- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, how are you doing
- 0:22today on this? Fine, we're recording this on
- 0:25Thursday, January 29th. Great.
- 0:29It's warmed up here in Maine. It's 20°, which yeah, it's it's
- 0:34kind of nice out. Let.
- 0:35Me see what it is outside for us it is currently.
- 0:39I went to it 60° sixty. It's a little I'm actually cool
- 0:44out there. It's also, and this is weird,
- 0:46but it's actually 3 hours later here than where you are.
- 0:49I didn't know this until just recently, but yeah.
- 0:53It it is three hours earlier. It's three hours earlier.
- 0:57What are you talking about? Later.
- 0:58Oh, later at night. Three hours.
- 0:59No, where I am, it's three hours later because it's. 16 it's
- 1:05earlier. It's earlier, which makes it
- 1:08later in time. Oh man, you just blew my mind.
- 1:13You, you had January 29th half start before me, so you're
- 1:20technically earlier than me. But because you're earlier than
- 1:24me, you have made it later in the day right now than it is in
- 1:29the day for me. Man, this is this is some
- 1:34highbrow conversation here. It is incredible and what we
- 1:38were just talking about a second ago, it was about your stream
- 1:42yard glitching. My goodness.
- 1:44Yeah, so I'm on video calls all day for work.
- 1:48It was 0 problems whatsoever except in stream yard.
- 1:53It doesn't matter where in the house I am, it's stream yard
- 1:56will just go fuzzy. It'll go out on me for like 6 or
- 2:017 seconds randomly every, I don't know, half hour of a of a
- 2:05video. So I expect it to happen.
- 2:07It just happened to us before we started here and you said.
- 2:12I said well you need to hard wire it and you said I can't and
- 2:16I said you can. So our modem is upstairs on the
- 2:22other side of the house, so it would need to, we'd have to have
- 2:27an Ethernet cable and I know they'd make them because my kids
- 2:30have my kids are both hard wired and that it would go through the
- 2:35basement, up the stairs, and then all the way over into the
- 2:41far corner. I'm going to show you something.
- 2:45Oh, hardwired. I'm hardwired right now into two
- 2:52rooms away. But Greg, the problem isn't me.
- 2:55It's Stream Yard. I keep telling my I keep trying
- 3:00to tell my wife the same thing. The problem isn't me, honey.
- 3:03The problem isn't me. All right, well, enough of this
- 3:08nonsense. We have a couple things to talk
- 3:13about. You have a topic.
- 3:15I have a better topic. We, we can ask.
- 3:21We can ask everybody out there down below who had a better
- 3:25topic. But we should, you know, we
- 3:28should also talk about the AI version of us that Brendan Ryan.
- 3:33On Brutal, brutal. Brendan Ryan on Instagram
- 3:39creates these hobby lores and tales, I think is what it's
- 3:43called, AI art, like comic book covers, and they're very cool.
- 3:50And today he had one that was of us.
- 3:54And let me, let me do it with me.
- 3:57Yeah. And so yours, though that was
- 4:03pretty rough. I'm not a thin guy anymore.
- 4:07It's funny because I was like, I was like, I was a petite kid and
- 4:13I'm not going to get into everything, but I'm not as
- 4:17petite anymore. But that thing, it was, it was
- 4:21AI mean. I don't know.
- 4:23I mean, I'm here to tell you, Greg, that that is not a
- 4:26flattering image of you. You do not look like that.
- 4:29Do you know, did did you ever hear of the website
- 4:32hotornot.com? Yes.
- 4:36And what hotornot.com was is you could upload a picture of
- 4:39yourself and then and then what would happen is people could
- 4:44vote hot or not. And then what would happen is
- 4:48after hundreds and thousands and thousands of votes, you would,
- 4:52you know, you'd have a score of what percentage said you were
- 4:56hot. And it was sort of like this
- 4:58idea of you could find out like, 'cause you know, you like, you
- 5:03know, your, your mom is like, well, you're so cute, honey,
- 5:06you're such a sweet, you're handsome.
- 5:08You know, grandma says that. But it was like, we can actually
- 5:11find out, you know, and, and so AII think is is really kind of
- 5:20tipping their hand to me on, on whether or not I'm fat.
- 5:26I thought mine was really good, but I looked at yours and I was
- 5:30like, oh, that doesn't look like Greg.
- 5:32Yeah, it's a little harsh, but it's OK.
- 5:36It's OK. All right, well, why don't you
- 5:40go first and then we'll we'll pick up steam with mine after
- 5:44yours. Wow, so you did a great video
- 5:50this week where you did the what was the most.
- 5:54Important. The most?
- 5:55Yes, the most important card in the history of the hobby.
- 6:00What is the most important card? Not the most beautiful, not your
- 6:05favorite, not the most iconic, but the most important.
- 6:09Yeah, really good. And you know your your viewers
- 6:12had as you talked about the top four or five were mentioned a
- 6:15lot, but then a lot of really good ones after that.
- 6:19And that got me thinking. And I think there's a lot of
- 6:21overlap, but what are the top? What is the most important sets
- 6:26of all time? And there was one that I don't
- 6:29think was mentioned on there, which would be, I would say, and
- 6:33it's not #1 but one that didn't get mentioned, as far as I know
- 6:36was the 1993 tops finest set. Yeah, that I, I mean so OK, so
- 6:44I've we've mentioned several times iconic Al and high pop
- 6:48professor Brian and the brothers duo show.
- 6:51I'm a a big fan of both those guys.
- 6:54And if you ask those guys, they would say that the 1993 tops
- 6:59finest refractor series that's set is, is the 52 tops of modern
- 7:06is, is what they would say. And, and I can't disagree.
- 7:10I mean, it is it, it changed things.
- 7:13It, it, it was like a, it was like this much same with 89.
- 7:17I mean, it's OK, we'll, we'll get right into it. 89 upper deck
- 7:20is on the list. It is 90.
- 7:23The 93 finest, though there isn't really an iconic card in
- 7:27the set. You could say Griffey, sure,
- 7:29Griffey Refractor, but I don't think so.
- 7:31I don't think there's really a it's it's the entire set.
- 7:36The first chromium set of course upper deck started with the
- 7:41premium cards in 1989 and I'm I'm throwing up air quotes here
- 7:46for premium, but the 93 tops finest was game changing for the
- 7:53for the industry. Without question.
- 7:56And, and it was sort of like one of the cards that was the most
- 7:59important that was mentioned was that Reggie Jackson auto card,
- 8:04because it was the first time an auto card was inserted into a
- 8:07pack And that is a game changer. And that was revolutionary like
- 8:11the refractors in the 93 finest. But, but if we're talking
- 8:16vintage, because most of the people that are listening to us
- 8:18aren't, aren't collecting 93 finest, but, but it's definitely
- 8:22on the I mean 89 upper deck, 93 finest refractors, 93 finest
- 8:27that those two are definitely in the conversation without
- 8:31question. But we can kick around a few
- 8:34others and, and I have some opinions on this.
- 8:37I have some fairly strong opinions.
- 8:38Obviously 52 tops is in there 4849 leaf.
- 8:43You know, is is definitely in there 52 tops because it was the
- 8:47first top set. It's one of the most beautiful
- 8:49top sets. It's there's a reason that Topps
- 8:53basically buried Bowman after that because it was such a great
- 8:58set. The leaf set is one of the it's
- 9:01the first wide release set that had black players on it and it's
- 9:06a beautiful set and it's a set that has some important rookie
- 9:11cards. T2O633, Gowdy, all of those are
- 9:15in the conversation. So those are easy ones.
- 9:18So I want to not go with the low hanging fruit.
- 9:21I want to point out a couple of sets that I think are really
- 9:27important for some other reasons.
- 9:29So I I want to I want to go next level.
- 9:32I don't want to go with the easy ones.
- 9:34OK, let's do it. So I'm I'm going to say 57 tops.
- 9:39OK, and this is this is exactly what I was thinking too.
- 9:42Why 57 tops? Let's see if we have the same
- 9:44reason. There's several reasons.
- 9:46First, it's, it's pictures instead of portraits for like
- 9:53pretty much the first time. So that makes it really
- 9:56important that tops went to pictures in 57 tops #2 I mean,
- 10:02I'm, I'm even going to mention what I'm mentioning by not
- 10:05mentioning, but the all the, all the Hall of Fame rookie cards.
- 10:09That's that's part of it. But the the second top set, the
- 10:14first time that tops started doing multiplayer cards, there
- 10:20was the 54 O'Brien set had the O'Brien brothers.
- 10:24But other than that, it's the first time that tops started
- 10:27mainstreaming multiplayers into onto a card, which to me they
- 10:34just went with after that. And then last but not least is
- 10:39the first set that standardized the size.
- 10:44That's right. I mean, it's got, I mean that's
- 10:45a lot of check marks right there.
- 10:47Yeah, for me, the most important one is the standardized size and
- 10:53why it it. It really tips over the edge of
- 10:57most important. Why?
- 11:00Why? Why does that matter?
- 11:02Because every card other than 89 Bowman, every card since then
- 11:07has been that size. You have to obviously exclude
- 11:10the T2O6, not remakes, but whatever the tops.
- 11:15Yeah, every card since then has been that size.
- 11:20And that is important that it was kind of this became a
- 11:24universal card size in 1957. Do you remember the Tops bigs
- 11:30cards? The tops Big.
- 11:32Yeah, I have some. Yeah, those cards and I mean,
- 11:36I'm just the reason I'm bringing this up is because I actually
- 11:38have a fun story about the tops big set.
- 11:40So, so Tops big are what was that like 8889, something like
- 11:47that. I could Google it real.
- 11:49Quick, yeah, I think 80. Yeah, I would say 88 or 89 too.
- 11:5888 so 88 tops big. OK, now these are were they,
- 12:03they kind of look like the 55 and 56 tops cards, but and, and
- 12:07they were this, they were a little oversized like the 5556
- 12:11tops cards. So we went into the local card
- 12:14shop. I was probably 8, no more than
- 12:19that. I was 9 or 10 and my brother
- 12:21bought 2 packs of Topps big carts.
- 12:24OK. And if the card shop was called
- 12:26cards and cards. So he goes into cards and cards,
- 12:30he buys 2 packs and he opens up and he gets he gets some good
- 12:33players. I'll make the players out.
- 12:35Conseco and McGuire and and then some other stuff.
- 12:40MM Greenwell sure. And so he, he has these three
- 12:46cards and, and he says, you know, would you to the shop,
- 12:51would you buy these off of me And can I sell them?
- 12:55Because I don't, I don't want these cards.
- 12:57I don't, I don't like the A's. We'll say it was.
- 12:59But he, he basically says, can I sell some of these cards back?
- 13:03And they go, well, I'll tell you what we'll do for those 3 cards.
- 13:07We'll give you 2 more packs instead of buying them, we'll
- 13:10trade you for 2 packs. And he goes, OK, so then he
- 13:14opens those two packs and he pulls out three or four cards
- 13:16and goes, what about these? And they go, we'll trade you
- 13:18those for two more packs. And my brother goes, OK, and
- 13:21then he gets two more packs and he pulls out a couple of cards
- 13:23and he gets two more packs before we're done.
- 13:26I swear to you, my brother opened almost the whole box and
- 13:31my brother had about 2/3 of the cards and the shop had 1/3 of
- 13:37the cards. And all that my brother
- 13:39originally did was buy 2 packs and he just kept trading the
- 13:45cards, some of the cards, some of the cards for more packs.
- 13:49And my brother bought 2 packs, ended up opening almost the
- 13:54whole box, getting to keep about 2/3 of the cards.
- 13:57And I remember we were walking from the door of the shop.
- 14:01I wonder if my dad remembers this story.
- 14:04We're walking from the car to from the door of the card shop
- 14:07to the car. We get in the car and my
- 14:10brother's like that was unbelievable.
- 14:12And my dad goes, they're not going to stay in business for
- 14:16very long. And like 6 months later, the
- 14:21place was closed down. So there's my tops big story
- 14:25that I don't, I mean, weird. I I was trying to find, I was
- 14:30trying to find how you weren't right by saying that cards were
- 14:33standardized. I was, I was trying to find how
- 14:35is there some other set? But anyways, yes, so 57 top
- 14:40we're back to 57 tops. What do you think about multi me
- 14:44mentioning the multiplayers in that set as a reason why it was
- 14:48groundbreaking too? Is that groundbreaking?
- 14:53Yeah, sure, it's important. I just don't think it's as
- 14:57important as standardizing the What about the first action
- 15:02cards in action? It it is the first, well, what
- 15:07year, what year would you say are the 1st in action cards?
- 15:101971. OK, yeah, I, I, I see why you'd
- 15:15say that. And then, you know, Mike would
- 15:20say your your boy Mike baseball collector would say no.
- 15:24The 53 Bowman has the first action shot the Pee Wee Reese.
- 15:30Oh, Mike froze. Oh, he's back.
- 15:32He's back. It was perfect timing.
- 15:35You talked. I didn't hear a word.
- 15:36I tell you what I said. You didn't.
- 15:38Hear a word of it, but I'm guessing.
- 15:40I'm guessing you pointed out the fake in action shot of of Pee
- 15:44Wee Reese in 1953. Fake or staged?
- 15:48Staged. Staged.
- 15:49Yeah, yeah, Yeah, I did. And no, you're right, 71 top and
- 15:53and some of those are beautiful action shots.
- 15:56The Nolan Ryan, the Bob Gibson, the the Thurman Munson, there
- 16:01are some beautiful in action shots in the 71.
- 16:05The 71 top set, the 71 top sets definitely got it's got to be on
- 16:08the list. It's got to be on the list of of
- 16:11the most important for sure. OK, so we got 71 tops.
- 16:16We got 57 tops. We have 33 Gaudi T2 O 652 tops.
- 16:24We have 89 upper deck. We have 93 finest.
- 16:28Is there anything? We're two O 6 right 33.
- 16:31Yeah, so is there and then we and then 4849 Leaf.
- 16:35So, so somebody out there is listening and they're trying to
- 16:38find a rotten tomato to throw at the the screen right now.
- 16:45What are they thinking? What are the, what is the next
- 16:48one that we haven't mentioned that everybody is screaming
- 16:52right now about? There's got to be 1, right?
- 16:59I'm thinking, I'm thinking, I don't know, like a the first
- 17:04prism set something stupid. One year and I can't remember
- 17:09what it is. I I could Google it I guess and
- 17:11cheat and act like I knew it but I can't remember.
- 17:14I think it was in the early 70's the first set that didn't have
- 17:18series because remember cards were released in series forever
- 17:23and then 70. 3. That's my that's what I was
- 17:27going to say. First set, first baseball cards,
- 17:33not in series. Somebody out there is going how?
- 17:35I can't believe they didn't know that.
- 17:37Yeah. Yeah, well, I know.
- 17:40Yeah, it gave me 8. Google.
- 17:44Google is not helping me right now.
- 17:48I I probably didn't put in a good enough thing.
- 17:50I don't remember somebody out there tell us in the comments
- 17:52down below because I can't remember off the top of my head.
- 17:55I did an episode one time talking about it not released in
- 18:03series. I guess I could say this is.
- 18:07Gripping. It's really good airwave stuff
- 18:12that we're doing right now. I don't know.
- 18:13I give up, I pull the RIP cord, they win, I lose, whatever.
- 18:18That would be kind of interesting.
- 18:21Is it even interesting? I don't, I don't really even
- 18:23know. OK, so I mean, is there anything
- 18:29else to talk about with this? Is there any other?
- 18:32I mean, I love the 54 top set and then I know a lot of people
- 18:35love the 55 and 56 top set, but that's the most.
- 18:38Important 1887, Old Judge. OK, so we could start getting in
- 18:46the 1800s for sure now. We didn't.
- 18:51We also didn't you didn't specify baseball or sports
- 18:57cards. So we could go down the rabbit
- 18:59hole of 61 fleers really important for basketball, 86
- 19:04fleers really important for basketball.
- 19:06We could do that. Yeah. 57 tops for basketball.
- 19:11I mean, if you go into football, I mean, we could, we could go,
- 19:17you know, but it but is but is it even interesting?
- 19:20Is that interesting or are we? Well, you said you had a better
- 19:23topic, so. Well, I do, so no, not really.
- 19:27Actually, that ended up being kind.
- 19:29Of I think. I think you tanked that topic on
- 19:31purpose. Did I tanked it?
- 19:33I thought, I thought. I thought it was OK.
- 19:35I thought it actually turned out better than I was expecting.
- 19:39OK, a lot of people talk about why cards, the card values don't
- 19:46matter. And you, you we've talked a
- 19:48little bit about why we disagree with that.
- 19:51And card values do matter to us and they do matter to a lot of
- 19:54people. And but then there are some
- 19:57people that are just adamantly say card values don't matter.
- 20:00Well, until they sell cards. They they say that they don't
- 20:03matter and then they go and they sell their cards and if they
- 20:06don't matter then just give them away.
- 20:08There are quite a few people who have said to me that card values
- 20:14don't matter, and then they've sold cards, right?
- 20:17For sure. But here's my thing.
- 20:20I think what they're saying, I think what they're saying
- 20:22though, Greg, is similar to what we say, which is I don't give a
- 20:26lot of thought to card value. I buy a card.
- 20:30Once I've bought that card, I'm not, I don't care about the
- 20:33value of it. I want it to go up.
- 20:37There's no doubt that I want my cards to go up in value.
- 20:41But I could own a card for five years and not once think about
- 20:44what it's worth. And then all of a sudden I look
- 20:46it up and it's worth five times what I paid for it.
- 20:49And it's like, oh wow, that's amazing.
- 20:51But I think that's what people are saying when they say they
- 20:55don't care about values. Yeah, I, I think that's what
- 20:59they're saying too. I agree with you.
- 21:01I think that's what they're saying is I buy them not because
- 21:04I care what they're worth or what they will be worth.
- 21:07I buy them 'cause I like them and I'm planning on keeping them
- 21:10and then maybe they don't. But something happened this
- 21:13week. A couple of things have actually
- 21:15happened. My month of January of buying
- 21:18has been and we're we're at the end of January here and the
- 21:22month of January, my buying has been unlike any month since I
- 21:26started my channel. It's been a very weird month of
- 21:29buying cards and, and it's made me a little bit uncomfortable
- 21:35And, and I'm going to tell you why.
- 21:36And it ties into do the card values matter?
- 21:39And, and so I haven't really even shared my topic yet.
- 21:42My my topic is card values do matter and and it's that's not
- 21:48the topic. I don't even know what the topic
- 21:49is. So I can't win here.
- 21:51But here's what has happened. Here's what has happened, Mike,
- 21:55and why it has made me kind of spin a little bit this month.
- 21:59OK, so I got a a text message from my buddy Rob Cash cards.
- 22:07Great guy and I don't think you've met Rob, but you'll meet
- 22:10him at the Strongsville or whatever they call it show he's
- 22:13a great guy. He was on my channel with Darren
- 22:15on off topic this month. He texts me and he says look
- 22:18what I found and it's a picture of my former student Matt
- 22:23Manning's tops Chrome super factor Otto.
- 22:29This would be Matt's number one tops card.
- 22:33Now you can make the argument that his first Bowman Otto, one
- 22:38of one super fractor, would be better.
- 22:40So this is either Matt's number one best card or #2 best card in
- 22:44the world. And it is.
- 22:48It is his best tops card without question.
- 22:51It's his best tops card. And I'm like, what's the guy
- 22:54want? I like I said, I need it.
- 22:56And he goes, he wants 400 bucks and I'm like 400 bucks.
- 23:02He knows you're out there. And I'm like, but, but I do know
- 23:08that there's also this thing where some people just collect
- 23:13one of one super factor and base cards and one of one super
- 23:17factor auto rookies. It's like a thing.
- 23:21So there is some demand and if it, it's a guy that nobody's
- 23:26ever heard of or will ever heard about.
- 23:28And Matt has had a decent career.
- 23:30He just signed, he's going to play this year in Korea.
- 23:33Hopefully he'll come back. But he was in the majors for
- 23:36like 4 straight years and he had a lot of good starts.
- 23:39He was, he was part of a no hitter.
- 23:42He started a game that they had a no hitter.
- 23:44And he he's not a total common, but he's a common for most
- 23:49people. But anyway, so I'm like, man, I,
- 23:53I just don't think I can do it. And, and so Rob, yeah, Rob
- 23:58started talking to the guy and he's like, come on, like come
- 24:00down a little bit. And he goes, 350 is my absolute
- 24:03bottom, 350 is less than I paid, blah, blah, blah.
- 24:07It's not what? And, and he said it's not yet.
- 24:10And I and he said, what do you want to do?
- 24:12And I go, I just don't think I can do it now.
- 24:14I want the card like I want the card.
- 24:18I don't think I can do it, man. So a couple days later, Rob
- 24:22texted me. He goes, come on man, you got to
- 24:24you got to do something. And I go, I don't know.
- 24:27And he goes, let me see if I can get him down more.
- 24:29So he texts him and he messages him through Facebook because he
- 24:32found the guy on Facebook or something.
- 24:34And he said I 300 that's it, 300 shipped.
- 24:42And I go, all right, fine, I'm going to do it.
- 24:46OK, $300.00 for this card. Now I don't regret it, but I'm
- 24:50struggling with spending $300 on this card and, and I've been
- 24:56trying to figure out why am I struggling with spending $300 on
- 25:01the card. And I think that it's this.
- 25:04When you, when you buy a card normally you can usually get 80
- 25:12to 90% of your money back if you decide you made a mistake.
- 25:18And I don't think that's the case with this card normally.
- 25:26I think values matter some because you, if you buy the card
- 25:33and the value is, you know, if you buy a card that the value
- 25:41is, it's a good value, you bought it at a good price.
- 25:44The you, you got a good deal, the card isn't going to plummet.
- 25:50Then you can get your money back because you've bought an asset,
- 25:55right? You bought an asset in the card.
- 25:57And so I've always felt more comfortable if I buy a Jackie
- 26:00Robinson card today, I could probably get at least 80 to 90%
- 26:05of my money back tomorrow if I decide I made a mistake.
- 26:10But that card, that Matt Manning card, I don't think I can get 80
- 26:16to 90% of my money back because the whole market for that card
- 26:21just bought it. Now where?
- 26:24Where would be the best place to sell cards if you were going to
- 26:26sell cards? If I were going to sell cards,
- 26:29it would be with Chris Sewell. Chris Sewell, baseball card
- 26:33collector, investor, dealer, in that order, is trustworthy.
- 26:38He's a great guy. He's our friend and he is trying
- 26:44to buy collections out there for fair prices and we definitely
- 26:49endorse him. We definitely trust him and we
- 26:54think you should consider selling your cards to Chris
- 26:57Sewell. If you would like to get in
- 26:59touch with Chris Sewell, if you go over to Sports Car Clubhouse
- 27:03and you go to Partners, the Partners link, there will be
- 27:06more information about Chris. I don't remember Chris's e-mail
- 27:11address. I should know it by now.
- 27:12What is it? Sewell Sports?
- 27:14I'm not going to screw it up. You tell me, Mike.
- 27:16Sewellsportscards@gmail.com. He, he really is a great guy and
- 27:21I, I, there have been very few things that Chris has ever been
- 27:26associated with that I didn't genuinely truly enjoy.
- 27:30That's the truth. That's the truth.
- 27:32But yes, but now. They have a competing podcast
- 27:35and I'm not sure we can be friends with them anymore.
- 27:37Competing. Come on.
- 27:40I mean, those guys aren't. Those guys aren't competing with
- 27:43us. OK, sure.
- 27:45Actually, it's a lot of fun and I, I have been enjoying
- 27:48listening to it. Yeah.
- 27:50So what do you think about that? Sometimes when you buy a card
- 27:56and the value isn't really there, then I struggle more with
- 28:04making the purchase because I've always felt like I'm bailed out
- 28:09by, well, I can always sell it, but this card, I don't think I
- 28:13can really do that. Fun fact, Matt Manning's
- 28:16birthday was yesterday really. And I think that seller got
- 28:24lucky to find you. And that's that's the only way
- 28:29you're going to sell that card for $300 or close to it is
- 28:33finding the right buyer. Unlike a Jackie Robinson where
- 28:38it's liquid, you could put it out there and somebody's going
- 28:41to buy it. A Matt Manning, rookie Refractor
- 28:45auto, Super Refractor auto has a extremely limited audience at
- 28:51$300, now $50. You could find a buyer pretty
- 28:55quickly I think. Oh I think I would sell it today
- 28:58at 50 bucks. Right.
- 29:00But for $300, yeah, I think you're going to have a pretty
- 29:04difficult time finding a buyer. And that's that's my point.
- 29:09But why? Why do you care?
- 29:11It's a cool card of somebody you had as a student.
- 29:14I you can show it to him, you can gift it to him.
- 29:17You can. It's a cool story and I think
- 29:20there's a lot of value in that. 100% agree.
- 29:25And the card is not for sale and I'm not planning on ever selling
- 29:31the card. I don't I can't.
- 29:33I mean, I mean, he'd have to turn into Tarek Scubal for me to
- 29:37sell the card. You know, if it was, if it got
- 29:40to the point where he turned resurrected his career and just
- 29:44went on a tear and I, it was worth so much money that I, I
- 29:48had to sell it, then I would sell it.
- 29:49But otherwise I'm not planning on selling this card.
- 29:52But, and, and, and that's kind of the point.
- 29:55And, and again, I don't really know what my question is more
- 29:58than topic, which is the discussion of why, if I know I'm
- 30:04not going to sell this card, but the fact that I couldn't sell
- 30:10the card has made it harder for me to buy the card.
- 30:15I've I am a very safe person with money I don't make.
- 30:20I don't take a lot of risk. Whenever I buy any card, I don't
- 30:25really worry about spending money on the card because I feel
- 30:31like I have this built in safety net.
- 30:33But this is a different thing. Again, I'm not going to sell it,
- 30:38but the fact that normally I can sell it makes me feel a lot more
- 30:45at ease about buying a card. Am I the only person that feels
- 30:49that way? That sometimes when I buy a
- 30:52card, knowing that I could sell it if something happened makes
- 30:59it a little bit easier for me to fork over the money?
- 31:02Is that a unusual thing? Is that a normal thing?
- 31:06Do you ever feel that way? Have you bought a card where you
- 31:09said, you know what, I'm buying this card, and if I ever tried
- 31:13to, if I ever needed to sell it, it ain't happening?
- 31:17Or do you feel more comfortable when you buy cards, like when
- 31:22you bought your Roberto Clemente rookie at the National?
- 31:25You more comfortable, of course. I can't think of a time when I
- 31:29bought a card, but I've never been in that type of situation
- 31:35where I've never bought a one of one.
- 31:37I've never bought a really rare card that I was the sole
- 31:41audience for, so I can't say no. My cousin has a card that's out
- 31:47there from when he played very briefly on a minor league team.
- 31:51And there are three of them that I found all for Sale by the same
- 31:56eBay dealer. So I think that they're fake.
- 31:59They're not. I don't think they're, I think
- 32:02they're just custom. And he has them listed at I
- 32:05think $15 each. And I want all three of them,
- 32:09but my cousin is making an error in the photo, like he's
- 32:15committing an error. And so it's kind of like, do I
- 32:18want to pay $15.00 for these? I sent it to him.
- 32:21He wasn't even aware of them. And he's like, those are
- 32:23definitely not worth $15. Don't buy that.
- 32:28But you know, I, I can't think of that would be the most I
- 32:32would ever spend. That would be the one example is
- 32:35if I were to buy my cousin's card.
- 32:37Nobody would ever buy that for $15 except for me.
- 32:40Do other people out there, when they buy cards that are very
- 32:47niche, do they, do you think that they feel less comfortable
- 32:54forking over the money for the card?
- 32:56Or do other people, am I unusual for why I feel a little bit
- 33:03apprehensive about this purchase or is that something that other
- 33:06people go through? Or do other people just when
- 33:09they buy stuff, they're happy with the addition, they don't
- 33:13second guess it and they just go no, no, no, no, I want this, so
- 33:17who cares what it's worth? I don't care if I ever could
- 33:20sell it or not. Am I unusual for feeling the way
- 33:24that I'm feeling about being uncomfortable buying a card that
- 33:28I couldn't sell if I needed to sell it?
- 33:31I don't think you're unusual. I think that if you think about,
- 33:35let's say, if you were, let's say you were collecting a a rare
- 33:39pirate set, correct? Would you?
- 33:42Would you? Would you feel uncomfortable
- 33:45about buying APSA 5 or an SGC 5 of one of those, knowing that
- 33:50the audience of that set is like you and three other people?
- 33:54That's a great question. Apparently I do this a lot.
- 33:57What is wrong with me? And the audience for For the
- 34:03Goonies autographs, by the way, are like you and me and three
- 34:07other people. Yeah, one of them is a Boston
- 34:11card hunter, apparently. Yeah, he's the one in your in
- 34:15your discussion with him, he was saying how he was putting that
- 34:19that run together too, and he bought like a, a box of the
- 34:23sealed wax. Yeah, I, I, I guess I kind of, I
- 34:28mean, all right, I'm going to share another thing I've been
- 34:30buying. I wasn't going to share this,
- 34:32but I pulled them just in case. So I'm on this stupid kick
- 34:37again. All month I've been buying stuff
- 34:40that has a very niche market. So in what was it, 2018 tops
- 34:50archives, they had an insert set and the insert set are The
- 34:55Sandlot players. And in the insert set of that,
- 35:00they also had autos of the actors who played The Sandlot
- 35:05players. And I just, I've been on a tear
- 35:09with them. I mean, I got I got the smalls
- 35:12right here. This one is graded.
- 35:14Why? I don't know why these were just
- 35:18collecting dust on eBay and then I just went and bought a bunch.
- 35:23Of what? What did you pay for that one?
- 35:24I don't even want to say, 'cause people will make fun of me.
- 35:28I got, I got squints here, autoed.
- 35:32I've got. I've got.
- 35:35I got to watch that movie again, it's been so long.
- 35:36We've got Tommy Timmons and I've got Timmy Timmons all.
- 35:42Of the greatest, One of the greatest baseball movies of all
- 35:44time and one of the greatest coming of age movies of all
- 35:47time. Yeah.
- 35:48These are these are two of the best baseball brothers of all
- 35:53time. Right there I've got and then
- 35:56today in the mail, I got Kenny Denunez.
- 36:00Wow. So I've got speaking.
- 36:03So best of them. Best baseball brothers?
- 36:05Not like Jose and Ozzy can say. Go.
- 36:08I'm just kidding, you know, Do you know what?
- 36:10Baseball Brothers have the most combined home runs in the
- 36:16history of baseball. It's going to be something
- 36:18stupid like Jose and Ozzy, where one of them have 450 and the
- 36:22other has three. Let me think here, who has a lot
- 36:27of home runs? Hank Aaron and his brother.
- 36:31That's that's correct. Tommy Aaron.
- 36:33Is that right? Yeah, that's, that's, that is
- 36:36it's Tommy Aaron. Tommy has 13.
- 36:42Really contributing to that number.
- 36:43And Hank has 755. That was good deduction that you
- 36:48did there. Greg Nettles, by the way, his
- 36:51brother played a little bit of professional baseball.
- 36:55So I've been buying stuff all month that like not a lot of
- 37:01people want. Which by the way, I have to, I
- 37:02have to say this. So the movie was set in 1962,
- 37:07which is why it's the 1962 tops design.
- 37:12Clever. I've been buying stuff all month
- 37:16that nobody wants and except for me.
- 37:20See, that's when you wait for an auction to come up.
- 37:23I know I should, but I also have, you know, the patience of,
- 37:30I don't know, a four year old. Oh man, I have so much patience.
- 37:35Really. Yeah, I have so many eBay saved
- 37:39searches that are only come up if there's an auction.
- 37:43So I've got it saved as this at auction and I just wait and I
- 37:49wait and I wait and I wait. The cards are listed $150.00
- 37:53when it comes up at auction. I get it for 50.
- 37:56I mean, it's smart. It's smart.
- 37:58That's not, that's not what I've done.
- 38:00I, I don't know. I'm I'm insane.
- 38:04It's it's official. I've I've in my month of January
- 38:08is absolutely insane and everything is modern.
- 38:11Everything that I bought in January is 2018 or newer.
- 38:15Wow. I bought 6 cards, these five
- 38:20Sandlot cards by the way, one of the guys won't sign anymore.
- 38:26He won't. He does not want to be
- 38:28associated with it at all. And so of the nine players, you
- 38:33can only buy 8 of them. Yeah.
- 38:39So 2018 tops archives cards and the the Matt Manning super
- 38:47factor from 2020, I think. No, no, no, 2020.
- 38:52I don't 2022, I don't even remember.
- 38:55So look at me. I'm a modern collector.
- 38:57I'm a modern auto collector. That's great to me.
- 39:04Well, you asked me. You asked me a couple months ago
- 39:07how do I collect modern cards? I know.
- 39:09Here you go. Now, I'm a modern collector.
- 39:12I mean, why would anybody buy that old stuff that you collect,
- 39:16Mike, of the guys who, you know, are all dead and nobody's ever
- 39:20heard of. Why would anybody buy those?
- 39:21You got to buy the modern stuff. You got to buy the modern cards
- 39:25of players that nobody's ever heard of.
- 39:27I have that's. What I'm doing?
- 39:28I have some mail days coming up that with some pretty big 1980s
- 39:33cards, autographs, yeah, Oh yeah, and one of them and a
- 39:38little tease for an upcoming mail day, a big mistake I made
- 39:43with PSA on on the PSA eBay account.
- 39:49I can't wait 'cause I because I know of it.
- 39:52I'm especially excited and it is worth tuning in for over at Junk
- 39:57Wax Hero on YouTube. Yeah.
- 40:01It's great. And my big news that I broke,
- 40:05that we talked about last week, nobody cares.
- 40:08Nobody cared about my big news that I broke.
- 40:11I in fact, there were some people who were upset about it.
- 40:14There was a comment that you shouldn't have shared the the
- 40:18screenshot of private messages without clearing it with with
- 40:23Ryan. And the point that I made is
- 40:26you're a YouTube. And this happens all the time.
- 40:30Ryan knows you're a YouTube. Ryan knows I'm a YouTube.
- 40:33If we're messaging him, we're going to use it on YouTube.
- 40:37I don't think Ryan knows I'm a YouTube if I'm being.
- 40:40No, he definitely does dude. Definitely does not I am you got
- 40:44to you got to remember I'm like I'm like in single a bro.
- 40:50I'm like a single a guy. Well, he's a prospector, so he's
- 40:53aware of who you are. I, I, yeah, you know, I did
- 40:57think about that, you know, and but that person, I'll say this,
- 41:02that person is right. It wasn't right for me to do
- 41:05that, but I still did it and I I don't regret doing it but but
- 41:13that probably wasn't the coolest thing ever for me to do.
- 41:17It is typically out of line. I agree with that person.
- 41:19Great commenter by the way. True Texan.
- 41:22Great great contributor. In this case though, I'm with
- 41:27you. I I message people all the time
- 41:31and they know I'm putting it on YouTube.
- 41:33It's just that's bad unless so like if let's pretend that we're
- 41:37journalists for minutes, we're not journalists, honestly, but
- 41:40if a journalist. Do we work for?
- 41:42Oh boy, let's not get ourselves in trouble if we're independent
- 41:46journalists. If a journalist reaches out to
- 41:48you, you need to specify yourself this can this stay off
- 41:55the record? And then the journalist needs to
- 41:57agree to keep it off the record. That is general journalism
- 42:01practice. You can't say off the record and
- 42:04then say it. That doesn't that doesn't fly.
- 42:08The journalist does not need to keep it off the record unless
- 42:10they have agreed to it upfront. I had an off the record moment
- 42:16in an interview one time. Can I share it?
- 42:18Can I break his confidence? When when I was in 8th grade, my
- 42:24English teacher was Missus Swank and we had no different Swank.
- 42:31I can't what was her first name? Can't remember.
- 42:34Lovely lady. And we had to do a report, a big
- 42:38project and we had to have a first person reference cited
- 42:43interview in our report. And I was doing mine on soccer
- 42:47and there was a player from the US Olympic national team who
- 42:53lived about 45 minutes away. And his orthodontist was friends
- 43:01with my stepdad. Somehow we arranged for me to
- 43:06have a conversation with him and I drove the 45 minutes to where
- 43:11he lived. And we met at a local like
- 43:14coffee shop and I interviewed him when I was in 8th grade and
- 43:18he said something to me. I'm taking notes, I'm asking him
- 43:21questions, I'm taking notes. His little 8th grade Greg
- 43:24student and I, he started saying something, but this has got to
- 43:28stay off the record. And I said, oh, OK, so I didn't
- 43:33know. I don't know what I'm doing, you
- 43:35know, So I, I, I go, OK, so I didn't write it down.
- 43:39But what he said was the reason our team, he really said this
- 43:44too. The the soccer player's name was
- 43:46Troy Dyack. And he was a defender.
- 43:51And he said our coach for the national team is terrible.
- 43:56If it wasn't for him, I think we were good enough to actually win
- 44:00the World Cup. And I'm like, oh, wow, really?
- 44:03And he's like, yeah, dude, we, we, we were trash.
- 44:07You know, Alexi Lawless was like our our best player, Kobe Jones.
- 44:11So but there I am. That's my story.
- 44:14I I like you know, I got to share these little tidbits
- 44:16because I got to keep these memories alive before my brain
- 44:20is complete mush. Yeah, I had a a call with a a
- 44:25very, very, very wealthy collector.
- 44:29It's probably it was coming up on two years ago.
- 44:33It was right around right around this time two years ago.
- 44:37Somebody who has mega cards, like the best cards imaginable.
- 44:43And he gave me some pretty wild quotes on this phone call.
- 44:49And I was like, I can say all these things on a video and he's
- 44:53like, Yep, go ahead. And so holy cow.
- 44:58So I'm literally, I'm, I'm taking my notes, turning them
- 45:01into like video ready notes. And then he called me back and
- 45:04said, on second thought, I don't want you to say any of those
- 45:07things. And I was like, but you said I
- 45:11could. And he's like, I'll trade you
- 45:14and I will give you some different information instead.
- 45:18And I said OK, I agree. And he?
- 45:20Gave us heard of this collector. Yeah.
- 45:24Oh wow. Yeah.
- 45:27OK, interesting. I can't wait for us to hit Stop
- 45:30recording so you can tell me all about it.
- 45:33What a tease. Maybe we should say maybe the
- 45:38title of this episode should be Mike.
- 45:44Mike breaks guidelines and spills the tea.
- 45:50No, OK. I still have the page of notes.
- 45:53I mean, it is a page of small handwritten notes.
- 45:57I still have it. There's a lot this this was a
- 46:01fun one. It was a long 146 minutes.
- 46:04My gosh. Yeah, I'm going to just say
- 46:06this. I'm going to say spare everybody
- 46:08the the comments down below. Your topic was probably better
- 46:11than mine, but it is a dilemma. It isn't a true dilemma that I
- 46:15felt this week as I was buying this car and I'm going what am I
- 46:19doing? Nobody else would do this.
- 46:21If something happened, I had to sell it.
- 46:23I couldn't get my money back and it's an unusual feeling.
- 46:26So I just wanted to see, is anybody else ever felt that or
- 46:30is it just me? Yeah.
- 46:33All right, bud, it was fun as always and anything you want to
- 46:39promote or shout out or anything, I, oh, I have a, if
- 46:42you're listening to this on the sports card clubhouse podcast
- 46:46network on on Monday night. It I have a live stream I'm
- 46:53doing which will be fun. Yeah, and you also have a new
- 46:57podcast episode out with Ash. That was a fun one.
