh whenever y'all come to Lubbock and we go to Waco.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: So it's it's gonna be fun, man.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: Like, that's that's that's gonna be a cool squad to keep an eye on.
- 40:58SPEAKER_04: I cannot wait this year for you guys to show the country that uh Mark Adams was the actual secret weapon that Chris Beard had been using, and Chris Beard is garbage.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: See, this is this is why we bring you on the pods because you you you know, you know so much about the tech fandom, and you're one of us, even though you root for the bears first and foremost.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I'm super excited for basketball season.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: I think this is that that Baylor team last year reminded me a lot of the 2019 tech team, just in in terms of everything coming together, you know, in the right way.
- 41:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, having Davion uh just really take that next step and be the guy who he became because you know, if he were to try his luck in the NBA the the year before, I mean he would have been what a second round pick, something if that.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: Jared Butler, same deal, but they just they ended up coming back and it it molded great.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: And you always need a guy like Mark Vidal.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: I've said this for years.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Everybody needs a Mark Vidal on their team because he does everything that the other guys won't, and that's just hustle his ass off and you know get every rebound, even though he's only six foot three barely or six foot five, whatever he was.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I I I really like that Baylor team last year.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: I didn't want to, but I really did uh in terms of everything.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: Scott Drew, fantastic coach.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: But uh, I think the Big 12 in general is gonna be really fun.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think so many good teams.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: When you look at Texas, you look at Kansas, you look at y'all, even Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: I think all those teams are really solid.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, so how do you really see the Big 12 ending up?
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: I I am I still have beaten by Kansas all the time syndrome.
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: So I I yeah, no matter how good I think Baylor's going to be, I we talk about we talk about basketball, right?
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: Yes, we're talking about basketball.
- 42:44SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: I sorry, this isn't a longboard podcast.
- 42:46SPEAKER_05: No, yeah, yeah.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: But yeah, man, I I like I would pick Kansas to win it just because they're Kansas and you know it's just it's so tough to win there, and they travel well every year.
- 42:57SPEAKER_04: And Bill Solf, like you hate him or love him, he's a damn good coach.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, I think I would put Baylor's in in the second spot there.
- 43:04SPEAKER_04: I know Texas has gotten a lot of love.
- 43:06SPEAKER_04: I think Texas is going to be garbage.
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: Um overrated.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Like, I think they'll probably finish fifth or sixth.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: I think uh I fully expect tech to be up there in that third or fourth spot.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't care what you've lost.
- 43:18SPEAKER_04: You guys, you guys really built a culture there.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: And keeping Mark Adams around, I think, like I it pissed me off and made me love it at the exact same time because I I knew it was still going to be tough because you're gonna keep that culture of like it's a I almost look at tech basketball as like chaos.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: Like when you go up against them, you're just like you're like, Oh, come on, like they're gonna be all over me for 40 goddamn minutes.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: And and it's it's a blast to to watch that style of basketball.
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: And I think it's gonna stick around, so you guys aren't going anywhere.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, I think if I'm looking at like the bottom of the conference, TCU is gonna be at the bottom.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: I think they'll replace Iowa State.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: Uh, I've watched a few Iowa State games this year, and they're total 180.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the oh god, the effort they're not talented by any means.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: No, but but no, neither is TCU and uh and I think Iowa State probably finishes in that eight or nine spot.
- 44:10SPEAKER_04: Um, with like West Virginia being like mid decent, Kansas State probably being like a little bit less than decent, but I I think that top is going to be Kansas, Baylor, Tech, um, Texas kind of filling out up there.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I actually I could see Oklahoma actually making uh you know a scare of a lot of these good teams.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: They got they have a sneaky good team with uh Tanner Groves and uh the Goldwire from uh from Duke.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: So they they have a solid team.
- 44:39SPEAKER_04: I'm and a and a new head coach that's kind of brought some life there too.
- 44:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, poor Mosier, pretty solid coach, I'd say.
- 44:45SPEAKER_03: Pretty decent hire, pretty pretty decent higher over there.
- 44:48SPEAKER_03: So um, but yeah, I'm excited for basketball season.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be uh you know the normal slug fest that it is in the Big 12 every single day.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: It's the best basketball conference in the country.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: If if anybody says otherwise, it they're ridiculous because the Big Ten is not great this year, despite what everybody wants to think.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: The Big Ten just got destroyed by the Big East in the Gavin games, you know, Pac 12, whatever.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: Bill Walton's the best thing about Pac-12 basketball.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: Um, but no, I I'm excited for uh to see the Baylor tech matchups this year.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: Did you have something, uh favorite moment from basketball, the the butt rivalry?
- 45:23SPEAKER_04: Oh man, my favorite moment from the butt rivalry.
- 45:26SPEAKER_04: It would probably have to be the Kenny Cherry buzzer beater.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: Ah, I I knew you were gonna say that.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: I knew you were gonna say that.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: That was in Lubbock, too, man.
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: I feel yeah, it was.
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: He and he hit it from like the T.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know it was ridiculous.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: We were I I wasn't at that game.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: I think I was I was doing something, maybe I was interning at that point, but um, no, I just remember seeing the score, and I'm like, okay, Tex got it, and then all of a sudden, boom, buzzer beater in the USA.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: Something that we've actually held home court for the most part.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: We've been fantastic at home, and then uh they ended up pulling it out.
- 45:59SPEAKER_04: Man, it was a it's a real shame, but uh so my my my favorite thing about that game, too, is so I've got I've got like two guys that I consider my best friend.
- 46:07SPEAKER_04: I already told a story.
- 46:08SPEAKER_04: The one's the Ohio State guy, the other one's an Aggie, and he actually also married a Texas Tech Red Raider, and she's she's the polar opposite of my wife, and that she lives and breathes everything Red Raider sports.
- 46:20SPEAKER_04: Like, she she can tell you softball stats, baseball stats, basketball stats.
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: It doesn't matter to her.
- 46:24SPEAKER_04: Like, she is she's diehard.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, and he they had just started dating when that game happened, and she was at our house, and I was just like middle fingers in the air, like and my buddies like, he's what the hell are you doing?
- 46:36SPEAKER_05: Like, bro, help me out, dude.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: Um, I had one in mind, and that was uh take it back, 2016-17 season.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: Uh upsetting number four Baylor in Lubbock.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, that was a good that was a good Baylor team, too.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: They had Motley, they had uh Manu uh Lecamp, they had Big Joe.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: That was a really good Baylor team, and we ended up we played them tight in Waco to start the season.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: Uh almost pulled off the upset, but Baylor pulled away uh in the Ferrell Center.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: But then we kind of took it to him, and that was really when the program started turning around.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: That was 2017 when I think Beard, that was the first uh first year Beard made the tournament with the team, and I think we lost to Butler in the first round.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, that was a really fun team, Keenan Evans and all those guys, and we just we upset number four Baylor, we rushed the court, it was a fantastic experience.
- 47:30SPEAKER_03: That's my favorite.
- 47:31SPEAKER_05: The only time we got to rush anything, that's that's for sure.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, in basketball.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, we did it like four or five times.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: We did our freshman year when we're with Tubby Smith.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we did it a ton, but um yeah, man, excited, excited um for the Baylor tech game.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: Uh coming up, you know, big implications for Baylor.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: So hopefully we can ruin those a little bit.
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: Basketball season will be much more competitive in my eyes.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, we gotta do it.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: We end it off with the song of the week here on Talk and Tech Podcasts.
- 48:03SPEAKER_05: Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 48:05SPEAKER_06: What you got?
- 48:05SPEAKER_06: What you got?
- 48:06SPEAKER_06: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: I think Tristan wants to ask a question.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: I think I do.
- 48:10SPEAKER_05: You only get the Joe Goodman on your podcasts every once in a while.
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: He's got a long waiting list.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: So I I have a I have a question or two.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: So, all right, man.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: We're we're obviously in a very turbulent time.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: We just talked about how fun of a conference this is in basketball, but as you see, we're about to go through a transitioning period.
- 48:27SPEAKER_05: I just want to get your thoughts on what you see out of the situation, what you see with uh the the new Big 12, like your thoughts on it, your opinions.
- 48:34SPEAKER_04: All right, first off, my foundational piece here.
- 48:36SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna be super positive, as I always am, in that I absolutely love what Texas and Oklahoma have done for what I I love the hateful eight is the term I've seen a lot used.
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: How much we just like love each other so much more now?
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: It has been so much fun this season, like clowning people that are that don't care as much, like the jokes and like the ribbing, I think is what you called it earlier.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Like, I just I've absolutely loved it this season that everybody can kind of take a joke because what happens is like we'll make fun of each other and then we just all turn and point and laugh at Texas together.
- 49:11SPEAKER_04: Um, and it really I I wondered at the very beginning when Oklahoma and Texas announced that they were leaving, or you know, the first article came out.
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: Um, it was like, okay, so how fast is it gonna take all the rest of the eight teams to stab each other in the back and just go go land where they they will?
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: And when it didn't happen, I was just I was very surprised.
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: Um, so pleasantly surprised there, very excited for this season and kind of what the future holds.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: All that being said, like I don't trust anybody as long as I can, you know, like as far as I can reach them, basically.
- 49:44SPEAKER_04: And it won't surprise me if somebody does eventually jump ship, but um I I'm excited where this conference is going to go.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think a lot of uh what's wrong with college football these days, I don't want to sound like some crazy old man shaking my fist at the clouds, but you know, like the money and the ego in the sport have really like uh pushed things to a degree that everything is driven in a media sense rather than what the fans want to see or the the experiences that we've seen, the traditions that we have.
- 50:13SPEAKER_04: Um, all that said, uh it's been really fun kind of creating new things, seeing teams like UCF, Cincinnati, U of H, and BYU, how excited they've been.
- 50:24SPEAKER_04: Um, the stories that I've heard from BYU fans when they came to Waco this year to play us because we already had them on the schedule, just the excitement that they felt coming in and knowing that they were going to be a part of that regularly in the future.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: Um, we put their their athletic director and the president of their school came and we put like a Big 12 logo in the suite that they were in, which I thought was like super cool.
- 50:45SPEAKER_04: So it's been really fun watching those teams be excited about this.
- 50:49SPEAKER_04: Um, and I also think that Texas is is going to really struggle for at least a few years in the SEC and it's gonna be beautiful.
- 50:56SPEAKER_04: And I can't wait for them to lose to Vanderbilt.
- 50:58SPEAKER_05: Well, what I mean, what changes for them?
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: You know, it's like they're they already get everything they ever could have won.
- 51:04SPEAKER_04: And it's like$10 million a year.
- 51:06SPEAKER_04: Like that's they're gonna get like$10 to$15 million a year in a TV deal.
- 51:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like extra than they do now.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: And I think obviously they are they think they're too good for this conference and they think they're too good for this competition, they think they're too good for this home schedule, but they they're the guy, they're gonna finish like ninth today this year.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: You know, it's like what what are the what do they think they're gonna go there and do that's gonna be different, that's gonna be you know, transform you know what people think of UT football these days.
- 51:28SPEAKER_05: It's it's hilarious.
- 51:29SPEAKER_05: I love it, and I'm I'm I'm on full agreement with you, man.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: I'm really excited about it.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: I think this core group of teams, I know you you perhaps uh showed a little uh distrust with everybody sitting together, but I I don't think these teams are the same as UT and OU.
- 51:43SPEAKER_05: And I and obviously we're all sticking together for a reason because nobody else really wanted us.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: So I think we're gonna make this island of misfit toys work for a while, and I think it's gonna be way better than it's ever gonna get credit for.
- 51:53SPEAKER_05: Because I mean, right now, if you look at the the playoff community right now, and even if you subtract OU, we make up 20 of this uh of the top 25 right now of the new big 12.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: So this is gonna be a lot of fun, and I have I'm looking forward to all the new the new rivalries that'll come out of it in the games, it's gonna be a ton of fun.
- 52:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think especially when we find out what the fate of the expanded playoff is.
- 52:14SPEAKER_04: Like if it goes to 12 teams, then we're gonna be just like nobody's gonna care, nobody's gonna try to leave at that point.
- 52:19SPEAKER_04: And it's like, okay, well, we got a guaranteed spot into the playoff.
- 52:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we'll stick together, become the best basketball conference that's ever existed.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 52:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I have the same thoughts kind of as Tristan.
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: It's it the the public, the outsiders' perception of the new Big 12 is never gonna be as good as the actual product that we are putting out onto the court, the field, whatever.
- 52:40SPEAKER_03: We're always gonna have solid teams playing football.
- 52:43SPEAKER_03: We're gonna beat the best basketball conference, we're gonna remain that because you know it's already there.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: And that's not really thanks to OU or UT these past few years.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: You know, it's thanks to Baylor, the Kansas, the Tex, all that good stuff.
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: So uh the perception of it, not gonna be where we want it, but that's been the case for a long time now.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I'm excited about it just as much as as you two are.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think it's I think it's gonna be a great thing for us.
- 53:10SPEAKER_05: Any closing thoughts, though, before we move into the song of the week?
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Any any questions for us?
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: Any any statements for the treasure listeners?
- 53:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 53:19SPEAKER_04: So this is this is something I often ask teams that are either coming off like a really bad year or teams that are getting a new coach.
- 53:26SPEAKER_04: What does success look like for Texas Tech football in 2022?
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, in in 2022?
- 53:32SPEAKER_05: Do you want to take this one first, Stephen?
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: Or do you want me to go?
- 53:35SPEAKER_03: I I'll yeah, I'll go first.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: Um better recruiting is what I want to see.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: That's the main thing.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: You know, the the product that's on the field, I understand that it's a it's a process every time it's a coaching change.
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: I'm curious to see who our OC and DC are gonna be, uh, for me to really judge how this team's gonna be.
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: And it's also gonna, you know, depend on the roster makeup, who's coming back, uh, you know, all that sort of good stuff.
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: So uh I guess just right now, if we're bowl eligible next year, I'm I'm happy.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, but I really just want to see the program change because it's in it's been in such a lull ever since Matt Wells was hired and even the closing years of Kingsbury.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: So I'm just ready to get excited about football.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: I'm ready to be competitive in a lot of games.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: I don't want to see these 70 to 35 games against a bad Texas team.
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: I don't want to see that anymore.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I that's what that's all I want.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: I'm not expecting, you know, friggin' nine wins immediately and a great bowl game or whatever, but uh, you know, I I just want to see uh progression, I guess.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I want Steven.
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: It's it's if we get bowl eligible, it'll be a successful season.
- 54:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'd be pumped about it.
- 54:43SPEAKER_05: And and like Steven said, I want more energy injected back to the program.
- 54:46SPEAKER_05: I just want to believe again.
- 54:47SPEAKER_05: I just want I want home games to be fun again.
- 54:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, if we could put together some fun home games, I'll be very pleased because that's been my biggest complaint with the football with the football team this decade is we can't win at home, and that's just unacceptable.
- 54:59SPEAKER_05: You have to win at home to get fans involved.
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: So I I want something, I want some exciting home games, better recruiting, as Steven said, and a bull.
- 55:07SPEAKER_05: If we get to a bowl game, I will count it as a successful inaugural season.
- 55:11SPEAKER_04: So I'll tell you what my personal measure of success for tech in 2022 is going to be is a 63-yard field goal.
- 55:21SPEAKER_05: Cyclone Larry is driving his fist through a wall right now.
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: So I've never seen somebody more upset than Cyclone Larry after that.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: It was it was fantastic.
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's great, and then the Vikings have to save his uh happy singers weekend the five and five Vikings.
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: But uh, enough about Cyclone Larry.
- 55:47SPEAKER_03: Tristan, am I allowed to move on to Song of the Week?
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: Yes, you're finally your your passport has been stamped.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: Thank you, thank you, Joe.
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: Your song of the week, you are the guest, you are going first.
- 55:59SPEAKER_03: What is your song of the week?
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: So, my song of the week is a special song because there was a uh a time when I was a senior in high school that uh we me and some friends were driving back to Houston from Cleveland, Texas, which is like it's like longer than an hour drive.
- 56:13SPEAKER_04: It's not like a crazy long drive.
- 56:15SPEAKER_04: Um, but we had a CD that had this song on it, and we made a pact, the three of us, that we would put this one song on repeat, and um whoever had to have the song stopped was like the loser.
- 56:28SPEAKER_04: I don't know what we got, but whatever.
- 56:30SPEAKER_04: Um, but that song, and it you know, it's gonna be my song of the week.
- 56:33SPEAKER_04: It's very near and dear to my heart is Blue by Eiffel 65.
- 56:50SPEAKER_03: Fantastic, fantastic song of the week.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: I'm blue, Baba Diva Diva Day.
- 56:58SPEAKER_05: Holy hell.
- 56:59SPEAKER_05: So, did anyone stop y'all?
- 57:01SPEAKER_05: Did anyone stop it on the way?
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: I we we all kind of like after I think it was about 30 minutes.
- 57:07SPEAKER_05: We kind of all just like we kind of just like gave each other the look of like, okay, I can't do this anymore.
- 57:17SPEAKER_05: I love that.
- 57:18SPEAKER_05: That is a great story, man.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I love that that's now going on the talk and tech song of the week playlist.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 57:24SPEAKER_03: I love that we're in that blue by Eiffel 65 on there.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: Tristan, we did a song of the week already, but we're gonna do another one because our good buddy Joe Goodman is here.
- 57:33SPEAKER_03: We can't leave him hanging here.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: Tristan, your second song of the week.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: All right, so we're we're back to non-themed, just picking songs we like.
- 57:42SPEAKER_05: I'm doing a Texas outfit with green with great peacock.
- 57:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, they're uh rock and roll bluesy country.
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: You know, you know how these Texas bands work.
- 57:50SPEAKER_05: Who knows what genre they fall in?
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: It is heartbreak coming down, it's just an absolute bluesie jam.
- 57:56SPEAKER_05: The hooks are addicting, and it's easy to sing along to.
- 57:59SPEAKER_05: Y'all are gonna like it.
- 58:00SPEAKER_05: I really do.
- 58:01SPEAKER_05: I enjoyed it big time.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: I can feel a heartbreak coming down.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: I can feel a heartbreak coming down.
- 58:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, I'm absolutely gonna listen to that tonight.
- 58:14SPEAKER_04: Hell yeah.
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: You gotta do it, Joe.
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: You big country music fan, dude.
- 58:18SPEAKER_04: I dabble in absolutely everything.
- 58:20SPEAKER_04: I love me some Texas country.
- 58:21SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm not I'm not as big into like like mainstream pop country, but like red dirt country.
- 58:26SPEAKER_04: Like, oh yeah, I'll get into that.
- 58:27SPEAKER_04: That's especially like my summertime music.
- 58:29SPEAKER_05: Nice, hell yeah.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: That's that you're you're fitting in right in riding well here, that's for sure.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that well, that's all Tristan listens to, so uh, you know, that's about it.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: But uh I'll bring another one with you with that staying with that Texas theme because I do live in Louisiana currently, but I am going to Texas tomorrow for Thanksgiving to see the family, and I'm very excited.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: I miss the state dearly.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, we got good Cajun food, but that's about it over here uh in Baton Rouge.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: But I'm excited to get back to Texas.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: My song of the week is Texas Home by Prophets and Outlaws, because that is our home.
- 59:04SPEAKER_03: That's all of our homes right here.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech and Baylor coming together.
- 59:08SPEAKER_03: We're all part of Texas, we're all here to crap on the Longhorns.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, so that's my song of the week, Texas Home, Prophets and Outlaws.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: And I buried my Pep Ball in West Texas, Canada.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: I love my Texas home.
- 59:24SPEAKER_05: Such a good band and good song, too.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: Great pick, man.
- 59:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: I've already done that before.
- 59:31SPEAKER_03: I've done Prophets and Outlaws, but I'm gonna do it again because uh it's a phenomenal band, phenomenal, acceptable.
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 59:38SPEAKER_03: So, Joe, do it.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Plug plug everything that you're on, your Twitter handle, your podcast.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: Let us know where where we can find it, where we can find you.
- 59:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you can find me on Twitter at the easiest to remember Twitter handle at all.
- 59:51SPEAKER_04: It's super short, it's uh at the underscore Joe underscore goodman.
- 59:56SPEAKER_04: Um, I got that in 2011 and just refused to change it.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_04: So you can come there for my general Baylor musings.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_04: Um, a lot of making fun of Texas that seems to be a big brand that I have is just clowning Texas regularly, which I will continue to do even when they're in the SEC.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_04: Um, very, very poorly photoshopped items that just are the thoughts that pop into my head and I get them done as quick as possible.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_04: Um, so that's where you can find me on kind of social media, come interact.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm I try to be fun.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_04: And then uh I do host a Baylor podcast called the Bear Den Podcast, and you can find us anywhere.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_04: Um, find us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, pretty much anywhere you can find your favorite podcasts.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: Uh so if if you're if you're ever in the mood to just hear what's going on in the uh the Baylor sphere, come listen to us.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_05: How do you not have a Twitter for the pod?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_04: We do.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_04: It's at it's at the Bear Din pod, but I don't I don't even like I don't I I don't even know if we tweet anything from there regularly.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, see, that's where you're mistaken.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: I've completely given up my personal Twitter account and I'm one of the things.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I've noticed I don't that's what like I'm when I just when I tweet at talking tech pod, it's because I'm tweeting at you.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_03: It's tweeting at me, yeah.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: You know that despite what the people think, Tristan does not run the Twitter account.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_03: I run the Twitter account.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_03: Tristan likes his personal stuff.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, yeah, that's why the memes are so bad.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: You two far exceed me in the meme game.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, seriously, follow Joe on everything.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm sure some Baylor fans are tuning into this one.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_03: So uh Joe, man, we appreciate you coming on.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_03: This has been fantastic.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, we just we appreciate it so much.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: And I expect you guys to come over to ours whenever we uh when we hit basketball season.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_01: We're there.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: Uh wow.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_02: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: This is incredible.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_03: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
