- 0:00you know, credit to Vanderbilt. Um, they
- 0:02did a great job. Um, came out and played
- 0:04really well early. Um, you know, I
- 0:07thought we had a great environment
- 0:08tonight again and, you know, um, just
- 0:10want to continue to thank our fans for
- 0:13hanging in there with this team as we're
- 0:14trying to work through some things and,
- 0:16uh, you know, they did their part and we
- 0:18didn't do ours. So, for that, you know,
- 0:19I apologize. I got to do a better job as
- 0:21their coach, um, in these situations.
- 0:23But I thought Vanderbilt came out and
- 0:25you know that's the second game in a row
- 0:27where we had a defensive breakdown on
- 0:28the first possession and they they make
- 0:29a three and you know that just that does
- 0:32wonders for your confidence when you're
- 0:33able to come out and hit your first shot
- 0:34like that and um you know
- 0:38so that that big start. You know they
- 0:40they had some real step up from their
- 0:41bigs. You know Washington and MLKton
- 0:43played great. Um, you know, Molakton
- 0:45made some big ones early in the first
- 0:47half to kind of, you know, keep us at
- 0:49right around 8 to 10. And Washington,
- 0:51you know, he's made six threes on the
- 0:52year and, you know, makes two. Um, so,
- 0:55you know, they had some real step up
- 0:57and, uh, you know, Tanner does a great
- 0:59job. Um, got to the foul line 13 times,
- 1:02had six assists, one turnover. So, we
- 1:04didn't do a good enough job disrupting
- 1:06them defensively.
- 1:08Um, and that's on me. You know, I got to
- 1:10switch some things up defensively in
- 1:12some of these games. and we did that in
- 1:13the last 10 minutes and it was
- 1:15effective, but we got to do that
- 1:16earlier. Um, and offensively I just
- 1:18thought, you know, in the first half,
- 1:20um, we were four for 18 from two and one
- 1:25of our biggest emphasis was really
- 1:26attacking the paint and I thought we did
- 1:28that a lot tonight. And, um,
- 1:32yeah, I'm not, you know,
- 1:36I thought we should have gotten to the
- 1:37foul line more in the first half, uh,
- 1:39just based on how aggressive we were
- 1:40attacking downhill. Um,
- 1:44I think, you know, the lack of us
- 1:46getting to the foul line led to some
- 1:48frustration and, uh, it kind of carried
- 1:50over. So, we we got to do a better job
- 1:51of controlling our emotions. Um, not
- 1:54interacting with the officials as much
- 1:56because they have a tough job. And, uh,
- 1:58you know, I thought that last, you know,
- 2:008 minutes, the group we had out there
- 2:02did a great job of really fighting back
- 2:03and putting us in a position to, you
- 2:06know, cut it to four and we get a stop
- 2:08and we have a shot to cut it to two. And
- 2:10um yeah, they uh you know, they did a
- 2:13great job executing down the stretch and
- 2:15uh you know, another disappointing
- 2:18result, but you know, we um continue to
- 2:21have great opportunities in front of us.
- 2:23We just got to find a way to uh you
- 2:25know, we got to improve. We got to get
- 2:27better. So, take any questions.
- 2:30>> Coach, Saturday, you said you needed
- 2:31your best players to play better defense
- 2:33to win. How did you assess your best
- 2:35players and the defense that they played
- 2:37tonight?
- 2:39Yeah, I mean we we did a good job on
- 2:40Nickel, you know, three for 12, only 10
- 2:43points. Um, you know, Tanner is six for
- 2:4516, but he gets to the foul line 13
- 2:47times. So, we really talked about
- 2:48limiting those two. And, you know, I
- 2:50thought for the most part, you know, he
- 2:51got to the foul line probably six times
- 2:53late. So, I thought we did a decent job
- 2:54on those two. They just had some real
- 2:55step up from some of their um, you know,
- 3:00uh, other guys. And, uh, you know, good
- 3:03teams will do that. And um you know
- 3:05Washington having 22 that you know
- 3:07wasn't something that was on my bingo
- 3:09card but you know credit to him played
- 3:11great. Um
- 3:14you know I think um I'll have to watch
- 3:17the film Mike and just kind of see but I
- 3:19thought you know the effort was there. I
- 3:22thought the execution wasn't. Um but
- 3:25part of that's on me too. I got to do
- 3:26some things defensively to get us a
- 3:28little more active flying around and
- 3:29trying to be a little more aggressive
- 3:30like we were at the end. So we got to do
- 3:32some more of that moving forward. So me
- 3:34that's on me as their coach. I gota do a
- 3:36better job of putting them in positions
- 3:37to make plays.
- 3:38>> Coach, 26 minutes for Keshan Hall was
- 3:41not on the floor down the stretch.
- 3:42Seemed like it was after the technical
- 3:44foul that decision came to to not put it
- 3:46back in. Can you kind of walk us through
- 3:47that a little bit?
- 3:48>> Yeah, I just went with the guys that I
- 3:50thought put us in the best position to
- 3:52get back into the game. And you know, we
- 3:53end up cutting it to four and that group
- 3:55did a really good job of just grinding
- 3:56and fighting and calling back in. And
- 3:59you know, uh, Vanderbilt did a really
- 4:00good job every time Kei had the ball of
- 4:02just like plugging the paint and, uh,
- 4:04made it really difficult for him and our
- 4:05offense wasn't really in sync when he
- 4:07was on the floor. So, wanted to give us
- 4:08a different look and, uh, you know, went
- 4:10with those guys. And I thought, you
- 4:11know, we had a lot of good good, you
- 4:13know, good minutes from Elijah. I
- 4:14thought Elijah played well. Obviously,
- 4:15didn't shoot it great. Um, but, you
- 4:18know, got eight big rebounds and, you
- 4:19know, was really aggressive and, um, you
- 4:22know, it's it was just a it was a
- 4:25coach's decision. I just wanted to go
- 4:26with a group that I thought was going to
- 4:28help us get back into the game.
- 4:30>> Todd in the second half really felt like
- 4:32he was speeding the game up and gave you
- 4:34all a chance to come back. Is that
- 4:35something you know you'd like to see
- 4:36kind of more out of him moving forward?
- 4:39>> Yeah, I mean he's, you know, had two
- 4:40pretty good offensive games. You know,
- 4:41another game where, you know, if he's
- 4:43one for six from three, like I thought
- 4:44two or three of them were down. Um, so,
- 4:47you know, four assists, one turnover.
- 4:49He's had 11 assists and three turnovers
- 4:50in the last two games. So, you know,
- 4:52that's good. Um, you know, Tahad, you
- 4:55know, took some some coaching this week
- 4:57about, you know, his offball positioning
- 4:58and he did such a great job in practice
- 5:00this week of just like trying to coach
- 5:01guys through things and, um, you know,
- 5:04just want to give him some credit on
- 5:05that because, um, I've been I've been
- 5:07pretty harsh on Tahad and in some of
- 5:08these pressers because he's one of my
- 5:10best players and I expect a lot out of
- 5:11him. But, you know, I thought he really
- 5:13battled tonight. I thought he really,
- 5:15you know, put in a great effort and, uh,
- 5:17you know, that's what something we're
- 5:18going to need from him moving forward.
- 5:19So, I'm glad he's playing with a little
- 5:20more confidence. He did a he did a he
- 5:22did a he did our best job getting
- 5:23downhill and finishing at the rim. You
- 5:24know I think he was six for 12 on twos.
- 5:26Got to the foul line. So um you know did
- 5:29a good job getting us back into it and I
- 5:31thought he had some ones that were you
- 5:32know halfway in down the stretch that
- 5:34could have changed the game.
- 5:36>> You mentioned the effort being there on
- 5:38defense but the execution not
- 5:39necessarily being there. I guess how did
- 5:41you see the guys respond leading up to
- 5:42this game after Alabama and I guess
- 5:44where do you guys go from here? You know
- 5:45now it's kind of issue is shifting a
- 5:47little bit.
- 5:48>> What' you say at the end? I guess where
- 5:50do you guys go from here? You know, you
- 5:51say it's not as much an effort issue,
- 5:52but more execution.
- 5:54>> Yeah, we just got to, you know, we got
- 5:55to stay consistent. Like I know, you
- 5:57know, people are going to be panicking
- 5:58right now, but you know, if you look
- 6:00going into this game, you know, based on
- 6:02our adjusted efficiency, we we've been
- 6:04the second best team in our conference
- 6:05going into this game, you know. So,
- 6:08while the results haven't been there,
- 6:10like this team has continued to get
- 6:11better. So, we got to just trust what
- 6:13we're doing, but we also got to tweak
- 6:14some of the things that we're doing
- 6:15defensively to try and, you know, be a
- 6:17little more aggressive in some of the
- 6:18things that we're doing to give us an
- 6:19opportunity to make plays and not let
- 6:20teams be more be comfortable in what
- 6:22they're doing. Um, you know, because,
- 6:25you know, we we've shown that we've been
- 6:26able to win some games with our defense
- 6:27this year when our offense wasn't going
- 6:29and we didn't do that tonight. You know,
- 6:30we shot 32% in the first half and they
- 6:32shot 57. Um, so they did a really good
- 6:35job executing in the first half and, you
- 6:36know, our defense just wasn't as good as
- 6:38as what it was in the last 10 minutes.
- 6:40So, uh, I got to do a better job, um,
- 6:42getting these guys prepared and I got to
- 6:44do a better job of making adjustments in
- 6:46game to, uh, give us a better chance to
- 6:48to win these ones.
- 6:49>> Stephen, the technical after Vanderbilt
- 6:52hit that three, just I guess what was
- 6:53the explanation from the officials on
- 6:56that
- 6:57>> mine or Kos?
- 6:58>> Just them talking to you just what I
- 7:00don't know like what what did they tell
- 7:01you about I guess blowing the whistle on
- 7:03that? on my technical or on Okay, sorry.
- 7:07>> I said that was a big call because on
- 7:10the uh pressure when they called the
- 7:12foul on Tanner, he had already passed
- 7:14the ball. So, I thought there was no
- 7:15advantage. There was no disadvantage to
- 7:18the contact that we had in the trap. So,
- 7:20I thought since he got off of it, I
- 7:22didn't think the call needed to be
- 7:23needed to happen. Usually, they call
- 7:24those things when there's an advantage
- 7:25for the defense, if that makes sense.
- 7:27Right. So, I thought since he got got
- 7:29rid of it, I didn't think you needed to
- 7:31call that in that moment. So, as as he's
- 7:33running down, I said that was a big call
- 7:36and he teed me up and he said I cussed
- 7:37at him and uh you know, I was miked up
- 7:40tonight, so maybe I got to check the
- 7:42feed. But I asked my bench like, "Did I
- 7:44cuss at him?" And they they said no. So,
- 7:46um really disappointed. Like, you know,
- 7:48I I've tried to pride myself in not
- 7:50really getting after the officials. I
- 7:52just slapped the video board um to try
- 7:55and, you know, take my frustration on
- 7:57something. Um but yeah, I mean, I didn't
- 8:01curse at him. Yeah, I just said that was
- 8:02a big call, man. Like that was that was,
- 8:04you know, it was went for a six-point
- 8:06game and then I think they got a stop
- 8:07and came down and scored again. So, it
- 8:09was just like felt like a big shift in
- 8:10momentum on a call that I didn't think
- 8:12needed to happen. But, you know, those
- 8:13guys have a really difficult job. Um,
- 8:15there's a lot of contact in that game
- 8:17and uh, you know, disappointed though,
- 8:20you know, um, because I got a lot of
- 8:23respect for those guys and I would
- 8:24never, you know, berate them or curse at
- 8:27them like that. Um, so yeah, not didn't
- 8:30didn't think I earned that one.
- 8:31>> We'll take a few more. Caleb,
- 8:33>> Stephen, a couple times, you know, the
- 8:34last three or four games, you guys have
- 8:35fallen in the hole pretty early on. Just
- 8:37how difficult does it make it to fight
- 8:39back kind of in the second half. How
- 8:41does that change the game?
- 8:44>> Yeah, I mean, Alabama game, we were up
- 8:4610, so that wasn't really an issue. At
- 8:48Tennessee, we got down 14. Um, Texas, we
- 8:52got down
- 8:54>> 14, right? So, and then tonight, you
- 8:56know, we get down 15 in the second half.
- 8:59So, yeah, we got to do a better job of
- 9:01we might switch up some things. I don't
- 9:02know if if that if that's the answer.
- 9:04It'd be helpful if we could win a tip.
- 9:06Um, you know, I feel like we've lose one
- 9:08every game and they get the first
- 9:10possession. So, um, you know, we just we
- 9:13got to do a better job starting off
- 9:14defensively and getting stops because,
- 9:15you know, in that four game stretch
- 9:16where we won four games, like one of the
- 9:18commonalities was we got to stop on our
- 9:20first possession in all four of those
- 9:22games. So, we got to do a better job. um
- 9:25starting out games because you know it's
- 9:26in this league like there's a lot of
- 9:28good teams and if you get in a double
- 9:29digit hole you know it's really hard to
- 9:31come back so we got to do a better job
- 9:32of uh getting off to better starts and
- 9:34you know two of our last three of our
- 9:36last four we've got off to bad starts
- 9:38>> Nathan and then finish
- 9:39>> Stephen how important is it going to be
- 9:40to protect home court from here on out
- 9:42obviously these are a couple good teams
- 9:44analytically that you just lost to but
- 9:46the opportunities and the resume sort of
- 9:48down the stretch last few weeks this
- 9:49season how important is it going to be
- 9:51to to maybe get some of those games back
- 9:52on your home
- 9:54Yeah, I can't really like think about
- 9:57those games. I got I gota think about
- 9:59Arkansas because uh they're really good.
- 10:01Um so for us it's like you know we can't
- 10:04get too focused on you know games three
- 10:08or four down the road like you got to
- 10:09get we got to get ready for Arkansas and
- 10:11we got to find a way to have a great
- 10:12practice on Thursday. So, um, but
- 10:14protecting home court is really
- 10:16important. You know, one because
- 10:17obviously, you know, we've it's
- 10:19disappointing because we had two teams
- 10:20that, you know, were really good that
- 10:22had good analytics that could have
- 10:23really helped our resume and we lost to
- 10:25both. Um, so missed opportunities there.
- 10:28Um, but we got to go find a way to, you
- 10:30know, steal a couple on the road and
- 10:32then like you said, you know, try and
- 10:33protect home court, you know, later in
- 10:34the season. But the only way we're going
- 10:36to be able to do that is if, you know,
- 10:37we uh refocus and uh, you know, come
- 10:40back ready to go on Thursday. you
- 10:42mentioned earlier, but you know, Elijah
- 10:44not being able to play as much because
- 10:45of foul trout
- 10:50being out, but you know, just what could
- 10:52he bring for you specifically and kind
- 10:54of how can he build on this moving
- 10:55forward? Um, you know, as as a player,
- 10:58making an impact for you. Yeah, I mean
- 11:00he's, you know, he's he's coachable,
- 11:02uh, plays hard, you know, does all the
- 11:05little things that we ask of him and,
- 11:07uh, you know, I know he has so much more
- 11:08to offer offensively that, you know, I'm
- 11:10really excited to be able to tap into at
- 11:12some point. Um, but, you know, he's just
- 11:15he's a good teammate. You know, he's
- 11:16he's been patient. He's waited his turn
- 11:18and, you know, I love that he was able
- 11:20to play more tonight and be effective.
- 11:22You know, um, only had one foul tonight.
- 11:25So yeah, I mean it's it's it's great to
- 11:27have him out there because, you know, he
- 11:29he rebounds the basketball. He's got
- 11:31great length. You know, to be plus eight
- 11:33in a eight-point loss, that's
- 11:36significant. So, that's something that,
- 11:38you know, we got to look more into and
- 11:40look to try and get him some more
