Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, so I complained of a light
- 0:24Newsday on Tuesday, and we woke up yesterday morning to the news
- 0:29that Taylor Swift was engaged, which could not be bigger pop
- 0:33culture news if I tried. So we're just getting right into
- 0:37it. But before I do, Please remember
- 0:38to rate, review and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 0:41It helps us so much. It helps us grow.
- 0:44Leave us an Apple review, buy us a coffee if you feel so
- 0:46inclined. All of that good stuff.
- 0:49All right, so yes, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey are engaged.
- 0:53The two announced it on Instagram with photos of Travis
- 0:55proposing in a secret fairy garden.
- 0:58And the caption, your English teacher and your gym teacher are
- 1:01getting married. OK, so this garden was
- 1:05definitely paying homage to the lover garden from that era.
- 1:10It looked so similar. The whole thing felt very Taylor
- 1:13Swift, like the garden, the ring, even what she was wearing.
- 1:16It seemed very her. My theory is that these were
- 1:20staged photos. I think she looks way too chill
- 1:23in them for this to be like the real proposal.
- 1:26Like from what we know, Taylor Swift is such a romantic.
- 1:30Like, she's such a lover girl. Like she wasn't crying.
- 1:33She wasn't even really smiling that much.
- 1:35I feel like this was the staged announcement photo shoot that
- 1:39she had a bit of a hand in, especially with like the garden
- 1:42situation, I feel. And maybe they got engaged, you
- 1:45know, secretly, privately, like before this.
- 1:48Now there are a lot of people criticizing the timing of this
- 1:51announcement. So taken it back to when Taylor
- 1:55announced her new album, Life of a Showgirl social media since
- 1:59she announced that because that was basically her like coming
- 2:02back post eras tour, right? So since she kind of came back,
- 2:06went on the podcast, announced the album, people have been
- 2:09criticizing her on social media for how she refuses to use her
- 2:13giant platform to speak up about Gaza or other social and
- 2:17political causes. And a huge part of this argument
- 2:20is when she released the Miss Americana documentary in which
- 2:23she made it clear that she wants to be more politically and
- 2:26socially responsible with her platform.
- 2:29You know, right after that she has wasn't really done or said
- 2:32very much so online right now since she announced her album
- 2:36and kind of made her official like return post errors tour,
- 2:39there's been so much criticism of Taylor online, including
- 2:43Swifties. Like people are criticizing her
- 2:45a lot and saying she stands for nothing and that's what it feels
- 2:47like. So the theory now is to drown up
- 2:49some of that criticism. They've announced their
- 2:51engagement. I honestly don't think the
- 2:55engagement announcement is in response to the backlash.
- 2:59I think, like, in the scheme of online backlash that Taylor
- 3:02Swift has received, this has not been as loud as I think it needs
- 3:07to be for her to like, try and veer off course or like change
- 3:11the narrative. I think it's a lot more likely
- 3:13that this announcement was planned in the lead up to her
- 3:15album because she wants all of the press headlines in the next
- 3:19six weeks leading up to her album to be about her, to drum
- 3:23up buzz for the album as if she needs that.
- 3:25But I think that's part of the PR plan.
- 3:27But can I just say the fact that Taylor Swift is marrying a
- 3:32football player with a podcast is so like American ordinary?
- 3:39And I just feel like the Taylor Swift that I thought that I
- 3:43knew, not that I'm like super parasocial with her, but like,
- 3:46you know, the Taylor Swift that I feel like I was being served
- 3:49up pre Travis Kelsey era. I feel like she would be unwell
- 3:53hearing this. I don't know.
- 3:55What do you guys think? I was like, Oh my God, I can't
- 3:57believe this. I thought that this was like a
- 3:59rebound for her. I'm just surprised.
- 4:01But also, they're both 35. You know, if she wants to have
- 4:03kids soon. He obviously is very supportive
- 4:06of her and they do seem to love each other a lot.
- 4:09So like, I'm not shitting on it. I'm just surprised.
- 4:11OK, Let me know what you guys think about that.
- 4:13OK, The next story that I have for you guys, one of you guys on
- 4:16YouTube with the username Soggy Broccoli, which is so funny.
- 4:20Mention this in the comments section of our episode on
- 4:22Tuesday. So I had to drive right in.
- 4:25I was like, let's go. We are going full down the
- 4:28rabbit hole on this one and I'm so glad that I did.
- 4:30So we're going to be talking about this restaurant called
- 4:33Tallow in Philadelphia, how they've gone viral on Twitter
- 4:37for a failed attempt basically at like pity marketing.
- 4:40So this saga starts when Tallow Restaurant owner Abe tweeted
- 4:44from his restaurants account that his restaurant was
- 4:47struggling. He wrote.
- 4:48For the last seven months I've been doing all I can to make
- 4:50this restaurant successful. Maybe our food isn't good, but
- 4:53we bring in around $50.00 to $125 per day being open for 7 to
- 4:588 hours. He said he was $30,000 in debt
- 5:01and didn't know what to do. So initially people felt
- 5:03sympathy for him and his post went quite viral.
- 5:06But then users started looking into his business, his
- 5:10marketing. They started going to his
- 5:12restaurant to see it for themselves and the sentiment
- 5:16turned within like literally 24 hours.
- 5:19His thread has been deleted because of kind of the backlash
- 5:22and conversation around him. But in the initial thread, he
- 5:25was sharing some of his business values, which people felt like
- 5:28initially were red flags because they were very Maha adjacent,
- 5:32like make America healthy again, no seed oils, everything from
- 5:36scratch. And whether you are into that or
- 5:39not, people were also saying from like a marketing
- 5:42perspective, that doesn't really work in a city like
- 5:45Philadelphia. I don't know.
- 5:46I'm not American. I've never been to Philadelphia.
- 5:49But people were saying, OK, maybe this would work in, like,
- 5:51LA or, you know, one of those kind of cities that are more
- 5:54like health conscious and into, like, expensive, healthy,
- 5:56organic food. But like, Philly's not the place
- 5:58to open a restaurant like this. Then it was revealed that
- 6:01despite his restaurant being called Tallow, they actually
- 6:04don't serve any beef. They serve their fries, I guess,
- 6:09in beef tallow. Like they cook them in beef
- 6:11tallow, but they only serve chicken tenders.
- 6:14And it turns out as well that the restaurant is also not
- 6:17really a restaurant. It's just like a stand, like a
- 6:20food counter, like a fast food counter, I guess inside of a
- 6:23budget grocery store. Then the people who went to this
- 6:26restaurant were even more surprised when they arrived and
- 6:29they couldn't find it. And that's because the logo and
- 6:33branding, like the signage above the restaurant above the counter
- 6:37is from the old company, the old counter that used to serve food
- 6:42there. So it has like completely wrong
- 6:43branding and when you actually go up to the counter, you can
- 6:46see like the tallow logo and you can see their menu like
- 6:50underneath the awning of the old signage.
- 6:54So like they didn't even he didn't even take off the old
- 6:56signage. OK.
- 6:57Plus the grocery store that Tallow is inside of, right?
- 7:01So tallow is like a counter in this grocery store.
- 7:03That grocery store is inside of a Plaza and that Plaza has three
- 7:08other chicken tender like fast food chains that are apparently
- 7:12cheaper than tallow. Other issues that people found
- 7:15found was that the counter was only open from around 11:00 AM
- 7:18to 6:00 PM-ish. So like when it's peak
- 7:21dinnertime, they're closing. So all of these issues and there
- 7:25were others there were like random things with his website.
- 7:28All of these issues people were discovered by people on the
- 7:30Internet and they were brought up to the owner on Twitter as
- 7:34he's posting about the fact that he's like not doing well and
- 7:37that he can't figure it out why. And so then plot twist, crypto
- 7:42comes into the picture, OK, part of this red.
- 7:46He was basically saying like, I'm trying to change the fast
- 7:48food industry with healthy ingredients.
- 7:50Like no one's appreciating what I'm doing.
- 7:52I'm doing what people want. Like I'm giving them healthy
- 7:55fast food options. That's what people always say
- 7:57they want. Why is it not working anyways?
- 8:00And then he's like, if you want to support me and help me out,
- 8:03and he puts a link and he says, donate Bitcoin to me here.
- 8:10What? It's so bizarre to start with.
- 8:12But Bitcoin also goes up and down in value.
- 8:14Like, I don't know. That is not a stable way to
- 8:17collect donations if people are trying to help you.
- 8:19OK, So TikTok creator named Rinna, she did a breakdown of
- 8:23the situation on TikTok. And here is what she had to say
- 8:26about it. And I feel like it just
- 8:27encapsulates like the general sentiment of how people thought
- 8:31about this situation. Overall, this is just a huge
- 8:35wake up call and a huge spotlight on 2 huge problems
- 8:38with starting a business. The 1st is you cannot have the
- 8:44world's worst marketing ever and then when that doesn't work,
- 8:49inevitably switch up to pity marketing because the Internet
- 8:53is full of detectives. And they will find your
- 8:58business, your strategies, your reviews, your location, and tell
- 9:05you all those things you're doing wrong before they just
- 9:08succumb to your sob story. Second, you cannot base your
- 9:15entire business model off of a politicized fad.
- 9:20Just because these buzzwords around food fast foods like seed
- 9:24oils and processed foods and processed oils and beef tallow
- 9:27are a popular thing online does not translate to instant success
- 9:32in the real world. It really is a cautionary tale
- 9:34in pity marketing. Like, you better have all your
- 9:37ducks in a row before you take the Internet and tell them that,
- 9:40like something about your business or about your situation
- 9:43is unfair. Because as you know, Internet
- 9:46users, they will take that and they will poke as many holes in
- 9:49it as they can to prove that actually you're the one that's
- 9:51wrong. Anyways, despite this debacle,
- 9:53though, Abe has been tweeting and posting that they're selling
- 9:56out. People are like going to this
- 9:57store now, obviously to this counter, this beef tallow place
- 10:01that doesn't sell beef to check it out.
- 10:04So it's definitely getting him some traction, even though he's
- 10:07getting a lot of hate. OK, And the last word that I
- 10:09have for you guys, Mr. Beast has called out Rolling Stone
- 10:13Magazine for putting Caleb Herron ahead of him, comedian
- 10:18Caleb Herron ahead of him on the most influential creators list.
- 10:24So Rolling Stone has released its list of the 25 most
- 10:27influential creators of 2025. And Mr. Beast is not happy that
- 10:33he didn't make it higher on the list.
- 10:35He came in at #7 in a really crazy tweet after the list was
- 10:40released, he asked who he pissed off at the publication to have
- 10:44comedian Caleb Peron, who has significantly less followers
- 10:47than him, come in ahead of him at #6 So he tweeted a picture of
- 10:52Caleb. OK, Like the the card picture
- 10:55that they post in the article that says like Caleb peron #6 he
- 10:59posted a screenshot of that and he wrote, according to this
- 11:02list, a guy with 1,000,000 followers is more influential
- 11:06than me. What did I do to piss off The
- 11:08Rolling Stones? First of all, The Rolling Stones
- 11:11and Rolling Stone magazine are two different things.
- 11:14Mr. Beast Jimmy, OK, this is a huge mask slip moment for Mr.
- 11:20Beast because it proves everything that we have been
- 11:23saying on this podcast for years.
- 11:25When it comes to him, all he cares about is power.
- 11:28Like there is no creative or community building motivation
- 11:32behind his career. And like, in theory that's fine.
- 11:35Like I'm sure there's lots of creators, lots of influencers
- 11:38who are doing it for the money and the fame.
- 11:40They don't really care about like the creative outlet that
- 11:42content creation brings them or whatever it is.
- 11:45However, the difference with Mr. Beast is that he brands himself
- 11:49as this like altruistic change maker and he's using this power
- 11:53to exploit others. He is using it to exploit people
- 11:57for content, for his content so that he can make money.
- 12:01And then he has Beast philanthropy that he's able to
- 12:03say like, but no, look, I give back yeah, OK for content so
- 12:08that you can be like, look at me, pat myself on the back like
- 12:11I'm doing something good. He's rubbing elbows with all the
- 12:14billionaires and he's like just as exploitative in different
- 12:17ways. Getting the most followers and
- 12:20the most views does not translate to influence.
- 12:24Mr. Beast is not really that influential from an audience
- 12:28perspective beyond the like millions of 6 year olds that
- 12:32watch his videos passively while while they're like playing video
- 12:35games or whatever. Like that is who his target
- 12:37audience is. Like that is literally who
- 12:39watches Mr. Beast videos. I've said this so many times on
- 12:42the podcast, but I am certain that if I polled my friends who
- 12:45are not chronically online, a ton of them would say they do
- 12:49not know who Mr. Beast is despite him being one of the
- 12:53most followed creators on the entire Internet.
- 12:56And that is because he is just straight up not that influential
- 12:59with audiences. He has been influential in terms
- 13:02of, I guess the direction of youth content creation and like
- 13:06what was going viral on algorithms on YouTube and all of
- 13:09that. But like from an audience
- 13:11perspective, he has not really built any connection with his
- 13:14audience. He hasn't made a real impact on
- 13:17anyone outside of these like isolated charitable things that
- 13:20he does again for content. He has no purpose outside of
- 13:25being the most viral and virality is not influenced.
- 13:30It is so wild to me that after all of these years he still does
- 13:34not realize this. Mr. Beast wants power and he
- 13:38sees mass reach as his pathway to power and that is it.
- 13:43And no offense, Mr. Beast, but why is a straight man trying to
- 13:48be an influencer? Go build a house or something.
- 13:51Not for content. Don't film it for YouTube.
- 13:53Just go like do something else. Touch grass.
- 13:56Stop trying to be an influencer. Influencing is for the girls,
- 13:59the girls, the gays and the vase.
- 14:01Leave us alone. OK, that was a joke.
- 14:03Don't call me sexist, that was a joke.
- 14:06All right. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 14:08mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 14:10I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 14:12and subscribe and I will talk to you tomorrow for a Friday mini
- 14:16scroll. Bye.
