- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm me. I'm never gonna be anyone else. Might as
- 0:02Speaker 1: well hype myself up in the best way that I can't.
- 0:05Speaker 1: If I can't push myself to positive, just keep it
- 0:08Speaker 1: to neutral. I'm not feeling it. I don't force it.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm just like, Okay, here I am.

- 1:57Speaker 2: hurdling today. I am sitting down with Jess Simms.
- 2:07Speaker 3: She is a Peloton instructor you know, in love but
- 2:11Speaker 3: so much more, a dear friend of mine and face
- 2:15Speaker 3: on ESPN just Sims.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Welcome back to Hurdle.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm excited to be here with you as always, but
- 2:21Speaker 1: this space is incredible, the lighting is amazing, and I'm
- 2:25Speaker 1: excited to chat with you.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm excited to chat with you.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I know I just asked you how you're doing, but
- 2:30Speaker 3: I like to actually level set, Jess Sims, how are
- 2:33Speaker 3: we doing?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Really? Think about it, Persa arrive in the space. I
- 2:39Speaker 2: am doing really well right now.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It's the summer, which is my slower I'm using air
- 2:46Speaker 1: quotes because I'm no longer the person that says, oh yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 1: after this, you know, stint of travel or this stint
- 2:52Speaker 1: of business, it'll be slower. I don't subscribe to that
- 2:56Speaker 1: anymore because I'm like, oh, yeah, I'll be fine after this. Like, no,
- 3:00Speaker 1: there's always something, So this is slower comparatively speaking, but
- 3:04Speaker 1: who knows. Things can change week to week. But my
- 3:06Speaker 1: heart is full. I'm feeling like I can slow down
- 3:11Speaker 1: a little bit personally, and it feels really good.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I love to hear that.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the last few years have been an
- 3:17Speaker 3: interesting time for you, to say the least, so much
- 3:21Speaker 3: going on, both personally and professionally. On the professional note,
- 3:26Speaker 3: kicking things off by joining the team at college game day,
- 3:29Speaker 3: which feels like just yesterday, but it's not just yesterday anymore, four.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Years gone, Like this fall will be my fifty year
- 3:37Speaker 1: at ESPN, which blows my mind.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, like it.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Makes it makes no sense because I'm like, oh hey, yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 1: like I'm so excited I'm starting this new job at ESPN.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I'm like, wait, I'm not the new girl anymore. You're not,
- 3:46Speaker 2: And how does that feel for you?
- 3:47Speaker 1: It feels good because I mean the people that I
- 3:50Speaker 1: work with, especially at game day specifically, are like family.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So when people are always like, what's game Day like,
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm like, it's a traveling circus with your family members.
- 3:58Speaker 1: There's so many laughs. There's so many crazy things that
- 4:01Speaker 1: happened last minute, as you could imagine how much chaos
- 4:04Speaker 1: could ensue in a three hour long outdoor live broadcast
- 4:09Speaker 1: at a college that we figure out where we're going
- 4:11Speaker 1: to the Sunday before sometimes even I think one time
- 4:15Speaker 1: it was Monday morning last year. So it's wild and
- 4:17Speaker 1: it's beautiful, and it's very exciting because I've expanded my
- 4:21Speaker 1: role at ESPN. So I did men's college basketball doing
- 4:24Speaker 1: sideline for two years. Last year I did women's basketball,
- 4:26Speaker 1: which was incredible, so I got to go all the
- 4:28Speaker 1: way through Final four in the champ and then also
- 4:31Speaker 1: last year I added Little League World Series, which I'll
- 4:33Speaker 1: be doing again at the end of August. And then
- 4:36Speaker 1: just what two weeks ago, I was in Minneapolis for
- 4:39Speaker 1: special Olympics. So it's been incredible.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Peaching the pit of this for you, especially pertaining to
- 4:48Speaker 3: the expansion of your role at ESPN, because you step
- 4:52Speaker 3: in and you do one thing, and then you do
- 4:54Speaker 3: something else, and then you do something else, and it's
- 4:56Speaker 3: a constant learning and growing experience, but not one that
- 4:59Speaker 3: doesn't come with challenge.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Absolutely well.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Gosh, it was Carol Dweck, author of Mindset, that says
- 5:06Speaker 1: becoming is better than being, and I really love that,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and I'll say that again because I want to make
- 5:12Speaker 1: sure that I even said it right. Becoming is better
- 5:14Speaker 1: than being because there's something about learning that excites me.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And so while it is amazing that I have, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 1: my team that I've been with for a game day
- 5:24Speaker 1: for four years, it's so exciting to also have a
- 5:27Speaker 1: new team with a new role and new sport and
- 5:30Speaker 1: new players and new coaches because it gives me a
- 5:33Speaker 1: chance to share stories, which is my favorite part about
- 5:36Speaker 1: the job, is storytelling and highlighting people, athletes and everyone
- 5:40Speaker 1: else that has a great story to tell, because that's
- 5:42Speaker 1: the best part of being a human being. So I
- 5:44Speaker 1: would say yeah, So I would say, gosh, you said,
- 5:47Speaker 1: Peach and Pit, it's I mean everything in life, we're
- 5:50Speaker 1: already getting very very deep. I'm already like, wait a minute,
- 5:52Speaker 1: everything in life has a peach and a pit, like everything,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and the key is just to keep going, keep learning,
- 5:57Speaker 1: keep growing, and that's it.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:59Speaker 3: I mean, it's no surprise is that you, as a
- 6:02Speaker 3: former principal and I would say still current teacher at Peloton,
- 6:08Speaker 3: love to learn, yes, And so to be in this
- 6:11Speaker 3: place now where you are constantly learning, it's truly an opportunity,
- 6:17Speaker 3: one that you don't take for granted, I know, and
- 6:20Speaker 3: also one that is continuing to evolve, most recently with
- 6:24Speaker 3: your newest stint on first time.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I know I got to host for
- 6:29Speaker 2: the first time. Tell me about it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I mean, when I got the text message from the
- 6:33Speaker 1: producer saying, hey, do you want to come in and
- 6:35Speaker 1: sub for first take? I thought, I was like, there's
- 6:37Speaker 1: no way, There's like it's impossible, because it's something that
- 6:42Speaker 1: I've always wanted to do, especially in the last couple
- 6:44Speaker 1: of years as you're learning certain things that you love
- 6:46Speaker 1: about the different roles and certain things where you're like, hmm,
- 6:48Speaker 1: I wish that you know, I could have this type
- 6:50Speaker 1: of role hosting is always something that I love because
- 6:53Speaker 1: I love talking to people. I love having longer conversation,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and specifically on first take debate, like who doesn't love
- 6:59Speaker 1: a healthy debate, And so I was so excited, but
- 7:02Speaker 1: I also had a pit in my stomach because I'm nervous.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Dude, Debate on my couch is so much different than debates,
- 7:08Speaker 3: so different.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So different, It's a different muscle, and so like immediately
- 7:12Speaker 1: I'm just like, it's I've had this feeling several times
- 7:15Speaker 1: in my life where like my gut, my stomach, my
- 7:18Speaker 1: heart is like, you're doing this, and in my mind
- 7:20Speaker 1: is like, no, you can't do this.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You don't have any experience doing X and Y and Z.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Year and I've gotten really good at quieting the gremlin,
- 7:28Speaker 1: as we call it, that overthinker voice, and go more
- 7:32Speaker 1: by my gut in my heart.
- 7:34Speaker 3: And that is a skill that translates well beyond your career.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I know that it's something that you and I both
- 7:40Speaker 3: have talked about, we've worked on personally over the last
- 7:43Speaker 3: few years. Allowing yourself to lead based on feeling and
- 7:47Speaker 3: let go of what that heavy thinker energy is always
- 7:51Speaker 3: trying to get you to do.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yes, yes, oh, my gosh, because then the other I
- 7:55Speaker 1: think my second thought was ironically I was already off
- 7:58Speaker 1: from Peloton, so it worked perfectly for my schedule because
- 8:01Speaker 1: it is a longer day. The show was ten to noon,
- 8:05Speaker 1: and so I got there six forty five ish. But
- 8:10Speaker 1: I was already off on Thursday, when I normally teach,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and I had plans to go upstate to just like
- 8:15Speaker 1: slow down, to enjoy life. And so immediately my gremlin
- 8:18Speaker 1: was like, no, you can't do this. You can't say
- 8:20Speaker 1: yes to another work project, like you said you wanted
- 8:22Speaker 1: to do this, and I was like, wait a minute,
- 8:24Speaker 1: but I can do that after like I went upstate,
- 8:27Speaker 1: after you know, the session on Friday. But to your
- 8:30Speaker 1: point is it's taken practice to understand that that's not
- 8:33Speaker 1: how I truly feel. It's just like my gremlin trying
- 8:35Speaker 1: to protect me and trying to keep me small. And
- 8:37Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, hey girl, I appreciate that. Yes, I
- 8:40Speaker 1: did say I wanted to relax and all that, but
- 8:41Speaker 1: this is also something that I truly want to do
- 8:43Speaker 1: because it's such a great opportunity.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's so challenging when those thoughts creep in
- 8:49Speaker 3: to get them to quiet down. There's so many people
- 8:51Speaker 3: listening to this right now that are probably like, Oh,
- 8:53Speaker 3: I have a gremlin. I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 8:56Speaker 3: How did you get to a place where you were
- 8:58Speaker 3: better at commune, unicating with that at acknowledging that it's
- 9:02Speaker 3: simply just a thought, and that you get to decide
- 9:05Speaker 3: how you respond to that thought.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Well, it's very funny what you just said. It's two
- 9:09Speaker 2: different parts.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So recognizing that there is a gremlin, it's step one,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and I've been good at that. I would say for
- 9:14Speaker 1: a while, like I'm like, all right, girl, I got this.
- 9:15Speaker 1: You know this inner voice that's like challenging everything that
- 9:18Speaker 1: feels good in my soul.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, so what's going on there?
- 9:21Speaker 1: But the second part to what you just said is
- 9:24Speaker 1: not allowing that to dictate how you move. And so
- 9:28Speaker 1: that's the kind of I think I recently had an
- 9:30Speaker 1: unlock with my life coach about that, because it's one
- 9:33Speaker 1: thing to acknowledge that, hey, this exists, but then the
- 9:36Speaker 1: second part is like, Okay, you exist. I don't have
- 9:39Speaker 1: to turn the volume up on you. I can turn
- 9:40Speaker 1: the volume up on my response to this reaction to
- 9:43Speaker 1: the experience the reaction is that is that gremlin, and
- 9:47Speaker 1: I am the response. So you can't ever help the reaction,
- 9:50Speaker 1: but you can't quiet that down and then empower your voice,
- 9:54Speaker 1: your response to the situation.
- 9:56Speaker 2: There we go, So we're empowering our responses.
- 9:58Speaker 1: We have to girl, it can be tough.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It's tough out there.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It is life's hard.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Get a helmet, Get a helmet, And there's just so
- 10:04Speaker 3: much that you want to do. I mean when I
- 10:07Speaker 3: think just sims, I know, we listed like a couple
- 10:10Speaker 3: of the things that you have your hands in, but
- 10:12Speaker 3: girl has more jobs than she knows what to do with.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, and it's yeah I do, But like
- 10:18Speaker 1: they don't all feel like jobs. They feel like partnerships
- 10:22Speaker 1: and just all these things that help me stay aligned
- 10:25Speaker 1: with my mission, you know. And I think that that's
- 10:28Speaker 1: kind of been my my north star is always asking
- 10:31Speaker 1: myself because I constantly ask myself, now, at what cost?
- 10:34Speaker 1: So when I say yes to something, at what costs?
- 10:36Speaker 1: Is it at you know, the expense of my sleep,
- 10:38Speaker 1: my time at home with my dogs, which you know
- 10:40Speaker 1: how much I need in a door? Is it like?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Am I not gonna be able to work out because
- 10:46Speaker 1: of saying yes to this, like you always have to
- 10:47Speaker 1: think about the cost of making a decision. And sometimes
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's like okay, yeah, that makes sense, and other times it's.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Like no, Like yeah, I really appreciate you highlighting that
- 10:56Speaker 3: the things that you are choosing to partake in are
- 10:59Speaker 3: in direct alignment with your mission. Someone listening to this
- 11:02Speaker 3: also curious or maybe interested in articulating what it is
- 11:05Speaker 3: their mission is. Where does someone begin with that? And
- 11:09Speaker 3: for me, I'll give some context. It started with getting
- 11:12Speaker 3: really specific on my values. What about for you?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Wait, well, tell me more about your values.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I feel like once I was able to articulate my
- 11:21Speaker 3: values health, kindness, community, then I can use those values
- 11:27Speaker 3: to then further articulate what it is that my personal
- 11:30Speaker 3: mission is. My mission right now is to help empower
- 11:33Speaker 3: women to live healthier, happier, more motivated lives. Yeah, and
- 11:36Speaker 3: so I do that through both the people that I
- 11:39Speaker 3: like to surround myself with, the things that I choose
- 11:42Speaker 3: to partake in, and the content or the things that
- 11:45Speaker 3: I am then putting out into the universe. Right So
- 11:48Speaker 3: that is how I align with what my personal mission
- 11:50Speaker 3: is right now, and that still resonates with me. If
- 11:53Speaker 3: there becomes a point where that doesn't resonate with me,
- 11:55Speaker 3: which I can't imagine or envision that happening. But if
- 11:58Speaker 3: there does come a point where that happens, then I
- 12:00Speaker 3: take a step back. I look at my values and
- 12:02Speaker 3: I say, maybe it's time to rewrite the mission.
- 12:05Speaker 2: No.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I love that, and that's that's really important. And I
- 12:08Speaker 1: think that is something that's also important for people to
- 12:10Speaker 1: listen to and to understand, is that don't force your mission.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Like I feel like a lot of people are. They
- 12:15Speaker 1: hear us talk about ours and they're like wow, they're
- 12:17Speaker 1: so confident they're able to say their mission. I didn't
- 12:20Speaker 1: sit down and say, like, what is my north star?
- 12:24Speaker 1: It's kind of like it was like a slow realization
- 12:26Speaker 1: that came like again slowly, but then all at once.
- 12:28Speaker 1: It was like once I realized it, once I looked back,
- 12:30Speaker 1: because you know, life happens as it's moving forward, but
- 12:32Speaker 1: only makes sense when you look back. So me looking
- 12:35Speaker 1: back as a three year captain on the basketball team,
- 12:38Speaker 1: and like I was just thinking, I was like, where
- 12:40Speaker 1: do I even start going back? Because I could go
- 12:41Speaker 1: back all the way to preschool. I have a preschool
- 12:44Speaker 1: story about where my mission started. If I really got
- 12:45Speaker 1: back to oh, I'll tell you after. But for the
- 12:47Speaker 1: purpose of this right now, when I was a three
- 12:50Speaker 1: year basketball captain at Trinity College, not because I was
- 12:52Speaker 1: the best player on the team, but because I cared
- 12:54Speaker 1: so much about the team. If the our normal leading scorer,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you know, had a tough game, I'd be like, hey,
- 12:59Speaker 1: let's go to the gym before practice, Like I'll rebound
- 13:01Speaker 1: for you for an hour. I just cared about the
- 13:03Speaker 1: I just love the team, being part of something bigger
- 13:05Speaker 1: than myself. And then fifth grade teacher, third grade teacher,
- 13:09Speaker 1: you're the leader of a classroom, like you have your
- 13:11Speaker 1: own squad in your room. And then I was a
- 13:14Speaker 1: kindergarten teacher, and then I was an assistant principle or
- 13:16Speaker 1: obstrector assistant principal principle. The team just keeps getting bigger
- 13:20Speaker 1: and like, you know, and better. And again, I'm always
- 13:22Speaker 1: a part of a team. So that's always like when
- 13:24Speaker 1: I look back, I'm like, wow, my mission has always
- 13:26Speaker 1: been to uplift other people and help them live happier,
- 13:30Speaker 1: healthier lives. But I will also say, if I continue
- 13:33Speaker 1: going on, So I taught after I was the principal
- 13:36Speaker 1: in Harlem. I taught at two boutique studios in New
- 13:39Speaker 1: York City, and from that I learned some new things
- 13:44Speaker 1: because the feedback I would get in the buy feedback,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I mean, like DMS or just conversations in person, are
- 13:51Speaker 1: people saying like I feel seen by you. I feel
- 13:55Speaker 1: like you hold this high bar, this high expectation. But
- 13:57Speaker 1: you also meet me where I'm at and like hold
- 13:59Speaker 1: my hand and say like, all right, we got this,
- 14:01Speaker 1: Like you're not doing this by yourself. And that was
- 14:02Speaker 1: before I was doing the workout with people on Peloton,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and so that's even further the mission even more at Peloton,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I feel like by being myself, I've allowed other people
- 14:11Speaker 1: to be theirselves. And I think that that is the
- 14:14Speaker 1: most powerful thing you can do, is just live in
- 14:16Speaker 1: alignment with like how you are authentically. And I know
- 14:19Speaker 1: authenticity is such a buzzword now and all of that,
- 14:21Speaker 1: but at the root of it, it is very true.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Like when you're living a life true to yourself, that
- 14:26Speaker 1: feels like you get to do things instead of you
- 14:28Speaker 1: have to do things like I have to pay the bills,
- 14:30Speaker 1: so I have to do this job, and I have
- 14:31Speaker 1: to do this because I went to school for it.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I got my degree, I got my master's degree in education,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and although I'm not in the classroom, I'm still using
- 14:39Speaker 1: so much of that. So getting into transferable skills and
- 14:43Speaker 1: how Yeah, your path might change because different things come
- 14:45Speaker 1: on your path to disrupt it, but it's just putting
- 14:47Speaker 1: you on a new path and the skills. You have
- 14:49Speaker 1: to have faith that the skills that you've learned and
- 14:51Speaker 1: developed over time are going to continue to bring you success.
- 15:10Speaker 3: It's interesting because I hear you talk about being someone
- 15:12Speaker 3: who is such an energy dealer. Yes, I can relate
- 15:15Speaker 3: to that, yes, And also I know as a fellow
- 15:19Speaker 3: energy dealer it is quite often that you come into
- 15:23Speaker 3: contact with people who are energy drains who may not
- 15:27Speaker 3: appreciate you being an energy dealer, who may not share
- 15:30Speaker 3: your value for community and for coming together. When you
- 15:35Speaker 3: approach people that maybe fall into those categories, how do
- 15:39Speaker 3: you best navigate.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It for you?
- 15:40Speaker 1: Cool? I feel like there's levels to that, like because
- 15:43Speaker 1: it's easy to say, oh, have boundaries, but it's like yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 1: but if you're talking about your mom, it's a little
- 15:47Speaker 1: bit different than having boundaries with you know, people in
- 15:50Speaker 1: your DMS. You know, but there are boundaries at each
- 15:53Speaker 1: of those levels, and I feel like I've become really
- 15:56Speaker 1: good at them, at creating them and maintaining them because
- 16:00Speaker 1: I have to. If I do not, I cannot be myself.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And if I cannot be myself, then what am I doing?
- 16:07Speaker 1: So having difficult conversations because I've been saying lately a
- 16:10Speaker 1: lot having hard conversations is hard, but not having them
- 16:14Speaker 1: as harder. In my opinion, it might be awkward to
- 16:16Speaker 1: I keep on saying, Mom, it could be anyone in
- 16:18Speaker 1: your life that you want to have this difficult conversation with.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Of course, it's going to feel challenging, and you're gonna
- 16:22Speaker 1: have a pit in your stomach, you're gonna be sweating, whatever.
- 16:24Speaker 2: But you're going to be feeling so much freer.
- 16:27Speaker 1: On the other side, and hopefully it'll create a new
- 16:30Speaker 1: level of intimacy that you didn't even know before.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Because clarity gives you what you need even if it
- 16:36Speaker 3: doesn't give you what you want.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Oohoo, that was a bar.
- 16:41Speaker 2: We're doing it. Oh my god.
- 16:43Speaker 3: That say for you, Clarity gives you what you need
- 16:46Speaker 3: even if it doesn't give you what you want. And
- 16:49Speaker 3: I'll say this, you will be able to like you're saying,
- 16:54Speaker 3: move forward with a clearer conscience, even if you're like
- 16:58Speaker 3: in this little bit of a bummed place.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Well, but here's the thing. You just hit the nail
- 17:02Speaker 2: on the head because.
- 17:03Speaker 1: A serious truth, like serious, I don't know if anyone's
- 17:06Speaker 1: ready to really hear this. That's why a lot of
- 17:08Speaker 1: people don't have these difficult conversations, because they're not ready
- 17:11Speaker 1: for the clarity. They would rather live in the cloudy
- 17:13Speaker 1: because it's easier than having the conversation and like really
- 17:18Speaker 1: realizing how the other person is feeling and what their
- 17:21Speaker 1: stance is on their relationship, because it's just easier to
- 17:23Speaker 1: live in the gray.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I'm not done with the gray. No, I
- 17:26Speaker 2: dislike the gray extreme.
- 17:28Speaker 3: That's too sure. I like, let's keep things simple. Let's
- 17:31Speaker 3: keep things simple again. You are living anything but a
- 17:35Speaker 3: simple existence right now.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I mean I try to live as simply as possible.
- 17:41Speaker 3: So in this non busy season for you, and again
- 17:44Speaker 3: those air quotes there, what are the things that are
- 17:47Speaker 3: bringing you joy outside of the dogs? I know that
- 17:49Speaker 3: Upstate has a big place in your heart.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think the best thing that I've done
- 17:54Speaker 1: for myself in the last two years is purchasing a
- 17:57Speaker 1: home upstate because obviously living in New York City, we
- 18:02Speaker 1: love it, but it can also be heavy. And also
- 18:05Speaker 1: there's this kind of pressure when I'm in my apartment.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Like actually, two weeks ago, this is still still lingering.
- 18:10Speaker 1: On two weeks ago, I had one day off one
- 18:12Speaker 1: I taught on Sunday. I was off Monday. I forget why,
- 18:16Speaker 1: and then Tuesday, so I didn't want to go upstate.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I could have, but I said, you know what, I'm
- 18:22Speaker 1: going to stay in the apartment. And I came downstairs,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I made my coffee, and I was like, I need
- 18:27Speaker 1: new furniture. I'm going to rearrange this entire living room
- 18:30Speaker 1: and I bought everything.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no, everything.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Well, you've had that couch only five years.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Even I was thinking about the couch you bought when
- 18:42Speaker 3: you moved into the apartment.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Well that's so that one lasted like six months.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Oh oh no, that was a very expensive couch and no,
- 18:47Speaker 3: this one was more expensive.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Okay, because but let.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Me tell you this is very important to me. The
- 18:52Speaker 1: couch is the most important thing in a home. And
- 18:54Speaker 1: I will stand on that time. I was down, like
- 18:57Speaker 1: I before I even had my bed set up. I
- 18:58Speaker 1: had the couch picked up like I measured. I was like, okay,
- 19:01Speaker 1: because when I rearranged the room now instead of because
- 19:03Speaker 1: you know, the couch was in the middle of my
- 19:05Speaker 1: living room because it's like that awkward longer, I push
- 19:07Speaker 1: it up against the wall, so therefore I can have
- 19:09Speaker 1: it longer.
- 19:10Speaker 2: So if I want a bigger couch, like hello, did
- 19:13Speaker 2: you get rid of your dining table? So I moved it.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I'm like trying in the room.
- 19:18Speaker 1: And my best friend Jesse, as you know, lives with me,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and all I readid her room too. Oh yeah, measured it. Yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 1: new dresser and also upgraded her queen bed to king
- 19:27Speaker 1: sized bed. Because I don't want to talk about it,
- 19:28Speaker 1: but the dogs sleep with her. Yeah, it's even when
- 19:30Speaker 1: I'm home. Yeah, we won't talk about that right now, but.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Even when you're home.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Well, because listen, the only thing it's I have a
- 19:36Speaker 1: it's a two level apartment, but the only thing upstairs
- 19:37Speaker 1: is my bedroom. So my dogs are nosy and curious.
- 19:40Speaker 1: They like to be where all the action is. So
- 19:41Speaker 1: at least this is what I tell myself, so I
- 19:43Speaker 1: don't get my feelings hurt. But so Jesse and you
- 19:46Speaker 1: know the dogs are They're fifty and sixty pounds. They're
- 19:48Speaker 1: not small, and they also sprawl out. Yeah, so poor
- 19:51Speaker 1: Jesse's been sleeping on a queen beds. I was like,
- 19:53Speaker 1: let's get her a king sized bed. So yeah, oh yeah,
- 19:56Speaker 1: so all that's changed, rugs, coffee tables.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it works.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And so it's hard for me though, I'm like, how
- 20:04Speaker 1: do we get here? This is welcome to my brain.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I play a game. How did I get here?
- 20:08Speaker 2: This is I remember? I remember how we got here?
- 20:10Speaker 2: I remember too upstate. Yeah, that is why when I go.
- 20:14Speaker 1: When I go upstate, it is the day feels so
- 20:17Speaker 1: much longer. Like I get up, I make my coffee,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I'll go for a walk. I put a pool in.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So now I just sit outside and just.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Enjoy being being.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm not like pressed to get out my
- 20:32Speaker 1: laptop like I've been reading books. That's another thing. I've
- 20:34Speaker 1: read two books now. That just things that I haven't
- 20:39Speaker 1: been able to prioritize. I noticed how I didn't say
- 20:42Speaker 1: too busy for I just haven't been able to prioritize it.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm able to do that when I'm upstate. So that
- 20:46Speaker 1: has been such a key thing. Because other people are like,
- 20:48Speaker 1: oh my gosh, you work so much, you need to vacation.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I'm like, the last thing I want to do right
- 20:52Speaker 1: now is get on an airplane. It's like, I just
- 20:54Speaker 1: do it so much for work, and so I want
- 20:55Speaker 1: to be at home. I want to be with the dogs.
- 20:57Speaker 1: And so the saying I work really hard to give
- 20:59Speaker 1: my dog's backyard is very true.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Very very true.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I appreciate the very intentional distinctions you make when you
- 21:08Speaker 3: talk about your time for yourself and also just the
- 21:12Speaker 3: way that you speak to yourself. And I think what
- 21:15Speaker 3: is important to highlight is that it is exemplary of
- 21:20Speaker 3: you being intentional about slowing down. By slowing down, you're
- 21:27Speaker 3: consciously speaking to yourself differently. Talk to me about getting
- 21:31Speaker 3: to a place where you understood the benefit to that,
- 21:35Speaker 3: and also just a little bit about the way that
- 21:38Speaker 3: you speak to yourself, about the evolution of understanding how
- 21:42Speaker 3: much power the words that you speak to yourself, even
- 21:45Speaker 3: when they may not be out loud, really have.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Well, that goes way back. Yeah, so like way back.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Oh, this is actually a perfect See everything comes back around.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I told you this could go back to pre k Okay,
- 21:58Speaker 1: I'm ready, so two things about pre K. My little
- 22:02Speaker 1: sister sent me. But when she was cleaning out my parents'
- 22:05Speaker 1: house years ago. The report card that had like the
- 22:08Speaker 1: cursive and you know, checkbox and or needs improvement as satisfactory. Anyways,
- 22:13Speaker 1: it said puts lots of pressure on self. So that's
- 22:17Speaker 1: one in pre K I was four years old, sweetie.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And then the second thing, Oh my god, photos of
- 22:23Speaker 1: little sims. It's no, we're not none. The world's not
- 22:26Speaker 1: ready for that. Then I will never forget. In sixth grade,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I came home from middle school. It's so I grew
- 22:32Speaker 1: up in PEBD, so there were eight elementary schools that
- 22:34Speaker 1: funneled into one middle school in the one town, one
- 22:37Speaker 1: city Pevt's technically a city, so it was all the
- 22:40Speaker 1: schools merging together for the first time. And so I
- 22:43Speaker 1: came home and I was like, mom, you'll never guess
- 22:45Speaker 1: who's in my class. And she's like who? And I
- 22:47Speaker 1: named this kid and I said, do you remember him
- 22:50Speaker 1: from preschool? He was such a cry baby. And my
- 22:53Speaker 1: mom was like, you mean blank, blank? Who was your
- 22:57Speaker 1: best friend?
- 22:58Speaker 2: I said. I looked at her with like this discussed.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I was like, what do you mean my best friend?
- 23:01Speaker 1: Mom? He was such a cry baby. Like all he did.
- 23:03Speaker 1: He would cry all the time, and his mom was
- 23:05Speaker 1: trying to like bring him the teacher had. My mom goes, Jess,
- 23:08Speaker 1: that was your best friend. You used to go over
- 23:09Speaker 1: to his mom and take his hand and bring him
- 23:11Speaker 1: over to the rug to sit with you, to play
- 23:13Speaker 1: with your toys. And that just like blew my mind
- 23:19Speaker 1: because I'm like, I didn't realize memories are distorted obviously,
- 23:25Speaker 1: as we know, but how I remembered him versus what
- 23:28Speaker 1: the reality was, I was like, oh my gosh, But
- 23:30Speaker 1: it makes sense because I have something inside of me
- 23:32Speaker 1: where I've always been like a mediator.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I've always I'm very observant.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I walk into a room and it's like, Okay, I said,
- 23:37Speaker 1: this person looks like they're having a hard time. This
- 23:39Speaker 1: person looks really joyous, great energy. I definitely want to
- 23:41Speaker 1: talk to them. Okay, this person looks like to have
- 23:42Speaker 1: a story. Okay, there's a.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Fly on the wall.
- 23:44Speaker 1: They might have like a nesting issue, Like I'm just
- 23:46Speaker 1: constantly my brain. So I realized at a young age
- 23:50Speaker 1: how much I talk to myself, and for a very
- 23:54Speaker 1: long time it hindered me because I didn't have control
- 23:57Speaker 1: over the granmline. I didn't even have another name for it.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I assume the gremlin was me, So I was like, oh,
- 24:01Speaker 1: we're synonymous. This person, this gremlin just had this tough thought.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I are a bad thought? Am I
- 24:06Speaker 1: a bad person? I didn't realize that that's different. So
- 24:09Speaker 1: it took me a very long time, and it was
- 24:11Speaker 1: at the expense of so much. Like I said, I
- 24:12Speaker 1: wasn't the best player on I played soccer, basketball, and
- 24:15Speaker 1: lacrosse in high school, in basketball in college. But my
- 24:18Speaker 1: self talk is what got in the way of me
- 24:19Speaker 1: being a great player. I was a good player, but
- 24:21Speaker 1: I got in the way of being a great player.
- 24:23Speaker 1: My parents used to bribe me with money to take
- 24:26Speaker 1: shots in high school, like, oh, for every shot you take,
- 24:29Speaker 1: will give you ten dollars. For every make, we'll give
- 24:31Speaker 1: you twenty. Because I just mentally I wasn't able to
- 24:34Speaker 1: do that. I'm like, me, take the game winning shot.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Me take this shot in the corner when this person's
- 24:38Speaker 1: wide open, Like, no, they're better than me.
- 24:40Speaker 2: There.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I used to be sick to my stomach before games.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I would get so nervous, and so what did I do?
- 24:46Speaker 1: I stuck to the hard work, because hard work just
- 24:49Speaker 1: takes heart and commitment. So I wore knee pads and
- 24:53Speaker 1: a mof guard because I dove on the floor for
- 24:55Speaker 1: every loose ball. I led my team in charges like
- 24:57Speaker 1: I'm five seven and I led my team in rebu
- 25:00Speaker 1: my freshman year of college.
- 25:01Speaker 3: You're only five to seven, sure, am Wow. And on
- 25:04Speaker 3: a good day too, I get tall energy. Wow you
- 25:07Speaker 3: saw five nine and a half.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Yeah. And so it's like I have had to learn
- 25:15Speaker 1: how my inner dialogue has not served me so that
- 25:19Speaker 1: it can begin serving me. And so therapist for a while,
- 25:22Speaker 1: life coach still to work on that. I think the
- 25:25Speaker 1: first step where I didn't realize it back then, but
- 25:27Speaker 1: thinking about it now. And I know I'm a very
- 25:29Speaker 1: dramatic person at times, but when I was debating whether
- 25:32Speaker 1: or not to leave education to pursue fitness, it felt
- 25:37Speaker 1: like life or death to me, Like it literally felt
- 25:40Speaker 1: like you need to do this, and I can't describe
- 25:44Speaker 1: it any other way, like it just it was this
- 25:46Speaker 1: like visceral thing where I'm like, you can either there's
- 25:48Speaker 1: nothing wrong with what the path I was on. I mean, shoot,
- 25:51Speaker 1: I was a principal at twenty seven. I got my
- 25:53Speaker 1: master's degree. Like I wanted to be superintendent. I wanted
- 25:55Speaker 1: to get into ed reform. But I was like, you're
- 25:57Speaker 1: you're not aligned with your mission. And I didn't realize
- 26:02Speaker 1: it back then, but I just felt this poll and
- 26:04Speaker 1: so here I am all these years later.
- 26:06Speaker 3: All these years later, and in going through the motions
- 26:10Speaker 3: over the last I was gonna say decade, but I
- 26:12Speaker 3: mean it's.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Fifth finness, not for a decade. On in September will
- 26:16Speaker 1: be eight years.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Eight years, eight years.
- 26:19Speaker 3: In the last eight years to a decade of working
- 26:22Speaker 3: in fitness, you have allowed your heart to lead you.
- 26:26Speaker 3: You have allowed the opportunity to maybe not have everything
- 26:31Speaker 3: put together in a plan, to be the plan one
- 26:34Speaker 3: hundred percent.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Actually, my life coach said to me when I was
- 26:37Speaker 1: going through something years ago, and because I've I used
- 26:42Speaker 1: to say all the time that I'm a perfectionist, right,
- 26:43Speaker 1: like I'm a recovering perfectionist.
- 26:45Speaker 2: And I hated that because I just I just labeling yourself.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah, labeling yourself. And also like everyone, I mean not
- 26:49Speaker 1: everyone is not everyone's a perfectionist. But like I just
- 26:52Speaker 1: was worried that people were judging me or hoping for
- 26:57Speaker 1: me to be perfect, and my life coach was like Jess,
- 26:59Speaker 1: She's like, off of what you tell me. People don't
- 27:02Speaker 1: come to you for perfection now. They come to you
- 27:05Speaker 1: to be inspired. They come to you for help on
- 27:07Speaker 1: their form and a workout plan. They come to you
- 27:10Speaker 1: for a laugh because I mean, I've learned to laugh
- 27:12Speaker 1: at myself, you know, because my gremlin. When I was younger,
- 27:15Speaker 1: it was like I never could laugh at myself. And
- 27:17Speaker 1: the reason my best friend in the world, Nicki, we've
- 27:19Speaker 1: been best friend since we were five. We're polar opposites
- 27:22Speaker 1: in every sense of the word, and she has always
- 27:24Speaker 1: been able to laugh at herself. And we've talked over
- 27:27Speaker 1: the years of just how we love in each other,
- 27:30Speaker 1: but we don't possess ourselves. And that's and I've been
- 27:33Speaker 1: able to embrace and become more like Nicki in a
- 27:36Speaker 1: way because life is short and we're not going to
- 27:39Speaker 1: get out of this thing alive, so enjoy it. Laugh
- 27:41Speaker 1: at yourself, like no one comes to me because they
- 27:43Speaker 1: think I'm perfect, And like, how egotistical of me that
- 27:46Speaker 1: I ever once thought that. People did, you know, Like
- 27:48Speaker 1: my mom, my mom and dad my whole life were like,
- 27:51Speaker 1: you're imperfect and I'm like, no, you're wrong, I'm perfect.
- 27:54Speaker 2: But we are all that way.
- 27:55Speaker 3: That is such a relatable statement, right Like, no one
- 27:58Speaker 3: wants to allow anyone yet typically speaking to see them
- 28:03Speaker 3: slip up.
- 28:03Speaker 2: You want to put your best foot forward.
- 28:05Speaker 3: But in doing that, it's understanding that it doesn't need
- 28:09Speaker 3: to be perfect, it just needs to be maybe the.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Best you have in that moment.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Emily, the number of times if I'm doing a speaking
- 28:15Speaker 1: gig or if like I just you know, I run
- 28:17Speaker 1: into someone and they just ask me a question. So
- 28:19Speaker 1: many times they say, they ask.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Have you ever messed up?
- 28:23Speaker 1: Have you? Have you ever? Have you, especially you know,
- 28:26Speaker 1: because you do a lot of live TV, have you
- 28:27Speaker 1: ever messed up? And if so, what did you do?
- 28:31Speaker 1: I'm like, I can't even answer. I can't tell you
- 28:33Speaker 1: a time because it happened so often, right Like, And
- 28:37Speaker 1: of course, of course it sucks in the moment, like
- 28:39Speaker 1: You're like, damn, I've flubbed all my words. I don't
- 28:42Speaker 1: even know if I spoke English, like, because sometimes it's hard,
- 28:45Speaker 1: you know something, you don't get enough sleep the night before,
- 28:47Speaker 1: your mind wanders for half a second. You're just God
- 28:50Speaker 1: forbid you have a tongue twister like, but I have
- 28:53Speaker 1: been able to recover so quickly from it. My my
- 28:57Speaker 1: life coach said to me. She was like, it's so
- 29:00Speaker 1: amazing that you're able to because I wouldn't before. It
- 29:03Speaker 1: would have paralyzed me. I would have thought about that
- 29:07Speaker 1: every single day until the next time I was gonna
- 29:09Speaker 1: go on camera, and then I would be so nervous
- 29:11Speaker 1: that it was going to happen again. Now I'm able
- 29:13Speaker 1: to be like, Wow, I just completely messed that up.
- 29:18Speaker 1: If someone was watching that, I hope that they, if
- 29:21Speaker 1: they had ever aspirations to get into broadcasts, they're like, wow,
- 29:25Speaker 1: if this girl has this job and she just messed up,
- 29:27Speaker 1: who maybe I can mess up and then it'll be okay.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And that's what I'm here for. I'm here to be
- 29:32Speaker 1: a human and show other people that they can be
- 29:34Speaker 1: human too.
- 29:35Speaker 3: It's so beautiful to see, and I can tell you
- 29:39Speaker 3: for certain that I'm sure that people tune in, and
- 29:43Speaker 3: because you have so many people that love to be
- 29:46Speaker 3: a part of your community, I know that there are
- 29:50Speaker 3: many people watching that do see those things and do.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Feel that way.
- 29:55Speaker 3: As you've been putting yourself out there more, as you've
- 29:58Speaker 3: been taking on more things. You've also been navigating so
- 30:02Speaker 3: many things on the personal side. I know losing your
- 30:06Speaker 3: father at the end of twenty twenty three was something
- 30:09Speaker 3: that really took you back and took you understandably, So
- 30:14Speaker 3: sometime that small things to navigate. How have you learned
- 30:20Speaker 3: to embrace grief while showing up for the things that
- 30:26Speaker 3: matter to you?
- 30:28Speaker 1: Ooh, that is a really great question. So I've learned
- 30:31Speaker 1: a lot about grief since experiencing it. At this magnitude,
- 30:35Speaker 1: grief is not just losing a loved one. It could
- 30:37Speaker 1: be loss of identity, loss of job, loss of a
- 30:40Speaker 1: hope or dream that you have, and of course losing
- 30:43Speaker 1: a loved one like my dad. And I allowed myself
- 30:47Speaker 1: to like feel it very hard. It happened December thirteenth,
- 30:51Speaker 1: and so I just went through the whole Christmas break.
- 30:54Speaker 1: I took a little time off from Peloton. I think
- 30:55Speaker 1: I was supposed to be there for like a couple
- 30:57Speaker 1: days before Christmas, and I just took my time to
- 31:00Speaker 1: just feel it all, to go through all the photos,
- 31:02Speaker 1: the videos, talk about the memories with friends and family,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and cry at everything, but also laugh at things too,
- 31:09Speaker 1: Like my dad was one of the most joyful human
- 31:11Speaker 1: beings on the planet, and he and I would laugh
- 31:15Speaker 1: at things that were not, you know, publicly acceptable as
- 31:19Speaker 1: funny because we would just that's just how we coped
- 31:21Speaker 1: with certain things. So grief is also laughter. So I
- 31:25Speaker 1: was able to feel all the feels like deeply. And
- 31:28Speaker 1: then I got back to Pelton. I was very nervous
- 31:30Speaker 1: about my first class back. I wasn't nervous about crying
- 31:32Speaker 1: and being real. I was just nervous just because I
- 31:34Speaker 1: just didn't know how I was going to respond. And
- 31:36Speaker 1: I ended up getting through it was a bike boot camp.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I got through it just fine. But at the beginning
- 31:40Speaker 1: of class, I say, we all have stresses, worries, concerns, anxieties, judgments, expectations, pressures, comparisons, projections.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I added grief and miscellaneous toxicity. That was the last
- 31:51Speaker 1: one always, and that's so I added grief. And it's
- 31:54Speaker 1: so interesting, Emily, because some people noticed it right away.
- 31:58Speaker 1: The people who noticed it I've recently experienced grief and
- 32:02Speaker 1: then would thank me for adding that because it is
- 32:06Speaker 1: such a human thing that can affect us in so
- 32:09Speaker 1: many different ways.
- 32:10Speaker 2: And now to this day, I get.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Dms from people saying like I've literally gotten dms from
- 32:15Speaker 1: people saying, Jess, I just found out my mom died
- 32:18Speaker 1: fifteen minutes ago. I don't know what to do? What
- 32:22Speaker 1: can you say to me? And I've sent voice notes
- 32:25Speaker 1: back to these dms when I see them, because what
- 32:28Speaker 1: an honor is to be thought of in such a
- 32:35Speaker 1: devastating time in someone's life that they feel safe enough
- 32:37Speaker 1: to come talk to me. And I think that's only
- 32:39Speaker 1: because I've been vulnerable about what grief is. Of course
- 32:43Speaker 1: I haven't talked about, you know, the nitty gritty details,
- 32:45Speaker 1: and I will, but I think that by me talking
- 32:49Speaker 1: about grief just already destigmatizes what people think it is.
- 32:53Speaker 2: And it's also something that every single human being will
- 32:57Speaker 2: go through.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And I spoke pathpal is, this incredible company based in
- 33:02Speaker 1: Canada that did a grief summit and there's gonna be
- 33:06Speaker 1: one in New York in London as well. But I
- 33:08Speaker 1: spoke at it and what I learned and it like
- 33:13Speaker 1: hit me in the face. Be all here, there are
- 33:15Speaker 1: stages of grief. There are no stages. It's not like, oh,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I finished stage one and months to two, okay, if
- 33:20Speaker 1: there were only three more and then I'm done with
- 33:22Speaker 1: this thing called grief. Grief is with you forever. And
- 33:25Speaker 1: my best friend Nikki, who I mentioned, she lost her
- 33:27Speaker 1: mom so wild in April, on April twenty first of
- 33:32Speaker 1: that same year, and my dad passed on her mom's birthday.
- 33:35Speaker 1: So I came home on her mom's first birthday of
- 33:39Speaker 1: her being no longer being here, and I walked through
- 33:43Speaker 1: the front door and she thought I was there for
- 33:45Speaker 1: that for a second, but I spoke with her partner
- 33:48Speaker 1: and I was like, Hey, my dad passed this morning.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna need a place to state tonight, and so
- 33:53Speaker 1: he knew I was coming. But Nikki saw me and
- 33:55Speaker 1: I told her and she just like we just hugged,
- 33:58Speaker 1: and immediately after I said, your mom probably slapped my
- 34:02Speaker 1: dad upside the head and.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Said, Rick, what are you doing here? Like what's going on?
- 34:06Speaker 1: And my Dad's like, Karen, I can't let you celebrate
- 34:08Speaker 1: your first birthday by yourself. And it's like that kind
- 34:11Speaker 1: of beauty. I just choose to see some beauty with it, because.
- 34:16Speaker 2: It is a beautiful thing. At the end of the day.
- 34:18Speaker 1: It's something again that we're all going to experience. And
- 34:20Speaker 1: so this is a very long winded answer to say,
- 34:22Speaker 1: like by me talking about losing my dad. It has
- 34:26Speaker 1: allowed members and other people that don't even know me.
- 34:29Speaker 3: To feel seen. There's so many things to double click
- 34:33Speaker 3: in on there. Thank you for sharing, of course, the
- 34:36Speaker 3: first being I know that that day that you lost
- 34:39Speaker 3: your father, something else very special happened for you.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 34:42Speaker 1: See, and I forgot about that until this very moment.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, talk about goosebumps. So woke up, it
- 34:48Speaker 1: was an ordinary It was a Wednesday. Woke up and
- 34:51Speaker 1: at like a right before eight o'clock in the morning,
- 34:53Speaker 1: so relatively early. I get a text message from an
- 34:55Speaker 1: executive at ESPN who we had met once before. She said,
- 34:59Speaker 1: but we didn't I know each other. And she was like, hey,
- 35:01Speaker 1: do you have any time to chat through an opportunity?
- 35:04Speaker 1: And I was like okay, And I assumed it had
- 35:06Speaker 1: something to do with men's college basketball as part of
- 35:09Speaker 1: game day, to have the similar role of like sense
- 35:11Speaker 1: of place kind of thing, and so I said sure,
- 35:14Speaker 1: So I said give me a call. So I think
- 35:16Speaker 1: it was like around eight forty five that morning. She
- 35:18Speaker 1: calls me. Not only does she offer me this new
- 35:20Speaker 1: role as sideline reporter for men's Saturday night Prime working
- 35:25Speaker 1: alongside two of the best, Dan Schulman Jay Billis. But
- 35:29Speaker 1: then she also said things like I want to take
- 35:32Speaker 1: you under my wing. I want you to have different
- 35:34Speaker 1: experiences within ESPN because I care about you as an individual.
- 35:38Speaker 1: It just felt very like WHOA, Like someone's looking out
- 35:40Speaker 1: for me.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I hang up the phone.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I call my agent.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Did you know this well?
- 35:45Speaker 1: But he was like no, like and usually they give
- 35:47Speaker 1: some sort of heads up and I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 35:48Speaker 1: this is amazing. I hang up the phone. Ten minutes later,
- 35:51Speaker 1: my cousin calls me. My dad passed away. So when
- 35:54Speaker 1: I spoke to Tunday, who's also no stranger to loss,
- 35:57Speaker 1: lost her mom, dad, and brother within three years of
- 36:00Speaker 1: each other, all of them, she was like, Wow, your
- 36:03Speaker 1: dad didn't even sit down take his coat off before
- 36:07Speaker 1: he was like, wait a minute. We need to make
- 36:08Speaker 1: sure that my daughter knows that she's covered, she's protected,
- 36:12Speaker 1: she's supported, and that I'm there for her because basketball
- 36:15Speaker 1: was our thing. My dad was just inducted into the
- 36:17Speaker 1: Hall of Fame, the Athletics Hall of Fame for Framingham
- 36:19Speaker 1: State College because he started the basketball program there. Yeah,
- 36:23Speaker 1: so it's it was such a wild thing. And then
- 36:26Speaker 1: at first I was like, oh my gosh, I don't
- 36:27Speaker 1: get to share this with him.
- 36:28Speaker 2: But I'm like, wait, he already knows he did this,
- 36:30Speaker 2: He did it, he did it?
- 36:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, So and I've gotten so much, like I'm
- 36:33Speaker 1: open to all the signs from my dad and he
- 36:35Speaker 1: has been very, very present in my life since passing.
- 36:39Speaker 3: It's such a beautiful thing to hear about the way
- 36:45Speaker 3: you pay attention have to for him. Yes, that is
- 36:50Speaker 3: a choice that you make, just like the choice that
- 36:54Speaker 3: you make to look at messages like oh my god,
- 36:58Speaker 3: my significant other just passed way and think how lucky
- 37:02Speaker 3: am I that I'm the person that gets to be
- 37:06Speaker 3: here for you? And one could anticipate maybe wonder how
- 37:14Speaker 3: being in that position, being this person for so many people,
- 37:21Speaker 3: how do you do that?
- 37:23Speaker 2: So it's interesting. Everything always goes back to teaching.
- 37:29Speaker 1: When students would come to the door, we offer them
- 37:31Speaker 1: three different menus of greetings. Do you want a hug,
- 37:34Speaker 1: a high five, or a handshake, And it gives them
- 37:38Speaker 1: the opportunity to select whatever they're comfortable with or what
- 37:41Speaker 1: they need in that moment. And as human beings, we
- 37:44Speaker 1: want to be helped, heard, or hugged, and so when
- 37:50Speaker 1: I get to meet Peloton members in real life, whether
- 37:53Speaker 1: it's at the airport, which I spend a lot of
- 37:54Speaker 1: time at, or at Peloton Studios in New York, I
- 37:58Speaker 1: think about those three things. But when I meet people,
- 38:01Speaker 1: I've already helped them, because I used to put pressure
- 38:04Speaker 1: on myself like oh my gosh, like how do I
- 38:06Speaker 1: respond and deliver? You know, they'll share something with me,
- 38:08Speaker 1: and then I feel like I need to say the
- 38:10Speaker 1: perfect thing or else say it. If I don't, then
- 38:12Speaker 1: they're gonna fa That's not what these interactions are about. There,
- 38:16Speaker 1: I always hug them. So the hug is the hug
- 38:18Speaker 1: is always there. If they want it, I've already helped them.
- 38:20Speaker 1: So what is the last age that is needed? They
- 38:23Speaker 1: want to be heard. If you've been working out with
- 38:25Speaker 1: me since the pandemic, since before the pandemic, that means
- 38:28Speaker 1: I've been talking at you for six plus years, telling
- 38:30Speaker 1: you to do a lot of burpies, a lot of
- 38:32Speaker 1: push up squats, all that good stuff. So people just
- 38:34Speaker 1: want an opportunity to share a little bit of their
- 38:36Speaker 1: story and oftentimes to say thank you. And so sometimes
- 38:39Speaker 1: just being yourself and just listening, like truly listening, being
- 38:43Speaker 1: present is enough. And I think that's something that I
- 38:47Speaker 1: have had to remind myself of because you know me again,
- 38:50Speaker 1: mediator fixer, like, Okay, this person's going to like, how
- 38:53Speaker 1: do I that's not what they need?
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 38:56Speaker 3: Yeah, And getting to a place where you know that
- 39:00Speaker 3: and can firmly stand in that. Yeah.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And actually this reminds me too to connect my dad
- 39:05Speaker 1: to this situation. So my father passed away from complications
- 39:09Speaker 1: from alcoholism, and I didn't say that. I didn't announce
- 39:14Speaker 1: that until I think it was the one year anniversary
- 39:17Speaker 1: of his death. So while almost two years ago, I
- 39:20Speaker 1: put up a post and I put that up and
- 39:23Speaker 1: I will never forget because I had a woman reach
- 39:26Speaker 1: out in response DM to that, and she said, Wow,
- 39:33Speaker 1: based off of how highly you spoke of your dad,
- 39:37Speaker 1: I never would have thought that he passed away from
- 39:39Speaker 1: alcoholism because my mom is struggling with alcoholism or my
- 39:46Speaker 1: mom passed away from alcoholism, and I didn't have those
- 39:50Speaker 1: same feelings.
- 39:51Speaker 2: She didn't pass away yet, That's what it was. She
- 39:53Speaker 2: was struggling.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Because then she said, I feel like I might need
- 39:57Speaker 1: to give my mom a little compassion and grace based
- 40:00Speaker 1: off of what you shared because I never would have
- 40:02Speaker 1: guessed they thought it was something else, and so I
- 40:04Speaker 1: was just that had me thinking and feeling for a
- 40:07Speaker 1: while because I was like, whoa.
- 40:09Speaker 2: And alcoholism is tough.
- 40:14Speaker 1: It's something that I witnessed my dad going from the
- 40:18Speaker 1: strongest person I knew physically and mentally to the weakest.
- 40:23Speaker 1: And that's not for the faintom heart. And it's something
- 40:28Speaker 1: that takes lots of phases and trial and error, the
- 40:32Speaker 1: tough love, the boundary setting, the love, the all of
- 40:36Speaker 1: the above. But I was like wow by me sharing
- 40:41Speaker 1: how much I loved my dad, and my dad was
- 40:43Speaker 1: deeply flawed, deeply, but I love my dad so much
- 40:48Speaker 1: because he's done so much for me. I am who
- 40:50Speaker 1: I am obviously large in part because of who my
- 40:52Speaker 1: dad was and is for me. And so I think
- 40:56Speaker 1: it's the fact that that was received was probably the
- 41:00Speaker 1: most beautiful gift that I could have given without even
- 41:03Speaker 1: knowing I.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Was giving it. Yeah, it's.
- 41:07Speaker 3: All happening for you, Yes, And it's something that so
- 41:12Speaker 3: many people might hear something like that and think it's
- 41:14Speaker 3: woo woo, But the evidence is there, right, And so
- 41:18Speaker 3: when you can take a step back and say to yourself.
- 41:21Speaker 3: I know for a fact that all of these things
- 41:25Speaker 3: have helped me become who I am. There's so much
- 41:28Speaker 3: power in that. Yes, there's so much power in that.
- 41:31Speaker 3: You said the magical W word workout, and you did
- 41:37Speaker 3: earlier in that, in that little explanation, something that you
- 41:40Speaker 3: make others do very regularly. Some mostly love you for it,
- 41:45Speaker 3: mostly mostly What is your current relationship with working out?
- 41:51Speaker 3: Knowing that this season, I'm talking to a lot of
- 41:54Speaker 3: runners on the show, I know you yourself dabbled in
- 41:58Speaker 3: your marathon era did.
- 41:59Speaker 2: And I don't know if we're going to go back there. Well,
- 42:02Speaker 2: it's just so fun.
- 42:03Speaker 3: I mean, it takes so the opportunity cost for a
- 42:06Speaker 3: marathon is so hot h and I just have not
- 42:09Speaker 3: I don't need to prioritize that right now my life.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I mean, I've said, I've said I'll run another one.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I've said I'd run like no more than three. I
- 42:15Speaker 1: did Boston, and I would love to do New York
- 42:17Speaker 1: just because it's been such a party. And I go
- 42:19Speaker 1: and celebrate it every year because sharing everyone on is
- 42:22Speaker 1: like my favorite thing.
- 42:22Speaker 2: And then I do like one random one. Maybe I'll
- 42:24Speaker 2: go to Europe and do one there. Let's do a one.
- 42:27Speaker 2: See now we're talking exactly.
- 42:29Speaker 1: And so yeah, so I'm definitely not training for a
- 42:32Speaker 1: marathon anytime soon, just because that's just not where my
- 42:34Speaker 1: heart is at or my legs. But I had the
- 42:37Speaker 1: best experience, most life changing experience, running the Boston Marathon
- 42:41Speaker 1: for Michelle Blackburn, a Peloton member who was at the
- 42:44Speaker 1: finish line during the bombing of the Boston Marathon, and
- 42:48Speaker 1: so that whole experience was life changing and I love it.
- 42:53Speaker 1: And my best friend Jesse is training for Berlin right now.
- 42:56Speaker 1: It's I don't know how many marathons she's run, she's
- 42:58Speaker 1: run an ultra.
- 42:59Speaker 2: I love people who run. Matthon's bless you. It is
- 43:01Speaker 2: just not me right.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Now because we're on our own movement journey to your
- 43:06Speaker 1: point in this question. Right now, I'm so excited because
- 43:10Speaker 1: I am two months strong of working out with a
- 43:13Speaker 1: trainer twice a week. Good for you, And that is
- 43:16Speaker 1: so much more because people at home are probably like,
- 43:18Speaker 1: oh my gosh, what do you mean you're a trainer yourself. Yes,
- 43:23Speaker 1: of course, But the last thing I want to do
- 43:25Speaker 1: is make a program for myself. I program a playlist
- 43:28Speaker 1: for a living. The last thing I want to do
- 43:29Speaker 1: is figure out what I need to do. And also
- 43:31Speaker 1: I think it's very important, just like therapists have therapists
- 43:33Speaker 1: like it's important for me to have a trainer because
- 43:35Speaker 1: he and I will literally go over like what I'm
- 43:38Speaker 1: doing that week and figure out where to fill in
- 43:41Speaker 1: the gaps. So eight weeks strong, twice a week, and
- 43:46Speaker 1: including when I was in Minneapolis for eight days, so
- 43:49Speaker 1: we did it virtually twice. And so it's again it's
- 43:52Speaker 1: the injury prevention, which is always first and foremost in
- 43:57Speaker 1: my mind because of my job. So it just feels
- 44:00Speaker 1: good to work out again for me. I'm so lucky
- 44:04Speaker 1: to have been a peloton now for almost eight years
- 44:06Speaker 1: in fitness two years before that, but like when that's
- 44:08Speaker 1: your job, you don't get to necessarily prioritize it in
- 44:10Speaker 1: that way. So I'm feeling very good about that. And
- 44:12Speaker 1: before this, before the trainer, it was all about healing
- 44:15Speaker 1: from injury because I had I tore my meniscus. Yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 1: and gosh, we're in twenty twenty six, December of twenty
- 44:21Speaker 1: twenty four, yeah, so yeah, it's been a long journey
- 44:25Speaker 1: of injury for you.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the right side I tore my ACL
- 44:30Speaker 1: playing basketball my junior year of college, and then my
- 44:33Speaker 1: meniscus two years ago.
- 44:51Speaker 3: So many listening to this certainly have navigated their own
- 44:56Speaker 3: fair share of injury. For you, someone who uses your
- 44:59Speaker 3: boy for your job, it's imperative for what you do, understandably,
- 45:04Speaker 3: so being on the sidelines may impact the way that
- 45:09Speaker 3: you go about your day to day, the way that
- 45:11Speaker 3: you view your self worth. How did you make sure
- 45:14Speaker 3: not to let your injury define you and what was
- 45:18Speaker 3: your mental state like during that time.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I love an injury.
- 45:23Speaker 1: I genuinely love an injury. And I know that sounds crazy,
- 45:31Speaker 1: but it's information. It's part of the process. You didn't
- 45:34Speaker 1: do anything wrong. I mean, obviously if you stepped off
- 45:37Speaker 1: a curb and like that, that's not ideal. But it's
- 45:40Speaker 1: time for you to learn something about your body or
- 45:46Speaker 1: maybe your mind. I get so many dms of members
- 45:51Speaker 1: that say, es, I have a three hundred and nine
- 45:56Speaker 1: million day streak at Peloton and I have been lifting
- 46:01Speaker 1: three days a week for six months and I just.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Got word that I have to have surgery. What do
- 46:06Speaker 2: I do?
- 46:07Speaker 1: I'm like, read a book exist figure out why that happened.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Because whenever there's an injury, it's usually something above or
- 46:17Speaker 1: below that's the root cause of it. But then you know,
- 46:20Speaker 1: our body just it works as a beautiful machine that
- 46:22Speaker 1: takes over. So if the kneed's not doing what it's
- 46:24Speaker 1: supposed to do, the ankle's going to do it, the
- 46:25Speaker 1: hip's going to do it. Then the back's going to
- 46:27Speaker 1: get involved. And so it's like, let's figure out where
- 46:29Speaker 1: the dysfunction is that we can be better for our
- 46:32Speaker 1: body and learn from this. And you didn't do anything
- 46:35Speaker 1: wrong to get an injury. Look at professional athletes at
- 46:38Speaker 1: the highest level, athletes come it's a risk, it's part
- 46:42Speaker 1: of that in your training and your performance. And so
- 46:45Speaker 1: try to spend as little time in the suffering phase
- 46:48Speaker 1: of fighting what is and move more into the acceptance
- 46:51Speaker 1: phase because it's all happening for you. I mentioned Michelle Blackburn,
- 46:56Speaker 1: who I ran the Bosson Marathon for. I didn't give
- 47:00Speaker 1: him much backstory to that, but she was a Pelton member.
- 47:03Speaker 1: She started to take outdoor walks and runs with me
- 47:07Speaker 1: and realized like, oh my gosh, I'm a runner. Because
- 47:09Speaker 1: she was supporting her roommate at the time at the
- 47:11Speaker 1: finish line in Boston. So she was not running there.
- 47:14Speaker 1: But then the Boston Marathon gives her a bib for
- 47:17Speaker 1: her or someone to run in her honor. So I
- 47:18Speaker 1: did that for her. And then the next year she
- 47:20Speaker 1: was like, should I keep the bib for myself? And
- 47:23Speaker 1: I'm like, yes, like, let's do this. So she trained
- 47:28Speaker 1: for it, she did some press interviews. It was like storybook, right, beautiful.
- 47:33Speaker 1: What happened like a month before the marathon, she got
- 47:37Speaker 1: a stress fracture in her hip, devastating, right, like, oh
- 47:41Speaker 1: my gosh, Like, you worked so hard, you trained for
- 47:43Speaker 1: months for this.
- 47:45Speaker 2: It wasn't the right time. It wasn't the right time.
- 47:48Speaker 1: She rehabbed, she got to the root of the issue.
- 47:50Speaker 1: She figured out the strength, training, the nutrition, She learned
- 47:53Speaker 1: so much about her body to become an even stronger
- 47:56Speaker 1: vessel and human being. And what happened the next year
- 47:58Speaker 1: she ran that Boston Marathon and had experiences along that
- 48:03Speaker 1: race that.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Who knows if she would have had it if she
- 48:05Speaker 2: ran it that year.
- 48:06Speaker 1: So again it like, yes, it hurts, obviously when I
- 48:09Speaker 1: say injury, I love injury. Obviously, I do not love
- 48:11Speaker 1: it when it happens, but I love what it does
- 48:13Speaker 1: for us. So try to move from the why me,
- 48:17Speaker 1: pour me phase of things and into the surrender of like, okay,
- 48:21Speaker 1: what is this here to do? And a lot of
- 48:24Speaker 1: times too for the peloton streak, I'm like, take meditation
- 48:28Speaker 1: because your heart and mind probably need a moment to
- 48:32Speaker 1: breathe and to feel the feels and be in your
- 48:35Speaker 1: body without doing cardio.
- 48:37Speaker 3: What was the highlight of your injury cycle this time around?
- 48:44Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, the meniscus. Yeah, well, can I tell
- 48:46Speaker 1: you it was not diagnosed. I was in pain since February.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I hate that for you, of February of twenty twenty four,
- 48:55Speaker 1: and it wasn't until October. And I mean acupuncture, PTA, Cairo, MRIs,
- 49:02Speaker 1: you name it. I had it, scans of all types, okay,
- 49:06Speaker 1: MRI listen of all like literally out of all.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Of that, like we weren't finding it in the MRI.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Now okay no, And a second MRI confirmed it. Yeah,
- 49:17Speaker 1: and this will. Ironically enough, I didn't MRI have my
- 49:20Speaker 1: hamstring because it was like, I'm very I'm overly flexible,
- 49:24Speaker 1: and so it was like, well, maybe there's a hamstring issue.
- 49:26Speaker 1: So we didn't MRI have the hamstring. And funny enough,
- 49:29Speaker 1: I had a partially torn hamstring, but.
- 49:31Speaker 2: It was already healing. But that was they thought it
- 49:34Speaker 2: was that was the root of the problem.
- 49:35Speaker 1: So they're like, oh, just keep doing the rehab that
- 49:37Speaker 1: you're doing and it'll be So it was not that
- 49:38Speaker 1: it was the meniscuit. So I felt relief when I
- 49:41Speaker 1: found out, Yeah, I already had. Really I was ready,
- 49:45Speaker 1: like I don't it was. I was like, I just
- 49:48Speaker 1: need to get someone, tell me what this is, give
- 49:49Speaker 1: me a roadmap. So and then I got to be
- 49:51Speaker 1: up state. I had surgery. I think it was the
- 49:53Speaker 1: eighteenth of December. I had two days of PETE and
- 49:56Speaker 1: then it was like the holidays, so I got to
- 49:57Speaker 1: go upstate, relaxed, relax, do all my pt virtually, my gosh,
- 50:01Speaker 1: my pet Snae was texting me, all right, it's times
- 50:04Speaker 1: I'm like, Snae, leave me alone. It's Christmas Eve. So
- 50:07Speaker 1: I actually genuinely enjoyed it. And there's a part of me.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I love being a beginner again. It's like to have
- 50:14Speaker 1: a fresh start, to start the cycle again. It's really
- 50:17Speaker 1: a beautiful thing. It's humbling, but I love a challenge,
- 50:19Speaker 1: so like I'll never forget. We got on the small
- 50:23Speaker 1: crank bike, so it like literally like does this And
- 50:25Speaker 1: I was like, whoa to go from sixty resistance to
- 50:28Speaker 1: this little this barely bringing my leg around. I was like,
- 50:31Speaker 1: I was laughing. I was like this, Okay, we got
- 50:33Speaker 1: some work to do, but it's exciting because like, what's
- 50:36Speaker 1: the point of you're just always great at everything and
- 50:39Speaker 1: you're just always if everything.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Feels easy to you.
- 50:41Speaker 1: It's like we need to have these moments, these cycles
- 50:43Speaker 1: in our lives.
- 50:45Speaker 3: What are you more of a beginner at right now?
- 50:48Speaker 3: Oh God, where are you a student in this moment?
- 50:52Speaker 2: And so much having fun outside of work? Oh look
- 50:57Speaker 2: at her go.
- 50:58Speaker 3: I know you're a little you're a little sleepy still
- 51:00Speaker 3: from that concert the other day.
- 51:01Speaker 1: I mean I was. I didn't I was still three.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I was fully expecting that we may reschedule today. Are
- 51:08Speaker 2: you proud of me?
- 51:09Speaker 3: No, dude, Like I was like, if it had been yesterday,
- 51:12Speaker 3: I would have totally expected it.
- 51:13Speaker 2: And then I was like, I have one day, Like
- 51:15Speaker 2: I think I'm going to get full job.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Not only No, I didn't cancel my trainer yesterday and
- 51:19Speaker 1: had I had to. I had a thirty minute strength
- 51:20Speaker 1: and a thirty minute run yesterday, and I had a trainer,
- 51:22Speaker 1: before my trainer.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Before what time was the first commitment?
- 51:25Speaker 1: I had a meeting at noon.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Okay, so that's not terrible that that's doable.
- 51:29Speaker 1: No, But but what I talked about in class during
- 51:31Speaker 1: that run last night was I was very vulnerable. I
- 51:34Speaker 1: like had a moment where I was just like, I
- 51:36Speaker 1: constantly asked myself at what cost? Right? And so when
- 51:39Speaker 1: I'm at this Jay Z concert, which is a once
- 51:40Speaker 1: in a lifetime opportunity to give in the people that
- 51:42Speaker 1: I knew he was going to be bringing out chat Rihanna,
- 51:44Speaker 1: I had a feeling. I manifested it, knew it, knew it.
- 51:47Speaker 1: I was like, okay, you could leave this concert before
- 51:49Speaker 1: it starts. It started at twelve seventeen because of a
- 51:53Speaker 1: security breach and at Yankee Stadium. But then I was like,
- 51:57Speaker 1: you can sleep in. It's one day. You don't get
- 52:00Speaker 1: to do this often. Bad you with a great group
- 52:03Speaker 1: of people.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Just enjoy it. Be where your.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Feet are, Like life is meant to be lived. And
- 52:09Speaker 1: I love boring. I love being at home. I love
- 52:11Speaker 1: all of that.
- 52:12Speaker 2: But it is nice every once in a while to
- 52:14Speaker 2: have a little fun. You and me both sister, So yeah,
- 52:17Speaker 2: we're learning we are, we're learning.
- 52:19Speaker 3: We genuinely are, And I would love your take on it,
- 52:23Speaker 3: because sometimes I I feel like there's a fine line
- 52:29Speaker 3: between knowing the things that make me feel good in
- 52:34Speaker 3: the routine, in the things that I enjoy. I'm also
- 52:37Speaker 3: an extreme homebody. I also travel like you and trying
- 52:42Speaker 3: to open myself up to the fun. It's like it's
- 52:46Speaker 3: that question you're asking yourself at what cost and sometimes
- 52:51Speaker 3: articulating those costs and specifically articulating the choice to people
- 52:55Speaker 3: that you care about and that care about you.
- 52:57Speaker 2: It can be really challenging. It can be.
- 53:00Speaker 1: It can be, but the people that love you and
- 53:02Speaker 1: respect you will understand that. And I try to honor
- 53:04Speaker 1: the commitments that I do make and also knowing myself,
- 53:07Speaker 1: like I try not to commit to things too far
- 53:09Speaker 1: in advance, because to your point, like if it's not
- 53:13Speaker 1: the jay Z concert, it's you know, I just taught
- 53:15Speaker 1: all these classes in the last couple of days, and
- 53:17Speaker 1: I'm tired because I just got back from a trip
- 53:19Speaker 1: as well, and so communicating that is really really important.
- 53:22Speaker 1: But yeah, it's It's good though, because I'd.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Rather be this way, what way the way of I'd
- 53:31Speaker 3: rather be a woman that understands the value of all
- 53:34Speaker 3: the things that you and I share in common and
- 53:36Speaker 3: value and then make the choice to put myself out
- 53:39Speaker 3: there and like try these new experiences and have fun.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Yes, if that makes sense.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Yes, I will say I struggled. I've struggled with before,
- 53:46Speaker 1: and I'm probably always going to struggle with, like the
- 53:48Speaker 1: fine line between self sabotage, enjoying yourself and discipline. It's
- 53:55Speaker 1: like this thing where I'm like, yeah, treat yourself, and
- 54:00Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my gosh, but not this past week.
- 54:02Speaker 1: But in general, if I'm out to dinner, I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 54:04Speaker 1: like eat all of this food, like even though I
- 54:07Speaker 1: know dairy doesn't always sit super well with my stomach.
- 54:09Speaker 1: And I have an eight am class the next day.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Is it self sabotage that I'm going to have the
- 54:13Speaker 1: extra slice of pizza? Or is it yolo? Like enjoy
- 54:16Speaker 1: your life and so But and it's tough because I
- 54:20Speaker 1: don't know, and sometime and you live and you learn
- 54:22Speaker 1: I've done I've said no to the extra slice or yesterday,
- 54:25Speaker 1: and I've you know, suffered the consequences both ways. But
- 54:28Speaker 1: I feel like everything is hard. Everything is hard in life.
- 54:31Speaker 1: You got to choose your heart. Whatever path you take,
- 54:34Speaker 1: it's going to have, it's it's ups and downs.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Do the best you can with what you have.
- 54:38Speaker 1: You got to do that, and then you just make
- 54:39Speaker 1: the decision and don't beat yourself up for it, because
- 54:41Speaker 1: that's the other thing too, is like if I make
- 54:42Speaker 1: the decision, I'm not going to go back and be
- 54:44Speaker 1: because my gremlin will be Like. See, we went through
- 54:46Speaker 1: the logistics and we said, don't do this, like I
- 54:49Speaker 1: don't engage with the gremlin when the finger energy is
- 54:52Speaker 1: creeping in.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Can't do that. We don't want.
- 54:53Speaker 1: That doesn't serve us.
- 54:54Speaker 2: No, it doesn't serve us at all.
- 54:58Speaker 3: You have quite the community over on social and of
- 55:03Speaker 3: course also the massively increasingly growing, constantly evolving group of
- 55:10Speaker 3: Peloton members. So many of them look to you and
- 55:14Speaker 3: they see this woman who is not only their instructor
- 55:18Speaker 3: but also on air talent at ESPN and doing so
- 55:22Speaker 3: many outstanding things. But when you look in the mirror address,
- 55:25Speaker 3: what is it that you see looking back at you?
- 55:28Speaker 1: See? How dare you? I was about to go in
- 55:30Speaker 1: about how much I love my you get to crew,
- 55:32Speaker 1: love my curstyle, crew love everyone at Peloton because they
- 55:35Speaker 1: just show up. Like even when I was at Special
- 55:37Speaker 1: Olympics two weeks ago, the crew in Minneapolis literally came
- 55:39Speaker 1: to the track, spent the day supporting these amazing athletes,
- 55:42Speaker 1: and then brought me donuts.
- 55:44Speaker 2: We love donuts like we love donuts.
- 55:46Speaker 1: It's just I'm so spoiled. It's like the privilege of
- 55:49Speaker 1: a lifetime. I will never take it for granted. They
- 55:51Speaker 1: travel the game day, they come to take Peloton Studios
- 55:54Speaker 1: New York classes, like they'll get in off the waitlist
- 55:56Speaker 1: on a Thursday for my Sunday class in I've had
- 55:59Speaker 1: people from London from a Thursday wait list. Yes, So
- 56:03Speaker 1: I'm doing all this to deflect.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Mirror. I look in the mirror, I see a beautiful spirit.
- 56:11Speaker 1: I see a flawed human being who is just working
- 56:17Speaker 1: really hard every day to make this world a little
- 56:20Speaker 1: bit of a better place while simultaneously making her home.
- 56:25Speaker 2: What's behind the eyes? Uh, safer space to live in
- 56:30Speaker 2: her home? What's behind the eyes?
- 56:34Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I really see, because what I'm good at.
- 56:37Speaker 1: When I start to like rip myself apart, oh this
- 56:40Speaker 1: looks s I'm just like thank God for everything that
- 56:45Speaker 1: I have and everything that I am because I'm me.
- 56:48Speaker 1: I'm never going to be anyone else. Might as well
- 56:51Speaker 1: hype myself up in the best way that I can.
- 56:53Speaker 1: And if and if I can't, if I can't push
- 56:55Speaker 1: myself to positive, just keep it to neutral. I don't
- 56:58Speaker 1: need to.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Be because toxic.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Positivity is totally a thing, and if I'm not feeling it,
- 57:02Speaker 1: I don't force it.
- 57:03Speaker 2: I'm just like, Okay, here I am. I'm a human being.
- 57:06Speaker 3: This is how I show up today. Yeah, Just Sims.
- 57:09Speaker 3: So happy that you came in here. It's long overdue,
- 57:13Speaker 3: long overdue, weird.
- 57:14Speaker 1: That we didn't have apps, and like we are at
- 57:17Speaker 1: our dinner dates, at our dinner dates.
- 57:19Speaker 2: I know, no soft blanc, are you, Martine?
- 57:21Speaker 1: I know?
- 57:22Speaker 2: So rude of me at the middle of the day.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Is I'm going to come in?
- 57:25Speaker 2: I wouldn't that be the dream next time?
- 57:28Speaker 3: So many of these people that are listening to this
- 57:29Speaker 3: right now are obviously massive Sims fans.
- 57:32Speaker 2: But for those that somehow may be new to you,
- 57:35Speaker 2: where do they find you on the socials? Give us
- 57:36Speaker 2: the info question, Jess Sims.
- 57:38Speaker 1: So there's three s's because Just Sims only one MS
- 57:41Speaker 1: very important Just Sims on Instagram. I believe a girl.
- 57:44Speaker 1: I've not been on TikTok since like nineteen eighty two, Nosh.
- 57:47Speaker 1: I think it's just Sims on there and then on
- 57:49Speaker 1: exits UNDERSCORESS underscore Sims.
- 57:52Speaker 2: She's everywhere, y'all.
- 57:54Speaker 3: I'm over at Eily a body at Hurdle Podcast Another
- 57:58Speaker 3: Hurdle conquered.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time, m hm
