3:38
to talk a little bit this morning about virtual schooling in West Virginia. Cheryl
3:44
Staley's with us. She is the administrator for the West Virginia Virtual Academy.
3:46
She is the first West Virginia to be nominated and I found out in the
3:50
green room to win the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools Change Maker Awards.
3:57
Cheryl, Congratulations, good morning, Welcome back to the show. Good morning,
4:00
Dave. Thank you so very much. So give us a timeline here.
4:03
You were nominated for this award and you made the trip to DC.
4:06
First of all, what is the award? Talk about that that'd be a
4:10
good place to start. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is a national
4:14
organization where they are representing charter schools around the country. Charter schools are a
4:21
huge, growing movement and it's a new and different way to educate children.
4:30
They are very big on Capitol Hill and they have this thing called the change
4:33
Maker Award, and it's for legislatures, school administrators. There was a parent
4:41
there and we are people who have a voice and have something to say about
4:46
charter schools. So you were nominated for this award and you made the trip
4:49
to d C. You won. Yes, congratulations, first West Virginian,
4:54
I guess to win this ward. How exactly is the award chosen? Who
4:59
chooses this award. Well, I'm not sure all the details behind the scenes,
5:01
but from what I understood, you know, as you want, I
5:05
got the trophy. What I understand is that the West Virginia Public Charter School
5:11
Board endorsed my nomination, sent that to DC. The National Alliance selected me
5:17
as one of the six winners based upon my experience as a parent, as
5:21
a teacher and administrator with charter schools. I have been involved with the startup
5:27
with two different charter schools. I've been doing this for quite a while.
5:30
I don't want to get into your background. How did you give us your
5:32
background overall, not just in the charter school world, but even before that.
5:36
Just give us a background in shall state. I'm an educator, came
5:41
out of the knock any school systems left like so many people did, but
5:46
went into education, loved it. Taught high school Inner City Philadelphia for years
5:51
and just found my passion. And then my son got sick, and my
5:56
son needed a different school environment. He couldn't go into a building, he
6:01
needed time to heal. And I discovered a virtual public charter school, and
6:05
I watched my son blossom. He blossomed socially, he bloshed them emotionally and
6:14
academically, and I want I want to do this. This is what I
6:17
want to do. So I left my great job that I loved, went
6:21
to a virtual charter school and I have not looked back. I want to
6:27
This is kind of off subject, but I want to talk about the compare
6:30
and contrast teaching in inner city Philadelphia schools with somebody who's from from Kanawha County
6:35
and yourself went through Kanawha County schools. Talk about the differences there. They're
6:40
a lot, just a few, just a few. Honestly, I loved
6:44
it. One of the things that I loved about my students in Philadelphia is
6:48
that their loyalty to people who trust them, people who care about them,
6:56
people who respect them. They are fiercely loyal and that drives my is one
7:04
of the driving factors for me in terms of building relationships with kids. I
7:09
love kids. I believe in kids. I'm gonna push them, but that's
7:14
okay, and kids have my back because I have theirs. And I think
7:18
when you have that relationship with a student, you can do amazing things with
7:23
them. And I learned that in Philadelphia, which was the best part of
7:28
being in an inner City School, but Dave Allen showing five to eighty live.
7:31
Presented in part by General Hardware of Windfield and Milton General Number of Winfield.
7:34
For all projects, big and small shop locally visit General Hardware WV dot
7:39
com. Let's get back to this award for a moment. It's the official
7:44
name, I think was the change Maker Award. Talk about the definition of
7:49
a change maker? What did they look I know you said you didn't know
7:51
everything that went into choosing you, but particularly, but what are they what's
7:57
the critt here? What are they looking for? I think they're looking for
8:00
people who have that inner passion and drive to make a difference, People who
8:05
are not afraid to raise their voice and to advocate for change, because it's
8:09
not easy. When I came back home to West Virginia and I was a
8:13
school choice advocate, you know, I got a lot of looks, but
8:20
I so passionately believe that this is what we need to do for our students.
8:24
We must evolve education. Why do you feel so strongly about this,
8:28
Cheryl? The traditional model. When I grew up in Knall County Schools,
8:33
which is a wonderful school system to grow up in desks classrooms doesn't work anymore,
8:39
not for every child. It doesn't work not for every child. It
8:43
works for some people. I personally would do really well in a classroom environment.
8:48
That's just who I am and what I am. But it doesn't work
8:50
that way for every student, and we need to have different models available for
8:56
kids who have different needs. We have kids at West Virginia Virtual Academy who
9:01
need acceleration. They're bored in a classroom, so we can push them.
9:07
We have kids at our school who have huge learning losses. We need to
9:11
mitigate those. We have the flexibility to do that that you don't necessarily have
9:18
in a traditional school. So when I was teaching and I had my forty
9:22
kids in a classroom one, we have to move around. Try moving around
9:26
forty teenagers. That's not easy. But you teach to the middle. I
9:30
don't care how good you are, you're always teaching to the middle. I
9:33
don't have to do that with our school. Our teachers can teach to the
9:37
child, and that I think is going to help us evolve our education system.
9:43
And I think sometimes and I've had various folks from this world, from
9:46
Doug Sibiletti on down on this show from time to time, and they've had
9:50
to educate me, no pun intended. They've had to educate me a lot
9:52
on this too, because I think sometimes there is sharel a idea in people's
9:58
head that people that are proposed that's whether it's folks that do what you do,
10:01
whether it's people in the legislature, whatever. If you're a proponent of
10:05
school choice, that that means you're anti public school. And what I've learned
10:11
in talking to all you folks is that's not the case at all. No,
10:13
sir, we are not anti public school because this is a public school,
10:18
I mean. And that's something Doug has had to work with me on
10:20
because I've said as opposed to public school, and he always jumps in it,
10:22
says, Dave, we are a public school. But there's not this
10:26
adversarial relationship, at least on your guys. In correct, we are a
10:31
public school. We are serving children of West Virginia, just like fifty five
10:35
counties in this state. We are doing the same thing. We're serving kids.
10:41
And let's talk about the before we let you go, the biggest misconception
10:45
about your school, because I'm sure there are plenty, and when you're out
10:48
at a you know, at a function, or somebody stops you at a
10:50
grocery store or whatever. They probably say, well, I heard it was
10:54
this. What's the biggest misconception you run into. We are not pandemic teaching.
10:58
We are live teachers. We provide live instruction for kids. We deal
11:03
with the whole child. So not only do they have academic excellence expected of
11:09
them, we have social programs. We have clubs, we have student council,
11:15
we have National Honor Society. We are just like any other school.
11:20
We just don't have a building. Well, and the numbers are growing in
11:26
Less Virginia. I mean and not just in West Virginia but across the country,
11:28
but specifically because I'm concerned with West Virginia. They are growing more and
11:33
more parents Cheryl are making this choice. We grew by two hundred and fifty
11:37
five percent this year. Now, why do you think, I mean,
11:39
I know, the pandemic taught us a lot of good things and bad things
11:43
about our education system. Why do you think that there is this growth?
11:46
Because, truth be told, even before the pandemic, things were starting to
11:52
look in that direction of a different model for some students and their school.
11:56
This predates the pandemic. Yes, say, I've been involved with this for
12:01
a number of years. It's just new to West Virginia. I really believe
12:05
that. You know, we've got kids who spend two three hours a day
12:09
on a school bus. You don't have to do that in our world.
12:13
Just get up. Some days you don't even have to get up. We
12:15
have kids who do school sometimes in bed. Not my favorite thing, but
12:20
I do it. So we don't have that. We don't have the bullying,
12:24
we don't have the violence. We accept and honor all of our kids,
12:31
and they're not afraid. It makes me sad to listen to kids and
12:35
they tell me how they've been bullied and harassed and jumped in bathrooms, and
12:41
they feel safe with us, and they feel like teachers care, and not
12:45
that teachers care all over the state, but we can express that differently,
12:50
and I think it resonates with our families. We also welcome the adults into
12:56
our world. So our parents are and coaches are actively involved with our kids
13:03
with their education, with me, with the teachers, and that's something of
13:07
an education for families who often don't have positive experiences with school systems. We
13:13
expect them, we need them because they're with their children. Well, Cheryl,
13:18
congratulations on your award. I mean I thought you'd at least come in
13:24
with like a sash or something. No office sash, okay, but was
13:28
there a trophy involvement? And I lugged that thing around like the Stanley Cup.
13:33
You're just taking away everywhere you go. We we had to go to
13:37
Capitol Hill after the awards ceremony, so I lugged that thing around. It
13:41
waged a ton. Felt like I was Karen's child the entire day. But
13:46
it was a phenomenal opportunity. I got to go to Capitol Hill and and
13:52
speak I had. I got to meet with our elected representatives and talk to
13:58
them about my passion and interests in charter schools and how they can help us
14:03
do a better job serving schools. So that was just amazing. Well,
14:07
Cheryl, congratulations, you're a trailblazer. You know you got this award.
14:09
Now, now the onus is on some other people that do things like what
14:13
you do to bring another award like that home to West Virginia. Cheryl Staley

17:37
Do you know any public schools with this model? Says a Texter texta
17:42
says Dave got a great education in public schools, and now we have people
17:45
wanting to attack our teachers and our schools. I think here, here is
17:51
where I kind of am on this. And even in talking to Cheryl,
17:55
she said the same thing about her own personal experience when it came to to
18:00
when it came to being a teacher, I'm sorry and king to being a
18:03
student. Every student is different and every student learns differently. I was not
18:08
one that I'll be honest with you probably would have done well and in that
18:12
sort of a virtual learning environment because I'm a social kind of guy. I
18:18
like to be out, I like to talk to people, and my GPA
18:22
in high school will will prove that that I spent more time socializing and telling
18:26
jokes and whatever that I probably spent in probably spent on academics. So it
18:30
probably would not have been for me, but if it is, I think
18:37
for some students, and the results are there now. Again, we're very
18:41
early in the process. West Virginia's kind of late to the game. This
18:42
has been going on pre pandemic across the country and we're just kind of catching
18:48
up here. So I think the jury is still out on it. But
18:51
there are some good things happening, and I am one that I think,
18:53
I honestly think that parents should should have a choice Texas. I think history
18:57
will revealed that virtual school will make people dumber, not smarter. People learn
19:03
so much more when they're physically with other humans. This has been true throughout
19:06
the entire history of humanity. We are just hours away from the Stay Boys
19:11
Baseball tournament getting underway Gomart Ballpark. Fred person Or, the voice of high
19:15
school sports in West Virginia, joined us right now. Sir Frederick, good
19:18
morning, Good morning, David. You better take care of some business,
19:21
sir, Yes, yes, baseball time. No no no no no,
19:25
no no no no, I'm sorry. The other thing, Fred, the
19:27
other thing that you reminded me about. Yeah, you know me, I'm
19:30
just in like you're in baseball mode. I get it, I get it.
19:33
But there's something else going on in your life that has nothing to do
19:37
with sports. Fred, I wouldn't go that far. I mean, you
19:41
know, it's funny. My wife, my beautiful wife, Jan is celebrating
19:45
a birthday today. She was telling me last night. You know, it's
19:49
either my birthday or our anniversary or your birthday. And you're always working the
19:56
way it is it's radio, you know you it happens. But so I
20:02
left home about five thirty this morning. I'll get home about at eleven to
20:07
night. Happy birthday, birthday, Jan and her her romantic birthday dinner will
20:12
be a corn dog and nachos from Go Martin Ballpark? Is that right now?
20:15
I will call her later. You have to decide. I Ain'm doing
20:18
both. Mean, yeah, you know now, why would you would you
20:22
want to? Sweet lady, she's a very sweet life for Yeah. I
20:25
mean we've been married. It's a special type Fred, that can be married
20:29
to one of us. And I've been married for thirty two years in September.
20:33
It takes a special type to live, to live this lifestyle, and
20:37
youve been doing it longer than I. I will have been married in November
20:38
fifty five years. Congratulations, man, that's but right. And I tell
20:44
her though, the reason that it has worked so long as I've really only
20:47
seen her about twenty one years. You know it's not fifty five. Okay,
20:49
well it's probably her. All right. Let's get to the tournament.
20:53
First game this afternoon, Triple A GW take it on Martinsburg number four c
21:00
G DUB and the number one Bulldogs of Martinsburg. Yeah. Like a lot
21:03
of sports day, they rotate what classes start now when you play, And
21:07
I tell you, I think we're starting off with two of the very very
21:10
best games we're gonna have. I mean, you look at the number one
21:12
seed in Triple A and Martinsburg. They're thirty three and three. The thing
21:15
that stands out to me about them, they're averaging almost eleven runs a game.
21:19
They're only giving up a little over two runs a game. So yeah,
21:22
pitching, they have, hitting, they are solid. They're looking for
21:26
the first state title in fifteen years. And they go against the team that
21:32
the record is not outstanding. If you look at thirty three and three from
21:34
Martinsburg and GW you're not quite there, the boy. They have set their
21:40
pitching up to where it could be a classic. That starts at four thirty
21:44
today and that's followed by two and three Cable Midland of Morgantown. I'm hearing
21:48
some great things spread about this Morgantown team. Morgantown is is solid, no
21:53
question it's going to be you know. Of course, Cabole Midland won it
21:57
all last year and they were young year. They returned quite a bit of
22:02
those players from last year's team that won it all. So the two to
22:04
three game about gets into about seven tonight at Gomart Park should be a good
22:08
one as well. Tomorrow we get started at ten with a Class double,
22:11
a match up with the Generals of Winfield taking on Independence Generals or the number
22:15
one seed Patriots are number four. That's right, Winfield won at all.
22:19
Yeah, and last year they're back to repeats. Winfield and the softball team
22:23
just oneball team, just one. Good time to be in Winfield to be
22:26
a general right now, it's not bad if you're the head coach of by
22:30
the one of those Yeah, really yeah, I think Winfield certainly the number
22:33
one seed for a reason. They returned quite a few from last year's state
22:37
title team. Number four Independence. You want to be playing your best baseball
22:41
at this time of the year, Scott Cuthbert, veteran coach at Independence.
22:45
That's exactly what his kids are doing. So that'll be a good one tomorrow
22:48
morning. That starts to play at ten am. We're going to follow that
22:52
up with number three inb A Herbert Hoover and number two Frankfurt. Yeah,
22:59
I'm looking forward that one. I have. Frankfort Is it's a name that
23:03
if you're a baseball fan in high school, you know, Frankfort All the
23:06
Falcons, they're always there. Herbert Hoover, they seemingly just win. That's
23:10
that's what the Huskies do. They win, and it'll be that'll be a
23:14
good one at noon tomorrow and then tomorrow afternoon about five o'clock. We started
23:19
at four thirty today, we'll start at or five five o'clock tomorrow and Williamstown
23:26
against Buffalo, Williamstown's number one seed. Think about this. Williamstown is a
23:30
single a team that is good in everything. High school baseball is the only
23:36
sport that Williamstown does not have a state triller, then do you think that
23:41
that's the only sport. They have the state titles in every other sport.
23:44
It's not complication. Time to catch up. And then of course Charleston Catholic
23:48
in East Hardy, Charleston Catholic to me has maybe one of the best catchers
23:52
that we'll see this entire weekend. And Zaden Ransom only a sophomore, and
23:56
the kid is legit. I mean, he is an outstanding back basketball player
24:00
and I think he's even better baseball player. I want to talk about this
24:04
team in Buffalo, though, I mean, Buffalo's in this thing despite their
24:10
coaching staff quitting. Hell. I mean, who's the head coach of Buffalo?
24:14
We got three names, Yeah, you've got what this is, the
24:17
athletic director and the principal. I mean the hierarchy here basically. And I
24:22
don't know what happened there. It's not it's no reason to try to get
24:26
into that here because they're in the state tournament. But Buffalo's coaching staff quent
24:30
and the players are still there. And somebody stepped up at the school,
24:33
as I said, principal ad and said we got to get this thing done
24:34
and that's exactly what they're doing. Would that be a story? I mean,
24:38
yeah, how important is that head coach? Yeah, but no,
24:44
that's a great story. And it's one that you said it Bright. I
24:48
don't even know that you delve into it once begin and you mentioned it.
24:49
Hey, they're here. It's all about the kids. Yes, it's all
24:53
about the kids. And most of these kids, I mean, you know,
24:56
graduations have already happened. So these kids are are are playing now just
25:00
I mean they're they're they're playing for pride at this point. They and they
25:03
want to win championships even though they're technically no longer students. With the catcher
25:08
the catcher for Washington last week in the softball team, and she said she
25:14
graduated on May the eighteenth, and a week or a week plus later,
25:18
they're still playing softball together. And she delayed a trip to the beach andever
25:22
that's what you do though you know you graduated as a senior. At its
25:26
Wilds Beach trip or something. These athletes, they hang around and they do
25:30
what they're supposed to do. They we've seen I don't I can't think of
25:33
a team we'll see this year, but every year similarly, we've had a
25:37
graduation on the mound. Yeah, at Goodmart Park. You know, here's
25:41
your diploma. Now go play ball, No, no work under slider.
25:45
Yeah all right. Saturday Championship Saturday, Triple A game at ten, followed
25:48
by the Double A then the Single A. One of the things Fred,
25:51
that I love about the baseball tournament, with all due respect to all the
25:53
other sports which you cover, is it's it's just really simple, you know.
25:57
I mean, you don't have all of this, you know, elimination
26:00
stuff. Once you get to the state tournament, it's got it's got less,
26:03
you know, teams at that level. Basically you just go out and
26:06
play for three days, uh, in a great facility, and uh it's
26:10
it's it's just kind of simple. I like that I do to you lose,
26:11
you go home. And the one thing I really like about the Championship
26:14
Saturday, you buy a ticket for the Saturday morning game the Triple A title.
26:18
You can stay and watch the other two on that same tickets. Boom
26:21
boom boom, three games for one ticket. And uh, I know I
26:25
shouldn't say this. Announcers cursed, but the weather is supposed to be great.
26:29
The weather's going to be fantastic. It's one of those what the what
26:32
Tony Cavalier would call a top ten day, ten day, I think top
26:36
three day. Yeah, I mean you got three great And it's not always
26:37
been the case. No, We've ended up late late Sunday mornings, yeah,
26:42
all things, and Sunday afternoons we've played. So I think we got
26:47
a shot. But day after day after we'll get it in. And one
26:49
other thing I do want to mention, Unlike in some years past, there's
26:52
a lot of Canal valley flavor here. Charleston Catholic, GW, Buffalo Winfield.
26:56
Let's go ahead and throw in Cabull Midlands for a little advance valley flavor.
27:00
I mean we got there's a lot of local interest here too. How
27:03
about Luke Salmon's stepping down. Luke Salmons, the head coach at Cabol Midlin,
27:07
announced that he's going to Corbin, Kentucky. And that you the coach
27:10
that was there for five years prior to or four years prior to Luke taking
27:15
over. He stepped out, he retired, stepped down. He was forty
27:18
six and five. That's a winning program there. But Luke's a winner.
27:23
He was, he's been at caboin Middlon for thirteen years. They made the
27:26
playoffs all thirteen years, never won a state championship. Was there twice,
27:30
ran into some team called Martinsburg both times. And you know how that goes.
27:34
Yeah, and before you know it, we're gonna be start. We'll
27:37
start talking about high school football. By the way, it's ninety nine days
27:41
until West Virginia plays Penn State. Not but you've got it marked down.
27:45
That's the thing about sports. We're always looking ahead. We have to do
27:48
something else, We're always looking ahead. And this is this is the year
27:52
for the Cowboys Fred in the NFL. I'm just gonna go and throw that
27:53
this is the year that what that they win the Super Bowl? I just
28:00
I think it's always good on the laugh, Yeah it is, it is
28:03
all right. Let me tell you something worse than that. I'm a guardian.
28:07
I know what do they call him? Now? I'm a Redskins fan.
28:10
Forget it, I'm a Washington's Cafe Redskins fan have been forever. Okay,
28:15
why don't you went there? What are you? Washington? They're the
28:18
commanders. Well, though there's a move on to maybe get that name back
28:22
there, they should what are we talking about Come on, yeah, uh,
28:26
let me get this in here. I was telling people early they need
28:29
to download the all new Metro News TV app because now, in addition Fred
28:32
the Sports Line, three Guys Talk Line, uh, and a bunch of
28:36
other archive programs, a lot of documentaries that are on there, they could
28:38
watch the state tournament, you know how specials to be. And we're gonna
28:41
We're gonna have Chris Lawrence is going to be doing our sidelines for us.
28:45
Chris does a fantastic job, and he's I'm going to give him a story
28:48
to interview a young man, the second baseman for Martinsburg. His mother has
28:53
been to every game, but now she has leukemia. Oh she's in Johns
28:56
Hopkins and she says she's going to be watching the game on the Metro.
29:00
That's awesome. I mean, it's not awesome, but it's a great And
29:03
and Eric, I forget he's lesting any He said, I'm gonna find me
29:07
a camera just so mom can know that I'm saying hi. So I'm going
29:11
to make sure we interview that yet. Absolutely, you had a text here.
29:14

35:52
Governor Rimers. Senator Mansion was at the University of Charleston yesterday for opening of
35:59
a thing in this facility. There quite impressive facility, by the way,
36:01
Kat Skelton's got a great story about it on the website. His quote yesterday,
36:06
this is a direct quote from Senator Mansion, Steve Williams talking about the
36:09
Huntington mayor and the Democratic nominee. Steve Williams has been a friend of mine
36:14
for forty years and we've worked together. I know how good he is,
36:17
how competent he is, and how hard he will work in quotes. The
36:22
Senator also went on to say he doesn't know how all the rumors about him
36:27
running for governor begin. Well, Senator, they begin and really caught fire
36:36
because there are a great number of Republicans who are not in favor of Patrick
36:39
Morrissey being the next governor period now that could change. Mean, you know,
36:44
there's time to rally the troops. It was an ugly, ugly primary,
36:49
and it's happened in state politics, It's happened on national politics as well.
36:52
I mean, hell, Nicki Haley is now saying she's going to vote
36:55
for Trump, if that tells you anything. I am told that this whole
37:02
thing of Mansion possibly running for governor was discussed extensively at a GOP gathering in
37:08
flat Woods a couple of weeks ago, and as I mentioned, it was
37:13
a lot of the talk last week at an event at the Greenbrier. And
37:16
I've said since day one that Joe Manchin could in all of this with a
37:22
simple statement by saying, I Am not running for governor. Now I know
37:27
the gazette the story, you know, the headline of the Gazette this morning
37:30
was Mansion Nix's rumors about governor run. And there are others that have said
37:34
that. To my knowledge, he has still not issued a statement saying those
37:38
exact words. And you know, he says he knowledged he told me last
37:45
week I talked to him that he acknowledged it, that they were out there.
37:50
I was not at the event in the University of Charleston yesterday. But
37:53
based on what I have read, Senator, just say the words, just
38:00
come out point blank, as my grandpa would say, flat footed, and
38:02
just say the words. I'm sure it would make both Patrick Morrissey and Steve
38:07
Williams feel a whole lot better about things. Ben Fields, by the way,

44:42
Over the past twelve years, I've seen many timeshare exit companies come and go,

copycats that over promise yet never deliver, causing damage to folks that have
44:51
already been hurt by the timeshare companies. At Wesley, we're passionate about standing

Text says Dave, did you see a presser by Shelley Moore? Capita has
45:46
gone viral, Capital said. One of our staffers discovered that in December,
45:51
the EPA awarded a fifty million dollars grant to the IO to a group called
45:54
Climate Justice Alliance, which engages in Prohamas, anti Israel, and anti Semitic
46:00
activities. Capitol's staff went to the Climate Justice Alliance's website and found images included
46:04
one of the bulldozers that went through the fence when Hamas attacked Israel on October
46:08
seventh, Texas. No surprise, Slotnik is already in talking about the County
46:13
Commission. Well, that'll be announced this evening five o'clock. That's when we'll
46:16
find out who the replacement for Kent Carper on the Canaan County Commission will be.
46:21
Seven names qualified, the ones who are all Democrats that live in the
46:23
correct magisterial Districts commission President Lance Wheeler, Commissioner Bensolango. They will sit down
46:30
and try to pick from that list. If they cannot agree, then names
46:32
will be submitted to them by the Democratic Executive a Committee of Kanawa County.
46:37
Again, I've had texts that said, well, this person's in and that
46:39
person's in. So we got two. According to our listeners, we have
46:43
two people that are definitely in. So we'll find out officially at five o'clock
46:47
this afternoon. Will of course be watching the meeting and we'll have all the
46:51
info online, in on the air, and I have already made arrangements or

starting to make arrangements to have whoever the person is to be on the show

47:12
just show's just been all over the place this morning. Apparently I haven't angered
47:16
enough people, So let's a little bit of a can of worms as we
47:20
close the show, because I love to do that. Is it time to
47:23
take a look at banning cell phones and schools? I think it's time to
47:29
look at banning cell phones in a lot of places, including restaurants and stores.
47:32
But that's just me old guy David back for a second straight day.
47:36
WSAZ dot com shared a story about a high school in Des Moines, Iowa
47:42
that is banning students from using their phones, headphones, earbuds, et cetera
47:50
at school. Now. It isn't an all in one time approach. They
47:55
actually won't implement the program until next year, giving the kids, or more
48:00
importantly, mommy and daddy, probably Mommy more than daddy time to adjust to
48:06
it. As is true in most cases, the kids will probably be fine
48:09
with losing the phones. It's the helicopter parents that are going to lose their
48:14
crap over it. Studies have shown that the prolonged periods of being connected isn't
48:21
good for one's mental health, and the average teenager uses some sort of social
48:27
media more than eight hours a day eight hours. One of the school administrators
48:32
called it reimaging the school without phones, which is kind of a novel concept.
48:40
To those of us who grew up in the seventies and eighties or even
48:43
sooner, who somehow left our houses at seven point thirty in the morning managed
48:46
to go all day without talking to mommy or being connected, since we weren't
48:52
connected anything in those days. The school is also encouraging parents not to give
48:59
smartphones to their kids until at least age fourteen, and not allowing them on
49:07
social media at all until age sixteen, which is something that almost every psychologist
49:15
in America agrees with it. I was reading an article last night about John
49:20
Fetterman Democrat, and a high ranking Republican whose name escapes me for some reason,
49:25
that are kind of on the same kick. That's saying that the kids
49:29
should not be allowed on social media at all. They're willing to legislate this
49:32
until age sixteen. I think there's too many ways around that, but I
49:38
think it might be a good idea in theory. And again, I think
49:43
the kids will do better than what you think. I think it's the parents
49:47
who can't text their kids that'll have bigger issues with it. And as is
49:52
always the case, I like to preface subjects like this by saying I don't
49:57
have kids, My wife and I are child free by choice, but when
49:59
I do, i'd like to bring up subject like this. I do consult
50:02
with my friends who have kids or now I'm at the age when people my
50:07
age have grandkids. One of my good friends, who as a kid that
50:13
just graduated from high school here in Kanawha County and he has a daughter who
50:17
was still in high school, was telling me something I did not know when
50:21
we had this discussion several months ago. How many apps that his kids have
50:27
to use to keep up with things related to school. This, I mean,
50:34
these are apps that they have to use to keep up with things like
50:37
practices, et cetera. It's I guess that's something I hadn't thought about.
50:45
So it's a teachable moment, you know, for me as as well.
50:52
I do think that bless we are connected as a society, maybe even with
50:59
adults, the better, the better we may be. How many times you
51:02
walk into a restaurant and see two people or even a family out the dinner
51:07
and the whole table two people to five are all buried in their phones.
51:14
How many parents use tablets as a babysitter in a restaurant rather than teaching their
51:20
kids. Teaching their kids to behave, or telling them they're gonna bust their
51:23
butts if they don't behave, just easier to stick electronic device in them.
51:29
I think sometimes I think it's what some parents, the way some parents look
51:32
at it. I know, another subject for another time. We'll get into
51:37
that in detail. At some point, is it time to ban cell phones
51:39
in school? School administrators, medical and psychological experts say it may be text
51:47
says any truth that Winfield High School coach Smolder will be the next head coach
51:52
CAPL Midland. I don't have any idea Texas banning cell phones and schools and
51:58
other places looking like a true Republican control freak. It's a texture. Our
52:05
legislature should do something like no phones in the school thing for our school system
52:08
statewide. Yep. But you're gonna have to get the adults off of them
52:13
too, because the adults, and my and my experience in going into schools
52:16
and I have gone into a lot, the teachers and the other staff are
52:20
just as bad. It's not worth the kids. So you gotta look at
52:22
that. Dave Island Show brought to you part by Pinnacle Consultants is a Pinnacle
