SPEAKER_00: And we're back with another episode of Unlocking Huntington Beach.
• 0:05
  SPEAKER_00: What's going on?
• 0:05
SPEAKER_00: My name is Lane Stone, and we've got a specific one for you today.
• 0:09
SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to be talking all about parking.
• 0:12
SPEAKER_00: So let's get into it.
• 0:14
SPEAKER_00: Parking in Huntington Beach should be simple.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: There's a beach, there are parking spaces.
• 0:19
SPEAKER_00: You park the car and you go enjoy the beach.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_00: Huntington Beach has city parking, state beach parking, downtown garages, private garages, meters, residential restrictions, and completely different rates during major events.
• 0:30
SPEAKER_00: So if you just type in Huntington Beach into your GPS and accept the first parking lot it gives you, there's a good chance you'll pay more than you need to, park farther away than expected, or end your beach day with a ticket on your windshield, and nobody wants that.
• 0:44
SPEAKER_00: Today I'm breaking down exactly where to park based on what you're coming to Huntington Beach to do.
• 0:49
SPEAKER_00: We'll cover the pier, downtown Huntington Beach, Dog Beach, Bolsa Chica, Huntington State Beach, and what you need to know before coming here during one of our major events.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to Unlocking Huntington Beach.
• 1:01
SPEAKER_00: Again, my name is Lane Stone.
• 1:03
SPEAKER_00: I am born and raised in Huntington Beach, and I've been running a top real estate team right here in Beautiful HB for more than 14 years.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_00: And whether you're visiting for the day, moving into the area, or already live here and still haven't figured out where you're allowed to leave your car, this guide is for you.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: So the first thing to understand is that Huntington Beach parking falls into three basic categories.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_00: You have the City of Huntington Beach parking, which includes City Beach, Lots Meters, Pier Plaza, and the main promenade garage.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_00: You have California State Parks Parking, which includes Bolsa Chica State Beach and Huntington State Beach.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_00: And then you have privately operated garages, including places like Pacific City and the Strand.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_00: These systems do not all share the same rates or parking passes, which can lead to a lot of confusion.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: So let's start with downtown Huntington Beach.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: If you're coming from Main Street, the restaurants, surf city nights on Tuesday evenings, shopping downtown, or a relatively short walk to the pier, one of the easiest options is the main promenade parking structure at 200 Main Street.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_00: This garage has 830 spaces and sits between Walnut and Olive Streets.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_00: The biggest advantage here is that the first 90 minutes are completely free.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_00: After that, pricing changes depending on the season.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_00: This is usually my first recommendation if someone wants to explore downtown and doesn't mind walking a few blocks to the beach.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_00: It's covered, centrally located, and you don't have to keep running back to a meter every hour.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_00: Or remember where you're parked.
• 2:30
SPEAKER_00: Nothing says relaxing beach day, like wandering around a parking lot carrying wet towels and trying to make your car beep a million times.
• 2:36
SPEAKER_00: There's also the strand parking structure located around 5th and 6th Street.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_00: It puts you close to restaurants, hotels, and the northern side of downtown.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_00: But there is one important warning.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_00: The city's municipal beach and main promenade parking pass is not valid inside the strand structure.
• 2:53
  SPEAKER_00: It's a separately operated garage.
• 2:55
SPEAKER_00: Pacific City also has its own private garage.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: It's convenient if Pacific City is your actual destination, especially if you're eating or shopping there because participating merchants may offer parking validation.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: Always ask the business about validation before assuming that they have it.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: Some people discover the rules only after they reach the exit gate.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: And here's a bonus tip: save your receipt.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_00: If you spent more than$200 at a participating merchant, the attendant might let you through for free.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_00: Now, if your main destination is the Huntington Beach Pier, you have a few options.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: The closest option is Pier Plaza Parking, which consists of lots beside the pier between 1st and 7th Streets.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: These are pay-by-plate lots, so you'll enter the license plate number at the pay station instead of putting a paper receipt on your dashboard.
• 3:37
SPEAKER_00: You may also be able to add time remotely through the parking application listed on the lot.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_00: Pier Plaza is your most convenient option if you're bringing small children, beach equipment, or someone who doesn't want to walk several blocks.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_00: The problem is that everyone else has reached the same breathtaking conclusion.
• 3:53
SPEAKER_00: These lots can fill quickly on Sunday weekends, holidays, and during events.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_00: My general rule is that if the pier is your priority on a summer weekend, arrive before 9 in the morning.
• 4:03
SPEAKER_00: Earlier is even better during the holiday weekends or major events.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_00: If Pier Plaza is full, don't spend 40 minutes circling it, hoping someone leaves.
• 4:11
SPEAKER_00: Go directly to the main promenade garage or the large beach lot south of the pier.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: South of the pier, the city operates the large beach parking area between First Street and Beach Boulevard.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_00: Entrances are available near First Street, Huntington Street, and Beach Boulevard.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_00: This is one of the better choices if you plan to stay on the sand for several hours, bring a lot of equipment, use the fire rings, or spend the whole day at the beach.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_00: Fourth of July and special event rates can be much higher, so never assume the regular rate applies during a major weekend.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_00: This is generally a better value than hourly parking if you know you'll be staying most of the day.
• 4:47
SPEAKER_00: Just pay attention to which entrance you use and which section you park in.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_00: That lot is much longer than it looks when you're driving through it.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: If you're coming to Huntington Dog Beach, do not park near the pier and assume you'll casually walk there.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_00: Dog Beach is farther north along Pacific Coast Highway between Golden West Street and Seapoint Avenue.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_00: There are two-meter parking areas serving Dog Beach, including the Dog Beach lot near Seapoint and Bluff Top Parking closer to Golden West.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: Huntington Dog Beach is open daily from 5 a.m.
• 5:14
  SPEAKER_00: to 10 p.m.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_00: Dogs must be remained leashed in the parking lots and on the upper bluff, although the beach itself is leash optional.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_00: Dog Beach is extremely popular on warm weekends and the smaller lots can fill up quickly.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_00: Come early, especially if you want a shorter walk or if you're bringing an older dog.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_00: And please do not let your dog out of the car without the leash already attached.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_00: You are beside Pacific Coast Highway, not inside a fenced dog park.
• 5:39
SPEAKER_00: Now we need to clear up one of the most common sources of confusion.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_00: Bolsa Chica State Beach and the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve are not the same destination.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_00: They sit across from Pacific Coast Highway from each other, but they use different parking systems.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_00: If you're going to Bolsa Chica State Beach, you'll use the State Beach parking area on the ocean side of PCH.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_00: Bolsa Chica State Beach now uses a cashless park and pay system through LAZ.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_00: You park first, scan the QR code, post it in the lot, and pay electronically.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_00: The beach is open from 6 a.m.
• 6:09
  SPEAKER_00: to 10 p.m.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: with entry gates closing at 9 p.m.
• 6:13
SPEAKER_00: If you're visiting the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, use one of the smaller reserve lots on the wetland side of PCH.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_00: There's a north lot near the Interpretive Center on Warner Avenue and another lot farther south across from the state beach entrance.
• 6:25
SPEAKER_00: Public reserve parking is free, but the lots are small and can fill up.
• 6:30
SPEAKER_00: Dogs and bicycles are prohibited on the reserve trails.
• 6:33
SPEAKER_00: So remember, beach day on the sand means the paid state beach lot.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_00: Walking, bird watching, or visiting the wetlands means the smaller free reserve lots across the highway.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_00: Do not park on one side and attempt to sprint casually across PCH.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_00: Use the correct entrance for your destination.
• 6:49
SPEAKER_00: Now for the southern end of Huntington Beach, including the area between Beach Boulevard and the Santa Ana River, use Huntington State Beach.
• 6:55
SPEAKER_00: This is a strong option for family beach days, volleyball, fire rings, biking, and spending several hours near the southern end of the coast.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_00: Oversized vehicles cost more and special event pricing can override the normal rate.
• 7:07
SPEAKER_00: Huntington State Beach is cashless and allows same-day reentry, but reentry is subject to parking availability.
• 7:13
SPEAKER_00: If the lot reaches capacity, even a past or previously purchased entry does not guarantee immediate access.
• 7:19
SPEAKER_00: This is not the best parking option if your main goal is walking around Main Street or visiting the pier.
• 7:24
SPEAKER_00: You can technically walk north, but your relaxing beach visit will gradually become an endurance event.
• 7:28
SPEAKER_00: Street parking can save you money, but it can also cost you considerably more if you stop reading halfway through the sign.
• 7:34
SPEAKER_00: City parking meters generally operate from 6 a.m.
• 7:37
SPEAKER_00: until midnight every day, including holidays.
• 7:39
SPEAKER_00: Off-street city lots are generally active from 5 a.m.
• 7:42
  SPEAKER_00: until midnight.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_00: When parking on a residential street, check for permit requirements, street sweeping restrictions, and posted time limits, red curbs, driveways and alley entrances, and temporary event signs.
• 7:53
SPEAKER_00: Do not assume that because one car is parked somewhere, you are allowed to park there too.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_00: That driver may live there, they may have a permit, or they may simply be doing something wrong, and you're about to join them in a shared learning experience.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_00: Regular parking advice changes completely during the Fourth of July, the Pacific Air Show, the U.S.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_00: Open of Serving, and other major downtown events.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_00: The city can add an additional fee per hour to several city parking zones on designated special event days.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: During major events, arrive several hours earlier than you think you need to.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_00: Do not count on residential street parking, take a photo of where you're parked, expect traffic controls to change your normal route, and check the official event parking information before leaving home.
• 8:33
SPEAKER_00: Parking regulations and closures may be different from one event to the next, so this is the one part of the guide where the correct strategy is always to check again.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_00: If you visit the beach frequently, the city currently offers an annual beach parking permit.
• 8:47
SPEAKER_00: The permit is valid at City Beach Parking Lots, the main promenade parking structure, and metered spaces along Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_00: It's not valid at the Strand Garage and it does not replace a California State Parks pass for Bolsa Chica State Beach or Huntington State Beach.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_00: The city also excludes certain major event days, including designated 4th of July and Pacific Air Show dates.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_00: At the current daily peak rate, the pass begins making sense after roughly 10 full beach days.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_00: But only if the locations covered by the pass are places you actually use.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_00: A city pass does very little for someone who spends every weekend at a state beach.
• 9:24
  SPEAKER_00: Here's the simplest version.
• 9:26
SPEAKER_00: If you're going downtown, start with the main promenade garage.
• 9:29
SPEAKER_00: If you're going directly to the pier and convenience matters most, try Pier Plaza.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_00: If you're staying on the sand all day, use the large city beach lot or the appropriate state beach lot.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: If you're visiting Dog Beach, park between Golden West and Sea Point.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_00: And if you're visiting Bolsa Chica, make sure you know whether you mean the beach or the wetlands before you start driving.
• 9:48
SPEAKER_00: The best Huntington Beach parking spot is not necessarily the cheapest or the closest.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_00: It's the one that matches what you're doing and keeps you from spending the first hour of your visit circling Pacific Coast Highway.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_00: Now, if you found this guide helpful, subscribe to Unlocking Huntington Beach.

• 10:10
  SPEAKER_00: Do good.
• 10:10
