- 1:57Speaker 4: I'm not bad, Johnny, not bad. You kill me?
- 2:00Speaker 5: You have a fallen for the spill of the Yukon.
- 2:02Speaker 4: What are you trying to do? Sell me some mining stock? No,
- 2:05Speaker 4: but there's a mine.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I'd like to have you take a look at prop
- 2:07Speaker 3: of the Yukon.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Well, actually it's.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Across the border and Alaska. It's a gold mine.
- 2:12Speaker 5: A big one sitting on top of a rich vein.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Why don't you fly on out here let me tell.
- 2:17Speaker 4: You about it. Why not? Shall I bring my own
- 2:19Speaker 4: pick and shovel?
- 2:20Speaker 5: No, no, Johnny h just be sure you bring your gun.
- 2:32Speaker 3: While Bailey and the Exciting Adventures of the Man with
- 2:35Speaker 3: the Action Packed Expensive God, America's Fabulous freelance insurance investigator
- 2:39Speaker 3: of Yours, truly, Johnny Dollar, no act one of yours, Truly,
- 2:50Speaker 3: Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts of itted by a special investigator
- 3:08Speaker 3: Johnny Dollar to the Northwest Shorety Company, Seattle, Washington office
- 3:12Speaker 3: following us an account of expenses incurred during my investigation
- 3:15Speaker 3: of the Midnight Sun matter. I don't one one hundred
- 3:23Speaker 3: and sixty four to thirty five transportation to New York,
- 3:26Speaker 3: then a mainliner through Chicago to Seattle, the pilot gave
- 3:29Speaker 3: us a beautiful view of Mond Rainier and Puget Sound
- 3:31Speaker 3: before we sat down. And at four pm I was
- 3:33Speaker 3: in Bill Chadwick's office at Second Avenue in Yesler Way.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I'm glad to see you, Johnny. It's been a long time. Hi.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you sit out?
- 3:41Speaker 4: Okay?
- 3:42Speaker 3: How what was that crack over the phone about bringing
- 3:44Speaker 3: along a gun?
- 3:45Speaker 7: Hell?
- 3:46Speaker 4: The men who moil for gold.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Are a pretty tough bunch, Johnny. And sometimes it even
- 3:50Speaker 3: goes for the management of a big mining operation like what,
- 3:53Speaker 3: for instance, like Universal Consolidated Mining Corporation. Where's that It's
- 3:57Speaker 3: north and east of Fairbanks, Alaska, Yes, even north of
- 4:00Speaker 3: fort Yukon.
- 4:01Speaker 4: That means above the Arctic Circle.
- 4:03Speaker 3: And what's happened up there? The whole thing sits at
- 4:05Speaker 3: the foot of a big glacier. Oh, no problem. Until recently, now,
- 4:09Speaker 3: through some freak of nature, that glacier is changing its course.
- 4:12Speaker 4: No kidding.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And from the look of things, maybe a couple of months,
- 4:16Speaker 3: maybe a couple of years, or even ten years. Anyhow,
- 4:18Speaker 3: they seem to think that glacier is going to sweep
- 4:20Speaker 3: down over the mines, the town, everything I see, in
- 4:24Speaker 3: which case our company would have to pay for the
- 4:26Speaker 3: whole loss and all coverage policy. Huh yeah, and it's
- 4:30Speaker 3: occurred to me, Johnny. Suppose they've suddenly run out of
- 4:34Speaker 3: that rich vein they found up there. You mean it's
- 4:36Speaker 3: somehow they deliberately caused that glacier to destroy the whole operation.
- 4:41Speaker 4: It's a possibility, isn't it.
- 4:43Speaker 8: Oh?
- 4:43Speaker 4: Pretty far fetch one. If you asked me change the course.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Of a glacier, a few sticks of dynamite carefully place.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Come off at phil did you ever see a glacier?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, why should one that's been following the same path
- 4:54Speaker 3: for thousands of years suddenly decide the head for a
- 4:57Speaker 3: few million dollars worth of well insured property?
- 5:00Speaker 6: And look?
- 5:01Speaker 4: Go up there and take a look, will you? Okay,
- 5:03Speaker 4: how do I get there?
- 5:04Speaker 3: One of the company's planes is taking off from here
- 5:06Speaker 3: tomorrow morning. They have their own airplanes, Oh sure, a
- 5:08Speaker 3: lot of them, big two engine speedcraft transports.
- 5:11Speaker 4: How else do you think they get mendon supplies up there? Anyway?
- 5:14Speaker 4: You can go along with them? Okay, okay, why not?
- 5:19Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 5:19Speaker 3: Maybe I'll strike it rich, come back loaded with nuggets.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I am two thirty one bucks even for my room
- 5:32Speaker 3: at the Benjamin Franklin and the Night on the Town
- 5:35Speaker 3: the following morning, Well, I suppose I should have wondered
- 5:39Speaker 3: why a big cargo plane should take off from a
- 5:42Speaker 3: tiny airport far out of the town with only the pilot
- 5:45Speaker 3: and me on board. Yeah, I should have wondered, back too,
- 6:06Speaker 3: of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment, And.
- 6:10Speaker 7: Now for another episode in the life of Sergeant Donald Bellweather,
- 6:14Speaker 7: my husband.
- 6:25Speaker 8: Good morning, missus Bellweather.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Would my lady prefer.
- 6:28Speaker 6: To have her breakfast in bed this morning?
- 6:31Speaker 4: Oh? What a perfect husband.
- 6:33Speaker 9: Thank you, darling.
- 6:35Speaker 10: Ah, here's the tray with the coffee the toast, and
- 6:38Speaker 10: they aren't.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Oh fine, I forgot the orange juice.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Hold the tray, an, I'll be right back, shoo doing
- 6:46Speaker 3: what happened door in the corner of the dresser.
- 6:49Speaker 7: All the National Safety cover was right. Last night. I
- 6:54Speaker 7: read something in a National Safety Console pamphlet.
- 6:57Speaker 10: Oh, reaba, how can you sit there talking about a
- 7:00Speaker 10: pamphlet when I'm dying a slow.
- 7:02Speaker 8: Tortures not come over, darling, I'm sorry, all right.
- 7:09Speaker 10: Now, what's this about? The National Safety Council? Did they
- 7:13Speaker 10: predict that would stubbed my.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Toe this morning?
- 7:17Speaker 6: It's just a coincidence.
- 7:19Speaker 7: Only last night I read the statistics that proved that
- 7:22Speaker 7: more home accidents occur in the bedroom. Of all places,
- 7:25Speaker 7: em not the bathroom, or the kitchen or the home workshop.
- 7:28Speaker 4: The bedroom.
- 7:30Speaker 10: Okay, from now on, when I walk around the bedroom,
- 7:33Speaker 10: I'm gonna wear my combat.
- 7:34Speaker 8: Boots instead of these open toed chests.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Well, that might help, dear, But what everyone should be
- 7:39Speaker 7: most careful of is taking medicine in the darkness.
- 7:42Speaker 8: Okay, my living safety encyclopedia. I will now.
- 7:46Speaker 9: Fetch your orange, all your sweet And it's just too
- 7:50Speaker 9: bad that you nice men are so prone to accidents
- 7:53Speaker 9: in the home.
- 7:54Speaker 7: And the reason is because you brave men usually tackle
- 7:57Speaker 7: the hazardous jobs around the house.
- 7:59Speaker 10: I'll remember those kind words as I slowly limped back.
- 8:03Speaker 4: To the kitchen.
- 8:03Speaker 7: One thing in your favor, though, sarge. Married men stand
- 8:07Speaker 7: a better chance of avoiding fatal accidents in the home.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Is that a friend you know?
- 8:11Speaker 7: In one state, seventy five percent of the men involved
- 8:14Speaker 7: in home mishaps were unmarried.
- 8:16Speaker 8: Well, I'm sure glad I'm married.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Because the accident odds are better.
- 8:21Speaker 9: You know, because I like my wife even when she
- 8:26Speaker 9: first wakes up in the morning. That's my Donald, that's
- 8:30Speaker 9: my doll, and now act two of yours, truly. Johnny
- 8:46Speaker 9: Dollar and the Midnight Sun met her a few minutes
- 9:00Speaker 9: after I met him at the airport far east to town.
- 9:02Speaker 9: The next morning, Cliff Murray had the big twin engines
- 9:05Speaker 9: feedcraft airborne and we were heading north.
- 9:07Speaker 4: To a lassa. And in case you're interested, Dollar, you're
- 9:10Speaker 4: the cool pilot on this run. Oh are you kidding?
- 9:12Speaker 4: The only things I've stayed around the sky since the
- 9:14Speaker 4: war have been piper cubs, small jog You know nothing
- 9:18Speaker 4: when you get onto them. These babies are not only
- 9:20Speaker 4: just as easy to fly, but a whole lot safer. Yeah,
- 9:23Speaker 4: I want to take over for a while.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Well maybe later. Hey, how come you didn't take this
- 9:27Speaker 3: big ship off at this saddle to Come International Airport
- 9:30Speaker 3: because of the cargo we.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Have on board.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Also, it was quicker and easier to get clearance. We're
- 9:34Speaker 3: trying to make time on this trip. Boys up the
- 9:37Speaker 3: mine are pretty worried bunch these days.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Oh.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Why, that's a big glacier on one side of the
- 9:41Speaker 4: property flows down to make the Kanakai River. When it
- 9:45Speaker 4: gets warm enough a couple of months in the year
- 9:47Speaker 4: to melt so that there's been a couple of big
- 9:50Speaker 4: ice quakes this spring, just like earthquakes, only its ice.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Now that glacier is heading for the property, No kidding,
- 9:56Speaker 4: that's going to wipe out the airport, everything, unless they
- 9:59Speaker 4: can do something about it, like what to the course
- 10:03Speaker 4: of a glacier. The engineers up there say they can
- 10:05Speaker 4: do it, and we've got the stuff for them right here,
- 10:08Speaker 4: this cargo we're tooting. What do you mean quote, didn't
- 10:12Speaker 4: you know? No?
- 10:13Speaker 7: What?
- 10:14Speaker 4: Why we got enough TNT aboard to move a dozen glaciers?
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, speaking of sitting on a product keke and this
- 10:24Speaker 3: one had wings. But then after the first shock of
- 10:27Speaker 3: realization wore off.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Well. I even took up.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Cliffy on his offer to handle the controls for a while,
- 10:32Speaker 3: and he was right. A big plane behaved like a
- 10:34Speaker 3: doll by the time he reached anchorage to pick up
- 10:38Speaker 3: mailand food, where I was all set to make the
- 10:40Speaker 3: landing myself. However, with a cargo of TNT aboard, I
- 10:44Speaker 3: was perfectly content to let cliffs.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Set her down. What you did, beautiful.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Then within the hour we headed north again over some
- 10:49Speaker 3: of the wildest country I've ever seen.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Beautiful owd Johnny in its own way.
- 10:54Speaker 3: And I never realized there were so many lakes and
- 10:56Speaker 3: streams up in this country, Cliff.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Most of them are loaded with cash too. Yes, sir,
- 11:01Speaker 4: it's up.
- 11:01Speaker 8: Oh what is it?
- 11:05Speaker 4: I said?
- 11:06Speaker 3: The latest fishing in this man's world is right down there, blowes.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Oh watch your language, brother, I'll able to strap on
- 11:12Speaker 3: a chute and leave you to make the rest of
- 11:13Speaker 3: the trip along.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Fisherman. Huh, yeah, you aren't kidding. One of my favorite spots, right, Hey,
- 11:20Speaker 4: what's the marry Well? I think just a little twitch
- 11:23Speaker 4: in my side my belly. Doc said, was appendicida this
- 11:27Speaker 4: last time, but he didn't want to operate in this.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Holy baby, that was a shot. Won't Cliff anything I
- 11:33Speaker 4: can do?
- 11:34Speaker 3: No, it's going now, I sure, hope, so.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Sure, Sure, just came on kind of sudden. So hey,
- 11:44Speaker 4: it's time to call up glads at the mine to
- 11:46Speaker 4: be ready for us. How big is the airport up there?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Eleven thousand foot? Run me really sure? It's the only
- 11:53Speaker 4: way to get stuff in for mines one hundred miles
- 11:55Speaker 4: around speed draft two three one calling consolidated go ahead
- 12:00Speaker 4: plays with somebody on duty there at all times. Twenty
- 12:03Speaker 4: four go ahead, We're over Fairbanks.
- 12:07Speaker 3: On the hour, Charley, Roderick, Cliff over Fairbanks and fourteen
- 12:12Speaker 3: dollars and roll out the carpet.
- 12:14Speaker 4: We'll sit down between fourteen forty five and fifty Roderick,
- 12:19Speaker 4: We'll be ready for you. Yeah, and that's that and
- 12:23Speaker 4: that's an hour, Johnny. We quick, Johnny, Johnny, take over, charclip.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Never been this bad before. Now listen, Nope, you will say,
- 12:36Speaker 4: no matter what happens, take it, take it easy. I'll
- 12:42Speaker 4: tell you exactly what do you can do it? Johnny?
- 12:46Speaker 3: You can do it now, listen, three of yours, truly, Johnny.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Dollar, in a moment, with your permission, There's something I'd
- 13:07Speaker 4: like to talk about for a minute. You know, too
- 13:10Speaker 4: many times people try to escape from their responsibilities by
- 13:15Speaker 4: having someone else take them over. There was Miles Standish,
- 13:19Speaker 4: for example. He was much too busy to ask Priscilla
- 13:23Speaker 4: to marry him, so he sent John Alden to pop
- 13:26Speaker 4: the question for him. You know what happened. John ended
- 13:31Speaker 4: up marrying the girl himself. Of course, if John had
- 13:35Speaker 4: had a face like a flat tire instead of being
- 13:37Speaker 4: the handsome guy he was, maybe Miles Standish would have
- 13:41Speaker 4: married Priscilla instead. Well, actually, I don't know what got
- 13:46Speaker 4: me started on this subject, and unless it was my
- 13:49Speaker 4: thinking about people who represent somebody else. Take our State Department,
- 13:54Speaker 4: for example, being a representative is one of its biggest jobs.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Through the Foreign Service, it helps the Justice and Treasury
- 14:03Speaker 4: departments handle immigration, narcotic and quarantine problems, and the Secretaries
- 14:10Speaker 4: of Agriculture and Commerce look to the Secretary of State
- 14:14Speaker 4: to help keep their fingers on the pulse of foreign
- 14:18Speaker 4: markets so they can keep the business firms and farmers
- 14:21Speaker 4: of America informed on matters of import and exports. I
- 14:27Speaker 4: guess the only connection between these facts and the courtship
- 14:30Speaker 4: of Miles Standish is that, like John Olden, our State
- 14:34Speaker 4: Department speaks for itself and now act three of yours, truly,
- 14:40Speaker 4: Johnny Dollar and the Midnight Sun matter. The rest of
- 14:52Speaker 4: this report will have to come to you from the
- 14:54Speaker 4: records of the airport there at Universal Consolidated Mining Corporation,
- 14:57Speaker 4: far above the Arctic Circle, aboard the big car playing
- 15:00Speaker 4: a lot of with TNT, the pilot crippled with pain.
- 15:02Speaker 4: I was a little too busy to make notes di
- 15:04Speaker 4: scribble any fancy dialogue. Here, then, is the story as
- 15:07Speaker 4: recorded at the tower of the airport.
- 15:13Speaker 6: The time is till thirty five, all I goes.
- 15:20Speaker 3: The boss is playing to pick up his dog in
- 15:22Speaker 3: fad Banks. Charlie, Hey, Ball and Cliff, about do with
- 15:26Speaker 3: two three one?
- 15:27Speaker 2: And you said he'd sit down?
- 15:28Speaker 4: It mean Graham three one probably consolidated?
- 15:31Speaker 6: Is that, Cliffs?
- 15:32Speaker 4: Mean Graham j three one probably consolidated?
- 15:35Speaker 2: It doesn't sound like him.
- 15:36Speaker 6: Hello, Cliff, Hell, this is Johnny Dollar Dollar.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, it's just a passenger.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Go ahead, Johnny, Cliffs.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Look, I had to.
- 15:46Speaker 5: Take over for him.
- 15:46Speaker 4: He's sick, looks cripple. Give me whatever insturtions I need,
- 15:51Speaker 4: right you?
- 15:52Speaker 3: You sure you can make it, Johnny, Charlie, Julie, Cliff,
- 15:57Speaker 3: go ahead, Cliff, Johnny good week.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Well what about that that cargo that TNK? Can you
- 16:03Speaker 2: dump it?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Hey?
- 16:04Speaker 2: I can't dumping it.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Johnny can't leave.
- 16:08Speaker 3: The control Okay then, Johnny, Well, we'll give you all
- 16:11Speaker 3: the help we.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Can from here.
- 16:13Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Charlie.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Have you passed the Snake River marker in about two minutes?
- 16:19Speaker 4: I think you?
- 16:20Speaker 2: Okay?
- 16:21Speaker 3: Now, just remember your letdown is on a heading of
- 16:24Speaker 3: zero three five degrees from that marker.
- 16:27Speaker 5: They're all three five degrees from the snake rinder marker Roger.
- 16:30Speaker 4: And well, now just take it easy, Johnny.
- 16:33Speaker 2: We'll get you down here.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Okay, thanks, Charlie. All it looks like we may have
- 16:37Speaker 4: a problem on it.
- 16:37Speaker 6: And listen.
- 16:38Speaker 3: If Cliff says Dollar can bring it, Donny can just
- 16:41Speaker 3: you take it easy when you talk with it, Charlie.
- 16:51Speaker 3: If you get an engineer own there, yeah, yeah, sure, Johnny,
- 16:54Speaker 3: stand by, take a fall, Johnny.
- 16:57Speaker 6: This is Paul Foster.
- 16:58Speaker 7: Go ahead, Oh, make some trouble getting your landing gear down.
- 17:02Speaker 4: I'm gonna make some steep bakes and try to get
- 17:05Speaker 4: it down by a centrifical force. Yeah, I got you.
- 17:09Speaker 4: You might get the ground for the stand by, though,
- 17:12Speaker 4: because if we can't get the gear down that way,
- 17:14Speaker 4: I guess we'll have to make a belly landing gear up.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Okay, Johnny, I got that. How much fuel have you
- 17:19Speaker 3: got on board about?
- 17:24Speaker 2: Johnny? This is Charlie again.
- 17:25Speaker 4: No list easy?
- 17:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Johnny, I saw you make your pants.
- 17:31Speaker 3: It appears the landing gear door is partially open, which
- 17:35Speaker 3: may indicate it's jammed. Any agasions, Uh, Paul again, Johnny.
- 17:39Speaker 3: The only thing I can think of is try to
- 17:41Speaker 3: snap the gear out by a sharp pull up to
- 17:43Speaker 3: give it to centrifugal force.
- 17:47Speaker 6: All right, then, before we consider you coming in for.
- 17:49Speaker 3: A belly landing with all our TN t aboard, I'd
- 17:52Speaker 3: like to use up some of that fuel. Maybe some
- 17:54Speaker 3: of our brains down here can think of something that
- 17:55Speaker 3: will help you out. Okay, Okay, We'll go ahead with
- 17:58Speaker 3: the regular procedures and what where else we can think
- 18:01Speaker 3: of it.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Then I'll give you another call.
- 18:04Speaker 6: Okay, Johnny, the time is kill or do you want Johnny? Johnny,
- 18:18Speaker 6: this is Paul again. Have you tried to shear the
- 18:23Speaker 6: lock pin on that landing gear? Go ahead itim, No,
- 18:28Speaker 6: we haven't tried that yet.
- 18:29Speaker 3: We want to make sure the doors were not jammed
- 18:32Speaker 3: personally closed and perhaps making it possible to get all
- 18:35Speaker 3: the gear up again, you know, if we do have to.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Make a belly landing.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, Johnny, have you got full hydraulic pressure affirmative?
- 18:46Speaker 6: Okay?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Now, the crew chief isn't up here at the moment,
- 18:49Speaker 3: but I'll ask him to come up and he can
- 18:52Speaker 3: discuss it with you, Johnny. If it does become necessary
- 18:57Speaker 3: to make a belly landing because of the setup they
- 18:59Speaker 3: have for handling accidents, you might be better off to
- 19:02Speaker 3: do it at Fairbanks if you thought about that.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I talk and click here.
- 19:06Speaker 5: He doesn't think they want us to try.
- 19:08Speaker 4: It, whether it's we've got a board.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Well where radio to them and see Meanwhile, if anybody
- 19:15Speaker 3: comes up with any idea, ill, we'll pass it on to.
- 19:17Speaker 4: You right away.
- 19:18Speaker 6: Okay, okay. The time is.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Till fifty.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Johnny.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Don Wilkins, our chief engineer, would like to talk to you.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I'll put him on the horn, Johnny is Don Wilkins.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Have you tried the landing gear handle up and down
- 19:42Speaker 3: quite a few times to see if it extends any
- 19:44Speaker 3: further at any time? Here?
- 19:46Speaker 2: We've treated it several times.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Well, I think I'd tried as many times as possible, Johnny.
- 19:51Speaker 3: There could be something binding that may break loose. Now
- 19:54Speaker 3: there's something on it there. Well, it comes off the
- 19:58Speaker 3: gear door latches all right, so it is the latch.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I'll try it a few more times.
- 20:03Speaker 6: The time is three eight o'clock exactly, Johnny.
- 20:17Speaker 4: This is Paul.
- 20:18Speaker 6: How's your feel a situation stocking up? Now?
- 20:21Speaker 4: Oh you have that nine nine fifty five.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Well for your information, Fairbanks have advised that they can't
- 20:30Speaker 3: take your airplane there because they're jammed up and couldn't
- 20:32Speaker 3: play the field in time.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Oh yeah, okay, doesn't look like we like we have
- 20:37Speaker 4: enough gears to go over.
- 20:38Speaker 3: There anyway, Johnny, this is Don welcomes again. Right, if
- 20:43Speaker 3: you feather the number two engine and then just as
- 20:45Speaker 3: you unfeathered slamm the gear handled down, well, maybe the
- 20:49Speaker 3: additional torsion that you get may free to gear.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Okay, Don, we've already tried that.
- 20:54Speaker 3: We came out negative. Right.
- 20:55Speaker 5: I think we're stuck by that belly landing.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Johnny, this is Paul.
- 21:00Speaker 3: We'll get everything ready for you. Are you be at
- 21:03Speaker 3: far in this vicinity? You know under visual flight rules?
- 21:07Speaker 5: Yeah, defermative.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Johnny. There is one more thing we'd like to have
- 21:10Speaker 3: you try it, and that is completely unload your hydraulic
- 21:14Speaker 3: system and then try free falling your landing gear.
- 21:17Speaker 8: Did you get that?
- 21:18Speaker 4: I did that twice?
- 21:19Speaker 7: Done?
- 21:19Speaker 4: No luck with it? Go try it again, all right, Johnny.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Fine, the time is three twenty eight.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Johnny, we're going ahead with preparations for a belly landing
- 21:35Speaker 3: down here. I see you buzz the field a couple
- 21:37Speaker 3: of times, so you know how much room you've got?
- 21:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it looks like much you're up here. Now listen.
- 21:42Speaker 6: We're gonna foam the runway for you. You let me
- 21:45Speaker 6: put foam on it.
- 21:46Speaker 3: We're doing it now and that'll kill some of the friction,
- 21:49Speaker 3: and if we can get knough on it'll help against fire.
- 21:51Speaker 6: If you have any trouble.
- 21:53Speaker 2: That's the window there.
- 21:55Speaker 6: It sucked about three miles an hour. Just light braize.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Why was the dog if this thing shlines.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Up at one side of the other, right, I don't
- 22:03Speaker 4: want to run down any of the other airplanes.
- 22:05Speaker 5: I can fee down there, how.
- 22:06Speaker 4: If we can help it?
- 22:07Speaker 3: Okay, Johnny, take a run directly over the run way
- 22:10Speaker 3: and get the.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Feel of it.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Go do.
- 22:13Speaker 1: The time is.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Three thirty one, Johnny.
- 22:20Speaker 3: We don't want to see him in the position here
- 22:22Speaker 3: of telling you all your business, but I guess we've
- 22:24Speaker 3: got to try everything anyone can think of.
- 22:27Speaker 4: You go ahead on this gear handle business up and down.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Throw it in the up position and just leave it
- 22:33Speaker 3: there for a second.
- 22:34Speaker 6: And then slam it down.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I'll leave it down for oh.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Say, thirty seconds after you put it down.
- 22:40Speaker 6: You get that, okay, we'll do that.
- 22:43Speaker 8: Well.
- 22:43Speaker 3: We hate to be giving you all this intelligence all
- 22:45Speaker 3: the time, but if anybody gets an idea, we pass
- 22:47Speaker 3: it on.
- 22:48Speaker 4: To you for what it's worth. But you've got to
- 22:50Speaker 4: be the judge. Where glad with us?
- 22:54Speaker 6: The time is.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Three forty six, Johnny, how's your fuel? Now? I wouldn't
- 23:04Speaker 4: make it a much longer. All right.
- 23:07Speaker 3: They're laying foam on the runway like crazy, but that
- 23:09Speaker 3: poem is only going to last about twenty five minutes now,
- 23:12Speaker 3: assuming they started laying the foam at thirty.
- 23:14Speaker 4: You should land not later than fifty five. Yeah. Well, okay,
- 23:18Speaker 4: you give us the word. When it's completed, we're going
- 23:21Speaker 4: to make one little past and take it good. Look
- 23:23Speaker 4: at everything they.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Will give it and land.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Okay, Roger, I got your remark.
- 23:29Speaker 6: The time is three fifty one.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Hi, Johnny, I just wondered how you are and how
- 23:45Speaker 3: things look to you.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Okay, you got a doctor stady by to take your cliff.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Sure, sure everything's ready for you.
- 23:53Speaker 3: One comment? Listen, do not repeat, Do not feather the
- 23:57Speaker 3: engines when you set down, okay, Johnny.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Okay, we're all said.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Don we're gonna make a practice plant over the field
- 24:06Speaker 4: prior to the fine landing.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Okay, Johnny, I won't be talking to you anymore. Paul,
- 24:10Speaker 3: will take over on your approach and get you down.
- 24:13Speaker 4: We have we're all sent for you when you arrived.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Good luck.
- 24:18Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, the time is three fifty four.
- 24:39Speaker 3: One minute forty eight seconds later we've made a wheels
- 24:42Speaker 3: up landing Cliff, the company doctor tells me has happened
- 24:46Speaker 3: to me was a complete success.
- 24:54Speaker 6: A hard bitten bunch of miners.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Did you say, listen those boys up in that lonely
- 24:59Speaker 3: outs to the sawt of the earth, and as we're
- 25:02Speaker 3: trying to pull something on your insurance company, while you
- 25:05Speaker 3: should have seen how just one good load of TNT
- 25:08Speaker 3: put that glacier back on its course. Yes, sir, I
- 25:12Speaker 3: hope the vein of gold never runs out for those boys.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Expense account total, including gifts for the lads who really
- 25:18Speaker 3: brought that plane down, six hundred dollars even, yours, truly,
- 25:23Speaker 3: Johnny Dowe, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar is starrying Bob Bailey
- 25:45Speaker 3: origin Nates in Hollywood and is produced and directed by
- 25:48Speaker 3: Jack Johnstone, who also wrote today's story. Heard in our
- 25:52Speaker 3: cast were Gene Tatum, Frank Nelson, Russell Porson, Barney Phillips,
- 25:55Speaker 3: Harry Bartel, and Force Lewis be sure to join us
- 25:59Speaker 3: next week, same time and stationed for another exciting story
- 26:02Speaker 3: of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 26:03Speaker 4: This is Roy Rolan speaking. Johnny Dollar has come to
- 26:44Speaker 4: you through the worldwide facilities of the United States Armed
- 26:47Speaker 4: Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 28:15Speaker 10: This is Andrew J.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
- 28:19Speaker 4: Man's Wife.
- 28:20Speaker 3: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time Radio.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 28:31Speaker 1: This was a very interesting, someone experimental episode. You definitely,
- 28:37Speaker 1: I definitely have to feel that the insurance company was
- 28:42Speaker 1: a little bit paranoid. We think that they're diverting in Iceberg.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Although I love the tone and tenor of Johnny's report
- 28:51Speaker 1: after the plane landed and they got the ten T set,
- 28:56Speaker 1: I only wish we'd had more of the story dramatized.
- 28:59Speaker 1: But still, the air traffic control scene was just very
- 29:03Speaker 1: well done, almost a documentary style of drag net sort
- 29:07Speaker 1: of story. So I enjoyed this one, and I hope
- 29:11Speaker 1: you did as well.
- 29:12Speaker 6: Well.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Now on to listener comments and feedback, and we have
- 29:17Speaker 1: an email from Allen who rites in Good morning, Adam.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I bought your app and started at the beginning a
- 29:25Speaker 1: few weeks ago. I started listening to number zero zero
- 29:30Speaker 1: six to two this morning, and I usually listened to
- 29:32Speaker 1: two to four episodes a day. I've probably got two
- 29:34Speaker 1: years of listening before I catch up, maybe more, and
- 29:38Speaker 1: I enjoy every episode. I like your comments, trivia and
- 29:41Speaker 1: background and don't consider them I do, which he kindly
- 29:48Speaker 1: attached the definition which Marion Webster defines as foolish and
- 29:54Speaker 1: unnecessary talk. He writes, lots of us use the phrase
- 29:59Speaker 1: without fur other I do, and you do frequently near
- 30:01Speaker 1: the end of your opening comments, but your commentary is
- 30:04Speaker 1: usually pretty interesting. Well, thanks so much, Allan, And regarding
- 30:11Speaker 1: that part, I hope that by the time you get
- 30:14Speaker 1: to this episode and hear that that you've heard some
- 30:17Speaker 1: definite progress in confidence. Way back in episode sixty two
- 30:24Speaker 1: that had to still be in two thousand and nine,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and I don't think I say that near as much.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Back in the early days, it really was a struggle
- 30:33Speaker 1: to get the balance right. And one thing I think,
- 30:36Speaker 1: even for about the first four years on the Drag
- 30:41Speaker 1: NAT podcast, I really struggled with getting that sort of
- 30:45Speaker 1: balanced because I'd have some episodes where I'd go five
- 30:48Speaker 1: or six minutes before we started the episode, and I
- 30:51Speaker 1: gathered from feedback that people didn't care for that, And actually,
- 30:56Speaker 1: I think that was the first comment I got when
- 30:59Speaker 1: I did my introductory pilot episode back in episode quadruple zero,
- 31:07Speaker 1: that I was going on too long at the beginning.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Now these days, usually I'm pretty succinct. I introduced the self,
- 31:14Speaker 1: the show, the advertising reminder, contact information, and usually we're
- 31:19Speaker 1: into the episode in a couple minutes or so. But
- 31:23Speaker 1: sometimes I'm introducing a new series or a new actor
- 31:29Speaker 1: or a change of network, explaining something going on. But
- 31:32Speaker 1: I think it's important before we get into the episode.
- 31:35Speaker 1: And I think when I was a bit earlier in
- 31:39Speaker 1: this series, a bit more self conscious about that sort
- 31:42Speaker 1: of thing, but I think I'm less so today, though
- 31:45Speaker 1: I do know there are some people because I occasionally
- 31:48Speaker 1: get emails with like, he's taking forever on this intro.
- 31:52Speaker 1: I just want to get into the show, But that's
- 31:55Speaker 1: just one of those things. I try and keep the
- 31:58Speaker 1: intro comments relatively short, particularly when we're not in a
- 32:01Speaker 1: listener support campaign. I'm more like I try to be
- 32:05Speaker 1: brief at the start most of the time, but if
- 32:08Speaker 1: you listen to this podcast, sometimes I feel there's a
- 32:10Speaker 1: cause for a little length to your opening comment, and
- 32:14Speaker 1: that's one of those things that comes with listening to
- 32:17Speaker 1: the series, and then he goes on to write, I
- 32:20Speaker 1: support you regularly through Johnny Dollar Air dot com. I
- 32:25Speaker 1: think I've bought twelve to fifteen airline tickets in the
- 32:30Speaker 1: last one to two years. I hope you get more
- 32:33Speaker 1: than a couple of bucks. Thanks for the old time
- 32:36Speaker 1: radio programs regards, Allen, Well, thanks so much on that.
- 32:42Speaker 1: On Johnny Dollar Air. I won't go into specifics. I
- 32:46Speaker 1: will say that it is behind listener support and app sales.
- 32:52Speaker 1: It's the third highest source of revenue for the show,
- 32:57Speaker 1: and last year, for the first time, we actually earned
- 33:01Speaker 1: enough from that to get a ten ninety nine. So
- 33:05Speaker 1: I do so while we have emphasizing listener support during
- 33:10Speaker 1: this campaign period, I definitely want to say thank you
- 33:12Speaker 1: to those who just you know, when you do plan
- 33:16Speaker 1: your travel plans, you just go through Johnny Dollar Air
- 33:19Speaker 1: dot com, which does link right through the price line.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Thank you so much for the email, and we also
- 33:25Speaker 1: have some comments over on Facebook. Tom says love this
- 33:30Speaker 1: show and Michelle and says can't get enough. Well, thanks
