- 1:38Okay, well, we have a little bit of an extra bonus for
- 1:42today's episode. The lineup was airing right before the evening news and the cases
- 1:49were a bit shorter to accommodate the evening news. Well, this particular recording
- 1:57actually had a copy of the evening news that came after the lineup, and
- 2:04my initial instinct was just to go ahead and cut the file, but we
- 2:10don't have any listener comments, so I decided to include it. It's from
- 2:16October twenty second, nineteen fifty two, and I guess we can compare campaign
- 2:22rhetoric from then versus as the presidential election was a few days away versus what
- 2:28we have now. But a nice little historical extra. Let's enjoy the lineup
- 2:35the green cap case. Ladies and gentlemen. We take you now behind the
- 2:40scenes of a police headquarters in a great American city. We're under the cold,
- 2:45glaring lights. What passed before us? The innocent, the vagrant,
- 2:49the thief, the murderer. This is the lineup, not laid my lieutenant,
- 3:25No, no, you're in time, brag. I'll let rain outside.
- 3:29I thought I'd never get here, so coming down something fierce and we

- 3:52you will see will be numbered. I'll call off a number their name in
- 3:53charge. You have any questions or identifications, Please remember the number of signs
- 3:58of the prisoners. I call his name at the end of each line.
- 4:00When I ask for questions or identifications, call out the number. If you're
- 4:03sure, are not too sure of the suspect, have him help the questions
- 4:06I asked. These suspects are merely to get a natural tonal voice, not
- 4:11pay too much attention to their answers, as they often lie. All right,
- 4:14bring on the line. Step it up, boys, that's right right

- 9:13when I ask you a couple more questions? Sure, lieutenant, be glad
- 9:16to I'll be in my car. It was kind of a shock. I
- 9:18never saw it, did mean before you. Let's see how the lab boys
- 9:22are doing. Get anything from traffic only the approximate time between eight twelve and
- 9:28eight seventeen. How's it going follow? Oh hi, lieutenant, he'll take
- 9:33another half three quarters of an hour. Quite a mess. Yeah, you
- 9:37must have put up quite a fight. At least three slugs in them,
- 9:39maybe four of them. And what's that under the ladder over there? The
- 9:45green cap? The attendants don't know. We'll check it at the lab.
- 9:48Must have been counting his receipts just before it happened, yeh led your book?
- 9:54What's of small change and bills scattered around? It's like whoever did it
- 9:56couldn't have taken anything, only the attendant's life. Can you come out here?
- 10:00Him in a bed? Yeah, sure, Quine. This is John
- 10:03Pashley, that's sending company supervisor for the service stations in this area. It
- 10:07came down to see if you could help Gothick. Glad and nice for you
- 10:09to come down, mister Pashley. It's my job. Even if it wasn't,
- 10:13I'd be here. Benazer was one of our best men. Oh that
- 10:16was his name. Yeah, William Brenizer been with us since October of forty
- 10:20five. We put him on his night manager of the station here at Harper
- 10:24and sixty seventh a little over a year ago. You know anything else about
- 10:26him? Well, let's see, thirty eight, married a wife named Mary,
- 10:31two children, girl fourteen, boys seven. It's going to be tough
- 10:35on them. Yeah, you know what happened here yet it looks like an
- 10:39attempt at robbery. Brenners are trying to put up a fight, but our
- 10:41men are all worn not to resist of any such attempts at made. Lieutenant,
- 10:46have you seen the inside of that office. I guess there was a
- 10:48struggle, all right, But I didn't think Berenizer would put up the fight.
- 10:52Why not? Thought too much of his wife and kids. He'd been
- 10:56trying to get off nightwork because of him. Ask for a transfer to a
- 10:58day job upstate. Too bad, he didn't get it. He did,
- 11:03He's going up there next week. I hate this job. Somebody's got to
- 11:28do it. There is a lou's emake no, hello there, missus Brenason.
- 11:37That's right, we're police officers. Could we talk to you for a
- 11:39minute? Police? Sure, come in out of that rain. Do you
- 11:43mind coming back to the kitchen. I've got some pies and I don't want
- 11:46him to burn. For sure. You're policemen, you say, that's right,
- 11:50Missus Brenizer. Bills, are you not exactly? Excuse me a minute.
- 11:54I want to check those pies I'm making. Some apple pies are their
- 11:58favorites. He'll be home in the pond. He loves hot apple pie when
- 12:01he comes home. I'll be ready in a minute. I thought maybe you
- 12:07were those two squad car men right around near the gas station. No,
- 12:09we're not them. Bills told me about them, how they sort of keep
- 12:13an eye on the place makes me feel better knowing they're around. They're working
- 12:16nights and all you know, and missus Brenda's there there. There was some
- 12:18trouble down at the Phillish station tonight. Trouble attempted to hold up Bill.
- 12:26Something's happened. What's happened, Jelly, what's happened? Your husband was shot?
- 12:33Missus shot? Bill's shot? Yes, man, No, couldn't be.
- 12:43Where is he. I've got to get to him. Where is he?
- 12:48Bill's yeah, Disney dead, Yes, ma'am. He promised me wouldn't
- 12:56fight. Anybody tried to hold him up. I promised. We're leaving next
- 13:05week, being transferred to a new job of state. You won't have to
- 13:11work nights anymore. I won't have to work ye. Excuse me, please,
- 13:22hies. I think they're burning. Children were looking forward to it having
- 13:35their daddy home for dinner. They've missed that, not having their daddy home
- 13:43for dinner. Tomorrow night. Most of these same CBS stations will present another
- 14:03lineup, a great lineup of musical shows, The Jack Smith Dinah Shore Show,
- 14:09The Peggy Lee Show, The Doris Day Show, and The Bing Crosby
- 14:11Show with Jimmy Stewart as Bing's special guest. So for a great musical lineup,
- 14:16be with CBS tomorrow night. I p here's ballistics recording the slugs that
- 14:41killed Brenna's been. Oh good, let's see thirty two kindiber automatic fired from
- 14:48foreign smokeless cockridge cuses foreign Yeah, frickers say, is probably a Belgian maker.
- 14:54The automatic use right hand rifling. Anything on record the matches, Oh
- 15:00nothing, that wouldn't be get the autopsy report. There it is one bullet
- 15:03wound vicinity, right temple, one just to the left of the spine at
- 15:07the shoulder blade, one of the shoulder joint, another below the armpit,
- 15:09to the rear, one eye badly bruised. Four shots three in the back.
- 15:15Uh huh. How you figure it happened? Well, runners there must
- 15:18have started counting his seats around eight o'clock. They know five Trafton Salvason came
- 15:24by in car sixty two. A couple of minutes later somebody walked in with
- 15:28the gun. Must have cased the joint, knew about sixty two, and
- 15:31waited till it got cleared. It could be when as they put up a
- 15:33fight for a while, unless when the latter turned over and the killer lost
- 15:37his cap. Are you sure the cap wasn't Brenners's His wife and brother in
- 15:41law say no, oh, you want some coffee? Ben? And now
- 15:46what about all those shots runners? They must have tried to break away.
- 15:50That's when he got the three in the back, the fourth one in the
- 15:54temple after he hit the deck. Yeah, there wasn't any hold up.
- 15:58Then, Oh, something's fully has to beat. Oh shots, no money
- 16:03taken? Brendezer puts up a fight when company orders are to relax. It
- 16:11must be great to work out a homicide. Nothing to do but guzzle coffee
- 16:14all day? Different than the lab. Huh, Fuller, I know you
- 16:17know it? Sure, slaven all day over a hot pinnuckled deck. You
- 16:21should live so long? What have you got for some? That cap for
- 16:22well? It size six and seven eighths taping is unusual. Cotton fifty percent
- 16:29wool cap was made on two types of sewing machines. One was a Singer
- 16:33single needle number twenty four to seven, the other a Singer double needle number
- 16:36twenty four to thirty six. Yeah, boiled down, what does that mean?
- 16:38You shouldn't have any trouble? Running down the manufacturer anything else. I
- 16:42suppose you'd like a description of the killer. Let it help. You might
- 16:45try looking for a young white male with medium brown straight he thanks. We
- 16:49will fade. Take McDonald's slowmasher and KWin and make the round of the cap
- 16:55manufacturers. Find out who made that cap, would store handle it? Who
- 16:57bought it? Right? I'll check with Brenners's family. I look for another
- 17:00motor besides robbery, got three? What's that? Got another gas station job?
- 17:06Like Brens. They got one of the guys who did it? Hi?
- 17:25Hi? Another brend is a deal? All right? Stick up shooting?
- 17:27No do taking the attendant den Yeah, two punks pulled the job.
- 17:32Attendant shot one of them before he died. Other one got away. He
- 17:34was wearing a green cap. Then that's one of the one we found of
- 17:37Brenne is Now where's the one who was shine? Over there? They're loading
- 17:40him into the end and then let's get on. Sure is a bad way.
- 17:42They figure he'll be d l A. Can he talk? Little?
- 17:45Doesn't make much sense? Okay, Ja, let's get more and Mike,
- 17:49how's he doing? Don't bet them any talk and notwhing can hurt him?
- 17:52Now I'll ride along, all right? Sure, Ben, I bring back
- 17:56my car pete. Okay, Ben, let's got Mike. Have your s
- 18:07Lieutenant. All I can do is put some sailing solution into him. Okay,

- 19:55and I got a squatt each? Lots the garages in sam Un. That's
- 19:57the guys by the name of Steve who. Yeah, anything on the caps
- 20:02the quin should be ensumed with a preliminary report. How are you making out
- 20:04on the grudge motive? Families says nothing doing. I have a call in
- 20:08for passioning. Renner's his boss with the arcum. Yeah here about ballistics.
- 20:15No report yet. I'll give you eight to fire the same type slugs killed
- 20:18both men. No, bet, Gothy, this is pecially Lieutenant Turck got
- 20:25that message you left for man, I think you might have something there.
- 20:26How's that passion? Well, I hadn't thought of it until I got your
- 20:30message. But Renisser was going to be transferred upstate next week. Yeah,
- 20:33yeah, I know. Well he had an assistant working for him at the
- 20:36station, the young kid around nineteen. He thought he ought to get Brenniser's
- 20:38job. That Reniser wouldn't recommend him though too unreliable. He threw a few
- 20:44punches about it. What's this man's name? I went along with Brenniser,
- 20:47of course, had to fire the boy. He blamed. Brenna's report said
- 20:49something about getting even what's his name? Oh well, I looked it up
- 20:52as soon as I got your message. It's where Steve ware pretty unsteady kid.
- 20:57He mostly I'm bad. Do they ever call him torchy? Oh that
- 21:02I wouldn't know? You get an address warning? Yeah, we have,
- 21:04but it's no good. How's that may lot his severance pain? It came
- 21:07back unknown at that addresses? Oh well, what about references relative anything like
- 21:12that? I might have something better for you. Well. One of the
- 21:17boys here ran into him a couple of days ago said he was working at
- 21:18Rutger's garage a nineteen hundred block on the Harveston. Do you think that might
- 21:23help? Good? Mind? Okap, nobody's come out here, and Wearing's
- 21:41still in there. What's the pitch? Donald and Travis have the exit ramps
- 21:45covered, working at the rear door. Johnson asher at the sides. How
- 21:48do we take him? He's working the grease pits main floor in the rear
- 21:52row. Manager's got everybody working as huge and shouldn't be any trouble that's going.
- 21:56Yeah, grace pits are back. That we assume which one's Wearing over

- 28:08Political Committee of the United Nations took an unexpected action tonight, voting fifty one
- 28:12to five for an immediate debate on the touchy Korean question. We have no
- 28:18late report on the fighting in Korea, but the Defense Department in Washington reports
- 28:22nine hundred and sixty two American casualties last week, which is the highest toll
- 28:25since July. The latest shots in the political war were fired a few minutes
- 28:30ago by President Truman in Pittsburgh, where he's fighting to win for Governor Stevenson
- 28:33the thirty six electoral votes of Pennsylvania, which the President himself lost to Thomas
- 28:38Jewey four years ago. Before an enthusiastic Pittsburgh audience tonight, President Truman said
- 28:44he's glad to see that in recent days, General Eisenhower, speaking in the
- 28:48Eastern States has sounded somewhat less like an isolationist, but said the President,
- 28:52I cannot trust a man who has played this kind of game with the grave
- 28:56issues of national security, and he urged his listeners to choose a man,
- 29:00man who maintains his principles under fire, and that is he said Governor Stevenson
- 29:04in Upstate, New York, General Eisenhower finished a New England tour before enormous
- 29:08audiences with a speech tonight in Troy, where he devoted himself to the subject
- 29:12of the nation's finances. He accused the administration of systematically encouraging inflation and using
- 29:18inflation as a national policy. The General's remedy consists of three steps, one
- 29:23knocking down the administration idol of cheap money, two getting unified action from the
- 29:29government's economic agencies, and three slicing the fat out of the national budget.
- 29:33And General Eisenhower spoke scornfully of the administration's controls over prices. He said they
- 29:38are nothing but weak stopgaps. Governor Adley Stevenson is in New York State too,
- 29:44and we're just getting the reports of his speech in Buffalo, where he
- 29:47said General Eisenhower is guilty of a cruel hoax by holding out hope for the
- 29:51swift release of people who are now enslaved behind the Iron curtain, and Governor
- 29:56Stevenson went on, it's a great tragedy that the Republican old go Guard has
- 30:00now succeeded in doing what Hitler's best generals never could do. They have captured
- 30:04General Eisenhower. Two items from abroad. The Coalition government of Austria has fallen
- 30:11after seven years of running the country, the members of its various parties unable
- 30:15to agree on a budget for the coming year. And a note from Iran,
- 30:18which is now definitely broken off diplomatic relations with Great Britain. The Foreign
- 30:22Ministry of Iran borrowed a book from the British embassy in Tehran, a book
- 30:26on the rules to be followed when a nation breaks relations with another. The
- 30:30Iranians borrowed the rule book several weeks ago, and when the British asked for
- 30:33it back last week, the Iranian government said they were still using it.
- 30:37But now the break is official and Iran should be able to return to the
- 30:41British the book on how to break relations. This is Robert Trout in New
