- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Jacob Binzer and from Dad, the Danish rock
- 0:04Speaker 1: band Dad.
- 0:05Speaker 2: You're talking to me live.
- 0:06Speaker 1: From Predicksparre Gardens in the middle of Copenhagen, which is
- 0:12Speaker 1: like a park that was founded here three hundred years
- 0:16Speaker 1: ago by Frederick the sixth, one of the Kings, one
- 0:22Speaker 1: of the infamous Danish crazy Kings. But anyway, we are
- 0:26Speaker 1: going to Australia with Dad to play some greatest greatest
- 0:32Speaker 1: hits as we call them, at least we think so.
- 0:36Speaker 2: And we're going to play some tracks from the new
- 0:38Speaker 2: album as well, and.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, and it's gonna be it was. It's such
- 0:46Speaker 1: a blast. Last time we went to Australia, which is
- 0:48Speaker 1: two years ago.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And before that it we were it was even longer ago.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It was like years and years ago before.
- 1:02Speaker 1: That, and so we really really appreciate that the Australian
- 1:07Speaker 1: fans that they hang on and they show up and
- 1:09Speaker 1: they sing along.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's it's such a pleasure. So we are looking forward.
- 1:15Speaker 3: That's mel I have to say, that's probably one of
- 1:17Speaker 3: the best introductions I've ever seved.
- 1:19Speaker 4: We had a bit of a history lesson there.
- 1:20Speaker 3: We've got a beautiful pictures park we're walking through that's
- 1:24Speaker 3: just top the cake for all of them.
- 1:25Speaker 2: May well done, great, You're welcome.
- 1:31Speaker 3: As you mentioned, Dad returned to Australia shortly for a
- 1:34Speaker 3: run of shows studying, made the twentieth in Perth, and
- 1:36Speaker 3: then you hit Brisbane and Sydney before finishing in Melbourne
- 1:39Speaker 3: and made the twenty fourth. Like, it's not that long yet, mate,
- 1:43Speaker 3: So are you packed and ready to go?
- 1:46Speaker 2: I'm packing, ready to go, and it's a well. I
- 1:51Speaker 2: wish I could.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Spend more time down there, but you know, it's just
- 1:56Speaker 1: started the festinal season in Europe, so unfortunately we have
- 1:59Speaker 1: to head back after. Like I think I can spend
- 2:04Speaker 1: a couple of days in Melbourne after the last show,
- 2:07Speaker 1: which I will enjoy, but then we are back to Europe.
- 2:13Speaker 1: But Australia. You know what what the first time back
- 2:19Speaker 1: in the early nineties when we went to promote and
- 2:22Speaker 1: play for the albums back then, then I went to
- 2:27Speaker 1: after the tour, I went to Cairns up north and
- 2:31Speaker 1: I went on a motorcycle the Safari on with a
- 2:35Speaker 1: local guide of there. And I want to do that again,
- 2:40Speaker 1: so please join in any one of you down there
- 2:45Speaker 1: sometime motorcycle Safarian Cairns.
- 2:48Speaker 2: How about that I'm.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Hearing that ro Remember I went to Cans for holiday
- 2:52Speaker 3: the day I finished high school when I was about sixteen,
- 2:55Speaker 3: and I never left for about twenty twenty eight years later.
- 2:57Speaker 4: I left the places. It was that good.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Okay, yeah it was great. Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 3: No, Now this has been builders the greatest hits, so right,
- 3:09Speaker 3: but you guys have got so many songs that it
- 3:11Speaker 3: considered greatest hits by your fans, Like, it will always
- 3:13Speaker 3: be harder for you to put together a greatest hits
- 3:16Speaker 3: to a sett list.
- 3:17Speaker 4: So what if you just played off a new album cycle,
- 3:19Speaker 4: isn't it?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's a yeah, it's it's hard to to
- 3:27Speaker 1: you want to play so many songs and it's really
- 3:29Speaker 1: hard to leave some out, but you have to. But
- 3:34Speaker 1: in the case of Australia, it's a little easier because
- 3:37Speaker 1: some of the albums that in the meantime that.
- 3:40Speaker 2: We released in Denmark.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Might not be that relevant to Australian agen But so
- 3:46Speaker 1: I think we're gonna put emphasis on like no Few
- 3:52Speaker 1: leftl the Pilgrims album and the new one, and then
- 3:56Speaker 1: we're gonna have like tracks from in between. Also, So
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think I don't know how long we're allowed to play,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but we should at least play line ninety minutes ninety
- 4:11Speaker 1: minutes of rock and roll.
- 4:12Speaker 4: I guess nice, nice, Now that's not the right.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Is a good point, mate, Like when you're doing greatest
- 4:18Speaker 3: hit shows, like do you change it? Certainly stop from
- 4:21Speaker 3: country to country because some countries, I can imagine some
- 4:24Speaker 3: songs will be more popular than others and they'd be
- 4:26Speaker 3: less popular in other countries. So do you chop and
- 4:28Speaker 3: change it to do with that? Or does everyone just
- 4:30Speaker 3: get the same experience.
- 4:32Speaker 2: We changed in a little bit.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Some songs are very popular in some countries and we
- 4:37Speaker 1: we just have to play it. And and but as
- 4:44Speaker 1: as the years go by, it it it.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Gets to be more and more the same because it's
- 4:52Speaker 2: like the whole thing it's distilled is like the Rolling Stones.
- 4:57Speaker 1: You want to hear jumping Jeck, Flash and satisfaction, and
- 5:01Speaker 1: that's kind of.
- 5:02Speaker 2: All over the world.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And it gets that it gets concentrated down to the
- 5:07Speaker 1: so the real to the real classics.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Right. And but in terms of the new album, you
- 5:14Speaker 2: never know which ones are.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Ah, you know, the album is still so new, so
- 5:19Speaker 1: we don't know if any of those songs is gonna
- 5:22Speaker 1: be part of like.
- 5:23Speaker 2: The Greatest Hits Collie collection in the future.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Mh. But like you know a song, we have songs
- 5:30Speaker 1: that we have to play in Portugal, we have songs
- 5:32Speaker 1: that we have to play Sweden, and uh so we
- 5:38Speaker 1: just changed it a little bit.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Now, you guys have been around for a long while,
- 5:42Speaker 3: so you spread up demographic of your fan base comes
- 5:45Speaker 3: a few generations, right, So just say Dad's dragging his
- 5:48Speaker 3: son along to watch you guys for the first time
- 5:50Speaker 3: and says, you got to see these guys.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Boy, they're fucking all sudden.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Like, what three songs would you tell that people listen
- 5:56Speaker 3: to get ready for a Dad live show.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I would start off with the first song of the
- 6:05Speaker 1: new album called God Praise to Man, which is like
- 6:09Speaker 1: a modern rock anthem.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well it's not modern, it's just new, but.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Like that's the newest Dad rock anthem. And I think
- 6:25Speaker 1: then you have you would have to listen to. You
- 6:32Speaker 1: would have to listen to nineteen hundred Yesterday, a track
- 6:36Speaker 1: from the album called Everything Close, which is from the
- 6:39Speaker 1: year two thousand, which is man like the poppy sound
- 6:44Speaker 1: sound of Dad. And then you have to listen to
- 6:47Speaker 1: Sleeping My Day Away, which is our hit single from
- 6:51Speaker 1: back in the day that that's that's the song that
- 6:54Speaker 1: made the whole difference.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So you need to listen to that, bro.
- 7:00Speaker 3: So if you got yourself a bottle of water or
- 7:01Speaker 3: is there a water fountain, handy because it looks pretty
- 7:03Speaker 3: bloody hot where you are.
- 7:06Speaker 2: It is kind of hot.
- 7:07Speaker 1: It's like the first hot I would say it's the
- 7:10Speaker 1: first hot day in Denmark.
- 7:12Speaker 2: It's like, I think it's almost like twenty degrees here.
- 7:17Speaker 2: What's it like a membrane?
- 7:18Speaker 4: Now, Melbourne, you can go through four different seasons in
- 7:21Speaker 4: one day.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Maybe you can wake up and it'll be forty degrees
- 7:24Speaker 3: and half an hour later it'll be raining, And so
- 7:26Speaker 3: I wouldn't really gauge it by Melbourne. I'll probably take
- 7:28Speaker 3: a jumper for Melbourne. But the rest of Australia is
- 7:30Speaker 3: pretty pretty.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Warm right now.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Okay, okay, very good.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I read it quite from Jasper where he said that
- 7:40Speaker 3: a dad show is a party and it always will be,
- 7:43Speaker 3: which is a pretty big call coming over to Australia, mate,
- 7:45Speaker 3: because US guys are well known for.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Our love of a party, so you're gonna have to
- 7:50Speaker 4: bring it.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we know, we know, what Australians are
- 7:55Speaker 1: all about when they go to a show, and we
- 7:59Speaker 1: want The first time we were in Australia, we watched
- 8:02Speaker 1: one of the local reps from the record community took
- 8:06Speaker 1: us to a show with the Angels. Yeah, it was
- 8:10Speaker 1: like this huge club kind of feeling and it was
- 8:14Speaker 1: like there was really a night out with the guys
- 8:18Speaker 1: and the beers. We know what that feeling is, you know,
- 8:21Speaker 1: we know what that is in Denmark. So don't you worry.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But I think that it's it's more than a party.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You get to get to take something home also something
- 8:31Speaker 1: to think about.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And we have I like to believe that some of our.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Strongs ah something you want to want to listen to
- 8:43Speaker 1: with your headphones.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Uh, also when you're home in your room and femalelancholic.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So I think we come home on into just the party,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but we know what the party is a problem.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It's actually funny that you mentioned the Angels made because
- 9:02Speaker 3: I haven't heard all that much of Dad's music, but
- 9:05Speaker 3: I checked a couple of songs on while I was
- 9:06Speaker 3: doing the questions up and the first band I thought
- 9:09Speaker 3: of that he's reminded me of was the Angels and
- 9:11Speaker 3: it's like it's just quite uncanny that you mentioned them.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty good. Yes, So you.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Guys are well known for your live shows, mate like,
- 9:21Speaker 3: and he's been doing this for a long time. So
- 9:23Speaker 3: do you still have to practice and do you still
- 9:25Speaker 3: put a lot of work into your live shows or
- 9:27Speaker 3: as are all pretty much second nature by now.
- 9:31Speaker 1: We're trying to make a new uh stage shit every
- 9:37Speaker 1: time we go out for a new round, and we
- 9:41Speaker 1: try to change it and keep ourselves excited in the audience.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Who tries to surprise the audience. And we although we
- 9:48Speaker 1: don't have to rehearse the songs, we have to rehearse
- 9:53Speaker 1: the set list. We have to if we want to
- 9:55Speaker 1: make a set list that you know, not with.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Too many breaks. We have to keep the energy up.
- 10:03Speaker 2: And so we we spent some time.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Playing playing the setlist from start to finish to get
- 10:12Speaker 1: you know, to get get the feeling of the whole show.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So we we we do that some paces.
- 10:21Speaker 1: In a row before we go into it, and then
- 10:23Speaker 1: we designed. We work on the setlist for quite a
- 10:27Speaker 1: while actually, and playing the songs that way.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Yeah, So it's like, you know, you have to get
- 10:37Speaker 5: it into your backbone, the feel of the settings, so
- 10:40Speaker 5: don't have to think once you're there that it gives
- 10:42Speaker 5: a better bad experience for the audience audience as well.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's got to touch on this before my but
- 10:50Speaker 4: it was actually his second album. I feel left to
- 10:52Speaker 4: the Pilgrims.
- 10:53Speaker 3: In nineteen ninety nine that the world was a whole
- 10:55Speaker 3: pretty much caught up with the ideas. So what was
- 10:57Speaker 3: it do you think about that album and that time
- 11:00Speaker 3: period that made people actually get what you were doing.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I think it was a combination of we we kind
- 11:10Speaker 2: of hit the.
- 11:12Speaker 1: We hit the right nerve in terms of what the
- 11:15Speaker 1: rock feeling was like at the time, and at the
- 11:19Speaker 1: same time, we brought something different which was like some
- 11:24Speaker 1: sort of melodic sense that we have in Scandinavia and
- 11:28Speaker 1: it's just a little bit different sound, uh, and we
- 11:34Speaker 1: brought and also the lyrics it's not your the usual
- 11:41Speaker 1: boy meets girl lyrics or or it was like the
- 11:48Speaker 1: lyrics are quite unusual. So all those combinations I think
- 11:56Speaker 1: made the difference.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Yeah, benefit of the time, I like the whole whole stadiography.
- 12:04Speaker 3: I guess you think that's your best party of a
- 12:07Speaker 3: work or do you think other albums better?
- 12:12Speaker 2: Well, I think you can never tell how you rank
- 12:17Speaker 2: an album until some time has passed.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But if I'd say that, yeah, no few level albums,
- 12:24Speaker 1: It's definitely be one of the the best albums. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think that the song slip my Dair Away and
- 12:34Speaker 1: the song point of.
- 12:35Speaker 2: View and that kind of sound is what is most maybe.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Most unique about the A D when you when you
- 12:44Speaker 1: really have to to distill it down.
- 12:47Speaker 3: To so.
- 12:50Speaker 2: To be as concise as possible.
- 12:52Speaker 1: But and so that album and the album Everything Closed
- 12:55Speaker 1: from two thousand is also uh one of the better ones.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And but I would leave it, I would leave it to.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Someone else to to make that distinction, I think, because yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: but time with Yeah, you can see over time which
- 13:18Speaker 1: albums uh has uh what what quality? How they rank?
- 13:24Speaker 1: You never know where to do it, and you shouldn't
- 13:26Speaker 1: really worry too much. Yeah, you actually just do what
- 13:30Speaker 1: you can in the moment and then then you must
- 13:33Speaker 1: see how it lies. Actually, that was my opinion right now.
- 13:37Speaker 3: You also recently celebrated forty years as a band mate,
- 13:40Speaker 3: which is a massive achievement. But does that molestone actually sucky? Yeah,
- 13:44Speaker 3: Like if you just taking a step back and just
- 13:46Speaker 3: go on like we're pretty fucking cool.
- 13:48Speaker 4: You know how many people have done this?
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's and it's a I'm I'm.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I think it's surreal that that forty years has gone
- 14:01Speaker 1: by because I feel like it's the same, It's still
- 14:04Speaker 1: the same. I just you know, the way our work
- 14:09Speaker 1: is just like you work on the next project and
- 14:12Speaker 1: you don't look too much further than that. If you
- 14:15Speaker 1: work on the next, next project and you think about
- 14:17Speaker 1: the next tour, and I don't know, how would it
- 14:21Speaker 1: would feel if if I woke up one morning and
- 14:25Speaker 1: we didn't have a kick in the calendar, we didn't
- 14:27Speaker 1: have some project in the future.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I mean that remains to be seen. But you know
- 14:36Speaker 2: what that.
- 14:39Speaker 1: When you when you think of a rock paint that
- 14:42Speaker 1: existed for forty years, it's like it's like somehow it's
- 14:46Speaker 1: unnatural because one role is all about being in the
- 14:49Speaker 1: moment and the immediate feeling. But the immediate feeling has
- 14:57Speaker 1: lasted forty years now, and the immediate feeling is what
- 15:01Speaker 1: you get when you go to the show, and that's
- 15:03Speaker 1: what you appreciate. That's what I appreciate when I go
- 15:06Speaker 1: see one of my favorite paints. I don't care if
- 15:10Speaker 1: the songs they play.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Is a new or thirty years old. If they played.
- 15:17Speaker 1: With enthusiasm and respect, then it's that moment I want,
- 15:24Speaker 1: so I try to do that.
- 15:26Speaker 4: And fantastic JAS. Thanks very much for your time, Bro,
- 15:29Speaker 4: it's been absolutely pleasure chat. Really, I'll come along to
- 15:31Speaker 4: the Brisbane show and I think you can have a
- 15:33Speaker 4: ber okay
