Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / EP 47 - When Your Past Tries to Define You Again
Transcript
- 0:03Have you ever noticed how your past as a way of showing up
- 0:07right when you're trying to move forward?
- 0:10Not when you're stuck, not when you're repeating the same
- 0:14patterns. But the moment you decide that I
- 0:18don't want to live like this anymore, that's when it gets
- 0:21loud. Not loud in a shouting kind of
- 0:25way, but loud in a familiar way. A voice that sounds like a
- 0:31memory, A voice that sounds like truth.
- 0:35A voice that sounds like you. And it doesn't argue, it just
- 0:42reminds. You've been here before.
- 0:46You know how this goes. This is who you are.
- 0:51And if you're not careful, you don't question it.
- 0:55You disagree? Let that sit for a second.
- 1:09Welcome to Unmasked, where we take off the filters and we get
- 1:12real about faith, failure, and finding freedom.
- 1:16I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, a dad, veteran,
- 1:20author, and a man who's learned that God does his best work in
- 1:24the middle of our mess. Each episode we have honest
- 1:27conversations with people who have walked through addiction,
- 1:30pain or doubt, and with pastors, leaders, and everyday believers
- 1:35who are learning to live and lead authentically.
- 1:39So take a breath, pull up a chair, and let's get real.
- 1:43This is unmasked. I want to sit here for just a
- 1:51moment because there's a moment that most people try to rush
- 1:59past. That moment when you try to move
- 2:03forward, but something inside of you pulls you back.
- 2:09Because for most people, they don't actually stop and examine
- 2:13that moment. They feel it, and then they
- 2:17either ignore it or they give into it.
- 2:21But they don't sit in it. They don't ask where is this
- 2:26coming from? They don't ask why it feels so
- 2:30convincing. They just move on or they just
- 2:37stop all together. And I think there's something
- 2:41really important happening in that moment because that's not
- 2:46just a memory, that's your past trying to introduce you again.
- 2:55Your past doesn't usually come at you like an accusation.
- 3:00It doesn't show up and say you're a failure.
- 3:05It would be easier to reject it then.
- 3:08Instead, it shows up like a pattern.
- 3:11It connects dots. It reminds you of moments.
- 3:16It builds a case. Remember that time you tried
- 3:21this? Remember how that ended?
- 3:25Remember who you were back then. And slowly it shifts from memory
- 3:33to meaning, from what happened to who you are.
- 3:39And that shift is so subtle that you almost don't even notice it
- 3:43happening. See, there's a difference
- 3:47between remembering something and becoming it.
- 3:52But we blur that line all the time.
- 3:56We take something that we did and we wear it like something
- 4:00that we are. We take something that we went
- 4:03through and we build a label out of it.
- 4:08And then we carry that label forward into every new season,
- 4:13every new opportunity, every new step of obedience.
- 4:18So even when God is inviting us into something new, we're still
- 4:23introducing ourselves as someone old because that is where a lot
- 4:32of us are living. It feels true to us, and there's
- 4:43a reason why it's hard. It's because your past isn't
- 4:49lying about everything. And that's what makes it
- 4:53dangerous. It's rooted in real events, real
- 4:58decisions, real consequences, real struggles.
- 5:03And so when it speaks, it doesn't feel false.
- 5:08It feels accurate. And because it feels accurate,
- 5:12we assume it's authoritative. But there's a difference.
- 5:18Something can be accurate and still not have the right to
- 5:21define you. Let me say that again.
- 5:26Something can be accurate and still not have the right to
- 5:30define you. When it does try to define you,
- 5:37that is the moment that your past oversteps its boundaries.
- 5:43That is the moment that your past becomes dangerous.
- 5:48The moment it starts predicting your future is where it crosses
- 5:54the line. It's not just reminding you now
- 5:59of what happened, but it's telling you what will happen.
- 6:04It's saying things like you've always been like this.
- 6:07You'll probably fall again. This isn't going to last.
- 6:13And if you listen long enough, you start adjusting your life
- 6:16around that expectation. You stop taking risks.
- 6:22You stop stepping forward. You stop believing that change
- 6:27is actually possible. Not because you don't want to
- 6:31grow, but because you've already decided how the story ends.
- 6:41But how we start agreeing without realizing it.
- 6:48That's the hard part. Because we don't just hear
- 6:53thoughts, we repeat them. We reinforce them.
- 6:58Even. I've always struggled like this.
- 7:03This is just how I am. I'm not that kind of person.
- 7:08And we say these things casually, almost like we're just
- 7:16being honest. But over time, those statements
- 7:20become identity. They become the lens that we see
- 7:23everything through. They become the reason that we
- 7:28stop trying. And This is why real change
- 7:34feels uncomfortable. Not because it's hard, but
- 7:39because it challenges who you believe that you are.
- 7:45If you've lived under one name long enough, anything different
- 7:50feels unfamiliar. Even if it's better.
- 7:54Even if it's healthier, even if it is exactly what you have been
- 7:58praying for, it still feels off because it doesn't match the
- 8:06identity that your past has given you.
- 8:08And when something doesn't match your identity, you either reject
- 8:13it or you sabotage it. See, I don't want to.
- 8:20I don't want to rush this because I want you to think
- 8:26about your own life. Where have you experienced
- 8:31something good that started to happen and instead of fully
- 8:35stepping into it, you hesitated. You questioned it.
- 8:42You pulled back. Not because it was wrong, but
- 8:47because it didn't feel like you. That, my friends, is not random.
- 8:54That is your past trying to keep its name on you.
- 9:05See, you have to decide who actually gets to name you.
- 9:10This is where everything starts to shift.
- 9:15Because identity, it doesn't belong to your past.
- 9:20Identity belongs to God. And that's not a comforting
- 9:25idea. That's confrontation.
- 9:32Because if God gets to name you, then your past doesn't.
- 9:38And that means some of the things that you have been
- 9:40calling yourself, they don't get to stay.
- 9:44Even if they feel true, even if they have been there a long
- 9:49time, even if they make sense based on your history, they do
- 9:56not get the final word. God doesn't just ignore your
- 10:02past though. But he doesn't let it define you
- 10:07either. He sees it.
- 10:11He sees it all fully, clearly, without minimizing it.
- 10:19But when he speaks identity, He speaks from purpose, from
- 10:26intention, from who you are becoming, not just who you were.
- 10:33There's a verse in scripture that says if anyone is in
- 10:37Christ, they are a new creation, new creation.
- 10:46Not a slightly improved version, not a better managed version,
- 10:51new. And that is hard to accept,
- 10:56especially when the old voice is still right there, sounding so
- 11:01convincing. So we argue with God.
- 11:08Even when we hear it. We hesitate because trusting
- 11:15God's voice over our past requires letting go of something
- 11:20familiar and familiarity. Feel safe, even when it's
- 11:26limiting. So we argue quietly.
- 11:31But we argue. God says that you're redeemed.
- 11:37We think you don't understand what I've done.
- 11:41God says you're his. We think maybe someday.
- 11:47God says you're new. We think I don't feel new and we
- 11:55let how we feel override what he says.
- 12:05But the shift doesn't happen all at once.
- 12:09Most people don't think about that or talk about it.
- 12:16See, letting go of old identity. It's not a one time decision,
- 12:21it's a process. Because your past doesn't stop
- 12:26speaking overnight. It's going to keep showing up.
- 12:32It's going to keep trying to reintroduce you.
- 12:36And every time it does, you have a choice.
- 12:41Agree with it or question it. Return to it or move forward.
- 12:49Reinforce it or release it, and that choice shows up more often
- 12:57than you think. Living with a new identity is
- 13:02going to feel strange at first, trust me.
- 13:07Because you're not used to it. You're used to being introduced
- 13:13through your past, through your struggles, through your
- 13:19failures, through your addiction, through your
- 13:23patterns. And when you start letting go of
- 13:27those things, there's a gap. There's going to be a space
- 13:33where your old name, it doesn't fit anymore, but the new one
- 13:38hasn't fully settled in yet. And that space is going to feel
- 13:43uncomfortable. But it's in this space where
- 13:47transformation happens. Many people, they try to rush
- 13:53this stage because they they want to feel confident
- 13:59immediately. They want the new identity to
- 14:02feel natural right away. But my friends, it doesn't work
- 14:07like that. You have to learn it, grow into
- 14:12it, and practice it. And overtime, what once felt
- 14:18unfamiliar is going to start feeling like home.
- 14:25Your past can inform you, but it can't name you.
- 14:32This is a line I want you to remember.
- 14:34I'm going to say it again. Your past can inform you, but it
- 14:40can't rename you. It can teach you.
- 14:46It can shape your perspective. It can remind you what matters,
- 14:51but it does not have the authority to define who you are.
- 14:56That authority belongs to God and God alone.
- 15:00So here's your action step this week.
- 15:04The next time your past tries to introduce you, I want you to
- 15:08pause. Don't rush past it.
- 15:12Don't automatically agree with it.
- 15:15Just pause and ask this, is this my past speaking or is this who
- 15:22God says I am? And then sit with that.
- 15:28Don't rush the answer because that moment, that pause, that
- 15:33awareness is where everything starts to shift.
- 15:45Thanks for joining me today on Unmasked.
- 15:47If something in this episode spoke to you, don't let it stop
