- 0:01Hello and welcome to the Christian.
- 0:04We've podcast another episode and another interview today.
- 0:08I have the great honor of interviewing actual professional
- 0:13wrestler. So for those who aren't aware, I
- 0:16think most of you are aware at this point.
- 0:18I'm a massive wrestling fan have been for many, many years since
- 0:22I was very young. And yet to be able to interview,
- 0:26an actual wrestler is something special for me.
- 0:28So yeah, Our current guest today goes by the name, Matt Rivera or
- 0:33Matt Saxon and he is a professional wrestler, a rapper
- 0:38actor and more recently a YouTuber as well.
- 0:42Welcome to the show. How you doing?
- 0:45You have done your research. Oh yeah II.
- 0:48Don't cut Corners. My friend.
- 0:50I'm doing well, thank you so much for having me and thank you
- 0:53for that. Wonderful intro.
- 0:54That was that was nice. That's my supposed.
- 0:57It's my pleasure is my pleasure. Now, I'm gonna jump right into
- 1:01this because like I said to you just before we don't have you
- 1:03for long. So I'm gonna do my very best to
- 1:06really just kind of put you over and kind of get everyone up to
- 1:09speed with you. Now, we'll start with the, I
- 1:13don't know if we want to call it elephant in the room basically.
- 1:17Matt Rivera kind of came to fame sort of around sort of 2013,
- 1:22when you appeared on TLC's Extreme Cheapskates, right?
- 1:27And for anyone who doesn't know, this is one of those.
- 1:29Reality TV shows where they basically just kind of film a
- 1:34bunch of stuff, making you look bad and then kind of laughing at
- 1:37you and stuff. And normally, you know, I kind
- 1:40of watch these programs and I think like, yeah, you know, it
- 1:43is what it is, if you like this sort of thing, right?
- 1:46But I obviously came across this clip and then I came across you.
- 1:51Well, Cody KO, and no miller reacting to it as part of their
- 1:55series. That's cringe, right.
- 1:57And I kind of felt differently about this. because, On one
- 2:02hand, I was like, okay, I can see the funny side of it is
- 2:05funny if you watch it. It's like, you know, if you know
- 2:09anything about professional wrestlers, like, you know,
- 2:10people like Mick Foley and stuff, you know, that, you know,
- 2:13trying to save money on the road as a regular thing.
- 2:15But you kind of take it to like, the nth degree, right?
- 2:18Right. Yeah.
- 2:19I've asked you questions about this in live streams and stuff,
- 2:24but for those who don't know, obviously, you did this.
- 2:29You agree to do this now, Leslie.
- 2:32It was a case of you know here's another way to maybe get myself
- 2:35known, get myself out there. You know you're trying to get
- 2:38signed and I guess one of the questions I wanted to ask you
- 2:41right off the bat is, did you get the TNA audition like
- 2:47through that TV show? Or was it kind of a sort of
- 2:49thing where like you already were going?
- 2:52And they factored that in terms a little bit about that?
- 2:55That's hard hitting questions right off the bat, I like it.
- 2:59Um, so I was kind of a weird Situation.
- 3:02I was training at a few different places at the time,
- 3:04like it's weird because I always have to break down the show a
- 3:07little bit. So in the episode, you see me
- 3:10training with Joel Maximo over in Brooklyn, New York.
- 3:13Now, I've been there a couple of times but I've trained at a lot
- 3:17of different places, so you know, a lot of people ask me
- 3:20all, that's your trainer. Mike well, I have like four
- 3:22different trainers, you know, and I go to all these different
- 3:24places but obviously the show makes it look like.
- 3:27Okay, it's just this sword right?
- 3:29Only this way. Just set up in a certain way,
- 3:32but I did have I was very fortunate that I did have an
- 3:36opportunity in the works. However, I feel like the show
- 3:40may be sped up that opportunity that makes so I had something in
- 3:45the works but once they got on board it was like all right it's
- 3:49definite and it kind of changed the way it looked.
- 3:51I had a singles try out as opposed to, you know, inviting
- 3:5420 wrestlers to come over and do a tryout.
- 3:57I was going to say I was very surprised by that because I've
- 4:00heard about tryouts for major companies and stuff and
- 4:03typically you know it will be behind the scenes thing or maybe
- 4:08they might even try you out as a dark match on a show or
- 4:10something like that but like this was actually as you say
- 4:16like a proper match and stuff then you got like Kurt Angle
- 4:20right there watching you the whole time I mean plus the
- 4:23cameras I mean must be really really nerve-racking and
- 4:26everything grimly extremely no pun intended with the you know,
- 4:30Extreme Cheapskates but Yeah, it was extremely stressful because
- 4:36you kind of picture what a typical tryout should look like.
- 4:40And I knew this wasn't going to be typical because of the
- 4:43cameras. You know, they want to capture
- 4:44certain elements of what that would look like.
- 4:48So in my head in my head, this isn't going to be you know, take
- 4:5010 bumps, run the ropes. You know, it's not going to be
- 4:53like drills or anything like that.
- 4:54So I didn't really know what it was going to look like it.
- 4:56I would say that's the only thing that I wish was a little
- 5:00bit different with the outcome. I don't mind that it didn't turn
- 5:03out the way I had hoped, but I kind of wish they didn't really
- 5:08break down how the filming was going to be of the tryout.
- 5:11So I didn't know what to expect at all.
- 5:14You know, like, Chris Sabin, just like, all right, we're
- 5:16getting in the ring and we're gonna do a couple things.
- 5:18All right, you know, like that's it and when it was over it
- 5:21seemed like it was over so fast and I'm just sitting there like,
- 5:25damn, that's it, that was my opportunity and it's done, you
- 5:29know, C and this is one of the things as well.
- 5:31What chimp Got that clip because, you know, as I told you
- 5:34before, I'm a massive wrestling fan and I looked at it a bit
- 5:36differently. Like I saw the fun side of it
- 5:39and then I just see the look in your face and like the way they
- 5:42and I'm like shit, man, like I just really felt for you because
- 5:47I know how much it meant for you, you know.
- 5:49There's so many wrestlers out there that are trying to, you
- 5:52know, get it to its. I mean, it's a very
- 5:54oversaturated Market. It's very hard to like, make
- 5:58yourself different, in some shape or form and like, As hard
- 6:03as it is to say just being a good wrestler isn't really
- 6:07enough. It's like you have to have the
- 6:09Charisma and you've got a, you know, be a marketeer.
- 6:14I mean especially in 2020, you know, you got to be great on the
- 6:17social media, you've got to be almost like selling your gimmick
- 6:21kind of 24/7. So the game has changed, the
- 6:25rules have changed and that's not to say that, you know, you
- 6:29haven't got those things because I firmly believe that.
- 6:32Why I'm always supporting you like Curry, I genuinely believe
- 6:36that aw or something like that is in the cards for you in the
- 6:39very near future. I really just think it's a case
- 6:42of when rather than if, right. And this is kind of why I wanted
- 6:47to start with this and move more towards that.
- 6:49Because as far as I'm concerned like yeah, this was a funny
- 6:53thing. I mean, this was seven years
- 6:54ago, don't forget right, long time ago, things change people
- 6:57change and you know, I kind of feel like The joke is now over
- 7:03kind of thing. It's like, okay, haha.
- 7:05But like ticked, if we just got to take it back to the Cody KO
- 7:09thing like normally in that series, it's people just being
- 7:13ridiculous and you know, like why wouldn't you laugh at them
- 7:18kind of thing, you know, but I think a lot of the time when
- 7:20you're laughing at people on the internet know thought kind of
- 7:24goes into like the actual person or or like how they feel
- 7:28whatever, right? And as I've gotten older I've
- 7:31kind of I don't really laugh at people anymore.
- 7:34I'm just like I just think about that.
- 7:36I'm not well in my hardest times.
- 7:38I wouldn't have wanted that right.
- 7:40Right. Takes a different level of
- 7:42empathy and I think like you said when you get older kind of
- 7:45clicks a little more you become a little more sensitive to those
- 7:47things. Yeah.
- 7:47I know right? Yeah, I think what's different
- 7:52in this situation as well as like, that was actually
- 7:56actually. You like, I've asked you
- 7:57obviously, as I said in live streams and stuff before and
- 8:01you've said, yeah, that's Smee I wasn't putting on that's how I
- 8:04thought and a lot of the time when you get asked these
- 8:08questions to this day you sort of say that you've kind of toned
- 8:12it down somewhere. Maybe you're not as cheap as you
- 8:15were right real quick to where did you get?
- 8:18That kind of mentality. Like, is that something you gain
- 8:22from like a relative? Or is that just something that
- 8:24kind of just happened over time. And I'll be honest with you, I
- 8:27don't know and and this is I hope my family.
- 8:32Offended if I say this but we grew up very poor, all right?
- 8:35Um, we lived in the inner city of Manhattan for maybe 15 years
- 8:39or so bounced around. So it we didn't grow up with
- 8:42much. And I've always with someone who
- 8:44appreciated what I had. I'm not a materialistic person,
- 8:48like, a lot of people look in the studio, not.
- 8:50Oh, you know, he's spending money left and I'm like, no, no,
- 8:53no, I love. These are gifts and and this is
- 8:55kind of what has become my work at this point.
- 8:57So I do have to invest in it a little bit.
- 9:00But um, I'm just I'm not a very Very materialistic person.
- 9:03Like even my sugar. Mama will tell me how I wish you
- 9:06dressed a little bit better. I, you know, I don't you.
- 9:09We were in the store the other day.
- 9:10I, you know, I was telling the story about the pop since you
- 9:12just like, just get yourself some pops and there's just,
- 9:16there's something about just buying something materialistic
- 9:19for myself. That just seems like a waste
- 9:21like my, I don't want to do that.
- 9:23And there's things that I was doing that.
- 9:25It wasn't until someone else brought up to me.
- 9:27Like man, what are you doing, bro?
- 9:29Like that's kind of gross so that's kind of weird.
- 9:32And I did my, all right, I guess I didn't really think about it.
- 9:34Like I had a roommate and I used to store a whole bunch of empty.
- 9:39Water bottles, like ridiculous, two, drawers of empty water
- 9:42bottles, so I can just fill it up in the sink and keep it
- 9:44going. So, what about like to messed up
- 9:46or destroyed? And I had a backup.
- 9:48It doesn't 20 water bottles, just empty in the fridge and
- 9:52he's just like, oh, this is weird.
- 9:53Like it's not healthy and I'm like, always and a healthy, man.
- 9:57He told me he's like, listen after wild plastic breaks down
- 9:59and I'm like, that's fine, you know.
- 10:02I'm like but thinking about how Mike.
- 10:03Alright of TLC captured me opening up the fridge and it was
- 10:0620 empty water bottles at me, like I was a freak, you know,
- 10:09it's weird. But that's just the way I've
- 10:12always been. I just I've always been very
- 10:14conscious of money and spending it and not wasting.
- 10:18I'm one of my biggest pet peeves in the world which was not
- 10:21mentioned on the TLC. Show is throwing out food.
- 10:23Well, kind of I said, yes. And you know what, though?
- 10:27But there's some people that are just like, if you don't like it
- 10:29do it ottoman. It doesn't matter how much I
- 10:31don't like it. Provide sustenance to me.
- 10:35If it, if it's just extra nutrients, then I'm gonna have
- 10:38it. You know, I grew up with the
- 10:39same thing. If my grandmother would have
- 10:42seen me do that distend of me. And I just it's and it's built
- 10:48in. It's like ingrained in my head
- 10:49like somebody other stuff. I get it.
- 10:51Um, it's going to sound funny, but I grew up with really,
- 10:53really bad allergies and when I was a kid, I would just have a
- 10:57pile of tissues just like right next to my pillow and like, I
- 11:01think about it now. Oh Mike, that's kind of
- 11:02disgusting but again it's what I did Growing Up So looking at it.
- 11:08Oh my God, I didn't really see the problem of having a pile of
- 11:12dirty tissues and just reusing them over and over again.
- 11:15And I know it sounds disgusting but especially when I was a kid
- 11:18like I would wake up in the middle of the night, my nose
- 11:20would bleed. That's how bad like.
- 11:22Oh wow. Okay, so I would always just be
- 11:24like boxes of tissues, I would go through all the time but
- 11:27another thing people like oh you know how much tissues is one man
- 11:31have to go through? I My allergies were that bad,
- 11:33that it was just like constant out.
- 11:36Why didn't you got, like, handkerchief or something?
- 11:38You know what? And again, it's got a sound
- 11:40funny. I just never thought of it until
- 11:42someone was like, oh, she got around her.
- 11:43She okay, fair play and also and this is going to sound really
- 11:47ridiculous and I don't mind saying it looking a little
- 11:49foolish but I almost was like handkerchiefs.
- 11:51That's kind of gross and I think about it now I'm like all right
- 11:55Matt but you can use the same tissues over and over again,
- 11:58pretty sure that's the same thing or even more gross, right?
- 12:01Okay. Moving it forward.
- 12:02Like just kind of one final question on on on this to tie
- 12:07this part of it up. Sure.
- 12:08You got a lot of pushback. You know, you've got these two,
- 12:10guys on the internet, taking the mick out of you.
- 12:12Now you turn that into something like you smart business minded
- 12:16person, you go. Okay.
- 12:17I'm going to embrace that. You made a YouTube channel,
- 12:20which you had before that you were doing content before that
- 12:22be, you really kind of gave it a push.
- 12:25When these clips started to be released back in 2019, on TLC's.
- 12:33And then obviously the reaction happened, so you embraced it,
- 12:36you do reactions to their reactions and so on and so forth
- 12:39right now. Presumably, you got a lot of
- 12:43pushback. Maybe you like often is the case
- 12:45when when people like Cody KO or someone else on the internet
- 12:50makes a reaction video at someone that person typically
- 12:53gets a lot of. Hey, did you get like a lot of
- 12:56pushback just out of nowhere? I woke up.
- 13:00What was the General kind of consensus of stuff that we're
- 13:02getting? That was on the more negative
- 13:04side and the positive side as well?
- 13:06Yes, I'll give you the whole scoop.
- 13:08You actually mentioned, some really interesting stuff that I
- 13:11haven't really Publicly said, so I want to touch on that a little
- 13:15bit. So when Extreme Cheapskates
- 13:18first came out, I don't know. The episode itself may have came
- 13:22out in like 2014 or maybe 2013, I don't know.
- 13:26I think I might have filmed it in 2013 and something like that.
- 13:29But anyway, when it first happened, I didn't really
- 13:32embrace it at all. Like at all.
- 13:34It wasn't something that I thought to myself this is going
- 13:38to be my claim to fame. This is going to be, you know,
- 13:41I'm the cheaper. Wrestler.
- 13:42Now, I was like, no, no, I'm a wrestler who's cheap.
- 13:44But I'm not the cheap wrestler. I was the number one attraction
- 13:47and no one was going to tell me otherwise, but I'll wake up.
- 13:50You could just cut you that like, surely as a wrestler, you
- 13:54must have thought at some point, even then, like, surely I can
- 13:57use this. Yeah, I've just been on
- 13:58television, I can use this to maybe leverage it and maybe I
- 14:02could even go to a company be like, hey, I was on TV.
- 14:05Give me some more TV time or we'll wait.
- 14:06I don't know. Will turn into an angle or
- 14:08something? So that is what I thought.
- 14:11I just But I can still do it as the number one attraction that
- 14:15sexy that was kind of my struggle there.
- 14:17I was like, no, no, this is my gimmick.
- 14:19I'm the number one attraction, Matt Saxon, and then this is
- 14:22money and the funny thing is it was that gimmick Works.
- 14:25People love the number one attraction gimmick in just
- 14:28doesn't have worldwide Fame, you know it doesn't it did number
- 14:35one attraction that's great, you know did great on the
- 14:37independent scene it was fantastic but I should have
- 14:40smartened up back then and then Like hey Matt no more number one
- 14:43attraction. You're not the number one
- 14:44attraction anymore, just embrace the cheap wrestler and I didn't
- 14:48do that. And I think that's where I
- 14:49dropped the ball for several reasons because I'm that Saxon.
- 14:54People can find me on the internet, you know?
- 14:56Like people who are like, oh let me search this guy.
- 14:58This video is funny. No one was Finding Me.
- 15:00I didn't blow up. People would recognize me at
- 15:02this, you know, on the street or at the grocery store, people
- 15:06would say, oh, you were on that show, right?
- 15:09Right. But I feel like I never
- 15:11properly. I handled it back then.
- 15:14So what happened was TLC decided to maybe back in 2019 like you
- 15:20had mentioned. They decided to repost it on
- 15:22YouTube and that's where that's where things got crazy.
- 15:26I noticed right away, you know, people contacting me on YouTube.
- 15:29Hey, aren't you the guy? And you know what?
- 15:32I looked at my sugar. Mama, I said not again, I messed
- 15:35up years ago. Not again, here we go.
- 15:37I'm the cheap wrestler. Now, I am embracing this, I will
- 15:41say hi to the people. People, if they want to talk
- 15:43about the TLC episode, we'll talk like whatever I am
- 15:46embracing this fully because another thing that I haven't
- 15:50mentioned much on YouTube. So this is pretty cool.
- 15:51This is one of the first podcast I've done, you know, since
- 15:55everything's blown up something that I found very interesting
- 16:00have kind of lost my train of thought a little bit there.
- 16:03Oh, what was I saying? I was just kind of rambling a
- 16:05little bit huh. I lost myself.
- 16:10I mean, you're on your own, the theme.
- 16:11Of this Extreme Cheapskates thing and like, kind of like to
- 16:14push back afterwards and then, you know, it sort of embracing
- 16:18it and like now as opposed to back when it happened.
- 16:22Yeah, my brows. I was up so late last night,
- 16:25just editing and whatnot, and I'll get to that later.
- 16:28But so my mind's a little. But anyway.
- 16:31Yeah. So when it came out, I was like,
- 16:33no, I'm embracing it. I changed my name on social
- 16:35media, Matt right here, at CLC. You know, do the whole thing.
- 16:40I had not of I hadn't heard. Heard of Cody KO at the time, I
- 16:43had no idea who he was, but a lot of friends of mine like oh
- 16:46my gosh, look at this funny video.
- 16:48Look at this video and I watched it on my.
- 16:50Alright, this video is full of hilarious, you know, I don't it
- 16:53doesn't bother me that people find it entertaining.
- 16:56I think it bothers me. I wouldn't even use the word
- 17:00bother me it it's a little Annoying.
- 17:03I think at times when some people are like, oh you, you
- 17:07cheap could I have to watch my language on this?
- 17:10All right. Cool.
- 17:11You cheap bastard. You know like you're wasting
- 17:13your time here because I don't even know how to Mike.
- 17:16All right thanks you're like yeah I'm just a to that, you
- 17:20know. So it doesn't even bother me.
- 17:22It's just more like a useless. Comment, almost they don't.
- 17:26All right. But um yeah, I definitely Only
- 17:29capitalize that on this. I don't think those things
- 17:32bother me at all. Like a lot of people I read the
- 17:34comments. All you handle it so.
- 17:36Well. You know, Cody KO.
- 17:37This guy always has a smile on his face.
- 17:39It didn't bother him or no it didn't bother me at all if
- 17:42anything I think them. I'm like listen you guys are
- 17:45part of the reason why I was able to create this YouTube
- 17:47channel and make something out of it.
- 17:48So thanks, you know, I'm not offended if anything do it
- 17:52again, you know, come to think of it.
- 17:53I see. Now you say it because you often
- 17:56play like a heel which for those Unfamiliar with wrestling,
- 18:00terminology means, bad guy. And you play a bad guy on the
- 18:05independence, quite quite regularly.
- 18:07So I guess you would be pretty used to getting abuse and sort
- 18:10of just taking it in your stride.
- 18:11You like it really doesn't do anything to me and I think a lot
- 18:15of people look at it like some people feel bad for me they're
- 18:18like oh, you know people are so mean to you, my I could care
- 18:22less like I know being in any sort of Spotlight, you're gonna
- 18:26get it. It's just the way the world is
- 18:27and this is the thing. Like, I felt that way for you
- 18:30when I first saw this clip and then I saw that Cody KO thing
- 18:32and then I saw everything that you're doing on YouTube and and
- 18:36what you're doing now. I mean, for those who don't
- 18:38know, Matt, basically regularly does live streams, he plays
- 18:42games, he reacts to things like you know, the latest WWE
- 18:46Battlegrounds game or something like that or you know, you do
- 18:49q&as where you actively just take on questions.
- 18:52I've asked you some questions myself, you know, and I think
- 18:56that's great way to give back and to be You to actually have a
- 19:00following, there are fans there, there are people that regularly
- 19:02tune in that wanna help you support you.
- 19:06I think one of the coolest things that you do, which I
- 19:09think has a lot of legs particularly because of, you
- 19:12know, wrestlers such as the Young Bucks, doing, they're
- 19:16being the Elite Series. You're doing this sort of Series
- 19:19where you regularly talk about interactions you've had with,
- 19:22you know, famous wrestlers such as nonzero, or you know, other
- 19:27wrestlers like that. And I think that that's a great
- 19:30way to give back a good, you know, people really like to have
- 19:34like a looking or a lens into, like, the business and how it
- 19:38works behind the scenes because everyone knows that, you know,
- 19:41wrestling is not real but like the that kind of makes the
- 19:46behind-the-scenes even more fascinating, particularly with
- 19:49all the shoots that we see the even happened to this day.
- 19:52I mean, for example, when Jon Moxley left WWE, you know his
- 19:57shoot interview just blew up. Was just nuts.
- 20:00Right? So yeah, I think there's a lot
- 20:02of legs with what you've done with it and everything and how
- 20:05you've kind of, as I say that leveraged it turned it into
- 20:08something radical. That's probably a lot of the
- 20:11reason why so many people are getting behind what you're doing
- 20:14because it's like, okay he's taking it.
- 20:17Well, he's moved forward and this kind of leads me on to the
- 20:20future or to at least like what's going on right now.
- 20:26I feel kind of weird asking this question because I kind of
- 20:28already Eddie know the answer but you know every wrestler has
- 20:31different, a different way of looking at the business and I
- 20:35guess I want to know, kind of like what your main goals and
- 20:37aspirations in professional wrestling are right now.
- 20:40Because, you know, you've had a little bit of a taste that
- 20:43success you, you know, people know your name, Rand right now,
- 20:48arguably, for the first time, in many years, there's actual many
- 20:52different options. I just just to kind of lay out
- 20:55for those that were unaware. You've got WWE You've got aw,
- 21:00those are like your two main American major promotions right
- 21:04now and then you've got all these other ones who regularly
- 21:08tour in other countries. You've got like, mlw butts on a
- 21:11lot of shows in in Mexico. You've got impacts uniformly,
- 21:14tiene still there. You know, you've got New Japan,
- 21:18putting on Pro shows here. You've got famous wrestlers from
- 21:22like the UK and America going over to Japan and regularly
- 21:25working in Japan point is you've got a lot of options, right?
- 21:29So this, this is kind of a two-part question.
- 21:32Like, what are your goals and aspirations and ideally like,
- 21:36where's best for you is best for Matt Rivera Matt's exit, which
- 21:39and by the way, which which name are we going by?
- 21:42Well, that's that itself. Is a whole other question, but
- 21:45right now we'll say that Rivera, it's a weird spot because I've
- 21:48been so my full name is Matthew sex and Rivera.
- 21:52That's right. When I and I'll just do a quick
- 21:56Side Story. When I first started wrestling
- 21:58training, Inning. There was someone already named
- 22:00Rivera, there was an Antonio Rivera and they didn't want us
- 22:03to think that we were brothers. They don't see what by You
- 22:05Restless for TNA as well. Scoot, I think it's Matt Riviera
- 22:09or something. Oh yeah, but even more.
- 22:12We get confused all the time. People are like, Alden, Jerry,
- 22:16Lawler. Cut your perm.
- 22:17I'm like, no, you didn't cut my perm.
- 22:19Like that wasn't me. That happens, all died.
- 22:24I've argued with people like, no, you're that guy, Mike, I'm
- 22:26pretty sure. I know who I am.
- 22:28Last time I checked. As far as goals go, that it's
- 22:32when I first decided to start actually backtrack wouldn't let
- 22:36me really backtrack if that's okay.
- 22:38After the impact wrestling tryout.
- 22:40I really didn't know what was next for me.
- 22:44I was definitely a little distraught because I felt like I
- 22:49kind of felt like tiene wasn't able to see what I can really
- 22:54do, you know they just saw what was filmed and everything you
- 22:58saw. Was probably like 90 or 80
- 23:01percent of the interactions I had with them.
- 23:03So it wasn't like the cameras went off and I was there for
- 23:06hours and hours and hours. If anything I was there for
- 23:09maybe an hour got to talk a little bit but then we had to go
- 23:12shoot the next scene. It was about TLC more than it
- 23:15was about Impact Wrestling than my tryout.
- 23:18So like you know and I understood that I got it but
- 23:22deep down it was like man, this sucks like yeah, that was it,
- 23:25that was it, it's not you know like I just felt like that
- 23:29opportunity flew out of my hands and it was never going to come
- 23:31back and not that that was true, but that's how I felt at the
- 23:35time. So I kind of took a step back
- 23:38from wrestling. I was just like you know what,
- 23:41my goal was to get an opportunity like that and then
- 23:44see what happens. So, in my mind, I hit my top
- 23:48goal, it was to get an opportunity like that and then
- 23:51see what happens. So it really, really kind of
- 23:55sucks. But with this happening with the
- 23:58boom with the interest in the cheap wrestler, the main
- 24:00question I get. The number one question is, when
- 24:03are you returning to the right? You know, like that is the
- 24:05number one question would be. So just to just a real quick
- 24:08question on top of that as well. I was reading back and looking
- 24:11over your career and there was a point where you kind of stopped
- 24:14wrestling. So, Like briefly and then you
- 24:17start it again. Now obviously with the pandemic
- 24:20and everything it just froze, everything the war but there are
- 24:23people wrestling. There are shows going on right,
- 24:26right. So with this pause that happened
- 24:30is that something that just happened right before the
- 24:32pandemic and it's just whatever for you or is it a case of like
- 24:37you, you're kind of waiting until the right moment and then
- 24:42you're going to jump on it kind of thing, right?
- 24:46It's a tough question to say. I'm definitely one of those
- 24:49people who I take the pandemic very serious look like I really
- 24:52do. There's a lot of people out
- 24:54there and I don't, it's not me bashing anyone.
- 24:57Everyone has a different mentality and different feelings
- 24:59on it, but I'm someone who's extremely cautious during this
- 25:02time. And there are a lot of people
- 25:04who, okay, whatever I'll jump in the ring with a stranger right
- 25:08now. No problem.
- 25:09And I'm just not on board with that.
- 25:11So it's almost hard for me to think about the future because I
- 25:14really don't know what it's going to look like next month.
- 25:16No clue. It's going to be worse, if it's
- 25:18going to be better, but let's pretend the pan-islamic didn't
- 25:21happen. Let's go with that.
- 25:23So when I started this YouTube channel, well when it blew up, I
- 25:27decided okay, what this is going to be, I'm going to have a bunch
- 25:30of videos but it's going to be on my way back to the wrestling
- 25:35ring. I always have a loving
- 25:37wrestling. Yeah, and I was I always felt
- 25:40that I had something special to offer with in wrestling and it's
- 25:44more personality. Storytelling, that sort of
- 25:47thing. A lot of people ask me a great
- 25:49question and I had to really think about it, but someone
- 25:51asked me on YouTube. If you had to compare yourself
- 25:54with another wrestler who would it be?
- 25:56And I had to really think about that because and I don't mind
- 25:59saying this I never considered myself to be a great wrestler.
- 26:03Never like I'm not Kurt Angle, I don't wrestle like Chris Benoit.
- 26:07I'm not Shawn Michaels like I'm not you know I'm hell I'm not
- 26:11Kenny Omega or the Young Bucks. Like you're not going to see me
- 26:13doing springboard. I gotta say I gotta say as well.
- 26:16Don't think that that's the measure of a good wrestler
- 26:19either because either, you know like just just to give you a
- 26:21real quick example. You know like Ric Flair wasn't
- 26:26that the best wrestler ever but like he he was able to like
- 26:30command any Arena that he was in and piss people off and like if
- 26:36you take like because for me a good wrestling and this I guess
- 26:39it's subjective. You know I love to see all the
- 26:42flips all that stuff. That's great right?
- 26:44But for me a real mess wrestling match is A mixture of having
- 26:47those moves in the right places where it means something like
- 26:50making. Everything means something,
- 26:52having good ring psychology, making people almost believe
- 26:55that you do really hate each other, right?
- 26:58And, you know, having that emotion to some degree or if
- 27:03there's not like an obvious reason for you guys to hate each
- 27:06other, then the they call it storytelling.
- 27:09I guess you know in the ring where you kind of logically play
- 27:14through the match. So like Say you have two guys
- 27:17where it's not obvious. Who's the good guy?
- 27:19Who's the bad guy? Right.
- 27:21You know, I often see, Cody do this, Cody Rhodes?
- 27:24You know, he'll, you know, play the bad guy because he knows how
- 27:27to do it and he knows like when to do it as well.
- 27:32So I think for you, you know, you have that like you said,
- 27:38like yeah, I believe I have something and this is not me,
- 27:41kissing your ass. This is me saying, I believe
- 27:44that too. When I look at you.
- 27:46I see a guy who's going to make it on one of those shows.
- 27:50Like I said, it's not a question of if but when because it's all
- 27:54about like being able to see that and I think that this is
- 27:57one of the mistakes that ww-was makes is that, you know, they
- 28:00have so much talent so many guys that you're like, yeah, that guy
- 28:03that guy. But like they don't push them in
- 28:05the right way, right? And I take someone like
- 28:07keighley, for instance, they're pushing him, he's at the top
- 28:11he's, you know, he's got the NXT title but to be honest with you,
- 28:14when he had that like look with Reigns and he went like
- 28:17toe-to-toe with him and there was that I was like, that's like
- 28:21your next Rock right there. I 100% agree with you with
- 28:24keighley, I feel like is the total package.
- 28:27He has the it factor and he has a unique look, he moves
- 28:31differently to me. Keep Lee is one of those guys
- 28:35that they should be investing in absolutely point being that
- 28:38like, you know, if the company is behind you and you've got
- 28:42that right platform. And they, and they give you that
- 28:44breathing room, which is why I kind of That's why I'm more into
- 28:47aw at the moment like I still keep up with WWE or watch the
- 28:50pay-per-views whatever. But for me the week-to-week
- 28:53product with a W is better because it builds up people.
- 28:57It's logical, you know? And they give the person
- 29:01breathing room if something's working, they roll with it,
- 29:04right? And I feel like with you, that's
- 29:06what it will be. If you can come in and go, hey,
- 29:09I got this to offer and a lot, okay.
- 29:12Show us what you can do. Right.
- 29:14Right. Think that's what I could.
- 29:17You're absolutely right. And you had asked this question
- 29:19before and I tend to kind of ramble on and go a bunch of
- 29:21different directions and he's like, thank you, had asked where
- 29:25I see be myself or where do I think would be the best fit if I
- 29:29were to keep pursuing wrestling? Aw is absolutely dancer.
- 29:33I obviously would love to say WWE, you know, I want to be on
- 29:37the Wrestlemania card and all those things are true.
- 29:39But I think right now he's W would be the best fit for the
- 29:45cheap wrestler, you know, something with I guess, kind of
- 29:48a comedy gimmick at times. But also with, like you said a
- 29:52little bit more free rein of character and development.
- 29:56Because NXT WWE is the factory mass produced and and I mean,
- 30:02this is like the best ways like all major companies get to this
- 30:06point if you want to be successful, but sometimes you
- 30:09want to see something a little more, A little more fresh, a
- 30:13little more, just something different.
- 30:16And I think the cheap wrestler would fit better in aew than he
- 30:20would in NXT or WWE. No, I go to say, like, part of
- 30:24me is like, yeah, you know, you should run with a cheap Bressler
- 30:27gimmick and then go for it. Because like, why not?
- 30:29But part of me is like, you know, I've seen you doing being
- 30:32a heel going with I guess the number one attraction gimmick or
- 30:35something like that. And I feel like that's a better
- 30:38personally. I feel like that's a better kind
- 30:39of fit for you. I think you should go in there.
- 30:41Like serious and just be like, this is me, we can do the comedy
- 30:45thing later on or maybe we can even make a like a, I don't
- 30:49know. Like they're say like you were
- 30:51included in the being Elite series for argument and they did
- 30:54like little segments of you being cheap and it can be like a
- 30:56running gag kind of thing. But I just I don't I don't like
- 31:00the idea of it being your main gimmick because I think that
- 31:02just like pigeonholes you and limits, jeannot mean your
- 31:06potential and just with what you were saying about WWE.
- 31:10I completely agree. I actually The a lot of the time
- 31:13when I see that a wrestler is going to WWE, I'm like worried
- 31:16for them because like yeah back in the 90s 2000s, whatever it
- 31:22was the place to be. But now, I think there's so many
- 31:24options and I feel like they have everyone but like, not
- 31:30everyone liked a lot of people fail there and it's like, and
- 31:34it's Bobby Roode. What is he doing?
- 31:37And I I always felt Bobby Roode was Top five for me, an impact
- 31:41wrestling of all time. Haven't even seen the guy on TV,
- 31:45I know he's free easy to sit back and be low because you
- 31:49know, they will probably be lets say like I criticize them
- 31:52they'll be like, well, okay, what would you do better?
- 31:54And it's like, well, for a start, I'd have less Talent.
- 31:58They have roughly, what it is. They're too many people.
- 32:00It's an oversaturation. That's why people are Bobby
- 32:02Roode just kind of sit in the mid card and yet, there's
- 32:05nothing wrong with being in a midcard.
- 32:06Don't get me wrong but that what they do, I think.
- 32:10Kill people. And this is what I think, aw is
- 32:12better, right? If you see that a guy is like
- 32:14gradually winning you like and you expecting to get a title
- 32:17shot and then it happens, you know, all if wrestler pulls off
- 32:21a big win over someone they'll get a title shot or they'll be
- 32:24in the running. It's logical professional
- 32:27wrestling as it should be, where is WWE.
- 32:29It's like he's a really good example real quick.
- 32:32One because I don't want to take too much time on this but
- 32:34remember when Bray Wyatt as a fiend lost to Goldberg lost
- 32:38title, Right. It was dumb, it was mismanaged,
- 32:42right? But the thing that pissed me off
- 32:44the most was that, that was it, no pay.
- 32:47No pay back. No, you know, they'd never
- 32:50mentioned it again. He just went straight on to
- 32:52Cena, Goldberg went off and did his thing that was it and I was
- 32:55like well what's the point where you just buried him and then
- 32:58that's it. And a lot of the time when they
- 33:00say when you say that to them like oh well, you know, people
- 33:04have to lose and, you know, it's wins and losses don't matter and
- 33:07it's like, no, they do matter and it needs to be Fine for
- 33:10someone to lose but if it's someone that's like always
- 33:14winning. Like take Cody Cody Rhodes right
- 33:17now? Yeah, they're doing a thing
- 33:19where every week he's, you know, wrestling with the the TV title
- 33:24and it's obviously building up, he will lose it at some point,
- 33:27but he'll lose it in a big way, right.
- 33:29Imagine if like, one week, he just randomly lost it to some
- 33:32guy who's never been on the show before, like, everyone could be
- 33:37worse. Well, I, I keep saying, yeah.
- 33:40Yeah, if there's any way to put you in the pressure straight
- 33:44away, it's wrestling Cody. And I think you do an excellent
- 33:46job, you have push for that. I do probably every time he
- 33:50mentions it, I tag him in. I'm like, this guy.
- 33:53Stopped sleeping on mattresses era.
- 33:55I appreciate that, man. I really do.
- 33:56I really will happen. Then I like I said, but you will
- 34:00keep pushing to man. Oh, so I'll get to that in one
- 34:03second. Like I said, I feel like my
- 34:04mind. Just go to the and just goes and
- 34:07all crazy ways but you're absolutely right.
- 34:09I mean, I was actually just talking to a good friend of mine
- 34:11the other day about WWE storylines, right?
- 34:14All right. Vince McMahon blowing up in the
- 34:17limo, obviously, that didn't work out for a couple of
- 34:20reasons, but Vince McMahon son, being Hornswoggle.
- 34:25Like, I was like, okay, what is what?
- 34:27Compound muscle that was nice. Um, Hornswoggle also ended up
- 34:32being the, what was it? The elements team.
- 34:34Camryn has not like you guys aren't even trying like, it's
- 34:38not just funny because it's a little person.
- 34:40You got his big. Oh, it's funny because he's a
- 34:42little person. He like, no, but that's Vince's
- 34:44humor. He finds that shit. any Force I
- 34:46know I don't like maybe it was funny like, you know, early 90s
- 34:49late 80s but it's not funny anymore, it's all day then I
- 34:53think the fans are becoming more It's interesting, fans are
- 34:58becoming more a part of it. They're becoming more aware
- 35:02little smarter when it comes to the business and just you know
- 35:04what's going on behind the scenes.
- 35:06And I think More fans are becoming.
- 35:12What's the word I'm looking for? Almost, like they teach
- 35:14themselves, like, the ever, like everyone who's a fan has a
- 35:18understanding of what they feel, like they should see and WWE
- 35:22tends to drop the ball on that, even the hacker storyline.
- 35:24Like I'm curious if the hacker ends up popping up again with
- 35:28our retribution, you know, because I can kind of see maybe
- 35:32something there but the bigger part of me is like Matt the
- 35:35hacker thing is probably just done and that's it and you'll
- 35:37never see it. Yeah.
- 35:38They do that often like and it pisses me off because like there
- 35:41were talks about it being CM Punk and I'm like, oh, that
- 35:44would be amazing. But it's not the general
- 35:47consensus was that it would be a lie, a lie, right?
- 35:51My God, does that guy need to push those?
- 35:54And I think him Ricochet and Cedric are all suffering in the
- 35:58same boat. We're super talented guys, but
- 36:01you know what though? And I'll say this, I will say
- 36:03this all super talented guys but none are known for their mic
- 36:06skills, none or known for their You know, ability to cut a
- 36:10promo. And I'm not saying that they
- 36:12can't, but they're not known for it and I, and I did, I agree.
- 36:15I mean, I'm always the first to give a plug because this is the
- 36:18thing. Look, I'll criticize ww-will
- 36:20day, but I'll also give them props for like everything they
- 36:22do. Right.
- 36:22And so, we wrestlers Ricochet, Mazen worker, but not good.
- 36:26On the mic, I haven't heard a single promo, that's good.
- 36:29However, WWE problem with them is that they script everything.
- 36:34And I feel like Ricochet is not good with that.
- 36:38Certain guys are okay with it but generally speaking, whoever
- 36:42you give a script to is not good, you know, it's better to
- 36:45just let a guy, you know, have key points.
- 36:49You know, if anything I use this approach when I do my acting
- 36:52videos, I don't actually script my acting videos.
- 36:54I just have a couple of ideas, right somehow.
- 36:58Yeah. And like every great wrestling
- 37:00promo there is ever been has been like that you think of your
- 37:04Dusty Rhodes hard times or Your Hogan's, you know?
- 37:07They just, yeah, they were told her.
- 37:09Look, you've got five minutes. Tell them why they should watch
- 37:12this pay-per-view and you just fucking go for it.
- 37:14Exactly. And I think they really missed
- 37:17the ball on that, and I think with Ricochet and I was telling
- 37:19a friend, this they gave Ricochet Neville's, old, crappy
- 37:24gimmick of being a superhero. And no one.
- 37:26Oh my God. Yes, they did.
- 37:28No one wants you to come out with like wings are a cape in
- 37:30life. You know, I'm a good guy like,
- 37:34no, no. Like if you're a good guy, be
- 37:37cool. Like, that's why I like the rock
- 37:39and stone Cold War so popular because they were cool.
- 37:42No one wants to be like I'm a superhero.
- 37:44See, the thing is though. He's managed to sting you.
- 37:47Mentioned those guys because I was basically tweeners.
- 37:49I mean Austin was a bad guy who people just fell in love with,
- 37:53and he, it was his rebellious, The Rock.
- 37:55Obviously, originally a heel, same thing like, like who's
- 38:01giving hoobs Truly like an actual baby face in the because
- 38:04I remember hearing some of the old guys like cornet, talk about
- 38:07this and they say that, you know, a good guy typically, you
- 38:11know, he won't, she he'll-he'll wrestle, you know, for for honor
- 38:16and stuff like that, and I think that, that kind of a Babyface
- 38:19can exist, but it has to be logical, you know.
- 38:22I mean, like that's John Cena, you know, that's John Cena right
- 38:25there. Yeah.
- 38:26And we John Cena, that's the thing.
- 38:28Like he obviously not the most loved baby face of all.
- 38:31Time is not a big space because it was too much of that thing
- 38:34that you're saying that that nice guy shit if he would have
- 38:37played up to the hill stuff a little bit, not going bad guy
- 38:40but being like you know rolled with it people would have been
- 38:43fine because see know like in the beginning was amazing.
- 38:47Everyone loved John Cena. That's what.
- 38:49Yeah you know and it just grew into that like sick and it's the
- 38:53same with thing with what Roman Reigns like he's more enjoyed
- 38:56now because they're like okay we won't give him shitty stuff to
- 38:59say we'll just let him be him and it's like, oh actually He's
- 39:02cool. He's like you say he's a badass,
- 39:03right? And Roman Reigns is a tough one,
- 39:05too. Just because when he gets on the
- 39:07mic man, it's it's so flat. It's so flat.
- 39:10Like there's no, he doesn't even have like pitches in his voice,
- 39:14you know. It's just one flat thing.
- 39:16I'm gonna go in there and take back my yard.
- 39:19They tell him to do it like that though.
- 39:20I'm because obviously yeah I know he didn't heal promo in NXT
- 39:26and it was a different guy. It was amazing.
- 39:29And it sucks. I don't know why they do that.
- 39:32To go back to your question. Before I do consider the rock
- 39:36and stone cold, true baby faces. And the reason why is, because
- 39:40deep that it doesn't matter what they do, it matters, how they
- 39:43make you feel, they make you feel like sharing them on that.
- 39:47You wish they were your best friend.
- 39:49You want to be on their team. They are fighting the people
- 39:52that you hate, you know, like they might, okay?
- 39:56Yeah. In real life if I went and stone
- 39:58cold stunner, my boss that is not a good thing.
- 40:01Dude, that's a bad guy thing to do, but in the world of
- 40:04wrestling and when Vince McMahon is your boss, you're basically
- 40:08an angel, he might be an angel with two cans of beer in your
- 40:11hand, but you're still an angel, you know.
- 40:13So to me, they're two of the greatest baby faces of all time.
- 40:16And another great example is Eddie Guerrero, you know, Eddie
- 40:19Guerrero, like should lie cheat and steal.
- 40:21Those are not three words that should be associated with the
- 40:23baby face. But they were, you know, Moving
- 40:27forward. You've wrestled with the likes
- 40:29of if people can believe this, right?
- 40:30Wrestling fans, get ready for this Tito Santana.
- 40:34I was in 0 we mentioned before Jimmy, the soup Superfly.
- 40:38Snuka right? This was all in the same match,
- 40:43that's all. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 40:47Just just absolutely incredible. You know, you've had some Some
- 40:52pretty amazing experiences interactions for people.
- 40:56But what would you say you know, of your career so far?
- 40:59Would be like your greatest achievements and moments like
- 41:02your personal success has, huh? That's a, that's a great
- 41:05question. Definitely.
- 41:06That matches one of them because to this day it is and I just
- 41:10want to make sure I'm thinking yeah.
- 41:12It's the biggest crowd I've ever wrestled in front of it was a
- 41:15Maybe 5,000 people in Brooklyn, those like yeah it was like you
- 41:20know quite a bit of people and that I'm used to 50 to 100 maybe
- 41:25like 150, 200, tops? That's like a really good day
- 41:29but that was definitely one of them just being able to get in
- 41:32the ring with three Legends. And you know look around and you
- 41:35know, I'm in a stadium. I'm like wow.
- 41:36And that day was really cool because it was like an all-day
- 41:39event and, you know, there's people interviewing and it was
- 41:42just really dope and I feel like it was one of those.
- 41:45Those days where my cat. I'm happy to be a pro wrestler.
- 41:47Like today's a good day. Some other big accomplishments.
- 41:52I got a few obviously, obviously getting to do the impact.
- 41:55Try out is huge. So that's three right there.
- 41:59I work for a small company that decided to make me the World
- 42:03Champ. And I really appreciated that
- 42:05because I felt like it was solely on the fact that I was
- 42:09entertaining enough because I'm not a tall guy, I'm not a big
- 42:12guy or anything like that and I High flyer.
- 42:15So I always am, curious to see what's the most important aspect
- 42:20to other people, you know, is it that?
- 42:22I'm 65 because, nope, that's not, that's not a thing.
- 42:26Is it? You know, if I can rustle, like
- 42:28Daniel Bryan, or is it if I can fly like a young buck, you know?
- 42:31And I'm curious, because to me, going back with something I said
- 42:35before, is I compare myself to like an Enzo or an MVP where,
- 42:38you know, the more for their characters, not forth the ring,
- 42:41you know, and it's not that either one were bad in the ring
- 42:44like a, you didn't Watch their matches and go oh my gosh, it's
- 42:46Eva Marie. What are you doing there?
- 42:48You know, like she go pretty good towards the end though.
- 42:51Who said that? I don't know man.
- 42:53Maybe in comparison to how she was but not in the yeah.
- 42:57So like WWE and I always spread love and I don't mean to you
- 43:04know, if she were to ever see this at it.
- 43:06I mean in the nicest way possible, but I don't think she
- 43:09ever was like aiming to be the best wrestler ever.
- 43:12You know, I don't think you could seriously, you know.
- 43:15Yeah, it is what it is, what it is.
- 43:17Um, but anyway, accomplishments I would say another big one was,
- 43:21I wrestled for Northeast Wrestling and that was big for
- 43:25me because it was my hometown to.
- 43:27So that was really dope. And there was a lot of people on
- 43:29that card that I was able to pick the brains of like, Tommy
- 43:33Dreamer. Oh, wow.
- 43:35Hyper. Which oh?
- 43:37That's close. Yeah.
- 43:39You met Roddy Piper? Yeah.
- 43:42I feel like when he passed, man, like, and I'm not one to be
- 43:44long, we were like this because we weren't, but It's one of
- 43:49those people that met for a very short period of time in my life
- 43:52but made an impact made a Mark and I will never forget him.
- 43:56I thought I had a terrible match that night.
- 43:59I had a terrible match tonight. It's and you know, he came up to
- 44:03me afterwards, he saw it on my face because I just kind of said
- 44:06this morning, what did I just do?
- 44:07Like that was terrible and him, put his arm around me and he's a
- 44:12he was a character, man. Like he was Roddy Piper.
- 44:14He was sitting on a locker room and he looks at his ass.
- 44:18Oh, these lockers can speak the stories.
- 44:21They would tell. Okay, so cool man.
- 44:29Yeah, exactly, that. It's funny to say, but that's a
- 44:31moment for me to me, that's huge.
- 44:33Like, I will never forget that, you know, um, but I know we're
- 44:38running out of time here and I do want to answer something that
- 44:40you asked probably like, half an hour ago.
- 44:43Where do I see what's next wrestling wise.
- 44:46So, I'm hoping this Endemic and sooner than later, but I have a
- 44:49feeling it's something that's going to be something we deal
- 44:52with for years to come. I hate saying that but I just my
- 44:55gut feeling. However, I do want to get back
- 44:57in the ring for a lot of reasons.
- 44:59I have something that I'm going to kind of introduce on YouTube.
- 45:03It's going to be my, I guess wrestler, wish list if you will.
- 45:06There's a lot of people on the independent scene that I didn't
- 45:08get to step in the ring with that.
- 45:10I feel like I need to if I'm going to if I'm going to close
- 45:13that chapter of my life, I don't I'm very flexible right now on
- 45:17what the next? A handful of years can look
- 45:18like, but one thing I know for sure is, I love entertaining
- 45:21people. I always have a lot of people
- 45:23go. Oh, what he does is fake because
- 45:26he's an actor. I'm like, oh yeah, I love acting
- 45:27but it's not really relevant to what's fake in my life.
- 45:30I just love doing that also and I love music.
- 45:33I love making people feel something.
- 45:35So whether I was a good guy or a bad guy if people would go home
- 45:40and go, wow, I felt better. That guy was a jerk or whatever.
- 45:43Then I did my job, right? And I feel like if I can make
- 45:46somebody forget Their normal day, life for just 5 minutes, 10
- 45:52minutes and you know bring a smile to their face or make them
- 45:55feel a little pissed at me or whatever sad happy.
- 45:59That I feel like is an accomplishment for me and I
- 46:02think that that's my main goal in life and I've been able to do
- 46:05that with this YouTube channel now which is something I'm very
- 46:07thankful for but I do plan on stepping back in the ring and I
- 46:11feel like when I do it'll it'll be with a different mindset than
- 46:16when I last wrestled. So I'm excited to see where it
- 46:19goes and I do do believe like you said.
- 46:23I do believe not forget believe. I know that I have something
- 46:29that I can offer to a wrestling promotion and I feel like it's
- 46:32on them if they pick it up or not.
- 46:34Like I even well, you know you asked the question.
- 46:37I'm I've been running my mouth for too long real quick.
- 46:40How old are you right now? Oh, that's one of the, that's
- 46:44one of the big questions that I usually don't tell anybody.
- 46:46I don't know. I might have to sit See, on this
- 46:48one. I'm 32 try to write.
- 46:52See this is the thing you sound, hesitancy.
- 46:55Like you almost said before, like, oh, you know may be
- 46:59winding down as far as I'm concerned.
- 47:01You still in the prime like you've got plenty of years to
- 47:05like cough something out for yourself.
- 47:07And you know, I mean there's wrestlers that go into their 50s
- 47:1060s, even do not. I mean like there's a lot of
- 47:12potential for you. Now you say You're Building
- 47:16towards something. I'm not To like, push you for
- 47:18that. We'll save that for your
- 47:19YouTube. I will say go and subscribe to
- 47:22his channel. He creates great content.
- 47:24And, you know, I felt like there's something in the
- 47:27Rumblings with you, that you're not really revealing that I
- 47:30feel. Because to be honest with you
- 47:32every week that were JW, I might this could be it.
- 47:35He might turn up, you just never know.
- 47:37You never know. And I fully expected that like,
- 47:40I just know. And that's kind of the one of
- 47:41the reasons I wanted to get this interview as well, because it's
- 47:43like that guy was a live podcast and I believed in him And he's
- 47:48there and now no one could say anything.
- 47:51Because I believed in him day one and I do really appreciate
- 47:55that. And I get what you're saying.
- 47:58Because I think a lot of people do have that feeling that I
- 48:00could appear on a wrestling show.
- 48:02Any day of the week, they might turn on impact and see me.
- 48:04They might turn up. That's another one impact is
- 48:07another one that I think that there is a lot of potential in
- 48:10me. Going to for a couple of
- 48:12reasons. I do know a few people and
- 48:15impact n. Aw, but there's a few people in
- 48:17there that I'm All right. Maybe I should reach out to but
- 48:20beyond that. It's the story writes itself, if
- 48:23I'm an impact, right? I gotta say, as well, like,
- 48:26because I thought about asking you this, but I wasn't sure and
- 48:28I kind of figured what you would say.
- 48:30But, you know, or die's from aw. Now for those who don't know, if
- 48:35you watch the TLC clip that we mentioned earlier, you can see
- 48:39or these in the background and you guys, you know, and you've
- 48:41explained, I asked you this question, like, is that the guy
- 48:44and you're like, yeah, it's him. We, you know, it's been together
- 48:47briefly and then, For those who know he then went on to impact
- 48:50and then now is in aw and I keep racking my brains like why don't
- 48:54you just ask him just below? Hey, listen, I really want to
- 48:58make it, you know, do you think you can stop me out?
- 49:00Just to shot. So, with Ortiz is funny because
- 49:04some people, I actually didn't even realize he was in the shop,
- 49:08you know? So when someone's like that were
- 49:09teasing me so a couple of things I've only met him once or twice.
- 49:15Okay? Like and wrestling training,
- 49:17we've only I don't really know him like that at all.
- 49:21That's fine. I get it.
- 49:22Other people that I think I know a little better, like a father
- 49:25ba and impact. He's someone that I would reach
- 49:28out to but yeah, it's funny Ortiz like we we just never
- 49:34really were there. Like at the same time Stephen
- 49:38that day when we did the filming.
- 49:39It was a they got a lot of things that they shot.
- 49:42But it was very like, okay. Now you got to stand over there
- 49:44and do this. Now, you got to go over there,
- 49:46so we only brush shoulders. Extremely briefly extremely.
- 49:52So I don't even think I'm at a place where I can, you know, ask
- 49:54a favor and what even so, I mean, like, I think it's worth
- 49:58trying, you know, or like to your impact buddies with whoever
- 50:01I because, you know, some people might say, oh, isn't that kind
- 50:04of using your friends but you know what?
- 50:06Most people get their jobs through asking friends, firstly.
- 50:09Secondly, this is the wrestling business.
- 50:11And you know, at the end of the day, you're going to have to
- 50:15work for it. They can they can get you a
- 50:17shot, but you have to like prove You've and I feel like yeah it's
- 50:21been seven years since that tiene show.
- 50:23Ya got time to think a lot of time to grow.
- 50:27Think like like I said, I feel like you have a feeling and one
- 50:31thing this is less a question, but more a kind of thing that I
- 50:33just wanted to do because I thought it would be kind of
- 50:35cool. What is your message to the
- 50:40promoters to the Cody, Rhodes of the world, maybe WWE.
- 50:43Whoever this is your chance right now to be like All right,
- 50:48Madam. Please give me a show?
- 50:50Yeah, absolutely. Well, first of all for any
- 50:53company, like, if you want entertainment, if you want to
- 50:55make money, like I'm here guy, and I'm not just saying that to
- 51:00blow smoke up anyone's ass. It's just the fact, like, when I
- 51:03speak people, listen, it just, it is what it is.
- 51:05So if they're looking for someone that can Captivate an
- 51:08audience, someone who can rub someone the wrong way, or just
- 51:11kind of evoke any sort of an emotion that he wants someone
- 51:14like me because there's plenty of people that could do a flip,
- 51:17but there's not many people. That can get you to feel
- 51:19something that can suck you in. And I feel like that's something
- 51:23that I have that a lot of people don't and it's not something
- 51:25that I feel like. I know it's something that I
- 51:27have. I know for a fact and it's not
- 51:28even arrogance. It's just a fact and you can
- 51:32give a mic to 100 people and maybe three of them will stand
- 51:35out, but I'll be first on that list even in the top three.
- 51:40And that's how I wanted to end this, right?
- 51:43That it's perfect. And then that's how I feel and I
- 51:46some people say that that's arrogant, but and maybe it is.
- 51:49But I feel like listen, I'm the first one to say, I'm not the
- 51:53best high flyer. I'm not even the best wrestler
- 51:56but because of that I won't tell you right here.
- 51:59That's money that I have, you know.
- 52:02So That, you know that's all I gotta say about that.
- 52:08So to everyone particularly Cody, Rhodes, Cody Rhodes, he's
- 52:12your man, give this guy a shot because he's going to make you
- 52:15money. In fact that during all to a
- 52:20close, I mean, like, to be honest, I had tons more
- 52:22questions to ask you, but I'm just grateful to have had you
- 52:25here and to have had this, you know what so well, run another
- 52:2910 minutes. How does that concern?
- 52:30You got? You got bit more time.
- 52:31Okay, okay. Well that that works for me
- 52:34because I wanted to ask you real quick about your music.
- 52:37Oh yeah. Absolutely because you go under
- 52:40this is totally different. For those who don't know, you go
- 52:42under the name, Maverick with your rap career and you've been
- 52:44doing this quite a few years. Actually like I thought maybe
- 52:47this was a new thing, but you've been doing this awhile.
- 52:49You've released some music and stuff, talk to us a little bit
- 52:51about how you got into rapping, what it means to you and what
- 52:55your main goals and aspirations are with music.
- 52:58They're absolutely. So like I had said before, I
- 53:00definitely like to touch a different lot of branches of
- 53:03entertainment and when I was maybe like 13 years old, it's
- 53:08only through bit of a hard time as much, you know, young teens
- 53:11do. And I started writing, I started
- 53:13writing poetry and I just kind of felt like, I'm like, I love
- 53:17this poetry. But I want to, like, rip it from
- 53:19the paper and put it in people's heads and in their ears.
- 53:23Like, I just felt like I wanted to bring it to life in a
- 53:25different way. So, I started writing hip hop
- 53:28music. Now, it's funny because I've
- 53:30listened to a lot of different music.
- 53:32I'm not someone who's like, oh, I just like rap enough.
- 53:35I can listen to well, now country that's new for me, but I
- 53:38Sort of concert put me on to it and there's some like I really
- 53:42like Zac Brown Band, I don't know if you listen to them at
- 53:45all but big fan. But anyway so I started writing
- 53:48music when I was 13. First, we're first song ever
- 53:52recorded was when I was 15 years old.
- 53:54So over half my life ago, was the first time I ever recorded
- 53:57something and I just did it as a hobby at first, but again, just
- 54:01kind of like, with wrestling. I was like, nah, I have
- 54:04something that's somewhat that other people don't have.
- 54:05Let me, let me try something with this.
- 54:08This. So it's been majority of hobby,
- 54:12but a couple of years ago, I decided to really start pushing
- 54:15it and I come out with a bunch of different types of like
- 54:18hip-hop music. I did a song about the school
- 54:21shootings that were happening in the states, which got a lot of
- 54:26don't want to say popularity, because I just feel like that's
- 54:28a weird word to use it. So it got some, some attention.
- 54:31Yeah, got some attention, that's it.
- 54:33That's a better word and I love making music.
- 54:36It's probably something that I'll do.
- 54:38Rest of my life, even if it's slow because right now, I
- 54:41started something called Battle Zone bars which you probably
- 54:43have seen in. I'll talk about that very
- 54:45briefly because I can talk about it forever but it's a hip-hop
- 54:48Cipher competition. And the reason I did that was
- 54:51because just like with wrestling where I had a goal where I was
- 54:54like all right you know trying out for a major promotion as my
- 54:57top goal. My top goal for music was to get
- 55:03into this contest called teambackpack and I was like, all
- 55:07right, that's my top goal with music.
- 55:08Once I get there I'll be content so I get there and I leave the
- 55:13contest and I'm just scratching my head and I'm like that didn't
- 55:17do anything for me. You know, that that didn't I
- 55:19thought that was going to be same thing with impact.
- 55:22I thought that was going to be what put me on the next
- 55:24pedestal, you know, and I guess when I look back at both of
- 55:27those moments, It's alive. I should have been more.
- 55:32Okay with. Hey Matt you might not be moving
- 55:34up a, Maybe here's a left turn and maybe that'll eventually
- 55:37eventually get you where you want to be.
- 55:39Because I felt both of those moments in my life were very
- 55:42like, this hardening moments, you know?
- 55:45But back to the contest real quick leaving that I was like,
- 55:48you left, I left with nothing. Like I didn't have anything to
- 55:51show for participating in that and getting to that stage.
- 55:55So what I wanted to do is create something to give back to other
- 55:59people. So it's like, it's very To enter
- 56:01the contest and you end up getting a bunch of things on
- 56:03music videos. You can get free mixing and
- 56:06mastering of Oh, Wow, music. It's there's so much that you
- 56:09can walk away with that. I was like, no this is going to
- 56:13make a good hip-hop contest because it cost a lot of money
- 56:15to pursue something and entertainment.
- 56:17As you know the end up getting camera Mike's equipment.
- 56:20You know it gets to be a very expensive hobby or career and at
- 56:25this at this stage with music I think it's more about giving
- 56:29back and Creating something then, you know, I'm just going
- 56:33to make it on my own, you know, I don't, I don't need to be the
- 56:35next Eminem or anything like that.
- 56:37I just want to kind of give back and help people where I felt
- 56:41like I could have used to help you.
- 56:43No respect. That's, that's a really cool
- 56:46thing to do and not a lot of people necessarily have that
- 56:49approach and it's really cool. Do you think you would ever use
- 56:52your music like record a song as like your entrance theme or
- 56:55something like that? I totally would On once and I
- 57:01ended up using it maybe like twice and I just just know I had
- 57:05other stuff. No.
- 57:06Yeah I had other songs that I had used as entrance themes that
- 57:09I like know that just fits more like even though I recorded this
- 57:12like this is me like when I was a baby face on the independent
- 57:15scene I used Macklemore. Can't Hold Us.
- 57:18I don't know if you know that song it's a very like happening
- 57:20song. Yeah.
- 57:21Like yeah, like right away. It gets people can imagine that
- 57:25actually working as. Yeah.
- 57:26No. I think about it is and I came
- 57:29out to in like people doing This is crazy, when I was a heel I
- 57:33used two different songs. Go to be metal really, isn't it?
- 57:35Have you know what? Not even because I was more I
- 57:39wasn't an intimidating heel at all so I was more like I needed
- 57:42something with like swag and like a noxious Nasir.
- 57:45Believe the term is chickenshit Hill.
- 57:49Absolutely. And I have some great heel
- 57:50stories to like, oh yeah. Like I'll give you a quick one
- 57:54route. And I tell this to my sugar mama
- 57:56and when she when she heard I did this, she was just crazy.
- 57:59Can't do that. Under walking out as a heel one
- 58:01time. And there was a young man
- 58:03sitting in the front row who was a little overweight and he was
- 58:08eating like a Snickers bar. So I walked by him and he goes,
- 58:12you suck. So when I'm in he'll mode it's
- 58:16more, it's better to just not say anything to me.
- 58:18That's that's the smart thing. I lean in real close to where
- 58:21I'm like, all right. Only the immediate people will
- 58:23hear what I have to say to this kid so I snatch a Snickers bar
- 58:27from his hand and I looked at him and I go I just Did you a
- 58:30huge favor? And I throw him from the room
- 58:34like just like over the ring. I just Chuck it and he starts
- 58:38crying and his mom is like looking at me.
- 58:40Like, I'm the worst part. Like, I'm the devil.
- 58:42And at the time, I'm just like, I'm a heel.
- 58:45But do you want, you know, if you're going to say, I sucked.
- 58:47If you're going to open your mouth when I walk by prepare for
- 58:49the consequences and that was your consequences fat kid.
- 58:52That's how I felt at the time is now, if you do realize, you're
- 58:56not the time, it happens, like it was so bad that the Order had
- 59:01to talk to me afterwards. He goes, Matt, listen, I know
- 59:04you're just being a heel, but I'm like, and when I'm in that
- 59:09mode, I was like, I was like, yeah, that's exactly what I was
- 59:12doing. I'm being a heel.
- 59:14I'm like, so, I don't really see the problem, you know.
- 59:15Yeah. And he agreed, but she was
- 59:18really upset, so I take out two dollars good.
- 59:22Listen. You can go give this to the mom,
- 59:24but honestly, like, I'm not going to apologize.
- 59:26You know, like I agree. I couldn't agree more.
- 59:29And this is what? Again, why I think there's so
- 59:32much to use particularly as being a heel in the industry,
- 59:35like this is what we need, you know, like like so many of the
- 59:39the best, he'll bad guys are like totaled sweethearts but
- 59:43they just know to switch it on like Baron Corbin mjf.
- 59:47Oh yeah. Ante Up is a great example
- 59:49because I'm gonna be an asshole. Like, if anything, that promote
- 59:51promote, it should have been, like, we've got some pushback
- 59:55from that, but thank you so much for making me money.
- 59:57That's exactly what I did. And that's to me.
- 1:00:00The point. I'm like, no, I'm not here to be
- 1:00:02a Secretly. Nice big.
- 1:00:06He'll like, no, I want you to go home and be like.
- 1:00:08That guy was a dick and but this is my biggest struggle.
- 1:00:13I love being a heel, I love it, and I think I'm really good at
- 1:00:17it. But that sheep rustlers.
- 1:00:20What is what's bringing me to new heights?
- 1:00:24So, that is where I struggle because, again, I look back at,
- 1:00:27you know, when that when Extreme Cheapskates first came out, I
- 1:00:31saw, I was I stuck to my guns as like, no, number one attraction.
- 1:00:34That's what it's going to be, you know?
- 1:00:36Okay, I'm going to pitch you an idea.
- 1:00:38Sure. Here's what you do.
- 1:00:41You go in with the pit? The, you know, Cheapskate
- 1:00:44gimmick right, right. You get jumped out a little bit,
- 1:00:47you know, you Aggressive slowly. You like they're not taking me
- 1:00:53seriously. And then boom, he'll turn.
- 1:00:57And then that's when you see, Max axon, she come in with the
- 1:01:01gimmick, you like, yeah, you know, I'm that guy.
- 1:01:04That did that, and then suddenly nasty, horrible.
- 1:01:07And then that's the thing. Everyone would be like, huh.
- 1:01:11Now I've got a reason to like hate him, and they can also like
- 1:01:14mock you, and you'll be like feeding into it because you're a
- 1:01:17bad guy. It's just it just works it just
- 1:01:19works see I should be in the wrestling business, man.
- 1:01:22It is forever. And you know, there's been ideas
- 1:01:26that I've thrown out there that have actually happened and it
- 1:01:29kind of freaked me out, and makes me wonder like they look,
- 1:01:32read the comment. I think some company like,
- 1:01:39particular, WWE is really predictable a lot of time when
- 1:01:42I'm watching it. I'm like, yeah, I know.
- 1:01:44I just know what's going to happen.
- 1:01:45So I don't think they throw you off, but a lot of the time, it's
- 1:01:47really predictable. I think sometimes the WWE that
- 1:01:50they also don't do the predictable, like, in the way
- 1:01:53where you like know this was supposed to happen.
- 1:01:56Why didn't that happen? Yeah, Kevin Owens not winning
- 1:01:59the scene of Feud, is a good example, right there, right?
- 1:02:01You're just like, but why did you make that?
- 1:02:03Like when it should be predictable and we expect this
- 1:02:06outcome, they don't do it. Yeah.
- 1:02:09Yeah. They could be all over the place
- 1:02:10but what can you do? Thank you so much for you know
- 1:02:15you know just agreeing to be on the show making this a fantastic
- 1:02:18interview. I want to just kind of in this
- 1:02:20on. What would be you know do you
- 1:02:24have any like upcoming projects aside from the ones you've
- 1:02:26discussed anything that's upcoming that you want to tell
- 1:02:28your fans about or tell, you know, the listening audience for
- 1:02:31those who aren't aware of you? Or do you have any just final
- 1:02:35thoughts you'd like to share with us before we draw this door
- 1:02:38closed? Absolutely, I have a bunch of
- 1:02:40things going on right now, so I will share a little Bit about
- 1:02:43that out as we've discussed the YouTube channel.
- 1:02:46Just this constantly growing, which I am extremely thankful
- 1:02:48for thankful for people, like you for your support and having
- 1:02:51me, you know, do something like this.
- 1:02:53It's pretty cool. So, yeah, definitely follow me
- 1:02:57on YouTube. Matt Rivera, TLC.
- 1:03:00I am uploading a whole bunch of new things, and I'm starting to
- 1:03:03with my YouTube channel. I really want to create
- 1:03:05something that has something for everyone.
- 1:03:07Oh, you like video games? Yeah, I like video games too.
- 1:03:10Like, it doesn't have to be pigeonholed to Oh, I'm just a
- 1:03:13wrestler, you know, right? Talk about music.
- 1:03:16You like, you know, and sometimes that's a little
- 1:03:18challenging because people like art, but I don't know what to
- 1:03:21expect when I go there, which sometimes is a thing, all its
- 1:03:26own. But anyway, so always going to
- 1:03:29be doing new music. If you haven't already, YouTube
- 1:03:33Battle Zone bars. That's a, my other channel.
- 1:03:35It's all about hip hop music. So if you're into that,
- 1:03:38definitely join. But I do have a lot of new, kind
- 1:03:42of, like mini Series that I'm will be debuting on the YouTube
- 1:03:45channel. So I decided that 5K.
- 1:03:47I was like, you know, I'm gonna do some different stuff.
- 1:03:49I want to, you know, kind of expand on this even more.
- 1:03:53I did the wrestling Road stories and then I came to a point where
- 1:03:57I felt like that had exhausted its options.
- 1:04:00So I want to do cheap shots which when I first kind of
- 1:04:04tested the waters cheap shots with something I did where I
- 1:04:07just kind of showed like a cheap a quarter trick or something,
- 1:04:11silly that I did, I think, right?
- 1:04:12Yeah, I remember this and it's tough to be a little silly.
- 1:04:15Be a little comedic, but but also like know it is something
- 1:04:18you should do. It might be a good idea.
- 1:04:20You know, I think II went hitchhiking on one episode but I
- 1:04:24decided to kind of use that to test the waters and then grow
- 1:04:27from there. But I'm bringing it back in a
- 1:04:28new way. What I'm going to do is watch
- 1:04:30other people who have been on Extreme Cheapskates and see
- 1:04:34their life hacks and then try them myself the critique of to
- 1:04:39Cheapskate. Yeah, I'm gonna take it and I'm
- 1:04:41going to try it. If it's BS, if it helps, if
- 1:04:44it's, you know, changes, that's what cheap shots is going to be.
- 1:04:49So one thing that people ask me about and I wanted to wait until
- 1:04:54I felt like I needed new content to do.
- 1:04:56This is a weekly Regular Show, just about what's going on in
- 1:05:01wrestling. Going to call it a talk is cheap
- 1:05:03because it just makes sense. So, and since we're doing this,
- 1:05:08I'll even You know, I'll throw die out there right now.
- 1:05:12I would love to have you be on the first episode?
- 1:05:14What it is, is on the phone. I'm going to have different
- 1:05:18people who have podcast wrestling Enthusiast wrestlers,
- 1:05:22former wrestlers, current wrestlers referees, mad at
- 1:05:26anybody who has knowledge of professional wrestling.
- 1:05:29I kind of want to ask questions, get input.
- 1:05:32I wanted to look like a almost a Knights of the Round Table of
- 1:05:36different talents that no wrestling that can hold the
- 1:05:39Shouldn't so, you know, I'm not Raw SmackDown.
- 1:05:43Aw, everything in between, but that's something that will be
- 1:05:46happening in the next couple of months.
- 1:05:47So I'll make sure, I send you an invite for the first episode and
- 1:05:51it'll be just like similar Forum.
- 1:05:52Well, we're just shooting the shit and talking about what's
- 1:05:55going on in wrestling. I'll ask a few questions that
- 1:05:57maybe come up on the Community page on YouTube and whatever.
- 1:06:02So yeah, a lot of things going on.
- 1:06:03So make sure you subscribe, Matt, Rivera TLC on YouTube.
