- 3:12Speaker 1: David's daughter. I've had the opportunity to interview Katrine before
- 3:16Speaker 1: for a slew of different articles, but our sit down
- 3:19Speaker 1: for Hurdle was really really special. I can say that
- 3:22Speaker 1: without a doubt that today's interview is very candid and
- 3:26Speaker 1: it's just Katrine being Katrine. Her story is actually really remarkable.
- 3:30Speaker 1: She started doing CrossFit back in twenty eleven and she
- 3:33Speaker 1: was at the Games the following year, talk about progress.
- 3:37Speaker 1: She came from a competitive gymnastics background where she started
- 3:40Speaker 1: competing when she was six years old. Plays thirtieth her
- 3:44Speaker 1: first time at the Games, twenty fourth in her second
- 3:47Speaker 1: appearance in the Games, and then we talk about her
- 3:49Speaker 1: hurdle moment when in twenty fourteen she didn't make the
- 3:53Speaker 1: Games due to falling just short on an event in
- 3:55Speaker 1: the qualifiers back in Europe. We get really personal and
- 3:58Speaker 1: talk about the extra special relationship that she had with
- 4:02Speaker 1: her grandmother and how her light is something that she
- 4:04Speaker 1: carries with her every single day. We chat a lot
- 4:08Speaker 1: about mental toughness and how it's so important the conversations
- 4:12Speaker 1: that we have with ourselves when we're really going through it,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and how she's gotten through the hard days, the hard
- 4:17Speaker 1: events with some positive self talk. You know, one of
- 4:20Speaker 1: my favorite things about Catherine is her can do attitude,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and I love that she says so many times in
- 4:25Speaker 1: the podcast, I have the opportunity or I get to
- 4:29Speaker 1: so often it's like, Oh, I have to go to
- 4:32Speaker 1: this coffee meeting, or I have this thing I have
- 4:34Speaker 1: to do after work. But the reality is is that
- 4:37Speaker 1: sometimes we forget to take a step back and realize
- 4:39Speaker 1: how fortunate we are to have these chances in life.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You guys know how it goes. At Hurdle Podcasts at
- 4:46Speaker 1: Emily a body so quick shout out to my friends

- 5:14Speaker 1: to hurdling. Today. I'm sitting down with Catherine David's daughter.
- 5:23Speaker 1: She's a two time at Crosswit Games champion, a seven
- 5:27Speaker 1: time Crosswick Games athlete.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Welcome, thank you, thank you so much for having me.
- 5:32Speaker 1: The thing about that is that the Crosswick Games have
- 5:35Speaker 1: happened in multiple places, but both of which you've participated
- 5:38Speaker 1: in very far from home. So talk to me a
- 5:40Speaker 1: little bit about growing up in Iceland.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah. I love Iceland and now just with my training schedule,
- 5:48Speaker 2: I don't get spend as much time there as I like,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and every time that I'm home, I literally just might
- 5:56Speaker 2: be driving around in my car and I literally just think,
- 5:58Speaker 2: I'm like, I love of Iceland. I love how small
- 6:02Speaker 2: it is. I love that, you know everyone I missed
- 6:05Speaker 2: the swimming pools, Like we say, like, do you want
- 6:08Speaker 2: to go swimming? And we actually may just hang out
- 6:11Speaker 2: in the outdoor hot tubs. It's there's like such a
- 6:13Speaker 2: swimming culture this time of the year. It's still light
- 6:17Speaker 2: so late. Yeah, I love everything about it.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I went to my first hot spring exactly where in
- 6:26Speaker 1: Dungeon Hot Springs in Colorado. Oh, in Iceland.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder if I like look like the same.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And it looked like a little hole in the drama
- 6:34Speaker 1: that just happened to be eat it and parts of
- 6:36Speaker 1: it were muddy, and I mean it was great to
- 6:38Speaker 1: get into, but not as stunning as the photos of
- 6:41Speaker 1: that I've seen what you've got.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to admit now that I have not
- 6:45Speaker 2: been to any of the like the wild hot springs
- 6:47Speaker 2: or that's something that's so touristy, and whenever people come
- 6:51Speaker 2: visit Ice did, and I feel like they're telling me
- 6:52Speaker 2: about things that they did. I'm like, oh wow, that
- 6:54Speaker 2: sounds so cool, you know, like I still haven't been
- 6:58Speaker 2: on top of a glacier or snowing, Whereas I feel
- 7:01Speaker 2: like anyone that visits me like goes and does that
- 7:03Speaker 2: so first thing. Yeah, I definitely I should be a
- 7:05Speaker 2: tourist in my own country.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I actually went last year or the year before, I
- 7:09Speaker 1: went on a bike tour around New York City. I've
- 7:11Speaker 1: lived here for eight years and I learned so much
- 7:15Speaker 1: And I can't believe it took me this long just
- 7:17Speaker 1: to like bike around for someone to tell me about
- 7:20Speaker 1: the place that I walked by, yeah, like twenty times
- 7:23Speaker 1: every month. So talk to me a little bit about
- 7:25Speaker 1: growing up in Iceland though, Like how was your childhood?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Were you active from a young age.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I was very active as a kid, and I was
- 7:34Speaker 2: born hyper competitive. Everything that I did, I always wanted
- 7:37Speaker 2: to compete against someone, whether that was running around the
- 7:40Speaker 2: block or making up this obstacle course that we would
- 7:43Speaker 2: tire ourselves doing or whatever. It was so very active.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And I feel like in Iceland, because it's such a
- 7:51Speaker 2: such a small country, you know, everyone, we had a
- 7:53Speaker 2: lot of freedom. You just go out. If I wasn't
- 7:56Speaker 2: in gymnastics, I'd go out and knock on people's doors
- 7:58Speaker 2: all around. It would kind of like gather everyone out
- 8:01Speaker 2: there and we just play games. And then you know,
- 8:03Speaker 2: when it was dinnertime, my mom would just come out
- 8:05Speaker 2: and you know, yell our names and we'd run home.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So we had very lucky that it's like a very
- 8:11Speaker 2: secure country and that we had we got to have
- 8:14Speaker 2: that kind of freedom to roam and just be. And
- 8:18Speaker 2: I also think it's one of those countries that I
- 8:20Speaker 2: don't know, like maybe it's just the way that my
- 8:22Speaker 2: mom raised me, but I do feel like it's a
- 8:24Speaker 2: thing at icon where like I was raised believing that
- 8:26Speaker 2: I could do whatever I wanted, whatever I set my
- 8:29Speaker 2: mind to.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Amazing very different also from where you live now. So
- 8:33Speaker 1: tell me about what life is like in Boston.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so I live with my coach and his family.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It's it's in Natick, so right outside of Boston. And
- 8:44Speaker 2: I just think this wall can be so funny. I
- 8:47Speaker 2: just think about, like, how did a girl from my
- 8:49Speaker 2: son end up in Natick and Boston. And I'm so
- 8:52Speaker 2: lucky to have my coach that I feel like has
- 8:57Speaker 2: taught me so much, and I feel like us as
- 8:59Speaker 2: a team would accomplished so much that you know, I
- 9:01Speaker 2: never would have done by myself. So it is very different.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I know, I didn't go to America until I was
- 9:07Speaker 2: twelve or thirteen when my grandparents lived there, and then
- 9:11Speaker 2: it was it was so big. I remember, the food
- 9:14Speaker 2: is different, the candy is different. People are way more
- 9:18Speaker 2: open and they're a lot more friendlier. A lot of
- 9:22Speaker 2: it is small talk. So I remember the first time
- 9:24Speaker 2: when I you kind of walk into a store and
- 9:26Speaker 2: I was like, Hi, how are you? And like if
- 9:28Speaker 2: you're ever asked how you are? An ic and like
- 9:30Speaker 2: people are actually asking you, and I remember like starting
- 9:32Speaker 2: to reply and they're not even listening. It's more just
- 9:34Speaker 2: like hey, how are you. It's like a hi, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: and that's like get used to that. But I do
- 9:40Speaker 2: really like it there. My life there is it's a
- 9:42Speaker 2: lot different than an icon in the sense that I
- 9:45Speaker 2: have like all my best friends are an icin and
- 9:47Speaker 2: so many of my family that I'm always doing something,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm always running around, You're trying to see people, whereas
- 9:56Speaker 2: in Boston it's way more focused and it's like a
- 9:59Speaker 2: little bubble. So that's really great for where I am
- 10:04Speaker 2: in my life right now, and I really do like
- 10:06Speaker 2: living there.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Do you have like a separate downstairs area or something.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Yeah, live, yeah, in the basement.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's Ben, right, Ben's your.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Coach, Ben's my coach. Yeah. So live with Ben and Heather,
- 10:18Speaker 2: his wife, and then there are four kids. And I
- 10:22Speaker 2: grew up with, you know, all my siblings in a
- 10:25Speaker 2: loud household. So it really does feel like I'm back home. Yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 2: I like it.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I also, you're twenty six right now. That just blows
- 10:34Speaker 1: my mind. It just blows my mind because you, in
- 10:38Speaker 1: your sport and in your career, have obviously accomplished so
- 10:41Speaker 1: much already, So to be twenty six kind of feeling
- 10:45Speaker 1: as though you're almost living back at home with Ben
- 10:47Speaker 1: and his family, It's got to be a little bit
- 10:50Speaker 1: of a trip.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I'm sure, yeah it is. But I mean I have
- 10:54Speaker 2: left alone in Boston, and I felt like I was
- 10:56Speaker 2: so alone. Yeah, because my whole life in Boston revolves
- 11:01Speaker 2: around the sport and what I do. And I wake
- 11:04Speaker 2: up and I train, and I eat, and I train
- 11:06Speaker 2: more and then I recover and I sleep and I
- 11:09Speaker 2: do it all over again. So that kind of ended
- 11:12Speaker 2: up being the only thing that I was doing and
- 11:16Speaker 2: I mean i'd see them. They really have become my family,
- 11:21Speaker 2: and how the and all the kids, and they're definitely
- 11:25Speaker 2: the Like there's some of the closest people I have
- 11:29Speaker 2: in my life and definitely in Boston. So moving back
- 11:33Speaker 2: in with them was that was huge for me. So
- 11:37Speaker 2: you have I wake up and how they're in, the
- 11:40Speaker 2: kids are up, and when I come home from training,
- 11:43Speaker 2: you know they're home and there's someone to eat dinner with.
- 11:45Speaker 2: And I mean, I'm definitely happier and more settled. And
- 11:50Speaker 2: it gives me that the whole day to focus on
- 11:54Speaker 2: what I am doing, but then come home at night
- 11:56Speaker 2: and just have some family time.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The family time to downtime. Yeah, so talk to me.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Obviously you were a gymnast growing up, but how did
- 12:05Speaker 1: you first find the sport of CrossFit. I feel like
- 12:08Speaker 1: I might have read and congratulations by the way on
- 12:10Speaker 1: the body issue.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Like I read that interview that your grandparents suggested that
- 12:15Speaker 1: you try it.
- 12:15Speaker 2: My mom and my grandma. Yeah, so I did gymnastics
- 12:20Speaker 2: from six to sixteen, and like I said, like very
- 12:23Speaker 2: competitive as a kid. I was always doing something I
- 12:26Speaker 2: like thrive on, having goals and something to work towards
- 12:29Speaker 2: and something that don't want to get better at. And
- 12:31Speaker 2: when I quit gymnastics, I was looking for something else
- 12:34Speaker 2: to do, and I tried a global gram, I tried
- 12:38Speaker 2: spin classes, I tried track, and I love training track,
- 12:41Speaker 2: but I was kind of missing that, like the event
- 12:44Speaker 2: that I was training for, and I just missed training
- 12:48Speaker 2: with a purpose in mind. And the summer of twenty
- 12:52Speaker 2: eleven I wasn't really doing much. Was probably the only
- 12:57Speaker 2: summer and like time in my life that I wasn't
- 13:00Speaker 2: like training really hard. It wasn't being very disciplined. And
- 13:03Speaker 2: even as a kid, when we got the summers off,
- 13:07Speaker 2: I would always make up these exercise programs and I
- 13:10Speaker 2: would exercise as a kid, which I don't think is normal,
- 13:13Speaker 2: but it's something that I've just always loved my entire life.
- 13:16Speaker 2: And that summer, so that was in August that Annie
- 13:22Speaker 2: wins the Games and Annie's from Iceland, and it was
- 13:27Speaker 2: all over the news, all over the media, and they're
- 13:29Speaker 2: showing these clips from the CrossFit Games, and my mom
- 13:31Speaker 2: and my grandma watching the news and they're like, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 2: why don't you try that? Maybe you could be good
- 13:36Speaker 2: at that, just that thing. Yeah, Yeah, And I remember
- 13:39Speaker 2: watching I was like, okay, so I called up the
- 13:41Speaker 2: gym that she was at. It was called boot camp,
- 13:44Speaker 2: so they had boot camp and CrossFit, and like in
- 13:47Speaker 2: my memory, I feel like I showed up the next
- 13:49Speaker 2: day and I tried it, and I loved boot Camp.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I had a harder time with Elements and CrossFit. It
- 13:56Speaker 2: was like a slow pace for me. But after the
- 14:00Speaker 2: three weeks of Elements, I completely fell in love with CrossFit.
- 14:04Speaker 2: So it was I was probably only a couple weeks
- 14:07Speaker 2: in remember calling my mom and be like, I want
- 14:10Speaker 2: to make regionals. And then a couple months later I
- 14:13Speaker 2: remember that goal kind of shifting to Okay, I want
- 14:16Speaker 2: to make the CrossFit Games, and I did that year
- 14:19Speaker 2: or in twenty twelve.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Your first year during CrossFit, I just got gells. That's
- 14:23Speaker 1: just like I mean, it's definitely a testament to you
- 14:26Speaker 1: being one of the kind of women that when you
- 14:29Speaker 1: have a goal in mind and you set your mind
- 14:31Speaker 1: to it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: That I think it definitely is that I was very determined.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I remember, so I started in September and at the
- 14:40Speaker 2: end of it, somewhere around the New Year, I remember
- 14:42Speaker 2: putting on a bracelet. It was one of those just
- 14:44Speaker 2: elastic yellow bracelets. I remember putting it on and that
- 14:48Speaker 2: was going to be my reminder that I was going
- 14:50Speaker 2: to make the CrossFit Games. And I never took it off.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And every time in training, whether it was boot camp
- 14:57Speaker 2: and you know you're holding a playing precision as long
- 14:59Speaker 2: as you can see that bracelet and be like, I'm
- 15:01Speaker 2: going to go to the Crosswit Games, or after CrossFit class,
- 15:04Speaker 2: I'd go up on the treadmill and I'd do like
- 15:06Speaker 2: four hundred meter repeats and every time the hand comes
- 15:08Speaker 2: up and like you feel like you're dying and you
- 15:10Speaker 2: want to slow down. I was like, no, like I'm
- 15:12Speaker 2: going to go to the Like how hard would I
- 15:13Speaker 2: push to go to the Crosswit Games? And I kept
- 15:16Speaker 2: it on until I made the CrossFit Games that may
- 15:19Speaker 2: And so it's part that that I really I was
- 15:23Speaker 2: very determined and I did work so hard for it.
- 15:26Speaker 2: And it's also I still don't think that that's something
- 15:30Speaker 2: that I would have been able to do tip day
- 15:32Speaker 2: because the sport has evolve so much and the competition
- 15:35Speaker 2: has risen so much, and I don't think people can
- 15:38Speaker 2: enter the sport and make the CrossFit games right away
- 15:40Speaker 2: now like we did back then. So part timing but
- 15:43Speaker 2: part determination.
- 15:45Speaker 1: To Grid, I'd mentioned this on the podcast before, but
- 15:48Speaker 1: every day I wear this bracelet that says, have high
- 15:50Speaker 1: effing standards.
- 15:52Speaker 2: And hold yourself to them.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I love it, And when I'm like struggling through something
- 15:55Speaker 1: or whatever, I'll look down and be like, no, like
- 15:58Speaker 1: you're doing what you're supposed to do, Like, yeah, don't
- 16:00Speaker 1: lower your standards for somebody else. Just keep pushing forward
- 16:03Speaker 1: and make sact you're going to be good.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of people can be scared
- 16:06Speaker 2: to have those high standards or scared to chase something
- 16:09Speaker 2: because they might not succeed. But so what, at least
- 16:12Speaker 2: you tried, Like if it doesn't work out, at least
- 16:14Speaker 2: you tried, and if it doesn't work out, then try again,
- 16:17Speaker 2: like now you know better. I feel like I like
- 16:20Speaker 2: I hold myself to very high standards, and I like
- 16:23Speaker 2: chasing something and something that some people might think is
- 16:25Speaker 2: maybe a little bit crazy, you know, but I really yeah,
- 16:30Speaker 2: and I really do believe if you know, if someone
- 16:32Speaker 2: has done something, then there's no reason why you shouldn't
- 16:35Speaker 2: be able to do.
- 16:35Speaker 1: You know what happened to the yellow bracelet?
- 16:39Speaker 2: No, I don't know if you've seen I always compete
- 16:42Speaker 2: with bracelets, Yeah, always, So that year I had that
- 16:44Speaker 2: yellow one. Yeah, and some years we've had so my
- 16:50Speaker 2: coach Ben has these white bracelets. They used to be
- 16:54Speaker 2: called complaint free World ones, so they used to be like,
- 16:58Speaker 2: if you complain or say something negative, you have to
- 17:01Speaker 2: switch arms, so it was more of an awaren it's
- 17:04Speaker 2: just annoying to switch arms. So if you say something like, oh,
- 17:08Speaker 2: like I really don't want to run outside in the
- 17:10Speaker 2: rain today, Like okay, you don't have to say that.
- 17:12Speaker 2: That's like it's like kind of the same way as
- 17:16Speaker 2: positivity is contagious. Again, then someone else is like, oh, yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 2: I really didn't want to run outside in that Like instead,
- 17:23Speaker 2: don't say it at all. It's not something you can control.
- 17:26Speaker 2: You're gonna go out and you're gonna run outside in
- 17:28Speaker 2: the rain if you have to run or get to run.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So you start having these like instead of saying them
- 17:34Speaker 2: out loud, maybe you can adjust them in your head
- 17:37Speaker 2: before they come out loud, so at least you're not
- 17:39Speaker 2: spreading it, and then you know, step by step you
- 17:41Speaker 2: start maybe not singing them and turn them into more positives.
- 17:45Speaker 2: So I've had that really sit on. Some years we've
- 17:48Speaker 2: made special ones, like for our team, so it's like
- 17:50Speaker 2: for me ben Okeef, my agent, and then Cole Brooke,
- 17:56Speaker 2: who I train with. We've had a go Green one,
- 17:58Speaker 2: which basically to us meant that we always work hard,
- 18:02Speaker 2: we always chase everything with everything that we have, regardless
- 18:05Speaker 2: if it's something that we're excited for or if it's
- 18:08Speaker 2: something that we're nervous for because people are always like
- 18:10Speaker 2: kind of on edge, or if it's let's say it's
- 18:13Speaker 2: an event that's not your wheelhouse, then they're like, Okay,
- 18:15Speaker 2: I'm just gonna I'm just gonna get through this. I'm
- 18:17Speaker 2: just gonna, like you know, if they go into it
- 18:20Speaker 2: like way more cautious, whereas if it's a wheelhouse workout,
- 18:24Speaker 2: then they're like, go out it like guns and blazing,
- 18:26Speaker 2: like one hundred percent everything that they have, Like you
- 18:27Speaker 2: should do that regardless of what it is. So we
- 18:30Speaker 2: call it like go green, and we had a blue
- 18:33Speaker 2: one one year, so we each year we have it
- 18:35Speaker 2: blasted on. That means something different to us and it's
- 18:39Speaker 2: just I love that I've done that since my my
- 18:42Speaker 2: very first year and it's just a good reminder. So
- 18:45Speaker 2: whatever it is, for someone else. I love having these
- 18:48Speaker 2: little reminders that you know, we keep pushing through.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I can't help but notice the way that you pivoted
- 18:55Speaker 1: and said I get to run.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah. I think that.
- 18:59Speaker 1: That is something thing that a lot of people struggle
- 19:01Speaker 1: with when things feel hard, right, it's developing that positive mindset,
- 19:06Speaker 1: finding you know, the silver lining or the good side
- 19:08Speaker 1: of things. How especially in a sport that can just
- 19:12Speaker 1: be so tough. I mean, I think on the CrossFit
- 19:15Speaker 1: Games website, and I'm sure it's probably outdated now, but
- 19:19Speaker 1: it says that you have a three hundred and fifteen
- 19:20Speaker 1: pound deadlift? Do you have more than a three hundred
- 19:23Speaker 1: and fifteen pound deadlift?
- 19:24Speaker 2: I've done three twenty five one?
- 19:25Speaker 1: Well they should probably.
- 19:28Speaker 2: So.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I mean, like, obviously, you're constantly striving for these insane goals,
- 19:33Speaker 1: and a lot of the time, all of that hard work,
- 19:35Speaker 1: you can't pr every single day. So how do you
- 19:38Speaker 1: keep that positive mindset when you're just going at these crazy,
- 19:43Speaker 1: crazy goals all the time.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I think a big part of it is that I
- 19:47Speaker 2: am very lucky that I really do love what I do,
- 19:51Speaker 2: and that's something that you know, I want to get
- 19:55Speaker 2: through when I talk is like I hope everyone chases
- 20:00Speaker 2: that thing that kind of like lights something inside of them,
- 20:03Speaker 2: Like when they speak, they're on the edge of their seat,
- 20:05Speaker 2: they can't get the words out fast enough, Like I
- 20:07Speaker 2: want everyone to have that. I rarely ever know what
- 20:11Speaker 2: day it is, because I love today, love I can't
- 20:15Speaker 2: wait to get back to routine. I'm not waiting for holidays,
- 20:17Speaker 2: and I wish that everyone has a job that doesn't
- 20:22Speaker 2: feel like a job, a job that they just can't
- 20:24Speaker 2: wait to get to, and they're not waiting for the
- 20:26Speaker 2: weekend or for Christmas or or something like that. So
- 20:29Speaker 2: I think to start with, I am very lucky that
- 20:31Speaker 2: I get to do what I do. But of course
- 20:35Speaker 2: there are days that I am tired and I do
- 20:38Speaker 2: feel beat up, and I have these training sessions that
- 20:42Speaker 2: I get to do, and I try and think about
- 20:44Speaker 2: that a lot is why do I do what I do?
- 20:47Speaker 2: And one of the biggest things was, like twenty seventeen,
- 20:51Speaker 2: A lot of that year was really hard for me,
- 20:53Speaker 2: and a lot of that year I wasn't enjoying it
- 20:56Speaker 2: like I normally did, and I didn't see a huge
- 20:59Speaker 2: purpose to what I was doing. And at the end
- 21:03Speaker 2: of that year, I got an email from a doctor
- 21:08Speaker 2: at my gym who had seen this girl. She wrote
- 21:11Speaker 2: an essay about she started CrossFit, or to begin with,
- 21:15Speaker 2: she had been depressed. She was sixteen years old. She
- 21:19Speaker 2: kind of just like was going through the motions of
- 21:21Speaker 2: life and kind of like she would just do enough
- 21:25Speaker 2: to get by. She would do enough to pass her exams,
- 21:29Speaker 2: and she wouldn't do much else than that. And then
- 21:32Speaker 2: there one of her cousins or aunt came to town
- 21:36Speaker 2: and was so fired up and excited about this CrossFit
- 21:38Speaker 2: workout that everyone's going to go do, and like dragged
- 21:41Speaker 2: her along to it, and she went, and at first
- 21:45Speaker 2: she thought it was kind of like crazy that, you know,
- 21:48Speaker 2: everyone was pushing so hard and some of them were
- 21:50Speaker 2: doing pull ups until their hands were bleeding, and everyone
- 21:53Speaker 2: was I don't know, she was like kind of crazy,
- 21:56Speaker 2: but then she noticed at the end of it howard
- 21:59Speaker 2: was cheering each other on. However, there was such camaraderie
- 22:02Speaker 2: and everyone welcomed her to the gym, and she ended
- 22:06Speaker 2: up being like, okay, like I might try this thing out.
- 22:08Speaker 2: And she starts doing CrossFit and then she's, you know,
- 22:12Speaker 2: might be listening to podcasts or she's looking through Netflix
- 22:15Speaker 2: and found that CrossFit documentary and she was like, and
- 22:18Speaker 2: I saw Catherine Davis letter talk about being the best
- 22:20Speaker 2: version of herself, and she was like, it really hit home.
- 22:24Speaker 2: And I was like, whether it was in school and training,
- 22:26Speaker 2: I was like, okay, like all right, I'm gonna do
- 22:29Speaker 2: my best now. And she was like, I'd be working
- 22:31Speaker 2: on pull ups and I couldn't do pull ups. And
- 22:33Speaker 2: so I was like, all right, if I just work
- 22:34Speaker 2: harder on pull ups and one day I could do it.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I could do something that before, like I never thought
- 22:38Speaker 2: was possible. And she said it started translating into like
- 22:42Speaker 2: other areas of her life, and that just that I
- 22:47Speaker 2: was like, oh my gosh, if she now has a
- 22:50Speaker 2: better life, she now works, if she can now achieve
- 22:53Speaker 2: things that she before I couldn't do, imagine like her energy.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Imagine if that spreads, if one of her friends is
- 22:59Speaker 2: now like, oh my gosh, like I want to do
- 23:00Speaker 2: that is kind of like a domino effect and all
- 23:03Speaker 2: of that just because I get to do what I
- 23:05Speaker 2: do every single day, and because I'm good at what
- 23:08Speaker 2: I do, I get to be in your podcast and
- 23:11Speaker 2: share my story. I get to have Hebrew and mars
- 23:13Speaker 2: income and film me and be in a crossbit documentary.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I get to share what I do and I get
- 23:18Speaker 2: to impact people, and that to me makes it all
- 23:21Speaker 2: worth it. If that one girl here is my story,
- 23:25Speaker 2: if something resonates something that I do through my own actions,
- 23:28Speaker 2: I get to inspire her. That means more to me
- 23:31Speaker 2: than anything else. And those kinds of things, I know why,
- 23:35Speaker 2: and I know why I do this, and that pushes
- 23:38Speaker 2: me and drives me through those days.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Taking a break from today's episode to give my sponsor,
- 23:50Speaker 1: Athletic Greens a little bit of love. I get a
- 23:53Speaker 1: lot of messages asking me if you can do something
- 23:56Speaker 1: with Athletic Greens instead of just simply shaking it up
- 23:59Speaker 1: with ten outs of water, And the answer is, of
- 24:01Speaker 1: course yes. Just like you can put protein powder into
- 24:05Speaker 1: a smoothie, you can certainly add athletic greens into a
- 24:08Speaker 1: smoothie as well. My go to when it comes to
- 24:11Speaker 1: throwing it in the blender is doing it with a
- 24:13Speaker 1: scoop of vanilla protein powder, the Athletic Greens powder, about
- 24:17Speaker 1: half to three quarters of a frozen banana, some ice cubes,
- 24:20Speaker 1: a half a cup of almond milk, and blend. It's
- 24:22Speaker 1: just that simple. And what's so great about that is
- 24:25Speaker 1: then it becomes an entire meal. One single serving of
- 24:29Speaker 1: Athletic Greens has twelve servings of fruits and vegetables. It's
- 24:32Speaker 1: also got adapted in superfoods, prebiotics, probiotics, So right there
- 24:37Speaker 1: in that smoothie, it's got everything you need to really
- 24:40Speaker 1: start the day off. Right now, let me know if
- 24:42Speaker 1: you're making your own Athletic Greens filled smoothies at home,
- 24:46Speaker 1: send me your recipes. I want to try them myself.
- 24:49Speaker 1: If you haven't grabbed yours yet, you have gotta try
- 24:51Speaker 1: it today. They are offering Hurdle listeners an awesome deal
- 24:56Speaker 1: twenty travel packs a seventy nine dollars value, absolutely free
- 25:00Speaker 1: with your first purchase. Just head on over to Athleticgreens

- 25:08Speaker 1: Hurdle to get yours today, no code necessary, Let's get
- 25:13Speaker 1: back to it. Twenty seventeen is after you've already won
- 25:23Speaker 1: the Crossway Games, So I want to just dial it
- 25:26Speaker 1: back just a smidge to kind of the earlier part
- 25:30Speaker 1: of your career, right because you go to the games
- 25:31Speaker 1: in twenty twelve, yep, go to the games in twenty thirteen,
- 25:35Speaker 1: and then in twenty fourteen, you don't go to the games.
- 25:38Speaker 1: How was that for you?
- 25:39Speaker 2: So? Yeah, I think I was good at Crossford right away,
- 25:45Speaker 2: and I think that was kind of dangerous for me
- 25:48Speaker 2: because I think that because I had that kind of
- 25:52Speaker 2: early success with the regional stages and I'd make it
- 25:55Speaker 2: to the Games. I liked being a Crossby Games athlete
- 25:59Speaker 2: and being able to make in it to the Games.
- 26:02Speaker 2: The rest of the year, I'm Across at Games athlete,
- 26:04Speaker 2: and then again in twenty thirteen the same thing. And
- 26:07Speaker 2: I think it can be kind of easy to settle
- 26:09Speaker 2: in on that. I didn't think I ever, you know,
- 26:12Speaker 2: thought i'd go win the games. But I was kind
- 26:15Speaker 2: of like, you can become content. And I was doing
- 26:19Speaker 2: a lot of things. I was a full time student,
- 26:21Speaker 2: I was a full time coach. I was trying to
- 26:22Speaker 2: train for Across A Games showing up at regionals that year.
- 26:29Speaker 2: We got to know the events a couple weeks in advance,
- 26:31Speaker 2: and my pulling isn't the greatest and definitely wasn't and
- 26:37Speaker 2: ten legless rope climbs for time show up and normally
- 26:40Speaker 2: at least things show up in like with other events,
- 26:43Speaker 2: or you know, they might show up with power cleans
- 26:45Speaker 2: or with running, so if my rope climbs are bad,
- 26:48Speaker 2: I can make up time in other places. And this
- 26:50Speaker 2: workout was just ten legless rope climbs and there was
- 26:53Speaker 2: nowhere to hide. And that was definitely before I kind
- 26:59Speaker 2: of I had my mentality now where I was very
- 27:02Speaker 2: focused on other girls. I'd be scared of workouts. I
- 27:06Speaker 2: was focused on where I was on the leader board,
- 27:09Speaker 2: and I knew coming into that I was like, if
- 27:11Speaker 2: I don't perform well enough in this event, like this
- 27:14Speaker 2: could be the event that keeps me out of the
- 27:16Speaker 2: crossbit game. So I was already like very nervous about it.
- 27:19Speaker 2: And that year I was definitely in better shape than
- 27:22Speaker 2: I'd ever been before, in better shape than I wasn't
- 27:25Speaker 2: in twelve and thirteen. So I start off the regionals weekend.
- 27:28Speaker 2: It's a three day weekend and it had seven events,
- 27:31Speaker 2: and I am doing so well. I think I was
- 27:35Speaker 2: in first place after day one, and every single interview
- 27:38Speaker 2: that anyone had done with me, they're always like like wow,
- 27:41Speaker 2: like congratulations, like you're really killing this, like how do
- 27:44Speaker 2: you feel? And all my responses were always like like oh,
- 27:47Speaker 2: thank you. I'm just like we'll see how I do tomorrow.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I'm just like focusing on the world climes. Like everything
- 27:52Speaker 2: was always about the world climes and about the world climes.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I could never just sit there and be like thank you,
- 27:57Speaker 2: like I did well on this event, like happy about it,
- 27:59Speaker 2: And sure enough the workout comes along and I'm doing okay.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I was trying to like, of course, like with competition
- 28:07Speaker 2: and stuff, you go out maybe faster than you intended to.
- 28:10Speaker 2: And then on the seventh rope climb, it was either
- 28:12Speaker 2: the seventh or the aid. I failed one. Like I
- 28:15Speaker 2: made it almost all the way to the top, and
- 28:17Speaker 2: you have to kind of like let go of one
- 28:19Speaker 2: hand hit the beam to get to get it counted.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And I knew if i'd like go of one hand,
- 28:25Speaker 2: I didn't have enough strength to just like hold on,
- 28:27Speaker 2: but I tried, and I just like slid down the
- 28:30Speaker 2: whole rope and immediately there's minutes left of the workout,
- 28:33Speaker 2: like the clock is still ticking, and immediately I start
- 28:36Speaker 2: bawling my eyes up because I was like this is it,
- 28:37Speaker 2: Like I didn't make the CrossFit games and it's so
- 28:40Speaker 2: crazy to think back, like we miss lifts all the time,
- 28:43Speaker 2: we miss rope combs all the time. You know, you
- 28:45Speaker 2: stand up and you take a couple of deep breaths
- 28:47Speaker 2: and you try again. But in that moment, I was
- 28:50Speaker 2: just like, immediately, I'm not gonna make the CrossFit Games,
- 28:54Speaker 2: and sure enough I didn't. And at the time, that's
- 28:58Speaker 2: all I wanted to do. I didn't have any plans
- 29:00Speaker 2: for the summer. I just wanted to train all summer.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I just wanted to go to the Crossmic Games. I
- 29:04Speaker 2: wanted to compete, you know, so that in that moment
- 29:09Speaker 2: that was kind of the hardest thing that could have
- 29:11Speaker 2: happened to me.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's a hurdle moment for sure, and
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's it's it's interesting because it's one of those scenarios often,
- 29:18Speaker 1: as we talk about on the podcast, where at the
- 29:20Speaker 1: time it felt like such a failure for you, like
- 29:23Speaker 1: you and you went into it. And I've done this
- 29:24Speaker 1: before as well, like last week on a long run
- 29:27Speaker 1: that I was doing, toward the end of the like
- 29:29Speaker 1: the middle of the run, I just started to feel
- 29:32Speaker 1: the wheels coming off, like it was like it's really humid,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I feel really tired. My right quad feels heavy, and
- 29:38Speaker 1: then like as time went on, it was just one
- 29:42Speaker 1: thing after another, and I was just like the failure
- 29:45Speaker 1: mentality was there, and I realized that when the run ended,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and I like literally sat on a park bench and
- 29:52Speaker 1: bowled my eyes out. I was like, you succumbed to
- 29:56Speaker 1: it instead of just taking it one thing at a
- 29:59Speaker 1: time and under standing that you'll get to learn from this,
- 30:01Speaker 1: and yeah, a lot of the tools that it seems
- 30:03Speaker 1: like you use as well now when things go not
- 30:06Speaker 1: as plan, Yeah, I just you know, let go. And
- 30:09Speaker 1: so now having that experience of the Games in twenty
- 30:14Speaker 1: fourteen and not going to the Games in twenty fourteen,
- 30:17Speaker 1: you know how to handle when that seventh or eighth
- 30:21Speaker 1: rope client doesn't go as planned.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you know the same right after So Ben wasn't
- 30:26Speaker 2: my coach at the time. I had done like a
- 30:28Speaker 2: training camp with him and his team, so I knew him,
- 30:31Speaker 2: but he wasn't my coach. And after those regionals he
- 30:36Speaker 2: texted me and he was like, hey, like, I know
- 30:38Speaker 2: this isn't what you wanted. You probably can't see it
- 30:41Speaker 2: right now, but like this could be the best thing
- 30:42Speaker 2: that I've happened to you, and I remember just reading
- 30:45Speaker 2: that text and I was so mad at him. I
- 30:48Speaker 2: couldn't believe that he could even think that, like, how
- 30:50Speaker 2: could this possibly be a good thing or anything could
- 30:53Speaker 2: come out of this? And I didn't probably didn't respawn
- 30:56Speaker 2: for at least a week, and I definitely did not
- 31:00Speaker 2: see that anything good could come out of that. So
- 31:03Speaker 2: but after that, I kind of went on vacation with
- 31:07Speaker 2: my dad and my family, and then I came back and.
- 31:12Speaker 1: How did you come back? Like what was coming back?
- 31:15Speaker 2: Like? Yeah, I hated it, Yeah, because I hated the
- 31:20Speaker 2: fact that other people were going to the gym and
- 31:23Speaker 2: training for the CrossFit Games and what was I doing.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I was just going to the gym to train, Like
- 31:29Speaker 2: I absolutely hated it. And I think what I did
- 31:31Speaker 2: was Annie was training for the CrossFit Games, and I
- 31:34Speaker 2: just pretended that I was going. I literally just lied
- 31:37Speaker 2: to myself. I just pretended that I was going to
- 31:39Speaker 2: across for games too. I was probably the best workout
- 31:42Speaker 2: partner she could have found because I wasn't like a competition,
- 31:44Speaker 2: but I would push her every single day. And at
- 31:48Speaker 2: the same time, she really pulled me out of the
- 31:50Speaker 2: hole that I was in because I hated going to
- 31:53Speaker 2: the gym, but she made it fun for me and
- 31:54Speaker 2: she pushed me. And that then of course, like she
- 31:58Speaker 2: went to the Games, and I didn't really watch any
- 32:01Speaker 2: of the games, but I remember watching the last event
- 32:05Speaker 2: and I was kind of just like watching it for
- 32:06Speaker 2: my bed, and remember, you know, CAMEO wins the Games,
- 32:09Speaker 2: and I shut my computer and I remember waking up
- 32:13Speaker 2: the morning after and it was like a million pounds
- 32:15Speaker 2: were off my chest because no one hadmitted to the Games,
- 32:18Speaker 2: and it was a yeah, it was a clean slate,
- 32:21Speaker 2: and I think I kind of had a head start
- 32:22Speaker 2: in that year because other people had gone at the Games.
- 32:26Speaker 2: And it's really hard. It's a really hard mental like
- 32:29Speaker 2: you have like a mental like let because you're so excited,
- 32:31Speaker 2: you trained so hard, and you always have to come
- 32:33Speaker 2: back down after it, and your body takes a beating
- 32:36Speaker 2: at the Games and it takes like weeks and up
- 32:38Speaker 2: to a month to just recover from that. And I
- 32:42Speaker 2: had kind of trained for the Games but not competed,
- 32:44Speaker 2: so I was ready to go.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And I go through the depression phase. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The same things happened after a marathon when you've been
- 32:52Speaker 1: training for three four months, just like you're with this
- 32:54Speaker 1: one goal. Then you run the marathon and you don't
- 32:57Speaker 1: know what to do with yourself. You're like, I have
- 32:58Speaker 1: all this time and you don't want to get right
- 33:00Speaker 1: back to doing what you were already doing. So it's hard.
- 33:03Speaker 2: So I think not making it really showed me how
- 33:07Speaker 2: much I wanted to be there. It showed me what
- 33:09Speaker 2: I was willing to do to get there, and I,
- 33:14Speaker 2: you know, made a promise to myself that I never
- 33:17Speaker 2: wanted to not make it if I was trying in it.
- 33:19Speaker 2: I think it kind of elevated me to a different level.
- 33:23Speaker 2: And I was so willing to learn, and I was
- 33:25Speaker 2: so willing to work hard, and you know, I want
- 33:29Speaker 2: I did a couple of training camps that fall, so
- 33:32Speaker 2: the fall of twenty fourteen, and I remember just kind
- 33:36Speaker 2: of like people always told me that my coach was
- 33:39Speaker 2: like he only takes four athletes, like he doesn't take
- 33:41Speaker 2: any more athletes, which is still true to this day.
- 33:44Speaker 2: But I remember being like, I didn't have a coach
- 33:47Speaker 2: right now, and I can either just you know, if
- 33:52Speaker 2: I don't ask, I'm just I'm not going to have
- 33:54Speaker 2: a coach, or I can go ask and either you
- 33:57Speaker 2: can say yes and I'll have a coach, or you'll
- 33:59Speaker 2: say no, and it's still don't have a coach. I
- 34:01Speaker 2: remember walking into his office and asking him if he
- 34:03Speaker 2: wanted to be my coach, and he didn't say yes
- 34:07Speaker 2: right away. He said he would like try it out
- 34:09Speaker 2: and he would send me some programming and see how
- 34:11Speaker 2: it'd work out. And at the end of that year,
- 34:13Speaker 2: he's like, yeah, I want to be your coach.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I'll do it.
- 34:15Speaker 2: And yeah. So I've been a team ever since then,
- 34:18Speaker 2: and that was great. So we started working a lot
- 34:20Speaker 2: on He works a lot on mindset and characteristics and
- 34:24Speaker 2: what we focus on and what we don't. And I
- 34:27Speaker 2: think that year and I started reading a lot too,
- 34:31Speaker 2: a lot of sports biography, sports psychology, and I think
- 34:34Speaker 2: it all kind of just like came together in one thing,
- 34:37Speaker 2: and I just truly loved what I was doing. And
- 34:42Speaker 2: other like, I've always been a great student, like I
- 34:45Speaker 2: love learning. I's got great grades. And that year i'd
- 34:49Speaker 2: been doing law and it was the first time in
- 34:52Speaker 2: my entire life I failed an exam and I was
- 34:56Speaker 2: shocked by it. And that's another thing that like, I
- 34:59Speaker 2: think things happened for a reason. I think I wasn't
- 35:01Speaker 2: supposed to make the Games that year. I think I
- 35:04Speaker 2: was supposed to fail that exam because other way, if
- 35:07Speaker 2: I would have passed, I would have kept going. And
- 35:10Speaker 2: because I failed, I was like, you know what, Like
- 35:11Speaker 2: I am going to take these six months off this semester.
- 35:14Speaker 2: I don't know what I want to do in school.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I know when do CrossFit, And I think the combination
- 35:19Speaker 2: of that paired with like I didn't make the games
- 35:22Speaker 2: and I knew I wanted to do CrossFit. I just
- 35:24Speaker 2: I gave it everything that I had, and I spent
- 35:26Speaker 2: I had that that semester off. So I spent more
- 35:29Speaker 2: time with Ben training with He had a great team
- 35:33Speaker 2: at Saphany that I was training with that pushed me
- 35:35Speaker 2: a lot. And yeah, we end up showing up the
- 35:40Speaker 2: twenty fifteen games and we won that games.
- 35:41Speaker 1: And we just won the games. No it sounds yeah,
- 35:45Speaker 1: I have to ask then, So I was like, you
- 35:46Speaker 1: win twenty fifteen, you want you win twenty sixteen? Why
- 35:50Speaker 1: is training in twenty seventeen so blah for you?
- 35:54Speaker 2: As you mentioned, I lost my grandma in twenty sixteen,
- 35:59Speaker 2: which was the hardest thing and the hardest thing that's
- 36:03Speaker 2: ever happened to me. And something that I don't think
- 36:05Speaker 2: I'll ever completely get over. But that happened in April
- 36:10Speaker 2: of twenty sixteen, and kind of to cope with that,
- 36:15Speaker 2: I never really dealt with it. I just went back
- 36:18Speaker 2: to Boston and I just dove into training and that's
- 36:21Speaker 2: all I did. I just I did everything for her.
- 36:25Speaker 2: I turned harder for her, and I pushed for her,
- 36:28Speaker 2: and at the games, like I competed for her, and
- 36:33Speaker 2: I definitely like I can feel her so much. I
- 36:35Speaker 2: can always feel her with me, even more when I compete,
- 36:38Speaker 2: like I can literally like I can feel her holding
- 36:40Speaker 2: my hand, I can feel her energy there. And sometimes
- 36:42Speaker 2: I I'm off the field and I'm like, holy crap,
- 36:45Speaker 2: Like I have no clue how I pulled through red
- 36:47Speaker 2: at the right second or how I lifted that, and
- 36:49Speaker 2: I always came off and I was like, I was like,
- 36:51Speaker 2: how did I do that? I'm like, that was her,
- 36:54Speaker 2: you know. But I did everything for her. And then
- 36:56Speaker 2: after the games, you know, we win and it didn't
- 37:00Speaker 2: bring her back, and I kind of just like lost
- 37:03Speaker 2: a sense of like, all right, you know what am
- 37:05Speaker 2: I doing? What is this? And the same like kind
- 37:08Speaker 2: of what you were saying, like every single second of
- 37:10Speaker 2: every single day was directed towards something and I didn't
- 37:13Speaker 2: have time to think about it. And then after the Games,
- 37:15Speaker 2: I just had so much time and it was just
- 37:19Speaker 2: a hard year for me, and I didn't see a
- 37:20Speaker 2: purpose in what I was doing. I was very tired.
- 37:25Speaker 2: I don't know, I just I think a big part
- 37:27Speaker 2: of is too like you won and or we won
- 37:30Speaker 2: and we want again, and I don't know, there was
- 37:33Speaker 2: it was just not a good I think it's a
- 37:36Speaker 2: combination of a lot of things, but that was definitely
- 37:38Speaker 2: the biggest thing for for me.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for sure. And I mean I think it's firstly, uh,
- 37:46Speaker 1: it's always hard to lose someone that you love and
- 37:49Speaker 1: like figure out how to shift life from what you knew. Yeah,
- 37:55Speaker 1: for me, like I wear this wedding day, my Poppy's
- 37:57Speaker 1: wedding damn my finger every day and inside it says
- 38:01Speaker 1: inscribed from Eileen to Murray and literally the same thing
- 38:05Speaker 1: as you. Like whenever I'm going through a tough time,
- 38:07Speaker 1: back to our bracelet conversation, I'll like or if I'm anxious,
- 38:10Speaker 1: I'll like sit wherever I am and just like spin
- 38:13Speaker 1: this ring out of my finger and I look for
- 38:16Speaker 1: like strength and just like this idea that you know,
- 38:19Speaker 1: they're always with me no matter where I go, and
- 38:21Speaker 1: I can carry that to move forward. And I find
- 38:25Speaker 1: it to be very admirable for you to be able
- 38:28Speaker 1: to learn and understand that's like that was a reason
- 38:33Speaker 1: or a part of the reason why you were struggling
- 38:35Speaker 1: and then to find a greater purpose, right because the
- 38:39Speaker 1: important thing that you learned from that after you read
- 38:42Speaker 1: that email from the person at the gym, was that
- 38:46Speaker 1: you have the opportunity again, this chance to inspire other people.
- 38:52Speaker 1: And that truly is what your grandmother would want you
- 38:55Speaker 1: to focus on.
- 38:56Speaker 2: She was the biggest light that I know in this world,
- 38:58Speaker 2: biggest of rightist and that's something that I wish everyone
- 39:02Speaker 2: could have gotten to know her. I really truly do
- 39:04Speaker 2: and this so I feel like the only way that
- 39:06Speaker 2: I can do that is to live through her, you know,
- 39:09Speaker 2: and to share her story and share her light.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Breaking into today's episode to give my sponsor Whoop a
- 39:19Speaker 1: little bit of love, I've got to be honest, the
- 39:21Speaker 1: last few months using Whoop have been an eye opener
- 39:25Speaker 1: into some of the patterns and the habits that I
- 39:27Speaker 1: didn't actually even realize I had. Every morning when you
- 39:32Speaker 1: wake up and you open the Whoop app, you have
- 39:34Speaker 1: the opportunity as the user to input some things like
- 39:37Speaker 1: did you have two or more caffeinated beverages? Did you
- 39:40Speaker 1: have alcoholic drinks within two hours of bedtime? Read on
- 39:43Speaker 1: a not screen device, work on a screen device while
- 39:45Speaker 1: in bed. And so every day I have to sit
- 39:48Speaker 1: there and be honest with myself about some of my
- 39:52Speaker 1: maybe not the best habits. I realized that I was
- 39:55Speaker 1: definitely having too much wine. The company even reports that
- 39:59Speaker 1: Whoop users consume alcohol seventy nine percent less often before
- 40:04Speaker 1: bed after understanding the impact that it has on the body.
- 40:08Speaker 1: What I'm trying to say is that Whoop is encouraging
- 40:11Speaker 1: me to live a smarter and healthier life. They're offering
- 40:15Speaker 1: Hurdle listeners a really awesome deal. It is a free
- 40:18Speaker 1: whoopstrap three point zero as well as fifteen percent off
- 40:23Speaker 1: any membership using the code Hurdle at checkout. Just head
- 40:27Speaker 1: on over to woop dot com, that's whoop dot com
- 40:31Speaker 1: and use the code Hurdle at checkout for fifteen percent
- 40:34Speaker 1: off and to optimize the way you train. Tell me
- 40:43Speaker 1: and you started to talk a little bit about this
- 40:45Speaker 1: earlier kind of what a day looks like for you, You said, like,
- 40:49Speaker 1: I train, I eat, I train, I come home, I
- 40:52Speaker 1: have family time. So these days, what does a typical
- 40:58Speaker 1: day look like for you?
- 40:59Speaker 2: Typical day be I wake up somewhere between six and seven,
- 41:04Speaker 2: and I normally start my day with some kind of
- 41:07Speaker 2: monostructural thing, whether that is go to the pool, whether
- 41:11Speaker 2: that's do a bike workout or do a running workout.
- 41:16Speaker 2: So that's the first thing that I do. And after that,
- 41:19Speaker 2: I come back home and I have breakfast. And I
- 41:22Speaker 2: love my slow mornings and I love being able to
- 41:25Speaker 2: cook breakfast, sit down. I normally have my cup of
- 41:28Speaker 2: coffee while I read a page out of the Daily Stoic,
- 41:33Speaker 2: and I love just kind of I love reading and
- 41:35Speaker 2: listening to things and kind of getting your mind to
- 41:38Speaker 2: think about something. And sometimes I journal. I kind of
- 41:43Speaker 2: go on phases whether I like to journal or not,
- 41:45Speaker 2: but the Dayly Stoic is I at least that one
- 41:48Speaker 2: page a day. And then I have my breakfast. I
- 41:52Speaker 2: might like scroll through Instagram, or I do a lot
- 41:55Speaker 2: of calling someone over breakfast just because of the time change.
- 41:59Speaker 2: It's a great time to call my dad or my
- 42:00Speaker 2: mom or any of my friends.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Don't glaze over what you're eating for breakfast.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Oh okay, I always eat the same thing I want to, yeah,
- 42:08Speaker 2: every single morning. So I love making an oat milk latte,
- 42:11Speaker 2: So oat milk and then just a shot of espresso.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I have two eggs with egg whites, which I kind
- 42:17Speaker 2: of just like fry, and I put that over a
- 42:20Speaker 2: bed of green So I just put like a lot
- 42:23Speaker 2: of greens, kale, spinach, whatever, and that just kind of
- 42:28Speaker 2: like it makes me really happy that I'm getting in
- 42:30Speaker 2: a lot of greens in my body. Just yeah, at least,
- 42:33Speaker 2: like if everything else would go wrong during the day,
- 42:35Speaker 2: at least I got in my greens in the morning.
- 42:37Speaker 2: And then I put some apples and peppers and all
- 42:39Speaker 2: that's just fresh, a little bit of issamaic and then
- 42:42Speaker 2: I put the eggs over that, and then with that
- 42:44Speaker 2: I have oatmeal and I'm like a little kid with it.
- 42:48Speaker 2: But I love having my oatmeal with whole milk. That's
- 42:51Speaker 2: it's probably called porridge. So that's my breakfast. And salt.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Put a little bit of salt in your oatmeal makes
- 42:58Speaker 2: it so much better. And then just a big glass
- 43:00Speaker 2: of water and then on my way to the gym
- 43:03Speaker 2: all have pre workout. I'll take the Ascent pre workout
- 43:07Speaker 2: every morning, which is nothing but caffeine. So I don't
- 43:11Speaker 2: like the jitters. I don't like anything extra. I just
- 43:13Speaker 2: want caffeine. The raspberry lemon after. Yeah, that's my favorite.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Drink this morning. I drink it before everything.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Oh yeah nice, Yeah, I like that. That's almost my favorite.
- 43:24Speaker 2: And they actually just gave me two new flavors today
- 43:26Speaker 2: that I'm super excited about. I tried one, which I love.
- 43:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna try the other one tomorrow and or I
- 43:33Speaker 2: have the z Va pre one. Sometimes I do that
- 43:37Speaker 2: over breakfast too. I do like my caffeine. I feel
- 43:40Speaker 2: like Annie One's we were staying together in Copenahan and
- 43:44Speaker 2: she's like, Katherine, you're the first person that makes me
- 43:46Speaker 2: feel really good about my caffeine intake. And I was like,
- 43:48Speaker 2: I don't know, that's like a compliment or not. I
- 43:50Speaker 2: should start watching it.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Yeah, like you raise your voice like you were Annie
- 43:54Speaker 1: and actually very much. Yeah. Yeah, so you go to
- 43:59Speaker 1: the gym.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I normally am at the gym by
- 44:03Speaker 2: like nine thirty ten, and then Ben has always blocked
- 44:10Speaker 2: out two hours for me normally between like eleven oh
- 44:13Speaker 2: one and so like I want to be able to
- 44:15Speaker 2: use those hours because he is so busy, and I
- 44:17Speaker 2: love being able to work with him, like I love
- 44:20Speaker 2: being coached. I love being like a love life feedback.
- 44:23Speaker 2: I love being held to like like that higher standard
- 44:26Speaker 2: I just love. So I try and like always be
- 44:28Speaker 2: there in early so that I can finish all my
- 44:30Speaker 2: warm up and be completely ready for when he shows up.
- 44:34Speaker 2: And then after that session, I'll normally sit down and
- 44:37Speaker 2: have some lunch and depending on what I have left,
- 44:40Speaker 2: or I might go home and I might just sit
- 44:43Speaker 2: at the gym, sit in the norma text, have some lunch,
- 44:46Speaker 2: and then do my second session. And after that, I
- 44:52Speaker 2: try and at least once a day sit in the
- 44:54Speaker 2: norma text and I try and do it at the gym.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Like sometimes I go through fate when I go home,
- 44:59Speaker 2: but I like keeping home is home, like I like
- 45:02Speaker 2: finishing my work day and then when I go home
- 45:05Speaker 2: being able to just completely relax. So I do like
- 45:09Speaker 2: every now and then I'll do I have this mobility up,
- 45:13Speaker 2: it's go mobility. So that's something that I struggle with,
- 45:17Speaker 2: like stretching and mobilizing after and that one has like
- 45:20Speaker 2: a daily protocol where literally you can put an eight
- 45:22Speaker 2: minute swallow or twenty two. So if I don't have
- 45:24Speaker 2: any time, I'll put in the eight. At least I'm
- 45:25Speaker 2: getting in some stretching in norma teching, and if I
- 45:29Speaker 2: have it can be thirty minutes or it gonna be
- 45:31Speaker 2: an hour, just depending on what I'm doing. But I
- 45:34Speaker 2: do feel a difference even if it's just like even
- 45:38Speaker 2: if it was just my mind. If it's comfortable, I
- 45:41Speaker 2: don't mind the Placibo effect. But I actually do think
- 45:43Speaker 2: that it works. So I try and be home and
- 45:46Speaker 2: then I do actually like sauna too, so I have
- 45:48Speaker 2: a global gym membership, so sometimes on the way home,
- 45:51Speaker 2: I'll go sit in the sauna and that's kind of
- 45:53Speaker 2: like my mean time. I love like sitting in there
- 45:56Speaker 2: for thirty minutes. I like the heat, I like the sweat.
- 45:58Speaker 2: I like that I just get to read and like
- 46:00Speaker 2: peace and quiet. And then you know, if I'm home
- 46:03Speaker 2: before six o'clock or so, and then we just sit
- 46:06Speaker 2: down and have dinner and then whatever, I just relax
- 46:10Speaker 2: it and I watch the mindless stuff for wading. Actually,
- 46:15Speaker 2: when I'm in Boston, I get to pretty early, so
- 46:17Speaker 2: like I might be in bed by nine and then
- 46:20Speaker 2: maybe lights out by nine point thirty. I think that's
- 46:23Speaker 2: part that, like I wake up earlier here, and I
- 46:26Speaker 2: feel the day starts earlier in Boston. And also just
- 46:30Speaker 2: like the bridge rounds go to bed earlier. That's just
- 46:31Speaker 2: when like everyone starts winding down, everyone goes to bed
- 46:34Speaker 2: and in ice, and everyone stays up way longer and
- 46:37Speaker 2: sleeps in way longer. But I really like my routine
- 46:41Speaker 2: here and I feel a lot better when I'm in
- 46:43Speaker 2: that routine.
- 46:44Speaker 1: I love the segmentation of work versus home, and I
- 46:48Speaker 1: always think it's interesting because obviously you know that like athletes,
- 46:52Speaker 1: full time job is being an athlete, Like that is
- 46:54Speaker 1: your job, that's what you do. But sometimes to go
- 46:57Speaker 1: hand in hand with that, it can be a little differ,
- 47:00Speaker 1: especially and in case when you get injured. So have
- 47:04Speaker 1: you dealt with any injuries that have made your job
- 47:07Speaker 1: really hard?
- 47:08Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh, I was injured for half the half
- 47:10Speaker 2: of this year.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So I came injured out of last year's games,
- 47:14Speaker 2: Like I wasn't able to use my shoulders at all,
- 47:19Speaker 2: and that was six months until I was doing any
- 47:22Speaker 2: kind of like overhead stuff or hanging or any pull
- 47:25Speaker 2: ups or anything like that. So it's that's probably the
- 47:30Speaker 2: hardest things that you know, athletes can go through because
- 47:34Speaker 2: it is our bodies and we need our bodies so much,
- 47:36Speaker 2: and it's hard to stay motivated when I don't know,
- 47:41Speaker 2: when you're always doing something to compromise and you can't
- 47:44Speaker 2: train exec like you want to train, and those thoughts
- 47:47Speaker 2: like pop into your head, like you know, am I
- 47:49Speaker 2: gonna sit this season out? You know, am I gonna
- 47:52Speaker 2: be able to train? And if I can't get everything together?
- 47:55Speaker 2: Like what am I going to look like at the
- 47:56Speaker 2: end of like at the games or whatever? So yeah,
- 47:59Speaker 2: those are I can't remember what the question was, but
- 48:02Speaker 2: they're super hard. Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Injuries. Yeah, when you weren't able to train the way
- 48:06Speaker 1: that you had hoped that you could train, Yeah, how
- 48:09Speaker 1: were you kind of delegating your time a little bit?
- 48:12Speaker 2: Differently, I try and make something really good out of it.
- 48:17Speaker 2: So I'm like, Okay, if I can't use my shoulders,
- 48:19Speaker 2: what good come out of this? And I'm like, I'm
- 48:22Speaker 2: going to become stronger than I've ever been before, because
- 48:25Speaker 2: if I were able to use my shoulders, I'd be
- 48:27Speaker 2: doing all this gymnastic stuff and over it stuff and
- 48:29Speaker 2: more workouts, and I would never dedicate so much time
- 48:33Speaker 2: to my legs and my squatting strength if I were
- 48:37Speaker 2: able to use my shoulders. So I decided to use that,
- 48:39Speaker 2: and we squatted more than I ever have before, and
- 48:42Speaker 2: we did come into this game stronger than I ever before.
- 48:44Speaker 2: So if there's anything good that can come out of that,
- 48:48Speaker 2: I'll use it.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Talk to me about what was the most challenging thing,
- 48:53Speaker 1: would you say, or the challenging event that you had
- 48:55Speaker 1: at the Games this year?
- 48:56Speaker 2: This year, hmm, definitely the sprint event, just because I
- 49:02Speaker 2: was sitting outside the top ten, they were cutting into
- 49:05Speaker 2: the ten and a sprint event is not in my wheelhouse.
- 49:10Speaker 2: And it hasn't been any kind of sprint events like
- 49:12Speaker 2: that that have shown up at the Games. Have I
- 49:14Speaker 2: haven't been placing in the top but I really I
- 49:17Speaker 2: needed to move myself from outside top ten and into
- 49:20Speaker 2: the top ten if I wanted to compete. So I
- 49:22Speaker 2: was fully aware of walking onto that field that this
- 49:25Speaker 2: could be the last time that I was taking the field.
- 49:28Speaker 1: In that moment, do you go to Catherine, who's about
- 49:33Speaker 1: to do the rope times?
- 49:34Speaker 2: No, you mean in the twenty fourteen one, like, do
- 49:37Speaker 2: you mentally I never want to be I never want
- 49:40Speaker 2: to be her again.
- 49:41Speaker 1: So yeah, I think that's like a really beautiful thing,
- 49:44Speaker 1: right because again, like let's think about what you learn
- 49:46Speaker 1: from that. You're like, nope, like never gonna yeah, it's.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Never doesn't help me, like I and I can't treat that.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Like when I walk down the field, I can't. I
- 49:55Speaker 2: just knew I was running for my life and I
- 49:57Speaker 2: can't be thinking how fast anyone else is gonna go.
- 49:59Speaker 2: I can't thinking I can't do anything spectacular or special.
- 50:04Speaker 2: All I can do is run for my life. And
- 50:08Speaker 2: you know what, how do I do that? How do
- 50:09Speaker 2: I get from here? So you have to run at
- 50:11Speaker 2: the end of the field and was always exact, and
- 50:13Speaker 2: then you start or you finished back where you started.
- 50:17Speaker 2: And I was like, all right, how can I make
- 50:18Speaker 2: it back to this spot as fast as I possibly can?
- 50:22Speaker 2: And I looked at the first what's it called that?
- 50:25Speaker 2: It's a kind of like a buoy on grass. Yeah, literally,
- 50:29Speaker 2: that was the word I was thinking of, was booie.
- 50:30Speaker 2: It's not a booie exactly what you're talking about. Pylon,
- 50:34Speaker 2: that's what it is. So I literally looked at the
- 50:37Speaker 2: pile and I was like, I'm going to get to
- 50:38Speaker 2: that pile in as fast as I can. As soon
- 50:40Speaker 2: as I hit that pilon, I'm going to make to
- 50:42Speaker 2: that pilon as fast. I was just making it pilons
- 50:44Speaker 2: pound as fast as I humanly possibly could. And once
- 50:49Speaker 2: I finish that, I felt really weird. Finished my first sprint,
- 50:52Speaker 2: like I just ran as fast as I can and
- 50:55Speaker 2: I wasn't sure where I was. I was like, I'm
- 50:57Speaker 2: either sitting in tenth or eleventh and the next make
- 51:00Speaker 2: it onto the next round of the sprints, and I
- 51:04Speaker 2: kind of just like sat down on the sidelines by myself,
- 51:07Speaker 2: and I just I didn't know. I was just waiting
- 51:11Speaker 2: for the results. And they start calling up the people's
- 51:14Speaker 2: and that had made it through, and finally intent they're
- 51:18Speaker 2: like caturing and out. I was so surprised, and I
- 51:23Speaker 2: stand up and it's probably the most like I was
- 51:26Speaker 2: so thankful to have made it through, and I was
- 51:29Speaker 2: like all right, like I got another shot to fight,
- 51:33Speaker 2: Like I got another opportunity to fight for my life.
- 51:37Speaker 2: And I ran half a second faster than I had
- 51:39Speaker 2: in the first one, which is huge on a sprint event.
- 51:43Speaker 2: So I come off of that field, and that was
- 51:45Speaker 2: one of the hardest things that I've done too, because
- 51:47Speaker 2: some of my best friends, like Annie, I know how
- 51:50Speaker 2: hard she trains, I know how good she is. Like
- 51:52Speaker 2: she was kind of she thought she hadn't made it through,
- 51:56Speaker 2: so she is crying, and then Brooke Wallace is balling
- 51:59Speaker 2: her eyes out because she kind of knew that she
- 52:01Speaker 2: hadn't made it through. And at the same time, I'm
- 52:03Speaker 2: not sure if I'd made it through or not. And
- 52:05Speaker 2: all I can do is all you can do is
- 52:08Speaker 2: give them a hug, and no one knows anything. And
- 52:10Speaker 2: then we just went back to our room and I
- 52:12Speaker 2: just sat and stared at the clock until they were
- 52:15Speaker 2: announcing who made it through. So that was one of
- 52:16Speaker 2: the hardest kind of like moments of the CrossFit games
- 52:20Speaker 2: and definitely not fun at all that it was very
- 52:24Speaker 2: just cutthroat, but that definitely showed me like every time
- 52:29Speaker 2: after that, like I made into the top ten and
- 52:32Speaker 2: like those girls didn't, and I know they belong there
- 52:35Speaker 2: and I know how much they want to be there.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Like it made me every time before I look at Vun,
- 52:39Speaker 2: I'd be like, we have an opportunity to fight, and
- 52:43Speaker 2: I was so thankful that I was entering the floor
- 52:45Speaker 2: again and entering the field again. So I didn't take
- 52:47Speaker 2: that for granted. It really made me appreciate that.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Obviously, the training is a huge component, but as you
- 52:53Speaker 1: were saying before, nutrition is a big component as well.
- 52:56Speaker 1: It has the end body issue. Also, let's highlight that
- 52:59Speaker 1: you were the first CrossFit female athlete to be showcased,
- 53:03Speaker 1: which is just phenomenal and thank you. But in the
- 53:07Speaker 1: interview it's funny because at the beginning they poke fun
- 53:10Speaker 1: they're like, catch and brings her own scale everywhere, yeah,
- 53:13Speaker 1: And then later in the article there they're like, she
- 53:15Speaker 1: doesn't weigh her food everywhere.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's a time and place for it, of course.
- 53:20Speaker 1: So obviously, like nutrition plays such a big part of
- 53:24Speaker 1: your overall health and well being, you mentioned greens being
- 53:28Speaker 1: super important. I feel the same way. A few years
- 53:30Speaker 1: ago I started supplementing with them just like as much
- 53:32Speaker 1: as well as in addition to eating as much greens
- 53:35Speaker 1: as possible, I now greens powder, and it's game changing
- 53:38Speaker 1: for me and just my energy levels and how I feel.
- 53:41Speaker 1: But aside from the greens, like what else are like
- 53:44Speaker 1: pillars in your nutrition that make sure to really get
- 53:48Speaker 1: into your regular tea.
- 53:50Speaker 2: I think the biggest one is just eating whole food.
- 53:53Speaker 2: So I don't think anything can come instead of foods.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Like I don't like supplementing with things. Some things we
- 53:59Speaker 2: need to supplement with. But I try to always have
- 54:01Speaker 2: the base as like foods, and I always say, like
- 54:04Speaker 2: eat the rainbow, you know, trying to eat a lot
- 54:06Speaker 2: of different kinds of fruits and vegetables, greens. I like
- 54:13Speaker 2: seafood way more than I do like chicken our meat,
- 54:17Speaker 2: so try and eat a lot of seafood. But I
- 54:19Speaker 2: eat like that. I am lone iron social beating more meat.
- 54:22Speaker 2: I'm just not a huge fan something that I'm trying
- 54:25Speaker 2: to get better at.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Personal lecture.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. So I do like a
- 54:34Speaker 2: scoop of I'm very picky with what I take, just
- 54:37Speaker 2: because like I am responsible for what goes unto my
- 54:40Speaker 2: body and trying to keep everything as clean as possible.
- 54:44Speaker 2: So like the Ascent protein, I'm actually like, but there's
- 54:46Speaker 2: five ingredients in it. I've been in their factory, I've
- 54:49Speaker 2: seen how they work it. I take like a scoop
- 54:51Speaker 2: of that. I try and keep my pre workout as
- 54:52Speaker 2: only caffeine. I try and like, I don't know. I
- 54:57Speaker 2: take creatine, just the pure one. I take d vinymin.
- 55:01Speaker 2: That's one thing that I have. I do blood tests
- 55:05Speaker 2: throughout the year just to see where I am. And
- 55:06Speaker 2: that's one thing that I just can't seem to get
- 55:08Speaker 2: out of my food or their son or whatever. I'm
- 55:10Speaker 2: always low. So that's something that I do supplement with.
- 55:13Speaker 2: I take Iceland always icelandic called of royal. That's something
- 55:18Speaker 2: that I've taken every single morning since I was a
- 55:21Speaker 2: little kid. And then yeah, lots of food, lots of vegetables.
- 55:25Speaker 2: The carbs that I like are rice and oats. I
- 55:28Speaker 2: love oatmeal. And then I think seafood is great for you.
- 55:32Speaker 2: And maybe it's just because I'm from Iceland and we
- 55:34Speaker 2: get like the freshest like out of the sea and everything,
- 55:37Speaker 2: but I like that and lots of water.
- 55:40Speaker 1: Both the time you mentioned oameal, you're just so passionate.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I love oame and they're best like
- 55:47Speaker 2: when I cook them like myself with my salt and
- 55:51Speaker 2: my whole milk. It's key.
- 55:54Speaker 1: You mentioned before that you geek out over sports psychology
- 55:58Speaker 1: and like reading and listening and absorbing, and I think
- 56:01Speaker 1: something that's really big, not just amongst athletes, but specifically
- 56:05Speaker 1: for you. And like staying positive is really identifying your values, right,
- 56:09Speaker 1: And so it's clear that family for you is like
- 56:12Speaker 1: a top priority. What else would you say your values?
- 56:17Speaker 1: What do you hold really dear to you?
- 56:20Speaker 2: It's definitely just the people around me. It's it's my family,
- 56:24Speaker 2: and it's my best friends, and it's my friends that
- 56:26Speaker 2: I've become family. It's kind of like the team around me.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Like I'm very aware that I myself cannot and never
- 56:35Speaker 2: have accomplished anything by myself, and nor would I want to.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Like when you think about like like if I think
- 56:42Speaker 2: about why do I want to win the games or
- 56:44Speaker 2: who do I want to do it for? If I
- 56:46Speaker 2: think about, like take the games, or take you know,
- 56:50Speaker 2: the job that you want or any the house that
- 56:52Speaker 2: you want to buy, or any kind of big accomplishment,
- 56:55Speaker 2: like imagine achieving that, but then take away everything else,
- 56:58Speaker 2: take away all the family, all the friends, and you're
- 57:00Speaker 2: staying there alone, Like do you still want that? It's
- 57:03Speaker 2: like I don't think anything is really worth it or anything.
- 57:07Speaker 2: You don't think you want to do things if it's
- 57:09Speaker 2: not with the people that you're doing it with, and
- 57:12Speaker 2: the journey to get there. So I think like it's
- 57:15Speaker 2: definitely the people that you have with you. I value
- 57:20Speaker 2: hard work a lot because I really truly believe that
- 57:23Speaker 2: you can achieve anything that you want in this world
- 57:25Speaker 2: if you're willing to do the work, and you can
- 57:28Speaker 2: do everything that you want but not everything at the
- 57:30Speaker 2: same time. So I think like, if you can show that,
- 57:32Speaker 2: if you can work hard and if you can fail
- 57:34Speaker 2: fast and try again and just try harder, it's hard
- 57:38Speaker 2: work and being thankful. I think being thankful for the
- 57:45Speaker 2: people that you have. It's being thankful for the opportunities
- 57:48Speaker 2: that you have. It's being thankful for where you are
- 57:51Speaker 2: at the moment and being aware that sometimes you're not
- 57:53Speaker 2: exactly where you want to be. But if you can
- 57:56Speaker 2: just trust that it's teaching you something or trust that
- 57:59Speaker 2: you're not getting it experience that will get used to
- 58:01Speaker 2: where you want to be.
- 58:02Speaker 1: You're offering up a lot of really great advice. When
- 58:05Speaker 1: you look at your time being an athlete, what would
- 58:08Speaker 1: you say has been one of the best pieces of
- 58:11Speaker 1: advice that you have been offered.
- 58:17Speaker 2: I don't think it's the best advice that I've gotten.
- 58:19Speaker 2: I think is the best thing that I've ever read
- 58:21Speaker 2: about and that I try livish is like be the
- 58:24Speaker 2: best version of myself. And that's something that I talk
- 58:26Speaker 2: a lot about and it's probably my most common answer.
- 58:29Speaker 2: It's so within my control to be the best version
- 58:33Speaker 2: of me, Like I don't have to do anything that
- 58:34Speaker 2: isn't me. I don't have to do anything special, but
- 58:36Speaker 2: it requires everything of me. And I really want to
- 58:39Speaker 2: be able to look back, whether it's my career or
- 58:43Speaker 2: my life and just be satisfied with what I did
- 58:47Speaker 2: and be satisfied knowing that I don't want to have
- 58:49Speaker 2: any regrets that I could have done something better. And
- 58:52Speaker 2: I think it's super easy to compare yourself to other people,
- 58:56Speaker 2: to compare myself to other girls, to be like, oh,
- 58:59Speaker 2: they're so much better in me at that, or like
- 59:02Speaker 2: I don't know, like I like theirselves so much better,
- 59:05Speaker 2: or they're prettier, they're better a crossbit, or whatever it is.
- 59:08Speaker 2: But we're all so different. We're also unique in our
- 59:12Speaker 2: own way. And I'm going to be the best Katryn
- 59:15Speaker 2: Davis Otter than Catcher and Davis Sara can be. I
- 59:18Speaker 2: think that's the best I can be. And that kind
- 59:19Speaker 2: of like that settles my mind and it takes me
- 59:22Speaker 2: off the comparison train, and I don't know. I think
- 59:26Speaker 2: I'm so much happier and I think I'm going to
- 59:28Speaker 2: achieve so much more and be better for other people
- 59:30Speaker 2: if I can focus on that.
- 59:32Speaker 1: I wind on the podcast the same way every single time,
- 59:35Speaker 1: by asking you have the chance right now to offer
- 59:38Speaker 1: the Catine that is, in twenty fourteen, going through some
- 59:43Speaker 1: hard times, that Hurtle moment a piece of advice looking
- 59:47Speaker 1: back on it right now, what would you tell her
- 59:50Speaker 1: during that tough time when she didn't make the Games.
- 59:53Speaker 2: I would tell her that failure is not a destination,
- 59:57Speaker 2: and I would say that sometimes it's the most important
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: thing that can happen to you, and just trust that
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: you are where you're supposed to be. Like if you'd
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: ask me now, do I wish that it hadn't happened, No, absolutely,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: I don't think i'd be who I am. I don't
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: think i'd be where I am. I don't think i'd
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: have the people around me that I have. I don't
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: think we'd won the Games in fifteen or sixteen. I
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: don't think i'd be the person I am or athlete
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: that I am if it wasn't because of that, and
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: I think I had to go through that, and I
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: think I had to learn, So I want her to
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: go through that. But I just want her to trust
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: that that she is not a failure. You know, she
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: failed at that particular event and now she can learn
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: and become better because of it.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: What are you excited about right now?
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh, A million things. I've had a lot
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: of exciting things going on this year, which I'm super
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: just like thankful and excited for. But honestly, right now,
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: in this moment, I'm excited to be back in Boston
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: in my rot I'm so excited to be back on
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: my diet, to slave to work with my coach, and
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: be back in training. That's what I'm excited about right now.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Just the little things. Man, thanks so much for hanging
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: out with me today.
