- 0:16Speaker 1: a mysterious illness.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We were told he has Celiac disease clones disease.
- 0:21Speaker 3: His worried mother on a desperate search for answer.
- 0:24Speaker 4: He meant the world to her, and she was a
- 0:27Speaker 4: loving mother?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Or was she?
- 0:29Speaker 4: Nobody could really put that finger on what she was doing.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So soon sympathies turned to suspicions, and a doting mother
- 0:36Speaker 1: begins to look.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Like the devil.
- 0:38Speaker 5: What did that say to you? That she'd a war
- 0:40Speaker 5: inside the.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Case of Lacy's spears.
- 0:42Speaker 6: Something was poisoning this kid and somebody was putting it
- 0:45Speaker 6: in a system.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And what cops say happened behind a hospital door that
- 0:49Speaker 1: shocked everything?
- 0:51Speaker 3: What do you believe happened in that passing?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Then a boy's weekend on the water ends in a
- 0:57Speaker 1: horrible tragedy.
- 0:58Speaker 7: His last words were, oh my god.
- 1:00Speaker 1: In all American football star winds up in a life
- 1:03Speaker 1: vest in handcuffs.
- 1:05Speaker 7: It's like he's in a straight jacket.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Then sinks into the lake like a stone. Was it
- 1:10Speaker 1: an accident?
- 1:10Speaker 8: He didn't try to save my son's life.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Who does that? Who does that?
- 1:16Speaker 3: Right now?

- 1:30Speaker 3: We always do. Welcome to Crime Watch Daily, everyone. I
- 1:37Speaker 3: Chris Hansen.
- 1:38Speaker 1: First up, my all new investigation into the blockbuster case
- 1:41Speaker 1: of Lazy Spears. It all starts when the Kentucky mother
- 1:44Speaker 1: sets off on a desperate journey to find a cure
- 1:47Speaker 1: for her son's unexplained illnesses.
- 1:49Speaker 3: But was she trying to help him get better or
- 1:51Speaker 3: was she the.
- 1:52Speaker 1: One making him so sick he would eventually die.
- 2:00Speaker 4: A young mother, he meant the world to her and
- 2:04Speaker 4: she was a loving mother.
- 2:05Speaker 9: A sick child, he's curled up in a ball in
- 2:08Speaker 9: tremendous amount of pain. But was it an unexplained illness
- 2:13Speaker 9: there were red flags obviously, or.
- 2:15Speaker 3: A prolonged torture.
- 2:17Speaker 5: It's something that will haunt me.
- 2:21Speaker 3: All leading to this horrific discovery.
- 2:24Speaker 10: We actually had to watch a video of five year
- 2:27Speaker 10: old child being murdered.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Lacey Spears grew up in Decatur, Alabama, and this all
- 2:35Speaker 1: American girl loved American girl dolls.
- 2:38Speaker 4: And she would live through them. She would have them everywhere,
- 2:42Speaker 4: she would clothe them, and it was kind of more
- 2:44Speaker 4: than the usual little girl and dough for Lacey. It
- 2:48Speaker 4: seemed to be a much bigger thing.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Soon, Lacey's love of dolls grew into a profound love
- 2:53Speaker 1: for real children too.
- 2:55Speaker 4: She wasn't wanted to be looking after children, and when
- 2:58Speaker 4: she left school, she went into oldcare. And when she
- 3:02Speaker 4: started taking care of children, people would notice how much
- 3:05Speaker 4: more time she would spend with the children and everyone else.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Right away, Lacey wanted children of her own, and her
- 3:13Speaker 1: dreams came true when she got pregnant and gave birth
- 3:16Speaker 1: to a beautiful little boy she named Garnett. But motherhood
- 3:20Speaker 1: get off to a rocky start when it just nine
- 3:22Speaker 1: days old, Garnet became so ill that he had to
- 3:25Speaker 1: be hospitalized.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Within days, she was taking him to hospital and complaining
- 3:30Speaker 4: that he wasn't eating and he was failing to thrive,
- 3:34Speaker 4: and he was getting all these infections and everything.
- 3:38Speaker 1: This will be just one of dozens of trips they
- 3:40Speaker 1: will make to the doctor to address Garnett's growing list
- 3:43Speaker 1: of mysterious health issues.
- 3:45Speaker 4: The doctors were baffled by the various things that you know.
- 3:50Speaker 4: She had Crone's disease. She said Garnet had many other
- 3:55Speaker 4: diseases which were inexplicable.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Most notably Lazy told that Garnett would not eat.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Then this unusual request.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Well, he had a feeding tube at one point that
- 4:07Speaker 4: was put in about when he was eight months old.
- 4:10Speaker 4: She asked to have a feeding tube put in because
- 4:13Speaker 4: she said he was a failure to thrive child. She
- 4:16Speaker 4: went to various doctors and hospitals. Many of them were
- 4:19Speaker 4: very hesitant to put a feeding tube in, but eventually
- 4:22Speaker 4: she found one doctor that did.
- 4:24Speaker 3: But Lacey didn't stop. There were her son's surgeries.
- 4:27Speaker 4: And he also had another procedure to close up his
- 4:30Speaker 4: throat so he couldn't regaint or be sick.
- 4:33Speaker 3: That's right.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Now, Garnet will be fed through a tube and is
- 4:36Speaker 1: no longer able to throw up. His little body is
- 4:39Speaker 1: forced to ingest everything his mother is feeding him.
- 4:43Speaker 4: She wanted to be able to control what he ate.
- 4:46Speaker 4: She would say, in fact, that she wanted to protect
- 4:49Speaker 4: him because he just couldn't eat many foods that everyone
- 4:52Speaker 4: else can eat. So she wanted to protect him and
- 4:55Speaker 4: give him juices and fresh you know, vegetables and things
- 4:59Speaker 4: like that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: In from Garnett's daily diet to his frequent hospital visits.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It was all documented on Lacey's multiple social media websites.
- 5:09Speaker 5: It appeared that this.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Growing online community is where this young single mom turned
- 5:14Speaker 1: for support, comfort, and sympathy. Lacey even kept a detailed
- 5:20Speaker 1: blog called Garnett's Journey, as seen here. In one update,
- 5:24Speaker 1: she wrote, September, what a month and it's only half over.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Garnett has enjoyed driving his tractor through our neighborhood, playing
- 5:32Speaker 1: in the rain, riding his bike for hours, and we
- 5:34Speaker 1: spent a few days in the hospital. And despite Garnett's
- 5:37Speaker 1: laundry list of medical treatments, was Garnett.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Actually a sick kid?
- 5:42Speaker 4: According to Lacey, he was a very sick kid. Everybody
- 5:46Speaker 4: else never saw any of that. You know, Lacey would say,
- 5:49Speaker 4: he wouldn't eat. He was a failure to thrive child.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Now, Garnett has visited twenty different medical facilities, but Lacey
- 5:57Speaker 1: claims there is still no relief for.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Her little boy.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Appearing desperate for a cure, Lacy and her son moved
- 6:06Speaker 1: to Florida. There she discovers a possible solution for her
- 6:10Speaker 1: son's medical needs.
- 6:11Speaker 10: When Lacey said she wanted to change her son's diet
- 6:14Speaker 10: over to a holistic diet, she was introduced to some
- 6:18Speaker 10: people that said, you know, this is a place where
- 6:21Speaker 10: the where they live fits the diet that we think
- 6:24Speaker 10: your son might thrive with.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Looking for the ultimate in holistic food, Lacy and Garnett
- 6:31Speaker 1: move again, this time to the secluded area of Chestnut Ridge,
- 6:34Speaker 1: New York, to a place called the Fellowship Community, where
- 6:38Speaker 1: the focus on sustainable living and a farm to table diet.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I mean she came into the Fellowship Community and she
- 6:45Speaker 4: told everyone about Garnet, the terrible illnesses he'd had over
- 6:50Speaker 4: his life. There were a lot of people that you
- 6:52Speaker 4: were convinced that Lacey was a great mother. You know,
- 6:55Speaker 4: she looked after Garnet.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Lacy and Garnett are well him with open arms. Garnett,
- 7:02Speaker 1: now a lively and happy little five year old boy,
- 7:05Speaker 1: begins to make friends and hang out with other families.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Then the honest thing starts to happen.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Whenever he'd be with other you know, friends, or they
- 7:14Speaker 4: take him to the local diner and he'd wolf as
- 7:17Speaker 4: much as he could. He always asked for seconds or thirds.
- 7:20Speaker 3: He was hungry.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Yeah, he was hungry, and by many accounts, a normal kid.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah he had a very very healthy appetite, according to
- 7:28Speaker 4: many of the friends that you used to see him,
- 7:31Speaker 4: But Lacey would say he never ate.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Eyebrows begin to rise. Lacey's new neighbors aren't seeing any
- 7:38Speaker 1: of the signs of the sick child she's chatted about
- 7:41Speaker 1: all these years on her social media accounts, But their
- 7:44Speaker 1: suspicion turns to sympathy when Lady shares some devastating news.
- 7:49Speaker 9: You know. Initially she had told me that her fiance,
- 7:51Speaker 9: the baby's father, Blake, had perished. He was a former
- 7:55Speaker 9: policeman who was killed in a tragic car accident.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Blake's death appeared to be heartbreaking for Lacey, as seen
- 8:02Speaker 1: on our blog post. Lacey wrote November celebrated Garnett's first
- 8:06Speaker 1: Thanksgiving home in our first without Daddy Blake, and then
- 8:11Speaker 1: this solemn post December, Christmas, Gee's first spent at home.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Our home was quite still and simple. Christmas wasn't Christmas
- 8:19Speaker 1: without Daddy Blake. As the community of Chestnut Ridge rallies around,
- 8:24Speaker 1: Lacey knew question surface about their new neighbor and her ailing.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Son, and there was certain suspicions that something was going on,
- 8:32Speaker 4: but nobody could really put their finger on what she
- 8:34Speaker 4: was doing.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Up next, Garnett's appetite appears to be growing stronger.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Everything What did that say to you? Does she's a liar?
- 8:44Speaker 1: And this shocker about his dad's death, Daddy Blake Daddy Blake,
- 8:52Speaker 1: five year old Garnett had been battling unexplained health problems
- 8:55Speaker 1: all his life. A finder, his mom, Lacey Spears wrote
- 8:58Speaker 1: about on her blog, But the little boy lay dying
- 9:01Speaker 1: in the hospital. Police would suddenly realize something odd about
- 9:04Speaker 1: his illnesses, and what they found inside his mom's home
- 9:07Speaker 1: would shock everyone. Young mother Lacey Spears has been searching
- 9:12Speaker 1: for answers for a chronically sick five year old son, Garnett,
- 9:18Speaker 1: now living in the tight knit area of Chestnut Ridge,
- 9:20Speaker 1: New York.
- 9:21Speaker 3: People in the community become suspicious.
- 9:24Speaker 4: She told everyone about Garnett, the terrible illnesses he'd had
- 9:29Speaker 4: over his life, how he was a failus thrived child
- 9:32Speaker 4: who had all these various diseases and couldn't meet They
- 9:35Speaker 4: take him out to a diner and they'd see him meet,
- 9:38Speaker 4: you know, double portions or whatever, and things started not
- 9:42Speaker 4: to add up.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But Lacey is adamant that something is very wrong with
- 9:46Speaker 1: her son's health, and on one afternoon, following symptoms of
- 9:49Speaker 1: a high fever, severe headache, and convulsions, Lacey rushes Garnett
- 9:54Speaker 1: to the hospital.
- 9:55Speaker 3: It's Friday. When they check in, the.
- 9:58Speaker 10: Mother complained that he was having seizure. They hooked them
- 10:01Speaker 10: up to an EG the first day, there is no seizure.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And no seizure activity on Saturday or Sunday. According to
- 10:09Speaker 1: the medical staff, five year old Garnett is the picture
- 10:12Speaker 1: of health.
- 10:13Speaker 10: Sunday morning comes, the nurse comes in with some great
- 10:16Speaker 10: news for Lacey that Garnett had no seizure activity. He
- 10:20Speaker 10: most likely would be going home.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Then, just moments after the nurses and doctors leave Garnett's
- 10:26Speaker 1: hospital room.
- 10:26Speaker 2: A young boy who's bouncing in the bed for one
- 10:29Speaker 2: moment and within ten minutes deathly ill.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Lacey gives a play by play on her Facebook page with.
- 10:37Speaker 3: This post please please send g some love.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Went from fine to really sick in minutes, then a
- 10:45Speaker 1: tragic turn for the worse that no one's all coming.
- 10:48Speaker 9: Essentially, the child was brain dead.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Again, Lacey takes to Facebook. My sweet baby Garnett has
- 10:57Speaker 1: been declared brain dead. It can't even be possible. That's
- 11:00Speaker 1: my baby boy. I'm not ready to let him go.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Doctors treating Garnett can't find a medical explanation for his
- 11:09Speaker 1: current grave condition. Alarmed by the suspicious circumstances, they call
- 11:14Speaker 1: the police.
- 11:15Speaker 9: The only information that I received from my supervisor was
- 11:18Speaker 9: that there was a child that was apparently on life
- 11:21Speaker 9: support and there were some unusual circumstances surrounding the case.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Blood test show Garnett has a lethal amount of sodium
- 11:31Speaker 1: in a system.
- 11:32Speaker 3: But how in the world did it get there? Not naturally,
- 11:35Speaker 3: According to.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Doctors, something was poisoning this kid and somebody was putting
- 11:39Speaker 1: it in.
- 11:39Speaker 4: A system that's correct.
- 11:41Speaker 6: Who did you think that someone was?
- 11:43Speaker 9: Well? I mean, obviously the caregiver is the mother.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Right away, Lacy is interviewed by police.
- 11:51Speaker 9: No immediate flags. I wanted to hear her story. Her
- 11:55Speaker 9: story made sense, It made a lot of sense. She
- 11:58Speaker 9: spoke pretty well, She had a pretty good working knowledge
- 12:02Speaker 9: of hospital terms and illnesses. At that exact moment, I
- 12:07Speaker 9: had no reason not to believe what she was telling me.
- 12:10Speaker 1: According to investigators. They had to wonder if this was
- 12:14Speaker 1: simply a tragic story of a young mother who has
- 12:16Speaker 1: just lost her sick child. Detectives had to consider that
- 12:21Speaker 1: maybe the doctors got it wrong. During that same interview
- 12:25Speaker 1: with Detective Carfee, Lacy mentions the recent passing of Garnett's father, Blake.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Around this same time, Lacey's own father arrives at the hospital.
- 12:34Speaker 9: I introduced myself, shook his hand, told him who I was,
- 12:38Speaker 9: and I told him that I was very sorry about
- 12:40Speaker 9: the passing of Blake, Garnett's father. And he said to me,
- 12:44Speaker 9: who's Blake?
- 12:45Speaker 3: Daddy Blake?
- 12:46Speaker 6: Daddy Blake, who was not the father, who was not
- 12:49Speaker 6: the father who did not die in a tragedy accident.
- 12:52Speaker 3: No ends up.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Blake Robinson is alive and well and working as a
- 12:57Speaker 1: Morgan County Sheriff's deputy in Alabama.
- 13:01Speaker 6: Did he have any idea that Lacey was using pictures
- 13:04Speaker 6: of him or someone she claimed to be him, calling
- 13:09Speaker 6: him Daddy Blake, and she manufactured this entire story.
- 13:12Speaker 9: No, not until I called him.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Blake tells police.
- 13:16Speaker 1: He went out on a couple of dates with Lazy,
- 13:18Speaker 1: nothing serious or sexual.
- 13:20Speaker 4: For me.
- 13:21Speaker 9: That was the most the biggest bread flag if you will,
- 13:24Speaker 9: about Lacey's truthfulness.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Investigators wonder if she lied about Garnet's father, what else
- 13:31Speaker 1: might she be lying about. Police obtain a search warrant
- 13:36Speaker 1: for Lacey's apartment. When you executed the search for attor apartment,
- 13:41Speaker 1: what did you find?
- 13:43Speaker 10: When we walked in there was a open setting kind
- 13:48Speaker 10: of apartment. In the middle of it was a feeding
- 13:52Speaker 10: machine pump with what appeared to me to be breast
- 13:55Speaker 10: milk and a feeding bag.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And right next to the feeding bag.
- 14:00Speaker 10: And there was a small table off to the side.
- 14:03Speaker 10: It had all the medications that she had told us.
- 14:06Speaker 10: It was like seven eight medications that she told Detective
- 14:10Speaker 10: Carfee that she was currently giving her son lined up
- 14:13Speaker 10: on the table and in the middle of those was a.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Sea salt container.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Sea salt, Sea salt.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Please photograph the apartment. Then they receive a game changing
- 14:28Speaker 1: phone call. It's shocking information coming from Lacy's neighbor, Valerie Planchet.
- 14:35Speaker 10: Lacy had placed the phone call to her, and the
- 14:38Speaker 10: phone call was, can you go to my apartment, take
- 14:42Speaker 10: the feeding bag that's on the feeding machine, get rid
- 14:45Speaker 10: of it, and don't tell anybody.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Don't tell anybody.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Correct.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Detectives recover the feeding bag in a second bag from
- 14:54Speaker 1: the trash, but.
- 14:56Speaker 2: They were submitted to the Westchester County Lab for analysis
- 14:59Speaker 2: in an astronomical high level of sodium was found in
- 15:02Speaker 2: those backs.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Sodium correct, and he suffered sodium poisoning.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Correct.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Please collect one hundred and seventy items from Lacy's apartment
- 15:13Speaker 1: and question her again.
- 15:15Speaker 3: What was her demeanor?
- 15:17Speaker 10: She would come into the room crying, hysterical, put her
- 15:22Speaker 10: head down, and when we talked to her, she would
- 15:24Speaker 10: just look up. There'd be no tears.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Investigators start digging. They discover apparent paper trail from hell,
- 15:34Speaker 1: dozens of records from child protective services and doctor's offices
- 15:39Speaker 1: from Alabama and Florida. Detectives begin to see a pattern
- 15:44Speaker 1: of what they believed to be child abuse in one
- 15:47Speaker 1: of the rarest forms.
- 15:50Speaker 6: Had you heard of munchausens by proxy before this investigation?
- 15:53Speaker 9: Truthfully no, I've heard of caregivers harming children, but the
- 15:58Speaker 9: actual term no.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Investigators start to build their case, believing Lacey was poisoning
- 16:05Speaker 1: her son and then posting it all over social media
- 16:08Speaker 1: to grab attention and sympathy, though she and her lawyers
- 16:12Speaker 1: deny Spears sufferers from any mental health disorder. Lacey seems
- 16:17Speaker 1: to be the poster child for Munchausen by proxy.
- 16:20Speaker 3: But how did she get away with this for so long?
- 16:24Speaker 10: If someone were to catch on to her, or they
- 16:26Speaker 10: would try to investigate her, she'd move along. She knew
- 16:30Speaker 10: how to play the system. When Child Protect their service
- 16:33Speaker 10: in Alabama and Florida both.
- 16:35Speaker 5: Were investigating her, she would move along.
- 16:39Speaker 10: She knew when it was getting too hot for her
- 16:40Speaker 10: to be there, it was time to move.
- 16:44Speaker 3: But the bunk stops in New York. Now.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Investigators just need solid proof, more than just tainted feeding
- 16:51Speaker 1: bags and a canister of salt. If only comps could
- 16:58Speaker 1: catch Lacey red handed, perhaps they already have.
- 17:02Speaker 5: She goes, well, where's the video to that? I didn't
- 17:05Speaker 5: know there was a video?
- 17:06Speaker 3: Who knew?
- 17:06Speaker 5: I didn't know the machine was hooked up?
- 17:08Speaker 1: The video up next in unbelievable fine.
- 17:12Speaker 5: It's something that will haunt me.
- 17:17Speaker 1: The last few minutes of little Garnett's life. Frame by frame.
- 17:21Speaker 10: We actually had to watch a video of a five
- 17:24Speaker 10: year old child being murdered.
- 17:30Speaker 1: New York investigators suspect Lisa Spears has just killed her
- 17:33Speaker 1: own five year old son, the boy dying just hours
- 17:36Speaker 1: after doctors in this hospital gave him a clean bill
- 17:38Speaker 1: of health. Cops claimed Spears poisoned her son with lethal
- 17:42Speaker 1: levels of salt, and now they believe they have proof
- 17:46Speaker 1: actual videotape of the heartbreaking murder.
- 17:50Speaker 10: Doing an interview with Garnett's kindergarten teacher, who also happened
- 17:54Speaker 10: to be a nurse. We had talked to her several
- 17:56Speaker 10: times before, and on this one occasion, we were discussing
- 18:01Speaker 10: that things had happened in the hospital and she said
- 18:03Speaker 10: he was on an EEG and we said, yes, he was.
- 18:05Speaker 5: She goes, well, where's the video to that? I didn't
- 18:08Speaker 5: know there was a video?
- 18:09Speaker 4: Who knew?
- 18:09Speaker 5: I didn't know the machine was hooked up the video.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Yes, video, frame by frame the final moments of Garnett's life.
- 18:17Speaker 3: We want to warn you some of the images are graphic.
- 18:21Speaker 1: The video begins when Garnett checks in on Friday, and
- 18:24Speaker 1: it records through Sunday, when doctors and nurses tell Lacey
- 18:27Speaker 1: that Garnett is healthy enough to go home. After medical
- 18:31Speaker 1: personnel leave the room, Lacy appears to take Garnett to
- 18:34Speaker 1: the bathroom just outside of camera range, but when they
- 18:37Speaker 1: come back into frame.
- 18:39Speaker 10: When he came back out of that bathroom a few
- 18:42Speaker 10: seconds minutes, he turned into the most sick child, burying
- 18:48Speaker 10: his head into the bed, the pillow, turning, wretching. He
- 18:53Speaker 10: was trying to throw up, but we already know that
- 18:56Speaker 10: he couldn't throw up because at nine months old, he
- 18:59Speaker 10: had an operation that kept him from throwing up. It's
- 19:05Speaker 10: something that will haunt me. It was probably the worst
- 19:10Speaker 10: video we actually had to watch, a video of a five.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Year old child being murdered.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Lacey is arrested and charged with murder. You actually were.
- 19:22Speaker 6: They was the actual who arrested And what did she
- 19:26Speaker 6: say to you?
- 19:27Speaker 9: She didn't say anything. She was instructed not to say
- 19:31Speaker 9: a word by her attorney.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Lacey's defense team argued she didn't poison her son with salt.
- 19:36Speaker 9: I think that she felt in her heart she was
- 19:38Speaker 9: going to get away with this.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Really, yes, what made you think that?
- 19:42Speaker 9: I don't know. I don't know if it was something
- 19:43Speaker 9: her attorneys were telling her, but I think that she
- 19:45Speaker 9: thought she might be able to get away with this.
- 19:47Speaker 3: You were in the court room. I was describe Lacey's demeanor.
- 19:51Speaker 9: It was different each day. I think she looked a
- 19:57Speaker 9: little scared one time, she looked mad at other times,
- 20:04Speaker 9: and once or twice he cried a little bit.
- 20:09Speaker 1: But in court, prosecutors slowed down that video to show
- 20:12Speaker 1: what appears to be a feeding tube in some substance
- 20:15Speaker 1: in Lacy's hands when she returned from the bathroom with
- 20:18Speaker 1: her five year old son. Prosecutors claim that just off
- 20:21Speaker 1: camera in the bathroom, Lacey gave Garnett a lethal Joseph salt,
- 20:25Speaker 1: which moments land caused his brain to swell.
- 20:28Speaker 3: And ultimately killed him. But there's more.
- 20:31Speaker 1: The videotape evidence also shows Lacey on her phone doing
- 20:35Speaker 1: Google searches.
- 20:36Speaker 10: She had been on the phone laying in the bed,
- 20:38Speaker 10: and we observed that some of those searches were salt poisoning,
- 20:43Speaker 10: salt poison, salt.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Poisoning on the phone at the time.
- 20:47Speaker 5: On the phone.
- 20:48Speaker 10: We can connect the time of the phone to the
- 20:50Speaker 10: video and the search that she.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Was doing unimaginable while her precious little boy lies next
- 20:56Speaker 1: to her. Authorities say she's researching how to kill him.
- 21:00Speaker 4: He had a right to grow up and a right to.
- 21:03Speaker 11: Grow old, and she stole that from him.
- 21:07Speaker 10: She committed the ultimate betrayal that a mother can do.
- 21:10Speaker 9: She was supposed to love him, nurture him, care for him,
- 21:14Speaker 9: and protect him, and she did the complete opposite, and
- 21:17Speaker 9: she killed him.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Well, she spears, is found guilty of deprived, indifferent murder
- 21:22Speaker 1: of a child.
- 21:23Speaker 12: Instead of nurturing and protecting a beautiful child, you subjected
- 21:27Speaker 12: him to five.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Years of torment and pain. One does not have to
- 21:30Speaker 5: be a.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Psychologist to realize you suffer from a mental illness known
- 21:33Speaker 1: as Munchausen by proxy.
- 21:35Speaker 6: What does this video indicate to you?
- 21:38Speaker 4: Well? Watching it in quote it was quote tis too
- 21:41Speaker 4: many of the jur.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Is How important was that video in this case?
- 21:46Speaker 9: I think between the video and the and the amount
- 21:50Speaker 9: of salt found in the feeding bags for the or
- 21:54Speaker 9: the icing on the cake, if you will.
- 21:58Speaker 3: She's sentenced to twenty years to life in prison. Is
- 22:02Speaker 3: she a cold blooded killer?
- 22:05Speaker 5: I believe she is.
- 22:06Speaker 10: She sat in that hospital room when her child codd
- 22:10Speaker 10: and watched him die. She watched his life slip away
- 22:14Speaker 10: when there's a chance that if she would have stepped
- 22:16Speaker 10: up and told them what she did may have changed
- 22:19Speaker 10: the outcome.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Two more notes on this story.
- 22:27Speaker 1: When Garnett passed away, his real father, Chris Hill, was
- 22:30Speaker 1: devastated and posted this message in part on his Facebook page.
- 22:34Speaker 1: I cried for hours when I found this out, and
- 22:36Speaker 1: it will continue to hurt till the day I die.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And lastly, detectives say that during their six month investigation
- 22:43Speaker 1: they were deathly afraid that Lacy might be trying to
- 22:46Speaker 1: get pregnant again, that some of her online channer was
- 22:49Speaker 1: about trying to have another child. However, thankfully she was
- 22:52Speaker 1: arrested before that could happen. Coming up, a weekend of
- 22:57Speaker 1: fun on the leg turns tragic. A young man dies
- 23:00Speaker 1: while in police customer.
- 23:02Speaker 7: Because ham her handcuff from behind, so he had no mobility.
- 23:05Speaker 7: He's like he's in a straight check.
- 23:07Speaker 1: The officer claims it was an accident. Now a major
- 23:10Speaker 1: development could finally bring his family justice.
- 23:14Speaker 3: That's next.
- 23:16Speaker 1: What happens when the people you trust the most betray
- 23:19Speaker 1: that trust in the worst way. It's a scenario the
- 23:21Speaker 1: family of Brandon Ellingson know all too well. We first
- 23:25Speaker 1: brought you Brandon's story here on Crime Watch Daily. A
- 23:27Speaker 1: young man who was out having a good time in
- 23:29Speaker 1: the lake when things would take an unbelievably tragic turn. Well,
- 23:33Speaker 1: now there's been a huge development in the controversial case
- 23:37Speaker 1: High school friends back from college.
- 23:39Speaker 13: I think it was like the first weekend back he
- 23:41Speaker 13: came back from Arizona.
- 23:42Speaker 3: State reuniting for a carecree weekend of voting and beer.
- 23:48Speaker 13: I know I had worked that weekend and he's like, no,
- 23:50Speaker 13: I don't.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Yeah, the fun begins at their friend Brandon Ellingson's home on.
- 23:56Speaker 3: The Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.
- 23:59Speaker 11: So I mean to me, he told me, he's like,
- 24:01Speaker 11: I plan on going to the and with him, it
- 24:03Speaker 11: was like, I'm going on the lake this weekend, let's go.
- 24:06Speaker 1: But for Brandon, the weekend would take a dark turn,
- 24:11Speaker 1: for ending in a horrible tragedy and a stunning case
- 24:15Speaker 1: of possible criminal negligence.
- 24:17Speaker 11: Never in our minds were we expecting the situation that
- 24:21Speaker 11: had happened.
- 24:21Speaker 1: So our Andrea Isisam is following new dramatic details as
- 24:25Speaker 1: Brandon's friends and family are speaking out about the day
- 24:29Speaker 1: that would forever be etched in their memory. Brandon was
- 24:33Speaker 1: a strapping twenty year old All American college student, a
- 24:36Speaker 1: champion football player, and beloved son.
- 24:39Speaker 14: Being his mom continues to be your greatest joy.
- 24:42Speaker 8: Why, oh well, I was just blessed to have them
- 24:46Speaker 8: in my life. He was a wonderful kind They touched
- 24:52Speaker 8: so many people's lives. Well, he was here and I
- 24:55Speaker 8: got to be there for every moment of it. Yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 8: I don't remember.
- 25:00Speaker 3: My life without him.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Before it happened.
- 25:03Speaker 7: So anybody here had come in contact he that was
- 25:07Speaker 7: less fortunate than him. He was really kind too, So
- 25:10Speaker 7: I think that was probably the biggest thing.
- 25:13Speaker 14: You were honored to be his dad, Yes, very much.
- 25:15Speaker 7: So I was very lucky, but.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Luck was scarce.
- 25:19Speaker 1: On the day, Brandon and six friends headed to the
- 25:21Speaker 1: lake and spent the afternoon at Coconuts, a popular lakeside
- 25:25Speaker 1: barn Grew.
- 25:26Speaker 9: Tell us what happened that day.
- 25:28Speaker 8: Brandon was gonna be flying out pretty soon to Europe
- 25:31Speaker 8: to study abroad for the summer, so this was his
- 25:34Speaker 8: only opportunity to go to the lake. He'd been looking
- 25:37Speaker 8: forward to it, and he wanted everything to be perfect
- 25:39Speaker 8: for his friends. That day, he'd been out at a
- 25:43Speaker 8: restaurant that we went to all the time they were
- 25:45Speaker 8: in the pool, and they'd been out eating. They had
- 25:48Speaker 8: been playing sand volleyball.
- 25:51Speaker 14: Had you guys had a few beers?
- 25:52Speaker 5: Had that happened?
- 25:54Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:55Speaker 5: Yeah, we're I mean casually drinking like.
- 25:58Speaker 11: We're bleicheringly past out.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Nothing we ate.
- 26:02Speaker 11: I mean, our whole plan was to stay there all day.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Hang up.
- 26:06Speaker 5: It was a great, beautiful day.
- 26:08Speaker 1: So yet under the clear blue sky, trouble was looming
- 26:11Speaker 1: on the Picturesque Lake.
- 26:13Speaker 7: I'd been down there a week before, and I noticed
- 26:16Speaker 7: that the water patrols all over the place. It just
- 26:19Speaker 7: looked like they were looking to write up tickets and
- 26:21Speaker 7: that type of thing. Because I'd seen this a few
- 26:23Speaker 7: boats pull over. So anyway, when he was going down,
- 26:26Speaker 7: I let him know that he needed to really watch
- 26:28Speaker 7: out for that and be careful.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Sure enough, as the guys leave the bar with plans
- 26:34Speaker 1: for Brandon to operate the boat, Missouri Highway Patrol Officer
- 26:37Speaker 1: Anthony Pearcy, Zero's in friends believe Pearcy was just waiting
- 26:43Speaker 1: to pounce.
- 26:43Speaker 8: Tony Pearcy had spent the afternoon basically staking out this
- 26:47Speaker 8: place looking for somebody to pull over, and it.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Didn't take long.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Within minutes of leaving Coconuts with Brandon at the helm,
- 26:54Speaker 1: Cooper Piercy bust him on suspicion of boating while intoxicated.
- 26:58Speaker 11: He was the first person to see the when he
- 27:00Speaker 11: was behind this, and He's like ba. Can you guys
- 27:03Speaker 11: like be cooperative, sit down, behave Brandon.
- 27:06Speaker 13: Took charge when we got pulled over and told us
- 27:09Speaker 13: to just chill out because everything's gonna be fine.
- 27:13Speaker 3: No, it wasn't.
- 27:16Speaker 1: The officer quickly ushers Brand into the police boat. The
- 27:19Speaker 1: arrest can be seen here in a picture stamp by
- 27:22Speaker 1: one of Brandon's buddies. Trooper Pearcy first does a field
- 27:26Speaker 1: test that puts Brandon in handcuffs and throws a life
- 27:29Speaker 1: vest over his arms cuffed behind his back, But tragically
- 27:32Speaker 1: that life vest would soon become a cloak of death.
- 27:35Speaker 1: At this photo image, the last taken of Brandon alive.
- 27:39Speaker 14: You guys saw Anthony Pearcy put the life jacket on Brandon.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Yeah, describe that.
- 27:46Speaker 11: I mean, right from the get and go, it just
- 27:48Speaker 11: didn't look right. It was already strapped up. It's one
- 27:51Speaker 11: of those life jackets where you got to put your
- 27:53Speaker 11: arms to Yeah, it was definitely not on properly at all.
- 27:57Speaker 13: What's the point of even having a life jacket at
- 27:59Speaker 13: that point?
- 28:00Speaker 2: Like, it was so bizarre.
- 28:03Speaker 7: Those hands were handcuff from behind, so he had no mobility.
- 28:07Speaker 7: He's like he's in a straight jacket.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Brandon's friends, say Officer Pearcy then quickly speeds off with
- 28:13Speaker 1: Brandon in custody, leaving the other boys behind.
- 28:16Speaker 8: Lake of the Ozarks is a huge place, and he
- 28:19Speaker 8: didn't even ask if anybody really knew how to operate
- 28:22Speaker 8: the boat or how to get there. None of those
- 28:25Speaker 8: boys are from there, They didn't know the lake.
- 28:27Speaker 13: Luckily, one of our friends actually on the boat, and
- 28:30Speaker 13: he's comfortable at turning a boat. Our plan was to
- 28:33Speaker 13: follow him today's sud and it hadn't been thirty seconds
- 28:36Speaker 13: by the time we got all figured out situated, and
- 28:39Speaker 13: he was gone.
- 28:40Speaker 9: We had no idea where he.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Went out on the lake and out of sight.
- 28:44Speaker 1: A simple misdemeanor arrest was about to go tragically wrong.
- 28:49Speaker 1: While racing along the lake surface, Brandon is sitting in
- 28:52Speaker 1: the right front seat, his hands cuffed behind his back
- 28:55Speaker 1: and his feet off the deck. Then, according to Pearcy,
- 28:59Speaker 1: his patrol boat hit another boat's wait. He impacts so
- 29:02Speaker 1: strong Brandon flies overboard and Piercy radio's headquarters, saying, Brandon
- 29:08Speaker 1: may have jumped. I can't say one hundred percent for
- 29:10Speaker 1: sure if he did it on purpose or if it
- 29:11Speaker 1: was the way.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Now in the water.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Brandon's life vest slips off, floating to the surface, but
- 29:17Speaker 1: his hands are still cuffed behind his back and he's
- 29:21Speaker 1: sinking fast.
- 29:22Speaker 3: He just had no way to protect himself, and out
- 29:26Speaker 3: he went. He treaded water for three to four minutes.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Next tragedy on the lake.
- 29:33Speaker 8: I don't want this to happen to any other family.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Was it just an innocent accident? Brandon's family says, it's
- 29:40Speaker 1: a cover up.
- 29:41Speaker 8: You don't cover up if there's an accident, you just don't.
- 29:44Speaker 8: There were way too many people's hands in this that
- 29:47Speaker 8: did wrong.
- 29:51Speaker 1: One minute, Brandon Ellingson was out with his buddies having
- 29:54Speaker 1: fun while boating on the Lake of the Ozarks.
- 29:56Speaker 3: The next he was handcuffed in custody on.
- 29:58Speaker 1: A sheriff's boat heading to shore. But what happened next
- 30:02Speaker 1: was not only tragic. Many feel it's criminal. Andrea isisim
- 30:05Speaker 1: is back with our whole new investigation. Brandon Ellingson and
- 30:10Speaker 1: six buddies were out for a party filled reunion on
- 30:13Speaker 1: the Lake of the Ozarks, but shortly after they left
- 30:16Speaker 1: a local bar and grill, the fun came to a
- 30:19Speaker 1: crushing end.
- 30:21Speaker 8: Brandon knew that he had done wrong because he'd had
- 30:24Speaker 8: a drink and he was underage. He did not feel
- 30:27Speaker 8: like he was inebriated, according to his friends.
- 30:29Speaker 1: But Brandon is pulled over by trooper Anthony Pearcy for
- 30:33Speaker 1: voting while intoxicated.
- 30:35Speaker 11: Never in our minds were we expecting the situation that
- 30:39Speaker 11: had happened.
- 30:39Speaker 1: So Brandon's friends and family tell our Andrea Isisam that
- 30:42Speaker 1: it all began when Brandon is handcuffed with his hands
- 30:46Speaker 1: behind his back. Then the trooper slips a life vest
- 30:48Speaker 1: over him without looping.
- 30:50Speaker 3: His arms through.
- 30:51Speaker 1: A Short time later, his parents get the call no
- 30:54Speaker 1: one ever wants to hear.
- 30:57Speaker 9: How did you find out?
- 30:58Speaker 5: What happened?
- 31:00Speaker 8: Has been called me. It's out to dinner, and he
- 31:03Speaker 8: was in shock because he just said to me, Sherry,
- 31:06Speaker 8: Brandon's dead.
- 31:09Speaker 1: They soon learned the trooper was heading back to shore
- 31:12Speaker 1: when the boat hit awake, flowing Brandon overboard. The life
- 31:16Speaker 1: vest is over his cuffed arms, but it's of no use.
- 31:20Speaker 3: It slips right off. He sings toward the bottom of
- 31:22Speaker 3: the lake.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Brandon kicks and fights to keep his head above water,
- 31:26Speaker 1: but loses his battle and drowns.
- 31:29Speaker 8: I can't go to sleep at night, thinking that he
- 31:33Speaker 8: thought he was going to die and during mid day.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Since that terrible day, Brandon's family believes there has been
- 31:39Speaker 1: a cover up to protect Trooper Piercing. Now many discrepancies
- 31:43Speaker 1: have surfaced with allegations of a conspiracy within the Missouri
- 31:47Speaker 1: State Highway and Water Patrol.
- 31:49Speaker 15: I've never seen anything like this. It's unbelievable that they
- 31:53Speaker 15: would act this way. Most of the command's death, if
- 31:58Speaker 15: not all of them, have kids.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Sergt.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Randy Henry used to work this same beat, and in
- 32:02Speaker 1: fact was Trooper Pearcy's supervisor at one time. He bravely
- 32:06Speaker 1: came forward, risking his job to expose what he calls
- 32:09Speaker 1: a cover up in Brandon's death.
- 32:11Speaker 15: We killed Brandon Allison.
- 32:13Speaker 1: The alleged lies covering up the travesty of Brandon's death
- 32:16Speaker 1: start with this radio call from Pearcy to another officer
- 32:20Speaker 1: saying that he was driving the patrol Vote at a
- 32:22Speaker 1: safe speed.
- 32:24Speaker 12: I learned him go after brill Shops, but the Patrol
- 32:32Speaker 12: Vote GPS tells a different story.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Data reveals he hit speeds of up to forty six
- 32:38Speaker 1: miles an hour while Brandon was in custody and the.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Reason Piercey was speeding.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Sergeant Henry says he thinks it's because the more tickets.
- 32:46Speaker 3: The trooper writes, the better it looks on his record.
- 32:49Speaker 15: I think this is all about Tony Parricy trying to
- 32:53Speaker 15: make a name for himself so he can get promoted.
- 32:55Speaker 15: He told me he wanted to be in a position
- 32:57Speaker 15: and take my place when I retired, to be a sergeant.
- 33:00Speaker 15: Can you know, make himself a sergeant for he retires
- 33:02Speaker 15: for his retirement pay.
- 33:04Speaker 1: As the boat sped along Purece, he admits they hit
- 33:06Speaker 1: a wing, Brandon goes overboard, but when the trooper radios in,
- 33:11Speaker 1: he says Brandon may have jumped.
- 33:13Speaker 12: I can't say a hundred percent for sure if he
- 33:15Speaker 12: did it on purpose or if there was the way.
- 33:17Speaker 1: But Sergeant Henry says physical evidence on Brandon's body shows
- 33:21Speaker 1: he hit hard surfaces inside the boat, suggesting he was
- 33:24Speaker 1: thrown forward and ejected over the right side.
- 33:27Speaker 9: Of the boat.
- 33:28Speaker 15: Brandon he had bruising on his neck area that they tried,
- 33:32Speaker 15: saying in the corner's inquest that was caused by the
- 33:36Speaker 15: needle marks. They tried getting blood. The only problem with
- 33:38Speaker 15: that is dead people don't bruise.
- 33:40Speaker 1: And when Brandon hit the water, his life vest slipped
- 33:43Speaker 1: off with hands cuffed behind him.
- 33:45Speaker 3: He didn't stand a chance.
- 33:47Speaker 15: You're completely submissive to me.
- 33:50Speaker 3: I'm crapped in here.
- 33:51Speaker 5: There's no way in the.
- 33:52Speaker 14: World that can get out.
- 33:53Speaker 3: As soon as you hit the water.
- 33:55Speaker 15: Lat checker comes out.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Girls at a bachelor red party on a nearby barge
- 34:00Speaker 1: witnessed the whole event, reportedly pleading with Piercy to jump
- 34:04Speaker 1: in and save Brandon. Sergeant Henry says, those girls on
- 34:08Speaker 1: the party boat said the trooper waited more than four
- 34:10Speaker 1: minutes before jumping in to help.
- 34:12Speaker 15: They were stun and they watched Brandon Allens and drown.
- 34:16Speaker 15: They witness Brandon Allens would take his last breath of air.
- 34:19Speaker 7: You know, his last words were, oh my God, that
- 34:22Speaker 7: was his last words. And the girls in the party
- 34:24Speaker 7: barge boat said.
- 34:25Speaker 14: That, knowing that that he didn't try to save your
- 34:28Speaker 14: son's life.
- 34:30Speaker 8: He didn't try to save my son's life.
- 34:34Speaker 14: Who does that?
- 34:35Speaker 8: Who does that?
- 34:37Speaker 1: But what exactly Pearcy was thinking or doing when Brandon
- 34:41Speaker 1: was literally dying before his eyes is shrouded in mystery
- 34:45Speaker 1: because the camera cards installed to capture activity on the
- 34:48Speaker 1: boat are gone.
- 34:50Speaker 14: Those st cards that should have been in the cameras
- 34:52Speaker 14: to show the truth without a shadow.
- 34:55Speaker 9: Of a doubt.
- 34:56Speaker 5: Yeah, where do you think they are?
- 34:57Speaker 9: At the bottom of the lake.
- 34:58Speaker 1: And tragically, the bottom of the lake is where Brandon
- 35:01Speaker 1: was abandoned. Our Columbia Missouri affiliate Kmizie uncovered this sonar
- 35:06Speaker 1: photo where you can actually see his lifeless body Eatie
- 35:10Speaker 1: feet down. Moments later, you can hear Peercey complain the
- 35:14Speaker 1: incident left him worn out or he stared water with
- 35:17Speaker 1: the best for Roachoster spid.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Friend of Maraba.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Even more shocking, troopers reportedly told Brandon's friends he would
- 35:26Speaker 1: be held overnight in jail and they could get him
- 35:28Speaker 1: in the morning. Brandon had already been dead four hours,
- 35:32Speaker 1: and Missouri Highway and Water Patrol decided not to retrieve
- 35:35Speaker 1: his body until the next day. Then, in audio recording
- 35:40Speaker 1: reveals they callously joke about it over the radio.
