- 0:07Hi everybody, welcome to New York Yankee Baseball. I'm Phil Rizzotto along with Bill White, Frank Messer, and John Gordon.
- 0:13As the Yankees play the final game of this four game series with the Red Sox, the Red Sox have won two of the first three games.
- 0:19And the Yankees will have Dave Rigetti going today against John Cudor.
- 0:24And we'll be back with the starting lineups right after this.
- 0:28They say a rainbow is a fleeting thing, but not when you capture it on Kodacolor2 film from Kodak.
- 0:35Capture all the colors in the rainbow. Radiant colors that nature can make fall.
- 0:44Reds and silas, blue sky above. There's a film to capture all the stories it tells.
- 0:51Oh yeah, you know it's true. A great American storyteller is Kodak and you.
- 1:01Look at this shot I got of a double rainbow over a waterfall.
- 1:05Incredible. That's what I call vivid color. That's what I call color from Kodakolor2 film.
- 1:10Kodak, Kodakolor3. A great American storyteller is Kodakolor2.
- 1:18For color just the way you remember it, get Kodakolor2 film.
- 1:22For every kind of picture, Kodak has the right kind of film.
- 1:25Oh yeah, you know it's true.
- 1:29Kendall Motor Oil. The oil of racing champions Don Garless, Early Haywood, and the choice of Dick...Page?
- 1:37Who's Dick Page?
- 1:38That's me.
- 1:39But you're not.
- 1:40No, I don't race. But I've got a big investment in my car.
- 1:43And I protect it with Kendall Superb 100 Gasoline Saving Motor Oil.
- 1:48Keeps my car running smooth and helps save gas.
- 1:51Protect your investment with Kendall confidence.
- 1:55Kendall Superb 100 is available at all R&S straw stores.
- 2:00I've been telling you a lot lately about Yankee's Franks. The great Franks you enjoy at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:05You know you can get Yankee's Franks at your local supermarket.
- 2:08And you know they're made by Colonial who have been famous for Colonial quality for over 50 years.
- 2:14Well, do you know that you get the same great quality in Colonial bacon?
- 2:18It's better tasting, leaner bacon that cooks up with the same great quality in every single slice.
- 2:24So if you like Yankee's Franks, try Colonial bacon.
- 2:27It's better bacon just like Colonial. Yankee's Franks are the best Franks you can buy.

- 3:00Well, here are the starting lineups for today's game.
- 3:03For the Boston Red Sox, Jerry Remy leads off at second base.
- 3:07Batting second playing third, Wade Boggs.
- 3:10Jim Rice in left field, batting in the third spot.
- 3:14The cleanup batter in center field, Tony Armott.
- 3:17Dwight Evans will be in right field batting fifth.
- 3:20The designated hitter batting sixth, Reed Nichols.
- 3:23Dave Stapleton will be at first base batting seventh.
- 3:26Doing the catching and batting eighth, Jeff Newman.
- 3:29And the shortstop batting ninth, Glenn Hoffman.
- 3:32And as we told you on the mound, the left hander, John Cudar.
- 3:35For the New York Yankees, there's been a change in the Yankees' starting lineup.
- 3:40Bert Campanaris will lead off playing third.
- 3:43Greg Nettles, who is scheduled to play in bat second, has come up with conjunctivitis,
- 3:48also known as Pachy.
- 3:50So Greg will not be playing today.
- 3:52Don Mattingly will be at first base and bat second.
- 3:55In center field, batting third, Dave Winfield.
- 3:58So Winfield will be playing center today.
- 4:00Lou Pennella will be in left field batting cleanup.
- 4:03The designated hitter batting fifth, Don Baylor.
- 4:06Which one are you going to do in the catching and batting sixth?
- 4:09In right field, back in action again, batting seventh, Steve Kemp.
- 4:13Roy Smalley will be the shortstop batting eighth.
- 4:16And at second base, batting ninth, Andre Robinson.
- 4:19And on the mound for the New York Yankees will be Dave Rigetti.
- 4:24Rigetti has won nine, lost three, with a 3.53 earned run average.
- 4:30So the Yankees right now are two and a half games behind the league-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
- 4:38Toronto continues to play excellent ball, even though they were beaten by Seattle yesterday.
- 4:45But Toronto is a game ahead of Baltimore, two ahead of Detroit, two and a half ahead of the Yankees, and the Red Sox.
- 4:52Our four behind, Milwaukee Five and Cleveland, nine and a half.
- 4:59By the way, today's color guard is from the United States Navy ship USS McCandless.
- 5:08And the national anthem is going to be played by the Jazz Great and our buddy Chuck Mangione and five members of the Other People Parachute Team.
- 5:18They'll bring the Stars and Stripes into center field as the anthem concludes, and that should be a glorious sight.
- 5:24Watching those parachuters come down.
- 5:28And another very warm day here at Yankee Stadium.
- 5:38Bill White looks like he's got some scores over there.
- 5:42That should be interesting.
- 5:45Well, first, Scooter, the Yankee scoreboard is always brought to you by members only,
- 5:49members of Outerwear and Spectatorwear. In the American League, only two games going at this point.
- 5:59Chicago leading Minnesota two to nothing after one, and the Tigers leading Baltimore three to nothing after one and a half.
- 6:05That ballgame being played in Tiger Town in the next, the late demonstrate Philadelphia for a night game.
- 6:11In the first of two, it's Pittsburgh seven, the Cardinals two after seven.
- 6:15That ballgame had been delayed by rain for 43 minutes, and Montreal is leading Chicago four to nothing after three.
- 6:24That's also the first field with a doubleheader.
- 6:27And those are all the scores that we have as of now.
- 6:31The Yankee scoreboard has been brought to you by members only.
- 6:36You're in great company when you put on members only Outerwear and Spectatorwear.
- 6:41You have the style, the fit, and the colors that go anywhere, anytime.
- 6:45With members only, the company you keep is the best there is.
- 6:52All right, William, thank you. And so we'll not interfere with the game.
- 6:56It's time for a few birthdays.
- 7:00Yes, it is. Becky Siegel, the mother of Al Siegel, who worked at the press cape in here many years,
- 7:05celebrating her 96th birthday at the Hebrew home for the agent at Riverdale.
- 7:11Happy birthday, Becky. How about this? I thought Becky was old in 96.
- 7:16Jeanette Blymac makes that 99th birthday.
- 7:23Whose grandmother is that?
- 7:26Henry Blymac, Blymac's grandmother.
- 7:33Wow, that's two good ones. On the 4th of July, I hope we get George Steinbrenner's birthday today.
- 7:39Happy birthday, George, wherever you might be.
- 7:42And by the way, tonight Yankee Doodle Dandy is going to be on with Jimmy Cagney.
- 7:47Don't miss that one. Here's a very unusual one.
- 7:50These people are from Liberia, South Africa.
- 7:55And they are sports fans.
- 7:58They have a little boy, and he was outside, I had my picture taken with him.
- 8:03His name is Augustiniak, that's after Mike Augustiniak of the Jets.
- 8:08They're a football player. Augustiniak Scooter Collins.
- 8:12And he was born on my birthday, September 25th, 1983.
- 8:17You know, he couldn't have been born then. He had to be born on 1982.
- 8:23But that's very unusual. Cute little kid, had my picture taken.
- 8:28Mother says he looks just like you, Felt, which was very nice.
- 8:33Also, now we go to some younger people.
- 8:37Happy birthday to Laney Savage, 12 years old, from Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
- 8:45And also, I was supposed to do this on television, but I'm not going to be on TV today.
- 8:51Bruce Dalton, who is the slow-mo man, cameraman.
- 8:55Maybe Bill White can do that later.
- 8:58That was a special request by Don Carney, by the way.
- 9:01On a day like this, he says, I don't care how many birthdays you do.
- 9:05Got a couple extras there. Bill got time.
- 9:10Wally Lewicki is 14 today.
- 9:14He's the son of one of the paramedics with the Yonkers Police Force.
- 9:18Happy birthday, Wally.
- 9:20Jimmy Miali is recovering from spinal surgery at the Westchester County Medical Center.
- 9:30And, wait a minute, the parachutists, everybody looking up, looks like the parachutists are coming in.
- 9:39The brain birthday greetings.
- 9:42They've probably got a couple more for me.
- 9:45Where are they looking over? I hope they don't miss Yankee Stadium. That's the other people parachute team.
- 9:52Will be flying in.
- 9:58And I don't blame everybody for looking up. You know, this area, this is not a big landing area.
- 10:07And let's turn it over to Bob Shepard.
- 11:37Great job by Chuck Mangione.
- 12:02This is standing ovation for Chuck. And we'll be back right after this.
- 12:10Hey, you know what? What?
- 12:12Charlie Brown and the gang will be camping out at McDonald's this summer.
- 12:15You mean Snoopy will be sleeping on the roof between the Golden Actions?
- 12:18Not exactly. You see, the camping adventures of the whole Peanuts gang have been captured on five 16-ounce Camp Snoopy glasses, especially designed by Charles Shultz.
- 12:27Ooh, pretty colors. I wonder if adults can go to Camp Snoopy.
- 12:30I don't see why not. If you hurry and get started, you can collect a whole set of glasses.
- 12:34Well, could you agree?
- 12:35I will.
- 12:36Could agree.
- 12:37Yeah.
- 12:38I don't know why you say that.
- 12:39I never had a reason to say it.
- 12:40There'll be a different glass each week.
- 12:42Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Woodstock.
- 12:44Yes, Snoopy.
- 12:45Yes.
- 12:46Snoopy, but he's not sleeping on the roof of a town.
- 12:48No, he's not sleeping.
- 12:49Well, this is the first week of camp for the Peanuts gang, and already Charlie Brown wants to go home.
- 13:03So come to McDonald's and buy a Camp Snoopy glass for 59 cents, plus tax with the purchase of a medium or large soft drink and take Charlie Brown home with you.
- 13:13But you better hurry. Charlie Brown won't stick around too long. Or for good at participating McDonald's while supplies last. Prices may vary.
- 13:22What's for you? Oh, thinking hard and just working hard all day. So is to you. Oh, you do, you know, think of business.
- 13:44Oh, you do, you know, think of business.
- 13:58The crowd screaming as four now five of the other people parachute his team have landed at Yankee Stadium, each one carrying the American flag. I'd say to one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen.
- 14:14That's a real pose. And really appreciate it. Enjoy that show. Every one of perfect landing as the Yankees take the field.
- 14:29And I said, you talk about the great way to get festivities off on the Fourth of July. See an old glory coming down underneath the parachute.
- 14:44The youngsters are packing up their parachutes and carrying them in. Oh, I'd say they better get out of those uniforms. Oh, they got to be very, very hot.
- 15:02Start for the Fourth of July festivities here. 2094 degrees at game time. I think it's quite a bit more uncomfortable than yesterday. The humidity seems to be a little higher.
- 15:23Nevertheless, Dave Rigetti is going to have to hang in there. And even this series out, Rigetti has won nine and lost three as we told you.
- 15:33Looks like you've got to keep the Red Sox off the board at least for the first inning.
- 15:40They have been jumping on the Yankee starters and getting off to that lead. And the Yankees always playing catch-up baseball, which is very difficult.
- 15:50So Rigetti will be working to Remy Boggs and Rice here in the top of the first inning. And so far the crowd is disappointing.
- 16:02But hopefully there's a traffic jam outside and they're having a little trouble getting in.
- 16:07Well, Dave Rigetti has completed his warm-ups, landing a flip to Robinson and Smalley, to Campanera's back to Rigetti.
- 16:15We're ready to go. Jerry Remy stepping in the leadoff and ready to lead off for our group, Bill Weiss.
- 16:21All right, Scooter. Rigetti trying for his temp here this afternoon. He's won nine, lost three. This is the second time he has faced the Red Sox.
- 16:33He was a loser back on June 24th. He gave up five runs on seven hits and five on third innings. He's pitching to Jerry Remy.
- 16:41And the ball game is underway. First pitch to Remy. He's the best ball. It's too high. Ball one. Remy batting 249.
- 16:48No home runs. Twenty-five runs batted in. Campanera shortens up for him at third base and so does batting.
- 16:54They have first. Rigetti's one-oh pitch to Remy. Swung on this. He's swung on the Yankee outfield.
- 17:01Panama playing near the line. Left field, left channel. Windfield over toward the left center and also in close. And the right fielder, Steve Kipp, has been in right center.
- 17:11Ten-flag channel. One-one. Betch to Remy. First ball is called. Throwing two to one and two. Steve Marmos. Home plate outfired.
- 17:20Rick Green is at first base. Terry Newdek, you're at second base. And now a part over at third. Yod one ball. Pitch strikes on the left hand and hitting to Terry Remy with Wade Fogg from Decker.
- 17:33Rigetti over the head with the one-two pitch. It's high two and two.
- 17:40Bill Mitch and the Red Sox have taken two out of the three games played. So far we should probably say Jim Wrights has taken two out of the three games. Four home runs for the big get.
- 17:51Two-two to Terry Remy. Swung on and fouled back.
- 18:00And Rigetti gets the base ball. Denny Hills coaching third base for the Red Sox and Tommy Harper coaching at first base.
- 18:10Final game of this four-game series in the Yankees' final game before the all-star game.
- 18:17Two-two to Remy. Swung on and fouled back. I forget to screen. Remains two balls and two strikes.
- 18:26Here's the all-star game at Comiskey Park.
- 18:31You're playing all-star game there?
- 18:33Yes. As a matter of fact, I did play an all-star game there.
- 18:37And that was the year that Ted Williams went back for a round kind of fly ball and broke his elbow, left elbow, leaving it hitting the auxiliary scoreboard out there.
- 18:49Rigetti, stocked two-fifths to Remy. Swung on and misses. That's a high-flying ball. Terry Remy going to the off-side and scores first down.
- 18:58Here's a Rigetti. Fans Remy. That'll bring on Wade Muggs.
- 19:02Yeah, he threw them all fast balls. Bill never went to an off-speed pitch.
- 19:06That's his 78 strikeout. Rigetti leads the Yankee pitching staff in strikeouts. He has a dark-out 78 now.
- 19:18Ron Gidra has 65 strikeouts. And Shane Raleigh has dark-out 62. Here's Boggs. He's tough to fan. Batting 361. No homeruns. 34 runs batting in.
- 19:29And he takes the fast ball. It's too high. Ball one.
- 19:33On deck is Jim Rice. And he's been a one-man wrecking crew for the Red Sox in this series.
- 19:401-0 pitch to Boggs. Breaking ball in there. Ball strike. It's 1-1.
- 19:45Yeah, Rice has not had a... Well, no homer here is cheap unless you get it right down each line. He's hit him a left center and right center.
- 19:531-1 pitch. Check swing inside and high. They check the third base on fire hall, Clark.
- 19:59And on bill too far, two balls and a strike on Boggs. He's been around here quite a while. You see as many balls fly out...
- 20:08No, never. This whole year. I can't believe it.
- 20:12Here's the 2-1 to Boggs. Swung on this one too.
- 20:18One out, nobody out. No score just underway from the stadium. The Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
- 20:26A big Fourth of July giveaway here in the stadium. A lot of Yankee caps.
- 20:34Here's the 2-2 to Boggs. Ball strike.
- 20:42And they're two outs.
- 20:52And here's Jim Rice.
- 20:57Jim Rice has six bases and 14 times a bat through the first three games. Four of those six bases home runs.
- 21:07And the fast ball is sliced foul into the seats off the right side. Strike one.
- 21:15Rice batting 2-99. 22 home runs and 58 runs batted in.
- 21:23Brigetti working quickly with the one strike pitch and he's high with it one and one.
- 21:28Rice leads the American League with 22 home runs. And he leads the American League and runs batted in with 58.
- 21:36Ron Kittle, a fine rookie for the White Sox right behind him in both categories. Kittle has 18 home runs and 55 runs batted in.
- 21:44Ball is fouled off right side. It's short of the upper deck. One and two on Jim Rice.
- 21:49Brigetti's challenging everybody with that fast ball. He threw one breaking pitch to Boggs. That's all, buddy.
- 21:56Side up Rice on two good fast balls.
- 22:03Brigetti gets struck out for first two and has one ball to strike out on Rice.
- 22:09He gets a sign. Keeps the deals one-two pitch. Just missed outside. Two balls, good strikes.
- 22:18Fans reacting to every Brigetti pitch here. Yankees trying to even a series up against the two games in peace.
- 22:31Two to the Rice. High ball, three-and-two. On deck is Tony Armas, the center fielder.
- 22:45Now, Brigetti decides to take a walk on the back side of the mound. He'll go to the roster back.
- 22:53He'll mention the Yankees. Two and a half games behind the throttle bulls.
- 23:00Yankees in fourth place now in the American League with the East.
- 23:05Here's the Vahaw pitch to Rice. Inside all four of the Rice folks.
- 23:13That'll bring up Tony Armas. Blue Jays at 143, lost 33.
- 23:19Baltimore Heave back there in second place. Tigers two back.
- 23:23And the Yankees five even over. They're 140, lost 35. They're two and a half back.
- 23:29Red Sox four. Cleveland, Milwaukee five. Cleveland nine and a half.
- 23:37Here's Armas batting 241. 18 home runs and 48 runs batting in.
- 23:41Rice not a big lead at first. He's being held by Mattingly.
- 23:44And the best ball is supposed to make to Armas.
- 23:51A day like this you don't like to see anybody walk anybody.
- 23:53But I don't think it's too bad an idea to walk Rice every time he comes up.
- 23:59Every time?
- 24:00Joe McCarthy's theory, never let the big man beat you.
- 24:03So you're going to miss by Armas. No balls, two strikes.
- 24:07I mean I remember one game he walked St. William's four times and he made his pitcher that day.
- 24:13I forget who it was. It might have been Gomez who didn't have a knuckleball.
- 24:17Throw him all knuckleballs.
- 24:20He told him before the game I don't want this man to hit a fastball today.
- 24:25Why is he rolling up?
- 24:27Oh that's making the travesty of the game.
- 24:30I wanted to. I don't want him to hit.
- 24:34Thought he could have hit him too. That's an easy way to put him off.
- 24:38One ball, two strikes on Armas with Rice at first base.
- 24:44Two odds, no score in the top half of the first inning.
- 24:47And the pitch.
- 24:50What a miss.
- 24:51McGinney strikes on the side.
- 24:53No runs, no hit to walk the man left after one half.
- 24:57Red sucks nothing and the Yankees are coming up.
- 25:00If you've got the moods we've got the sneaker. Pro players.
- 25:04Are you ready pro players? Are you ready for action?
- 25:09When you're wearing pro players you're the main attraction.
- 25:14Now there's an all new pro player sneaker. New pro players flaps.
- 25:18It's not a loafer, it's not a laser. It's an all new European styled athletic shoe with flaps.
- 25:24It's attached like magic. Just slip them on, attach the flaps and you're ready for action with style.
- 25:31European style you'll wear for work and for play. New pro players flaps.
- 25:35You've got the scene to believe or get a pair today.
- 25:38You better get some double takes. Pro players, you're moving out and looking great.
- 25:44Pro players, getting some pro players, now you've got what it takes.
- 25:49Are you ready pro players? Are you ready?
- 25:53New pro players flaps.
- 25:54Pro players are available at all metropolitan area modelled sporting goods stores.
- 26:00Dave, are you on the phone with the foreign car dealer?
- 26:03Yes, Lewis.
- 26:04Tell him you need a transmission appointment today.
- 26:06I did, he said two weeks.
- 26:07Then tell him it's an emergency, you're a volunteer fireman.
- 26:10Well I'm a volunteer.
- 26:11No, tell him I'm having a baby.
- 26:13Well I'm a volunteer wife and my baby is having a fireman.
- 26:15Well?
- 26:16Two weeks.
- 26:17Come to Amco Transmissions. Amco fixes foreign car transmissions without an appointment.
- 26:23Our experts fix more of them than anyone and we'll get your car back to you fast.
- 26:27Amco.
- 26:28Want to join me, Will?
- 26:31Alright, John Tudor, ready to pitch to Bert Campaneras, Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield.
- 26:39Here at the bottom of the first, William.
- 26:41Alright, Scooter, Campaneras batting 320, no home runs, four runs batted.
- 26:48Eddie Yankees had a schedule to play but he has a high problem.
- 26:51And Campaneras is playing third and Don Mattingly who had been penciled in the leadoff moved down to the second slot.
- 26:57So it'll be Campaneras, Mattingly and Winfield against left-hander John Tudor.
- 27:02And the first pitch to Campaneras but it fouled.
- 27:05Back on the screen, Bert trying to push the ball to the right side.
- 27:08No balls and a strike on Campaneras.
- 27:12Tudor's 1-5 lost four.
- 27:18One has only started against the Yankees at Fenway this year.
- 27:21But it fouled again on first base.
- 27:23That'll make the Yankee dugout.
- 27:24No balls, two strikes on Campaneras.
- 27:26By the way, William, this is the 207th happy birthday to the United States of America.
- 27:35That's right, 1776, right?
- 27:39Remember those days well.
- 27:43Pitch is high, you reincarnated.
- 27:46Yep, man it's a Yankee doodle day, somebody wrote down here.
- 27:50One-two pitch to Campaneras.
- 27:53Line base in left field.
- 27:55Can't be around first base, he'll hold as Rice's throw goes into second.
- 28:00So Campaneras leads off with a single.
- 28:02That's so often, a guy tries to run a couple of times,
- 28:08fouls him off and misses him and gets a base hit.
- 28:11And here's Don Mattingly.
- 28:13Mattingly hit his own run in Boston off Tudor.
- 28:18Pulled it down the right field line.
- 28:19So he's facing Tudor here with Campaneras at first base, nobody out.
- 28:23Don Mattingly at 265.
- 28:25There goes Campaneras, pitch is high, throw down a second won't be in time.
- 28:30Campaneras got a walk from the lead, stole a second.
- 28:33He got a walk from the lead, even hesitated his step.
- 28:36That's his best way of stealing bases.
- 28:38And Tudor, even though he was looking right at him, didn't throw over there.
- 28:42So Campy is doing his third base here, he's also been not three times.
- 28:46Pitch was high to Mattingly so they count as one ball and no strikes.
- 28:49No score playing the bottom half of the first inning.
- 28:52Now Tudor sets.
- 28:55And backs off and time is called.
- 29:01Now we're ready.
- 29:03One old pitch to Mattingly.
- 29:05Outside as he fakes a bun, it's two balls and no strikes.
- 29:19They're playing Mattingly straight away in the outfield.
- 29:22Two old pitch, Swanniland lifted to left.
- 29:25Right started back, now flips the glasses on, comes in and makes a play.
- 29:29And Campaneras has to hold at second base and there's one away.
- 29:35Dave Winfield a batter.
- 29:39Winfield batting 244, 13 home runs and 46 runs batted in.
- 29:46Dave will represent the Yankees at this year's All-Star game in Chicago.
- 29:52He'll be the only Yankee, right?
- 29:54Now Ron Gidrey has a bad back, he's been scratched and Tiffy Martinez-Ballamore will take Gidrey's place.
- 30:01Dave leading the American League in game winning runs batted in.
- 30:08And Tudor checks Campaneras, pitch to Winfield, misses inside, ball one.
- 30:13I see where Reggie Jackson is trying to get out of comparing, he's got the bad ribs.
- 30:18He said he's hitting only 214 but that's been the whole official word as yet.
- 30:23They wouldn't let him get away with it.
- 30:25What do you mean get away with it?
- 30:27There's a lot of players that would rather have the three off days.
- 30:30Not you or me, but a lot of other players.
- 30:33Pop file off first base, it's out of play, one and one on Winfield.
- 30:42I think they are.
- 30:45You think they are?
- 30:48No, I think Reggie Jackson is a little bit of an ego with the batting effort.
- 30:54Yeah, but he wants to be introduced.
- 30:57That red light goes on, 74 million people watching.
- 31:02He wants to be there.
- 31:04I hope he is.
- 31:06Count of balls to strike on Winfield with Campaneras down at second and one away.
- 31:12Tudor's pitch, swung on and missed.
- 31:15One ball, two strikes on Winfield.
- 31:24Dealing on deck is Lupinello.
- 31:27Late start here because of the festivities.
- 31:31Parachutists bringing in the American flag.
- 31:36Chuck Manning and Gionni.
- 31:39Very good.
- 31:41And the pitch misses inside, two and two.
- 31:43Chuck will probably come up.
- 31:46He's a great interviewer.
- 31:54He's a Yankee fan, right?
- 31:55Oh yeah, really is.
- 31:59Count of balls, two strikes on Winfield with Campaneras down at second and one away.
- 32:03Tudor sets, two-two pitch, outside, three and two.
- 32:18I don't think this crowd is disappointing, Scooter.
- 32:20This is going to be around 40.
- 32:22I know, but I thought they'd pack every seat.
- 32:25There's beaches around here, you know.
- 32:27Yes, I know, I see.
- 32:29Here's a three-two pitch to Winfield.
- 32:32And it's high ball for Winfield walks.
- 32:36Let's take a 10-second Lon Jeans timeout on the New York Yankee Radio Network.
- 32:40Lon Jeans is the official timekeeper of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
- 32:45It's the wit and wisdom of Ira Pistel, overnight, here on Talk Radio 77.
- 32:52Campaneras down at second base.
- 32:58Winfield on it first with one away and Lu Penella's a batter.
- 33:02Penella batting three, 26, two home runs, 13 runs batted in.
- 33:06We're still in the bottom of the first, no score in the game.
- 33:09Don Baylor exercising in the on-deck circle as Tudor sets.
- 33:14And a fake throw back to second base with Remy sneaking in behind Campaneras.
- 33:19And it can't be had to slide back in, no throw from Tudor.
- 33:27Both the second baseman, Remy, and the shortstop, the Hoffman, shorten up a little bit towards second.
- 33:33Now the set.
- 33:34Remy, once again, sneaks in behind Campaneras, and this time Tudor backs out.
- 33:39And Penella decides to take a walk as time is called.
- 33:44Don Zimmer coaching third for the Yankees and Yogi Berro over at first base.
- 33:49As Penella's back in and Tudor's ready.
- 33:51Checks are runners.
- 33:53And the first pitch to Penella misses outside, ball one.
- 34:04After the all-star break, the Yankees open up in Kansas City against the Royals.
- 34:11And on to Minnesota and back home.
- 34:151-0 to Penella.
- 34:16Swung on line right to the shortstop, Hoffman.
- 34:18He'll go over to second base touch-up, and they have the double play.
- 34:22Campaneras forced up behind Blue Penella.
- 34:25No runs, one base hit, one man left on base.
- 34:28At the end of one, the Yankees nothing, the Red Sox nothing.

- 36:10Well, I've got just one more birthday, Bill White. Top of the day.
- 36:14It's Jonathan Trapp. Now, he'll be 16 on our off-day Thursday, July 7th.
- 36:19I had mentioned that's my daughter Penny's birthday and John Gordon's birthday on July 7th.
- 36:25But Jonathan Trapp will probably be at the Motor Vehicle Bureau at 9 Thursday getting his learner's permit.
- 36:33And that's a hairy experience if you've got kids just getting ready for the get their permit.
- 36:39Well, are you going to announce that when he passes, you're going to congratulate him on the air?
- 36:43Yes, if he passes. But it took me three times to get my first license.
- 36:47There they are.
- 36:48The abortion buggy?
- 36:50No, but it was the old stick shift with the clutch, the old Ford Model A.
- 36:55I'll have to get back the morsees up.
- 36:58Whoa, gee, all.
- 36:59Yeah, that was very easier than cars, Bill.
- 37:02Here's Dwight Evans leading off against Dave Rigetti in the second.
- 37:05Rigetti gets the breaking ball in for a strike.
- 37:08No score. We're in the top of the second. Evans, Nichols, and Stapledon.
- 37:12Three right-handed batters do up against Yankee left-hander Dave Rigetti.
- 37:16And Rigetti's one-strike pitch to Evans. It's low, one-and-one.
- 37:20Dave struck out the side in the first.
- 37:24Although he walked Jim Rice, he got Remy Boggs and R. Moss.
- 37:28And he now has 80 strikeouts.
- 37:31The one-one pitch.
- 37:34Ball strike two. Fast ball. Got the outside corner. Ball and two strikes on Evans.
- 37:43Yankees playing Evans straight away.
- 37:47There are four pitchers in the American League who've won ten or more games.
- 37:53As the fast ball is high to Evans, it's two and two.
- 37:57Rick Honeycutt of Texas leads with 11.
- 38:00Dave Steve of Toronto has won 10, along with Rick Sutcliffe of Cleveland and Ron Gidry.
- 38:07Here's the 2-2 to Evans.
- 38:10He's hung on and missed. Got him with a breaking ball.
- 38:13Gidry. Rigetti strikes out Evans.
- 38:16And that's the fourth strikeout for Dave Rigetti.
- 38:20He's pitching like Gidry pitched about. What was that, 1977?
- 38:2678. Gidry struck out all those people.
- 38:30125 ball game.
- 38:32Here's Reid Nichols, a designated hitter. Whoa!
- 38:35Chuck Mangione! I can hear that global horn!
- 38:39Holy cow! How you doing, Chuck?
- 38:43Reid Nichols takes high ball. One tuck high door.
- 38:47Dylan, I really enjoy it.
- 38:49Yes. That's a tough job playing the national anthem with the field of global horn.
- 38:54Now, wait a minute. One thing, Mike.
- 38:57That pitch is high.
- 38:59You mentioned he had the Italian colors on. He's got a few too many in there. Some of them are not.
- 39:04That's right.
- 39:06All right. I like that. I rock that, Chuck.
- 39:09It's two balls, no strikes on Nichols.
- 39:12After all, the national anthem is everybody's.
- 39:14That's right. You're right.
- 39:16Still the right center field might be trouble on the run.
- 39:18His camp buddy will get there and make the play.
- 39:21And they're two outs.
- 39:24That'll bring on Dave Stablen.
- 39:29Stablen batting 214. Three home runs. 33 runs batted in.
- 39:35Bob Rossuto is checking out again.
- 39:39Oh, how he hits Chuck.
- 39:41Yeah. All right.
- 39:43Two outs, nobody on. No score here in the second.
- 39:46No score in the ball game between the Yankees and the Bosaques.
- 39:52And here's Brigetti's first pitch to Stablen. And it's taken for a strike.
- 39:57That was the first ball anybody hit. I'll be at five straight up.
- 40:00That's right. You're going to come up there. Join us.
- 40:03You just learned how to keep score. You got it made.
- 40:06It's another journey to a rainbow.
- 40:09Here we go. He's ready.
- 40:11The one strike pitch to Dave Stablen. And it's high, one and one.
- 40:16Got Chuck Mangione with us up here in the booth.
- 40:19He did such a great job with the national anthem.
- 40:23And that's tough with the blue ball horn.
- 40:26One-one pitch. Changeup. Taking low. It's two and one.
- 40:30Chuck, that's Phil Pepe was very upset with the way we were pronouncing it.
- 40:35Phil came up with something, huh?
- 40:37Yeah. He spelled it phonetically for Phil, and Phil has done a little bit better job.
- 40:42He should know anyway.
- 40:44You say spaghetti. Spaghetti. You know how that works.
- 40:47Oh, foul on first base. No play for the first baseman. That's Don Manley. Cannot get to it.
- 40:55Chuck, you've been following these three games with the Boston.
- 40:59And Bryce has had heck of a series.
- 41:01He's had your hand. But I'll tell you, the spirit in the Yankee clubhouse is one of cool confidence.
- 41:07Well, it always has been.
- 41:09They're amazing. And I've never met such a wonderful group of guys with so much talent and yet so humble and really enjoy playing baseball.
- 41:17They're going to do it.
- 41:18All right. It's two and two on Dave Stablen.
- 41:24Two outs, nobody on base. No score in the game.
- 41:28We're going to play the second inning. Brigette pitch.
- 41:30Breaking ball for another miss.
- 41:32And that'll be down to the side.
- 41:34Three up, three down. We've been talking to Chuck Mangione and Chuck Hayes. Good game with it.
- 41:39Thank you. I'm going to play the Canadian man's anthem with the All-Star baseball.
- 41:43Perfect. Perfect. We'll be looking at you.
- 41:45Thank you.
- 41:46And at the end of one and a half innings of play, the Yankees nothing, Boston nothing.

- 43:28Papa Manjou.
- 43:30Up in Rochester, 73 years old.
- 43:33Oh man, happy birthday.
- 43:35Yes sir.
- 43:37Little plaster, a little vino that night.
- 43:39Little peonty.
- 43:41Chuck says they celebrate all year long.
- 43:44That's the way they do it.
- 43:46Yep, here's Don Baylor against John Tudor, second inning of scoreless ball game.
- 43:51And the curve ball misses low to Baylor.
- 43:54It'll be Baylor Weininger Kip against left-hander John Tudor.
- 43:58So far the story's been Dave Brigetti is struck out by...
- 44:02Flash ball to Baylor, the strike one and one.
- 44:06Tudor with the one-one pitch to Baylor.
- 44:09And it's low, two balls, hand-to-strike.
- 44:12But Weininger is on deck.
- 44:14Baylor batting 298, eight home runs, 32 runs batted in.
- 44:19Tudor working quickly with the two-one pitch.
- 44:22Swung on and popped foul, that'll come back toward the screen.
- 44:24Newman gets a late jump, now he's coming back, but he'll run out of room.
- 44:28Baylor is in the lead.
- 44:30Two balls, two strikes on Don Baylor.
- 44:36It's two and two on Baylor.
- 44:42And Tudor gets a new baseball.
- 44:46Looks at Newman for a sign.
- 44:48Now he's really in the lead.
- 44:50Baylor is in the lead.
- 44:52Baylor is in the lead.
- 44:54Baylor is in the lead.
- 44:56Baylor is in the lead.
- 45:00Now he's ready with the two-two delivery.
- 45:02Outside ball, three, three and two.
- 45:08Yabonair has led the ball, he marked with a single, then he stole second,
- 45:12but was doubled up when Pernille aligned to Glen Hoffman to shortstop.
- 45:16Pay our pitch to Baylor.
- 45:18Swung on and fouled back.
- 45:20And the count remains, three and two.
- 45:24And the count remains, three and two.
- 45:32Chuck Mangione has got to leave.
- 45:34He's going to draw the winners for all the gifts today.
- 45:40Baylor is one to the left, but Ronnie Sandistro is coming on.
- 45:42Still digging in now.
- 45:44With the glasses down, he makes the catch for the first time.
- 45:48And we'll see Chuck downstairs.
- 45:50Let's hear it.
- 45:52Oh!
- 45:54Hey Chuck, chill along the men's amari, okay.
- 46:08Butch Weininger in.
- 46:10And the first pitch to Butch Batting right in is taking for a strike on the outside corner.
- 46:14No balls under strike.
- 46:16You know, two balls hit the left field, Bill.
- 46:18Rice had to come in.
- 46:20He could have held, but still.
- 46:22Well, Rice is not playing shallow.
- 46:24He plays the deep left.
- 46:26And the breaking ball is outside to Weininger.
- 46:28It's one and one.
- 46:30Butch Batting, three oh seven, five home runs, 19 runs batting in.
- 46:32One-one pitch.
- 46:34Line one, hopper, through Boggs, down left field line.
- 46:36Weininger on first base, he'll go to second.
- 46:40And Rice is told he's in third base.
- 46:42That was a tough chance for Boggs.
- 46:44That could very well be a double.
- 46:46I mean, that was a short cut.
- 46:48Error five.
- 46:50Man, that was a tough error.
- 46:52Who was that, Coach, you can tell us.
- 46:54What was his first name?
- 46:56That said, good field, no hit.
- 46:58Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, wait a minute.
- 47:00I'll think of it in a moment.
- 47:02He always...
- 47:04Yup.
- 47:06But I think with Boggs, we got good hit.
- 47:08He's having some problems with the leather.
- 47:10But he can hit that ball.
- 47:12Oh, he can.
- 47:14So Weininger on second base.
- 47:16He might field it.
- 47:18Kemp is batting a 268.9.
- 47:20Olm runs 37 runs batting in.
- 47:22And he takes high, ball one.
- 47:24Kemp was shaking up a bit.
- 47:26And he glazed it home plate during the Baltimore series
- 47:28with Rick Dempsey when he got cut down at the plate.
- 47:30Tried to bowl Dempsey over.
- 47:32Ran into a lot of plastic
- 47:34and other catching gear equipment.
- 47:38Foul back.
- 47:40It's one and one.
- 47:42Don't see glaciers at home plate anymore.
- 47:46You what?
- 47:48Don't see glaciers at home plate anymore.
- 47:50No.
- 47:52And that was one of the rare ones only because Dempsey got the ball in time.
- 47:54You got to kind of side step and try and swipe Kemp.
- 47:58Or you're really good cream.
- 48:00One ball, one strike on Kemp.
- 48:02With Weininger down at second.
- 48:04One away, no score.
- 48:06And the bottom of the second.
- 48:08The pitch is a curve ball.
- 48:10In for a call strike one and two.
- 48:12You know also you see a lot of head first slides in the home.
- 48:14Which I think is terrible.
- 48:16Catch above that.
- 48:18Oh yeah.
- 48:20Well since you're not blocking the plate anymore doesn't make any difference.
- 48:22Now help get the ball and come back and try to tag you.
- 48:24One two.
- 48:26And on the ground first base it's a fair ball.
- 48:28Stapleton has it.
- 48:30Throws to the pitcher.
- 48:32To the recovery.
- 48:34And they've got Kemp and Weininger
- 48:36who's the third base.
- 48:38One out three to one.
- 48:46Here's Roy Smalley.
- 48:50The Yankee shortstop's batting 280.
- 48:52Ten home runs, 31 runs batted in.
- 48:56Weininger now at third with two outs.
- 49:00Two under winds and deals to Smalley.
- 49:02And it's high ball one.
- 49:14Weininger walking a big lead off third base.
- 49:16And he stops.
- 49:18Pitch is a call strike on the inside corner.
- 49:20It's one and one.
- 49:22Weininger went a long way down the third base.
- 49:24I stood here.
- 49:26If he had a little speed he could have stolen home.
- 49:28He just took a big slow deliberate windup.
- 49:34One count, one ball, one strike on Roy Smalley.
- 49:40Now the pitch.
- 49:42Swung on and fouled back up on the screen.
- 49:44One two.
- 49:46Yankees nothing.
- 49:48The Red Sox nothing.
- 49:50Bottom half of the second inning.
- 49:52Tudors one two pitch to Smalley.
- 49:54Get on the ground off first base.
- 49:56It's a fair ball.
- 49:58Caught by Stephen right on the bag.
- 50:00He touches up there.
- 50:02And that'll retire the side.
- 50:04No runs, no hits.
- 50:06And they're in a band left.
- 50:08They play two.
- 50:10They're in a band left.
- 50:12They're in a band left.
- 50:14They're in a band left.
- 50:16They play two.
- 50:18Yankees nothing.
- 50:20The Red Sox nothing.
- 50:22Listen as a man enters the most surprising back seat in driving.
- 50:26Hop in the back Bill.
- 50:28Good morning.
- 50:30What's that?
- 50:32That is all the space in the back of his new Nissan Stanza.
- 50:36Presenting the roomy front wheel drive Nissan Stanza.
- 50:38That's your Dodge and dealer.
- 50:40It's the economy car with the cavernous back seat.
- 50:44But the real surprise is the way this beauty delivers.
- 50:47Sparkling performance and outstanding mileage.
- 50:50EPA estimated 31 MPG.
- 50:5245 highway with five wheels.
- 50:54Use 31 for comparison.
- 50:56Your mileage may be slightly milder.
- 50:58Move over Bill.
- 51:00I have to pick up Harry.
- 51:02Hi everybody.
- 51:04What's wrong?
- 51:06Wow your first time in the back of a Nissan Stanza.
- 51:08It's a band.
- 51:10It's a band.
- 51:12It's a band.

- 51:26For all you do you know the king of beers is on and off.
- 51:30For all you do.
- 51:32It's bought for you.

- 51:42It's bought for you.
- 51:44Stay to it.
- 51:52We're going to the top of the third inning.
- 51:54The smallest ball game.
- 51:56Only one hit in the game.
- 51:58The Yankees have that.
- 52:00That was a single by Cameron Harris leading off the bottom of the first.
- 52:02And Rigetti in two innings has struck out five.
- 52:05Out of the six possible outs.
- 52:07One fly ball right field by Reed Nichols.
- 52:09It'll be Jeff Newman, Glenn Hoffman, and then back to Jerry Remy.
- 52:13The top of the order here in the top of the third.
- 52:17It's a big ball game for the Yankees prior to the all-star break.
- 52:21Told you they trail by just two and a half games going into today's action.
- 52:27That would be a nice comfortable spot to be in.
- 52:33Everybody get three days off to relax, get strong again.
- 52:39The pitch to Newman is in there. Strike one call.
- 52:43Frank Messer has joined us.
- 52:45So happy Fourth of July, Scooter.
- 52:47Yeah, thank you, Frank.
- 52:49We've been giving our greetings to Thorpe.
- 52:51Did he check it?
- 52:53No, he didn't. He swung. Oh, and true.
- 52:55Newman can't believe it. I can't either.
- 52:57The ball hit home plate.
- 52:59Curve ball that is the first base umpire, Rick Reed.
- 53:02He said he went around.
- 53:08He threw a curve ball that bounced off the plate.
- 53:10But look at it again.
- 53:12He stopped that swing.
- 53:17All right, but it's going to.
- 53:19Which side of the radio are we looking at?
- 53:21Oh, that's right.
- 53:23We got a monitor back. Keep forgetting.
- 53:25Wow, upstairs and out of play high and deep down the right field line.
- 53:35So it's oh and true.
- 53:41Even the announcers enjoy a three day respite.
- 53:43Frank Messer. Boy, you got that right.
- 53:45Be nice to up in the mountains.
- 53:47Oh yeah, that's where you're heading.
- 53:50The oh two delivery outside one ball two strikes.
- 53:53Great to hear from.
- 53:57Little Goldstein.
- 53:58I'm going to go up and visit Lou and Jackie for the next three days.
- 54:02Paul Grossinger.
- 54:04The Addis Family. Looking forward to it.
- 54:08Worth it just to hear Lou Simon.
- 54:12Lou Goldstein do as Simon says.
- 54:14High and it's two and two.
- 54:17He's all excited. He's going to do a show down in New Orleans.
- 54:22He's going to be one of the mentally retarded.
- 54:24Special Olympics.
- 54:26He is really excited about that.
- 54:30All right, two and two now to Newman.
- 54:32The pitch struck him out.
- 54:35He has the first race so far.
- 54:37This time he says no. He went further that time with his swing than he did the first time.
- 54:43He really did.
- 54:45But things even up.
- 54:49Three balls two strikes now on Jeff Newman.
- 54:56He's getting his payoff pitch.
- 54:58Struck him out anyway.
- 55:00Holy cow. Six strikeouts.
- 55:04In just two and one third innings.
- 55:06My Reggetti is strong.
- 55:08And he's striking them all out with the fastball.
- 55:10Yes.
- 55:11He's coming that fastball up there. I really don't know.
- 55:13It's got to be mid-90s.
- 55:15Wouldn't you say?
- 55:16It's got to be.
- 55:18Nobody has pulled the ball.
- 55:20Nichols fly to right.
- 55:22Steven Poulbaugh is having a ball.
- 55:24This is strike two. Glenn Hoffman the shortstop.
- 55:26Hoffman hitting 252.
- 55:28One home at 20 RBI's.
- 55:32Reggetti rocks back.
- 55:34And the curve a little bit low.
- 55:36One-on-one.
- 55:38He's got a mean curveball.
- 55:44One-on-one delivery.
- 55:46Oh, he's flying a pitch about a foot inside a sharp breaking slider.
- 55:50Man, he is mean today, Frank Messon.
- 55:54He really is this season.
- 55:56Probably the best I've ever seen Reggetti.
- 55:58Oh, boy.
- 56:00And the fans, of course, hungry for strikeouts now.
- 56:02They're lined up.
- 56:06The pitch just missed the outside corner two and two.
- 56:10Reggetti's last star when he pitched his first major league shutout against Baltimore was that last Wednesday.
- 56:15He didn't walk anybody and struck out eight men in that ballgame.
- 56:21All right.
- 56:23Reggetti winds the pitch.
- 56:25Struck out.
- 56:27Holy cow, another wicked slider down and in.
- 56:31It's seven strikes out of the ballgame.
- 56:33That's unbelievable.
- 56:35And that'll bring us Jerry Remy, who struck out leading off the ballgame.
- 56:45He has struck out some tough men to strike out, Remy and Boggs, who are contact hitters.
- 56:53All right, Campanaris moves in at third.
- 56:59And a pitch to Remy fouled back and out of place, strike one.
- 57:03Greg Nettles was penciled in to start this game at third, but he has conjunctivitis.
- 57:11I don't know which eye I have to get which eye in.
- 57:15I don't recall.
- 57:17Usually if you get it in one, though, it will spread to the other.
- 57:19Uh-huh.
- 57:20Pitch is low, one on one.
- 57:22Conjunctivitis is highly contagious.
- 57:25Yes, also called Tinkai.
- 57:27Well, they used to say when we were kids in school, if you looked at somebody that had Tinkai, you would get it.
- 57:32Is that okay?
- 57:33Oh, yeah, it is very, very contagious.
- 57:37One-one delivery outside two-one.
- 57:39That was, of course, an old wives tale.
- 57:41You can't get it by looking, but it was, it is.
- 57:47Remember, what, a couple of years ago, Oscar Gamble was out for a while suffering the same thing.
- 57:53Very annoying.
- 57:54And if you're hitting up there, you don't want to have that blinking and kind of blurred vision.
- 58:00Two-one delivery. Bouncer hits a short.
- 58:03Smalley, gross, in, time to get him.
- 58:07Great play by Smalley, a campanera that's right in front of him.
- 58:10Almost blocked his vision.
- 58:12Three up, three down, end of two and a half.
- 58:15It's the Red Sox nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 58:18You know, I've been quoted as saying I've spent almost as much of my life in Yankee Stadium as I have at home.
- 58:23Now, that's got to mean I love the Yankees.
- 58:25And I love what they're doing for the kids of our city with Frito Lay,
- 58:28maker of Lay's and Ruffles brand potato chips.
- 58:31Through the Frito Lay Yankees Challenge for Children,
- 58:33they're making it possible for the children at Memorial's Throne Kettering Cancer Center
- 58:38to have a greater chance for a brighter future.
- 58:40Frito Lay and the Yankees, teamed up for a better New York.

- 59:46Well, you know, it's up there where the weather's nice and cool this afternoon
- 59:49toward upstate New York.
- 59:50Let's listen to our Yankee game.
- 59:51Great Yankee fan, very great friend of mine, High Agents,
- 59:54is celebrating his birthday today.
- 59:56And his son is here in the ballpark watching the ballgame.
- 59:59It's a great day to have a birthday, aren't they?
- 1:00:02I'll have that born on the 4th of July.
- 1:00:04Yep.
- 1:00:05Andre hits one piece, the left field right's going to the left.
- 1:00:09And he's going to the right.
- 1:00:11Andre hits one piece, the left field right's going back.
- 1:00:16Now he's stopped.
- 1:00:17You know the ball's not carrying enough today, right?
- 1:00:19No, it really isn't.
- 1:00:20The flags are flowing in from right toward the left field ball, right?
- 1:00:25By the way, right made that catch, but he started back as though it was going to be over his head
- 1:00:29and then stopped and had it come in to make the play.
- 1:00:31And Andre hit it right on the nose.
- 1:00:33One away now, Cameron Harris, who's singled and stole second,
- 1:00:38his first time up, Chris DeCampi, bluffs the bunt, takes it low, ball one.
- 1:00:44First time up, tried a bunt twice.
- 1:00:46Now the morphin's singing.
- 1:00:48Got something for us, huh, Mr.?
- 1:00:50Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:51All right, the pitch, he takes a strike, one-on-one.
- 1:00:54That would have been a good pitch to bunt right there if he wanted to.
- 1:00:56The Yankee School Board is brought to you by members only,
- 1:00:59makers of AutoWear and SpectatorWear.
- 1:01:02One-one pitcher, curve high, two-on-one.
- 1:01:05Minnesota 5, Chicago 2 at the end of 4.
- 1:01:07Detroit leads Baltimore 4-1 at the end of 3.
- 1:01:10Todd Cruz has homered for the Orioles' long run in that ballgame.
- 1:01:14A little over, and it's going to drop in right-center field.
- 1:01:18Campanero's on with his second base hit.
- 1:01:21Debi just served that softly in the right center.
- 1:01:27Well, he had some acquisition at Todd Cruz' rank for Baltimore.
- 1:01:30Well, he's got a good job for them.
- 1:01:32Pittsburgh beats St. Louis 7-2 in the first game of a holiday double header in Pittsburgh.
- 1:01:36Rick Roden got the win, Jason Thompson homered.
- 1:01:39Second game Cardinals fail to score the Pirates of Batting in the first.
- 1:01:42Neal Allen against Jim Biddy.
- 1:01:45All right, Don Mattingly the batter.
- 1:01:47Throw to first, Campy back. Campy got a running start in his first stolen base.
- 1:01:56Now Tudor gets the sign.
- 1:01:59Another throw over.
- 1:02:02Montreal leads Chicago 6-1 at the end of 5-1 half. Home runs Andre Dawson, Gary Carter, and Dawson again.
- 1:02:08He's hit a pair.
- 1:02:10Backing up the pitching of Steve Rogers going for his 12th win of the year.
- 1:02:13Other games are later starts.
- 1:02:16All right, and still another throw over there.
- 1:02:19The Yankee scoreboard has been brought to you by Members Only,
- 1:02:21makers of hardware and spectator wear with a style of fit and the colors you'll want to wear everywhere.
- 1:02:26Work for the Members Only label that tells you it's the original at fine stores near you.
- 1:02:32And four in a row he's thrown to first base.
- 1:02:35And you don't usually get Campy when he is standing still.
- 1:02:40He likes to get that kind of walking, running start.
- 1:02:44Big lead. Here's the pitch to the plate. The curve is over. Strike one call.
- 1:02:51Mattingly he fly to left field his first time up.
- 1:03:00Out Tudor sets.
- 1:03:02And a pitch out but he was not going. It's 1-1.
- 1:03:07Mattingly can sort of set on a fastball don't you think?
- 1:03:11You would think so with Campy at first.
- 1:03:20All right, Tudor sets again as a throw over to first and Campy's back easily.
- 1:03:27He really telegraphed that one. That was not his good move.
- 1:03:34Five times he's thrown over there now trying to get Campy.
- 1:03:38He comes set as the sixth time and none of them have been close.
- 1:03:45Campy is getting a little upset. Mattingly steps back out.
- 1:03:50Try to get yourself psyched up and set the batter's box as he keeps throwing to first.
- 1:04:01All right, he's ready.
- 1:04:03And there goes Campy. Good, holy cow. Why did Mattingly swing at this?
- 1:04:07A pop-up. Campy's going to have to hustle and get back.
- 1:04:10They're going to double him. And they do.
- 1:04:13Holy cow, Campy there has had that bag stolen without having to slide.
- 1:04:18And Mattingly's swung at it, pops it up into a double play.
- 1:04:234-4-1 for the double play. No runs, no errors, nobody left at the end of three.
- 1:04:29Red Sox nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:04:33You can talk with drink. It's got life.
- 1:04:49You've got five vitamins, three minerals, and a little bit of protein.
- 1:04:53No leading Sox drink has you being driven.
- 1:04:55Great. Hey, you and the Sox drink really have life.

- 1:05:57For the fourth year in a row, the airline, more passengers have flown than any other in the free world.
- 1:06:04And now let's take a 10-second Longines timeout on the New York Yankee Radio Network.
- 1:06:08Longines is the official timekeeper of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
- 1:06:14What a unique view of the world and its problems join Ray Breve at 3 a.m. here on Talk Radio 77.
- 1:06:21Ray Breve!
- 1:06:24Scottish ball game through three. The Yankees have the only two hits in the game, both owned by Burt Campanaris,
- 1:06:29the Red Sox third baseman, Wade Boggs has made one error.
- 1:06:32And now Rigetti will be pitching to Boggs, Rice, and Armas here on the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:06:40All right, Frank. Only two men have been able to hit the ball off Rigetti,
- 1:06:46and both have hit to the opposite field. Nichols flying to right, Remi left-handed, bouncing short.
- 1:06:52Boggs struck out his first time up, and Rigetti's first pitch is high and tight, ball one.
- 1:07:00And he already has seven strikeouts in the ball game, three in the first, two in the second, two in the third.
- 1:07:10Bragg comes back, and a drive to straightaway center.
- 1:07:13Winfield is there backing up, reaches up, that ball was big.
- 1:07:17I'll tell you, I'm the breaking ball, I think, who had that time, Scooter, and he jumped all over it.
- 1:07:21Very seldom would you see Boggs even hit to straightaway center field.
- 1:07:25All right. Most everything is to left and left center.
- 1:07:30All right, one away, and Jim Rice will walk his first time up.
- 1:07:36Another Fourth of July birthday, Jim Bozier over in Hankinsack, born on the Fourth of July.
- 1:07:41What a day to be born on the birthday of our great country.
- 1:07:51All right, Jim Rice.
- 1:07:55Showed you how to walk his first time up.
- 1:07:59And there's a high fly to right by Kemp with plenty of room.
- 1:08:03Moving in under it makes the catch two men around.
- 1:08:07You always breathe a lot easier when you get Rice out.
- 1:08:11Especially the way he's hitting right now.
- 1:08:13Oh, what a series he's had.
- 1:08:14Four home runs.
- 1:08:16He's had six hits, and now 15 at bats in the series, and four of those six hits have been overs.
- 1:08:23A lot of display of fireworks he's put on.
- 1:08:26Tony Armott struck out his first time up, two out, nobody on.
- 1:08:37And a bouncer hits slowly to third, Kemp and Harris.
- 1:08:40Nice bounce throw in time to get him.
- 1:08:43Play by Kemp.
- 1:08:46Again, free up and free down, and at the end of three and a half.
- 1:08:49Red Sox nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:08:53The question isn't whether or not you need a new Nissan Sentra.
- 1:08:57The question is which one you need.
- 1:09:05Choose 40 hatchbacks, roomy four doors, family-sized wagons.
- 1:09:09What a choice. I need it.
- 1:09:11And if ultra mileage is what you need, the Nissan Sentra standard two-door sedan is EPA-estimated 35 MPG.
- 1:09:18The highway with five speed.
- 1:09:20These 35 will comparison your mileage with a different highway flow.
- 1:09:23I need it.
- 1:09:24This roomy five passenger front-wheel drive miracle could be the best value on the road.
- 1:09:29Stick a bicer's wheel, charge 49.49 for the standard two-door sedan, excluding title, taxes, license, and destination charges.
- 1:09:37We need this car.
- 1:09:39We need this car.
- 1:09:41We need this car.
- 1:09:43We need this car.
- 1:09:45Choose the Nissan Sentra you need at your Datsun dealer.
- 1:09:49Baseball fans head for the ballpark in your own official New York Yankee T-shirt.

- 1:10:24Well, it'll be Dave Winfield, Luke Minnumer, and Don Baylor up for the Yankees here in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:10:31We talk about Rice's 22 home runs.
- 1:10:33He and Balboni lead the country, I think.
- 1:10:35Balboni hit his 22nd last night for Columbus.
- 1:10:38Unbelievable.
- 1:10:40He and Balboni, a mile-matter giant, just continues to mow down that baseball.
- 1:10:46He's got to get a chance at a big game.
- 1:10:48A mile-matter giant just continues to mow down that baseball. He's got to get a chance at a big league someplace.
- 1:10:55By Winfield.
- 1:10:58Swings and fouls after balls, strike one.
- 1:11:01He's been swinging a lot of high pitches lately.
- 1:11:03Yes, he has. He's been swinging at pitches out of the strike zone high.
- 1:11:06Of course, that's where it gets around. The pitchers know it. Of course, all the Boston pitchers know it because they have seen him in these four games.
- 1:11:14The Bronx USA is number one in the Big Apple. They've got a good brochure on the Bronx right here.
- 1:11:20Yankee Stadium included in that, of course. Great places to go. Guide to dining in the Bronx.
- 1:11:26Cultural organizations of the Bronx.
- 1:11:29Don't forget the Bronx Zoo.
- 1:11:30And the Bronx Zoo, that is one of the big features of the Bronx.
- 1:11:36Winfield hits a high fly. Didn't hit it well. Armand's moving in to his left.
- 1:11:41Makes the catch. One man up.
- 1:11:44You know, Rebecca took Mickey over to the Bronx Zoo about a week ago and they really enjoyed it. Great attractions over there.
- 1:11:50Oh, it really is something.
- 1:11:52You know, they got an elephant ride that lets you, the kids, get on an elephant and ride.
- 1:11:56No kidding.
- 1:11:57Yeah. They got a petting zoo over there.
- 1:12:07All right. Lou Pennella, who hit a bullet to the shortstop, was turned into a double play his first time up.
- 1:12:19The left-handed shooter delivers to Pennella outside ball one on deck, Don Veller.
- 1:12:30Oh, taking a lot of time between pitches. Doing it more this year than ever before.
- 1:12:39Now he's ready.
- 1:12:43And the pitch is right in there, strike called one on one. Lou turns around, walks out of the batter's box, comes back.
- 1:12:55Still not ready. He digs a hole and he fills it full of dirt and then he digs it again.
- 1:13:05Just can't get comfortable there, can he?
- 1:13:07No. Looks like Lou might be getting a note from the American League office like Harbrow did.
- 1:13:12Curve way high and outside, two and one.
- 1:13:16He steps out again, checks his spike shoe, marks a little dirt out.
- 1:13:29Two-one delivery, foul to the right side, back in the seats, out of play, two and two.
- 1:13:47Let's see what he does this time.
- 1:13:50He makes sure the umpire knows he's not quite ready.
- 1:13:53Now he's set. The two-two pitch, foul upstairs and out of play right over our heads.
- 1:14:00Looks like Lou's really backed off the plate now, Scooter.
- 1:14:02Yes, it does. I'd say that he does that changes stances so often, according to who the pitcher is.
- 1:14:10Again, Lou puts this top sign up, doesn't want the pitcher to pitch while he's not looking. Now he's ready.
- 1:14:18Two-two delivery, foul to the right side, back in the seats, out of play.
- 1:14:25Lou will take another little stroll.
- 1:14:29Tugs at his batting glove.
- 1:14:33Check the attendance while he was looking around.
- 1:14:37Maybe he's got a new clause in his soundtrack.
- 1:14:41And again the stop sign as he digs the hole a little deeper for the back foot.
- 1:14:46Now he's ready. And two to his two-two delivery.
- 1:14:50Foul back off the umpire, that hit Steve Palermo solidly with a foul tip off the mass.
- 1:15:01And it's still two and two.
- 1:15:09See Palermo, as he opens both hands up, he still evidently works the plate without using a ball and striking to get her.
- 1:15:16That's very unusual.
- 1:15:18It is.
- 1:15:20All right, once again the two-two pitch. Foul back on the screen, out of play.
- 1:15:28I'm going to tell you, you know, as long as Palermo's been around, he has not used the indicator, which is very unusual.
- 1:15:33I have to wonder if one of the other umpires might just keep one in chase.
- 1:15:37I would think so because there are some times when the scoreboard might be wrong.
- 1:15:43It would be a big argument.
- 1:15:45Palermo keeps it in his mind.
- 1:15:48And one thing, you know, I like a lot of things about Palermo, but one thing, after every pitch he will indicate the ball strike out with his fingers, which is, I think, always good.
- 1:15:58How about Jerry Newdecker? He lets you know on each pitch.
- 1:16:01The pitch again hit deep to left field. Right has got wrong though. Back here, the warning track at the 387 foot sign makes the catch.
- 1:16:10By yesterday that ball would have been out of here.
- 1:16:12Yes it would have been. That ball would have been on the visiting ball plate yesterday.
- 1:16:15Yep. Two men out.
- 1:16:22That will bring up Don Vailer, who will fly to left his first time up.
- 1:16:25There have only been two hits in the ball game as Frank Jolie and Kevin Harris has both of them.
- 1:16:31Red Sox, no runs, no hits. They have made an error.
- 1:16:41Pitch to Vailer. Wow, on an off-speed pitch right off the end of the bat, strike one.
- 1:16:47He did a change of speed very well.
- 1:16:49Yeah, he's getting very smooth out there today.
- 1:16:57Curve way outside, one-on-one.
- 1:17:01Each pitcher has walked only one man, though Tudor has not struck out anyone.
- 1:17:05Reggetti has struck out seven.
- 1:17:09One-one delivery foul, again off the end of the bat. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:17:15Indication, Reggetti has thrown probably more pitches than Tudor has.
- 1:17:19Oh yes, absolutely.
- 1:17:28Two out, nobody on, no score, bottom of the fourth.
- 1:17:32A foul upstairs and out of play.
- 1:17:36On deck, Butch Weineger.
- 1:17:48And the one-queue delivery.
- 1:17:50Fly ball left center, but Armant is going to get there. He's calling and makes the catch.
- 1:17:56Three up, three down. At the end of four, it's the Red Sox, nothing in the Yankees.

- 1:19:09Here's proof. New York taxis drove over a quarter million punishing miles with no oil-related failures.
- 1:19:15That's Havilland Supreme 10W40 protection.
- 1:19:18And here's more proof. After two million miles of state trooper driving, no oil-related failures.
- 1:19:24That's Havilland Supreme protection. And here's even more proof.
- 1:19:27In fuel economy tests, it delivered improved mileage compared to a conventional 10W40 motor oil.
- 1:19:33Texaco, Havilland Supreme. They've got the proof.
- 1:19:37Good afternoon, everybody. John Gordon with you now as we bring you the top half of the fifth inning
- 1:19:53in the scoreless game here between the Red Sox and the Yankees.
- 1:19:57And game number four of this four-game series.
- 1:20:00And of course, the Yankees need a victory here this afternoon.
- 1:20:03They square up in the series. Right now they trail by two games to one.
- 1:20:12And the leadoff batter for the Sox will be number 24, Dwight Evans.
- 1:20:18And he'll be followed by Reed Nichols and then Dave Stapleton.
- 1:20:23No score in the game, and the Yankees have the only two hits, both of them from Burt Campanier.
- 1:20:27It's a single in the first inning, and Campy have a single in the third inning.
- 1:20:32And a couple of base runners. Jim Rice was a base runner back in the first and a walk.
- 1:20:37Dave Winfield reached in a walk in the first inning, but DeWinegar reached in an air.
- 1:20:42Those are other base runners in the game. Evans struck out his first time up.
- 1:20:46Ragetti through the first four innings of pitching.
- 1:20:51Has walked one and struck out seven. And the curve is inside.
- 1:20:55It's one ball and no strikes to count to Evans.
- 1:20:59Evans four for 11 in the series and currently hitting 232.
- 1:21:0315 homers on the air. Swings and fouls went back to the netting.
- 1:21:07And a count in the ball and a strike. Here's the 1-1 delivery. It's a fastball high.
- 1:21:12And it'll be two balls and one strike.
- 1:21:14Dave Ragetti seeking to become the second ten-game winner for the Yankees.
- 1:21:20Ron Gintry has won ten while losing four.
- 1:21:23Here's a check swing, but Evans went around on it.
- 1:21:25And a strike to hand it two balls and two strikes.
- 1:21:30Ragetti is number four in the American League in winning percentage with a 9-3 record.
- 1:21:37California's Bruce Keeson is number one.
- 1:21:45Two balls, two strikes to count to Evans. And here's the 2-2 delivery.
- 1:21:49A fastball foul way up to the upper deck off to the right.
- 1:21:53And a count is holding it two balls and two strikes.
- 1:21:58Well, the Yankees and the rest of the major leagues are off tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.
- 1:22:04The All-Star break coming up. The All-Star game to be played Wednesday night in Chicago at Comiskey Park.
- 1:22:10Yankees resume action against Kansas City Friday night at KC.
- 1:22:13And of course we'll be there to broadcast.
- 1:22:15Here's the 2-2 delivery inside three and two.
- 1:22:21Yankees open a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:22:27And then a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:22:30And then they're back home on the 14th of July against the Texas Rangers.
- 1:22:35Straight to Baypett swing.
- 1:22:37Strike three, break them out, a fastball.
- 1:22:39A strikeout to the game forward, Dave Ragetti.
- 1:22:43Boy, he is pitching some game here this afternoon.
- 1:22:50Well, Ragetti had eight strikeouts in his last start, the shutout win over Baltimore.
- 1:22:55And he had eight against Oakland back on the 28th of May when he beat the Athletics by a 5-2 score.
- 1:23:03Dave's career high is 11, and that was against the Boston Red Sox in the 1981 season.
- 1:23:09And you would have to say he certainly has a shot at that with eight strikeouts in four and a third inning pitching so far.
- 1:23:17Here's Reed Nichols who is 0-1 in the game.
- 1:23:20He lands a foul down the left field line to the upper deck and out of play, and the count is a ball and a strike to Nichols.
- 1:23:33In the first nine batters that Ragetti faced in the first eight outs, Reed Nichols was the only Red Sox batter that did not strike out.
- 1:23:43He flied to right field here, Steve Kemp, and here's the 1-1 delivery. Changeup wide, two balls and one strike.
- 1:23:51Ragetti struck out the side in the first, Remy Boggs and Hermas.
- 1:23:56Two in the second, Evans and Stapleton.
- 1:24:00Two in the third, Newman and Hoffman.
- 1:24:03Remy batting for the second time in the third inning, grounded out short to first.
- 1:24:08Swing and a fly down the right field line. This one is curving foul. It will be out of play.
- 1:24:12Chasing Steve Kemp, but no chance to get it, and the count holding it. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:24:18No score in the game, the Red Sox and the Yankees in the Monday afternoon.
- 1:24:23Holiday special here. Good crowd on hand.
- 1:24:28Nichols batting with one down and nobody on. Two balls, two strikes. Ragetti to the line, and here's the pitch. Turner, line foul.
- 1:24:42Fast as he goes to the third base coaching box, and it's 2-2 still to count to Reed Nichols.
- 1:24:52The Red Sox are making a bid to finish strong before the all-star break. They're presently 38 and 37, one game over 500.
- 1:25:03And they're only four games behind the division leading Toronto Blue Jays.
- 1:25:092-2, and here's Ragetti to the line and the pitch. Best ball, high and away. 3-2 in a full count.
- 1:25:16The Yankees, of course, sitting in a very good position. They're presently 5 over 500 at 40 and 35.
- 1:25:24And trail the division leading Blue Jays by just two and a half games.
- 1:25:29Great two-pay pitch. Uniside ball four. Missed with a fast ball. Nichols draws the second walk.
- 1:25:35Given up by Dave Ragetti, he's advanced and Dave Stapleton will be the hitter.
- 1:25:44Ragetti is listed among the league leaders in the American League.
- 1:25:48He's tied for third in the wins column with nine.
- 1:25:54He was number five in strikeouts with 77, but the eight that he has now, giving him 85,
- 1:26:02puts him up into the number four spot ahead of Lamar Hoyt.
- 1:26:11Here's the set and the pitch out, but the runner Nichols is holding.
- 1:26:15And it'll be ball one to Stapleton. Strikeout swinging back in the second inning.
- 1:26:21Yankees now bringing the Red Sox now bringing in the Red Sox batting in the top half of the fifth.
- 1:26:28Dave Ragetti to the right-handed hitting Dave Stapleton. Nichols with the lead, battingly holding.
- 1:26:33And here's the pitch. Herv is in and it's one strike to go. One ball, one strike.
- 1:26:42Jane Raleigh is scheduled to open the road trip at Kansas City on Friday night.
- 1:26:47Jane's seven and seven on the year after losing yesterday's game to the Red Sox.
- 1:26:52And he'll be pitching against Larry Gura. Ragetti up high for a ball and two and one.
- 1:26:59And Ragetti is scheduled to pitch on Saturday against Bud Black.
- 1:27:03And Ron Gidry is scheduled to go on Sunday against Paul Splendor.
- 1:27:09Those are the pitching matchups for the Kansas City Series on Friday night at Kansas City.
- 1:27:17Two balls, one strike. The runner at first is Nichols and Ragetti will check him back to the bag with a pick-off move.
- 1:27:23And he's back safely.
- 1:27:25This is the first inning that Ragetti has been behind Red Sox batters.
- 1:27:29He was 3-2 to Evans and struck him out. 3-2 to Nichols and he walked him.
- 1:27:34Now he's behind Stapleton at 2-1. There goes the runner to get a pick-off.
- 1:27:37Battingly to second. The tag by Spaldy in the off call.
- 1:27:41So Dave Ragetti erases the base runner with a beautiful pick-off move.
- 1:27:471-3-6. And now stealing will be Reid Nichols.
- 1:27:522-2 down in the inning and it's two balls and one strike to count to Stapleton.
- 1:27:56Now the Red Sox who are not a running team.
- 1:28:04They have only 11 stolen bases all season long.
- 1:28:08That's the 13th time they've been cut down attempting to steal.
- 1:28:12Here's the 2-1 to Stapleton. He bounds one foul past the third base coach Eddie Ost.
- 1:28:19And it is a 2-2 count now. To the right hand is hitting Red Sox for his baseman.
- 1:28:35So Dave Ragetti on a 2-2 delivery to Dave Stapleton.
- 1:28:39Should he reach Jeff Newman with the axe and the pitch.
- 1:28:42Just missed outside with a best ball.
- 1:28:45And a full count of 3-2. Outfield plays Stapleton straight away.
- 1:28:51Stapleton has five hits in the series.
- 1:28:54And he came in with an 0 for 23 slate.
- 1:28:57Fighting a season long slump. 3-2. Pay pitch.
- 1:29:01Pumped up in the infield. Right behind the pitchers man.
- 1:29:04Campanaris. Robertson. And it's going to be Andre.
- 1:29:07Robertson makes the catch. Stapleton is out and the inning is over.
- 1:29:10And that's going to be all for the Red Sox here in the fifth.
- 1:29:13And it's no hit, no hit. There's nobody left.
- 1:29:16And now through four and a half innings of play it's the Red Sox nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:29:25Nice restaurant. Are you advertising the Yellow Pages?
- 1:29:28Sure do.
- 1:29:29I have ever since I opened.
- 1:29:31How many directories do you advertise in?
- 1:29:33How many?
- 1:29:34One. Why?
- 1:29:35Well just because your business is in the city.
- 1:29:37That doesn't mean all your customers are.
- 1:29:39People who live in the suburbs come to the city for dinner.
- 1:29:42Commuters use Yellow Pages directories where they work and where they live.
- 1:29:46So if I advertise in different directories I could get customers coming and going.
- 1:29:51Right. You should put your money in the book.
- 1:29:54The New York Telephone Yellow Pages in several directories.
- 1:29:58Because although four out of five adults turn to the Yellow Pages when they're ready to buy,
- 1:30:03they turn to different directories.
- 1:30:05And if they find me in all of them, my business could be much bigger.
- 1:30:09Yes. It's just one more way of putting your money in the book.
- 1:30:13The New York Telephone Yellow Pages is money in the bank.
- 1:30:17Money in the book is money in the bank.
- 1:30:21New York Telephone.
- 1:30:23Listen up, New York. I'm Luke Vanellas.
- 1:30:25I'm just going to tell you about how the Yankees are helping our kids.
- 1:30:28Fido-A, makers of Lay's and Ruffles Grand Potato Chips,
- 1:30:31is contributing $50 to the Memorial Sloan-Kellaring Cancer Center for every run the Yankees score.
- 1:30:37I plan to be the biggest contributor, and I'm sure my teammates will be thinking the same.
- 1:30:41So cheer us on and buy Lay's and Ruffles Grand Potato Chips.
- 1:30:44Together, Fido-A, Lay, and the Yankees are teamed up for better New York.
- 1:30:48Be part of the fun and remember, every time you cheer us on,
- 1:30:51you'll be helping us send some good cheer to the kids of New York.
- 1:30:54The Yankees' low representative in the All-Star Game will be starting up fielder Dave Winfield.
- 1:31:14Rob Gidrey was chosen to the All-Star Team, but because of back spasms,
- 1:31:20he was forced to relieve himself from the game, and he will not be in uniform Wednesday night at Comiskey Park.
- 1:31:29Don't forget now the Yankees take on the Rangers for a four-game weekend series.
- 1:31:34Still for the next home stand, July 14th through the 17th,
- 1:31:37they have a series to be highlighted by the annual Old Timers game on Saturday, July 16th.
- 1:31:42Don't miss seeing your favorite Old Timers, including the newest Old Timer,
- 1:31:46former Yankee Bobby Mercer, who will participate in his first game.
- 1:31:50Here's Butch Whitinger to lead off the Yankee fifth inning,
- 1:31:52and swinging on the first pitch from John Tudor, he pops it in the air behind second base.
- 1:31:57Jeremy Remi is out to make the draft for the out.
- 1:32:00There's one down at one pitch, and Kemp is stepping in before he bats.
- 1:32:04Let's take a 10-second Long Jeans timeout on the New York Yankee Radio Network.
- 1:32:08Long Jeans is the official timekeeper of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
- 1:32:14Dr. Lawrence Balter with his life's preparens.
- 1:32:17Weekend at 9 a.m., here on Talk Radio 77.
- 1:32:22This is Steve Kemp, who's 0-4-1 in the game, swings and misses on a Tudor fastball.
- 1:32:29It came in on his hands, and it is no balls in one strike.
- 1:32:33Kemp bounced out to the first baseman, Stapleton.
- 1:32:36He made the play to pitch his Tudor covering at the back, and is 0-4-1 in the game.
- 1:32:41Kemp's right back, and the fastball is down low, one ball and one strike to Kemp.
- 1:32:50No score in the game, the Yankees nothing, the Red Sox nothing, and here's the curve that's in.
- 1:32:55Catches the inside corner, and it'll be one ball and two strikes to Steve Kemp.
- 1:33:01This is Kemp's first appearance in the Red Sox series.
- 1:33:05He's been out, bothered by a bruised tailbone.
- 1:33:10Left-handed hitter against the left-handed Tudor.
- 1:33:13Curve is wide, and two balls and two strikes.
- 1:33:25Yankees had a couple of base runners in the first inning about their only real threat.
- 1:33:29Here's a line drive off the glove of Stapleton, the first baseman.
- 1:33:32He'll not be able to make the throw to Tudor covering at the back, and Kemp is going to reach.
- 1:33:37And it'll be a hit for Steve Kemp.
- 1:33:39Now Stapleton was moving to his left, trying to play the short hop on the low liner,
- 1:33:45and the ball kicked off his glove into foul territory.
- 1:33:49When Stapleton ran it down, he was right at the tarpaulin area,
- 1:33:54and he lost his balance momentarily and could not make a throw.
- 1:33:57Kemp has reached for the Yankees' third hit of the game, and Roy Smalley is going to be the batter.
- 1:34:05Smalley swings in the first pitch from Tudor, pops it foul off to the right.
- 1:34:08Newman is coming over, he may have room, it's just out of play.
- 1:34:12It's beyond the Yankee dugout in the third row of the box seats.
- 1:34:16Chuck Mangione almost got that one.
- 1:34:18He's sitting down there enjoying the game at the moment.
- 1:34:22It's part of his party that is with him that got that souvenir baseball.
- 1:34:31So it's one strike to count to Smalley.
- 1:34:33Roy mounts to the first base, been stapled and unassisted his first time up.
- 1:34:37Ball right to the bag.
- 1:34:39Stapleton caught it and stepped down first to retire him.
- 1:34:42One strike, now the set by Tudor, and he'll check the runner.
- 1:34:45Kemp back to the bag at first.
- 1:34:54Tudor ready to pitch now as he sets and again throws the first, but Kemp is back in time.
- 1:35:02Here's the set, the rack and the pitch, and a strike on the inside corner to Smalley.
- 1:35:06He takes it for a strike to one ball and two strikes.
- 1:35:14Outfield playing Smalley straight away at the infield, of course.
- 1:35:17Double play depth, they'd like to get something on the ground here.
- 1:35:22The Yankees have a base runner, Kemp at first.
- 1:35:24There's one out and Tudor again will check the runner back to the bag.
- 1:35:35Again, the left-hander Tudor as he looks to the runner.
- 1:35:38Here's the pitch, Smalley swings and bounces one on the right side.
- 1:35:40It's a base hit.
- 1:35:41Off at second base is Kemp and he'll hold there as Evans is up to the ball very quickly
- 1:35:47and makes a lot throw in to Remy into the infield.
- 1:35:50Back to back base hits by Kemp and Smalley, and the Yankees have runners at first and second.
- 1:35:55One away and Andre Robertson will be the hitter.
- 1:35:58That ball was just past the diving Jerry Remy at second base.
- 1:36:05And Andre stepping in.
- 1:36:09Robertson, oh for what, he lined out to left fielder Jim Rice his first time up.
- 1:36:15Smalley Yankees threaten to take the lead here and they find them half of the fifth inning.
- 1:36:19Two on, one down, and the pitch.
- 1:36:21Robertson swings and fouls a fastball back out of play and strike one to count.
- 1:36:37Andre Robertson the batter, Steve Kemp is at second base.
- 1:36:41And Roy Smalley behind him at first base.
- 1:36:44And the Yankees and the Red Sox in a scoreless game.
- 1:36:48Yankees have all the hits on the board, they have four.
- 1:36:51The Red Sox are still looking for their first hit off of Dave Rigetti.
- 1:36:54Now the set to look.
- 1:36:56And here's the tutor pitch.
- 1:36:58Andre swings and fouls another fastball off to the upper deck, off to the right.
- 1:37:02And the count is no balls and two strikes to Andre Robertson.
- 1:37:06Tutor ready as he checks the runners and the curve is wide.
- 1:37:23It's one ball and two strikes to count.
- 1:37:26The Yankees had two on in the first inning.
- 1:37:28The Caponeras open the game with a single for the Yankees and install second base.
- 1:37:35Winfield walk and with two on, Panela lined out sharply to Hoffman the shortstop.
- 1:37:40He turned it into an unassisted double play.
- 1:37:43Erasing the Caponeras.
- 1:37:45It's the left and Kemp is going to score and the Yankees will have the early lead here.
- 1:37:51So Steve Kemp scores and Andre Robertson hits the left.
- 1:37:55And the Yankees lead it one to nothing.
- 1:37:58Smalley stops at second base.
- 1:38:09Yankees now have five hits in the game and that's RBI number 14 on the year for Andre Robertson.
- 1:38:17The Yankees come up with three straight hits, all of them singles.
- 1:38:24And they have the first run in the game.
- 1:38:26They lead it one to nothing and here's Caponeras who is two for two.
- 1:38:30And the pitch, a fast ball high and wide, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:38:37Caponeras single to left in the first inning and then looked to single into right center in the third inning.
- 1:38:44Smalley at second, Robertson at first and still one out.
- 1:38:48Manningly on deck.
- 1:38:50Here's the set by Tudor pitch to Caponeras, inside ball two and two balls and no strikes.
- 1:38:58Kemp's face hit was a low liner that skipped off the glove of first baseman Dave Stapleton.
- 1:39:04Smalley's hit passed a diving Jerry Remy in the right field.
- 1:39:08And Robertson's hit on the left side passed Hoffman and Boggs inside ball three.
- 1:39:14Three balls and no strikes account to first Caponeras.
- 1:39:19Well, Tudor is in danger now of loading the bases here with only one out in the inning.
- 1:39:25Three balls, no strikes account to Caponeras.
- 1:39:30Thus far, Tudor has walked only one in the game.
- 1:39:33That was Winfield back in the first inning.
- 1:39:35Here on the pitch, that's a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:39:39And it's three balls and one strike to count.
- 1:39:43Well, the Red Sox have Bob Stanley loosening up now on the both end.
- 1:39:49Now the set.
- 1:39:50Here's the three-one delivery as Tudor looks to the runners and pitches strike two.
- 1:39:55At the liners on the outside corner and a full count now three and two.
- 1:40:05So Caponeras takes a pair of strikes and account now three balls and two strikes.
- 1:40:15Smalley, the lead runner at second.
- 1:40:16Robertson behind him at first.
- 1:40:21Ready to work.
- 1:40:22Left-hander Tudor sets and pitches.
- 1:40:26High ball bowl.
- 1:40:27That'll load the bases.
- 1:40:29Caponeras is on at first.
- 1:40:31Robertson moves to second.
- 1:40:33Smalley is on to third.
- 1:40:35And the batter is going to be Don Mattingly.
- 1:40:40And here in the bottom of the fifth, the Yankees have the lead at one to nothing.
- 1:40:44Andre Robertson's base hit the left scourge, Steve Kemp from second.
- 1:40:48And the threat continues with the bases loaded.
- 1:40:50Only one out.
- 1:40:51And the batter, Don Mattingly, is 0-2 in the game.
- 1:40:55Flying to left.
- 1:40:56Hopped up.
- 1:40:57Second baseman Remy Kottabon ends up being a double play.
- 1:41:00And the pitch.
- 1:41:01It's high.
- 1:41:02One ball and no strikes.
- 1:41:04Curveball just missed upstairs to the left-handed hitting Mattingly.
- 1:41:14One ball, no strikes.
- 1:41:16Bases loaded.
- 1:41:17Lead runner at third, Roy Smalley.
- 1:41:19Full line by Tudor.
- 1:41:21And here's the pitch.
- 1:41:22Mattingly swings and fouls it back to the upper deck.
- 1:41:26And a count at one ball and one strike.
- 1:41:31Winfield due up next.
- 1:41:41Everybody at a base for the Yankees.
- 1:41:43As Tudor works to the line and a one-one to Mattingly.
- 1:41:46The curve is in for a strike and it is now one and two.
- 1:41:51Mattingly takes the curveball and one ball, two strikes to count.
- 1:41:59Mattingly steps back in.
- 1:42:03Tudor checks the lead runner, Smalley at third.
- 1:42:05Here's the one-two delivery.
- 1:42:07Swings.
- 1:42:08Good strike three.
- 1:42:09Got him on a breaking pitch.
- 1:42:10Out of the strike zone.
- 1:42:11Mattingly is down.
- 1:42:13Strikeout number one in the game for left-hander John Tudor.
- 1:42:17And now here's the confrontation between John Tudor and Dave Winfield.
- 1:42:22As Winfield steps in.
- 1:42:30Now Winfield, three RBI's in the series, a two-run homer on Saturday night.
- 1:42:36And he picked up an RBI on a ground-down yesterday.
- 1:42:390 for 1 this afternoon.
- 1:42:41He walked in the first inning.
- 1:42:43And he flied to center fielder Tony Armas in the void.
- 1:42:46Tudor to the line and here's the pitch to Winfield.
- 1:42:48Inside a ball and one and 0.
- 1:42:52Tudor's got to be careful here.
- 1:42:55He can't afford to work too far behind Winfield.
- 1:42:58He has no place to put him.
- 1:43:03That count, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:43:04Smalley at third.
- 1:43:05Roberts at second.
- 1:43:06Kevin Harris at first.
- 1:43:08And the pitch.
- 1:43:09That's a strike.
- 1:43:10Got the ladders on the inside corner.
- 1:43:11And the count is even at one and one.
- 1:43:14Winfield, ticket.
- 1:43:23One ball, one strike.
- 1:43:24Tudor trying to work out of a jam here in the fifth.
- 1:43:26Bases loaded into Winfield.
- 1:43:28Trying to help the Yankees break the game open.
- 1:43:30They lead one to nothing.
- 1:43:31And the pitch.
- 1:43:33Strike two and it's one and two.
- 1:43:35Oh, Winfield had a cut at that fast ball.
- 1:43:40Now Tudor has the advantage.
- 1:43:41Hitter ahead of hitter at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:43:46Winfield has to be more protective of the plate.
- 1:43:53Outfield straight away for Winfield.
- 1:43:55They play him deep.
- 1:43:56And the line by Tudor.
- 1:43:57Here's the delivery.
- 1:43:58Popped it up.
- 1:43:59Foul ground.
- 1:44:00Newman coming back.
- 1:44:01He may have room.
- 1:44:02It's out of play.
- 1:44:03Seven, eight rows up in the back seats.
- 1:44:06Off to the left.
- 1:44:07Winfield is still in there at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:44:13Yankees get the first run of the game.
- 1:44:16And a base hit from Andre Robertson.
- 1:44:19Scored Steve Kemp from second.
- 1:44:28Now Winfield steps out.
- 1:44:30Then gets back in.
- 1:44:31He'll take his time.
- 1:44:36John Tudor standing tall in the mound.
- 1:44:38He's ready to work.
- 1:44:39Here's the one, two delivery.
- 1:44:40The pitch.
- 1:44:41Swing.
- 1:44:42Missed strike three.
- 1:44:43Struck him out of a fast ball.
- 1:44:44John Tudor really rears back and gets Winfield.
- 1:44:48Strikes that two and the Yankees first two in the game.
- 1:44:51At the end of five the Yankees won the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:45:01One down the other.
- 1:45:08Ninety ball out of the Little House.

- 1:46:52Don't go easy.
- 1:46:57One-foot-five celebration will continue.
- 1:47:01Well, the Yankees have the lead at one to nothing.
- 1:47:04As the Red Sox come to bat in the top half of the sixth inning,
- 1:47:07a ground ball single on the left side that just made it through
- 1:47:11past Boggs and Hoffman and into left field,
- 1:47:15scoring Kemp from second base and the game's long run thus far.
- 1:47:19Today's Martin Brothers lucky number is 493.
- 1:47:22Let me repeat the number, 493.
- 1:47:25If you are today's lucky number winner,
- 1:47:27go to your nearest Martin Brothers location with your card,
- 1:47:30and you'll receive a $50 gift certificate.
- 1:47:35David Gatti working to Jeff Duman, the lead-off batter for the Red Sox here
- 1:47:39in the top half of the sixth inning, and one to nothing, the Yankees ahead.
- 1:47:45And the first pitch to Duman is outside the ball, one ball to no strikes.
- 1:47:48Duman struck out swinging in the third, and it's 0-1 in the game.
- 1:47:51Swing and a foul, this one will reach to the upper deck,
- 1:47:54bounces off the facing and back down onto the screen,
- 1:47:58and the ball is striking out at Jeff Duman.
- 1:48:03Red Sox and Yankees won't lead again until September.
- 1:48:14On the 19th, the Yankees have a series at Boston.
- 1:48:18Here's a fly to right, Kemp is there, and he's got it for the up.
- 1:48:22And there's one down, the lead-off batter, Jeff Duman retired,
- 1:48:26and Glenn Hoffman will step in.
- 1:48:28And the Red Sox have their final appearance here at Yankee Stadium
- 1:48:32the very next week, September 27th through the 29th.
- 1:48:40All right, here's Hoffman, the number nine batter of the order,
- 1:48:42Oprah Waddy struck out his first time up,
- 1:48:44and a high fastball, it's one ball to no strikes.
- 1:48:48Dave Gatti.
- 1:48:54First eight outs, seven of them were strikeouts.
- 1:48:58And a bit of curve popped in the air,
- 1:49:00Wynand are coming back, but it'll be out of play.
- 1:49:02It's on the screen, and the count is a ball and a strike now to Hoffman.
- 1:49:15Yankees and the Red Sox, final game of the four-game series.
- 1:49:17The Yankees won the opener on Friday night, 12-8.
- 1:49:20The Sox came back with wins Saturday night and yesterday afternoon.
- 1:49:24Curve fouled to the upper deck, off to the right, out of play.
- 1:49:27And the count is one ball and two strikes to Glenn Hoffman.
- 1:49:35Yankees have a run on five hits and no airs.
- 1:49:38The Red Sox, no runs, no hits, and they've made one air.
- 1:49:41Gatti pitching here in the sixth inning, one down and nobody on.
- 1:49:46Gatti erects to the line, and here's the pitch.
- 1:49:48Chas missed with a breaking pitch on the outside corner,
- 1:49:52and it's a 2-2 count now to Glenn Hoffman.
- 1:49:57Jerry Remy, do up next.
- 1:49:59It centers eight, nine, and one on the order to face Gatti here in the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:50:04Here's the line and the 2-2 delivery.
- 1:50:06Hoffman swings, looks one in the shallow left, up play.
- 1:50:09Spaley back, and he makes a running drive.
- 1:50:12Roy Spaley running away from the infield, and into shallow left.
- 1:50:18Over the head catch to retire Hoffman, two down in the inning,
- 1:50:22and the batter is going to be Jerry Remy who is struck out and grounded to first.
- 1:50:35I see they have a rain and wind delay in Detroit now with the Tigers-Orioles game.
- 1:50:41Detroit is leading that game by a, excuse me, Baltimore is leading by a 5-4 score.
- 1:50:48Todd Cruz has hit a home run for Baltimore.
- 1:50:51He's helped them since coming over from Seattle.
- 1:50:54Strike one to count to Remy, and here's the pitch.
- 1:50:56A slider outside, and it is one and one.
- 1:51:00Gatti has not pitched many sliders this afternoon.
- 1:51:02It's been mostly fastball and curveball,
- 1:51:05and he was using the curveball very effectively in the early innings.
- 1:51:08He's struck out Evans and Hoffman on excellent breaking pitches, real good curveballs.
- 1:51:14Here's the one-one delivery swing, and it's a high fastball.
- 1:51:17Remy went after a pitch out of the strikes zone,
- 1:51:21but that's been a very typical Raggetty pitch here today.
- 1:51:25That one really fired in there by Raggetty.
- 1:51:28He's had some kind of fastball this afternoon.
- 1:51:31So it's one-two to count to Remy, two down, nobody on.
- 1:51:34The Red Sox batting here in the sixth inning, trailing one to nothing.
- 1:51:37Remy swings and fouls a fastball to the upper deck off to the left,
- 1:51:40and it'll be a ball and two strikes still to the left-handed hitter.
- 1:51:46Winfield in center field is not playing Remy as pronounced as Mumfrey has been
- 1:51:52in earlier games of this series.
- 1:51:54Davis shaded toward left center.
- 1:51:56Here's a swing and a high pop to the shortstop.
- 1:51:59Third baseman Campanera is waving off smally now.
- 1:52:01It can't be mixed to grab.
- 1:52:03In the cut of the infield, that's going to be all for Remy,
- 1:52:06and the Sox here in the sixth inning.
- 1:52:08No runs, no hits, no errors, and nobody left.
- 1:52:11Raggetty now in the four of the six innings that he's pitched,
- 1:52:14retiring the side in order.
- 1:52:16At the end of five and a half, the Yankees won and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:52:19Over the years, more fans have taken themselves out to New York Yankee ballgames than to those of any other team in the history of baseball.
- 1:52:36Why such interest in one team?
- 1:52:38Maybe it's because that interest has been paid back with such a huge dividend.
- 1:52:42In the past 62 years, the Yankees have won more than half the American League pennants
- 1:52:48of the World Series play, which just proves the old adage.
- 1:52:52If you give the folks what they want, they'll keep coming back.

- 1:53:52The Yankees are holding a 1-0 lead.
- 1:54:07The Play-Doh batter will be Lou Benalla.
- 1:54:22The Play-Doh batter is Benalla Better.
- 1:54:39All right, here's Benalla leading it up.
- 1:54:41Now as the Yankees come to bat, this being the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:54:51Benalla was out on a line drive his first time up and then flying to left.
- 1:54:56Deep play ball and race car to the warning track.
- 1:54:59Second time up in the fourth inning.
- 1:55:01Oh, for two in the game.
- 1:55:02Benalla had an opportunity and a low-liner right up the middle and Huffman made a very good play.
- 1:55:08He moved to his left corner and then doubled off Campaneras at second base.
- 1:55:12Benalla's play, a high fly, deep center field, back, back, back.
- 1:55:18Warning track and deep center.
- 1:55:21The ball is normally contact there, Bill.
- 1:55:23Yeah, Armaz gets a good jump on the ball or some of the questions as to whether or not he might be able to play center field.
- 1:55:29He certainly is not embarrassed himself.
- 1:55:31He's done an excellent job in his service.
- 1:55:35So, Lou Benalla takes Tony Armaz to the warning track and dead-away center.
- 1:55:39Hits the ball over 400 feet.
- 1:55:41But it's nothing more than a long out here at Yankee Stadium and there's one away.
- 1:55:47Don Baylor who is 0 for 2 flying to left, flying to center and the pitch down low and one ball, no strikes.
- 1:55:53Yankees have five hits in the game, two for Campaneras.
- 1:55:56And then they had consecutive singles by Kep, Smalley, and Robertson.
- 1:56:00That produced the game's long run in the fifth inning.
- 1:56:03Baylor swings, fouls a fastball to the upper deck, and it's a two-strike count now.
- 1:56:12Don Baylor.
- 1:56:18Following Baylor will be Butch Weininger.
- 1:56:22Here's the pitch.
- 1:56:24High blast, deep left field, way back, way back.
- 1:56:28Touch of all, Don Baylor.
- 1:56:32Ball run number nine on the air for Baylor. To the left field seats, Yankees lead it by a 2-0 score.
- 1:56:46That's a steady runner for Don Baylor.
- 1:56:50Yankees sixth ball run of this series.
- 1:56:58And a 2-0 lead.
- 1:57:02Got a fastball and lined it into the left field seats.
- 1:57:06Banner now is Weininger, and the pitch to him is a strike on the outside gunner, and it's no balls and one strike.
- 1:57:15Red Sox have nine homers in the series. They are homerless, thus far today.
- 1:57:23A ball and a strike to count to Weininger.
- 1:57:26Butch Batting and 0 for 2 in the game, reached it in the air, and popped to the second baseman, Remy.
- 1:57:32Down low, 2-1 to count.
- 1:57:38Six hits in the game for the Yankees now.
- 1:57:44And the pitch, that's high, 3-1.
- 1:57:51Yankees now have 80 home runs, they're playing in their 76th game today.
- 1:57:57And they've hit 40 at home and 40 on the road.
- 1:57:59By the left, it's back and it's deep. Rice is right at the wall to make some ground.
- 1:58:03Good catch.
- 1:58:06I don't know if he took a home run away from Weininger or not, but he made a good grab.
- 1:58:09He did make a good catch. He went back to the wall and leaped and caught it.
- 1:58:12It would have been high off the wall.
- 1:58:15Rice probably plays deep in the left field as you'll find here at this ballpark.
- 1:58:27He will not allow anything over his head to be out of the ballpark.
- 1:58:32And Bob Stanley gets up and starts throwing again in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 1:58:38Right here is Steve Kemp. Kemp swings in the first pitch and hits one on one hop to stable.
- 1:58:43And then he knocks it down and then flips to the Richard Tudor covering for the out of the inning.
- 1:58:48It's over. That's going to be all now for the Yankees here in the sixth inning.
- 1:58:51They get a run out and a hit and a hummer by Baylor.
- 1:58:53No errors and nobody laughed at it.
- 1:58:55At the end of sixth hole, the Yankees lead the Red Sox 2-0.
- 1:58:59The Yankees lead the Yankees to the second half of the game.

- 3:01:13New York Talks to Owen Spann, 10 to noon, here on Talk Radio 77.
- 3:01:20W-A-B-C, New York!
- 3:01:23Well, what more can be said? A no-hitter pitched by Dave Rigetti.
- 3:01:27Here on this 4th of July afternoon, temperature on the playing field had to be over 100 degrees.
- 3:01:32The official temperature at game time was 94,
- 3:01:35and out there with the sun beating down and the humidity,
- 3:01:39Dave Rigetti made history for himself and the New York Yankees.
- 3:01:43And what a birthday present for Yankee owner George Steinbrenner,
- 3:01:47whom we hope was listening to our ball game this afternoon on this, his birthday,
- 3:01:53as well as the birthday of this great country of ours.
- 3:01:56Dave Rigetti, 4 walks, 9 strikeouts, and no hits, no runs by the Boston Red Sox.
- 3:02:04The Yankees, 4 runs, 8 hits, no errors, 7 men left on base.
- 3:02:08Don Baylor hit his 9th home run of the year for run number 2 for the Yankees.
- 3:02:12And the Red Sox, no runs, no hits, 1 error, and 2 men left on base.
- 3:02:18You know, sort of just thinking myself, this is the 3rd no-hitter I've seen.
- 3:02:25One pitched by Al Downing in the minor leagues,
- 3:02:29one pitched by Steve Barber and Stu Miller at Baltimore,
- 3:02:33and they lost the ball game 2-1.
- 3:02:36But this afternoon, a perfect effort by, not a perfect game,
- 3:02:41a great effort by Dave Rigetti, 4 walks, 9 strikeouts, and a no-hitter.
- 3:02:46His record now for the year, 10 wins and 3 losses, John Tudor the loser, 5-5.

- 3:04:05Stay tuned, please, for the Yankees' wrap-up, dugout, and scoreboard shows.
- 3:04:11I'm gonna make it anywhere. It's up to you. New York, New York, New York.
- 3:04:36You there, young lady. Have I come to the correct location?
- 3:04:41Is this one of those Rockwell salvage stores I hear so much about?
- 3:04:44Yes, it is, sir. Gee, is that your Rolls Royce out there?
- 3:04:47Yes, of course. Look here, I'm a very busy man.
- 3:04:49Please direct me to the sales items I've heard about that are 40 to 70 percent off the regular retail price.
- 3:04:54But sir, all of Rockwell's items are always 40 to 70 percent off.
- 3:04:58You see, Rockwell buys job lots, surplus, and seconds in such volume, they're able to pass the savings on to the customer.
- 3:05:04You mean all this houseware, glassware, hardware, and auto supplies are always this inexpensive?
- 3:05:09That's right, sir. Rockwell has everything for inside and outside your home.
- 3:05:13Excellent, my dear. I say, what a lucky find. The scooter will help me get around my mansion.
- 3:05:18Hey, if you're so wealthy, why shop at Rockwell?
- 3:05:21Because I wish to stay wealthy, my dear.
- 3:05:24Rockwell salvage in Queens on Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn on McDonald Avenue, in Lyndon, New Jersey on Route 1 and 9,
- 3:05:30and in East Brunswick, New Jersey on Route 18 and Hillsdale Road. Plenty of free parking and all stores are open seven days a week.
- 3:05:36Rockwell salvage, waiting in the rich shop.
- 3:05:39Music.
- 3:06:04Good afternoon once again, everybody. I'm Frank Messer with John Gordon at Yankee Stadium as we wrap up a no-hit pitching performance by Yankee left-hander Dave Rigetti.
- 3:06:14Rigetti, no-hitting the Red Sox. He walked four, he struck out nine.
- 3:06:19The last no-hitter pitched by a Yankee pitcher was the perfect game pitched by Don Larson.
- 3:06:27That was the fifth game of the 1956 World Series. It happened on October 8th. That was the only perfect game in World Series history.
- 3:06:36And that was the last no-hitter pitched by a Yankee pitcher until this afternoon.
- 3:06:42And I have to credit my wife, Rebecca, with this phone call just to the booth a few moments ago, saying that, of course, Dave Rigetti wears number 19.
- 3:06:54And so did Don Larson.
- 3:07:00The last regular season no-hitter pitched by a Yankee was Allie Reynolds against the Boston Red Sox, September 28th, the first game of a doubleheader.
- 3:07:10In fact, in 1951, Allie Reynolds pitched two no-hitters, one against Cleveland on July 12th and the one against the Boston Red Sox on September 28th.
- 3:07:21We're going to go back and listen to some of the highlights on this afternoon's game right now, and we start in the fifth inning.
- 3:07:30It was a scoreless ball game, one out. Weininger popped to the second baseman. Then Kemp had an infield hit, moved up on a base hit to right field by Roy Smalley, and the batter is Andre Robertson.
- 3:07:41It's the left, and Kemp is going to score, and the Yankees will have the early lead here. So, Steve Kemp scores on an Andre Robertson hit to left, and the Yankees lead it 1-0.
- 3:07:54Yes, the Yankees had a 1-0 lead. It was 1-0 when we went to the bottom half of the sixth inning. Lou Pennella flied to center field, one out, and with John Tudor pitching for the Boston Red Sox, the batter is Don Baylor.
- 3:08:07A nice blast, deep left field, way back, way back. Touch of all, Don Baylor.
- 3:08:16Home run number nine on the air for Baylor. To the left field seats, and the Yankees lead it by a 2-0 score.
- 3:08:23Yes, 2-0, John Gordon, and now the bottom half of the eighth inning. Don Manningly popped to the shortstop.
- 3:08:28Dave Winfield had an infield hit. Pennella fouled out to the catcher play on which played umpire Steve Palermo was quite shaken up, but would not leave the ballgame.
- 3:08:37Winfield at first, Winfield went from first to second on the catch of that foul pop-up by catcher Jeff Newman.
- 3:08:45That dictated an intentional walk to Don Baylor with first base open. An unintentional walk to Butch Weineger loaded the bases, and the batter is Steve Kemp.
- 3:08:57Here's the first pitch to Kemp. Line base hit will go in the corner right field. Winfield scores easily. Baylor will score.
- 3:09:06And Weineger will hold at third base. The Yankees now lead 4-0.
- 3:09:10And of course there is another big highlight we have on tape of this ballgame. We're going to save it for just a little bit later on.
- 3:09:17I'll be back with more of the wrap-up after these messages.
- 3:09:21I've got a great family and a great job. I can't afford to waste my time shopping for bargains.
- 3:09:28In most cases what seems like the best offer always has some strings attached. Same thing with banks and these new money market accounts.
- 3:09:36I knew my family needed one, but where? I turned to the Lincoln Savings Bank. No fanfare, no confusion.
- 3:09:44They gave me just what I needed. A darn good rate, old reliable FDIC insurance, and a great feeling of satisfaction.
- 3:09:52With a family of four, you never can predict when you need some extra cash to solve a crisis or seize an opportunity.
- 3:09:59Lincoln's daily market account keeps our money available to us without penalty. It gives us total access to our money whenever we need it, as often as we need it.
- 3:10:08To a family that's always on the run, Lincoln is always there. If you don't have time to waste in the money market maze, call the Lincoln at 263-8000.
- 3:10:18That's the Lincoln Savings Bank member FDIC.
- 3:10:21Mel Allen and Dick Cavett for Apple Computer.
- 3:10:24Mel, who's baseball's most versatile player?
- 3:10:27You could say Bert Campanaris. He once played all nine positions in a single game.
- 3:10:32Wow.
- 3:10:33Well, who's your pick, Dick?
- 3:10:34I'd say the remarkable Apple IIe personal computer.
- 3:10:38How's that?
- 3:10:39Well, it's now playing for several major league teams at the same time, helping to raise RBIs and lower ERAs.
- 3:10:46The IIe's a big hit in other fields, too, and at home. It's got more software, more applications for the home than any other personal computer.
- 3:10:54And right now, the Apple IIe is priced at a steal.
- 3:10:57Well, how about that? Say, Dick, how about a Bert Campanaris autographed baseball for an Apple IIe?
- 3:11:03No.
- 3:11:05See your authorized Apple dealer at Transnet Corporation, Route 22 Union, and the Computer Center, Chestnut Ridge Road in Montvale.
- 3:11:17Frito-Lay is contributing to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Fund in the name of the New York Yankees.
- 3:11:23Fifty dollars for each run the Yankees score this year.
- 3:11:25With the four runs the Yankees scored this afternoon, $200 will be contributed to the fund.
- 3:11:30The grand total now is $88,500.
- 3:11:36And now, the New York Yankees Dugout Show is sponsored by Sergio Valenti Jeans for the natural selection.
- 3:11:44We've turned things around a little bit this afternoon because John Gordon has already been in the dugout to chat with Dave Rigetti immediately following the ball game.
- 3:11:52And, John, he had so much emotion was coming out just in his words, and you were just right there next to him.
- 3:11:59It was really amazing. Halfway between a sentence he just kind of paused and went, whoo!
- 3:12:04Yeah.
- 3:12:05And I think that exemplifies the way that he was feeling and how long it's going to take for him to wind down.
- 3:12:12I did happen to go into locker room afterwards. I wanted to see Butch Weineger, the first no-hitter that Butch Weineger has ever caught in the big leagues.
- 3:12:19And as thrilled as Dave Rigetti is, Butch Weineger is feeling the same emotion right along with him.
- 3:12:25And Butch was talking about the last out of the game, the strikeout of Boggs, and just saying how much he wanted to see Boggs strike out.
- 3:12:34He said, I was just hoping that he would strike out.
- 3:12:37All right. Now, the highlight that we save back for this portion of our broadcast. Let's go back and listen.
- 3:12:46The Yankees lead 4-0. Glenn Hoffman is at second base, two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
- 3:12:54And Dave Rigetti on the threshold of making history here at Yankee Stadium.
- 3:13:05He sets the kick and the pitch. He's struck him out!
- 3:13:09Rigetti has pitched a no-hitter!
- 3:13:12Dave Rigetti has pitched a no-hitter!
- 3:13:15He strikes out Boggs for the final out of the ball game.
- 3:13:19And the Yankees pour on the field to congratulate Dave Rigetti.
- 3:13:25Well, that was quite a moment, John Gordon, just watching the entire team charge on the field.
- 3:13:31As Rigetti told you, he thought Weineger was going to crush him, I guess, if he put a bear hug around him.
- 3:13:36And a beautiful call by you, too, Frank. Nice going.
- 3:13:38But, you know, it's something that Weineger should mention that to a number of reporters and media people that were gathered around him downstairs about wanting to strike out Boggs.
- 3:13:48Of course, the leading hit man in the major leagues, and he's facing Rigetti in the absolute confrontation of confrontations in the top of the ninth inning and the no-hit bid.
- 3:13:59I also had a chance to chat with Sammy Ellis just a little bit.
- 3:14:01And Sammy Ellis has been the man, of course, who has tutored Dave Rigetti ever since the start of Rigetti's New York Yankee career at Columbus in New York, back down to Columbus again, back to New York, back down to Columbus and everything.
- 3:14:14Sammy Ellis said, you know, it's amazing the way that this man has come of age now as a major league pitcher to watch him pitch today.
- 3:14:22And this is, as Sammy said, kind of like it's fitting that he should pitch a no-hitter here at Yankee Stadium because he deserves it so much with the great pitching talent that he has.
- 3:14:33Well, wasn't it just last year that Rigetti was sent back down to Columbus to work under Sammy Ellis?
- 3:14:38Yes, it was.
- 3:14:39Much to Dave's disappointment, I'm sure, at that time, but in the long run, everything's really paid off for him.
- 3:14:45Yeah, it really has.
- 3:14:46And I just mentioned one other quick thing.
- 3:14:48The people that are around Dave Rigetti right now, the television cameras, the radio reporters, the newspaper men, they're just huddling around him, walking back upstairs.
- 3:14:56And a youngster mentioned to me, he said, you know, it's going to take Rigetti some two hours before he gets a shower, before he gets a chance to clean up a little bit and leave Yankee Stadium because that's what it's all about as far as the opportunity.
- 3:15:08And pitching a no-hitter and talking to the people down in the locker room, the press corps, the media corps, and he's just being swamped right now.
- 3:15:14Oh, I'm sure he is, but I'm sure he's handling it very well.
- 3:15:17Dave Rigetti, just 24 years of age, should have a great career in front of him.
- 3:15:21And I remember when the Yankees traded for Dave Rigetti.
- 3:15:26We'll just mention the people in the trade, Mike Griffin, Paul Mirabello, Juan Beníquez, and Greg Jemison came to the Yankees for pitchers Sparky Lyle, Larry McCall, and Dave Racich.
- 3:15:41Catcher Mike Heath, shortstop Domingo Ramos.
- 3:15:44There was also cash involved that trade made in November 1978.
- 3:15:48But as I recall, the trade, the Yankees refused to make the trade unless Rigetti was part of it.
- 3:15:54George Steinbrenner insisted on Rigetti, the entire front office insisted that Rigetti be included in that trade.
- 3:16:01And that was the start of his Yankees career coming here from the Texas Rangers.
- 3:16:05A number of bottles of champagne are being delivered to the Yankee clubhouse right now.
- 3:16:09And they're going to Dave Rigetti, Butch Weineger, and the rest of the Yankees for what has been just a great moment in baseball history here at Yankee Stadium today.
- 3:16:17I imagine that Mr. Steinbrenner's champagne bill will sort of skyrocket.
- 3:16:22I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankee owner didn't have champagne there for everybody in those huge, huge magnum bottles.
- 3:16:29That's exactly right. Listen, you and Rebecca and the family have a real good Fourth of July.
- 3:16:33I look forward to seeing you when the Yankees open the road trip at Kansas City.
- 3:16:36Okay, the same to you and Nancy and Gordy and Gene. Have fun.
- 3:16:40Thanks, Frank. Everybody else too.
- 3:16:41Thank you. As most valuable player of this afternoon's game, Dave Rigetti will receive a gift from the Sergio Valenti catalog.

- 3:18:43Well, with the Yankees winning this afternoon, Toronto plays later, so the Yankees are two games at the moment behind the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 3:18:51Baltimore and Detroit were rained out, so the Yankees pull into a tie with Detroit for third place as both the Yankees and the Tigers now trail Toronto by two.
- 3:19:01Baltimore is a game out. Let's take a look at games that were played this afternoon in the American League.
- 3:19:08The Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 12-6. There were 29 hits in the ball game at the Dome in Minnesota.
- 3:19:16But only two home runs. Greg Walker hit his sixth for Chicago. Rusty Koontz his second for Minnesota.
- 3:19:22Chicago 12-6 over the Twins. Dennis Lamp the winner 5-5. And Jeff Lysander the loser 2-7.
- 3:19:29Baltimore and Detroit got four innings in with Baltimore leading 5-4 at the end of four.
- 3:19:36Wind and rain delay and it just never let up, so they postponed that game in Detroit.
- 3:19:44The rest of the American League action will be tonight. Seattle at Toronto, Milwaukee at Cleveland, Kansas City at California, and Texas at Oakland.

- 3:21:04Finals, that is. The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals played a doubleheader and as so often happens, they split.
- 3:21:11The Pirates won the first game 7-2. 12 hits for Pittsburgh, 9 hits for St. Louis. Rick Roden went the distance. For his sixth win of the year, he has lost seven.
- 3:21:20Jason Thompson had the game's only home run, his 11th.
- 3:21:25Pirates winning the first game 7-2, the Cardinals came back with a vengeance in the nightcap, winning 11-4. A grand slam home run by Darrell Porter highlighted the ball game for the Cardinals.
- 3:21:36Neil Allen went the distance to pick up the win. He's 5-8. Jim Bibby took the loss. He's 3-9. The Cardinals had 18 hits in the nightcap, so they split. Pittsburgh 7-2 in the opener. The Cardinals 11-4 in the nightcap.
- 3:21:50Montreal to Chicago for a doubleheader. The Expos won the first game 6-3. They got off with three runs in the very first inning.
- 3:21:58As Andre Dawson and Gary Carter homered, Dawson hit his second home run of the game and 17th of the season in the third. And Montreal beat the Cubs 6-3.
- 3:22:08Steve Rogers the winner, 12-3. And Dick Ruth from the loser, 5-6.
- 3:22:13The second game is now in the fourth inning. Montreal leads by a score of 2-0, Scott Sanderson opposing Ferguson Jenkins.
- 3:22:20Cincinnati plays in Atlanta tonight, and Los Angeles will be at Houston, and the San Francisco Giants at San Diego in night games.
- 3:22:29Here at Yankee Stadium on this 4th of July, 1983, Dave Rigetti made history. He pitched a no-hitter, the first no-hitter by a Yankee pitcher since Don Larson's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.
- 3:22:41The Yankees beat the Red Sox 4-0, gaining a split in their four-game series. A crowd of 41,077 on hand for the Classic.

- 3:23:10The losing pitcher, John Tudor, his record five and five. Congratulations, Dave Rigetti.
