- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in an incredible
- 0:19portion of scripture in Isaiah chapter 6 all the way through
- 0:25Isaiah. Thus far these five chapters, we
- 0:28have seen Isaiah prophesying to the southern Kingdom of Judah
- 0:33that though they were God's people that He had brought out
- 0:36of Egypt, though they were the people that he had brought out
- 0:41through Abraham from Babylon, that they were not acting like
- 0:47God's people. God had given them His law and
- 0:50they had ignored it. He had given them prophets and
- 0:53they had rejected the message and made fun of the declarations
- 0:58of the prophets that God would be faithful to what He had said
- 1:02in Deuteronomy. That as Israel would reject, the
- 1:07Lord would reject His way. They would act like all of the
- 1:11other nations around them in idolatry and in their evil both
- 1:15towards God and towards each other.
- 1:17That God would send them back into the nations that they had
- 1:21come from. And in Isaiah 6, we take a
- 1:26little bit of a turn that instead of Isaiah preaching
- 1:29about everyone else, and you know justifiably what the
- 1:35southern Kingdom of Judah was doing, we now get our attention
- 1:38turned to the Lord Himself into what Isaiah's purpose was.
- 1:45Let's begin reading Isaiah chapter 6, verse #1 I'm going to
- 1:49go through, I believe, verse 7 today.
- 1:53And the next episode I'll take from verse 8 on Isaiah chapter
- 1:596. In the year that King Uzziah
- 2:02died, this was a king that was fairly good, that did some
- 2:07things that the Lord wanted, but he was also one that through his
- 2:13own pride, determined. OK, I can act like a Levite or
- 2:19like a priest, and so I can offer incense on the altar of
- 2:25the Lord, something that is absolutely prohibited for me as
- 2:30someone that is not from the tribe of Levi and one that is
- 2:33not part of the priesthood of Aaron's line.
- 2:37And so as a result of King Uzziah stepping in and trying to
- 2:43quote UN quote, worship God in a way that God had specifically
- 2:47forbidden and something that God did not command Uzziah to do,
- 2:51Uzziah was actually struck with leprosy.
- 2:55And so King Uzziah, fairly good king with some flaws, but in the
- 3:01year that he died, it says I, Isaiah saw the Lord seated on a
- 3:08high and lofty throne in the hem of his robe filled the temple.
- 3:13So here Isaiah has a picture of God's throne room, which if
- 3:19you'll recall from I think our time in Leviticus and as we went
- 3:24through Hebrews, that the Tabernacle 1st and then the
- 3:28temple later were modeled after what Moses saw in God's heavenly
- 3:36throne room. That even the temple and
- 3:38Tabernacle themselves were not just a religious place, but they
- 3:43were pictures of what God looks like as king.
- 3:48And so here, this is what Isaiah is seeing.
- 3:51And here just the hem of the robe of God fills this temple
- 3:58place. It says seraphim were standing
- 4:02above him. They each had six wings.
- 4:05With two they covered their faces, with two they covered
- 4:08their feet. And with two they flew.
- 4:11Here are these seraphim. These are throne room
- 4:15attendants. The the phrase seraph would be
- 4:19the burning ones. And so these would often be
- 4:22pictured in ancient, in ancient throne rooms and courts like
- 4:31snakes, snake like creatures with wings.
- 4:34And then they would also have some feet as well.
- 4:38So it doesn't fit super nicely into our category of snake.
- 4:42This is a spiritual being. And so even some of the words
- 4:46that are used to describe them are, I'll say, anthropomorphic,
- 4:52that it's describing a spiritual reality using physical terms.
- 4:58So it tells you something about what they are like.
- 5:02So here are the burning ones. Here they have these wings.
- 5:05And even though they are incredible spiritual beings with
- 5:10the ability to be able to fly, even they recognize in the
- 5:16presence of God who they are. We can see this in the following
- 5:21verse. In verse #3 So you have the
- 5:24seraphim circling the throne of God with their six wings, 2
- 5:29covering their face, 2 covering their feet with two.
- 5:31They're flying. And it says in verse 3.
- 5:33And one called to another holy, holy, holy is Yahweh of heaven's
- 5:38armies. His glory fills the whole earth.
- 5:42The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their
- 5:47voices, and the temple was filled with smoke.
- 5:51So here, even though there's these incredible beings that
- 5:55they are able to make the room shake with their voices, and
- 6:00though the entire space is filled with smoke as a result of
- 6:05what they are saying and what they are doing, their attention
- 6:09is not on even the beauty of the place.
- 6:13Their attention is not on the greatness of the spiritual
- 6:16beings. Their attention is on God.
- 6:19And they proclaim Him as holy, holy, holy.
- 6:24Many of you might have grown up singing the song holy, holy,
- 6:27holy. Or you might have sing, sang a
- 6:29number of the songs that have been written over the past, you
- 6:32know, even 30-40 years about the holiness of God.
- 6:35Or from this passage, or from the kind of parallel passage
- 6:39that we would read in Revelation 4:00 and 5:00, as the apostle
- 6:43John interacts with this same courtroom, with this same
- 6:47heavenly throne room, and continues to hear the Angel
- 6:50singing about the holiness of God.
- 6:54God's holiness is the fact that he is set apart, that he is
- 6:59totally unlike us. He is unique.
- 7:02He is perfect in every single way that He is, if you will.
- 7:08He's the quintessential definition.
- 7:11He is the perfect fulfillment of all of his attributes.
- 7:15That he is just, that he is love, that he is kind, that he
- 7:22is patient, that he is long-suffering towards us.
- 7:27All of this is encapsulated in that word holy.
- 7:31When we think holy, we often think of righteousness, right
- 7:35behavior that it's someone that isn't going to perhaps say an
- 7:39off color joke. There's someone that isn't going
- 7:42to just go along with the crowd, maybe participate in something
- 7:46that they shouldn't be participating in.
- 7:48We, we we think of a holy roller.
- 7:50That's not what is necessarily in mind when we think about the
- 7:54holiness of God. Certainly he is righteous and he
- 7:57is, He's not like part righteous, part just part love.
- 8:01He is fully love, fully righteousness, fully perfection
- 8:07in every single way. And so this prompts even the
- 8:10angels themselves, those that can shake the doorways of the
- 8:16heavenly throne room with their voices and with their
- 8:19proclamations. Their focus is God is better, He
- 8:23is greater, He is more transcendent than we could ever
- 8:28imagine. And they say holy, holy, holy is
- 8:31Yahweh of heaven's armies. So here, this is a a phrase that
- 8:36we've seen several times through Isaiah.
- 8:38We saw it many times in some of the other minor prophets as well
- 8:42that we've walked through. And this God is the one that
- 8:47will execute judgement and justice on Judah and on Israel,
- 8:52and as we'll see in the coming chapters, on the other nations
- 8:57all around the world. And what they say about this
- 9:02holy God who commands heaven's armies is that His glory fills
- 9:08the whole earth. And as I think about it, the sun
- 9:12and the moon, that light that reaches each corner of creation,
- 9:17that God created that and his glory is seen in that wonderful
- 9:21gift to mankind and to the animals.
- 9:25I think about his breath, the wind, if you will, the oxygen
- 9:31that we breathe each moment. Or you can think about even in
- 9:35the ocean that you have those creatures, that they are
- 9:38sustained by what God has given that he has made this place to
- 9:42be habitable. And so God's kindness to us is
- 9:46his glory that fills the entire earth.
- 9:49You cannot. I was just talking to a friend
- 9:51the other day and he was saying, man, when I look outside and I
- 9:56see the stars, when I look at the mountains, when I see the
- 10:01beauty of the grass and the flowers, I can't help but
- 10:05realize that God is there. He has created these things and
- 10:09He is good to us. And I think many of those things
- 10:13are encapsulated here in what the angels are saying, that to
- 10:17live on the earth is to experience some of God's glory,
- 10:21His goodness, His kindness, and His provision to us.
- 10:25So God is different, He is perfect, He is the judge, the
- 10:29one that commands the armies of angels, and His glory fills the
- 10:36whole earth. So what would be Isaiah's
- 10:40response to this? After all, he's been the
- 10:42spokesman for God and for God's way and God's mission on the
- 10:48earth. And so he could be rejoicing
- 10:52that though, as we read in the last chapter, though, there were
- 10:55scoffers who said, OK, well, yeah, what's this plan of the
- 10:58Holy One of Israel? You know, let him do it quickly.
- 11:01That way we can see what his plan really is.
- 11:04Because you're saying it's judgement.
- 11:06You're saying we're going to be in trouble.
- 11:08But we seem to be doing just fine.
- 11:10And so if you will put your money where your mouth is.
- 11:13And so Isaiah could have a response of, yes, I'm so excited
- 11:18for this. This is wonderful.
- 11:19This is everything that I've been looking forward to.
- 11:22But we see the way in verse #5 that Isaiah responds when he
- 11:27sees God. Verse #5 then I said, woe is me,
- 11:33for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live
- 11:39among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen
- 11:44the king Yahweh of heaven's armies.
- 11:50Isaiah noticed when he interacted with God, the same
- 11:53thing that we must notice when we interact with God and His
- 11:56Word, when we interact with the worship of God, when we
- 12:01encounter creation, what we are called to recognize is that we
- 12:07have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
- 12:10God is amazing and perfect and wonderful and we haven't been
- 12:15like Him. We haven't loved others the way
- 12:19that He has loved them or that He has loved us.
- 12:22We have not refrained from sin and evil.
- 12:27That is a slap in the face of God Almighty.
- 12:31And So what Isaiah says here, he says I am ruined.
- 12:35And he doesn't say because my people are evil.
- 12:40He says because I am a man of unclean lips.
- 12:44Even the prophet of God recognizes as he encounters God
- 12:49himself, he recognizes I am nothing.
- 12:53I am sinful in view of God's perfect holiness.
- 13:00You can think about it like this.
- 13:02If there was a wall that was painted perfectly white,
- 13:05whatever the most white color that you could paint is, and you
- 13:10were to then take a paintbrush with black paint on it, like the
- 13:15darkest paint you could find, and you were to draw a line with
- 13:20that black paint on that white wall, you would instantly tell
- 13:23the difference there. That is what it is.
- 13:26When we truly see who God is and who we are in comparison with
- 13:32him, far too often we compare ourselves with other people.
- 13:37And if you will, that's one very dark shade, 1 shade of black
- 13:43compared with another shade. And so you might not really be
- 13:46able to tell much of a difference.
- 13:48You might not say, oh, I'm not that bad because when I look at
- 13:52someone else, I don't say everything they say.
- 13:56I don't do everything they do. I don't use all the words that
- 13:59they use. And so I think I'm pretty good.
- 14:02But when you put us in comparison with the very
- 14:05definition of holiness and perfection, goodness,
- 14:08righteousness and love, we begin to see our glaring failure, so
- 14:14that even the priests and prophets, the preachers and
- 14:17theologians, the only conclusion we can come to is that we are
- 14:23flawed. We are people of unclean lips,
- 14:27and we live among a people of unclean lips.
- 14:30Here Isaiah doesn't just Suffice it to say, I am.
- 14:36I'm a problem in the holiness of God, he says.
- 14:39I have a problem and all of my people have a problem, and
- 14:44because I'm part of a nation, if God is holy and my nation is
- 14:48unholy, that is both my problem individually and our problem
- 14:53corporately, that we are in massive trouble.
- 14:57Though you are an individual, your city, your state and your
- 15:03nation are also something that you should consider that we
- 15:09ought to pursue good and righteous things within wherever
- 15:16our kind of sphere of influence is.
- 15:19Whether that's, you know, I'm here in Essex and so I want to
- 15:23make sure even coming up to like the midterms, coming up to some
- 15:29local officials, I want to do my part to encourage right
- 15:35behavior, right laws, good lawmakers that would not be like
- 15:39the ones that we have seen over the preceding chapters in
- 15:41Isaiah. But because I live in a
- 15:46particular people group, I don't want there to be the judgement
- 15:49of God on this people group. And so I'm going to pray and I I
- 15:55want to preach faithfully. But what Isaiah recognizes is
- 15:59even though he's been preaching the word of God, he is unclean
- 16:02and the people are unclean. This is why we would read that
- 16:06we need Jesus because even the very quote UN quote, best and
- 16:09brightest, the holiest people on earth when they they recognize
- 16:15who God is, they recognize their inadequacy and we go, man, we
- 16:19need help, we need salvation. This is what Isaiah has said.
- 16:24Woe is me, I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips.
- 16:28And then we can see in verse number six.
- 16:31Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a
- 16:34glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs.
- 16:39He touched my mouth with it and said, Now that this has touched
- 16:43your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned
- 16:48for. Here though Isaiah recognizes
- 16:52his wickedness in the sight of God, God makes a way that Isaiah
- 16:59can experience forgiveness, a removal of iniquity, and an
- 17:03atoning of his sin. Now certainly you could say, OK,
- 17:08well can't God just take all of the coals from this altar and
- 17:12just put it on everyone's lips and therefore everyone will be
- 17:15fine here. Certainly there's some poetic
- 17:18aspects to what is going on, but the important thing that we need
- 17:23to recognize it is only from Heaven's actions towards us that
- 17:29we can be forgiven. Isaiah did not experience a
- 17:33removal of iniquity through his preaching, through his keeping
- 17:37of the law, through his own personal holiness.
- 17:39It was only as from the altar atonement was made for him.
- 17:46And that altar there is not just the regular altar in Jerusalem
- 17:51that so much sin was taking place there in that temple at
- 17:53Jerusalem. Instead it just from the very
- 17:56altar of God, the same altar that we are told in Hebrews 10
- 17:59that Jesus presented his blood as the sacrifice in that place
- 18:04to atone for the sins of all that would call on Him to be
- 18:08their Savior and their Lord. And so it's only through the
- 18:11altar of Yahweh, only through the altar that Jesus placed his
- 18:15blood on, that we can experience forgiveness of sin.
- 18:18Can I ask you, what have you been trusting in to give you a
- 18:22right relationship with God? Have you been trusting in your
- 18:25good works, your attendance, your listening to Tabernacle
- 18:28talk, you reading of the Bible? Or have you placed your trust in
- 18:32the God who came down from heaven to earth, who died in our
- 18:36place, who shed his blood? And then, as we learned in
- 18:40Hebrews 9 and 10, He took that blood and placed it on the
- 18:44altar? And so we can experience this
- 18:47removal of our sin and atonement for our iniquity as a result of
- 18:52trusting in this God and what He has accomplished, not what we
- 18:57have accomplished. What a sobering thought that we
- 19:03find in just these 7 verses. God is holy, He is perfect, He's
- 19:09incredible, He is amazing. He overseas angels that are far
- 19:15beyond our comprehension, who are incredible in their own
- 19:19right, but they are nothing compared to Yahweh.
- 19:22They're nothing compared to Jesus, the Incarnate Word.
- 19:26And so as we see God and who he truly is, what he is capable of,
- 19:30how perfect He is in every way, our only response can be
- 19:35repentance, that we recognize our sin in light of a holy God.
- 19:39And we recognize that we can experience forgiveness as a
- 19:42result of heaven moving towards us, not as a result of us moving
- 19:48towards heaven. We'll pick back up next episode
- 19:51in verse #8 because when we are forgiven, when we have that
- 19:55relationship with God, it's going to prompt us to do some
- 20:00things. And we're going to see what it
- 20:01prompted Isaiah to do next time. Thanks for tuning in.
- 20:04Have a great day.
