- 0:00Speaker 1: We are just about to head beyond the bear of
- 0:02Speaker 1: a line. We used to head beyond the barra of
- 0:04Speaker 1: line every Thursday. We stopped for a little while because
- 0:07Speaker 1: we were sort of we were we're quite often here
- 0:09Speaker 1: from beyond the bear of my line. But I reckon
- 0:10Speaker 1: it's a good idea for us to make sure that
- 0:12Speaker 1: we are focusing beyond the bear of the line as
- 0:15Speaker 1: often as we can. And joining me on the line
- 0:17Speaker 1: right now is the member for Catherine, Joe Hersey. Good
- 0:20Speaker 1: morning to you, Joe.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Good morning Katie, and good morning listeners. Welcome beyond the
- 0:26Speaker 2: bear and Maline, Katie, I.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Bet Joe will we know we've got plenty of listeners
- 0:30Speaker 1: in Catherine as well, so it's good to catch up
- 0:33Speaker 1: with you and find out what's happening.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's absolutely busy as down here in Catherine at
- 0:40Speaker 2: the moment. You know, it's the dry season when all
- 0:42Speaker 2: the events are on and tourists around town, the caravan pass,
- 0:50Speaker 2: the fool, you know, the tourism operators having a having
- 0:54Speaker 2: a busy time. So it's great, it really is great
- 0:57Speaker 2: for the community.
- 0:58Speaker 1: That is good to hear and and Joe. Before I
- 1:01Speaker 1: get into some of the more serious stuff. I know
- 1:03Speaker 1: that even when it comes to the weather, well, yesterday
- 1:07Speaker 1: you guys were meant to get that dry surge a
- 1:09Speaker 1: little bit sooner than what we did. Has it been
- 1:11Speaker 1: good weather the last couple of days we did?
- 1:14Speaker 2: It kicked in last night, Katie, and it was fresh
- 1:17Speaker 2: this morning? Oh god, what could we even see what
- 1:20Speaker 2: temperature it was? But when I went out exercising early
- 1:24Speaker 2: this morning, it was fresh.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Did you need a jumper, Joe? I think that's did
- 1:27Speaker 1: you need a jumper? That's the important question.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Well, my daughter had a jumper on, but I didn't.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You probably could have had a light, a light jumper on.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But even now it is absolutely beautiful outside, and we've
- 1:42Speaker 2: actually got to have our office doors open. I'd just
- 1:44Speaker 2: like to tell the community of Catherine that the Benigo
- 1:46Speaker 2: Bank is back open again today. They've had wrapped in
- 1:49Speaker 2: their ceilings, so they actually had the closed yesterday. It
- 1:53Speaker 2: is future.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Oh no, what do you mean?
- 1:55Speaker 2: There was a smells coming that had rated sort of
- 1:58Speaker 2: died in their ceilings and so they couldn't even be
- 2:02Speaker 2: in there. I went in the Yes, it was dreadful.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So they ended up they ended up closing and the
- 2:09Speaker 2: smells coming to our office to we're right next door.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But yeah, as anyone knows, did rat it's discussing.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Oh the poor buggers. Well, hopefully that's all all sorted
- 2:21Speaker 1: and they're able to get back in there and yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 1: get back operating again.
- 2:25Speaker 2: They're back in there today, but the steatch is pretty bad.
- 2:30Speaker 2: But anyway, you know, they they can't even have their
- 2:34Speaker 2: doors open at least weekend.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Oh that's no good to hear any.
- 2:38Speaker 2: More important matters. Yeah, there's been a lot going on
- 2:41Speaker 2: in Catherine. Yeah, we've had the recently, we've had out
- 2:46Speaker 2: by two yearly by annual Museum Option dinner, which raised
- 2:53Speaker 2: over seventy seven thousand dollars for our beautiful little museum,
- 2:57Speaker 2: which loan and the staff up there were fantast the
- 3:00Speaker 2: job keeping going and that's always a fantastic night. Lots
- 3:06Speaker 2: of people in the community donate to that event and
- 3:08Speaker 2: it's very well supported in the community. How wonderful.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Seventy seven thousand dollars did you say?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's that's the that's not the final figure.
- 3:19Speaker 2: They haven't put the final figure out yet, but that
- 3:22Speaker 2: was on the night the auction items raised. Yeah, over
- 3:26Speaker 2: seventy seven thousand dollars, which is fantastic.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That's wonderful stuff. And is that the only fundraiser that's
- 3:32Speaker 1: been happening or what else has gone on. I understand
- 3:34Speaker 1: there's been quite a bit.
- 3:35Speaker 2: We've had the Dreaming under the Stars to do It
- 3:39Speaker 2: for Dolly fundraiser and a big shout out to both
- 3:43Speaker 2: these events and all the volunteers that do work and
- 3:46Speaker 2: help behind the scenes, because without them it wouldn't happen.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So Dreaming under the Stars they raised over one hundred
- 3:54Speaker 2: and twenty seven thousand dollars KDE. It was just a
- 3:57Speaker 2: fantastic night. It was a beautiful drive eas evening the
- 4:00Speaker 2: camp draft, the ash Camp Draft was on that weekend
- 4:03Speaker 2: as well, so there's lots of station people in town.
- 4:06Speaker 2: It was really great.
- 4:08Speaker 1: That's phenomenal. What an enormous amount of money, I mean,
- 4:11Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty seven grand and it is for
- 4:15Speaker 1: the do for Dolly fundraiser or for their foundation which
- 4:19Speaker 1: we know just do such important work, such important work.
- 4:24Speaker 2: It absolutely is, Katie. Yeah, So other things that we've
- 4:27Speaker 2: had going on top pitch, Patrina Allison's gallery out on
- 4:32Speaker 2: Gorge Road had their official openings. They opened up their
- 4:36Speaker 2: gallery they build a new gallery out there on Gorge Row,
- 4:39Speaker 2: which for you know, they are always busy with manual
- 4:42Speaker 2: doing the cultural experiences and lots of busloads of tourists
- 4:46Speaker 2: go through there.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yep.
- 4:47Speaker 2: They have a purpose built gallery which is just superb.
- 4:51Speaker 2: The art's great. They've got a great little dish shop there.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It really is fantastic. And we've also got the o'keef
- 5:01Speaker 2: gardeners are back at it and that's open to the
- 5:03Speaker 2: dry season there open Wednesday and Saturday is nine till
- 5:07Speaker 2: twelve and again a whole heap of volunteers in there.
- 5:12Speaker 2: It's a heritage listard hush and the gardens are beautiful.
- 5:17Speaker 2: They open up in the in the shady ground. Thank
- 5:20Speaker 2: you Devin's year teas and this year they've also Katie
- 5:24Speaker 2: got seedlings available, so I've already spotted up my seedlings
- 5:27Speaker 2: for our show stores coming up into July and if
- 5:31Speaker 2: anyone wants seedlings, yeah, they are open for on Saturday
- 5:36Speaker 2: morning now nine till twelve.
- 5:38Speaker 1: How wonderful.
- 5:39Speaker 2: They do extremely well there.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Well, jo it sounds like there is an enormous amount
- 5:43Speaker 1: happening in Catherine at the moment. In fact, it sounds
- 5:46Speaker 1: like if you don't already have plans for the long
- 5:48Speaker 1: weekend take a drive to Catherine.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Well, that's right, we've got the Speedway Round two happening
- 5:54Speaker 2: this weekend, KATI two on Saturday. The following weekend, we've
- 5:59Speaker 2: got then Pride Festival, which always brings a lot of
- 6:03Speaker 2: people from Darwin down to the cast and Pride Festival.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It was I think last year was the first time
- 6:08Speaker 2: we had it, certainly the first time I've yeah, I
- 6:11Speaker 2: think last year was the first time here in Catherine
- 6:13Speaker 2: and it was a fantastic weekend. We recently had a
- 6:16Speaker 2: book there by all of the Catherine authors at the
- 6:19Speaker 2: town library. What else we had recently this week our
- 6:25Speaker 2: office we do community barbecues out and about. This week
- 6:29Speaker 2: we had a community barbecue at Rockhole and we just
- 6:33Speaker 2: happened to be there when say, the children were there
- 6:35Speaker 2: for their play to learn, which was great because all
- 6:38Speaker 2: the little kids are there and we do a community
- 6:40Speaker 2: barbecue just to get to know the people of community,
- 6:43Speaker 2: listen to their concerns. And one of the teams up
- 6:46Speaker 2: there it was about the bus pulling up out the
- 6:51Speaker 2: front to pick up the children in the morning and
- 6:54Speaker 2: the bus pulling up on the opposite side of the road.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Just a simple thing like that to bring to attention.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know, it's dangerous for grandmothers walk across the road
- 7:03Speaker 2: Florina Road when it's busy in the morning. So you know,
- 7:06Speaker 2: potentially the bus could come into the community and you know,
- 7:10Speaker 2: pick the kids up from the bus stop rather than
- 7:11Speaker 2: having them cross the road.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So well, yeah, absolutely, and try to get it sorted. Well,
- 7:18Speaker 1: we might, We might see if we can get a
- 7:19Speaker 1: bit of an update from you in that space with
- 7:22Speaker 1: the bus situation. We are going to have to leave
- 7:25Speaker 1: it there because we understand that the Chief Minister is
- 7:27Speaker 1: just now making an announcement about this vaccine, the vaccine mandates.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Joe Hersey, thanks so much for heading beyond the bear
- 7:33Speaker 1: of the line with us this morning.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Thanks Katie, and I hope to talk to you again
- 7:39Speaker 2: beyond the barra of the Ligne scene.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Sounds like a plan. Good on you, Joe, you too,
