[rock music] Everybody shut your eyes! [rock music] I'm used to it.
• 0:17
Sa- Sam's like, "I'm, I'm thinking I'll put the headphones on after this intro is [laughs] done." [laughs] What's up? You're good, Sam. There he goes. We're there. All right. [laughs] We made it. Hey, everybody.
• 0:30
This is, uh, your Full Spectrum Cycling Show 295 that you might've heard a preview of last week. [laughs] Listen to that shredding. [sings] Hell yeah. [laughs] Now we're talking. Oh, you're gonna take me home tonight.
• 0:48
All right. See- That was awesome... we got the fucking intros from Hell, bro. Love it. All right, in the house today in the studio we got Tony, we got JK- Hi... in their, in their normal spots this week. Yeah.
• 1:00
And, uh- Normal spots physically, not mentally. And Sam B is joining us today too. Mm-hmm. Thanks for showing up, Sam. Y- absolutely. Thanks for having me, guys.
• 1:09
And, and, and to be fair, just because he's lurking in the background, we got Mark Peterson already on the horn from Ogden, Utah. Woo-hoo. What's up, Mark? Hello. Hi. How are you guys? Yeah. We're doing well.
• 1:20
How are you? I'm awesome, man. I'm awesome. Well, I mean, all things considered, I'm awesome. [laughs] Awesome. [laughs] That's about what I can say. Excellent. Well, you know, oh, to- Tony's touching a thing.
• 1:33
What are you touching there, Tony? I don't know. Stop it. That's why I'm touching it. So- No, not. Something beautiful. You need a rolled up newspaper- I don't know. Okay. So- It's hefty... so here's the deal.
• 1:41
Um, I was cleaning out some stuff, and that is the very first microphone I ever used doing a podcast. Ooh. Like in 2000. Uh. Long time ago. It's called a bl- It's got that tan color of a long time ago. Right?
• 1:55
It was white. [laughs] It's actually called a- Sun bleached... it's actually called a Snowball. It's a Blue Microphone Snowball. Now it's gone to boom.
• 2:01
And that's what a lot of people started their podcasting- Made in Latvia... career on. Latvia, you say? Like a, that's pretty wild- Bogey ball, kind of... yeah, right? Yeah, it does look a little bit like a bogey ball.
• 2:10
Yeah, so it- It's cool... so look at the connection. USB A to B. A. Ooh. But I, I, I did recently- That's B... get a USB A to C, so I'm gonna try and see- Ah, neat... I'm gonna try and see- Ha. Ha...
• 2:22
if we can run it right up that... i- i- well, if it, it, it's like, is this microphone still good for podcasting today? Oh. I would argue- Or better stated- Or is it, "Is this microphone any good?" Right.
• 2:33
I would argue that it is. Yeah. Uh, without even trying it because- It's the best looking one and...... in the end- It's cool... it really doesn't matter- [clears throat] Whatever you say...
• 2:40
if you have good content, right? Which is why our show sucks so bad- Gosh, we sound great... because we have no good content. We just sound great. But we sound awesome. We're spick and clean.
• 2:47
And that's really all that counts. [laughs] No caffeine. [laughs] Oh. Oh, man. So right off the bat, I want to hear about Uncle Nearest, because I think, was it you went there after our open house?
• 3:00
No, I deci- I went home and went to bed after our open house, but, um, our- There you go... our- Oh...
• 3:07
daughter ended up [laughs] our, our adult, our adult daughter ended up not feeling well and decided to come home Wednesday night.
• 3:16
Uh, and I'm like, "Well, if you're home, watch Daniel so Molly and I can run to Nessun Dorma and I can finally have an Uncle Nearest flight." Mm. And, um, so I'm a, I'm a rye whiskey drinker. Sure. I really like ryes.
• 3:32
Who doesn't? Right? Um, not their best. Oh. Um, their, their 18... I think it's... I, I have a picture of it we can put it in the show, and it's, like, 1856. Their, their... First of all, all three of them, really good.
• 3:47
Right. They are really a decent whiskey. Mm. Straight neat. If you're drinking neat whiskey, they're a good whiskey, but their 18, 1856, I think it is, oh, oh, just absolutely no bite.
• 4:05
Nice 96 proof, I th- 96- [laughs] Yeah, proof. No, that's good. But, but, like, s- like, sweet, flavory well. I mean, it, it is... I w- I literally told him, like, "Okay, this is really worth a decent pour."
• 4:20
So did you get into the Uncle Nearest history and how he allegedly- I ended up-... taught Jack Daniels how to make whiskey? Yeah, yeah, the next day I did when I watched the, the videos and stuff of- Okay...
• 4:33
their website and stuff. Yeah. And it is a very fascinating story that, you know, first of all, Jack Daniels was basically a, a orphaned child. We call him John out of respect. [laughs] Uh, uh, Mr. Daniels? Yeah. Okay.
• 4:49
Jonathan. Okay. Um, and the fact that- Just saying... Uncle Nearest is the one that showed him how to do it is, it, the, the story is narrated by a very famous person. I recommend you go to the website.
• 4:59
We'll put it in the show notes. Not James Earl Jones, is it? It's not, no. He's dead, unfortunately. But he could have done it years ago. Before. I, I don't think this has been around years.
• 5:07
Uh, it's, it's, it's been around for a while. Is it Liam Schreiber? It's Liam Schreiber, isn't it? Liam Schreiber, he keeps popping up as the narrator- It's, it's-... of things. I would- And not Peter Coyote.
• 5:14
If it's Peter Coyote, I'm in. I'm in. I would definer- definitely recommend a stop to Nessun Dorma for it.
• 5:21
Um, if you go during happy hour, other things are half price, which makes it a little more bearable for your $21 flight of three small pours. Yeah. Mm. But I would totally do it, like, Wednesday.
• 5:31
I'd do it tomorrow if somebody [laughs] wanted to. Right. It's that good. Yeah, it, it's, it's got a... It's, it's bitey, but the way it should be. Okay. I mean, it's whiskey after all.
• 5:42
It should punch you a little bit in the face, as far as I'm concerned. Yeah. I mean, it's one of, it's one of his relatives that has taken up the torch. His granddaughter, I believe. Yeah.
• 5:49
Right, and she's been on a lot of shows and a lot of podcasts and a lot of talking about the whole, "This is my family history thing." Yeah.
• 5:57
And I think that's awesome because the Jack Daniels distillery actually- John... hired sh- Stop it. A bunch of- Everyone's so familiar with him, you know, Jack. Might- Yeah. What about John Kennedy? I called him Jack.
• 6:10
What'd you call him? I don't know. Dad. [laughs] Deed. Anyway, it's a good story is my whole point here. Yeah. Since we're, uh, since we're leaving him hanging on the horn, let's, uh, let's check in with Mr.
• 6:21
Mark Peterson. Mr. Mark, uh, what are you doing over there in Ogden, Utah today? Riding a trainer. Well, I've been really, really busy. Last night I got obsessed with, uh, the AMP B3- [laughs]...
• 6:35
and, uh, decided that I'm going to be repainting a bunch of black parts white. Okay. That, that's a very interesting bike. So I sanded them down, got them all prepped up. What's that?
• 6:46
I said that is a very interesting bike. You know that, uh, Dave Luns was a, he was a huge AMP fork guy- Yeah... back in the day. He wasn't- Oh...
• 6:54
he wasn't the full-on B3 frame guy, but he had a succession of AMP forks on mostly GT RTSs and such, but from that same vintage, and, uh- They are very cool looking.
• 7:08
Yeah, and they, they worked surprisingly well back in the day because at- Well, I'm excited for it, and I, it's not, it, this is gonna be a show bike. It really isn't gonna be a, a go bike. Yeah.
• 7:20
I don't know if you remember back in the day when that fork came out, it was basically the time of, like, kinda shitty rock shocks and stuff, and with the stanchions being, you know- Yeah, nine- 93. Yeah. Ooh.
• 7:32
I think, yeah, the early- 93...
• 7:33
the early rock shocks came out probably, like, just before that, but the stanchions were so disconnected that you'd get this weird wobble in the wheel because one was going up and down, and the AMP fork really took
• 7:48
the suspension part out of the steering part, and I thought it was a, a brilliant design. I don't...
• 7:53
The only problem with it was they couldn't get more than, what, 30 to 60 millimeters of travel or something out of the thing, so. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's got, like, two inches of travel, something like that.
• 8:03
Yeah, otherwise- Oh, yeah... you have the front end of your bike's like that because of the way it's made. It had to be between- Mm... between, you know, be- in between where your crown race and, and your wh- whatever.
• 8:14
It just made a really long fork. But they were surprisingly- Sure. Sure... agile, and they, they, they worked pretty well for the day. I'm not saying that you should go buy one- Now...
• 8:24
now unless it's a, kind of a retro, wonderful thing like you've got. Or a show bike. Or a show bike. But yeah, so you're gonna paint some parts white? Well, I, I had a, it's just a bike. It...
• 8:39
Yeah, I'm gonna paint some parts white on it, um, like the spring coil, a headset, uh, some custom Tioga, um- Uh-huh... pedals that have grease zerks in the middle of them, but they're back from back in the day.
• 8:54
They're super cool. That's, that's- Um, everything's gonna be white and chrome, matchy matchy. What, what are you doing, Tony? Tony's doing something weird. Um, so w- Uh...
• 9:04
it's, it's funny you should mention, like, a zerk fitting because we were just dealing with a CYC motor issue, and we're like, "Wouldn't it be great if this motor had a zerk fitting and you could just, like, inject
• 9:17
the proper grease at the proper time whenever you wanted to instead of taking the whole thing apart?" Right. What a good idea. I know. Being able to maintain your part. Right? What's Tony doing over- Oh, holy moly...
• 9:30
what, what the hell's Tony doing over there? Tony's pointing his microphone at the floor again. What are you doing? He got some spikes on the, uh- Oh, so I wanted to tell you about the biggest part of the AMP bike. Okay.
• 9:37
Basically, a guy came over to my house and he said, "I heard you have BMX bikes parts for sale." I said, "No, but I may have something that you want. Come check it out."
• 9:46
And he ended up seeing my AMF Evel Knievel push pedal trike that was the very first wheeled, uh, toy I ever received in my life, right? Oh, nice. So I've had it my entire life, and he said, "I want that."
• 10:01
And I said, "Nope." [laughs] Mm-hmm. And he said, "I really want that." [laughs] And I said, "Nope." And he said, "How much?"
• 10:07
And I said, um, "$2,000," just trying to throw a huge number out, and he goes, "Ah, I can't do that." And I said, "Okay, go ahead and we'll just forget that. We'll move on."
• 10:16
[laughs] Well, it, he kept looking around my house. We kept talking about stuff.
• 10:19
We made a trade on one other little thing, and he goes, "How about if I trade you a, a B3 Research or an AMP B3 Research bike that is almost 100% original, and it's almost mint,
• 10:36
and I gave you $350 cash?" Done. [laughs] And I, I, I said, "Um, okay." So I, it took me a minute.
• 10:45
I mean, like, I, I told him, "No, and let me think about it," and about two hours later, I called him later on that night and said I would do it, 'cause it just made sense to me.
• 10:54
Like, we, we can't take any of this stuff with us. Right. There's stuff that has a huge amount of sentimental connection to it. Yeah. But what is that sentimental connection doing for me?
• 11:04
It's sitting up on top of this divider in the vaulted ceiling in between my kitchen and my front room ga- gathering greasy du- uh, dust from the kitchen stove. [laughs] That's it. Yeah.
• 11:15
And this way it could get cleaned up and some kid could enjoy it or, like- Right. Yeah... it could go into a museum. I, I totally agree. You know, something. That's a good call.
• 11:24
Well, this, this- And, and I get a sweet bike out of it and some money. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. So this re- And you took enough pictures of it to- Yeah... like, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
• 11:33
You know, like- Well, this re- this reminds me of my dad- That's how I part with my sentimentals... my dad's watch. Mm-hmm.
• 11:38
When my dad passed away, I, as he asked me to, took the watch off his wrist and said, "This is yours. This is what I'm leaving you." Oof. I've been carrying this uncomfortable hunk of metal- [laughs]... up my ass.
• 11:50
[laughs] No. Anyway, so it's an Omega Speedmaster, which is a, you know, badass watch. Went to the moon. Went to the moon. Not this particular one, but- That is a badass watch...
• 11:58
but it turns out a buddy of ours, his, his dad is into collectible watches and knows a bunch of people, and I'm like- You know, I wear an iWatch. App- what do they call these things? Apple Watch.
• 12:08
Yeah, sure Because it does a lot of stuff I need it to do. I'm never gonna wear a Speedmaster because I'm not begging for billions of dollars from billionaires. I'm just kinda looking for friends. Whatever. Mm.
• 12:18
But, uh- Mm... it was like, well, I- my business needs a shot in the arm. Do I really wanna sit on this thing and have it in a box in the dresser?
• 12:25
Or could this money get put to work for me making the business go forward, which is kinda where we're at now, and it's, it's similar to the, what you're talking about. I just think it's, you know- Yeah. Yeah...
• 12:36
this, this stuff is meant- I, I can identify with that, man. Yeah... it, it's kinda heavy. Yeah. Mm-hmm. No, I agree. I didn't wanna get rid of it, but I- Things are meant to be enjoyed or put, you know. Yeah. Yeah.
• 12:46
Sometimes things run its course within one... See, my only, my only- I mean-... trepidation is that it's gonna go to some collector who's just gonna turn it around and make more money on it. Yeah.
• 12:56
And otherwise- Well, that and the fear of your- Of course... your ghost dad looking down at you I don't have any ghost detection equipment. Okay. Well there- Chewy has not bought me anything yet to do- Yet...
• 13:05
any kind of ghost hunting with yet. Yet. [laughs] Why not? [laughs] Uh- No, I'm, I'm- Oh, hey... I have virtually nothing sentimental. Wait a second. Sven, come on over to my house.
• 13:15
Oh, my g- I'm sure- Oh, my ghosts are in Utah. They're, they're hanging out with Mark out there. Oh. [laughs] Dude, no, there's a portal at our, at my, at our house. Oh. There's a portal. It's like a Poltergeist house.
• 13:24
Oh, boy. Without the s- like creepy tree, 'cause they cut that down earlier. [laughs] They did. There was a creepy tree outside for a while, so, and- Creepy guy, creepy tree, creepy ghost.
• 13:34
You got a lot of stuff over there going on. Just makes sense. Yeah. I know. Sure would. Yeah. Yeah. All right. He keeps running the tap. It keeps running the tap. Just you use a lot of water up there.
• 13:45
I got a- I think he's rinsing things. I gotta ask Mark a question. He just turns it on. Got another question. I think he's rinsing dead things. Another question for Mark here. Yep. So o- one re- Sure...
• 13:53
b- before, before we started the show Mark had already called in and he said, uh, "Can you hear the trainer?" I can't. And I'm like, what? Are you, are you on your trainer while you're on the show? Or how...
• 14:02
What's this trainer thing? Is that... What do you do with that thing? How does that work? I, I, I just barely got off.
• 14:08
I h- hit the amount of minutes that I wanted to get for today, and so I figured I'd just do it while we were on the phone. Oh, right. Yeah. Is it, so- But I'm done now, so I can sit down and have a glass of water.
• 14:18
He can't hear it at all. No, it was a bicycle trainer. Okay. Yeah. Didn't hear a wor- uh, didn't- So what do you have? Do you have a Peloton? Did you get a Peloton before they went, you know, like stupid cheap? No.
• 14:26
He's not that dumb. [laughs] Oh, no. I, I've had this trainer for, like, almost, uh, 15 years. Uh, it's a, like a fluid... It's a Kinetic is the brand name, and it's got like a free wheel weight on it- Yep...
• 14:40
that's like a 20 pound free wheel weight. So when you're riding on it, it feels like you're on flat ground. So when you stop pedaling, it coasts. Oh, right. Like, it doesn't just come to a stop. Helpful for me.
• 14:50
It, it coasts, so it simulates riding on flat ground really well. And I don't like riding on trainers. I'd way rather be outside. Of course.
• 14:58
But with the amount of stuff that I'm trying to accomplish right now, I just gotta get done what I need to get done, even if that means riding for 15, 20 minutes when I can. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Don't mind that idea at all.
• 15:09
Why don't you jiggly wiggly the Whitey thingy? Uh-oh. [bell ringing] 'Cause s- speaking of trainers, I know you're not going uphill on one, but you can kinda pretend you are.
• 15:17
You know, you can kinda- Uphill's a state of mind... y- I still have one of the old Schwinn copper colored 1960s Airdyne kind of deals. Oh, those are cool. And, like, you just turn the knob and it just puts- Yeah...
• 15:27
it just puts a, a felt pad on your- Mm-hmm... on your front flywheel- Yeah. It's like this-... and just, it's like rrr... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And- I mean-...
• 15:35
the only thing is it doesn't stop s- it's like a Fixie, so when it, when you stop, it doesn't stop- It doesn't break your knees. Doesn't stop- Oh, yeah... breaking your shins up, so. Oh, wow. [laughs] No free wheeling.
• 15:44
No free wheel. No. Well- Geez... i- if mine gets too easy, I'll put a phone book underneath the front wheel or two phone books under the front wheel so it lifts up the front. Hmm.
• 15:53
And it actually makes it quite a, quite a bit harder. I mean, granted, it's not gonna- You're uphill... duplicate a hill, but- You're, you're uphill... a little bit, you know?
• 16:03
Well, since we're at the top of the hill- Yeah. Yeah... let's talk about the beer that, uh, JK brought. This is Deschutes. Now, this is a good one. This is a really good beer. It's a fresh haze IPA- Yeah...
• 16:12
loaded with citrusy hops. Deschutes does no wrong. It- I haven't- It was born in Bend, Oregon. How can it go wrong? They, they do no wrong. I was surprised. I, uh- These aren't cheap either, right?
• 16:23
They're like 15 bucks a six-pack- No... or something like that? It was- Oh, they're 10-ish... this was 10. Right around 15. They're the regular price.
• 16:28
I, I think I'm thinking of one of those other Oregonian- It depends where you get it... uh, Rogue. Breweries. You're probably thinking of Rogue. They're expensive. Is it? Yeah. Mm. It's good. Yeah. I enjoy it.
• 16:39
I have not run into a bad... So yeah, you got the Hazy. Oh, yeah. I haven't run, run into a bad Bend beer. What's the one that has the fresh squeezed IPA? Uh, Deschutes. That's Deschutes. Yeah.
• 16:48
Aren't those like 16 bucks a six-pack? No. No. They're 16 bucks a 12-pack. [laughs] A 12? Okay. So they're really worth it. [laughs] Yeah, if you can get it for, you know, a 12-pack for that.
• 16:57
I guess, I guess they must be cheaper than they were, 'cause there was a time I... Those are quite expensive. Oh. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
• 17:03
I don't know what you're rambling on about, but- But it's like the overload of, the overload of a lot of craft beer- I do like it... kind of drives the price to a normal nominal, eh, 10 to $12 for a six-pack.
• 17:15
I'll spend a lot on beer- D- doing the min-... but it is kind of- I agree... similar to other beers that are- But it's like two bucks a beer... cheaper. Then, I mean, I can, I can go to 12 bucks.
• 17:23
And, uh- But I'm still kind of hand wringing. I have a hard time... I mean, at that price it should be almost barrel aged and something at that point. Right.
• 17:29
It should be something like that, but- Like, you might get a Next Star... you still get some crazy barrel aged stuff for that kind of price. Yeah. I, I've been crazy about that kind of thing lately. That's cool.
• 17:37
Next Star. I, I get that. I get that one. I really get into it. Yeah. Even I saw some Surly- I go down to Sandy Waters over there. Oh, that's good stuff. I saw some Surly- I've been loving hanging out there...
• 17:44
like Ax Handle-... that's good stuff... Ax blah, blah, blah, whatever. Great food. All right. Is that right? I haven't been there. The food's good? Oh, the food is so good. Oh, I gotta check that out. I gotta say this.
• 17:53
I hadn't seen Sam's new glasses yet, 'cause those are pretty cool. I love... I have. Yeah. Oh. Well, I've been here with them- Yeah, we shot the shit in the yard with them on... I mean, it is...
• 18:01
Do you have multiple glasses just so you can be like different glasses every day or? No. I- I actually have several pairs of the identical ones. [laughs] Well, I, so my- No, I do too...
• 18:09
I smashed them the other day and I had to get some new ones. Well, my prescription hasn't really changed, so even though I get an eye glasses every year because whatever, whatever-
• 18:20
They're all kind of the same, so I kind of have a stack of them now. Yeah. And- Oakley's usually, right? Yeah, they- Yeah... because, just because of the- We, we have this talk Yeah, we've had this talk...
• 18:27
because of the strength. And I know you like that, and- Yeah... I'll have to try that... because it's like the Optigrab. Yeah. I get it. I get it. From the jerk, you know? Yeah. Pretty much.
• 18:37
Uh, but that's just something that works for my whatever, my, my, my thing. When I put my head down, it doesn't slip. And, yeah, and they don't fall off. [laughs] But I did learn something very important.
• 18:49
If you have ph- photo gray or transitions lenses, they're actually glass. Oh. Yeah. Hmm.
• 18:56
Because I took a spill, like, I think in December sometime, ice, ch, ch, ch, shattered it, and I punched myself in my face and actually broke my glasses- No... which was the lens.
• 19:05
But they're protective glasses, so they don't shatter. No. Oh. They don't. Oh, oh.
• 19:09
And not only that, it came back to bite me, like, just this week because one of the little shards about that big- Was still in your face... was, was sit- Yeah, no.
• 19:18
It was sitting in the car seat in between where I had put them when I got into the vehicle. Oh, boy. Oh, no. Right in there, so I'm cleaning shit out and I'm like, "Ah, ooh. Oh." Good way to slice your fingertips.
• 19:28
"Oh, oh, are you, you bit me again, you goddamn glasses." Just gonna keep getting you. No, I know. Interesting. But no, now I think I'm done now.
• 19:35
But otherwise, all my other lenses are plastic always, and they, you could shoot a shotgun at them pretty much and they won't break, so. Is that- Well, you'll break your face... a titanium frame you have right there?
• 19:44
These? Yeah. Yeah. They just seem very lightweight- Feel how light those are... just the look of it. Yeah, I mean- They're like, they're like air... for what it is, that's very lightweight. Yeah.
• 19:51
No, but yours are very stylish. It just, 'cause it has that- I do like those glasses... it has that little- Matter of fact, when you came in, I'm like, "I need to know about those 'cause- Yeah... I might need those too."
• 19:59
Yeah. All right. I'll send you that, um, item number 'cause- [laughs] I have- You know where I get them... we know, yeah. We, we ride together... from Bike Depot. S- all right, Mark, what's up?
• 20:08
I have a theory about bicyclists and glasses, that a- almost every cyclist that I know has a bunch of pairs of glasses. [laughs] How many pairs of glasses do you guys each have? Well, a- Sunglasses or- Five... eye?
• 20:21
Yeah, actively used glasses, probably eight. I have, I have five pairs. Two sunglasses, three regular. Well, Daniel hid some, some pairs. I have five of the identical.
• 20:29
And Daniel hid a pair this week, so I don't know where the fuck they are. I have five of the identical. [laughs] You've all s- you've all seen me in them, those little round Maui Jims.
• 20:37
They just, kinda like those, but they just have the most lightweight thing. They clamp right to your head and I've been using them for over- I, I'm-... 12 years probably.
• 20:46
I just, I- I'm dealing with Daniel putting mine into a transporter and they're somewhere in the attic or something- [laughs]... he won't tell me. He woke up and hid my glasses. Yeah. What, Cronenberg, like The Fly?
• 20:57
I don't know. Like, Dmar- It's just- Zzz. He's making them. He won't- Sure. He, every time I tease him about it, he's like- Yeah, uh... "I transported them to the attic." In the transporter. Like- Yeah, da, da, da, da...
• 21:09
so where's the, where's the transporter located? They're gonna come out like Brundlefly. I go, I go check in- Brundle glasses... I go check in the microwave. Yes- yesterday he told me he's a black hole. Help me.
• 21:17
Oh, he is a black hole. Help me. Yeah, he's a black hole. [laughs] I take care of everything, I'm a black hole. I'm like, "Okay, kid." This is what I do with [laughs] this is what I do with every fucking day.
• 21:26
[laughs] Whoa, Spit Take. Do, okay, do you think he's too big for these? Uh, uh, uh, no. Uh, I was wondering if you might have some snowshoeing. No, he's, he's, in fact... Oh, he might be. I don't know.
• 21:43
I gotta see his foot in one. Yeah. He would love that. I was, I was wondering.
• 21:46
So here, you- He says you- Well, you take them for now, but they're, eventually they're going up to Schlabowski because they actually have snow up there, but if he- He would, he would lose his shit in grass with these.
• 21:57
Yeah, just have him t- tromp around. I mean- I'll tell you- No, you're not putting them on his arms. Yeah. "Rawr, rawr, rawr," and then, like, claw people.
• 22:03
[laughs] I will not, 'cause if I even recommend that, he'll do it. I know. Yeah. That's, I'm just- He- He'll be walking around the living room with them... moves- Scraping... the floors. I'm playing chess here.
• 22:13
I'm just playing chess here. All right. You're, you're not sucking floors, no thanks. I'm, I'm thinking five moves ahead. Five moves ahead. J- just to keep the, the people in Utah- Yeah, that's my fifth move ahead...
• 22:20
keep the people in Utah up to speed, these, Mark, these were some- [laughs]... these were some red feather snowshoes that my, both my kids used and they're, you know, small 10, 12-year-olds.
• 22:30
But those people were- But yeah, I kinda figured it was something like that... but those people were not 100 pounds when they were that age, I don't think. He's only- Yeah... 97.5 pounds. Okey-dokey. Yeah, same here.
• 22:41
I'm only- 90... 1, 100, uh, 97.5 197.5 years old. [laughs] It's more about how big he's gonna be next year, 'cause- I know... I don't think there's gonna be snow this year unless you, uh, go- Well-...
• 22:53
way north or something... we're going to Hayward. I'm going up there this weekend. Oh, is there snow in Hayward still? Yeah, they're getting five to nine today and tomorrow. Oh. Is there a- Just good timing.
• 23:01
And believe it or not- Is there an event?... we're actually bringing our snowshoes because [laughs]... What's the event? Fat Bike Birky. Oh, the Birky's happening here. Fat Bike Birkies this weekend. Nice. Hey, Greg?
• 23:12
Yes. You, you did a, a post recently about your, uh, uh, like traveling, uh, podcast studio on your, on your e-bike, cargo bikes. Oh, yeah. His Omnium. My Omnium, yeah. What do you th- what do you think of the idea?
• 23:25
Yeah, you ought to have that with you up there too. I, that would be a wonderful place to take that out and demo it.
• 23:31
I, well, I, it, with five to nine inches of snow, we're work- I wanna work on a Fat Bike version of that basic Omnium idea. Yeah, that's- But yes... a lot of snow...
• 23:42
I, okay, so to be fair, I will take that gear up there. I do not know, I'm not taking that bike up there 'cause I have... So we got, this week I finished my Bearclaw, got that built up.
• 23:53
Bearclaw Bicycle Company, Bruno titanium thingy that I did a little quick intro video on. And then we also got the new, um, Panorama Cycles Chickchucks. That's the carbon Fat Bike?
• 24:05
The carbon Fat Bike from these guys in Canada- A-... which is super interesting because it's really slack in the head tube and really steep in the seat tube, and I'm just super curious about- Interesting...
• 24:16
how it works as a Fat Bike. Yeah. Hmm. Um, I'm gonna take that up to- Interesting...
• 24:21
I'm gonna take that up there and I'm gonna leave it with Dave Schlabowski to muck about with for a few weeks till he comes back down this way- Then I wanna get John Trusky on it Oh.
• 24:31
Because this- You want an honest opinion- Well, this is an- Trusky... okay, so I've been trying to come up with this thing and I, or trying to pimp this idea of snow flow trails.
• 24:40
It's like everybody's got flow trails, but when you put snow on 'em, you got snow flow. So this thing is- [laughs] Right You make your snow flow. [laughs] But it has such a, it's a, I mean- Mm...
• 24:50
compared to every other fat bike I've ever ridden, it's got a c- it's like a 67.75 or something head tube angle. It's really sh- slack compared to what you would get on a normal- It's a comfort bike...
• 25:02
well, but normally in soft conditions, you would have a steeper head tube because of the way the soft tire works and eh, whatever. A lot of geometry shit.
• 25:12
Theoretically, it would be great on super packed flow snow trails. I wanna see how it works on soft snow and sand. Nice. Because I, I'm not saying it's not gonna be great, but I, my mind says I don't get it, you know?
• 25:28
Mm. But, but we will find out. Hey, you guys have snow. We still don't have any snow. You're just making me jealous about riding on snow. We have no fucking snow.
• 25:35
Oh, it, well, they're getting five to nine where I'm headed in Hayward, and they already have a good base, so we actually- Six hours away... have snow in the northern Wisconsin region, so. But yeah, not down here.
• 25:45
How far away are you having to drive to get to it? [laughs] That's five hours? Uh, five and a half. That's what I'm saying. That's why I was singing it in the, uh- Yeah.
• 25:51
Well, unless I make an out of the way trip to get a TX-7100- I've seen that before... uh, FM tuner.
• 25:57
[laughs] That said, that guy's been kind of a knob, and there's one local for 10 bucks more that is in way better shape, so I'm good. Oh, then just buy that. Well, I still have the NAD over there, though.
• 26:08
We have problems with our audio equipment almost as bad as we have problems- [laughs]... with our bike equipment. [laughs] Well, okay, so I would- As someone else who- All right...
• 26:14
just purchased audio equipment this weekend... so, so look at the little NAD stuff over there and look- I'll buy it... at the bottom one. It's, like, not the same color. So I was like, well- I'll take it...
• 26:22
so when I get the Pioneer, it's gonna be silver like old-school Pioneer was back in the old days in the '80s. Is that just a tuner? Yeah. I'll take it. Well, not so fast. No. Oh, no. [laughs] I'd love an AD tuner.
• 26:37
But the, the TX-7100, I went through who's the most sensitive tuner out there for FM because WMSC, who I wanna listen to over the air, not streaming, and in this shitty building, I need as good as it can get. Yeah.
• 26:51
And that's one of the- Mm-hmm... three everybody recommends. So that one is still good, but you should see the antenna. It's up- Eight bucks... on, it- it's up here I'll give you eight bucks for it right now...
• 27:00
it's up under here. Oh, sure. Yeah. Oh, I can imagine. So you- You need that... it's a big circle. Well, it's a big block building. Yeah. I know. I wanna put a s- thing on the roof. A woof?
• 27:10
I'm just gonna drop a- I don't think you need a roof. I think you just need it right out that window...
• 27:13
so I was gonna get rid of all my coax, but now I'm just gonna throw it down from the roof through the window here- To make an antenna... so I can have- [laughs] Right... the antenna on the roof.
• 27:20
This is why we save certain things. [laughs] Well, I was gonna ask Tony if I should get- It's not hoarding. It's waiting- I got, like, 300 feet of coax... for this moment... whatever I'm gonna do with it. This moment.
• 27:26
I got some if you want some more to throw out your- Oh, you got, you got more to- we should- Coax? I'll bring it over. Sure. I got lots of coax. Coax party? Yeah, it'll be like a- A little coax party.
• 27:34
Yeah, it'll be like Tupperware but with coax cables. I gotta be honest, I was thinking about throwing shit off the roof of this building, which is four stories high.
• 27:41
[laughs] And these guys next door at Amorphic, they do this, 'cause they're engine nerds, so they do this thing with the egg and you gotta make the egg not- Eh. Just like in sixth grade everybody did. Yep. Yep. Yeah.
• 27:51
It's amazing how many fucking- Seventh grade... people our age can't do it. Seventh grade on my part. Right on. To be fair. [laughs] So they go up on top of that building and throw them off.
• 27:59
I'm like, "Oh, no, no, no, no. Come over to this building." [laughs] Yeah. It's way taller. [laughs] Let's see. It's almost twice as tall. You would- Well-... you would one-up it, for sure. Well, I don't know.
• 28:08
I mean, terminal velocity, if it's- No, you're right... whatever, whatever. Shmitty, shmitty, shmitty, sh- It's gonna have to- The tetri- tetradecahedron-... the most fun we could have, yeah...
• 28:15
that's, uh, buoyed by two, uh, parachutes. [laughs] I was gonna say, get some paratroopers. See, why wasn't... All right, why was Ron not on this show? Right? He would be all about this engineering things.
• 28:24
He was mixin', mixin' and twistin' things. Yeah. He was doing- He was growing beards... he was doing his Willy Wonka- Mm... alchemy awesomeness. [laughs] All right, Marky Mark, uh, you got anything you wanna talk about?
• 28:35
Don't call him Marky Mark. Oh, he's Marky Mark. He's not. Please. Unless you have the Funky Bunch. He's way cooler. [laughs] Yeah, where, where's the Funky, where the Funky Bunch at? He's, oh, I can't believe this.
• 28:46
This went downhill fast. He's got a Funky Bunch, I'm sure. It's some good vibrations. [laughs] Singin', he's got a funky junk in the trunk. Got the sweet sensation. All right.
• 28:55
Just, uh, [laughs] since, since we already wasted all your time today, Mark, what do you, [laughs] what do you got going, what do you got for us on the way out of this thing?
• 29:05
Oh, I'm just, uh, doing some, uh, kind of depressing bike work here, uh, later on tonight and tomorrow.
• 29:10
Um, I built up a BMX bike last, last summer in, in anticipation of going and racing BMX at least one race, you know what I mean? Mm-hmm. And then medical stuff happened and, uh, since then, um, I've discovered that
• 29:25
there are several parts on, uh, my BMX bike that I could sell really, really quickly to that collector that, uh, traded me for the B3 and so I am disassembling my BMX bike for one of the shows for my neighborhood bike shop.
• 29:40
I'm gonna have me taking it apart and parting it out and showing people how I take it all the way down, take the spokes all the way down. Hm.
• 29:48
Disassemble the wheels, everything, and, uh, then kind of break down why it's so sad, because I would've sold the whole bike for 500 bucks. Oh. [laughs] But if I take it apart, I can make 800. Yeah. Well, I, so
• 30:03
I, I, I wanna make sure that people know you're, 'cause I've been following your neighborhood bike shop stuff and, you know, you're starting to get some viewers.
• 30:12
You're starting to get some numbers going, and I think it's because you're genuine. Thanks, John. You're genuine and people, like, wanna see what you're doing and it, it's, on YouTube it is The Neighborhood Bike Shop.
• 30:24
Yep. Right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. The Neighborhood Bike Shop. I know, they're good. I mean, you know, we, we- And I would love it if we could, like, get people to subscribe to it. That would be really cool.
• 30:35
I think once people start seeing my bikes that they'll be really into kind of my creative process. And as I... 'Cause I, I still have to finish that banana seat that I'm doing, the suspension banana seat.
• 30:48
Oh, that was cool. Oh, that's, that was a good one. That was a good one. Bananas. Bananas. Banana seats. My first bike, banana seat. Yeah. Make it swing with a seat.
• 30:57
Uh- But until then, I'm, I've gotta make content, so I'm gonna have to sell my bikes, so I might as well- Hey... document them for all time sake before they get taken apart and sold. Excuse me.
• 31:06
Do you know what, do you know what making content means these days? Eh. Do you have, like, nice- Oh, I don't know... do you have, like, nice toes or your hair's- Tattoos... your hair's pretty good or...
• 31:17
Elon Musk wants to marry you. My toes have been pretty good this winter. You could be making some content, baby. [laughs] I'm going to sit on cupcakes- We can stop this getting disturbing... in slow motion. Yeah.
• 31:27
Why doesn't- [imitates camera clicking] Why doesn't Mark have an OnlyFans site, is what my question is. [laughs] Sorry, do you wanna hear the whole- Well, you know I won't subscribe [laughs] All righty.
• 31:39
Well, Mark, I mean, thank you. I know this show wasn't, you know, it's no different than any, any of the other- No, that's fine... 294 shows we've done, [laughs] but, uh, thank you very much for calling in.
• 31:51
We just kind of freestyle it and figure it out. Yeah. You're welcome anytime, of course. Not bad.
• 31:54
And, uh, I do wanna make sure that, you know, people know about your YouTube channel and whatever else you're, you're needing, you know, exposure for right now, so. Now you say.
• 32:04
Definitely, uh, send people as, if you can, to The Neighborhood Bike Shop on YouTube.
• 32:09
And also, if you guys are ever in Utah, please stop by at Longhorn Bicycle at our Syracuse location where the phone number's 801-820-5934, or in our Perry location, which is up in northern Utah at 435-230-3775.
• 32:28
And I hope to see you guys this next summer. Right on. Oh, that sounds like fun. Fuck yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, in- including, except I'm thinking of going...
• 32:37
Did you listen to the last show about Cannon Beach, that thing going on out in, uh, uh, Oregon? Oregon. Just south of Astoria, by the way, Michael. I did check where the geography is of it.
• 32:49
There's this Cannon Bike Beach Festival in May. It's a three-day thing, riding on sand on the Pacific Ocean. Sounds pretty good. Gotta go through Utah to get- Sounds really great...
• 32:58
gotta go through Utah to get there, so there you go. There you go. I might pick up Mark on the way. It's a, yeah, it's a Goonies quest. Take, take a weekend off, Mark, and let's- It's totally a Goonies quest...
• 33:06
let's go to- Oh, that'd be awesome... let's go to Oregon. Oregon. Let's do it. Oregon. Let's do it, man. Oregon. Sounds like fun. All right, brother. Hey, Alan, you guys have a great night.
• 33:13
Love, love you, and I'll talk to you later. Thank you very much. Love you too. Always good to have you on. Take it easy. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Oh, dude, again. Everyone's turning to Chris Treezen. [laughs] Bye.
• 33:27
[laughs] I had to do it too. Chris Treezen. [laughs] Everyone's turning to Chris Treezen. I just, it, it, especially at the beginning of the show, he is just so, like, energetic. It's like... You look good at blocky.
• 33:36
You smell good too. Get it down, bro. [laughs] Oh, man. Love it. All right, Sam. We haven't really talked a lot, but what's happening? Uh, well- You got a new thing on the back of your head.
• 33:48
Yeah, I got a new tattoo- You got a fresh tat... on the back of my head. Here, let's see, let's see if we can, let's- Go that way so we get-... go this way... get a camera on that one. Yeah, that one. There you go.
• 33:57
No, let's, let's do- Wait. Oh, there we go. And there. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's, that's good. That's it. That's it. Yeah. Yeah. That's definitely it. Is that hurt- Wow Oh, yeah.
• 34:05
Were you just looking at- Yeah, 'cause it- I even numbed it, and it- Whose bulge were you looking at?... didn't do anything. It hurt so bad. Whose bulge and kiss were you looking at?
• 34:12
I- Oh, they were best, best of Spencer. I wasn't, but- Yeah, that's sad... I should have been. Yeah, they're Pez dispensers. Nine of them. You're, you're going to another level when you go skull.
• 34:19
So yeah, isn't- I, it was- I'm proud. I'm, I'm-... you know, it was kinda like, you know- Do it... I just needed something. I, you know what I'm saying? I needed something- It's a sensible habit... to cheer myself up.
• 34:30
I've been, you know. It's a sensible habit. It was some lame shit. It totally is. So I have zero tattoos, but I understand the closer to the bone it is, the more it hurts. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
• 34:39
I'll tell you what, that was- So that was my skull, dude... I love it so much to go, to just get this in one time and go home and just, wow. That was not one time. Yeah, one time. Oh. Oh.
• 34:49
And I just today, uh, to be honest, I kind of wanted to show it to you guys, so I just shaved my head just before coming. [laughs] You saw me the, the other night. Yes. I has, did not have my head shaved. No.
• 35:00
Which by the way, that show blew my mind. That was a funky, funky- I actually-... funky show... when I was in traffic the whole ride here, I was listening to H.R., but it's so great. It's- I
• 35:13
didn't really, you know, I'm just so glad- That's awesome... I now know about it. I really never really knew what it was. It is some roots reggae- Yeah... just- And he, yeah... it's just amazing.
• 35:24
I mean, and, but he's down. Yeah. I mean, like physically- Insane. Yeah... uh, and- For him to be touring... but still- So how long, how long ago was it when we saw him at Shank? Uh.
• 35:34
And had, we had a, we had a really good- On-... we chatted with him for, like, 10 minutes... the, October 20- His, his shoes are in my, the f- the, the Shoes of Rock, like, collection because I take- Oh, shit...
• 35:46
yeah, I take pictures of people's shoes. 2022, I wanna say. Oh, nice. That's cool. And it's, like, gonna be a coffee table book sometime, and H.R.'s in there. But we, Mike- Michael and I sat there... JK, not Jackass.
• 35:57
Where they at, man? Uh, we sat there, we talked to him for, like, 10 minutes, and he was just blahbity, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah 'cause it was- Yeah, 'cause-... nobody, yeah... well, I, that was the thing.
• 36:05
At first, I thought he was, uh, our friend, uh, Radio Marcus. [laughs] So I had, like- Yeah... approached going like, "Hey." And then as I, like, got closer, I'm like, "Oh, it's not you.
• 36:17
But you're the guy I'm here to see." Yeah. You know? So yeah, even awesome. Mm-hmm. Oop, like this, when he was a bit more up and- Oh, yeah. Oh, awesome. Yeah, that was a good picture. [laughs] You're welcome. Exactly.
• 36:32
I was like, "Here, take my phone." [laughs] I was like, "Please take, take my picture, please." Take my picture. I'm... Ooh. And there's, like a- Where is that? Shank. Shank. Oh, it is Shank. Yeah. Nice. Yeah.
• 36:42
But yeah, good show. So that was- Poor Shank Hall... what? Poor Shank Hall. Shank. Poor Shank Hall. That's what I did. Why does, why does that sound like- Dick Dale- 2022... the last time I was there.
• 36:51
Now he's passed away... all right. Oh, it's, uh, so it's post-COVID kind of. I saw... Oh, Dick Dale passed away? I didn't know that. Yeah, like, probably four years, five years ago maybe.
• 36:57
I saw, uh, Johnny 5 was in my last show at Shank Hall. Oh, yeah. John 5. I am John 5. I'm John 5. What a great show. All right, everybody. Well, uh- That's it... we did it again. And, uh- Oops...
• 37:09
thanks, thanks to Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah, uh, The Neighborhood Bicycle Shop, and- Sam D... Longhorn Bicycles. What a guy. Sam, Sam, Sam D in the studio with the new ink, and, uh, yeah, always awesome- Good to-...
• 37:20
to see Sam. You guys- Yeah. Thank you, man... I see all the time, but it's still good to see you. It's raining out. Still good to see you. You guys are so great. Thank you. I have to go home in the rain. It might melt.
• 37:26
I don't know about that. It might have stopped. Don't. I could melt. Don't do it. All right. Don't do it now. Don't, don't do it.
• 37:35
  [rock music]
