- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Joseph of Cupertino, September 18 in the year of our Lord 2026. A note on the rubrics. In the older Missal, the September Ember Days were kept on the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday following September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. They also have the rank of greater but not privileged faria.
- 0:43Therefore, this year in our series following the pre-nineteen fifty five missile, all three September ember days are only commemorated with the last gospel of the prologue of John being replaced by the ember days gospel. In the 1960 rubrics, unlike the other three sets of ember days, the September ember days were changed to occur after the third Sunday within the month of September. They were also raised in relative rank to second class, meaning they almost always occur instead of being commemorated. This year, 2026, is one in which the September ember days of the 1962 missile occur the week following what they would have been before the 1960 rubric change, meaning next week. Of today's saint, Dom Gaspar Lefebvre writes the following, A humble son of Saint Francis whose stigmata we honored yesterday, Saint Joseph also glorifies the cross of Jesus, which the liturgy exalted a few days ago, September 14.
- 2:02Like the seraphic patriarch, he strove to remain attached to the cross by absolute poverty, heroic obedience, and virginal purity. Such was his spirit of sacrifice and prayer that he accepted with holy patience and great serenity, outrages, reproaches, and all sorts of injuries. Wherefore God who exalts the humble caused him to pass from the rank of brother to that of clerk and to be made a priest. He wrought such miracles that he implored heaven to withdraw from him the remarkable powers with which he was endowed. He died a holy death at Alsimo in the year of our Lord 1663.
- 3:03In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. The wisdom that is worth having is the love of God. When she reveals herself face to face, men come to love her, seeing her beauty and recognizing her wondrous power.
- 3:32Oh, lord of hosts, how I love thy dwelling place. For the courts of the Lord's house, my soul faints with longing. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. The wisdom that is worth having is the love of God.
- 4:03When she reveals herself face to face, men come to love her, seeing her beauty and recognizing her wondrous power. The Collect. Let us pray. O God, under whose providence thy only begotten son was lifted up above the earth so that he might draw all things to himself, accomplish thy gracious purpose in us, and let the merits and example of thy seraphic confessor, Joseph, help us to rise above all earthly desires and make our way into the presence of him who is God living and reigning with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:02A commemoration of Ember Friday in September. We beseech thee, O Almighty God. Grant that as year by year we devoutly keep these sacred fasts. We may please thee both in body and mind through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:35A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, if I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but have not charity, I am a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but have not charity, I am nothing. If I give away all I have and if I deliver my body to be burned but have not charity, it goes for nothing. Charity is patient, is kind.
- 6:35Charity feels no envy. Charity is never perverse or proud, never insolent, does not claim its rights, cannot be provoked, does not brood over an injury, takes no pleasure in wrongdoing but rejoices at the victory of truth. Charity sustains, believes, hopes, endures to the last. The time will come when we shall outgrow prophecy, when speaking with tongues will come to an end, when knowledge will be swept away, but charity shall never fall away. The gradual, with abundant blessing, thou hast met him on his way, hast set a jeweled crown, Lord, on his head.
- 7:44He prayed for life, and thou hast granted him life unfailing till the end of time. Alleluia. Alleluia. God looked upon him with an eye of favor, lifted him up from his low estate, and raised his head high. Alleluia.
- 8:11A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus once more spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables. Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven. There was once a king who held a marriage feast for his son and sent out his servants with a summons to all those whom he had invited to the wedding. But they would not come.
- 8:44Then he sent other servants with a fresh summons bidding them tell those who had been invited, by this I have prepared my feast. The oxen have been killed and the fatlings. All is ready now. Come to the wedding. But still they paid no heed and went off on other errands, one to his farm in the country and another to his trading.
- 9:17And the rest laid hands upon his servants and insulted and killed them. The king fell into a rage when he heard of it and sent out his troops to put those murderers to death and burn their city. After this he said to his servants, here is the marriage feast already and those who had been invited have proved unworthy of it. You must go out to the street corners and invite all whom you find there to the wedding. And his servants went out into the streets where they mustered all they could find.
- 10:05Rogues and honest men together. And so the wedding had its full tale of guests. But when the king came in to look at the company, he saw a man there who had no wedding garment on. My friend, he said, how didst thou come to be here without a wedding garment? Whereupon he made no reply.
- 10:34And the king said to his servants, bind him hand and foot and cast him out into the darkness where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Many are called, but few are chosen. The offertory. I, when they troubled me thus, went clad in sackcloth and humbled my pride with fasting and all my prayer hid itself in my own bosom. The secret.
- 11:14We offer sacrificial gifts in praise of thee, oh Lord, and in memory of thy saints, trusting that by them we may be delivered from ills both present and to come. A commemoration of Ember Friday in September. May the gift of our fasting we beseech you, oh Lord, be acceptable to you and by its purifying power make us worthy of your grace and bring us to the eternal bliss you have promised us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface.
- 12:11Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting god. Through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
- 12:42We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 13:18The communion. See how friendless I am and how distressed. But thy help, oh God, sustains me. I will sing in praise of God's name. Exalt him with all my homage.
- 13:38The post communion. Let us pray. Refreshed with food and drink from on high, we humbly beg thee, our God, that we may be guarded by the prayers of him in memory of whom we have received this sacrament. A commemoration of Ember Friday in September. We thank thee, Almighty God, for the gifts we have received and beseech thee to grant us yet greater benefits through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 14:24Amen. The Last Gospel. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time one of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. So he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at table.
- 14:48And there was then a sinful woman in the city who, hearing that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought a pot of ointment with her and took her place behind him at his feet, weeping. Then she began washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair, kissing his feet, and anointing them with the ointment. His host, the pharisee, saw it and thought to himself, if this man were a prophet, he would know who this woman is that is touching him. And what kind of woman? A sinner.
- 15:37But Jesus answered him thus, Simon, I have a word for thy hearing. Tell it me, master, he said. There was a creditor who had two debtors. One owed him 500 pieces of silver. The other 50.
- 16:00They had no means of paying him and he gave them both their discharge. And now tell me which of them loves him the more. I suppose, Simon answered, that it is the one who had the greater debt discharged. And he said, thou hast judged rightly. Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon, dost thou see this woman?
- 16:36I came into thy house, and thou gavest me no water for my feet. She has washed my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. Thou gavest me no kiss of greeting. She has never ceased to kiss my feet since I entered. Thou didst not pour oil on my head.
- 17:01She has anointed my feet and with ointment. Ointment. And so I tell thee, if great sins have been forgiven her, she has also greatly loved. He loves little who has little forgiven him. Then he said to her, thy sins are forgiven.
- 17:30And his fellow guests thereupon thought to themselves, who is this? That he even forgives sins. But he told the woman, thy faith has saved thee. Go in peace. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 17:59Amen. Saint Joseph of Cupertino, pray for us.
