- 0:01Speaker 1: I was so excited that you'll be touring Australia next week.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Are there any special.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Memories of Australia for you being here before.
- 0:10Speaker 3: With the RTIV Band? I think the first show we played,
- 0:14Speaker 3: the reaction was it was like, oh, it was like
- 0:20Speaker 3: it was like.
- 0:22Speaker 4: It was. It unnerved me. It really did. Said these
- 0:27Speaker 4: people know about you. I mean, these people know about me,
- 0:29Speaker 4: and I mean I heard I heard like a lot
- 0:33Speaker 4: of fan mail, a lot of a lot of good, great,
- 0:35Speaker 4: lovely people calling me and say, you're not going to
- 0:37Speaker 4: believe it. I go, I'm not going to believe it.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I go, well, I gotta be honest with you. I
- 0:41Speaker 4: didn't believe it, but I believed it when I when I.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Felt I felt that intensity from you know, I go,
- 0:47Speaker 3: these people love this music and they've had all this time,
- 0:51Speaker 3: all these years to appreciate this music. You know, my
- 0:54Speaker 3: six records with the band, and they're like, you're.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Not going to believe it. I go, you're not gonna
- 1:00Speaker 4: believe it when you Yeah, especially when you go to Melbourne.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I mean, like all the others, all the other places
- 1:08Speaker 4: were amazing, but Melbourne was just I don't know, I
- 1:13Speaker 4: don't even know what I don't even know what to
- 1:15Speaker 4: say about that, but so I'm looking forward to, uh,
- 1:21Speaker 4: we're looking forward to an amazing four days. And you know, yeah,
- 1:28Speaker 4: that's it's nothing that could be thrown at us, will
- 1:32Speaker 4: hurt us.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I promise you that's right.
- 1:35Speaker 1: After so long of doing it as well, I'm sure.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And look, sign Up the Hammer is such a powerful,
- 1:41Speaker 1: era defining album. What's something about the writing or recording
- 1:44Speaker 1: process of that record that fans might not know?
- 1:49Speaker 4: Well, let me tell you the story of signing The Hammer,
- 1:51Speaker 4: which I've been telling you to a lot of the
- 1:53Speaker 4: people wanting to know. When Man World, we would always
- 1:59Speaker 4: record more music than we had then then we needed.
- 2:04Speaker 4: So when we went into Phase one studios in Toronto
- 2:07Speaker 4: to record Hell to England, we recorded a lot of
- 2:11Speaker 4: extra tracks like we did during Battle Hands and every
- 2:15Speaker 4: every time we got to a studio, because we would
- 2:17Speaker 4: think we might never have the opportunity again to be
- 2:21Speaker 4: in another studio like this, so as long as the
- 2:23Speaker 4: tapes were rolling, we recorded. So we we recorded I
- 2:30Speaker 4: think seven.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Songs, a lot of extra songs, and then because we
- 2:34Speaker 3: thought that something was gonna happen if we would get signed,
- 2:37Speaker 3: so then all of a sudden, we got this interest
- 2:41Speaker 3: from ten Records DMI in UK and.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Next thing we know, we got signed to ten Records
- 2:51Speaker 4: em I. But then we needed more songs. We needed
- 2:55Speaker 4: for a release, We needed more tunes. So what we
- 2:58Speaker 4: did was we we went into the uh.
- 3:00Speaker 3: The Virgin it's called the Manor Manora Studio, which was
- 3:05Speaker 3: William the Conqueror or something lunch and it was unbelievable,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I mean, and it was redone into a studio to
- 3:14Speaker 3: a really beautiful studio and we stayed, I stayed in
- 3:17Speaker 3: the stateroom where William the Conqueror I mean, and once
- 3:22Speaker 3: I mean all the yeah, and it was like you
- 3:26Speaker 3: book your book the Manor, and like if you wanted
- 3:28Speaker 3: a steak Virgin Records, if we wanted to stake at
- 3:31Speaker 3: four in the morning.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Good, we got it. You know, we're paying, We paid
- 3:38Speaker 4: for it, you know.
- 3:38Speaker 3: So yeah, it wasn't free, but uh it was great
- 3:44Speaker 3: and we had wonderful people there and great studio and
- 3:47Speaker 3: it was like when you think, when you think about
- 3:50Speaker 3: something like that, the excesses of what it what it
- 3:54Speaker 3: could be.
- 3:55Speaker 4: That's how it was.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you know when Richard, when Richard Ransom through a
- 4:00Speaker 3: party Wow.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I can only imagine.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And what was it like for you, being so young
- 4:10Speaker 1: at the time too, to just all of a sudden experience.
- 4:14Speaker 4: That well, you know, I've been in music for a
- 4:17Speaker 4: long time before that, I had the Dictators and uh
- 4:21Speaker 4: four major labels and but but but Man of War.
- 4:25Speaker 4: That was just an incredible period between.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Between Hail to England and signing a ham and when
- 4:31Speaker 3: we got that contract, it.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Was just fun. It's a lot of fun.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, And this tool features an incredible lineup. How did
- 4:42Speaker 1: this particular group of musicians come together and what kind
- 4:45Speaker 1: of chemistry have you found between people on stage?
- 4:48Speaker 4: All right, So when you want to do an interview,
- 4:51Speaker 4: you're gonna you hear every musician say.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Oh, this is the best, and this is this, this
- 4:55Speaker 3: is you know they it's just a bunch of bunch
- 4:59Speaker 3: of bullshit, you know.
- 5:00Speaker 4: But let me tell you something.
- 5:01Speaker 3: This RTV band, I think it's the best version of
- 5:06Speaker 3: this band that's ever been.
- 5:07Speaker 4: I think we have Dirk Schocker on bass and he's
- 5:13Speaker 4: he plays in a Gamma Ray. Yeah, he's from Gamma
- 5:20Speaker 4: Ray and Advantage and he's a great, great player, great great player,
- 5:26Speaker 4: and he has embraced all that eight string four string insanity.
- 5:31Speaker 3: That Joey played. I mean he does that perfectly. I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 3: I mean I close my eyes and this guy, this
- 5:38Speaker 3: guy is doing it, you know, and he's doing it and.
- 5:41Speaker 4: To effect and the great Seawan Elg who was in
- 5:46Speaker 4: a band before, and then KK KK.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Downing stall and then I stole him back because KK
- 5:54Speaker 3: is not KK is not playing this year, and I
- 5:56Speaker 3: started kk's come back because they had k We had
- 6:01Speaker 3: KK jam with us at blood Stock. We can, right,
- 6:07Speaker 3: and it's all on YouTube and uh so, so Sean
- 6:12Speaker 3: is Shawn is a drums on with me, Mark, Sean
- 6:14Speaker 3: and Dirk. It's it's a it's a really powerful band,
- 6:17Speaker 3: I gotta tell you yeah. And I think people are
- 6:21Speaker 3: going to be really blown away with this. And you
- 6:25Speaker 3: know they're gonna be blown away at the precision, yeah, and.
- 6:28Speaker 4: The power of the whole thing, you know. And it's
- 6:31Speaker 4: it's really fun to play.
- 6:32Speaker 3: It's fun to I'd love to be in the audience
- 6:34Speaker 3: to see it, but I have to play.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Oh no. It really is like all these powerhouses just
- 6:41Speaker 1: coming together and creating something.
- 6:43Speaker 2: As you said, with Precision, it's amazing.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's a good it's a real cool band.
- 6:47Speaker 4: It's a good band.
- 6:48Speaker 3: It's and it's not a it's not a hype band.
- 6:51Speaker 4: It's not one of these bands it goes they're all
- 6:53Speaker 4: superstar just superstar band. Now, now you're not if any
- 7:00Speaker 4: had that opportunity to call upselves that as us and
- 7:02Speaker 4: we're not so you know, yeah, we're just coming on
- 7:08Speaker 4: and we're.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Gonna melts and faces.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Knock people's heads up.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, we can't wait.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And if you could go back and give yourself one
- 7:18Speaker 1: piece of advice during your manner war era, what would
- 7:21Speaker 1: it be and why?
- 7:23Speaker 4: Uh my, my? My advice would have been to be
- 7:27Speaker 4: harder on Joey, hard harder on my partner, not fucking
- 7:34Speaker 4: you know, not just just just insisting I will. I
- 7:37Speaker 4: insisted on doing things a lot different, you know.
- 7:41Speaker 3: You know, because I was the kind of guy that
- 7:43Speaker 3: I you know, we were we were fifty to fifty
- 7:45Speaker 3: partners in the band, and it was like when you know,
- 7:48Speaker 3: I was like, I don't want to.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Fight with this motherfucker. I don't want to fight. I
- 7:51Speaker 4: don't want to I don't want you know, I just
- 7:53Speaker 4: don't have any patience for him, you know, I don't
- 7:55Speaker 4: want to do it, you know, it's like, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 4: it was like, you know, sometimes I like, you know
- 8:01Speaker 4: a lot of people that's not worth it. I would
- 8:04Speaker 4: I should have been different.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I should have I should have been a lot harder
- 8:07Speaker 3: on him. That's fair enough, because because I was a
- 8:10Speaker 3: fifty we were partners, That's right.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Sometimes Yeah, like I guess, do you wish you had
- 8:17Speaker 1: put your foot down more and not been so dismissive
- 8:19Speaker 1: of the whole thing?
- 8:20Speaker 3: And just you know, when when I when I heard
- 8:23Speaker 3: something that was embarrassing or I saw an embarrassing picture,
- 8:27Speaker 3: I said, you got to take that fucking down, take
- 8:29Speaker 3: that fucking picture down. I don't want to be you know,
- 8:31Speaker 3: I don't want to be displayed like that, or you know,
- 8:33Speaker 3: I don't want to be known for that.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I don't want to you know, you know. And it
- 8:36Speaker 4: was like, you know, a lot of that stuff, you know,
- 8:39Speaker 4: And I just at one point, I just fucking threw
- 8:42Speaker 4: my hands up and I said, yeah, well.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You know what, sometimes things happen for a reason, and
- 8:50Speaker 1: you're where you are today and you get to tour
- 8:53Speaker 1: with RTB, Like, yeah, if that's something positive you can
- 8:56Speaker 1: take away from it.
- 8:58Speaker 3: It is positive. But but you know what I should
- 9:00Speaker 3: have been. I should have been a little more firm
- 9:02Speaker 3: with him. I really should have been.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, And how has your approach to playing guitar change
- 9:10Speaker 1: since recording Sign of the Hammer back in eighty four.
- 9:14Speaker 4: You know what, I've been playing guitar for so it
- 9:17Speaker 4: really hasn't a had. It doesn't change, you know. I
- 9:20Speaker 4: am a simple blues guitar player and and and that's
- 9:23Speaker 4: what I am. And when I when I go to pick,
- 9:26Speaker 4: when I picked the guitar up, the first thing I'm
- 9:28Speaker 4: playing is you know, blues legs and you know, and
- 9:32Speaker 4: then then I go through my fucking warm up and
- 9:35Speaker 4: I you know, I do. But basically, deep down in heart,
- 9:38Speaker 4: deep down in my heart, I'm bb King and Albert
- 9:41Speaker 4: King and Freddie King's son.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah we did. And I heard you started on violin
- 9:47Speaker 2: as well.
- 9:48Speaker 4: I did. I did, actually I did. It was actually
- 9:51Speaker 4: piano and piano, and then I couldn't take it anymore.
- 9:55Speaker 4: And because I wanted to be outside being a knucklehead, yeah,
- 9:59Speaker 4: which I shouldn't have been. And then when I got
- 10:01Speaker 4: to junior school, middle school, it was you know, violin
- 10:07Speaker 4: for the orchestra, and I moved up really quick from
- 10:10Speaker 4: from the back of the orchestra to the front of
- 10:12Speaker 4: the orchestra in about three weeks. And then my teacher said,
- 10:16Speaker 4: you know your your musical optitude.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Is off the charts. Wow, they told me that. So
- 10:22Speaker 3: I said, yeah, I know, I had already taken the test.
- 10:26Speaker 4: I knew it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And then you went straight to guitar, obviously.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Taking the guitar, and then you know, at one summer
- 10:36Speaker 4: it was amazing. One summer that I was it was
- 10:38Speaker 4: like the albums. The three albums that really destroyed me
- 10:41Speaker 4: was Jimmy Hendricks or Are you Experienced Cream?
- 10:45Speaker 3: Israeli Gears and the first led Zeppelin record. So I
- 10:49Speaker 3: had those three records suggest state in me that whole summer.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Then I was up there working at the camp being
- 10:55Speaker 3: a dishboy. And then by the end of that summer
- 10:58Speaker 3: I was a different person. I was a different guitar
- 11:01Speaker 3: player when I went home.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Gee, it's funny because I can hear a lot of
- 11:06Speaker 1: led Zep in man or War as well.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Were they some of the inspirations for you guys?
- 11:12Speaker 1: Of course, Well that's great to hear.
- 11:17Speaker 2: What about nowadays? Is there any new bands.
- 11:20Speaker 1: That you really enjoy, really like that are inspirations for
- 11:23Speaker 1: you not much.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I'm sure they're out there. I'm not going to be
- 11:29Speaker 3: like a dickhead and say there's no new band. I'm
- 11:33Speaker 3: sure there are plenty of great new bands out there.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I just haven't had that. I don't.
- 11:37Speaker 4: I don't have the wherewithal well I do. If I
- 11:42Speaker 4: wanted to listen to new bands, I could, but I don't. Yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 4: and I'm not saying that I don't, but I just don't.
- 11:49Speaker 4: I'm sure they're out there, but I don't know. I
- 11:53Speaker 4: just don't have any patience for the new music.
- 11:56Speaker 2: You know, do you know what?
- 11:57Speaker 1: It's actually pretty common A lot of people I speak to,
- 12:00Speaker 1: They're like, I just stick with the classics, And I
- 12:02Speaker 1: don't blame you.
- 12:03Speaker 3: You know, why are you trying to tell me that
- 12:07Speaker 3: there's a band that could put out a better record,
- 12:10Speaker 3: a better live record than the Who's the Who Live?
- 12:12Speaker 4: It leads.
- 12:15Speaker 2: No pasting point.
- 12:18Speaker 4: No, you can't, it's not it hasn't been done, you know.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Or Or are you trying to tell me a band
- 12:23Speaker 3: that can put out more of a you know, something
- 12:27Speaker 3: better than ISRAELI gives more artistic than that, or more
- 12:32Speaker 3: brutal than Hendrick's.
- 12:33Speaker 4: You know, I don't think so.
- 12:35Speaker 2: No, No, I think you're right.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Sorry, you're offering VIP meet and greets on this toour
- 12:47Speaker 1: What's the strangest or coolest thing someone's ever asked you
- 12:50Speaker 1: to sign?
- 12:52Speaker 4: Body parts?
- 12:54Speaker 1: Oh gosh, can you elaborate or not?
- 12:59Speaker 3: I would other than not, but you can imagine. I've
- 13:02Speaker 3: been I've signed some interesting spaces.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Oh jeez.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And many fans say Man of War's music as a
- 13:13Speaker 1: form of mythology. Were there any specific mythological or literary
- 13:18Speaker 1: influences behind Sign of the Hammer that you personally connected to.
- 13:22Speaker 4: That's an amazing question, great question, thank you. Man of
- 13:28Speaker 4: War was extremely influenced by Richard waer mm and I
- 13:33Speaker 4: mean it's being really influenced by Wagner and all those
- 13:41Speaker 4: symphonies and all those movements talking about the gods and
- 13:46Speaker 4: Valhalla all that. We took that pretty seriously. We did.
- 13:52Speaker 3: We took it seriously, and people looked at us like
- 13:56Speaker 3: we're a bunch of assholes. They go, okay, all right, whatever,
- 14:00Speaker 3: that's okay, all right, okay, a bunch of you know,
- 14:03Speaker 3: suppose he was what are you in the X City punk?
- 14:05Speaker 3: I go, yeah, but this is this is something different.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I go, you have to understanding. You have to stiff
- 14:10Speaker 3: yourself into that situation, you know, and we were like
- 14:14Speaker 3: extremely influenced by Vogen.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, it's so cool. It's really is.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I think you guys were like one of the sort
- 14:23Speaker 1: of first pioneers to do the tap into that fantasy
- 14:27Speaker 1: sort of you know, talking about swords and everything, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: it is really.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Cool, dimister Sanger and Valkyrie and just a lot of stuff,
- 14:39Speaker 4: and was loved it, you know.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah, wicked And looking back, was there a moment when
- 14:47Speaker 1: you realized your work with Manner War was going to
- 14:49Speaker 1: become iconic or did it take years to fully say
- 14:52Speaker 1: that legacy?
- 14:54Speaker 3: You know, I knew the band was was. I knew
- 14:56Speaker 3: that battle Hands started something. Yeah, uh, and I knew
- 15:01Speaker 3: it was. It wasn't for everybody, and it still isn't.
- 15:04Speaker 3: But I mean I think that battle Ham's just created this.
- 15:10Speaker 4: You know.
- 15:11Speaker 3: This, no this just so people get this uplifting feeling
- 15:17Speaker 3: from listening to that. So those records and you say,
- 15:22Speaker 3: I'm getting like so much like sand Mail, you saved
- 15:25Speaker 3: my life, you you you changed my life?
- 15:29Speaker 4: You know I hear that? WHOA what the fuck? I get?
- 15:36Speaker 4: I got the other day because I was close to
- 15:38Speaker 4: suicide and I started listening to you and like you've
- 15:42Speaker 4: changed my life and thank you for saving my life.
- 15:44Speaker 5: You know, when you hear that, it's like, yeah, I
- 15:50Speaker 5: don't know what to say, but speechless, I'm just crying.
- 15:52Speaker 5: It makes me cry, It'll make me It's just it
- 15:55Speaker 5: tears me up because I'm not that strong.
- 15:57Speaker 4: I mean, men crying.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Amazing that you have that influence on people.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yeah, people, I was going to kill myself. My life sucked.
- 16:09Speaker 3: And then they said, then I gained, I gained strength,
- 16:12Speaker 3: I gain power, I gain I gain courage. I gained
- 16:17Speaker 3: you know, it makes you cry. Now, it's a hard
- 16:23Speaker 3: it's a hard thing too, it is.
- 16:26Speaker 2: You know, as musicians you must get that quite a lot.
- 16:29Speaker 1: People really telling you all about themselves and where they're
- 16:35Speaker 1: at in life.
- 16:35Speaker 2: It's a lot to carry for a musician.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I mean, the last time I was in Australia, someone
- 16:41Speaker 4: came to me, goes, right in front of the whole crowd, goes.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I was if it wasn't for you, I'd be dead.
- 16:51Speaker 4: You know, it is what it is. I'm just so
- 16:53Speaker 4: glad that people are so thinking of it in a
- 16:57Speaker 4: positive in a positive way, thinking of the music and
- 17:01Speaker 4: positive with positive vibes and still listening to it in
- 17:05Speaker 4: the right way and you know, not being violent, not
- 17:09Speaker 4: being violent.
- 17:11Speaker 1: No, that's right, it's amazing. You should be really proud
- 17:14Speaker 1: of yourself.
- 17:16Speaker 2: You should.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And that's a lot, a lot to take on when
- 17:21Speaker 1: you hear someone say that you saved my life.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it's been it's been twenty it's been forty years.
- 17:29Speaker 4: I mean, you know it's still not stopping. I mean
- 17:35Speaker 4: it's going. I mean, it's just it's it's an amazing,
- 17:38Speaker 4: it's amazing thing. I just honored it.
- 17:41Speaker 2: It's totally yeah. Yeah.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And just to change the subject, you've straddled both punk
- 17:48Speaker 1: and metal scenes through your career. How do you think
- 17:50Speaker 1: Punk Ross would react to seeing Metal Ross today?
- 17:54Speaker 4: Well, they do all the time.
- 17:56Speaker 3: I'm still in the Dictators and I go back and forth.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I'm playing Steven's Underground Cruise next week when I come
- 18:03Speaker 3: back from Australia.
- 18:04Speaker 4: So both bands exist both you know, my my my
- 18:10Speaker 4: my Dictators fans no one loved me and respect me
- 18:14Speaker 4: for my for my accomplishments, and my band, my Dictators,
- 18:19Speaker 4: they expect expect me and my other band respects me
- 18:22Speaker 4: and uh, I've just moved.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Back and forth between genres for the past three you know,
- 18:29Speaker 3: so no one has ever come up to.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Me and say you can't do that. Yeah, no, you
- 18:35Speaker 4: can do that. Pick one or the other.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Yeah, fuck you, yeah, fuck you exactly. Great answer. And lastly,
