Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Needed Effort to Resolve the Deformations of the Lower Vital Nature
Transcript
- 0:00In his application of yoga as applied psychology, Sri
- 0:05Aurobindo identifies a number of different planes and parts of
- 0:08the being that make up the human individual.
- 0:12There are various levels of mind, vital being, and physical
- 0:16being. Each level carries out specific
- 0:19types of functions and responds to specific vibrational patterns
- 0:25and is generally activated through the energy that flows
- 0:28through one of the subtle energy centers or chakras.
- 0:32The lower vital being is closely associated with the energy of
- 0:36the second chakra between the root chakra at the base of the
- 0:39spine and the naval centre. It is responsible for a wide
- 0:44variety of vital movements and responses in the being.
- 0:49In its normal human working it tends to hold a number of
- 0:52obscure and deformed energetic movements that eventually need
- 0:57to be taken up and transformed. As the yogic force penetrates
- 1:02ever deeper into the being, the lower vital handles the basic
- 1:07vital drives of the being close to the physical being and very
- 1:11much interconnected. Deformations of the lower vital
- 1:15include converting these drives into ego centered desired filled
- 1:21motivations which might include jealousy, envy, greed, gluttony,
- 1:28irritation and angry reactions et cetera.
- 1:32It is these deformations that keep the focus on the individual
- 1:36ego personality and which distort the true action of the
- 1:41energy that operates through the 2nd chakra, Sri Aurobindo
- 1:45writes. Quote The lower vital in most
- 1:49human beings is full of grave defects and of movements that
- 1:53respond to hostile forces. A constant psychic opening, a
- 1:58persistent rejection of these influences, a separation of
- 2:02oneself from all hostile suggestions, and the inflow of
- 2:07the calm, light, peace, purity of the Mother's power would
- 2:13eventually free the system from the siege.
- 2:17What is needed is to be quiet and more and more quiet.
- 2:22To look on these influences is something not yourself which has
- 2:25intruded to separate yourself from it and deny it, and to
- 2:30abide in a quiet confidence in the divine power.
- 2:35If your psychic being asks for the divine, and your mind is
- 2:39sincere and calls for liberation from the lower nature and from
- 2:44all hostile forces, and if you can call the Mother's power into
- 2:49your heart and rely upon it more than on your own strength, this
- 2:54siege will in the end be driven away from you, and strength and
- 2:58peace take its place. End Quote reference Sri
