- 1:15our Carter Brown series Belladonna was poison. But here now is the Matter of
- 1:22Reasonable Doubt, Part five from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dellar.
- 1:30This is missus Grimley, mister Dollar. Oh good, I understand you were
- 1:34trying to reach me. I just told you, nephew Walter that if he
- 1:38didn't have you on this phone within three minutes, I'd be out there at
- 1:41the ranch with a pose police Oh, I'm afraid there's some mistake, mister
- 1:44Doller. You see, I told Walter I didn't wish to talk with you.
- 1:49You what. I admire your persistence, young man, But are you
- 1:53seeing this? If your own free will, you're not being forced? Ridiculous?
- 1:56Who's there with you? Just my nephew, Walter, his wife Hilda.
- 2:00Sure, I'm coming out there, missus Gramley, mister Dollar, you
- 2:04were sent out here from Hartford to investigate an insurance trust I was arranging for
- 2:07my granddaughter. Well, I've decided not to set up the trust, so
- 2:13there's no further reason to involve yourself in my affairs. Good night, mister
- 2:16Dollar. Hello, Hello, where have you got cooking with the Gramleys?
- 2:23Anyways? Shut up, Nikki, let me think toodnight and every weekday Night,
- 2:34Bob Bailey. In the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed
- 2:38Expense Accout America's fabulous freelance insurance Investigator, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. From
- 2:57Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location in Las Vegas to the home office Amicon Northern
- 3:01Trust Company, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the matter of Reasonable Doubts Expense account
- 3:07Final page, Item twelve seventy five cents. I had a pint of black
- 3:15coffee sent in for Nicki Vernon, girlfriend of missing casino operator Deuce McCoy.
- 3:21She'd been overworking a bottle of Scotch, and I figured the coffee would help
- 3:23clear the fumes, and it might have if she'd drunk it. No,
- 3:27take it away. I don't want any coffee. I couldn't figure that phone
- 3:34call from missus Greenway. She knew her nephew and his wife had been stealing
- 3:38from her, That's why she'd started to set up the trust to save the
- 3:40estate from them and turn it over to a young granddaughter, Susan. And
- 3:44she knew also. I've told her that Waller and his wife had probably contrived
- 3:46the auto accident that had killed Susan's parents. And yet now she seemed to
- 3:51have reversed her whole attitude. Maybe Jonas Parks had been right. Maybe there
- 3:55was a reasonable doubt as to a sanity, maybe a lot of things,
- 4:00But all of the answers were out there at that ranch. She's to blame
- 4:04for it. Things were all right with Deuce and meals she came messing around.
- 4:09If it hadn't been hild it it would have been somebody else. I'll
- 4:11lot you know about it. Oh, why don't you drink some of that
- 4:14coffee, Nicklas, I don't want to cough. Okay, okay, suit
- 4:16yourself, go ahead and enjoy your broken heart. Then kill the rest of
- 4:19that bottle. If that's what you want. Cry up a storm, live
- 4:23it up, wallow in it. I'll get that. Dame's the last thing
- 4:27I ever do for. What you want to thank her for getting that rat
- 4:30off your neck? What you have to turn him in for? Wos never
- 4:33did anything to you? You never had the chance. Oh what's he supposed
- 4:36to have done it? So hard? Well? What he tried to do?
- 4:39Oh? Sure you happen to know young Susan Grimley. Yeah, I've
- 4:44seen the kid. Why well, your lover boy phoned her out at the
- 4:46ranch earlier this evening disguise. His voice said he was a friend of mine.
- 4:50He tried to get her to meet him on the old Bowlder cutoff out
- 4:53of the middle of the desert. If you think Deuce would try to date
- 4:55up for a sixteen year old kid, you're crazy, Nikki. I think
- 5:00he was going to kill a sixteen year old kid. Her fault, Hilda
- 5:05gramly she and her sneaky little henpeck husband got Douce mixed up in something I
- 5:11don't imagine. He was very hard to mix. Dame's been asking for it
- 5:14for a long time, I know, and you're about ready to give it
- 5:16to her. Well forget it, sober up, find the nearest exit,
- 5:20and then run like the devil. I want deuce so to the police,
- 5:25and they're the ones who are going to get him. They're covering the airport
- 5:27now, the deepo, all the highways. Vegas is a tough town to
- 5:30get away from. He hasn't got a chance. Just as much your husband's
- 5:33fault. Why didn't he keep her home? Why did he? Oh,
- 5:35for the love of you, keep on playing that same old record, You're
- 5:39gonna wear a groove right through your brain. Maybe, so, look,
- 5:43I got things to do. You're gonna be all right here alone. I'm
- 5:46just fine. I never felt better in my life, and you've already got
- 5:49it halfway made. So why don't you double up and get even try some
- 5:53of that coffee. You're a real busy guy, mister dollar. You put
- 5:57the finger on a man with one hand, and it's the same time you
- 6:00try to soak up his girl with the other. Sure, and if I
- 6:02had a brumont sweep to the office, whether why don't you go be busy
- 6:05someplace else. That's exactly the idea. All right, kids, you're on
- 6:11your own. Good luck, Nikki, good luck. What do you care
- 6:15what guy of luck I have? Oh? I don't know. I picked
- 6:21up my car and drove out across the desert toward the front rock ranch.
- 6:26I couldn't quite imagine Missus Gramley being intimidated. The idea of Walter and Hilda
- 6:30standing over, holding a gun at her head and making her say things against
- 6:33her will was pretty unbelievable. Face with a threat like that, she'd probably
- 6:38say, shouldn't be blasted. It just didn't make sense. Apparently she really
- 6:43had reversed her field. But I had to hear it from her face to
- 6:46face. Johnny Dollar, open up, I said, open up. What's
- 7:04the idea? Missus Gremley told you to stay away from here, didn't she?
- 7:08No? No, there was static in the phone. I want to
- 7:10hear her say it again. You going on? If you're doing coming in
- 7:14all right, water, let's go talk to missus Gremley. Look, Dollar,
- 7:16you haven't got that much weight to throw. Aron, suppose we get
- 7:18it straight right now and save a lot of time. I came out here
- 7:21to talk to missus Gramley, and I'm gonna talk to her now. If
- 7:25you want to go out a ben knuckle, let's get started. Or if
- 7:28you're thinking of that gun routine again, go ahead and pull it. I'm
- 7:30packing one myself. And if you're not gonna make any kind of a move,
- 7:33and then you just stand right there with your face hanging out while I
- 7:36go on in and talk good eating Missus Gremley. Dollar won't take no for
- 7:41an answer. He just forced his way in. I'm glad to find you
- 7:44looking so well. I thought I'd made myself clear on the phone, mister
- 7:46Dollar. Really, come on, let's go on into the living room where
- 7:50we can all be more comfortable. Come back here, I must insist that
- 7:55you leave at once. Who wasn't the door? What are you doing here?
- 8:00Well, if it isn't Hilda, the lovely lady who likes money,
- 8:03gifts and excitement, fine, fine, that's why I came out to stir
- 8:09up a little excitement. I think you're taking a good deal upon yourself,
- 8:13mister Dalla. You know I'm a little surprised at you, Missus Greeley.
- 8:16I thought you wanted me to follow the case through. There is no case.
- 8:20Oh since when you heard what she said, that's what you came for,
- 8:22all right? Now beat it down, Walter, Missus Gremley, are
- 8:28you telling me you're going to drop this whole thing? Let this pair here
- 8:31edge you out and Susan along with you, and take the whole estate.
- 8:33You can put any interpretation on it you like, just as long as you
- 8:37leave this house at once, and please don't come back. You have no
- 8:41right to interfere. And what about your son and his wife? Have you
- 8:45forgotten that those two leeches there kill them? You're out of your mind?
- 8:48Am I? What do you think, Missus Greeley? Am I out of
- 8:52my mind? I'm I'm afraid you are. My son and his wife were
- 8:58killed in an automobile accident, A terrible tragedy, but unavoidable. Sure it
- 9:03was after Walter and Hilda here set it up. Will you please leave now?
- 9:07They threatened you? Is that it? Are you scared to talk?
- 9:09Because if you are speak up, I imagine I can handle them. You're
- 9:13being quite ridiculous, mister Dollar, will you now go please. It beats
- 9:16me, It really does if I hadn't all answer it. Hello. If
- 9:24that's for me, you better let me take it. They know I'm here,
- 9:28all right, take it. Nobody's stopping you. It was Will Connor's
- 9:35on the phone. He'd been keeping in close touch with the police, and
- 9:37he was calling to tell me what had happened. Deuce McCoy had been arrested.
- 9:41He'd been picked up at the airport trying to board a plane and was
- 9:45being taken to the city jail. I hung up the phone and told the
- 9:48three of them, what will it said? That touched off the fuse?
- 9:54Arrested? Deuce has been arrested the airport. I don't get it, but
- 9:58you will get it. While e Deuce will talk, he'll spill the whole
- 10:01thing, and I think we'll be able to make a case against you and
- 10:05Hildy even without Missus Gremley's testimony. Susan was she with him? Is she
- 10:09all right? Missus Gramley? Susan has been in my hotel room with Will
- 10:13Connors for the last so that was the hole they had over you. They
- 10:18told me this man Deuce had phoned her and tricked her into meeting him.
- 10:20Susan doesn't trick so easy. She called me in her hands up. Dollar.
- 10:24Oh no, it's a little late for a gun, Walter. You
- 10:28won't find it any easier to run the doucetead. He's right, Walter,
- 10:31Let me think it must Let you think. That's what I've been doing for
- 10:37the last ten years. And you thought us right into this at the airport.
- 10:41You know what he was doing. He was running out. The kid
- 10:43didn't show he knew something had gone wrong, and he was taking a potter
- 10:48and not even telling me. There's no time now, just here holding the
- 10:50bag. And now you say, let me think, why didn't you think
- 10:54before it was your idea cutting him in on this? She's got a lot
- 10:58of cute idea, Nicky, she's a real little brain. What the here,
- 11:05slumming, mister Dollar? The door was open, so I walked in.
- 11:09You mind, Look whoever you are, watchsucker. I've seen guns before.
- 11:13Why didn't you use it on them when they were playing you for their
- 11:16number one Patsy about Deuce McCoy and that little sneak you're married to there.
- 11:24I mean, you still don't know, don't you wish I was they had
- 11:28you right in the middle, sucker. Deuce was taking it away from me
- 11:31on the tables, and little Hildy was getting it back from him after hours.
- 11:37I bet they got a lot of laughs out of it. Better hand
- 11:39over that gunwater. It's true, isn't it. Hilda of course not take
- 11:46a gun to him. Huh. Well, maybe it's not too late,
- 11:48Walter. What are you going to do? Give me the gunwater? Sure?
- 12:00Why not? I don't need it now. He killed her, his
- 12:05own wife, right there and shut her down in cold blood. You call
- 12:09the police, Missuscreamy, Yeah, tell him to hurry right out. They
- 12:11can take me in on a real charge. Now, I didn't mean for
- 12:15her to get killed. You know something, dollar, No, suppose you
- 12:22tell me that's the first big move I've made in the last ten years,
- 12:28And Hilda didn't plan. Expense account I am fourteen three hundred and five dollars
- 12:37and twenty cents hotel and incidentals in Las Vegas and transportation back to Hartford expense
- 12:41a count total five hundred and ninety six dollars and forty five cents. End
- 12:45of account remarks, Well, I can't figure out why she had to go
- 12:48messing around that way when she already had a man of her own, her
- 12:52husband. Of course, he didn't amount too much, but not many men
- 12:54do. Would you expect to find in this world pearls and all the oysters
- 13:00a turkey in her soup? Well that was nicky, and that's the report,
- 13:05man, That's life. To think of it, though, what isn't
- 13:11yours truly? Johnny Dollar? Now here's our star to tell you about next
- 13:28week's intriguing story. Next week, Indestructible Mike, the most amazing character I
- 13:33ever met, a man with nine lives. At least join us, won't
- 13:37you yours truly, Johnny Dollar? Yours truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey.

- 14:16Night, same time and station for another exciting story of yours truly, Johnny
- 14:20Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking Carter Brown Mystery Adventures in Excitement and Suspense, based
- 16:17on the best selling novels by the slick storytelling sensation Carter Brown. Any actor
- 16:37worth is sould is generally nervous before performances do to begin, but this performance
- 16:41was something extra special. So with the butterflies in my stomach. Because this
- 16:45program of There's No Future in Murder, which starred me rock Stone as television's
- 16:49inspector. Rock Stone, was going to be devoted to disclosing the murder of
- 16:52Hannah Vogue. I hope that was my only part of the show had been
- 16:57planned the early part. The rest of it had to be an impromptu affair,
- 17:02with me in charge and with music improvised from the orchestra whenever I gave
- 17:06the signals. The signal was to be each time I sketched my ear.
- 17:10I only hope the viewers wouldn't think their favorite carp had suddenly gone deaf.
- 17:15Ten seconds, everybody quiet. I watched our sponsor old As Lacey, bracing
- 17:21himself as he faced number one camera. The orchestra leaders stood with his bat
- 17:23or raised as a second sticked away. Then the show's underway, as the
- 17:33music had its familiar theme. I knew the title cards would be flashing under
- 17:37the screens of a million TV sets. I mentally crossed my fingers. My
- 17:44name is Oldest Lacy. I have the privilege to night of introducing a special
- 17:48program of There's No Future in Murder. As sponsor of this series, Lacey's
- 17:53Departmental Store is proud to align itself with just disloving people everywhere in an effort
- 18:00to solve a terrible crime, the murder of Hannafold, whose body was found
- 18:04in our special display window last Thursday morning. From then on things went smoothly.
- 18:11This was the part that had been planned reversed. Autographs flashed under the
- 18:15screen of the window with the body in it. I did my commentary and
- 18:18hurried over to Set one to reenact the finding of the body with Arlene Moldon
- 18:22and Sheep, the storm manager. Then I scratched my ear for the orchestra
- 18:26leader while the orchestra added some grim ominous music. I raced over the camera
- 18:34outside Set two, Inspector Rockstone's office and faced it ready for the red light.
- 18:45Ladies and gentlemen, you've seen the discovery of the body of Hannah Fog
- 18:49in my office, which I shall enter. In a moment. A group
- 18:52of people have been gathered, I shall interview them. You've seen me do
- 18:56this many times, but I asked you to remember that to night. I
- 19:00am not an actor playing a role. I am a man, a citizen
- 19:03trying to solve the murder of a beautiful girl. I am really you,
- 19:07a part of you. I am a conscience yours and mine, the conscience
- 19:14of a city raising its voice to the man that justice should be done and
- 19:17the evildo are brought to a reckoning. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 19:25all know what has happened. I am going to question you about the murder
- 19:29of Hannah Vogue. I know I have already asked you many questions in the
- 19:32last few days, but this time I shall be asking them in an effort
- 19:34to build up a pack a picture of Hannahvogue's life, and perhaps because of
- 19:38that, a picture of her death, of why she had to die.
- 19:44Westley, mister Lacy, me you are oldest Lacy managing director of Lacy's departmental
- 19:48store. Of course I am you knew the deceased Hannah Vogue. Yes,
- 19:53I know. How much were you paying a month for the rental of her
- 19:56part. There is no point in hiding this, mister Lacy. You freely
- 20:00admitted to me in your office that you had been interested in the girl,
- 20:03oh much two hundred dollars a month. You knew she was an unsuccessful actress.
- 20:07Yes, did you order Sam Long, the writer of the series,
- 20:11to see she was engaged for one of the shows? I don't see.
- 20:14Please answer the question, mister Lacy. Well, I suppose if a man
- 20:17sponsors the show. What's wrong with seeing that someone's interested in? Get to
- 20:21chain nothing? Mister Lacey, did you think there was the night before her
- 20:25body was found in the window Wednesday night? Did you see her that night?
- 20:30We had dinner and then she had to leave. You didn't go with
- 20:33her? No? Thank you, Miss Shaw. Please. Yes, Inspector
- 20:37Stone, your name is Lowash Shaw and you were a friend of Hannah Hold.
- 20:41That's correct. You were staying at her apartment the night before the murder?
- 20:45Yes, I was. When did you last see her alive? That
- 20:48evening? She left about six thirty. She said she was going to dinner.
- 20:52She never came back. Thank you, miss Shaw. Mister Lacy,
- 20:56this girl was living in an apartment rented by you, knew you very well,
- 21:00well enough to realize you had a secret. He found out that secret
- 21:06when you discovered she found out I. I had no secret. I had
- 21:08nothing to be ashamed of till we kept hiden, didn't ju Lacy? Suppose
- 21:12I would remind you of an investment you made a year ago, a short
- 21:15term investment with high returned, an investment placed in the hands of Tony Saguera
- 21:19advised her to a group of men commonly known as the Syndicate, an investment
- 21:25with no papers signed and paid back to you capital and interest only last month.
- 21:30Wasn't that what you wanted? Kept quiet that a supposedly respectable businessman like
- 21:34you had invested money in the Syndicate? Well, why should I want to
- 21:37keep it quiet? Come, come, mister Lacy. Even a child has
- 21:40some idea of what the name syndicate means. Today? That was your secret,
- 21:45wasn't it? The secret? Had of old discovered the secret which cost
- 21:48her her life? I didn't kill her. I didn't kill her. Oh
- 21:52A few questions for mister Long. Okay, you are Sam Long, the
- 21:56writer of There's No Future in Murder? That's right. Wasn't Hannah Vogue the
- 22:00name your wife used as an actress. Yeah, but you and your wife
- 22:04quarreled and she left you some time ago. Why because I wouldn't chisel her
- 22:10apart on this program, That's why. And then some months later, Lazy
- 22:12ordered you to find her a part in the show. Yeah, me,
- 22:15the guy she was married to who lost her because he wouldn't do just that.
- 22:18Did you ever see your wife again? Once? Last Tuesday night,
- 22:23after last week's show, he came to see me. Told me she'd found
- 22:27out something about Lazy, but she was afraid. He knew she'd found out.
- 22:32She asked me for advice, said she was scared, and what did
- 22:33you do? And what did you tell her to do? She was still
- 22:37my wife. He'd drawn out on me. She was living in an apartment
- 22:41paid for by another man. He got him to get her into the program,
- 22:44and then she came running back to me and asked me what she should
- 22:47do. I told her to get out of my apartment and never come back.
- 22:49That's what I told her to do. That was the last time I
- 22:53saw her. A line I see. Thank you, oh mister sheep.
- 22:59Yes, inspector, you are the manager of Lacey's departmental store. Yes,
- 23:03yeah, that's right, inspector, mister Sheep. When you helped mister Lacy
- 23:07carry the corpse into the stall window, did you take the head of the
- 23:10feet? Well, mister Sheep, Oh, the shame of it. I've
- 23:15worked for the Laceis for thirty years. I've never had anything but respect and
- 23:19admiration and loyalty for them. He swore to me he hadn't killed her,
- 23:23but if the body were found in his apartment or his car, it would
- 23:26have been ruined for him, for the store, all the employees. I
- 23:30had to help him for their sake. So you broke open the steel shutter
- 23:33on one of the loading docks to get in. No, No, that
- 23:34that was only to pull the police. We use my keys. I knew
- 23:38where the watch them would be. It wasn't hard to avoid them. Oh
- 23:42the shame of it, yes, mister Sheep. The shame of it when
- 23:45honor citizens stand a crime. But I noticed the shame is only felt when
- 23:49you're caught. I'd like to make a statement, if I may, Yes,
- 23:53Michare, go ahead. You must be wondering in speaker Stone just where
- 23:57I fit into all this. I have been puzzled by it. Mashare my
- 24:02real name is Lois Berkenshaw, and for the last three years I've been employed
- 24:06by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You're an FBI agent. Yes. The
- 24:11Bureau has long suspected that prominent businessmen all over the country were investing money in
- 24:15the local organizations of the syndicate. This practice was not only a moral but
- 24:19near criminal, was also defrauding the inland revenue of taxation on the profits.
- 24:25I'm one of the agents whose task it was to obtain evidence of this in
- 24:29the hope of standing out the practice. So that's how you knew about Kathy,
- 24:33Yes, miss Maldon. That's how I was able to furnish Inspector Stone
- 24:36with the details of mister Lacy's dealings with the syndicates through mister Seguera. It
- 24:40was part of your job to get close to the syndicate. Yes, and
- 24:42I also became friendly with Hannah Vogue in an attempt to pin the charge on
- 24:47all the slaty. Thank you, Miss Berkenshaw. I would better clear up
- 24:52something with Miss Maldon. Yes, Inspector you are Aline Mauldon, the producer
- 24:55of the show. Yes, the name you mentioned a moment ago, Kathy
- 24:59was the the name of your sister, who has recently found drowned in San
- 25:02Antonio. That's right, isn't it? The fact that your sister had been
- 25:04living under the protection of oldest Lacey. Yes, what right had You'd thrown
- 25:08her over? And she wrote your letter saying she knew something about him and
- 25:11intended to make him pay for it. Yes, you destroyed that letter and
- 25:15said nothing about it in the coroner's court for lack of proof and to avoid
- 25:18scandal. That's correct. No, it's a lie, you which, you
- 25:21lying devil. Take it easy, Lacy. You're going to need all your
- 25:23strength for the trial, all right. It's true. Part of it.
- 25:26Kathy did find out about the money I'd put into the syndicate. I killed
- 25:30her. I was desperate. We went swimming and I held the head under
- 25:33the water. But when I got back here I had a visit from her
- 25:34sister, from Arlie Marlen with the copy of a letter from Kathy giving her
- 25:38the story. What you didn't destroy the letters, and you didn't tell me
- 25:42about the most important one because she wanted to use it for blackmail. I've
- 25:47been paying her a thousand dollars a month to keep her from showing that letter
- 25:49to the San Antonio Polle. It's a lie, it's a fantasy. I
- 25:52never took a set from him my life. The account is in the Carli
- 25:55branch in a different Port bank and the name of Arlan Strike. What about
- 25:57Hannah Vaul she found out too. Finally went out of my mind. I
- 26:00couldn't kill again, but I couldn't afford to pay two lots of blackmail.
- 26:04I told Ali Mouldens. She'll laugh that, call me a spineless weekly.
- 26:07He's making it up. He killed head of Bog and he's trying to fix
- 26:11it on you. You won't get out of it like that. You told
- 26:12me to bring her over to your apartment that Wednesday night. You made me
- 26:15make an excuse to leave her for half an hour. When I came back,
- 26:18Hannah was dead. You poisoned her. That's when you got cheap to
- 26:22help. You put the body in the window before thinking you a better way
- 26:23of disposing on it. Yes, I wish I did, mister Lacy,
- 26:30I prophesy you'll get your wish and Miss Moulden will be right alongside you.
- 26:34That's ridiculous. He got no proof. Lacy's lying his head off. I
- 26:37don't think so, and that letter he spoke of, the copy which you
- 26:41showed him must still exist in the original and the police will find it.
- 26:47And I think, ladies and gentlemen of our audience, is the finish of
- 26:49this program. There's no future in murder. I have only one announcement to
- 26:55make. I said before that I was an actor man who's conch was part
- 27:00of your conscience, those of you who are watching me now, this program
- 27:04was brought to you tonight by your own faith and honesty, sponsored by your
- 27:08pride in your city and its people. Something like this program tonight can happen,
- 27:14and does Oursidy is a good place to live in. Good Night.
- 27:22I nodded to the awkard to leader for the closing theme music of the show,
- 27:26and suddenly the police appeared, would Inspector Jakes in charge, and Arlene,
- 27:30Lacy and Sheep were taken off, and Sam was at my elbow.
- 27:33Nice work, Rock. He wrote a good script and off the cut better
- 27:36than I could have done. Now it was a colossal show. Yeah,
- 27:40hey, don't you realize what I've done. I've just sent my sponsor to
- 27:42the electric chair. I wouldn't worry too much about that. If those phones
- 27:47aren't running hot with prospective news sponsors. I'll go back to writing copy for
- 27:49commercial. Hey, I never thought of that. Now, what do you
- 27:52know? Arleen always wanted this show to get top rating, and it took
- 27:56a murder. She committed herself to do it. This is Carter Brown.
- 28:07Well, I guess after that story, nobody's going to want me to write
- 28:10for TV. But you know, I agree with my hero. There's no
- 28:12future in murder except in writing about it. And it's fun too. I'll
- 28:17be back again with another story for you, Court Hazard in Hong Kong,
- 28:19and the hero's name is Turney Masters, or at least that's the name he
- 28:22finds himself settled with. If you're listening, you'll find out why. Meanwhile,
- 28:26this is Carter Brown saying so long for now be singing in Belladonna was
- 28:47poison? You heard our star Frank Waters as Rock Spoke, A Carter Brown
- 28:51mystery theater based on the best selling novels by Carter Brown, is dramatized and
- 28:55directed by Morris Travers for Grace Gibson's Radio Productions. Welcome Back. Well,
- 29:07I kind of figured from the get go with her hesitation that the whole reason
- 29:15the grandmother was trying to call Johnny off was because of the granddaughter that I
- 29:21think would be the only thing that would really get her scared. I definitely
- 29:26missed having the granddaughter in the episode. She was the highlight of the whole
- 29:30serial, but I understand the way that it worked out. Still, the
- 29:37granddaughter would have been nice to have her. I also thought it was interesting
- 29:41to have Nicky kind of deliver the closing lesson to the story. While she
- 29:48wasn't a particularly nice person, she was a little bit more normal and a
- 29:52little wiser than the main character's Johnny encountered in the rest of the story.
- 30:00All Right, well, now it's time for us to take a listen to
- 30:06Belladonna was poisoned part for Welcome Back. So our story comes to a close,
- 30:17and I have to admit that this was probably my least favorite of the
- 30:22Carter Brown stories so far. I think the concept was interesting, but that's
- 30:30really about as far as it went. The way they kind of brought it
- 30:36about it was a little ludicrous, but that could have worked. Often the
- 30:41Carter Brown mysteries have had somewhat have had someone over the top conclusions which,
- 30:49while not dramatically perfect or certainly interesting, to listen to this one, it
- 30:56just felt like the end it was just kind of a light down the wave
- 31:03that it came through. A lot of things just stand up not making sense.
- 31:07The big thing is that with both the producer and the sponsor connected to
- 31:17the murder, both of these people were the ones that approved the special episode,
- 31:23which raises a big question as to why they would do that. Now,
- 31:30there are two possibilities. I think it'd be fair for them to expect
- 31:36that rock Stone would not capture them, But if that didn't happen, then
- 31:42it would be a pretty big embarrassment for their series when their brands in which
- 31:48they're invested. If, on the other hand, he somehow managed to catch
- 31:52them, well, it would be the death penalty. So why do you
- 31:57go ahead and encourage and act like it's a good idea? But beyond that,
- 32:05you know, and to me, it may just be the radio adaptation
- 32:07of the Carter Brown Mystery. Since we don't really have the book handy,
- 32:15we can't really judge whether it was a bad book from the start or just
- 32:19poorly adapted. But poorly adapted in the sense that, unlike other characters,
- 32:27we didn't really get a feel for what this guy was about. You know,
- 32:30there's a lot that could have been done dramatically and comedically with this actor
- 32:37having to play a detective the role that he actually played on TV. In
- 32:44the end, we just don't get any of that. But hopefully we'll do
- 32:46better with our next serial, which will actually be the one they announced next
- 32:52week, We'll bring you The Lady was Lethal. Now we turn to listener
- 32:57comments and feedback, and I have a review of the iTunes app by Brian
- 33:04hates Ducks in the iTunes Store. Great app. I love old time radio
- 33:08detective shows, and Adam's hosting is a perfect compliment to them. Not many
- 33:13of my friends or people I association with like old time radio like I do.
- 33:17Adam almost makes me feel like I have a body to talk to about
- 33:22them with. Well, thanks so much, And I think that's definitely one
- 33:25of the benefits of the hosting because so few people remember this or remember it
- 33:34to the same degree. You know, some people have memories of the Shadow,
- 33:42you know, just vague cultural references of that, but all the other
- 33:46things, mister Moto, a life in your hands forget, and Johnny Doller
- 33:55hard to find. So I'm glad that we've got the Facebook page, and
- 34:00we also just have the show so we can kind of connect together and enjoy
- 34:05them together. Thanks so much for the comment, Brian. And finally we
- 34:09have a comment on podcast only. Great show and great host who has a
- 34:15lot to the shows. Well, thanks so much. All right, well
- 34:19that will do it for today. Join us back here on Monday when we
- 34:24start another Johnny Dollar Cereal Friday. We begin The Lady Was Lethal, which
- 34:30will hopefully be better than this week, and then then be sure and listen
- 34:37tomorrow as we bring you the line up. In the meantime, send your
- 34:39comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectors dot net, follow us on Twitter,
- 34:44Radio Detectors, and become one of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com.
