- 1:21dot net. Now it's time for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
- 1:26The original internate is April sixteenth and nineteen forty nine, and the title
- 1:32is heat Wave. It was hot and still and August night in the middle
- 1:38of April, but that didn't matter to the strip teas Dancer and the Golden
- 1:42Mask, because murder made her blood run cold. The night the heat Waves
- 1:46struck. From the pen of Raymond Chandler, out sending, author of crime
- 1:49fiction, comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Phillip Marlowe now with
- 2:06Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story. The
- 2:10heat Wave Ring was only three weeks old, but the sun going down on
- 2:27Los Angeles with the middle of the summer vengeance. At noon it was one
- 2:30hundred and two in the shade, and by three point thirty with doors,
- 2:34window and shirt color all open as far as they would go, I still
- 2:38swallowed in the kind of heat that whilts both your clothes and your character.
- 2:42So I tried to make sense from the crisp words of a telegram I just
- 2:45received from one Karen Driscoll Junior no Less of knob Hill, San Francisco.
- 2:50It told me to go to the Palace Theater or a burlesque house on Main
- 2:53Street, watch the performance of the featured dancer, get backstage and take a
- 2:57close look at her face. Then meet the seven o'clock plane from San Francisco
- 3:00and report what I'd seen the Miss Drisco Junior. It was a strange request
- 3:06coming from nob Hill, but the enclosed fifty dollar money order wasn't kidding,
- 3:09So I perspired my way down to the Palace Theater. There Instead of the
- 3:14usual thirty beautiful girls thirty sign over the Marquis was a fifty foot gold banner
- 3:19that screamed the heat wave, who is she? And the showcase cause that
- 3:23led to the box office were all a circle of question marks that scented a
- 3:25woman wearing a strange gold mask and little else. I bought a ticket and
- 3:30went inside in time for the tail end of the matinee. A baggy pants
- 3:35comedian was just winding up a corny South of the Border routine as I sat
- 3:38down. Sight Ah, but there was Manuel, my brother manual labor.
- 3:46He was the laziest man in old Mago. Yeah, until he got a
- 3:52job shooting polls for the government. Is sure. The eight hundred pool today
- 3:59that made even the thing is bullshooter, I comic kicked the crown out of
- 4:06an oversized sombrero in a hybrid headbance, then galloped off into the wings.
- 4:12After reminding myself that I was here on business, I sat down again as
- 4:15a personality boy and brown flannel and a yellow shirt stepped into the spotlight at
- 4:18his arms raised. Ladies and gentlemen, you now previich to witness one of
- 4:25the most unusual and fred pegen'spects ever presented on any state. For the moment,
- 4:30you will see her, the woman of Mystery, performing exotic rights to
- 4:34the Peyton Sun, god of the incas exactly as they were performed three thousand
- 4:40years ago in the Strange Temple lovely Andy. But who is she? Who
- 4:45is this woman? And who knows what secrets lie behind her mask? Of
- 4:48hole? The Palace theater resents the mass, marvelous, the beautiful, but
- 4:55dazzling, not mysterious Pete Way Oh, I had to admit it. This
- 5:05was special. She was the color of alabaster and as supple as a cat,
- 5:10and as she moved across the stage she got more convolutions out of her
- 5:13two arms than a wrestless octopust could with eight. A costume from the neck
- 5:16down was about as sheer as a new spider whip, and above that,
- 5:20and covering her face completely, was a gold mask. Grotesque and listening as
- 5:26the dance headed for a climax design to knocked the cash customers right out of
- 5:29their seats, I reminded myself again that I was here on business. So
- 5:33I walked down the side aisle to a door that led backstage. I went
- 5:36through it just as the dance ended, and while the audience saw the house
- 5:41down begging for more, the heat wave tossed a couple of kisses through a
- 5:44gold mask rando ad dressing room. I started after her and was halfway there
- 5:47when a bulging hulk and a sharkskin soup that measured six six in every direction
- 5:54blumbered casually out of the shadows and took a bulldog's stance with his back against
- 5:57the dressing room door. I started picking up fast ad libs and was hot
- 6:00for a switch, and the eagle reporter gag when the baggy pants coming slid
- 6:04up beside me. Hey, chump, all right, they're asking for low
- 6:09to mayhem if you try to get to the heat wave past Jesse there,
- 6:12Jesse he the man mountain in the sharkskin suit. Yeah, the the orders
- 6:15to break bone. No, maybe I can help you good, but how
- 6:19come, Yeah, let's go round to the side your reporter, right,
- 6:26Yeah, well, iky bonds can use a little publicly too, you know,
- 6:30holy here by the door. Now, whether it is you have to
- 6:34know, well, all I wants one look at that face. I said
- 6:39to help you out, and I will like this right out there in the
- 6:45alley and don't come back before midnight. You can see a face then once
- 6:47you take the mask off. I should have known better, but all I
- 6:55wanted at the moment was to kick the slack out of a pair of baggy
- 6:57pants. So I bounced back up the stair, jerked the door open,
- 7:00and ran head on at the three square yards of sharkskin suit. It was
- 7:04Jesse, you ain't welcome around here, bum, so stay out. Have
- 7:10you got it? Okay, Jesse, let's say I've got it? Yeah,
- 7:14Also, don't drop it as you walk away. I was glad to
- 7:23remember that I had a client made at the airport, so in spite of
- 7:26the fact that the heat waves face was still a well kept secret behind a
- 7:29gold mask, I took Jesse's good advice and left fight eleven from the door,
- 7:41riding against four. But doctor Robert Riemer pleased reported the information that when
- 7:46I playing Taxi to Do was stopped at the airlines gate at the seven o'clock
- 7:49shop because the passengers unloaded a tall, sinuous brunette with archs eyebrows an imperial
- 7:55gesture, and I had it had kept some imaginative milliner out of the red
- 7:59for several months it's had to be miss Karen Driscoll, Junior. I introduced
- 8:03myself. I shouled it to the cocktail lounge, and when a Gibson sparkled
- 8:07in front of each of us, she got down to business. Well,
- 8:09Marlow, did you see her? Eh? Yes, and no, I
- 8:13have a photograph here. Look is this the same girl? Oh? Oh,
- 8:18it's a head shot. It's pretty, but no help, miss Triscoll.
- 8:20You didn't see her face? Then? No, look, Junior,
- 8:22do I refund your money? Now I start asking questions. Don't be ridiculous.
- 8:26I must know who that girl is, and I'll tell you why.
- 8:30This picture is of my sister, Midge Drisco. Oh, I think your
- 8:33sister's the heat wive. Yes, she's doing it to humiliate me, Marlow.
- 8:37Tomorrow, I'm being married to a man whose family is distinguished and diplomatic
- 8:41circle now, and this burlesque heat wave woman is is to be revealed at
- 8:45midnight tonight. If she is my sister? Can you imagine what the papers
- 8:50will do with that story tomorrow morning? Yeah, some wedding present, But
- 8:54your own sister, I don't get it. What? Oh? No,
- 8:56old hate Marlow. Midge lost a love of her and I wonted. Though
- 9:00she's never gotten over it, and she's done things before the day I was
- 9:03elected president of the Metropolitan Club, she faked an elopement with my chauffeur.
- 9:07The night of my engagement party, she rode a horse into the Flamingo room,
- 9:11brawl started, and she spent the night in Jau last year. I
- 9:15mean, but this heat Wave's got a lot of talent for burlesque, a
- 9:18lot of experience in a line. In fact, she's a sensation. Let's
- 9:22face it. What makes you think it's me? Joh, hush, oh
- 9:26no. I found the name Tracy Leake in her apartment in San Francisco.
- 9:31He's the manager of the Palace Theater here. I learned that from a newspaper
- 9:35story in which Josh Freeman. Josh Freeman, he is the big producer.
- 9:39He's supposed to be bargaining with Lake for his heat wave discovery. Oh,
- 9:43she's done a thorough advanced publicity job. All right. What if she turns
- 9:46out to be her sister? What then? That's my business. I know
- 9:50how to make money. Talk Marlow, and I've more than enough for a
- 9:52polite but firm conversation. Your job is merely to find out for sure between
- 9:58now and midnight, if my sister actually is this heat wave, I'll take
- 10:03care of everything else. Karen Driscoll Junior gave me her local phone number,
- 10:11then got up, cursed the hot night, bid me her in some of
- 10:15the taxi all with a regal wave one hand, and I was left to
- 10:20my own devices in something less than five hours to make them work in so,
- 10:22I drove back to the Palaestato, which was talling until midnight by showing
- 10:26a triple feature movie, paid another admission, and slipped backstage again. Was
- 10:31deserted except the two electricians tied up in pinacle under the switchboard life the heat
- 10:35waves dressing room was locked. Jesse was nowhere in sight, and I was
- 10:39about to leave again when I heard a familiar voice cooling into a dark knock
- 10:43that turned out to be a phone booth. It was Hinky Bonds the bagging
- 10:46pants coming Beauty did it beautiful? You know? A listen baby? Like
- 10:54another deal to talk to her? She won't you? Sure? Yeah?
- 11:01Yeah, well, look I gotta talk to you. How about dinner?
- 11:05Can Well? I know you got things on your mind, but yeah,
- 11:09honey, I know you're tired. Well, okay, don't worry. Thing's
- 11:16going to be okay, you'll see bye bye baby. Hey, Yinky,
- 11:22Oh you're again. Yeah, that's right. That brings us up to date,
- 11:26even Stephen. I get this first, I'm not a reporter. Second,
- 11:30I represent Josh Freeman's office some third, I haven't got all night.
- 11:33You mean Josh Freeman, the big producer, any other Josh Freeman. I
- 11:39want to talk to Tracy Lake about the heat wave, but I want to
- 11:41see her before I talk. Is she here? No, she won't be
- 11:43back until the big midnight show. Where's Tracy? Then he's home at the
- 11:48top of house on a wheelshir about two blocks down from Martha Murray's. David
- 11:52Listen, tell me something is just going to make a start out of her
- 11:56with a talent like hers. What do you think ny? I left Tinky
- 12:05with his mouth hanging open in the fire of ambition, burning like an alcohol
- 12:07lamp in each eyes. I drove out to the top of house on wheelchair,
- 12:11leaning on the bell at Tracy Lake's apartment. I got ready to be
- 12:13a hard hitting, practical minded producers right hand man. Yeah, what is
- 12:18it, Tracy? My name's Marlow out of Josh Freeman's office caught the heat
- 12:20wave exactly this afternoon, willing to wrap her up and take her home right
- 12:22now, but not sight unseen. Wait a minute, huh you see it
- 12:26from Joyce Freeman malone. That's right, and I got a blank check right
- 12:30here in my pocket, authorized to fill it out unless you're completely unreasonable,
- 12:33I say, Oh, now, look, Malo, this heatwave thing is
- 12:37going over one thousand percent better than any of us expect. I know,
- 12:39I know, but you see price is high already in the bit it only
- 12:43started to come in. Oh excuse me, I just opened the bottle afar
- 12:46my saw for that. Help yourself my lobby right back, perfectly good telephone
- 12:54sat within an arm's reach of lake. But instead he went down the hall
- 12:58of an extension and closed the door behind him. It was distinctly malpractice.
- 13:01For time was running out on me, so I picked up the phone and
- 13:03listened. Is mister Richley the judor Oh yes, what is it? Richley?
- 13:09The bracelet you selected is ready now we can deliver it immediately. Go
- 13:13to miss need or close a card. Don't worry, darling, you're my
- 13:20real heat wave. Time it Tracy lovely lovely and the engagement ring at the
- 13:26sun boots. Yeah, that's what mister bar too, But deliver that to
- 13:28the theater at midnight. Got I thank you and congratulations Tracy Lake and needle
- 13:37Var. Who might she be? Alright, my little personal business now you
- 13:43were saying, yeah, yeah, I was saying, I can hand you
- 13:45a nice fact check if this mass marvelous is really okay. You're building up
- 13:48to quite a surprise, Tracy. You must have something, Yea. Indeed,
- 13:52I have old boy Lendy. I can't reveal the lady's name until midnight,
- 13:56all right, play coroy. What's her background? And she got class
- 14:00Milo, you wouldn't believe it. Not blue book stuff, society girl in
- 14:03burlesque. Anything's possible, Malo. Sure, sure she could even be from
- 14:07nob Hill. Huh eh, Like I said, anything's possible. Sure,
- 14:13okay, Tracy, that's what I wanted to find out. See after the
- 14:15unveiling, and you got a great night for it. Oh, Malo.
- 14:18I suppose big Get Peters is in on the deal as usual along with Josh.
- 14:22Yeah, it's a regular Josh Freeman deal, just as usual. See
- 14:26you later, Tracy. Hello, this is Marlow Jr. I just wound
- 14:41up an interview with Tracy Lake when I threw nob he'll let me turn green.
- 14:46It's not official yet. The odds are high that it's your sister Midjell
- 14:48right, who was knocking him dead as the heat wave. I knew it
- 14:52a horrible little triumph. What else did you find out where she is?
- 14:56Yeah? Yeah, she's going under the name of Needle LeVar and staying at
- 15:00forty four edged with Terrace Nary MacArthur Park. But listen, it's not positive
- 15:03yet, so I'm going there to check right now. Where are you calling
- 15:05from the phone booth at the closed gas station out here on Wheelshire? But
- 15:09I, oh, what what is it? Marlow? I am about to
- 15:16start earning that fee of yours baby, three hundred pounds of muscle in the
- 15:20shotskin suit, just walked up. Goodbye, Hello, Sonny. Well my
- 15:28pilldown, pal. So the boss was right. You're just a cheap,
- 15:31nosy reporter. After all. It's Crampton there, ain't it. But you're
- 15:37not getting out bub Now wait a minute, Jesse, it's a hot night.
- 15:41Let's not work up a sweat. Don't you worry about that? Mister
- 15:43Lake pegged you as a phony. Nosy, and that's bad. What do
- 15:48you mean phony? You said Big Ed Peters was in on a deal with
- 15:50Josh Freeman. All right, what about it? Big Ed's been dead for
- 15:54twelve years. You know what, He's still going to look better than you
- 15:58are. A thirty second from now, in just a moment, the second
- 16:15act of Philip marlow But first tomorrow night, in order of their appearance,
- 16:18you'll hear Joseph Cotton, Ozzy and Harriet, Jack Benny and his gang,
- 16:22Amos and Andy, sam Spade, Lumon Abner, Helen Hayes, Eve Varden,
- 16:26and Hold Tight. Now a special show with Bing Crosby, Bob Hope,
- 16:30Claudette Colbert and Daymer over most of these same CBS network stations, and
- 16:36Jack Benny with Mary Phil Dennis, Donn Rochester will be heard over them all.
- 16:42Now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of
- 16:45Philip Marlowe and tonight's story the heat Wave. When the little man in big
- 17:02iron boots were kicking at the lining of my temples finally quit and I dragged
- 17:07myself back up to the vertical. Gargantua was gone, and I was sure
- 17:11of only two things Tracy Lake did not know that I was anything other than
- 17:17a nosy reporter. And second, and more important, it was time for
- 17:19me to head for Edgewood Terrace and the lady known as Nita LeVar As.
- 17:30I started for the front door of number forty four, which was an all
- 17:33alone stucco on the tile, ill shaped that showed a single light. The
- 17:38little men in iron boots was to work again. It reminded me that it
- 17:42might be healthier if I first found out exactly what was waiting behind the mat
- 17:47mark weapon. So I made a wise circle around the back, then in
- 17:52closer passed the whispering huddle of palms through a flagstone patio that led to a
- 17:56short flight of also flagstone steps. But there, when I was only a
- 18:00few feet from an uncurtained window, I stopped at the sight of something I
- 18:03hadn't expected, with the body of a woman lying in a twisted heap at
- 18:08the bottom of the stairs. When I moved closer, I saw that the
- 18:11ugly cut on the side of a head that had killed her had come from
- 18:15the jacket edge at the last step. I also saw that the woman was
- 18:18Midge Driscoll. Next to the body, there was an overturned crushed sprinkling can,
- 18:26which meant that she could have fallen to her death accidentally. Also,
- 18:30it could have meant that I murdered a killer had overturned and crushed the sprinkling
- 18:33can as well. I was somewhere between the two thoughts when I heard a
- 18:37car break to a stop in front of the house. Then high heels on
- 18:41a cement walk, it quietly moved around to where I could see something tall
- 18:45and blonde, who, in a better light would have been better looking.
- 18:49Good evening names, Philip Marlow mean anything and try this. I'm a friend
- 18:57of Midge Driscoll's. I never heard of anyone by that name. I bet
- 19:03step up a little closer, honey. Now wait a minute, mister high
- 19:08Midge. Yeah yeah, Midge in driscol name you never heard of? Remember?
- 19:14Now what do you say? Do we play it straight? Yeah?
- 19:17Yeah, I'm Needa LeVar, mister Marlow, maybe you're getting in deeper by
- 19:22the minute. And by that I specifically mean that Midge Driscoll here and Needle
- 19:25LeVar are one and the same. Oh you're crazy. I know my own
- 19:27name. It isn't always husband, Nita LeVar, that's Midge Driscoll. All
- 19:33right, since you've grown so cooperative, maybe you can tell me why she's
- 19:34dead. Could be that she fell down the stairs an hour before her unmasking?
- 19:40Is the heat wave heap? You know? An awful atmoshi? How
- 19:44come it's strictly business. I'm a private detective with clients. We'll talk about
- 19:48that later. Right now, it's time to go in and call the police.
- 19:52Don't tell me you can't find your key. Don't worry, private detective.
- 19:55I want here cat got it. Now, let's get inside. But
- 19:59let's not I call the police. Huh? Why not? Are you afraid
- 20:02that they'll I see what you and that pretty little gun mean. I'm glad.
- 20:07I'd hate to have to shoot you. Why I want to night you
- 20:08quota? Don't fay funny? I didn't kill Mitch, don't why no police
- 20:14for a very good reason. Until tonight, mollow, I've been the heat
- 20:18wave, the substitute heat wave for the lady there who didn't have the time
- 20:22or the talent for the build up to the great joke she was gonna pull
- 20:25on a system. You mean you were the one I saw today, the
- 20:27one everybody saw every day, and like like so much. The business boomed,
- 20:33and all the heads in the front row weren't bald, which has what
- 20:36to do with me calling the police in general, everything, in particular my
- 20:40career. I tried to get that crazy kid there to back off and let
- 20:44me go on with the act that she'd kill after one performance, but no,
- 20:47miss Bunny money Banks wouldn't hear of it. Now that she's dead,
- 20:49you're in, is that it silent? And that's also the reason why I
- 20:53don't want to spend the next two hours talking to cops. So go on,
- 20:57put the key in the lock, turn it, open the door,
- 21:00and walk in. What happens then, then, mister Marlow, we call
- 21:03Tracy Lake and arrange for a playmate for you. I made named Jesse.
- 21:07Maybe a playmate named Jesse and no maybe. When we got inside needle a
- 21:18vow, handled a prisoner with a finessa marine god detachment, took my gun
- 21:22through it across the room, put me into a far away straight back chair,
- 21:26and got through the Tracy Lake without once taking a baby blue eyes off
- 21:29me. And when she told the man she called Darling all about Midge's death,
- 21:32which could have been my benefit, she placed a rush order for the
- 21:34monster. After that, she hung up, sat down with a cigarette and
- 21:38waited. But a second lady, she was back on her feet when I
- 21:41said that friend Jesse was fast, she said, I should shut up and
- 21:45more it model. You do exactly as I say, hell me, I
- 21:48stay right where you are and don't so much as open your mouth. Who
- 21:52is it? Oh? Good? Come on in, hippy, Hi,
- 22:00since I knew it, Never mind what you're talking. Just come in and
- 22:03listen. It isn't midges night, hinky, it's mine, And don't ask
- 22:07questions now here? Oh what's a good for nea? What's the matter?
- 22:11A private detective, but public nuisance named Marlow? Marlow a detective. He
- 22:15told me it was from Josh Freeman's office. Ah, he was lying.
- 22:19Now get this hanky, Midge Driskell is out and back dead for what.
- 22:23I don't know why, and I care less. But Marlow here is crazy
- 22:26for calling the cock, which would leave me at midnight doing my big number
- 22:30for the desk. Tageant great, So use that guncy and hold him here
- 22:33until Jesse shows up, which should be any minute. Now, go bye
- 22:37and be careful, hanky hell on bright bye, gentle soul. Have Bonds.
- 22:41Never mind, Malow save the gap for Jesse. He's a great listener.
- 22:45I doubt if for give me the time, considering that, I know
- 22:48it's an odds on bet, it'll be a couple of slugs in my belt
- 22:49buckle before he's even in the room. Jesse kill you? Why would he
- 22:53do that? Because he works for Tracy Lake, and Tracy Lake has to
- 22:57kill me, Bonds. I know he's a murderer. Midge Drisco was murdered.
- 23:03You sure of that? Just about? It doesn't figure any other way.
- 23:07Nita herself told me how much this chance means to her and how hard
- 23:08she tried to get Midge to back off. Eh. But Tracy, how
- 23:12does he die? In two ways? The money you'll get out of the
- 23:15show continuing indefinitely, and better than that, the fact that he and Nita
- 23:18are going to be married? Those two get married? You're not smiler?
- 23:22No, No, that's straight, Bonds. I know because I overheard Tracy
- 23:26talking to a jeweler about the ring he ordered. You mind if I have
- 23:29a cigarette? Hey, Bonds, can I reach for a cigarette? Oh?
- 23:34Yeah? Okay, Hey Mallow, you sure this everything you just said?
- 23:41I mean about them getting married now sure I am. Why are a
- 23:45little disgusted with your buddies? Yeah, so as of right now you can
- 23:51do as you want. I'm believing Jesse. Hey, Jesse, don't shoot.
- 23:56I won't mister Bonds. Less, of course you buster try to get
- 24:00out of here. Yeah, you were gonna let Marlow go, mister Bonds.
- 24:06I don't think mister Lake would like that. I'm sure he wouldn't,
- 24:07Jesse, So why don't you just save everyone a lot of time and start
- 24:11pulling that trigger. You can still see what you're doing. Get going,
- 24:15Barnes, you you dirty lost. I'll till let me get out of here
- 24:21alive. Where are you? Come on? Talk? Why? Why?
- 24:30And to me? To me, it's pleasure, stink and slim. I'll
- 24:37tell you apart if I get my hands on you. It's Jesse boy,
- 24:40there's the trick. And after I'm meeting in a phone, both powers you
- 24:44pick eight pas at all. After I got some lights on and found my
- 24:52gun when Nita had tossed it when we first came in, I checked Jesse
- 24:55over once to make sure that he was neither dead nor too alive, and
- 24:57I started for the door. But there even as my hand closed over the
- 25:00knob, I stopped, a crazy thought from I don't know where wedging its
- 25:06way into my mind. I turned back toward the room and stared at the
- 25:08flower and bars strewn the form of the ape that covered half the coppet.
- 25:12Then slowly the wage broke through and there was light, lots of it,
- 25:15the kind in which I could see why Miss Drisco had been murdered, and
- 25:19more important, why I had to get to the Palace Theater a needle above
- 25:22before murder happened again. I lurched in the curb in front of Nitas.
- 25:30Of twenty minutes to twelve. When I screeched to a stop downtown at the
- 25:33Palace without somehow hitting or being hit along the way, those twenty minutes were
- 25:37gone, and I was worried because midnight meant that Nita would already be on
- 25:41stage for the unmasking. I raced past the general at the door and then
- 25:44acrossed the lobby and into the theater, where I figured I could get down
- 25:47a side aisle of the wings. That was figuring wrong, because fire laws
- 25:51notwithstanding, the place was strictly sro and packed tighter. In the seventh game
- 25:55World Series between the backs of aspiring. Next I could see that Nita,
- 25:59who was a FROs stage, and Tracy Lake himself and in the center of
- 26:02a single spotlight that could have opened a supermarket was still mass. So while
- 26:06I prayed that Laker was winding up the speel would think of bigger and better
- 26:08adjectives, I ran back to the lobby and ronde a fighter stairs that led
- 26:12to the first balcony, where over on one side and near the railing,
- 26:15I found an old man who was daddy to a trio of baby spots and
- 26:18the one giant that was on me there I shoved him aside just as Lake
- 26:22finishing. The maestro took over, and with one hand I got a good
- 26:25grip on the thirty eighth my pocket and with the other the handle on the
- 26:27big spot. Hey, what are you doing? Open? I'm wrong,
- 26:30dad, But if not hoping the gunna expect doesn't come from the wings.
- 26:33But hey, there in that side balcony near the curtain, see it,
- 26:37yeah gun all right, Hey, that chinky bar right, Let's give the
- 26:41funny man a big audience and lots of light. You're on fine, watch
- 26:45out, he's gonna shoot the USh and us at him, You got him,
- 26:49You got him. It was twenty minutes of bedlam, police music,
- 27:03and two quick numbers by Needle LeVar, all of who's shaking was not routine
- 27:07before the Palace got back to the quiet business of being a burlesque hous and
- 27:11the show went on. It was another hour and twenty minutes before it was
- 27:15all over, and the theater was empty and dark, except for a worklight
- 27:18on the stage where Nita, Tracy Lake, and I were sitting in the
- 27:21middle of a paper machet inca civilization. Well, Milo, the police say
- 27:25that Hinky's going to live for a while. I can't figure the guy.
- 27:27I never know. We felt that way about Nita here, Nidad. I
- 27:30was always okay to him, and I knew he could some But that's as
- 27:33fy as it went with you, Nita. Yeah. But with Hinky it
- 27:37was something else, something strong enough to make him kill Mitch Bisco so that
- 27:40Nita would get a big chance. He malo, mm hmm. And when
- 27:42he found out through me that you two were going to be married, he
- 27:45he realized that the murder he had committed was for nothing, and now he
- 27:49was going to make one count. So he turned on you Nita. How
- 27:53did you find out some time to get to him before he could make a
- 27:56try for Nita? And the way the guy sagged when I said you were
- 27:59going to be mar told me all I had to know. But it was
- 28:02cinched by the American beauties draped around Jesse American beauties flower. Yeah. See,
- 28:07I remember the phone call, Hinky Maide. You needed been the lady
- 28:11to talk to and loved Naron Outo was a little better than the shot in
- 28:15the dark. Two shots in the dark, Marlo, good ones that are
- 28:18responsible for Nita still being here with it. Thanks yeah, Mada, thanks
- 28:22a lot. I'll mention it. After all, I was paid for my
- 28:26work, and besides that dance you do needed along as to posterity a good
- 28:33night. It was still hot in the city. I had no enthusiasm for
- 28:51further conversation, the very sticky feeling from head to foot, so I took
- 28:56care of Karen Driscoll Junior in a fast telephone call and then pointed my cough
- 29:02my part. I couldn't help thinking of poor little Hinky Bonds brought laughter to
- 29:07everyone else. I could find no happiness for himself. He was like the
- 29:12man who went to see a doctor one day and said, doctor, I
- 29:17can't laugh anymore. And the doctor said, go and see Grock, the
- 29:21greatest clown of them all. If he can't make your laugh, there's no
- 29:25help for you. The man smiled and said, thank you, doctor.

- 31:02This is cd AS to Columbia Broadcasting System Welcome back. Well, this
- 31:17wasn't one of my favorite episodes. It's kind of hard for me to put
- 31:19a finger on as to why. Certainly it wasn't a bad one. I'm
- 31:25not going to go all Emily Braddock matter on it. I have to say
- 31:29my favorite part of this one was actually the end with Philip Marlow telling that
- 31:34story. It was actually pretty profound and it went very well with the solution.
- 31:40All right, Well, we have a couple housekeeping items now. First
- 31:45of all, this is I do want to say regarding the new headset,
- 31:48it really is appreciated having this support that allows us to make sure we're giving
- 31:55folks the best listening experience possible. We just got a lot of issues regarding
- 32:00the Snowball, and I don't think it's because Snowball's a bad mic. It
- 32:07may just be my particular setup and configuration of systems. If you've got more
- 32:13space or better sound equipment other than the snowball might work better. But even
- 32:20just playing back some of the of my own audio as I'm recording, it
- 32:25sounds so much better. So unless there's major objection to the new headset,
- 32:34we'll keep with it. But we got a good number of complaints with the
- 32:37snowball, so the snowball will go into mothballs for now, though I'm going
- 32:45to keep it around because when you're podcasting, stuff happens, Mike's break and
- 32:51you need to have a spare around so that, as they say in the
- 32:54stage, the show can go on. Now. I want to talk about
- 32:59video feed for a moment. Coming up on Sunday, We're going to bring
- 33:04you a television episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow, and I'm discussing it
- 33:09here because it's a somewhat obscure chapter in the character's history. Philip Marlow did
- 33:19come to television as a regular television show from nineteen fifty nine to sixty with
- 33:27Phil Carrey in the title role of Philip Marlowe. Carrie in the last nineteen
- 33:34or twenty years of his life was probably best known for his role on One
- 33:38Life to Live the long running soap opera. The series is essentially a somewhat
- 33:45typical late fifties early sixties detective show, and I have to say that's not
- 33:52a bad thing. I love late fifties early sixties detective shows. Peter Gunn
- 33:59and Johnny Staccato and all those guys a certain field of the show, and
- 34:06Marlow has it. Probably the most uniquely Marlow thing was the special gun storage,
- 34:14and it also has a great opening, and I hope you enjoy it.
- 34:17There are only two of the twenty six episodes, all of which are
- 34:22public domain, but only two are in public in circulation, and we'll play
- 34:28one of those for you this month, and another one of those further down
- 34:34the line. All right, well, that will do it for today.
- 34:37We will be back tomorrow with Nick Cartermaster Detective, and then join us next
- 34:42Wednesday for the adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send your comments
