- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 20th of
- 0:17May and I've just had to re record this because here I was
- 0:20going on about how it's still Tuesday.
- 0:23Wednesday comes after Tuesday. Well done Sean, but it is indeed
- 0:26Wednesday. We have reached the middle of
- 0:27the week and we have reached this absolute banger of of a
- 0:32chapter in act, which is where the Holy Spirit comes on that
- 0:36first day of Pentecost, a day that many churches will be
- 0:40celebrating this Sunday, a day when the church began, when the
- 0:44Holy Spirit came and said, hey, this is my work, join me, let me
- 0:49empower you. And here we are 2000 odd years
- 0:52later, still doing this work. And one of the great benefits of
- 0:57reading through the Old Testament books like Joshua is
- 1:00when you come to that little list of places where people are
- 1:03from that used to seem so scary. Boy oh boy, it seems like a walk
- 1:07in the park now compared to some of those lists that we've had to
- 1:11go through in the Old Testament. So we will breeze through that
- 1:15as I say that. But I might be pausing and re
- 1:18recording and pausing and practising, we'll see.
- 1:21But from your perspective, it's just going to sound like it's
- 1:24flowing off the tip of my tongue.
- 1:25Ah, clever me. Not at all Clever technology
- 1:29that makes it all so smooth. All right, friends, let us hear
- 1:32about the church being born. Holy Spirit, as you come in this
- 1:36reading, Come to us now as we hear your word.
- 1:39Shape us, teach us, and let us know you better and better so
- 1:46you can point to Jesus. All right, friends, let's read
- 1:50together Acts chapter 2. On the day of Pentecost, all the
- 2:03believers were meeting together in one place.
- 2:06Suddenly there was a sound from heaven, like the roaring of a
- 2:10mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were
- 2:13sitting. Then what looked like flames or
- 2:16tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them, and
- 2:21everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began
- 2:24speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this
- 2:28ability. At that time, there were devout
- 2:31Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.
- 2:35When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running and they
- 2:38were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by
- 2:41the believers. They were completely amazed.
- 2:45How can this be? They exclaimed.
- 2:47These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them
- 2:50speaking in our own native languages.
- 2:53Here we are Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from
- 2:58Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontius, the province of Asia,
- 3:04Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt and the areas of Libya around
- 3:09Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism,
- 3:15Cretans and Arabs. And we all hear these people
- 3:19speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God
- 3:24has done. They stood there amazed and
- 3:27perplexed. What can this mean?
- 3:29They asked each other. But others in the crowd
- 3:32ridiculed them, saying they're just drunk, that's all.
- 3:36Then Peter stepped forward with the 11 other apostles and
- 3:40shouted to the crowd. Listen carefully, all of you,
- 3:44fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem.
- 3:47Make no mistake about this. These people are not drunk as
- 3:51some of you are assuming. 9:00 in the morning is much too early
- 3:55for that. No, what you see was predicted
- 3:59long ago by the prophet Joel. In the last days, God says, I
- 4:04will pour out my spirit upon all people.
- 4:07Your sons and daughters will prophecy, Your young men will
- 4:11see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
- 4:15In those days I will pour out my spirit even on my servants, men
- 4:19and women alike, and they will prophecy.
- 4:23And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the
- 4:27earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
- 4:31The sun will become dark and the moon will turn blood red before
- 4:35that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives.
- 4:39But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- 4:45People of Israel, listen. God publicly endorsed Jesus the
- 4:49Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs
- 4:53through him, as you well know. But God knew that would happen,
- 4:58and his prearranged plan was carried out.
- 5:01When Jesus was betrayed with the help of lawless Gentiles, you
- 5:05nailed him to a cross and killed him.
- 5:08But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him
- 5:12back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
- 5:17King David said this about him. I see that the Lord is always
- 5:21with me. I will not be shaken, for He is
- 5:24right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad and
- 5:28my tongue shouts his praises. My body rests in hope, for you
- 5:33will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy 1 to rot
- 5:37in the grave. You have shown me the way of
- 5:40life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.
- 5:44Dear brothers, think about this. You can be sure that the
- 5:48Patriarch David wasn't referring to himself, for he died and was
- 5:52buried, and his tomb is still here among us.
- 5:55But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an
- 5:59oath that one of David's own descendants would sit on his
- 6:03throne. David was looking into the
- 6:06future and Speaking of the Messiah's resurrection.
- 6:09He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or
- 6:13allow his body to rot in the grave.
- 6:15God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all the witnesses of
- 6:20this now. He is exalted to the place of
- 6:24highest honour in heaven at God's right hand.
- 6:28And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy
- 6:32Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear to day.
- 6:38For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, the
- 6:43Lord said to my Lord, sit in the place of honour at my right
- 6:47hand, until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool
- 6:51under your feet. So let everyone in Israel know
- 6:55for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified
- 7:00to be both Lord and Messiah. Peter's words pierced their
- 7:06hearts and they said to him and to the other apostles, Brothers,
- 7:10what should we do? Peter replied.
- 7:14Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God and be
- 7:18baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
- 7:21your sins. Then you will receive the gift
- 7:24of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, your
- 7:28children, and to those far away, all who have been called by the
- 7:33Lord our God. Then Peter continued preaching
- 7:36for a long time, strongly urging all the listeners, Save
- 7:40yourselves from this crooked generation.
- 7:43Those who believed what Peter said were baptised and added to
- 7:47the church that day, about 3000 in all, all the believers
- 7:52devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to
- 7:55fellowship, and to sharing in meals, including the Lord's
- 7:59Supper, and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over
- 8:03them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs
- 8:07and wonders. And all the believers met
- 8:10together in one place and shared everything they had.
- 8:14They sold their property and possessions and shared the money
- 8:17with those in need. They worshipped together at the
- 8:20temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and
- 8:24shared their meals with great joy and generosity, all the
- 8:28while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.
- 8:33And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were
- 8:37being saved. Oh Lord, this is such a good
- 8:49reminder that your church is your church.
- 8:53It's not our church. We are members of your church,
- 8:56and you invite us to be part of your mission of sharing your
- 8:59good news. But this is your work, and your
- 9:02spirit is alive and active, moving in your people to convict
- 9:08them of your love for them. So Lord, I pray that with
- 9:13humility we might put ourselves aside and focus on being
- 9:18conduits of You and Your presence, Your Spirit and Your
- 9:22work. It's not us, it's all You.
- 9:26And we give you all the praise. And we thank you that you do
- 9:31come and that you bring Your Spirit and that You are present
- 9:35here with us each day as we go about day to day living our
- 9:39lives. We are just so blown away by
- 9:43Your love and Your presence and we thank You for it.
- 9:47And we pray this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
