- 0:00All right, question for coach Gish.
- 0:02>> Alex, talk about portal hall for you
- 0:05guys and just are you in the final
- 0:07stages of that or are there any other
- 0:09positions you're you're looking at
- 0:10adding? I know it's kind of late in the
- 0:11game here with classes and everything
- 0:12like that.
- 0:13>> Yeah, we uh you know, we we have a
- 0:15little bit of room. It's this last part
- 0:18of there's there's going to be this last
- 0:21surge of kids that potentially graduate
- 0:24in May. Um you know, they still got to
- 0:26go to school. It's like a thing still.
- 0:29Um, so graduate in May, there's some
- 0:31late May out junior college guys, um,
- 0:35some late qualifier high school guys.
- 0:36We've left ourselves a little bit of
- 0:38room, but for the most part, you feel
- 0:40like it's close to them.
- 0:42>> Running back room, being able to keep
- 0:43Jeremiah and adding multiple proven
- 0:45backs, I guess, what's your vision for
- 0:46that room and how big was it to add
- 0:47Bryson and Nikai?
- 0:50>> Yeah, you know what, it was it was a
- 0:51matter of adding just college reps. you
- 0:54you you feel like the the younger you
- 0:57are in that room, the scarier it is
- 0:59going into the year, it was a matter of
- 1:00adding like Bryson brings real two
- 1:04really two and a half years of starting
- 1:07game experience at the power four level.
- 1:10Uh more than anything the kind of kid he
- 1:12is like he he was hungry to go play in
- 1:14an offense where he can run the ball,
- 1:15wanted to play in the SEC, wanted to
- 1:17play against the best talent in the
- 1:18country. That's what you were looking
- 1:20for in general in the portal. We wanted
- 1:22guys that that ran to an opportunity to
- 1:25play in the best league in the country
- 1:27and and truly ran to an offense, at
- 1:31least offensively ran to an offense and
- 1:33then defensively ran to a defense that
- 1:36they knew they were going to play at a
- 1:37high level. Bryson was was that
- 1:39certainly Nikai brings Nikai's still
- 1:41young. That that's the thing with as
- 1:43excited as we were about Nikai, he's
- 1:46still a baby. I mean, he's a red shirt
- 1:47freshman. Missed his whole freshman
- 1:48year. everything he did was kind of on
- 1:51raw talent and he's still got to
- 1:53continue to develop uh Taye in the same
- 1:55breath. You wanted a guy that that had
- 1:58experience playing um and and running
- 2:01the ball is one thing. The pass
- 2:03protection is is the biggest thing that
- 2:04comes with experience and seeing
- 2:06defenses and seeing pre-nap reads and um
- 2:09you feel like we went from man, what
- 2:11exactly are we going to do here to to a
- 2:14really really good room? You started off
- 2:16with Jeremiah having him back. It was
- 2:18actually just at at his high school two
- 2:19days ago. Kind of a deja vu moment. Last
- 2:22time I was there was four years ago,
- 2:24five years ago, I guess, now at a
- 2:25different school recruiting him. Um, but
- 2:28he brings a a veteran presence and a
- 2:31true Auburn man that that started there
- 2:34wants wants to finish there and
- 2:36certainly really excited about that.
- 2:38>> You got DJ Broen from this area over at
- 2:40MGM, Bryce Kane from uh Baker High
- 2:42School. How important is the Gulf Coast
- 2:44uh in your recruiting efforts from this
- 2:46season and moving forward?
- 2:47>> Yeah, huge. I think just really covering
- 2:51this state has been such a priority for
- 2:53us. It's where we started, you know,
- 2:55this period's so crazy. I I think I end
- 2:57up with nine days out on the road with
- 3:00with finishing portal recruiting um
- 3:03which was a priority, our own team being
- 3:04a priority and then being able to get
- 3:06out. But the entire state's huge
- 3:08certainly right here in Mobile is
- 3:10absolutely huge for us. Um, you look at
- 3:12the guys that have come out of here,
- 3:13that have played at Auburn. Um,
- 3:15absolutely huge.
- 3:17>> Wanted to ask you about what's going on
- 3:18in college basketball right now with
- 3:20Charles Federako and how that could
- 3:21translate potentially to college
- 3:23football. You know, if a guy declares
- 3:24for the draft, goes undrafted, or is
- 3:26even on a practice squad in the NFL,
- 3:29them potentially coming back and, you
- 3:31know, using up the rest of their
- 3:32eligibility, the college ranks.
- 3:34>> Would you believe me if I haven't paid
- 3:36much attention to it? Um I I man crazy
- 3:41would add a bigger pool of players,
- 3:43wouldn't it? Um I don't know. Um I
- 3:47really don't. It It would certainly
- 3:50add a bigger pool of kids. You know, I I
- 3:53think college football is evolving so
- 3:56fast and every single time there's a
- 3:57situation like that, your my antennas go
- 4:00up and, you know, I think with every
- 4:02change or every
- 4:05ruling or lack of ruling, you you've got
- 4:07an opportunity to either sit and
- 4:08complain about it, which I think we tend
- 4:11to as coaches. Um I've always looked at
- 4:14it the other way. It's like, man,
- 4:15where's the loophole in here? Where
- 4:16who's available out there that we can go
- 4:18get that fits what we do? Uh but
- 4:20certainly fascinating um from legal
- 4:22side. Fascinating. Um
- 4:26>> yeah, how did it work out for him last
- 4:28weekend?
- 4:29>> Pretty good.
- 4:30>> Did it?
- 4:30>> Well, he won last night. 14 and six in
- 4:3218 minutes. So,
- 4:33>> gotcha.
- 4:34>> Alex, is this the offensive line
- 4:35rebuild? What What do you think of that
- 4:37room and and having to go out and and
- 4:39you guys brought in some experience,
- 4:41some depth. What do you think about the
- 4:42offensive line group so far? Yeah, that
- 4:44was a group you go in and um man, if if
- 4:49there was anything you were like, how's
- 4:50this going to play out? Um it because it
- 4:53wasn't just filling the what you felt
- 4:56like were the starters. you felt like
- 4:58you needed to fill some backup roles and
- 5:01and we're in a situation we walked in,
- 5:03signed a big freshman class and a really
- 5:05talented freshman class and you felt
- 5:08like there was a really talented young
- 5:10group in there but it was filling
- 5:12filling those roles where those guys can
- 5:14develop and give those guys time to
- 5:16develop. Um I think you know you you
- 5:18kind of saw how it progressed. We
- 5:20started with the tackle spots. We felt
- 5:22like we wor then worked to the interior
- 5:24of the line. feel like we got a ton of
- 5:27experienced guys. That was what similar
- 5:29to the running back group, we wanted
- 5:30guys that had played at a high level and
- 5:32and not just a year, but guys that had
- 5:34started for multiple years and can
- 5:37understand the tempo at which which
- 5:39defenses in this league play. And I I
- 5:41think we did a really really good job. I
- 5:43I still feel like, man, if there's one
- 5:45out there, you feel like you can go get
- 5:47one. I think that's a position where
- 5:49you're always looking and you're never
- 5:50really done. But I do feel like we've
- 5:52got some veteran presence. I'm really
- 5:54excited about the youth in that room.
- 5:56Um, you hope you don't find out about
- 5:57the youth here for a while, though.
- 5:59>> How much does having a center and a
- 6:00quarterback who've played for you before
- 6:02speed up the the installation of the
- 6:04offense?
- 6:05>> Monumental. Um, I I think absolutely
- 6:10priceless. It honestly lets you go to
- 6:12sleep at night a little bit to where,
- 6:15you know, like we're not there right
- 6:16now. Um, you got our got our young
- 6:19coaches there. Obviously, they're with
- 6:20the strength staff, but they're plugging
- 6:22already. And I I think every day that
- 6:25that you can get ahead offensively, uh,
- 6:28and you feel like there's continuity and
- 6:30rhythm, you got a chance to have
- 6:31success, you you can kind of skip that
- 6:33first couple of games where people are
- 6:34are figuring it out. Um, both Cole and
- 6:37and Byum honestly let you let you sleep
- 6:40at night a little bit. And and Cole has
- 6:42position flexibility. Um, there's some
- 6:45guys in that room on the interior that
- 6:46have position flexibility, but I would
- 6:48tell you priceless. Alex, on that
- 6:50similar note, I mean, how important is
- 6:52it to have guys with familiarity in this
- 6:54offense at other positions, particularly
- 6:56wide receiver? And I guess were those
- 6:58conversations maybe a little bit easier
- 6:59than some other guys in the portal? I
- 7:01know you've talked a lot about proof of
- 7:02concept. Those guys have had proof of
- 7:04concept within your offense. I guess
- 7:05what were those conversations like with
- 7:06them following you from your from your
- 7:08previous stop?
- 7:09>> Yeah, I think twofold. The the
- 7:13familiarity with the offense is
- 7:14absolutely huge. Um, to be honest with
- 7:17you, I think more than that, because
- 7:19you've got time, you can install an
- 7:21offense and we're going to evolve
- 7:22offensively because it's going to fit
- 7:24personnel and it's been that every year.
- 7:27I think just as important as that and
- 7:29honestly more important in a lot of ways
- 7:31is those guys coming in and and almost
- 7:34stamping the staff, stamping myself,
- 7:36stamping um several of the coaches, the
- 7:40strength staff, stamping those guys. And
- 7:42when I say stamping, the locker room
- 7:45controls the narrative of of the
- 7:47program, right? Like that's where guys
- 7:48either walk in and say, "Man, what the
- 7:50hell are we doing?" Or they walk in and
- 7:52and say, "Man, like I like what's going
- 7:54on in here." Well, you've got a
- 7:55foundation of guys that either which way
- 7:58that conversation goes, they can say,
- 8:01"Man, like, hey, give that guy a shot."
- 8:02And that's everything. That's not just
- 8:04the coaches. That's not the offensive
- 8:05scheme. It's the strength staff. It's
- 8:07sports medicine. It's nutrition. It's
- 8:09every part of the program that touches
- 8:11these guys. those guys can stand and I
- 8:14think more than anything that group of
- 8:16guys can can say hey listen like
- 8:18whatever this was here these guys are
- 8:22are about culture about relationships
- 8:27about development like these are real
- 8:29guys and when you can have somebody walk
- 8:30into a locker room especially guys that
- 8:33have played and have the respect of the
- 8:35guys around them I I think it it helps
- 8:37you gain credibility quicker helps you
- 8:38gain trust quicker and that's what this
- 8:40game is right now is it from a roster
- 8:42retention standpoint um amongst other
- 8:45things it truly is how fast can you
- 8:47build trust how fast can you build a
- 8:50relationship with the guys that that you
- 8:52haven't been around and and I think for
- 8:55the guys that stayed that chose to stay
- 8:58um like those guys perception of what
- 9:01college football is totally based on
- 9:03their relationships and their experience
- 9:05with previous staff has nothing to do
- 9:07with us and the guys that came with have
- 9:11you give you a level of credibility that
- 9:13you need to have to be able to go and
- 9:14build quickly.
