- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey guys, this is Glenn Patrick from Australian rock band
- 0:04Speaker 1: Shotgun Mistress, your favorite Australian rock band, Shotgun Mistress, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: we're about to go on tour in a week and
- 0:10Speaker 1: a half with the legendary Winger. It is going to
- 0:14Speaker 1: be absolutely amazing. We're absolutely honored to be a part
- 0:17Speaker 1: of it, and we've yeah, we've we've.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Just been building up to the to this over the
- 0:23Speaker 2: past couple of months.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We've taken a bit of hiatus for a couple of
- 0:26Speaker 1: months since our album launch back end of last year,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and you know, building up to this this tour, so yeah,
- 0:34Speaker 1: very exciting and.
- 0:35Speaker 3: What a way to come back from a hiatus man.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's it's. It wasn't It was quite quite
- 0:41Speaker 1: short lived. But you know, we had another tour that
- 0:47Speaker 1: we were going to be doing with Mike Tramp in January,
- 0:51Speaker 1: which would sort of fell through. But instead of that,
- 0:55Speaker 1: we've got Wingers. So we're we're so bad because Winger,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I think is more where we sit musically as well,
- 1:01Speaker 1: so I think it'll hopefully compliment each other and we're
- 1:03Speaker 1: just super stoked to be a woman of the crowd
- 1:05Speaker 1: up for them.
- 1:06Speaker 4: No, so for those who don't know the full details
- 1:08Speaker 4: of that Shotgun Mistress are about to hit the road
- 1:10Speaker 4: soon with Winger Run a date through Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide,
- 1:14Speaker 4: Brisbane and Perth starting on April the sixth. Mate, So
- 1:17Speaker 4: what do you guys like, He's packed and ready to
- 1:19Speaker 4: go at all organized so you can leave to the
- 1:20Speaker 4: last minute, just throw some shit in.
- 1:21Speaker 2: The bag, man, I think we're okay. I mean I
- 1:24Speaker 2: haven't packed yet.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I mean we're usually a last minute packer, but as
- 1:27Speaker 1: far as the music stuff is concerned, we're usually pretty prepared. Where, yeah,
- 1:33Speaker 1: we take things like that pretty seriously. Yeah, things like
- 1:37Speaker 1: you even on the days, like you know, getting too
- 1:39Speaker 1: soundcheck early and you know, bumping in and out really as.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Quick as possible.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's yeah, I think things like that have really sort
- 1:46Speaker 1: of fallen by the wayside a bit over the years,
- 1:48Speaker 1: especially in modern day musicianship, where they you know, take
- 1:53Speaker 1: the time to get of the days, people don't help
- 1:55Speaker 1: each other out. It's still that age old thing where
- 1:57Speaker 1: the singer sits back and watch the drummer take all
- 2:00Speaker 1: the drums apart. And it does change. I'll tell you
- 2:06Speaker 1: that it does change. But yeah, I don't know we're pretty.
- 2:13Speaker 2: That's the words I guess on point when it comes
- 2:17Speaker 2: to things like that. So except for the backpacking obviously.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Now, you guys have supported your fair share of national
- 2:24Speaker 4: and international bands, including Slaughter, Dirty Honey, Midnight Devils, the
- 2:27Speaker 4: Poor MAML But.
- 2:29Speaker 3: This one's got to be pretty special made. It's fucking Winger.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It's Winger, and it holds a special plate place right
- 2:37Speaker 1: here for me as well, because you know I was
- 2:41Speaker 1: talking to I was talking to Dan McDougall from Volume
- 2:44Speaker 1: Dealer before and we're talking about you know, inspirations, and
- 2:47Speaker 1: I think mine was definitely you know Bill and Ted
- 2:52Speaker 1: and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. One of the one
- 2:55Speaker 1: of my favorite songs off that was battle Stations And
- 2:57Speaker 1: although I haven't heard Kipping the guy play battle Station
- 3:01Speaker 1: in a life set for a very long time.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So crossing my fingers. But we'll see.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You need to get to have a word in his
- 3:08Speaker 3: ear this time about it to see what you can
- 3:09Speaker 3: do about it.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, mate, If you can help, that'd
- 3:12Speaker 2: be great.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Too easy.
- 3:14Speaker 4: And of course it's not just Winger, it's the original
- 3:18Speaker 4: lineup of Winger Richard's the very first time they're coming
- 3:20Speaker 4: out to Australia. From what Kip tells me, it's going
- 3:22Speaker 4: to be the very last time as well, so you
- 3:24Speaker 4: won't get another chance.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yes, that's right.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And I can't just say the caliber of musicians in
- 3:31Speaker 1: the original lineup of Wing. I mean all the Wing
- 3:33Speaker 1: musics have been great, but like this original lineup. Man,
- 3:39Speaker 1: we're going to be mingling with Rock Royalty and I
- 3:41Speaker 1: think we spoke.
- 3:42Speaker 2: About it offline before that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: These these players, they played with the Greatest White Snake
- 3:50Speaker 1: and Alice Cooper and mister Big but the police go on.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So we're we're really excited to get to hopefully hang
- 3:59Speaker 1: out with them a little bit and just share the
- 4:02Speaker 1: stage of them.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Well, now a lot of our listeners wouldn't be aware
- 4:05Speaker 4: of things like this, mate, So I have the national
- 4:08Speaker 4: support for an international heavyweight, Like, what are your responsibilities exactly?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Don't fuck up?
- 4:22Speaker 1: As I said before, just turn up on time, I think,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and look, especially if you're the only support act for
- 4:29Speaker 1: an international artist like this, I think timing is key,
- 4:34Speaker 1: you know, making sure that everything runs as smoothly as
- 4:36Speaker 1: possible and making sure the crowd's warmed up enough. You know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: we're not the main act. We're not here to sort
- 4:41Speaker 1: of steal the limelight. We here obviously to get a
- 4:44Speaker 1: little bit of notoriety and hopefully help with ourselves out.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But at the same time, you know, we've.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Got this opportunity to be able to support these you know,
- 4:52Speaker 1: these amazing musicians for the last time. So we're just
- 4:55Speaker 1: on it to be a part of it. And I
- 4:56Speaker 1: think that's pretty much our job is just to turn up, play,
- 5:01Speaker 1: warm it up. And yeah, that's as far as it goes.
- 5:05Speaker 4: That's a bit of an extension on that, mate, Like
- 5:07Speaker 4: from a personal point of view, like, do you go
- 5:09Speaker 4: on set because you plan to a whole new crowd
- 5:11Speaker 4: who might not know any of your shit and they're
- 5:13Speaker 4: just had to see Winger? But do you go out
- 5:16Speaker 4: on stage intending to blow the headliners off stage? Like
- 5:19Speaker 4: is that what your mindset is? Or do you just
- 5:21Speaker 4: sort of go out there you know you've got a
- 5:22Speaker 4: job to do and you just got to warm the
- 5:24Speaker 4: crowd up.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Look, I'd like to say, and yes to the first one.
- 5:28Speaker 1: We always have that sort of intention in our heads.
- 5:32Speaker 1: You know, blood out of the water, you know, make
- 5:35Speaker 1: people sort of think, you know, why are these people supporting?
- 5:37Speaker 1: But yeah, things tours like this, it's I mean, we
- 5:42Speaker 1: still go out thinking that, but.
- 5:46Speaker 2: We're up against people that have been been doing this
- 5:48Speaker 2: since the eighties.
- 5:49Speaker 3: It'll never happened, But you've got to have that mindset.
- 5:52Speaker 2: The mindset is important.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Yes, I think it's quite important to have a little
- 5:56Speaker 1: bit of ego there, not so much that it takes you,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know, on this blind sided adventure and you think
- 6:04Speaker 1: your top ship for everybody. I think this is something
- 6:06Speaker 1: whereby it's quite needed to have something like that because
- 6:09Speaker 1: it gives you the courage, and it gives you the
- 6:11Speaker 1: you know that that drive, that tenacity, especially on stage
- 6:15Speaker 1: with the charisma type thing. I think optics is you know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: at least fifty sixty percent of it. When it comes
- 6:23Speaker 1: to a show, people ten not to really think something
- 6:26Speaker 1: is memorable if the band members are just standing there
- 6:28Speaker 1: just playing the instruments as good as they can be.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I mean, I've seen some amazing bands, you know, I've
- 6:33Speaker 1: seen Glenn Hughes and alter Bridge that they don't really.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Do big sort of performative shows.
- 6:40Speaker 1: They just like amazing musicians and they sit there and
- 6:42Speaker 1: some ASTs like those guys can really pull off.
- 6:48Speaker 2: But you know, us still still sort of young bucks.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Really when it comes to comparatively to these bands, we
- 6:55Speaker 1: try to, I guess, make up for lack of experience
- 7:00Speaker 1: the shawmanship.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Now, speaking of showmanship and optics made like I've seen
- 7:04Speaker 4: you guys in use are one high energy motherfucking man,
- 7:08Speaker 4: you know, like you jump around like a maniac. The
- 7:10Speaker 4: rest of the boys right into it, run through a
- 7:13Speaker 4: typical live show from Shotgun Mistress.
- 7:16Speaker 3: For those who might not have seen.
- 7:17Speaker 1: You, man, the first thing that happens in sound check
- 7:21Speaker 1: is I will first thing is looking around to see
- 7:25Speaker 1: what I can jump on, see what I can hang off,
- 7:30Speaker 1: seeing whether or not the drum kit is stable enough
- 7:33Speaker 1: for me to jump off. That type of shit, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I think it's sounds for me. I think comes a
- 7:40Speaker 1: close second. It's funny because lately I actually went and
- 7:45Speaker 1: got my ears checked recently for.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe like hearing list.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I've been a builder in a museum my entire life,
- 7:52Speaker 1: so my hearing I thought would have been absolutely screwed.
- 7:56Speaker 2: And I have.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Actually recently had a test and I was quite surprised
- 8:01Speaker 1: that I actually have really really good hearing for my age.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But I think my ears tend to get a little
- 8:07Speaker 1: bit tired after about three quarters of the way through,
- 8:09Speaker 1: like a longer set, all right, So I think, like tonally,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I start to sort of struggle a little bit. So
- 8:16Speaker 1: what usually happens then is you'll notice me going out
- 8:18Speaker 1: in the crowd a lot more because I can hear
- 8:20Speaker 1: a lot more in front of the house.
- 8:24Speaker 2: You know, it kills two birds of Monstone.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I suppose.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Just say people, And unfortunately it's going to be a
- 8:31Speaker 4: lot of people just going to see Winger.
- 8:33Speaker 3: But when they leave, I guarantee you they remember the
- 8:35Speaker 3: name Shock. I'm misstress.
- 8:36Speaker 4: But it's three songs of yours that they can listen
- 8:38Speaker 4: to before they come along, so they get to know
- 8:40Speaker 4: the band.
- 8:40Speaker 3: All be better.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh man, you're so kind, Thank you very much.
- 8:44Speaker 1: We'll see about that. I think the three songs personally,
- 8:50Speaker 1: I I really enjoy Shotdown at the moment. We kind
- 8:57Speaker 1: of go through ebbs and flows when it comes to
- 9:00Speaker 1: the songs. And you know, there was a time where
- 9:02Speaker 1: I was really enjoying Jude Judas. We'd opened with Judas
- 9:05Speaker 1: quite a lot over the past year. But we're going
- 9:07Speaker 1: to change it up a little bit for this Winger tour,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and I don't know, for some reason, the Jude Judas
- 9:12Speaker 1: track was really good as an opener, and I'm not
- 9:15Speaker 1: vibing as much as it not being an opener, So
- 9:18Speaker 1: usually i'd say Jude Judas, but definitely shot down.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I love Mary Jane. Mary Jane's. It was a track
- 9:23Speaker 2: that really wrote well.
- 9:27Speaker 1: It wrote quickly, and it was something where Ben put
- 9:30Speaker 1: together the guitar.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Line to it and sent it over to me and Matt.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Matt sort of turned it into a song, brought it
- 9:39Speaker 1: to me and I wrote the lyrics in about sit
- 9:40Speaker 1: a ten to fifteen minutes and it was something that
- 9:43Speaker 1: it was.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Just really easy and it just felt really really good.
- 9:47Speaker 2: So definitely Mary Jane.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Like I'm saying all the new ones off the Kings
- 9:50Speaker 1: of the Revolution album, I know, is that a sales pitch?
- 9:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Probably those three for the time.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Speaking of things of the Revolution made it was your
- 10:02Speaker 4: second album that came out in June of last year.
- 10:04Speaker 3: So how was the reception for that? Made it fans
- 10:07Speaker 3: warmer the way you expected it?
- 10:08Speaker 1: Man, we got it's the ari top thirty album charts.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And for an independent band that's not signed to anybody,
- 10:15Speaker 1: you know, we do all our own pr we we're
- 10:18Speaker 1: the ones that are hustling for tours like this, and
- 10:20Speaker 1: we do everything in house, and it's it's something that
- 10:23Speaker 1: we're just extremely proud of. Yeah, the first album and
- 10:27Speaker 1: the second album both really I mean, they've got similarities,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but I think there's enough differences for people to sort
- 10:34Speaker 1: of know what songs from the first album and what
- 10:37Speaker 1: songs from the second album. I think the second albums
- 10:39Speaker 1: are a bit sort of like more metally more so
- 10:44Speaker 1: than the first album and more the first album was
- 10:46Speaker 1: more a bit sort of like you year, dirty La Strip,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you know, velvet revolvery vibe, when this one is definitely.
- 10:55Speaker 2: More of a metally, more rock sort of style.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So I think think the album itself production wise, I
- 11:03Speaker 1: loved it.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Personally.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I thought it was a step up. The reception has
- 11:07Speaker 1: been fantastic. We're blown away by it, and you know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: it's still kicking on with with things like Winger and
- 11:14Speaker 1: getting these opportunities as well. And we've we are just
- 11:18Speaker 1: finished writing the third album and we are just putting
- 11:22Speaker 1: together I guess the live making sure it all. You know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: we all click together, playing it before we head into
- 11:28Speaker 1: the studio probably in a few months times to record
- 11:30Speaker 1: it ready hopefully to start releasing in the year.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Nice and is that one sort of shaping up to
- 11:36Speaker 4: be more metalier again or is it going to be
- 11:39Speaker 4: sort of more back to the first album.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Sound Man, good question. I'm actually really digging the sound
- 11:44Speaker 1: of this. It's actually a bit more Southern than anything else.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we've.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Well, I've found and I don't know if this is
- 11:53Speaker 1: on purpose or not, but with bands that we tour
- 11:56Speaker 1: with over the years, and you know, all these all
- 11:58Speaker 1: these big acts of it's it's almost like we've we've
- 12:02Speaker 1: taken snippets of these particular bands and influences that maybe
- 12:07Speaker 1: they had. Yeah, the sudden thing definitely, you know that
- 12:10Speaker 1: your dirty honey is and your electric marrory is like
- 12:12Speaker 1: that that that's real sort of suddenly bluesy. We've got
- 12:15Speaker 1: a few of those in this next album, which is
- 12:17Speaker 1: really good. Is you know what we thought was going
- 12:20Speaker 1: to be like a double time to sound as it
- 12:22Speaker 1: has now been a halftime. It just sits in a
- 12:24Speaker 1: really nice groove.
- 12:27Speaker 2: And but then there's other ones.
- 12:29Speaker 1: There's there's one song in particular on this new album
- 12:31Speaker 1: that is like, you know, very in line with sort
- 12:35Speaker 1: of like Mammal, So it's almost like a fast worded half.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I mean it's not in any way hip hop, but
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's more like a just a fast worded song on
- 12:48Speaker 1: a couple other songs like Your Shot Downs and Your
- 12:51Speaker 1: Pretty Little Things, but this one's got a little bit
- 12:53Speaker 1: more of a bit more of a push towards that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: So yeah, I like like that the inspirations slowly flow
- 13:03Speaker 1: into the albums that we make, but not steering too
- 13:05Speaker 1: far away, so the people who already know us don't
- 13:09Speaker 1: get disappointed by the difference in sounds. So yeah, we're
- 13:11Speaker 1: really excited about how it sounds going to turn out nice.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Before I let you go glad, I've started a new
- 13:16Speaker 4: segment called photo Bombs. So basically, I've trod through social media.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Before he's spoken, I've come up with a few photos
- 13:23Speaker 4: that I want to ask you a little bit more about.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Here we go, right, yeah, this one here, I'm not
- 13:28Speaker 5: sure what's happening, But is that like fucking is that
- 13:31Speaker 5: some kind of naughty cormac as there's two people facing
- 13:35Speaker 5: the wall and it doesn't look like they're pissing to me?
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, no, good, good, good spot in there. Chris, me
- 13:41Speaker 2: and Dave had a few hours off. We were We're
- 13:45Speaker 2: on so I think we're on two think.
- 13:47Speaker 1: That was the last show that we did with the
- 13:50Speaker 1: Electric Mary to right after we got out of COVID,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and that was in Ballarat, and we thought, we've got
- 13:57Speaker 1: a few hours, let's go to Sovereign Hell, which funnily enough,
- 14:00Speaker 1: is exactly where my daughter is on camp at the moment.
- 14:02Speaker 2: So that was that's pretty funny.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah, So that was just we were sick and tired
- 14:09Speaker 1: of the stupid photos that we usually do because our faces.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You know what happens when you get a camera in
- 14:14Speaker 1: front of you and then you just pull down ridiculous spaces.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You don't know where to look, you don't know what
- 14:18Speaker 1: to do. So we thought it would be good just
- 14:20Speaker 1: to take random photos of us staring at something else
- 14:24Speaker 1: for once.
- 14:25Speaker 3: How long did you leave him standing there for?
- 14:27Speaker 5: Like it?
- 14:27Speaker 3: Did?
- 14:27Speaker 4: You have to say?
- 14:28Speaker 1: It? There for a couple of minutes until we stopped
- 14:31Speaker 1: talking absolute shit? So I gave you there for a
- 14:34Speaker 1: couple of hours, right.
- 14:38Speaker 4: And the second one I found, I tried to come
- 14:41Speaker 4: up with something witty to say about it, but I
- 14:44Speaker 4: just couldn't. So all I'm going to say is, what
- 14:46Speaker 4: the absolute fuck?
- 14:52Speaker 1: That's my favorite shot of Ben I think as a baby.
- 14:56Speaker 1: He's yeah, I don't know, man. We found the bonnet
- 15:00Speaker 1: of Ben's little bonnet and the outfit. It was one
- 15:05Speaker 1: of my daughter's baby actually could be my mum. That's
- 15:08Speaker 1: like an old sort of doll thing. So we had
- 15:12Speaker 1: him poking his head through a pram and we cut
- 15:15Speaker 1: a hole in the back of the pram so he
- 15:16Speaker 1: could poke his head through. So he looks like he's
- 15:18Speaker 1: a little baby in there. And that was the music
- 15:22Speaker 1: video for Glorious Machine.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Alright, so there he was the reason behind it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: There is yes, so yes, so the music for Glorious Machine.
- 15:30Speaker 1: The cameo obviously days in there and Ben's in there.
- 15:32Speaker 1: The cameo The Lovely Lady with the blue green hair
- 15:37Speaker 1: is probably my longest friend, Ollie Sampson, who is a
- 15:42Speaker 1: gun photographer. He's actually got a heap of stories and
- 15:46Speaker 1: he got to he does these really cool stories whereby
- 15:51Speaker 1: he will go and travel overseas and he'll do stories
- 15:56Speaker 1: on people that he used to be big in a
- 15:58Speaker 1: certain industry and then they completely chat. So, for instance,
- 16:00Speaker 1: he went and did spend a week with remember the
- 16:04Speaker 1: childlike Empress from the Never Ending Story The Young Girl.
- 16:09Speaker 1: She's obviously she got quite successful from that movie and
- 16:11Speaker 1: a couple of other things, and then she completely changed
- 16:14Speaker 1: her story, her life and work style and.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Became a balllerainger. I think she turned into ballet so
- 16:22Speaker 2: that was that was pretty cool.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Did you say a ballet dancer or ballet dancer?
- 16:26Speaker 2: Ballet dancer dancers.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Sounds so much wrong anxiety.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Ah, yeah, absolutely so. Yeah. I don't know if you
- 16:35Speaker 2: lost me or not.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But Chunk from the Goonies he also did because he
- 16:40Speaker 1: turned into a lawyer, so he gets to do these
- 16:43Speaker 1: awesome things.
- 16:44Speaker 2: So he did the.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Videography for us for that one, and yeah, it was.
