Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06Movie talk Show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, present it to the other end, discusses it at length.
- 0:17This week we've got, coming off of Dave's Shelf, 2008's Quantum
- 0:22of Solace, the second of the Daniel Craig Bond movies, this
- 0:28time directed by Marc Forster and written by Paul Haggis.
- 0:32It's more to talk about, of course, but David, here we are.
- 0:34Welcome back. Why this movie?
- 0:37Why now? It's.
- 0:39Really can't come to any surprise that this is coming off
- 0:41the shelf. No, it was.
- 0:42We kind of you led me down the primrose path with this one.
- 0:46Yes, indeedy. And it's a movie I again, I
- 0:49haven't seen for probably at least over a decade.
- 0:51OK, it's a movie that I think I liked.
- 0:54Oh yeah, but. Don't really remember much of
- 0:56it, a lot of chases if I recall, which is true, and I figured I'd
- 1:01expose you to a little bit more double O 7, you know, just get
- 1:05all the Daniel Craig of it all in there.
- 1:07And I appreciate it. First of all, right out of the
- 1:10gate, we have a new intro, obviously a new song.
- 1:13Yeah. Mr. Barry White, Jack White,
- 1:16Jack White and Alicia Keys. Yes, quite a quite a duo.
- 1:21He's pretty popular. I'm not really ever been a White
- 1:24Stripes Jack White fan, but he does the Conan O'Brien intro
- 1:29music which I assume you love. Yes, well, I don't love it.
- 1:32You love it, you love it. Think about it.
- 1:35I'm aware it's white stripes, sure, but I didn't realize Jack
- 1:38was involved in that. Yeah, he's the.
- 1:40White in The White Stripes. Oh OK, I thought it was the
- 1:42color. Like paint?
- 1:43Yes, I think it's a Dublin entendre.
- 1:46OK, I've been thinking about a lot of paint lately.
- 1:49I'm trying to I'm trying to pick up the right blue for my
- 1:51basement. Interesting actually.
- 1:52OK, so if you have any. Thoughts or ideas?
- 1:54Please share after the. I'm colorblind so dark and light
- 1:57is all I have to really to offer.
- 1:59OK, once again, Philip is no help, no help.
- 2:03What are your thoughts around? If you want to compare this to
- 2:05the last one, which we're going to do, we have to.
- 2:07But I mean, that's not going to be the the, the meat of the
- 2:09whole episode. Maybe it will be.
- 2:11But the reality is, yes, it is a sequel of of sorts.
- 2:15You love the cards last week. You love the Chris Cornell.
- 2:18You mentioned you didn't really care for, but I I like him
- 2:22generally. I like his voice generally.
- 2:23And so putting him into that, then I was kind of on board.
- 2:26What I will say about these two now is that neither seem to have
- 2:31the replayability. You know I'd song wise, song
- 2:36wise, yeah, strictly, I'm just talking about the song, the
- 2:39history of this franchise and the songs liver let die.
- 2:44It's. Gun Roses.
- 2:45Exactly. Yeah, not the original.
- 2:46No, the original, but that kind of song has has sort of stood
- 2:49the test of time. Use your illusion 1.
- 2:51I believe it's on. Yeah.
- 2:53And Columbia House, McCartney, Carly Simon, As I said, Duran
- 2:57Duran. Aha.
- 2:58Rightly, these iconic songs that have been like could be played
- 3:02on the radio and be part of your life.
- 3:05This song and the one prior while I liked Cornell's whatever
- 3:09that song was, it doesn't stick. But I would listen to like Tina
- 3:12Turner's Goldeneye. Of course I can listen to that
- 3:15on the old earbuds are. You wired or not wired?
- 3:19I'm always I'm wired ear to ear but it's Bluetooth after.
- 3:24Got you OK now luckily the movie movie itself has some
- 3:27replayability or does it Stay tuned and find out.
- 3:33I really only remember the end 10 minutes really.
- 3:37I watched this movie probably I want to say 3 or 4 times OK in
- 3:42my whole career on earth but and the last one is probably been
- 3:46roughly A decade. OK, I assumed I enjoyed it but I
- 3:51wasn't really sure so I was curious to see if I liked it
- 3:56upon this watch and along with your input, which I value, I
- 4:01want to say I do value your input history is proven once in
- 4:04a while. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 4:06Once a season. Usually you get it every week,
- 4:10but the value it sporadically at best.
- 4:14Let's talk a little bit about Mark Forrester.
- 4:16Can we? Yeah.
- 4:17Yeah, we can. We can.
- 4:19I don't have a lot to bring, I'll tell you that, because I
- 4:21looked at the list of movies that he's done and I have not
- 4:24watched any of them. None.
- 4:25Not even Monsters Ball, which I heard was a little overrated by
- 4:30somebody. You may have heard that from me.
- 4:33Yes, that movie won Halle Berry an Oscar.
- 4:36Good for her. I think she should have won it
- 4:39in Swordfish. Just saying, great work in that
- 4:42great. Work.
- 4:42You know, the whole ad campaign for Swordfish was basically
- 4:45like, you get to see my boobs. Yeah, of course, that was the
- 4:47whole thing. I remember her being on the.
- 4:48I have the DVD buddy. The MTV Movie Awards with
- 4:52Jackman and Travolta presenting the award and made some allusion
- 4:56to If you want to see these, you'll have to go to the movie.
- 4:59What a just bold maneuver and I never saw that movie.
- 5:04I own it and it probably did not survive the garage sale because
- 5:08of that. Some kid came along and like, I
- 5:10know. I know it's.
- 5:11It was a DVD with a flap. Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 5:14Warner Brothers picture. Yeah, yeah, they were doing
- 5:16that. So Mark Forster, I have to say
- 5:18when I when I saw his name on the credit, I thought, what is
- 5:22this guy doing directing this movie?
- 5:24The idea that the directors to my memory are interchangeable
- 5:30that there is no specific definitive repeat customer type
- 5:34of director seems as all for hire kind of situation.
- 5:37And we had talked about the hiring of Denis Villeneuve might
- 5:42put a sort of an authorist stamp on on a movie that so far I I
- 5:48hadn't thought that this series kind of has.
- 5:50And you know, I knew Forster from Monsters Ball, obviously
- 5:55this very kind of heavy-handed, racialized sort of storytelling.
- 6:00And World War Z maybe more familiar to something like
- 6:04Stranger Than Fiction and recently A Man Called Otto.
- 6:08I think this guy is not a good director.
- 6:11Or at least attach themselves to products, projects that I do not
- 6:13particularly care for so. This sounds like something you
- 6:15put some thought into. Well, I just knew the guy and I
- 6:18thought this doesn't bode well now so.
- 6:22We're in trouble already. But just the idea of how does a
- 6:24guy like this, who directed something like Finding
- 6:28Neverland, this quiet movie about JM Barry, who wrote Peter
- 6:31Pan, did they find it? They've did.
- 6:34I guess I'll have to watch it now, which is like a totally
- 6:36mediocre sappy drama. And Christopher Robin, another
- 6:40one, right, that he gets this, this Bond movie.
- 6:43It just strikes me as odd. Do you think that this director,
- 6:46generally speaking, will get specific?
- 6:48Do you think he was up for the task compared to the last movie
- 6:51or compared to some of these? Out of these actions he goes out
- 6:53of this movie play out stylist. From that perspective, Phil, I
- 6:56think he was a little over ambitious, overstepped, I might
- 7:01say, trying to do too much. Sometimes too much is, well,
- 7:05it's too much, it's too much, I'll come out and say it.
- 7:08So I was a little disappointed with his thought process.
- 7:12What he wanted to do with the movie with the final product was
- 7:15going to look like, and I say this multiple times that there
- 7:19is a good movie in this, but I really mean it for this.
- 7:23OK. I think if they re edit this
- 7:24movie, it's a lot better. You think it's an editing
- 7:27problem? I think it's like a mostly I
- 7:29would say it's the problems I have with this movie are 90%
- 7:32editing. Wow.
- 7:33Yeah, OK. So I think there's good stuff.
- 7:35I think it's a good a good film. OK, Like Bold Despite that.
- 7:39Sure. But it could have been a lot
- 7:40better. So.
- 7:41And I think it comes down, I mean, someone has to take
- 7:43responsibility for this and it comes down on Mr. Forrest.
- 7:45Yeah. Ultimately, yeah, ultimately,
- 7:48yeah. He's got a, he's got a answer
- 7:50for this. One thing I will say when we're
- 7:53talking about responsibility, some of it has to go to Mr. Paul
- 7:58Haggis, in addition to Neil Purvis and and Robert Wade of
- 8:01the three credited writers. But Paul Haggis?
- 8:05Yeah, let's let's pin it on him. Is a fucking joke.
- 8:08Wow. He sucks and the fact that.
- 8:13I don't have any history on him, what he's done.
- 8:14Well, you know, David, there was a story I told not that many
- 8:17weeks ago about getting so mad at the 2006 Academy Awards that
- 8:23I stormed out of my house in his own house, leaving people
- 8:27watching the television, wondering what's going on.
- 8:29I was so mad because that was the year of Brokeback Mountain.
- 8:34Good night and good luck. Capote.
- 8:35Crash. Crash the writer, director of
- 8:39Crash. I took it home.
- 8:41I. Took it home, best picture.
- 8:43I think you won the best director, best writer like it
- 8:44was just the. Are you an outlier on this or
- 8:47was this a common thing where people were really surprised
- 8:50that it won or and or disappointed?
- 8:52I think I think this. Is a you?
- 8:54Thing. It's partly me for sure.
- 8:56I think history has not been kind.
- 8:58I think that when some people watch that movie and they think
- 9:02wow really deep and smart, people think wow really cheap.
- 9:07And that's ultimately what I thought it was like.
- 9:09So razor thin, but emotionally hitting the beats.
- 9:13There's a little girl that dies in a gun and not a gun.
- 9:16And so my kind of movie, really. Yeah, thin and easy to.
- 9:19I like thin and easy. Yeah.
- 9:20Was Sarah Polly in that? No, I'm getting mixed up with
- 9:23something. Sandra Bullock was in it.
- 9:25Ryan Phillippi? Matt Dillon.
- 9:29You like Ryan Terrence Howard. Anyway, just a garbage movie.
- 9:34History's not been kind too. And I was even more disappointed
- 9:36because he also, I think, wrote $1,000,000 Baby, which is a
- 9:41movie I hated as well. OK.
- 9:43Well, Philip, what movie am I thinking of?
- 9:45Of Sarah Polley? Do you know there's a car
- 9:47involved? As a go that you're referring.
- 9:49To go. Yeah, early 2000s.
- 9:51That's what I'm getting mixed up with.
- 9:52I've got go mixed up with. Crash 98, maybe 98?
- 9:55Yeah, that's somewhere. In that region, OK, there we go.
- 9:57Well, Crash sucks and Paul Haggis is a hack.
- 10:00OK. But go was great.
- 10:02Go was great. Sure, yeah.
- 10:03Anything with Doug Lyman directed that one.
- 10:05There you go. We love a Doug Lyman film, don't
- 10:07we? Yep.
- 10:08What we also like Phillip, if we can get into the film now, if
- 10:10you don't mind sure we can't avoid it forever.
- 10:13It immediately gets into a car chase right out of.
- 10:17The gate and this you told me about you not necessarily the
- 10:21the car chase specifically, but you said this last week that the
- 10:24structure of these movies is always something and then the
- 10:29title sequence. And so I knew that I kind of
- 10:32anticipated that this was going to open with something
- 10:34happening. And this was the something.
- 10:36That's just something. Last week we talked about the
- 10:38something first. Yes, this time we talked about
- 10:40the Jack Y of a change. You jump right to the music can
- 10:44help it. Now we're changing.
- 10:45Couldn't help it. Couldn't help it.
- 10:46Love, Alicia. And this is where the editing
- 10:48right from the start, the quick cuts, yeah, it doesn't allow you
- 10:52to sink your teeth into anything that's happening on the screen.
- 10:54It's too much for your brain even to compute.
- 10:57So really, it's just a waste of time.
- 10:59Yeah, my note is really like a car chase right away I wrote
- 11:02uninspired. Like there's just nothing
- 11:04exciting about. It and even with your favorite
- 11:07type of scene, which is a trunk, we have your old pal Mr. White,
- 11:13which I made sure I just kept that under wraps, that we would
- 11:17see Mr. White again. Mr. White.
- 11:20But this is new to me because the Pierce Brosnan was very
- 11:25episodic. Yeah, my understanding of Bond
- 11:28historically as being one and done.
- 11:29It's like self-contained stories.
- 11:31But this seems to be a carry on, yeah.
- 11:34And when I watch shows today, I enjoy the fact that Bosch, which
- 11:39there is a spin off coming, yeah.
- 11:40Yeah, yeah, you mentioned. Ballard.
- 11:42Yeah, OK with. Maggie Q if you're interested
- 11:46and every season is a thing, yes, in the 80s and 90s,
- 11:51MacGyver, A-Team maybe you got a 2 parter, but most at most.
- 11:55Or maybe like a cliffhanger like the Borg in Star Trek, right?
- 11:59That was a big cliffhanger, a big thing.
- 12:01But generally everything stands on its own and people overtime
- 12:05characters develop, couple thematic elements will continue
- 12:08throughout something it's married or some changes happen
- 12:10that carry through. But generally speaking, it's a
- 12:14brand new episode every time. So to have the continuation, if
- 12:18you will, is something that surprised me at first, but I
- 12:22kind of was OK with it and got on board with it because you
- 12:25want to tell a story that's longer than two hours.
- 12:27Yeah, that surprised me. One bad guy.
- 12:29Per New Girl, new bad guy and blah blah blah happens and the
- 12:34movie's over and it starts again reset, like I sort of alluded to
- 12:37last week, levels of bad guys and they they're sort of.
- 12:42Get the little fish and then you're getting up towards the
- 12:44big fish, which in other words, a surprise again, Matt, it's not
- 12:47being the bad guy really, not really just had an eye problem,
- 12:50asthmatic money issues, gambling problem, so forth and so on.
- 12:54Just a regular guy really sounded like me.
- 12:57Yeah, 30 that's Phil fills the bad guy here.
- 13:01But what I don't like about it is it can kind of what's the
- 13:05word it starts with C convolute is.
- 13:07That right is that the right word Convolute the the process
- 13:10yeah. I was very surprised to find
- 13:12that this making specific reference to and having
- 13:16connective tissue to Vesper, Mr. White, even our old pal Mathis
- 13:22showing up at some point, you know, so these are things where
- 13:25I'm like, oh, it's, it's more of that continuation than I would
- 13:29have anticipated. And again, I don't know if that
- 13:31continues, but. I'm not going to tell you a
- 13:33little bit. I thought of like Halloween too.
- 13:36Yes, that's right. And you have to answer a
- 13:38question for me this week hit me, was this movie better than
- 13:42Halloween too? I know it's tough to compare the
- 13:46completely different genres and you've been watching Halloween
- 13:48for for years. So it's more of a question of
- 13:51how you felt about this versus the last one versus how I felt
- 13:55about Halloween after Halloween, you know?
- 13:57I strangely if I remember I think you liked two more than I
- 14:01did because 2 is pretty low on my.
- 14:03On the overall on my way. I thought Halloween 2 started
- 14:07strong and fell apart after. I didn't like the kills, that
- 14:11they were pretty unimaginative. Unless, you know, the heat, The
- 14:13bathtub, the bathtub, the hot tub.
- 14:15There, that was great. This one I think is maybe even
- 14:20more disappointing than Halloween too, because.
- 14:23I because we're coming in strong that's.
- 14:25The thing I think my my level of my love of Halloween 1 is built
- 14:28in for for 25 years like you're saying, 30 years of watching it
- 14:32more than that, probably. Like masterpiece you may have.
- 14:34Used that, yeah, absolutely a perfect film.
- 14:37But this, I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed Casino Royale
- 14:41that I was kind of pumped for this one.
- 14:45And ultimately, we'll get into the specifics, but I think this
- 14:48movie is a mess and I think that it struggles to have any of the
- 14:52highs I felt while watching Casino Royale.
- 14:56This one does not deliver. Now you said it's a mess.
- 14:58Would you go as far as to say it's a hot mess?
- 15:03That's my hot take. Hot take, hot mess.
- 15:07I want to disagree with you, but I'm going to try to salvage it.
- 15:11I'm going to try to see if I can find that good movie in here
- 15:14because I know it exists. I just think it does take a
- 15:17complete re edit to make it good.
- 15:18But there are some elements I did still like the character
- 15:21itself, the growth or lack thereof of the Bond character,
- 15:27the other characters of the supporting cast of it all.
- 15:29We have some new faces, but I'm going to have to bring it back
- 15:32to Mr. White though. Philip, we have to.
- 15:34We have to. We just got to he's this whole
- 15:36movie is sort of. It's, it's, it's begun.
- 15:40Because he is the mastermind. Yeah, supposedly.
- 15:44For now. For now, we might level up, I
- 15:46don't know. I'm not telling you, but after
- 15:49the car chase. We realize these are the trunk.
- 15:53These are the trunk. Yeah.
- 15:55And I think you fell in love. Yes, or not too.
- 15:58So they take and they take them. Where are we?
- 16:01Do you know where we are? What country?
- 16:02It's gorgeous. Italy.
- 16:04Maybe again for the 4th time. Fifth time, I don't know.
- 16:07Doesn't really matter. They're in a sewer.
- 16:10That's really more that matter. I wouldn't say sewer.
- 16:12Is that a sewer? What is that?
- 16:13Are they in a sewer? They're below ground.
- 16:15I I feel like, you know. Sure.
- 16:18Definitely in some sort of bunker maybe.
- 16:20Yeah. Some hideout.
- 16:21Yeah. Hideout of sorts.
- 16:22No, no, no traffic coming through.
- 16:24Yes, that's the big thing. But there's a lot, there's a lot
- 16:26going on outside, of course, with the horses.
- 16:29More horses. Yeah, I believe they're horses.
- 16:31Yeah, that's right. There's a thing happening.
- 16:33Yes. That's what's going on there.
- 16:35Some sort of Derby. Yeah, it's a horse Derby, but
- 16:39they need a question, Mr. White. They want answers.
- 16:41They want answers. Right.
- 16:42He's the only person that James Bond didn't kill in the last
- 16:45movie, yes. He tried not to kill them.
- 16:47But how do you feel about this little chat with Mr. White?
- 16:51I was surprised to see him, and I really, after the end of the
- 16:54last movie, you were surprised to see him.
- 16:56I assumed he would have died. OK, You're thinking you're
- 16:59getting into a brand new movie. I think I'm getting into a brand
- 17:01new movie, Right. Again, I don't know that this is
- 17:03a larger story. So when he pops the trunk and I
- 17:06they, you know, are interrogating him, I'm like, oh,
- 17:09this is interesting. I didn't expect that.
- 17:11OK, good around your toes. You're on the edge of your seat.
- 17:14That's right. And he has the the one moment I
- 17:16really like in this opening part is where he is laughing at em,
- 17:21you know, for the overconfidence.
- 17:23You shouldn't laugh at em but. That, that they have, you know,
- 17:26it's like, you know, we have people everywhere and you don't
- 17:28even know us. And then one of their security
- 17:31guards, Mitchell Mitchell Mitchell shoots the other one.
- 17:34Yeah. At first I was like, well,
- 17:36that's clever, I like that, Yeah.
- 17:38And upon further reflection, I think you've got the leader of
- 17:41MI 6 and the potentially whom everybody can assume is the
- 17:45greatest spy in the history of the game.
- 17:48Top ten at least. 6 inches away from you.
- 17:50Why has it taken this long? Why are you not killing M if
- 17:54this guy has been her right hand person for 8 plus years or
- 17:58something? Eight years.
- 17:59Mitchell was eight years. You're going to shoot the least
- 18:02potent person in the room. Terry.
- 18:05Terry. He shot Terry.
- 18:06Yeah, he killed Terry. And you're.
- 18:08Terry had to come in, though. And and you're getting nothing
- 18:10out of that. Terry took his lunch.
- 18:12Terry for eight years, Terry was taken Mitchell's lunch.
- 18:16That's a good point. Right away, this app doesn't
- 18:17make sense. You're done.
- 18:19You're you're it's fine. But I'm like, again, you're
- 18:21setting this up as high stakes and that's such the silliest
- 18:24thing I could think. Of it happened so fast now 8.
- 18:27Years like you haven't had a chance to assassinate the head
- 18:30of the the British. I can explain that, please.
- 18:33You need her because that's where you're getting
- 18:36information, OK. There's no point in killing her
- 18:39because they're just going to replace her with somebody else.
- 18:41So that just seems pointless. So you're, you're there just to
- 18:44kind of have ears, a family on the wall.
- 18:46OK, I'll accept that's that's actually totally reasonable.
- 18:49That's a rare 1. You know when you're in that
- 18:51situation for like to see how you react.
- 18:53I'm going for Terry. Because you really like your
- 18:56lunch. As we talked about in the
- 18:59Insider, it is the best meal, the lunch you got, it is the
- 19:03best. But what this does create is
- 19:06chase #2 yes, now this will be a bit of a theme.
- 19:11We go, we, we've gone car already could check Mark car
- 19:14chase. Yes, now we can check Mark foot
- 19:16chase. Yep, him and Mitchell go at it.
- 19:20And one thing that I did appreciate from Casino Royale,
- 19:23just took a quick note, Parkour. No, no, later the stairwell
- 19:28scene. I went on record saying I love a
- 19:30stairwell scene. And I'm going to back that up
- 19:32right now is Bond went through the door, stopped, wait for him
- 19:37to come to the door and pointed his gut at him.
- 19:39Great move. Mitchell should have went to
- 19:42that school because that's all he had to do, right?
- 19:46He went through a few doors. He had to just has to turn
- 19:49around, wait for him to come. Bond doesn't have a gun and just
- 19:52you're done. That's always bothered me that
- 19:54they don't do that. Yeah, it's questionable kind of
- 19:57structure. Yeah, now it makes sense for a
- 19:59bond to ring the bell. Might confuse a few people The
- 20:04church time. Yeah, I thought this chase
- 20:06generally went on too long, but I like the ending of it.
- 20:09I like the hanging upside down shooting kind of into camera as
- 20:13he's looking up, OK, as he's dangling.
- 20:15You like that? I thought that's from the
- 20:16trailer. I kind of have a memory of that
- 20:18image from the trailer. I like the scenic up on a roof
- 20:21and in the rooms and then whatever the sort of structure
- 20:23of it. But I didn't find it was edited
- 20:25to your point interestingly, and stylistically wasn't it was Also
- 20:29this movie's very brown. It it it is very brown I.
- 20:33Found the movie is sort of lifeless at times because of it.
- 20:36I like it. I liked it, but it does run into
- 20:40that potential problem. Now I'm also, as I mentioned,
- 20:43color blind. So, I mean, there could have
- 20:44very well been, yeah. Yeah, it's right.
- 20:47Very vibrant. It was green, actually.
- 20:50That last scene wasn't in the desert fell.
- 20:52It was actually in the Amazon. That's right.
- 20:54So. Eight years, though, Mitchell,
- 20:56eight years and M had no idea. And they're pulling up all the
- 20:59information on them and all that stuff.
- 21:02They Mosey on back to London, where it's a little bit less
- 21:05brown, but rainy Gray. Yeah, very Gray.
- 21:09But what was really cool, I thought, was the technology.
- 21:14When they go into this room with this giant sort of display unit
- 21:18in the middle and their touch screen, I think that's really
- 21:22cool, I think. They did a really good job with
- 21:24that. Yeah, it's always really clever.
- 21:25And it's cool what you're doing now because it's not too
- 21:27dissimilar to stuff that we're seeing now with obviously AI and
- 21:30VR and, you know, this ability to interact with things.
- 21:34You know, there's a game, Maestro, that just come out and
- 21:36it uses hand tracking. You don't even need your
- 21:38controllers. You just have to wave your hands
- 21:40and it goes where you are. Like Bob Cobb.
- 21:43That's right, Maestro. But what happens in London if,
- 21:54correct me if I'm wrong, they do get a lead, luckily, and it
- 21:58takes them to What are your favorite places?
- 22:01Haiti. Yeah, who can hate Haiti?
- 22:05It's not on my top 10 destinations.
- 22:07Port-au-Prince Port. Au Prince Lovely this time of
- 22:09year where we get to meet your favorite gal.
- 22:13Yeah, Olga. Somebody.
- 22:16Kurienko. Kurienko.
- 22:18She sucks. She's fucking terrible
- 22:21generally. Oh my God, well this is the only
- 22:23other movie now that I've seen her in.
- 22:24So I don't think are we at 3 strikes, you're out.
- 22:27I think we're at 2 strikes. Just two.
- 22:28I couldn't. Stand it, I have another on the
- 22:30shelf with her in there. No 3 strikes.
- 22:33She was in Max Payne. Wow, she played the sister.
- 22:36That is a very. Deep cut and I Yeah, long
- 22:39thought forgot about that movie yeah, but then that is 3 you're
- 22:41out. I think we can't ever touch her
- 22:43again. You're right.
- 22:44Oblivion. She was absolutely the worst
- 22:46part about it. No chemistry and.
- 22:48Tom's got to take some responsibility, of course.
- 22:50But I think it's now, now that I've seen this, she has zero
- 22:52with her with him. And I think that Strawberry
- 22:55Fields, Jim Arderton and Eva Green from the last movie both
- 23:01had far more, far more chemistry with him then then then she
- 23:05does. And so my issue is now with her
- 23:09specifically, she sucks. And I think everything she's
- 23:12saying in this movie, her entire performance, I think is
- 23:15absolutely terrible. I don't think that's a hot take.
- 23:17I think this has been, you know. It's been well litigated.
- 23:22I mean my note is honestly like Olga sucks.
- 23:25But don't you think she'd be really good in a boat chase?
- 23:28If she was going in the opposite direction and I didn't have to
- 23:31chase after her, then yeah, she's terrible.
- 23:34OK. I, I, I think any emotional way.
- 23:36We talked last week about Eva Green in the shower after the
- 23:42emotional breakdown of what happened.
- 23:44You were, yeah. And I.
- 23:45Don't know. I was like, I thought it was a
- 23:46really good. Performance.
- 23:47That was your favorite scene? It really was sucking on a
- 23:49finger. Sucking on a finger, Yeah, it's
- 23:51a good move. And this movie tries to do
- 23:53something very similar later on during the end where she has
- 23:57experienced this trauma and she's wrestling with her
- 24:01villain, her bad guy as it were. All thing going.
- 24:04On and she's sitting in a corner, effectively trapped and
- 24:07hamstrung by the story, and there is so little life or
- 24:13interest by this point. What if he had sucked on her
- 24:16finger though? What if they put her in a trunk?
- 24:18And sucked on her. Finger and then sucked on her
- 24:20finger. You might get something
- 24:21happening here, but that didn't happen.
- 24:23But no Olga. I just I was so disappointed
- 24:25when I saw the name. I shouldn't say I had low
- 24:28expectations when I saw the name because I remember how much I
- 24:31disliked her in oblivion. But you're willing to give her.
- 24:33I was willing to say this is a Tom problem.
- 24:34It's a script problem. Like I said, give me another
- 24:36chance. She she's got one more strike.
- 24:38I really forgot about Max Payne, but I just think she's bad in
- 24:42this. I don't know what your thoughts
- 24:44are but I thought she's bad. I would love to go to bat for I
- 24:47would, but it's. But I can't.
- 24:51I can't and I won't. I won't.
- 24:53I'm not going to make, I'm not going to make excuses for her.
- 24:55I don't want to pour on too much onto your wound here.
- 24:59But we also get to meet what we think is going to be the bad guy
- 25:02of this movie. Yeah, because she runs back to
- 25:05him. Sure, she ultimately is the bad
- 25:07guy of this movie. Yeah, ultimately, ultimately
- 25:09there isn't really anyone above him at this.
- 25:11Point We don't know where Mr. White is.
- 25:13I guess, but you know Mr. White, can't he better not be 5 movies
- 25:18worth? I don't know.
- 25:19They had him twice. They could have.
- 25:20Killed him. Not going to tell you, but but
- 25:22what are your initial thoughts? We'll get to your, you know,
- 25:25we'll see if you swing a little bit later, but this is our our
- 25:28feature. Bad dude.
- 25:30Yeah. What's your first impression of
- 25:31him? Not a not great, not great.
- 25:34He kind of has a Mads vibe. Foreign accent, wide eyes.
- 25:39His eyes were a little bit odd. Yeah, like always, just sort of
- 25:44weirdly broadened out. And to me, these movies are kind
- 25:47of what I think. When I think of these movies, I
- 25:49think of again, the villains and the gadgets.
- 25:52The gadgets. Travelogue, which is one thing
- 25:54they've been getting right. Yeah, but again, because you're
- 25:57going to these brown, Gray places this time I'm like, I'm
- 26:00not getting that the woman is, regardless of attractive or not,
- 26:04just completely terrible in terms of performance and actor.
- 26:07And then this villain I think is so generically milk toast.
- 26:12Bland performance. I don't think his performance is
- 26:15that bad, I just don't think he has a lot to work with.
- 26:17No chemistry like himself and he just has no like there's just
- 26:21nothing. He's very flat and boring to me
- 26:23and he never rose above that. I'm like, OK, he's the quiet
- 26:27malicious. Type.
- 26:29He's a jerk. Yeah, sure.
- 26:30He's an asshole. Yeah.
- 26:32I wouldn't be friends. I'm sitting on a couch next to
- 26:34one. It just happens.
- 26:36But. But as a performer, as a
- 26:38character, I just don't know that there's anything there.
- 26:41All right. I do like that the bond was
- 26:44introduced as a geologist. Yeah.
- 26:46And I was wondering if Pacino has anything to say about that?
- 26:49You know what? I'm going to make a quick note
- 26:51on Pacino. Yeah, from Glengarry Glen Ross.
- 26:55I talked about not being a big fan of his dialogue.
- 26:57You did the whole thing. I was in the kitchen opening up
- 27:00a cupboard. This is shortly after, you know,
- 27:03some changes in my life with work and stuff.
- 27:06I got it. Everything he said just click
- 27:09with me. Yeah.
- 27:10And it was a, it was a brief moment like I, I, I get it.
- 27:14I get it now. And it was, it was such clarity.
- 27:18I'm like, man, it was just an interesting moment I had in the
- 27:21kitchen. I normally don't have
- 27:22interesting moments in the kitchen.
- 27:24No, not like the wigands. No, no, no.
- 27:27I've had a few fights in the kitchen, though.
- 27:29Sure. Yeah, it makes sense.
- 27:30Usually it's my fault. But anyways, back to the movie
- 27:33and let me look at my watch. It is time for another chase.
- 27:37Exactly. We've checked.
- 27:40Marked car foot. So what do we have left here?
- 27:42Well, we have a boat, so let's let's hit the water.
- 27:46Do that. Yeah, the seas.
- 27:47I love it. I absolutely love a good boat
- 27:50chase. Patriot Games, if you recall.
- 27:53Striking distance. Yeah, I've brought a lot of
- 27:56river around goodies off the shelf when it comes to
- 28:00transportation in the ocean or the waterfront, wherever.
- 28:03White Squaw eventually coming off of my shelf.
- 28:05I can't wait. I can't wait.
- 28:07Isn't it? Wow.
- 28:08What's his face in that? Jeff Bridges.
- 28:10OK, I was thinking of Dennis Quaid.
- 28:12OK, back to the boat. He Bond, When I say he, I mean
- 28:17Bond thinks he's doing the right thing and saving the girl.
- 28:20Yeah, that's his. That's his instincts she wants.
- 28:23This guy a presidente? Yeah, because he.
- 28:27Caused some trouble for her family, killed her parents from
- 28:30what I gather. Killed her father and then
- 28:32raped. And brother, she does not.
- 28:34Like that, she's not a fan. No.
- 28:36And she wants revenge, which is a bit of a theme in this movie.
- 28:40Absolutely. So we have a parallel.
- 28:42Yep, revenge theme that I think is actually good.
- 28:45Interesting storytelling. Thank you I.
- 28:47Don't know if it's executed well, but in terms of
- 28:49applauding, yeah, absolutely. If she was a better actor and
- 28:52like there was better writing to get there, I was like, this is
- 28:55the story. If they do the other 18 things
- 28:57right, I again when I think about like.
- 28:59Last of Us Part 2 Have you ever? Have you played that or?
- 29:01No, I haven't. No.
- 29:03Well, to spoil it, it basically is a revenge tale told through
- 29:07two different perspectives. OK.
- 29:09And they kind of go on their separate ways to revenge a
- 29:15connected thing between these two characters, but they're on
- 29:18separate paths and converging parallel, parallel until they're
- 29:22convergence. And you're like, okay.
- 29:24And then you get to pick whose side you're on and like some
- 29:26nuance and some interesting emotional pathos in the middle
- 29:30of that. Sounds good.
- 29:33It doesn't do that, unfortunately.
- 29:34It they they stay so far sort of separate to one another that
- 29:38there isn't that except for that one scene in The Cave, which I
- 29:40think just doesn't offer the weight to her saying you have to
- 29:46tell me what it's like to, you know, to when you solve the
- 29:48revenge, right? Like that kind of thing.
- 29:50I've been even sure that's a cave.
- 29:52I don't know what makes sink cave a cave.
- 29:53A sinkhole. OK, there's a difference.
- 29:55Well, it's under, under the ground.
- 29:58Well you know who isn't under the ground is Felix, cuz he's in
- 30:02the sky. Yeah, it's hanging out.
- 30:05Another character I was surprised to see come back.
- 30:07Yeah, at this point I kind of figured.
- 30:09All the greats come back. You know how much I loved him in
- 30:11the first one. You.
- 30:12Didn't like him in the first. That's.
- 30:13Right. And I liked him enough in the
- 30:15first one. He wasn't.
- 30:17I like him as an actor, but he's completely wasted here.
- 30:19This maybe this is. This whole subplot is wasted to
- 30:21me. The CIA, the CIA bid.
- 30:23What's your deal on the Langley? What's your thoughts on this?
- 30:25I only enjoyed it because his buddy there, David Harbour.
- 30:28David Harbour. I worked with a guy that is.
- 30:31Borderlining on doppelganger. Wow.
- 30:33The way he looks. Yeah.
- 30:35And the way he speaks, he's got a very distinct voice.
- 30:38And he's a wonderful person in real life, actually, Yeah, I
- 30:41heard he's a monster. Oh, OK.
- 30:43What are the odds I got it wrong?
- 30:45I mean, this is pretty common in probably in real life and real
- 30:48politics and all that is they're willing to get their hands a
- 30:51little bit dirty if there, you know?
- 30:53Yeah, if they get what they want, they'll turn the blind
- 30:55eye. It's the way they work in
- 30:57criminal cases too, right? You get the low guys, Yeah, give
- 31:00them immunity so that they can topple the big guys.
- 31:04It's all about the size of the fish.
- 31:05Exactly. Yes, exactly.
- 31:06I had fish last night for dinner.
- 31:08Yeah. It was the size of that one.
- 31:09It was pretty thick, OK, It took 25 minutes to to cook.
- 31:13Searing it. I put in the oven.
- 31:15I bake it at 4050. Interesting.
- 31:17Yeah. I marinate it randomly with
- 31:18whatever I can find. Little oil and, you know, black
- 31:20pepper, salmon. That's my go to.
- 31:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:23Pretty staple. Atlantic farmed.
- 31:26Lived a happy life. Let's get to a showcase scene.
- 31:30My favorite scene in the movie. OK, well, OK, take it easy.
- 31:35I would. I would.
- 31:36Gee, shit. I might just agree with that.
- 31:38Wow, That was hard to say, to be honest with you.
- 31:41Yeah, that's true. That is true.
- 31:42This is the one good scene of the movie.
- 31:43I think that it. I was kidding.
- 31:45I think part of the reason why it's so good is the editing in
- 31:48this section allows you to follow along and understand
- 31:52what's going on. Yeah, For me, it's the things
- 31:54that I think of when I think of James Bond, I think of spying, I
- 31:58think of. Yeah, it's the gadgetry, the
- 32:01cleverness of calling them out because he's got their wire.
- 32:04Yeah, he's plugged in and he's listening to their
- 32:06conversations. He then interrupts them so he
- 32:08can signal that these 8 or so you should meet at a better
- 32:12place, right? Start getting up.
- 32:13So they all start getting up, the gadgets clicking in, right.
- 32:16And so he's ahead of the game. He's doing appropriate.
- 32:19Doing a great job. A spy thing.
- 32:21He's not just shooting every Right, like, so it's like here
- 32:23is the the spy version of what Bond is or could be.
- 32:27Yeah. And I thought all of that was
- 32:29really well executed, as well as listening to these assholes talk
- 32:33about the way. They're going.
- 32:34To they're going to kind of overtake everybody.
- 32:37It's not quite the opera scene from Tenet.
- 32:39Of course, which is very visceral as well.
- 32:42But I thought the intercutting was really interesting too.
- 32:44He did execute one person, bodyguard of one of the guys.
- 32:48So he's not going to get through this without one body count or
- 32:51he wouldn't be James Bond. That's OK.
- 32:54Yeah, this is the sort of scene where they intercut between
- 32:56what's happening on the stage. This is the only part of the
- 33:00movie sequence of the movie where I thought there's a style
- 33:03being implemented. I don't really love it
- 33:05necessarily, but I think it's perfectly functional and like it
- 33:08works. Intercutting can work.
- 33:10Intercutting cannot work. And I told you in the beginning
- 33:12of the movie when they have the horse stuff happening outside
- 33:15and they were. I did not like that.
- 33:17That was just dysfunctional. The worst intercutting I've ever
- 33:21seen in my life, which we hopefully will never get to, is
- 33:24Episode 1 Star Wars Phantom Menace.
- 33:26It's the worst. I'm glad that we were able to,
- 33:29you know, latch on like a nipple to the scene.
- 33:31It's a it's a good one, Yeah. And I think doesn't.
- 33:34Work out well though. No, she's not happy.
- 33:37She's peeved. Yeah, she's peeved.
- 33:40But before she's peeved, well, she's always peeved.
- 33:43Let's be honest, She's not. Ever.
- 33:45She has been peeved the entire time.
- 33:46Yeah, she's more upset than normal, and she does something a
- 33:50little rash, in my opinion. Yeah, sure.
- 33:53Cuts off his credit cards. Not pretty.
- 33:55Not pretty. Yeah, he's trying to get a
- 33:57flight out and cannot. So what do you do, Phillip?
- 34:01When you need friends, you need friends and he doesn't have a
- 34:04lot. Not a lot.
- 34:05He doesn't, he says at the beginning of the movie.
- 34:06I don't have friends, but he's got one.
- 34:08Turns out. Your best buddy this It was a
- 34:11shock or you were. Surprised to see Mr. Mathis.
- 34:14Yeah, and I was really disappointed.
- 34:16How so and why? To me, it's like retcon.
- 34:19I don't know the plan for this movie.
- 34:21I have no idea if it was always going to be Mathis and he was
- 34:25built in from the ground up, but watching the movie in its
- 34:28totality and certainly coming off of Casino Royale last week
- 34:32where he's the bad guy or at least a two timer.
- 34:35Swings both ways. Yeah, gets tasered and dragged
- 34:38off to nowhere. Happened to a friend of mine.
- 34:42Assuming to be not seen from again.
- 34:44You're so naive, fellow. That these people are coming
- 34:46back so. Naive.
- 34:47But to me, I'm thinking it put a bond in some pretty questionable
- 34:51situations, arguably a lot of money.
- 34:52So he's not a good person. So the fact that he just shows
- 34:56up magically here and is only in the movie for 9 minutes feels
- 35:01very like we don't know how to solve this problem because I
- 35:05don't buy that relationship at all.
- 35:06The way I understand this lifestyle is you don't really
- 35:11ever have friends. They're your friends when you
- 35:13need something, and Mathis can provide a service that he needs
- 35:18so that he has to buddy buddy with them.
- 35:20They can have a joke, have a glass of wine.
- 35:22Is the one expensive? We're not really sure.
- 35:25Yeah, As an actor, I have no real problems other than just
- 35:27like, I don't buy that relationship.
- 35:29And I was surprised to see. Him.
- 35:30I think you're nitpicking. I think it's bad storytelling.
- 35:32I think you have it out for him. I think I don't know why
- 35:34storytelling well, and if I'm nitpicking a bad story point, I
- 35:38stand by it. Nonetheless, he gets the
- 35:41passports he needs, yes, from his good temporary friend
- 35:44Mathis, so he can go where he needs.
- 35:48To go to a dinner party, yes. With some shitty people, yes,
- 35:53basically. But he gets to meet the
- 35:56beautiful strawberry fields. Strawberry fields.
- 35:59Nice name. It's a cute name.
- 36:01Gemma Arterton. Yeah, very pretty girl.
- 36:03Very pretty. I feel like I've seen her
- 36:04somewhere but I couldn't put a finger on it.
- 36:06Yeah, me neither, but I was impressed.
- 36:08Yeah, yeah. That's a finger.
- 36:09I would suck even a thumb. I would even downgrade to the
- 36:13thumb Yeah, if push came to shove.
- 36:21One of the things that we talked about that I don't think this
- 36:23movie does enough of, and I think I would find it a more
- 36:26interesting movie if it did, is this idea of forgiveness, of
- 36:30revenge. When Matheson here having this
- 36:32quiet moment as Mathis is dying in his arms and asks, do we
- 36:36forgive each other? And then you can forgive
- 36:39yourself if this story could better entwine the dramatic
- 36:44impulses of the character and the story and the gravity of
- 36:47what's happening with the action set pieces.
- 36:49Yes, And the travel. All like all the gadgetry and
- 36:52all the fun stuff. All well.
- 36:53Blended in the first one, yeah. I thought was well executed and
- 36:55this I just think, here's a moment, OK.
- 36:58Is it Bon reckoning with what he lost in the first one?
- 37:02Is that the impetus for the second movie?
- 37:05And it isn't really, but it touches on that it is supposed
- 37:08to be. Movie doesn't respect itself or
- 37:09respect that storyline enough to spend enough time in it.
- 37:12Had he said Mathis with his dying words, don't let it end
- 37:17this way, you know, like from Star Trek 6, Gorkin.
- 37:20Sure. I think it would have mattered
- 37:21more. Yeah, Yeah.
- 37:23And if again, I'm looking at the clock, not the watch, but the
- 37:27clock on the wall. It's chase time.
- 37:29It's chase time. We have Olga, I believe is in
- 37:32the plane. Yeah, he's in the plane because
- 37:35he's the main character of the movie.
- 37:37Just another. Generic, boring.
- 37:39I did like that they kind of smoked out.
- 37:41I thought that was kind of, you know, clever.
- 37:42I thought you'd like that. I got a little traces of the
- 37:45Mutara Nebula. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 37:49Yeah, not nearly as interesting. No, not shot at, no nothing.
- 37:52A lot of CG at this point, and what I liked about the first
- 37:54movie I never really got too much of that CG gloss.
- 37:58No, just I noticed in the deck of cards with CG, Yeah, yeah,
- 38:02those weren't real. Cards.
- 38:03No, of course not. No, no.
- 38:04You can't deal cards properly, no.
- 38:06You can't deal them like. That not like that.
- 38:08Not like that. Yeah, was even a real hand.
- 38:11And finally, they end up in this big, big glorious sinkhole
- 38:15scene, also known as a cave. It's a cave.
- 38:17Well, I mean, to me a cave has a roof.
- 38:21Like, you're in The Cave. OK, I got this.
- 38:23If you look up, you would see clouds and you would see the
- 38:26sky. So that tells me it's not a
- 38:27cave. It's like Oblivion.
- 38:29If you recall, that went down into the sinkhole, I guess.
- 38:32Yeah. A cave, Yeah.
- 38:33A cavern which is just long for cave, right?
- 38:35Is that what that is? Is there a difference between
- 38:37cave and cavern? That's what I want to know.
- 38:40What's fascinating, I don't think I've really put those two
- 38:42things together. But this is a big scene for you.
- 38:44You you like this scene? No, I hate this scene.
- 38:46Sorry I got mixed up here. This is the heartfelt
- 38:48conversation. In any other movie would be a
- 38:51scene that I gravitated towards. And in this movie, she's so
- 38:54terrible that I feel nothing. I think Bond is OK, but he's
- 38:58not. He's got nothing to work with.
- 38:59This is a scene that for a person that is you alluded to
- 39:02last week, I love dialogue like this would be a scene for you,
- 39:05for me. And it's so flat, I find because
- 39:09again, the performance is so thin and we haven't really lived
- 39:12with that character enough to really feel her pain.
- 39:16But it's just that she sucks so bad.
- 39:18She's terrible and it ruins the scene as a result.
- 39:21I'm starting to think you're not a big fan of Olga's.
- 39:23Performance here not my favorite.
- 39:26That is definitely the vibe I'm getting.
- 39:29I want to share something with you that you probably may or may
- 39:32not know, but water and oil don't mix.
- 39:34Strawberry fields with oils don't work out too well.
- 39:37And oil don't work out. Don't work out well.
- 39:39In the Segway. We get her.
- 39:41Yeah. Did you recognize who that was?
- 39:43Covered in oil? Yeah.
- 39:44No. Like, did did you think that
- 39:46that was her? Not say it later, but yeah.
- 39:48Not instantly, no, but pretty quick.
- 39:51Who else would it be? Yeah, I guess because he slept
- 39:53with her. Yes, he did.
- 39:54He did. Lucky man.
- 39:55Well, you know, maybe it was bad.
- 39:57Had a good run. But she's dead and Bond is
- 40:01fired. Loses his gun.
- 40:03He's done, mission's over, you're off the case.
- 40:06What happens 5 seconds later? He escapes from the the
- 40:10handcuffs from the guards that are taking him into the.
- 40:12Elevator, They underestimated him.
- 40:14Yeah, clearly, yeah. Why are people underestimated?
- 40:18But you do get Olga to the rescue.
- 40:20She picks him up in her little VW.
- 40:22Bug, right? Yeah, get in.
- 40:23Yeah, for the second time. And then they're off they go,
- 40:26off they go. Whatever.
- 40:28Into the sunset. And now the CIA is meeting with
- 40:32all the bad people, Bond and Felix having their one
- 40:35interaction in this movie at the bar.
- 40:38Oh, that's right. Yes.
- 40:39Because did you like this scene? No, I did not not like it.
- 40:44And it's just it's just propelling the the plot forward.
- 40:47It's just tying up that end of OK, well, Felix is one of the
- 40:51good guys. That's all this is doing.
- 40:52But we don't even know that because.
- 40:54What we do? At the end.
- 40:55Because he plays the same character in every movie.
- 40:57I've seen him more as bad guys, truthfully, but at the end when
- 41:00he meets up with Harbor again, and I'll say this about that,
- 41:04the OK the movie. Seems a little hot.
- 41:07Clearly plotting. You mentioned last week the plot
- 41:12not being confusing enough that you kind of figured out, but it
- 41:15also doesn't seem to matter. This is another one where I
- 41:18think it's a little bit more convoluted, but still doesn't
- 41:21seem to matter. The plotting of these movies
- 41:23don't seem to really matter. So you got Felix, you got
- 41:25Harbor. They're working with the other
- 41:27guys, but maybe not and a little bit with Bond, but not enough to
- 41:30give them 30 seconds head start. You could give them a 20 minute
- 41:33head start. Not everything has to be the
- 41:34last possible thing you say, right?
- 41:36Like so. 5 minutes would have the way.
- 41:38These angles are happening. I don't really care or know
- 41:41what's happening or who's on whose side, but it also doesn't
- 41:44seem to matter to the real story.
- 41:45Well, if that was supposed to be a moment, it did was not a
- 41:47moment. Yeah, but why have it then?
- 41:49It didn't seem to move the plot in any way.
- 41:52And I said it did, didn't it? Well, yeah, like it's got to
- 41:54keep moving, but like, I don't understand.
- 41:56You're making me eat my words. I just don't know the point of
- 41:59it. What is the CI as angle with
- 42:01relationship to bond itself? I literally think it just wants
- 42:04to tell us that Felix is one of the good guys.
- 42:06That's it, that's it. You're looking.
- 42:08You're reading way too much into it.
- 42:10Felix is a good guy. That's it.
- 42:13And then, yeah, we've got the bad guy do.
- 42:15You even know who the bad guy is.
- 42:16What's his name? It's Dominic Green.
- 42:20Yes, with an E on the end. That's right, That's A.
- 42:22Green space or something is his. I remember now, yeah.
- 42:26That's ironic because he's not. Yeah, that is ironic.
- 42:29Not that green. Yeah, yeah, I think they did it
- 42:31on. Purpose.
- 42:31Yes, it's pretty clever, but he has the scene now with the
- 42:35Maderos, the president. I mean, you know his name, of
- 42:38course. Wow.
- 42:39Good, Mr. Maderos. Not a good deal.
- 42:41The exchange, the money. Yeah.
- 42:43And then he's. Oh, actually, also they're.
- 42:46You're gonna have to buy all our utilities from us.
- 42:48That's double what we pay. And then the bad guy talks some
- 42:51story and threatens him about it, waking up with his balls in
- 42:53his mouth. Yeah, a lot of another ball.
- 42:55The balls, though, yeah, yeah. But I just thought this bad guy
- 42:59is supposed to be so threatening, but it's not a meek
- 43:01thing. I don't.
- 43:02I'm not saying that he needs to be 63 and like jacked up to be
- 43:07threatening, but he is so bland a performer that his threats are
- 43:11just so generic to me that I'm like, I don't buy the threat
- 43:15that he poses to the president. You're not signing.
- 43:18I would probably not sign. Well, but he says.
- 43:20You know who I work for? But he stands it with this dead
- 43:23stare. Like, I don't know, I hate this
- 43:24guy. I hate this.
- 43:25Villain. You're not supposed to like him.
- 43:26No, but like I hate the performance 2.
- 43:28Performances now in this movie that you don't like and that's
- 43:31going to be a problematic. Your final thoughts are not
- 43:33going to be pretty when it comes to performance.
- 43:36No, no, we do have a. Lot of fire.
- 43:38Yeah, like this sort of wrapping up, this is the.
- 43:40Last, this is what I remember from this is your.
- 43:42Last 1015 talk to. Me, I would say ultimately,
- 43:45compared to the rest of the movie, this is edited maybe a
- 43:48little bit better. OK, maybe because there's just
- 43:50always flames. So it's just cutting from flames
- 43:54to flames, but doesn't feel as jarring.
- 43:56Now I don't throw the word jarring around lightly.
- 43:58No, no, that's probably why I remember it.
- 44:01Sure. So I thought it was shot pretty
- 44:04well and I agree with you in that it is, I think the the best
- 44:07executed action sequence in the whole movie.
- 44:09Yes, I think the flames go a long way, the building kind of
- 44:12collapsing, not unlike what happened at the end of the last
- 44:15movie. With the water, we have the
- 44:18other. Yeah, kind of.
- 44:19It's kind of opposite where we don't like any of the chase
- 44:21scenes and that's a problem. Yeah, that's a problem.
- 44:25Yeah, but the aesthetic I thought was good and I do enjoy
- 44:29ultimately what happens to Dominic by him kind of escaping
- 44:33out into the desert, Bond sort of clearly driving him further
- 44:37or picking him up at some point and driving him out or
- 44:39something. Yeah, he doesn't want to kill
- 44:40anymore. He's done with that for now.
- 44:42Gives him some motor oil. That's right.
- 44:43You're going to want to drink this because it would kill you I
- 44:46guess. Yeah, basically take away the
- 44:47supper. You'll be so dehydrated, so
- 44:50dehydrated that you would need to try and quench it and this is
- 44:54all that you would have. So I like that.
- 44:57Now my question is, do you think it was 10W30 or 10W40 or 5W30?
- 45:02Easily the 5W30. I can't even believe you asked
- 45:05me that question. I just I didn't know if you do
- 45:07your viscosities, but clearly you do because you own a car.
- 45:10Don't you worry. We have now what is presumably
- 45:22the culmination of the Vesper storyline now.
- 45:26This is this is all ultimately about revenge.
- 45:28If we if he didn't figure it out, but.
- 45:30Yeah, again, I don't think the movie leans enough into it, but
- 45:32that's the through line. That's the character, at least
- 45:34the book ending of the story. Is that his whole attitude, the
- 45:37whole thing is revenge. I don't think the movie does a
- 45:40good enough job to really solidify the I think they say it
- 45:44a lot. I think we talked about this
- 45:45last week too. They say things a lot like we're
- 45:47the greatest man I ever knew, but there isn't a lot in between
- 45:50to sort of solidify that. They never went out for chicken.
- 45:53And that's kind of where I'm at with this, where she says, you
- 45:58know, Bond, you'll have to get over it, but I don't.
- 46:01See the advice. That's good advice.
- 46:02It's not that he's wrestling with it, Yes.
- 46:04So it feels more of an add on than a coherent kind of through
- 46:08line of the story. Oh, are we on a tack on
- 46:11situation? It feels a little tacked on now
- 46:13where you but you're going to do that.
- 46:15And if you remember the first time or even in this in this
- 46:17other time, did you clock that revenge thing?
- 46:20Because I don't I don't know that it's fully represented and
- 46:22maybe it's just I missed it, but I think the movie doesn't set it
- 46:26up throughout to say that. This is a followed thread.
- 46:29It pains me to say this. Believe me, you're right.
- 46:32You're right. I completely forgot about this
- 46:34last five minutes. OK.
- 46:36Like, Oh yeah, we're still dealing with that.
- 46:38Sure. I forgot about the ex-boyfriend.
- 46:41We have to tie it all up. I was going to go so but tie
- 46:43makes it more sense to tie. I prefer to crochet, but having
- 46:48said that I love the fact that the agent with this new guy with
- 46:51the ex boyfriends Canadian. Canadian.
- 46:53Yeah, love that. Yeah, and he turns out he's the
- 46:56the bad guy. A bad guy.
- 46:58He's got 2 necklaces. It seems he's a collector.
- 47:01He does collect. He does collect necklaces.
- 47:03It's a little neck lie. I think it's a plural for
- 47:05necklaces. Neck lie.
- 47:07It's a little trite to me that it's like, I've got one too.
- 47:09And like, that's the book. That's good.
- 47:13But yeah, this movie ends on a high note.
- 47:15I don't. Think you need it and he doesn't
- 47:16kill him which I thought. He was.
- 47:17No, that really goes against the Daniel Craig, James Bond
- 47:20character. So maybe he's growing.
- 47:22Yeah, there's growth there. Absolutely.
- 47:24He's getting closure. He's getting out of that mine
- 47:26prison. That's right.
- 47:27Which Olga's, you know. Great advice, Olga.
- 47:30And I guess the Langley people, it's like the that American
- 47:32story, I guess kind of wraps up the movie, ends in a way that
- 47:36doesn't. That was satisfied.
- 47:38But I do like the last line where M is sort of like, we need
- 47:42you back or something like that. Of course, like, you're the one
- 47:44that fired him like, 20 minutes ago.
- 47:45So like, get over yourselves. Yeah.
- 47:47But he says, you know, I never left and sort of walks away.
- 47:50Cool. And that's a pretty cool lesson.
- 47:51Yeah, he's just committed. Yeah, he's committed.
- 47:53That's his only job. It's it's his identity.
- 47:56Sure that everybody knows. Yeah.
- 47:58So I thought All in all, I think the movie is not good.
- 48:02Not good, not good. It's not terrible, it's not bad,
- 48:04but it's really not good. And I felt like a real big dip
- 48:07personally, from what I had experienced in the last movie,
- 48:11what I thought, oh, I've been missing this thing because I
- 48:14haven't watched any of them before.
- 48:15I was afraid of that of of you being disappointed.
- 48:17Like I don't really need to see anymore.
- 48:20I'm I'm willing to as obviously with the podcast.
- 48:22How did I feel after Halloween 2?
- 48:24Similar, OK. I think, like I don't think you
- 48:27were you were like, I'm good now and that's why I thought what
- 48:30was clever and and you obviously didn't like the movie.
- 48:32But us just from an idea point saying we've told that story.
- 48:37We need to do something else because a third movie about Lori
- 48:41in a hospital or not in a hospital, right, Like no one
- 48:43needs to deal with that right now.
- 48:44And I kind of feel about this. I don't care about Vesper.
- 48:47I barely care about M because that's.
- 48:49That's mean. Yeah, person.
- 48:50No relationship there. They haven't expanded the
- 48:53relationship with Felix. If he's like, I don't know what
- 48:56the next one is, but everything I just saw in this movie doesn't
- 48:59make it interesting to see what's next.
- 49:01Well, I, you know, Phil, I don't know.
- 49:02I might pause. I don't know, but I'm not going
- 49:05to never know. You never know, you know, we'll
- 49:07see because there's to do five straight is I have to take a
- 49:10break at some point because if you had done all 5 of Halloween
- 49:13at once, you wouldn't be here today.
- 49:16You wouldn't be here today. So your final thoughts of, if I
- 49:18can let let me guess, poor performances generally speaking
- 49:22outside of Daniel Craig? Yeah, but I I thought he wasn't
- 49:25very good either. Because of the script.
- 49:27Just generally, I don't think that you just didn't have much
- 49:29to do. OK.
- 49:30I liked his dynamic in the last one.
- 49:32I thought he had a little clever kind of glint in his eye.
- 49:35There's a little humor in there. Did.
- 49:36Keep his shirt on I believe. Sure.
- 49:38I just, there was nothing about the character in this that felt
- 49:40interesting and I thought there was more of interest in the last
- 49:43one. OK, I just think the movie just
- 49:45falls flat on everything it's trying to do and it doesn't open
- 49:48any new doors after the last one.
- 49:50But that's me. Where are you at with this one?
- 49:52Having seen it now again. I'm disappointed.
- 49:55I wish it was a better movie because it feels like it should
- 49:59have been at least as good. I would say with Casino Royale,
- 50:02you have shoes roughly the size, say 9 1/2, maybe 10.
- 50:08All right, So you have shoes that are relatively big to fill
- 50:12this shoe size of Quantum of Solace.
- 50:14We're coming in at a, you know, size 7.
- 50:16And a half. OK, unlike the IMDb score.
- 50:19Yeah, more like A5 I guess. It's yeah, it did go down.
- 50:23I didn't actually check it out. I didn't want to know.
- 50:26But ultimately I'll stick with what I said in the beginning.
- 50:29I think this actually is a pretty good movie if it's edited
- 50:32differently. Wow, OK, it's putting a lot of
- 50:34weight on the editing. I am, because if you can at
- 50:37least get the action sequences to be engaging and entertaining,
- 50:42and this is an action movie, if you've done that part right,
- 50:45Yeah. Yeah, You can have a few flaws
- 50:46here and there. Sure.
- 50:47And the other. One going for those chases,
- 50:49whatever, right? Yeah.
- 50:50Yeah, but if you can't get that right, like like a scary movie,
- 50:53if you can't get the the kills right.
- 50:55There you go. Yeah.
- 50:56It's good. You're going to fall flat and
- 50:57this movie doesn't do anything else well, unfortunately.
- 51:00But we'll probably step away and then move on to something.
- 51:03But thanks for being a good sport.
- 51:05It's my pleasure. It's one of the beauties of this
- 51:07project is being able to see some movies that I've never I
- 51:09would never have seen before. Yeah.
- 51:11And sometimes it's a it's a win and other times it's obviously
- 51:14not. But I like the opportunity.
- 51:16Wonderful. Yeah.
- 51:18So that's it, folks. Thanks for joining.
- 51:19We do appreciate it. Dave and I are sometimes like
- 51:22oil and water, but unlike this movie, we blend those a little
- 51:25bit better than this disaster of a movie and raise five stars in
- 51:31your pod catcher of choice. Subscribe so you never miss an
- 51:33episode. And of course, share the podcast
- 51:35with everybody you know. And we'll see you next week.
- 51:39I'm happy. With four stars.
- 51:40Yeah, 3 1/2, it's fine. I settle, I settle, you settle
- 51:43all around. My wife says she settled yes,
- 51:46but. Listeners don't settle.
- 51:47You don't settle. Five stars.
- 51:49Goodnight, Goodnight. Visit our Facebook web page.
- 51:52You know, it hasn't been updated since April 28th, but please go
- 51:56there and find nothing. Yeah, yeah, fine.
- 52:00Mr. Mcgorium, check. The Archives.
- 52:02Yeah, that's. A really good episode.
