- 2:51Speaker 1: Your business should not be driven just by online marketing.
- 2:57Speaker 6: You know, marketing changed, and so because marketing sh Facebook
- 3:00Speaker 6: change all of that after the pandemic, and you know,
- 3:02Speaker 6: Facebook ads started to go up, so your customer acquisition
- 3:05Speaker 6: went up. And basically customer acquisition means how much you
- 3:08Speaker 6: pay for to acquire each customer, So how much you
- 3:11Speaker 6: pay for that customer to purchase your product.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So now it's more expensive. Now you're just like going
- 3:15Speaker 1: out there saying it's her that she wants my product.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Is it hurt? So it costs more. So basically they
- 3:20Speaker 1: came up with the concept.
- 3:21Speaker 2: All right, gush, welcome back, eyl, We're back home. Legendary, yes, yes, yes, so.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Legendary eyl the legendary for sure, we should go with
- 3:30Speaker 5: that going forward.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So, you know, one of the things that we really
- 3:32Speaker 2: wanted to highlight this year was to highlight more women
- 3:35Speaker 2: entrepreneurs in the space that's killing it, especially when you
- 3:39Speaker 2: look at Black women. There was a study that Black
- 3:43Speaker 2: women are the leaders as far as the most entrepreneurs
- 3:48Speaker 2: as far as percentage wise that's starting businesses in America.
- 3:53Speaker 2: So obviously that means that there's a lot of stories
- 3:57Speaker 2: to be told and a lot of information to be
- 3:59Speaker 2: provided from a variety of different areas that might not
- 4:05Speaker 2: be traditionally highlighted in traditional business so when men just
- 4:09Speaker 2: talk about business. So the hair industry is something that's
- 4:13Speaker 2: extremely important billions of dollars from all areas from you know,
- 4:20Speaker 2: haircare products to doing hair to everything you name it.
- 4:25Speaker 2: So we have an entrepreneur in the space, Tiffany Dean.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Yes, the energy is at a billion.
- 4:37Speaker 2: CEO of Hollywood Hair Bar. We're going to talk about that.
- 4:41Speaker 2: We're going to talk about yourjourney. We're going to talk
- 4:42Speaker 2: about what you used to do, your background, your journey,
- 4:47Speaker 2: how you created a seventh figure business for yourself, haircare products,
- 4:52Speaker 2: variety of different things. I think that a lot of
- 4:54Speaker 2: people will find benefit in this episode, not just women,
- 4:58Speaker 2: anybody who's an entrepreneur who's looking to, you know, figure
- 5:01Speaker 2: things out. So first and foremost, thank you for joining us.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Appreciate it, thank.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You, Thank you guys for having me.
- 5:05Speaker 6: What an honor. I feel very honored. I've watched you
- 5:07Speaker 6: for years, and I just feel like this is such
- 5:09Speaker 6: a pinch me moment that I'm really sitting here about
- 5:12Speaker 6: to tell my story.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So this is honest.
- 5:14Speaker 4: So you said something very interesting before we started.
- 5:17Speaker 5: You said, for years you've been highlighting people's stories, but
- 5:21Speaker 5: you never got to tell your own.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Yes, so I'm excited for you to tell your own
- 5:24Speaker 4: me too.
- 5:25Speaker 1: This is the day, Yes, this is the day.
- 5:27Speaker 6: I was coming over here like this is special, Like
- 5:29Speaker 6: this is a special day.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I'm just happy to do it with you. Guys. You
- 5:33Speaker 1: know this is really really appreciate that.
- 5:35Speaker 2: So let's get into it. So all right, you're from
- 5:38Speaker 2: La Yes, born and raise. You start as a celebrity stylist.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yes, celebrity fashion stylist.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Right, and then from there your daughter has an unfortunate
- 5:47Speaker 2: event where she starts to lose her hair.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Yes, so I had a baby and she had exma.
- 5:52Speaker 6: She was like five weeks old. So you know, us
- 5:54Speaker 6: women when we have a baby, we're just praying on
- 5:57Speaker 6: that hair. You know, we want the baby to have
- 6:00Speaker 6: the most hair. We were obsessed with hair even before
- 6:03Speaker 6: the baby, sports as most black moms. And so my
- 6:07Speaker 6: baby came out with the most beautiful hair. Oh, it
- 6:09Speaker 6: was just absolutely beautiful. Her dad has fabulous hair. And
- 6:13Speaker 6: so in a nutshell, she had an exema breakout and
- 6:16Speaker 6: her hair fell out, and I, as a young mom,
- 6:20Speaker 6: felt like a failure. I didn't know what to do,
- 6:22Speaker 6: you know, because my baby was a cute baby, and
- 6:25Speaker 6: I didn't I felt like I always had to cover
- 6:28Speaker 6: her hair.
- 6:28Speaker 1: With hats and it was just a thing.
- 6:30Speaker 6: It really really messed with my self esteem because my
- 6:33Speaker 6: baby's hair fell out in the front.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And so I went on a quest.
- 6:36Speaker 6: And that's when I started on my quest to really
- 6:37Speaker 6: find hair care products that could work, that will work
- 6:40Speaker 6: on your baby all the way up until you know
- 6:43Speaker 6: me that were all natural and there was nothing on
- 6:46Speaker 6: the market. And that's when I started my journey on
- 6:49Speaker 6: trying to figure out what I could do in the future.
- 6:52Speaker 6: At that time, I was a celebrity fashion stylist. I
- 6:55Speaker 6: worked as a celebrity fashion stylist from the age of
- 6:57Speaker 6: eighteen years old.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And I was a real deal so stylist. You know
- 7:00Speaker 1: how we have these not the Instagram stylist, but stylist.
- 7:06Speaker 6: So my mom actually and my dad, I grew up
- 7:10Speaker 6: in an entrepreneurial household. My mom is a celebrity fashion designer,
- 7:14Speaker 6: and my dad ran the business side of the business.
- 7:17Speaker 6: So my mom actually worked with all the legends from Madonna,
- 7:21Speaker 6: you know, Oprah Winfrey, just all everyone. Yes, she no,
- 7:26Speaker 6: she was actually is a fashion designer. Yes, her name
- 7:29Speaker 6: is Angela Deine of Deansign. Amazing fashion designer. I don't
- 7:32Speaker 6: know if you guys remember that cover of Essence magazine
- 7:35Speaker 6: with all the women on it, Jada, Queen Latifa, Loretta
- 7:39Speaker 6: Devine and they all had on the beautiful colors. My
- 7:41Speaker 6: mother designed that, yes, yes, yes, Madonna's bullet bra.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Madonna's bullet bra.
- 7:47Speaker 6: My mother design that, yes before Jean Paul Gautier, and
- 7:51Speaker 6: you know he took her design. So you know, we
- 7:54Speaker 6: talk about things like that, and so I've known about
- 7:56Speaker 6: the things about business and the insize and the outs
- 7:58Speaker 6: and you know that type of thing.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Since I was a young girl.
- 8:01Speaker 6: My mom and dad were the first black owned boutique
- 8:04Speaker 6: owners on Melrose Boulevard in the eighties, so I literally
- 8:07Speaker 6: grew up walking up and down Melroe's Boulevard. And I
- 8:11Speaker 6: really grew up in the entertainment industry, so you know,
- 8:13Speaker 6: the world of like lights, camera action, that type of
- 8:15Speaker 6: thing is my world. The hair was never my world,
- 8:18Speaker 6: but that was my world because I loved hair. Every
- 8:21Speaker 6: black girl loves hair. We all feel like we're hairstylists.
- 8:24Speaker 6: You know, you talk to any black girl, she's like, Nope,
- 8:26Speaker 6: you're gonna use this product, do.
- 8:28Speaker 2: This, do that.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So, in a nutshell, I always had a love for hair.
- 8:31Speaker 6: My grandmother gave me a very She was like the
- 8:34Speaker 6: kitchen you know, the kitchen beautician type thing. So I
- 8:36Speaker 6: would have my grandmother press my hair and that was
- 8:39Speaker 6: my thing when I was younger, and that was our
- 8:40Speaker 6: thing together. So beauty was always something that I loved,
- 8:42Speaker 6: and beauty and fashion kind of go hand in hand.
- 8:45Speaker 6: But it's just very weird, and you know, I have
- 8:46Speaker 6: a lot of haters in my styling world because they're.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Like, how she going beauty and do that? Like how
- 8:51Speaker 1: did she do that? She's from our world.
- 8:52Speaker 6: But I feel like beauty and fashion all kind of
- 8:54Speaker 6: go hand in hand. But yes, go to back to
- 8:56Speaker 6: your question. Born and raised in California, Los Angeles, California, Hollywood,
- 9:02Speaker 6: West Hollywood.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Beverly Hills. That was my spot. I went to Hamilton
- 9:06Speaker 1: High School with all the stars. We all grew up together.
- 9:10Speaker 6: From Omari, Ti Dollar Sign, Nipsey Hustle. I actually was
- 9:15Speaker 6: Nipsey's first stylist. I did Hustle in the House music video.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Okay, yes, I was the.
- 9:21Speaker 6: One that did like his first like marathon that first started,
- 9:24Speaker 6: you know, with the Crenshaw T shirts and so we did.
- 9:27Speaker 1: You know, he came to me and was like, I
- 9:28Speaker 1: want you to do me a T shirt and put
- 9:30Speaker 1: a six. Oh just sick, Oh.
- 9:35Speaker 6: My god when it got that cousin T shirt done,
- 9:38Speaker 6: and it's just like the history from there. But yes,
- 9:40Speaker 6: I was his first stylist that did all of those
- 9:42Speaker 6: the first music videos, first photo shoots and all of that.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Me and him was very very very very close, very
- 9:48Speaker 1: very close.
- 9:49Speaker 4: This is interesting.
- 9:50Speaker 5: So when you're starting out as a stylis, because this
- 9:52Speaker 5: is an easy at eighteen, are you leveraging the relationships
- 9:56Speaker 5: that you saw growing up from your mom or are
- 9:58Speaker 5: you creating your own relationships?
- 10:00Speaker 6: Shit, I'm so glad you asked that, because you know,
- 10:02Speaker 6: everybody said, oh, well, her mom, her mom. So yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 6: of course my mom and dad they put me on
- 10:06Speaker 6: of course, like any parents would, right. But I really
- 10:09Speaker 6: went into the industry. They got me with my first
- 10:11Speaker 6: styling agency, the Crystal Right Agency. She was the black
- 10:15Speaker 6: agent back in the day and gave me an opportunity.
- 10:18Speaker 6: There was a lot of big time agencies back in
- 10:19Speaker 6: the day. They wouldn't give black girls, you know, the
- 10:21Speaker 6: opportunity to be a stylist on their roster. But she
- 10:24Speaker 6: gave me an opportunity because she didn't know my mom
- 10:26Speaker 6: and knew me from being young. But I killed it
- 10:28Speaker 6: after that, you know, she gave me the opportunity, and
- 10:30Speaker 6: then I went into the world of just stiling and
- 10:33Speaker 6: really building my own name for myself. I did work
- 10:36Speaker 6: with my mom definitely and helping her and you know,
- 10:38Speaker 6: styling her stuff, but I definitely went out and made
- 10:41Speaker 6: a name for myself. Who's the first big that you
- 10:43Speaker 6: got Ooh my goodness, Tyresee Tyrese Gibson.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Back back in that time, Tyresee I've worked with.
- 10:50Speaker 6: I've worked with everybody though. I've worked with Queen my Tifa, Tyreese.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Gibson of course, who else?
- 10:56Speaker 6: Oh I got to always get a tongue tied, Angela Bassett,
- 10:59Speaker 6: Tyler Perry, Patti.
- 11:01Speaker 1: La Belle, Shaka Khan, you know, a lot a lot
- 11:03Speaker 1: of people. Brandy.
- 11:04Speaker 6: I grew up with Brandy on the Mosia Show. So
- 11:06Speaker 6: I'm like a real deal, real Hollywood girl, you know,
- 11:09Speaker 6: grew up under Mesa Hilton, brim Misa Hilton. I love you, Misa.
- 11:14Speaker 6: I would send this to you, Mesa shout out to
- 11:16Speaker 6: that one. Yes, Mysa was my mentor when I met Misa.
- 11:20Speaker 6: She worked with my mom when I was younger. I
- 11:22Speaker 6: met Misa at twelve years old. When I saw Misa
- 11:24Speaker 6: for the first time, I was like, oh my god,
- 11:26Speaker 6: I just want to grow up and be like her.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You know, like she was just my everything. Mesa is
- 11:30Speaker 1: the bomb. So yeah, I really was under like a
- 11:32Speaker 1: lot of big ones, you know.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So I really, So how do how does stylists make money?
- 11:36Speaker 1: Because oh, that's a good question.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Is it like Retaina somebody? All right? So you worked
- 11:41Speaker 2: with Tyres right, yep? And he pays you two thousand
- 11:46Speaker 2: dollars a month, or does the record label pay you
- 11:49Speaker 2: or does he pay you, Like I just need an
- 11:50Speaker 2: outfit for this, I'm gonna pay you just for this, right?
- 11:53Speaker 2: How does that work?
- 11:54Speaker 6: So that basically is a little bit of all of
- 11:56Speaker 6: what you're saying, But it depends on how you if
- 11:58Speaker 6: you're a freelance stylist or if you work in another agency.
- 12:01Speaker 6: So if you work going into agency, everything that you're
- 12:03Speaker 6: supposed to everything should go into your agency, and so
- 12:06Speaker 6: your agency will either give you a retainer if that's
- 12:09Speaker 6: something that you work out, or you work per job.
- 12:11Speaker 6: A lot of times the production will pay for the job,
- 12:13Speaker 6: you know, so whatever they're working for, it's not a
- 12:16Speaker 6: lot of times the celebrity. So if they're with a
- 12:18Speaker 6: record company, if they do like a photo shoot or
- 12:20Speaker 6: they do something, it's normally whoever is putting on that
- 12:24Speaker 6: shoot that's paying for it. But then a lot of times,
- 12:26Speaker 6: you know, nowadays with social media, the celebrities are paying
- 12:28Speaker 6: for a lot themselves because they want to, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 6: just be flying their regular life. But I really I
- 12:35Speaker 6: retire from styling five years ago, and I'm so thankful
- 12:38Speaker 6: that I did because I feel like now with.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Social media, are they really getting paid?
- 12:44Speaker 6: I mean the top ones are when you're working for stars,
- 12:47Speaker 6: and you know, you're working for different things, but a
- 12:49Speaker 6: lot of people and everybody wants a favor now, they
- 12:51Speaker 6: want something for a post or you know, it's like,
- 12:53Speaker 6: come on, we got to make some money out here.
- 12:55Speaker 6: So I really dipped at the right time. But during
- 12:58Speaker 6: my entire career from eighteen years old, I worked under
- 13:02Speaker 6: really big stylists as well, you know, and I really
- 13:04Speaker 6: learned the ropes Stacy young Timothy Snell. I worked under
- 13:08Speaker 6: really really big stylist at the time, Susan Moses, and
- 13:12Speaker 6: from there they really taught me. You know, at a
- 13:15Speaker 6: certain age they were just like, I don't want to
- 13:16Speaker 6: do this anymore. So when I went in eighteen, I said,
- 13:19Speaker 6: by the time I'm thirty, I know, I'm gonna probably
- 13:21Speaker 6: be over this, you know, and I need something else
- 13:24Speaker 6: that I.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Need to go into, like a business. So what is
- 13:26Speaker 1: that going to be?
- 13:27Speaker 6: So I was continuously thinking of what I wanted to do,
- 13:31Speaker 6: and everybody does fashion, you know, and then you have
- 13:34Speaker 6: Fashion Nova and then you have all these other fashion
- 13:36Speaker 6: brands and all this.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So I was like, you know what passion is not
- 13:39Speaker 1: what I want to do.
- 13:41Speaker 6: And I of course saw the craze of lace front
- 13:45Speaker 6: wigs on our women.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Lord Lord, Lord, And I'm not hating on the lace front.
- 13:52Speaker 5: I'm I'm just not a fan of lease.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I'm not a fan.
- 13:56Speaker 6: I'm exactly because you know, this is the thing we
- 14:00Speaker 6: need to understand that these stylists are out here doing
- 14:03Speaker 6: things that are really not cool. Alaye's front wig is
- 14:06Speaker 6: something that was created for the Hollywood world, for a movie,
- 14:10Speaker 6: for a black woman to have consistency and continuity with
- 14:12Speaker 6: her hair.
- 14:14Speaker 1: That's what it was for. The stylist took it.
- 14:17Speaker 6: And now we're wearing them to bed, We're wearing them,
- 14:19Speaker 6: you know, for a month, We're you know, we're wearing
- 14:21Speaker 6: them too much.
- 14:23Speaker 1: We're wearing them, only wearing them.
- 14:24Speaker 6: So it's like it's gotten overwhelmingly just a lot and
- 14:28Speaker 6: a lot of the women don't know what they're doing.
- 14:29Speaker 1: So a lot of women have no edges.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Or their hair is totally bald, or they're just continuously
- 14:36Speaker 6: covering and covering, and we have like it's like an
- 14:38Speaker 6: epidemic at this point with our women, and no one's
- 14:42Speaker 6: really talking about it because everyone's very embarrassed about it.
- 14:45Speaker 6: You know a lot of the women they just cover,
- 14:47Speaker 6: you know, cover and go. And so my home model
- 14:49Speaker 6: with Hollywood Hair Bar is you know, why cover the
- 14:51Speaker 6: problem when.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You can fix it? Because you can fix it.
- 14:54Speaker 6: A lot of women are told that they cannot. And
- 14:57Speaker 6: so with the right products and the right ingredients and
- 14:58Speaker 6: the right things, grow your hair. And so that's basically
- 15:02Speaker 6: what I've.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Done, and we have helped over a million women at
- 15:05Speaker 1: this point. So I'm really excited.
- 15:07Speaker 5: So you made the pivot, though, because that's not easy. No, right,
- 15:11Speaker 5: Like you've done something, You've watched your mom do something, yes,
- 15:15Speaker 5: in fashion, but you make the pivot.
- 15:17Speaker 4: But you said that you grew up.
- 15:18Speaker 5: In an entrepreneurial household every day, So what kind of
- 15:21Speaker 5: lessons did you see that made you feel sufficient and
- 15:25Speaker 5: comfortable to make that pivot?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Right?
- 15:27Speaker 6: So I would say going through the industry and really
- 15:30Speaker 6: seeing that it wasn't built for me to win that
- 15:34Speaker 6: I was basically creating a brand for every single artist
- 15:39Speaker 6: that I worked for. You know, I worked with Jeremiah,
- 15:42Speaker 6: I worked with French Montana. I've worked with some really
- 15:44Speaker 6: big names right for twenty years, Like for Real, that
- 15:48Speaker 6: was my bread and butter I made money. I made
- 15:50Speaker 6: good money, one of the top stylists in Los Angeles,
- 15:53Speaker 6: really made a name for myself.
- 15:54Speaker 1: But I knew that that could only take me so far.
- 15:57Speaker 6: It's like they're able to you know, the stars that
- 15:59Speaker 6: we're working with, they're able to go and retire on
- 16:02Speaker 6: what we've created for them. So what is left for us,
- 16:05Speaker 6: the people that are on the other side of the
- 16:08Speaker 6: of the camera.
- 16:10Speaker 1: What does our future look like? Because we're creatives as well,
- 16:13Speaker 1: and so for me, I always, you know, the branding
- 16:16Speaker 1: and coming out with brands.
- 16:17Speaker 6: And things of that sort. I've been doing that since
- 16:19Speaker 6: a young girl. So it was not like the first
- 16:21Speaker 6: brand I came out with. I had like a T
- 16:23Speaker 6: shirt line, a really cute handbag line, and everything that
- 16:26Speaker 6: I did when I was younger.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I mean I made it in Cosmo, you know, Gilimber magazine.
- 16:29Speaker 6: Like I really would always take it to the hill,
- 16:32Speaker 6: but then a celebrity would call, or you know, I'd
- 16:34Speaker 6: have to go back and really do my real job,
- 16:36Speaker 6: which was styling, and that takes so much of your
- 16:39Speaker 6: time and effort. So I was basically I would say
- 16:43Speaker 6: that my last show that I did right before the
- 16:46Speaker 6: last show that I did. I was watching this video
- 16:49Speaker 6: of Dame Dash and he was talking, and you know,
- 16:52Speaker 6: we all love Dame Dash, and he was just dropping
- 16:55Speaker 6: so much knowledge, and I was like, Dang. I was
- 16:57Speaker 6: sitting with somebody and I said, Dang, if I could
- 16:58Speaker 6: get under Dame Dash, I would be a beast. Even
- 17:01Speaker 6: though I was already a beast, I said, I would
- 17:03Speaker 6: be a beast, like a real beast. Two weeks later,
- 17:05Speaker 6: I get a call for a show with Dame Dash
- 17:09Speaker 6: and I'm.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Like, oh my god.
- 17:09Speaker 1: They called me.
- 17:10Speaker 6: They said, dam Dash is one of the houses. So
- 17:11Speaker 6: I did a show called the Next Big Thing.
- 17:14Speaker 1: It was like a music competition.
- 17:15Speaker 6: Show on BET and it was Dame Dash. Theytoven and
- 17:19Speaker 6: Tina Davis were the you know, the judges. And so
- 17:23Speaker 6: I was with Dame Dash for the next eight weeks
- 17:26Speaker 6: and we became super cool. I loved Dang and I
- 17:29Speaker 6: actually just ran him to in the airport and told
- 17:31Speaker 6: my story.
- 17:31Speaker 1: He was like what he couldn't believed it. He was
- 17:33Speaker 1: so excited, so happy for me. But I told him,
- 17:35Speaker 1: I said, you gave me a lot of knowledge during
- 17:38Speaker 1: that show. You didn't even know it.
- 17:39Speaker 6: You was dropping knowledge on all those young kids. But really,
- 17:43Speaker 6: I was sitting there soaking it up as well. And
- 17:46Speaker 6: one of the things that stood out to me was
- 17:48Speaker 6: he said he was talking to the kids.
- 17:50Speaker 1: He was like, what did little Wayne do? How did
- 17:52Speaker 1: a little Wayne just blow? Blow?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Blow?
- 17:54Speaker 1: You know what little Wayne did?
- 17:55Speaker 6: He said, littl Wayne flooded the internet, he flooded everything.
- 17:59Speaker 6: And that stuck with me and I was like, that's
- 18:01Speaker 6: exactly what I'm going to do, and that's what I did,
- 18:04Speaker 6: and we'll get to that next when you asked me
- 18:05Speaker 6: that question. But that's what I did. But I did
- 18:07Speaker 6: it organically and that was the secret to my sauce.
- 18:11Speaker 6: I didn't do it through pain. So yeah, yeah, let's
- 18:14Speaker 6: go into that. Okay, So basically in a nutshell when
- 18:16Speaker 6: I came up with Hollywood her, but I was sitting
- 18:18Speaker 6: on that show and soaking up all the knowledge and
- 18:21Speaker 6: literally sitting there with my laptop all my downtown, making
- 18:24Speaker 6: my you know, my logo, creating my website.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Those types of things I really had learned.
- 18:30Speaker 6: There was an amazing family friend I have, and she's
- 18:32Speaker 6: a really amazing online market Her name.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Is Nicole Cooper.
- 18:36Speaker 6: She told me a long time ago, she said, Tippy,
- 18:38Speaker 6: if you want to work make it on the internet.
- 18:40Speaker 6: You need to learn how to do everything yourself first.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Learn how to do your logo, learn how to do
- 18:45Speaker 6: your website, learn how to market learn how to all
- 18:48Speaker 6: the things that you need so that you can then
- 18:51Speaker 6: you know, once you do better and you can hire people,
- 18:53Speaker 6: you can know how to manage them properly.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So that's what I did, and so I learned how
- 18:58Speaker 1: to do everything.
- 18:58Speaker 6: And so because I'm a creator and a creative and
- 19:00Speaker 6: a brander and a brand you know, that's really what
- 19:02Speaker 6: I do. I was able to get on different tools
- 19:05Speaker 6: and really learn. So I made everything. So I sat
- 19:07Speaker 6: there made all my stuff. And that's the reason why
- 19:10Speaker 6: they say my intellectual properties are worth so much because
- 19:12Speaker 6: I literally a behind every single thing in the brand, right,
- 19:16Speaker 6: not just the product, but the logo, the color, the
- 19:19Speaker 6: you know, the marketing, the way we talk to the customer,
- 19:20Speaker 6: all of that. So in a nutshell, when I launched,
- 19:24Speaker 6: I basically went into engagement share groups. At the time,
- 19:29Speaker 6: I don't know if you know, but like you know,
- 19:31Speaker 6: the share for share type thing.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And this was like in twenty eighteen.
- 19:34Speaker 6: I got into an engagement share group that basically I've
- 19:37Speaker 6: been around for ten years and they basically would drop
- 19:39Speaker 6: on this group chat called kick I think it's called
- 19:42Speaker 6: Kick or kik. It's like we can have a group
- 19:45Speaker 6: and you can have up to fifty people in the group,
- 19:47Speaker 6: and you can have all these different rooms. And so
- 19:49Speaker 6: they would break you off on the rooms depending on
- 19:51Speaker 6: how many followers you had. And then when they say drop,
- 19:54Speaker 6: you drop, and you would drop in your basically your ad,
- 19:56Speaker 6: your picture and your you know you and your you know,
- 20:00Speaker 6: your your your comment, your post whatever. They would post
- 20:04Speaker 6: it and you would post theirs and it would stay
- 20:06Speaker 6: on there page for an hour, two hours maybe, and
- 20:07Speaker 6: you would do this all day long. And I became
- 20:10Speaker 6: a nut, a fanatical with it. And I was making money.
- 20:13Speaker 6: I mean the first month I made like fifty thousand
- 20:15Speaker 6: dollars and I was like, oh my.
- 20:17Speaker 1: God, I mean fifty thousand dollars in one month. This
- 20:19Speaker 1: is something, right.
- 20:20Speaker 4: What was the product?
- 20:21Speaker 6: This was the hair growth serum, the hair Okay, yeah,
- 20:23Speaker 6: So I knew how to talk to the consumer, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 6: I knew how to basically ask them or opened into
- 20:29Speaker 6: question in my comment section, you know, in the area
- 20:31Speaker 6: where you have your your your what is it called?
- 20:34Speaker 6: Oh my god, I'm losing my thought.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You know on the comments your common.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Section, Yeah, I guess you're coming. Well, not your comment section,
- 20:40Speaker 6: but your your caption.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Your caption gotchy.
- 20:43Speaker 6: So in the caption I would tell them, like I
- 20:45Speaker 6: knew how to get to the woman's psyche, a black
- 20:47Speaker 6: womans psyche, because I am a black woman and I
- 20:49Speaker 6: know that what we want, right, I asked them, do
- 20:51Speaker 6: you want to grow your hair? Do you want to
- 20:52Speaker 6: grow you were your daughter's hair, So I knew exactly
- 20:54Speaker 6: what to ask them. And then I would say, comment
- 20:56Speaker 6: me below. They would comment me below, and then I
- 20:58Speaker 6: would go in and I would say check your Then
- 21:00Speaker 6: I would sell my butt off in the DM and
- 21:02Speaker 6: be like, this is what we do.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Da da da da.
- 21:04Speaker 6: These are how many reviews we have. This is the ingredients,
- 21:06Speaker 6: This is how fast it's gonna work. Because we have
- 21:07Speaker 6: a product that works in seven to fourteen days, you're
- 21:09Speaker 6: gonna grow your.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Hair, regardless alopecia.
- 21:12Speaker 6: You know you're gonna see a little fuz you're gonna
- 21:14Speaker 6: see something in seven to fourteen days, which is kind
- 21:16Speaker 6: of unheard of with an all natural product. So I
- 21:18Speaker 6: was the one that came to the game with that,
- 21:20Speaker 6: and you know everyone now they try to say seven
- 21:21Speaker 6: fourteen days, but that was something that we came with.
- 21:23Speaker 6: No one had ever said that before. So the people
- 21:25Speaker 6: were blown away. And I was able to show them
- 21:28Speaker 6: women with long hair, black women with long hair. So
- 21:31Speaker 6: I got to the psyche of the women and they
- 21:32Speaker 6: bought into it.
- 21:34Speaker 1: They bought into it.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Like this in the beginning, like they did. Then we
- 21:39Speaker 6: continue that. I did that for about fifteen months. About
- 21:42Speaker 6: fifteen months, about twelve months in, I started getting calls
- 21:46Speaker 6: from marketing agency. I'm like, marketing agency, I believe in
- 21:49Speaker 6: zero dollars for marketing. I'm making fifty thousand. Because I
- 21:52Speaker 6: was like, consistently, you know, and I had about one
- 21:54Speaker 6: hundred thousand to my website every month. And this is
- 21:56Speaker 6: just for no money, right, not having to pay for anything.
- 21:59Speaker 6: So I thought I was doing well. They consistently bombarded
- 22:02Speaker 6: me to a certain extent, and then once I found
- 22:04Speaker 6: out who they were, I was like, okay, I'm gonna
- 22:07Speaker 6: give them a try. We started in and I'll never
- 22:10Speaker 6: forget this day. They'll be like, okay, so you're gonna
- 22:11Speaker 6: start you have to pay us five thousand dollars a month,
- 22:14Speaker 6: And I was like, you know, when you start making
- 22:16Speaker 6: money like five thousand, I mean five thousand a month
- 22:20Speaker 6: the group. Yeah, no, no, no, this is to actually
- 22:22Speaker 6: be with the big time marketing agency.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Now.
- 22:24Speaker 6: So now we're less thany You're fifteen months in, you're
- 22:26Speaker 6: making fifty thousand a month. You're feeling like you cool
- 22:28Speaker 6: for free being out. Now you're leaving a DMS. Now
- 22:31Speaker 6: you're leaven dealing with people directly. Now you're onto the
- 22:34Speaker 6: bigger you know, social media marketing agency that now they
- 22:38Speaker 6: can run ads on Facebook and Instagram and YouTube and
- 22:41Speaker 6: Snapchat and all these things, you know. So I'm like, okay,
- 22:44Speaker 6: So they're like five thousands a month, I'm like okay, fine.
- 22:46Speaker 6: So then they said, and I said, and then what
- 22:48Speaker 6: I have to pay for the ads? They're like yeah,
- 22:51Speaker 6: so like, well how much is that? So they said, like, uh,
- 22:54Speaker 6: I thought I was gonna do two fifty a day.
- 22:55Speaker 1: No, this was my thought. I'm gonna give y'all two
- 22:57Speaker 1: fifty a day facebo yeah, Facebook ad two fifty a day,
- 23:00Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna make five hundred.
- 23:02Speaker 6: Then I'll to two fifty a day every day, you
- 23:04Speaker 6: know what I mean? Two fifty a day every day. No,
- 23:06Speaker 6: that wasn't what it was. He was like, you know what,
- 23:07Speaker 6: You're gonna have to just give us free rain to
- 23:09Speaker 6: just spend the money.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god.
- 23:12Speaker 6: I'm like, okay, well, how much you're gonna spend like
- 23:13Speaker 6: maybe fifteen hundred dollars a day, maybe two thousand. We
- 23:15Speaker 6: have to figure it out. We have to test first,
- 23:17Speaker 6: we have to do others. So I'm like, okay, fine.
- 23:18Speaker 6: So I put it in God's hands and I'm like, well,
- 23:22Speaker 6: you know You've come this far, so I think you've
- 23:24Speaker 6: done everything right. What I did was I did everything
- 23:27Speaker 6: right because I studied for ten years. I studied from
- 23:29Speaker 6: twenty eight to twenty eighteen on online marketing the things
- 23:32Speaker 6: to do right. So when I came out with the website,
- 23:34Speaker 6: I have my pixel set up, so my pixel was
- 23:36Speaker 6: capturing all of that free organic you know, traffic that
- 23:40Speaker 6: I was having that came to the site. So that
- 23:42Speaker 6: was like golden, That's what That's the step that everybody skips.
- 23:48Speaker 6: You gotta put in the work. You can't just put
- 23:50Speaker 6: Facebook ads and think that like that's gonna blow you
- 23:53Speaker 6: up the way I blew up.
- 23:54Speaker 1: No.
- 23:54Speaker 6: The reason why we had such success because I really
- 23:57Speaker 6: put in the work.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I was doing those shares from five to freaking twelve
- 24:02Speaker 1: am every day for fifteen months, and I put in
- 24:05Speaker 1: the work.
- 24:05Speaker 6: So by the time we got to the ads, they
- 24:07Speaker 6: had all of the data that they needed to get
- 24:10Speaker 6: to my customer. So at that point it was like
- 24:13Speaker 6: I went from making fifty thousand dollars a month to
- 24:17Speaker 6: the first month with the ad agency, we did a
- 24:19Speaker 6: million dollars.
- 24:21Speaker 1: So he return, yeah, exactly right.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Then every month consistently after that we did two million dollars.
- 24:29Speaker 6: Then our peak was three point four million dollars, which
- 24:32Speaker 6: is so funny that I didn't even know that. I
- 24:34Speaker 6: just found that out a few weeks ago when I
- 24:36Speaker 6: was looking through my own data, because you know, when
- 24:39Speaker 6: the number.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Get so high, you just be like, But basically I
- 24:43Speaker 1: was shocked.
- 24:44Speaker 6: To know that we did three point four one in
- 24:46Speaker 6: a month. But basically we did that consistently for two years.
- 24:49Speaker 6: We did at least two million dollars a month for
- 24:50Speaker 6: like two years, and that was during the entire pandemic.
- 24:53Speaker 1: That was during you know, all the time.
- 24:54Speaker 6: People online, So we were able to build up a
- 24:57Speaker 6: really amazing like tribe of women you know that really
- 25:03Speaker 6: loved the product and loved the fact that there was
- 25:05Speaker 6: a black woman behind it, the fact that I owned
- 25:07Speaker 6: it one hundred percent, because they couldn't believe that in
- 25:11Speaker 6: the beginning. It was hell on wheels. You know, our women,
- 25:13Speaker 6: we're like, yoh, she is scammed. And so there's a
- 25:16Speaker 6: lot of stuff still out there online today that's still
- 25:18Speaker 6: living from those days. But basically, in a nutshell, we
- 25:21Speaker 6: had some things that we went through. I went through
- 25:23Speaker 6: for film house situation where they were shipping all my
- 25:26Speaker 6: orders backwards. So as soon as we got to the
- 25:28Speaker 6: million dollar months, I'm like, okay, I need a f
- 25:30Speaker 6: filming house. My house has filled, everything's filled, I have
- 25:32Speaker 6: everybody working. I mean, it's just got it out of hand.
- 25:34Speaker 6: I'm like, I need a f filminghouse. So we got
- 25:35Speaker 6: the fulfillment house and they basically started shipping all my
- 25:39Speaker 6: orders backwards.
- 25:41Speaker 1: So if we were.
- 25:41Speaker 6: Two weeks behind at that point, it was so they
- 25:43Speaker 6: screwed up all my stuff for a good six to
- 25:46Speaker 6: eight weeks.
- 25:47Speaker 1: So a lot of the trolls then had to say, yes,
- 25:50Speaker 1: she ain't shipping any ride and you know, so it
- 25:52Speaker 1: got really really crazy.
- 25:53Speaker 6: I really was taken over by how much hate is
- 25:57Speaker 6: online I mean it's crazy, right. So I knew because
- 26:01Speaker 6: I've dealt with celebrities. I grew up in that world.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I knew.
- 26:04Speaker 6: So I was like, I'm not reading any of this.
- 26:06Speaker 6: I'm not responding. Nobody will ever hear me respond on
- 26:09Speaker 6: the trolls.
- 26:09Speaker 1: And this and that.
- 26:10Speaker 6: So at this point, now you start seeing the comments change.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Now you start seeing people, oh my god, I love
- 26:17Speaker 6: this product.
- 26:18Speaker 1: It's working. This is my comp these are my reviews.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I mean, you know there might before and now can
- 26:22Speaker 2: we go there for a sec?
- 26:23Speaker 5: Because the marketing, that's one thing, right, but nothing works
- 26:28Speaker 5: without the product boom right, And so I saw you
- 26:30Speaker 5: you had this quote you said, sometimes the right CEO
- 26:33Speaker 5: with the right product makes for the perfect formula. Yes,
- 26:36Speaker 5: so let's talk about the process of you getting the product? Yeah,
- 26:40Speaker 5: because that's not easy to have something. That's all natural
- 26:43Speaker 5: to have something. And even when you post a question,
- 26:46Speaker 5: do you want your head to growl?
- 26:47Speaker 4: Right?
- 26:48Speaker 5: That's triggering for a lot of people right now, it's like,
- 26:50Speaker 5: of course I want my head. Of course I want
- 26:52Speaker 5: to So what was the process of you actually creating
- 26:55Speaker 5: this product? I'm sure there were scientists and labs and
- 26:58Speaker 5: all right, you come from a background in fashion and beauty.
- 27:02Speaker 5: So how did this come about the actual product?
- 27:05Speaker 6: Well, I have an angel that is the woman behind
- 27:11Speaker 6: the Secret Sauce that works with me, and she basically
- 27:17Speaker 6: came up with this phenomenal Like basically, you have a manufacturer.
- 27:20Speaker 6: So in the world of beauty products, you go to
- 27:23Speaker 6: a manufacturer right to formulate the product for you. Okay,
- 27:27Speaker 6: you say, this is what I wanted to be in
- 27:29Speaker 6: the end, and so they go back and they do
- 27:30Speaker 6: their magic and they come to you with samples and this,
- 27:33Speaker 6: that and the third I didn't do that.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I went backwards.
- 27:35Speaker 6: So I had a woman that I was dealing with
- 27:37Speaker 6: that I met online that had this amazing product that
- 27:40Speaker 6: she was basically that she had and so she reached
- 27:43Speaker 6: out to me. Somehow we met each other online. She
- 27:47Speaker 6: shared with me about this phenomenal product that she had
- 27:49Speaker 6: and I'm like, oh my god, are you kid me.
- 27:50Speaker 6: She's like, yeah, and I can work with you because
- 27:52Speaker 6: I think you got you got it. She's like, I'm
- 27:54Speaker 6: on your website, I mean on your social media page. You're,
- 27:57Speaker 6: you know, a celebrity fashion stylist. If you want to
- 27:59Speaker 6: do a business, this is a great business to get
- 28:00Speaker 6: into and.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, that's a great idea. Girl.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I sat on Hollywood hairbar for five years, the concept,
- 28:07Speaker 6: the idea, the everything, and she would call meverybo another year, girl,
- 28:12Speaker 6: I'd have made a million dollars now. And she's just
- 28:14Speaker 6: selling it whatever, you know, just selling it.
- 28:15Speaker 1: To her people.
- 28:16Speaker 6: I'm like really, She's like, yeah, just online through her
- 28:19Speaker 6: website or whatever.
- 28:20Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh my god.
- 28:21Speaker 6: So I continue to work with her and formulate other
- 28:27Speaker 6: things and work on the serum. But the serum, I literally, God,
- 28:32Speaker 6: send me an angel. I'm her angel, and she's my angel.
- 28:34Speaker 6: So I have an amazing manufacturer that's a black woman.
- 28:39Speaker 1: So that makes a big difference.
- 28:42Speaker 6: Then, you know, going to a different type of you know,
- 28:45Speaker 6: manufacturing plant that just make a product. And that's the
- 28:47Speaker 6: difference why our product is so good and why it
- 28:51Speaker 6: works compared to all the things that are on the
- 28:53Speaker 6: shelf in the store or even things that sell online,
- 28:56Speaker 6: is because we have a woman that is a black
- 28:59Speaker 6: woman that understands exactly what we need. And I also
- 29:01Speaker 6: am that woman as well. So we basically she formulated
- 29:05Speaker 6: the serum and then me and her formulated everything else.
- 29:08Speaker 2: How'd you call it?
- 29:09Speaker 6: The name, so Hollywood hair Bar. Of course, Hollywood is me.
- 29:13Speaker 6: I'm from Hollywood, California, And because Hollywood is so indebted
- 29:19Speaker 6: in me, I wanted to use the word Hollywood because
- 29:21Speaker 6: I knew that it would pop all over And one
- 29:24Speaker 6: of our top spots is Brooklyn, New York, and New
- 29:26Speaker 6: York and you know the East Coast, Like the East Coast,
- 29:29Speaker 6: y'all love Hollywood Hairbar like so much.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, like I definitely need. I
- 29:32Speaker 1: wish I needed, like I need a store out here,
- 29:35Speaker 1: you know what I.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Mean, Like seriously, But basically, the Hollywood name I knew
- 29:38Speaker 6: would resonate all over the world, and it would resonate
- 29:41Speaker 6: from who I was, because you know, celebrity stars, that
- 29:44Speaker 6: whole thing.
- 29:45Speaker 1: And then hair bar was like, yeah, now come to
- 29:48Speaker 1: the hair bar.
- 29:49Speaker 6: Let me give you some you know, like let me
- 29:51Speaker 6: help you get some inches, let me help you grow
- 29:52Speaker 6: your hair. So the concept of the Hollywood hair bar,
- 29:56Speaker 6: the women just ate it up. They ate it up,
- 29:58Speaker 6: and they eat it up all over the world. I
- 29:59Speaker 6: mean we tell everywhere Africa, Canada, you know, the UK, Switzerland, Netherlands,
- 30:04Speaker 6: oh my god, everywhere. And so that name really rung
- 30:08Speaker 6: really rung. Well, but like I said, I'm a brander.
- 30:10Speaker 2: So the Hollywood Hair Bar, most people would assume that's
- 30:13Speaker 2: a brick and mortar hair salon.
- 30:16Speaker 6: Yes, so we are going to have hair growth so
- 30:18Speaker 6: because we are a COVID baby, you know, we're COVID
- 30:21Speaker 6: birth business. We came out with it at that time,
- 30:24Speaker 6: but COVID came, so I'm coming with it now and
- 30:27Speaker 6: I'm basically releasing a hair growth bar.
- 30:30Speaker 1: So like basically Hollywood hair Bar, hair.
- 30:33Speaker 6: Growth salon where you can come and get different treatments
- 30:36Speaker 6: to grow your hair.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Brick and mortar, yes, in La.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 30:39Speaker 2: So all right, so let's let's unpack this a little bit.
- 30:41Speaker 2: So you come up with the product, yes, and then
- 30:45Speaker 2: you how many followers did you have on social media
- 30:48Speaker 2: at this time?
- 30:49Speaker 1: Good question.
- 30:50Speaker 6: So Hollywood Hair Bar's page, I was able to build
- 30:54Speaker 6: it up to I started with like sixty thousand, you
- 30:57Speaker 6: know when when we like like once, I really was
- 31:00Speaker 6: going in with Hollywood Hairbar.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You know, I started as a hair page.
- 31:03Speaker 6: It was course called Hollywood hair Bar, but before the
- 31:05Speaker 6: product was launched, I was able to build it up
- 31:08Speaker 6: just with black women wanting to see and love long hair.
- 31:11Speaker 3: You know.
- 31:11Speaker 2: So you just started it as like a look book page, yes,
- 31:15Speaker 2: off of your own.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Page or else, started a new page.
- 31:18Speaker 2: But you didn't know nobody knew that she was behind
- 31:20Speaker 2: it exactly. No.
- 31:21Speaker 1: And that's the other thing I was. You know, I
- 31:23Speaker 1: come from the entertainment industry.
- 31:25Speaker 6: I have not asked one star, not one celebrity to
- 31:29Speaker 6: do a post for me, to do anything for me.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I just was like, I don't want to ask them
- 31:33Speaker 1: for anything.
- 31:34Speaker 6: I want them to look at me and see me
- 31:37Speaker 6: as their equal, and when they see my brand.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Say, oh my god, I'm so proud of her.
- 31:42Speaker 6: You know, how can I help or how can I
- 31:44Speaker 6: post something for you now? So basically I didn't start
- 31:46Speaker 6: with any celebrities, any influencers, just literally with my core
- 31:50Speaker 6: knowledge of knowing what the people want to see. So
- 31:53Speaker 6: what I did well as a celebrity fashion stylist was
- 31:57Speaker 6: to give the people what they want to see. So
- 31:58Speaker 6: I created images, right, So within creating those images and
- 32:02Speaker 6: those looks, you give people something to aspire to look like.
- 32:06Speaker 1: And so I took that same concept and put.
- 32:08Speaker 6: It in a beauty brand basically, and so I made
- 32:11Speaker 6: the product poppy and pretty and you know, like candy
- 32:15Speaker 6: to where the women just they wanted you know, they
- 32:16Speaker 6: sit it on their bathrooms and they're like, this is
- 32:18Speaker 6: actually the decoration.
- 32:19Speaker 1: You know, they love it. It's very, very beautiful.
- 32:23Speaker 6: Poppy, and I wanted to really market something to the
- 32:27Speaker 6: black woman in the haircare world that was bombed.
- 32:30Speaker 2: You did you have the product before you started the
- 32:33Speaker 2: page or you had the page before you started.
- 32:35Speaker 6: I've always known about the product, so I knew what
- 32:36Speaker 6: I was doing. Yes, so I did it.
- 32:39Speaker 2: When did I launch? When did you launch? I'm asking
- 32:43Speaker 2: you this because we actually had a similar situation. We
- 32:45Speaker 2: had a page called fashion Wave before we had the
- 32:50Speaker 2: idea for Ernie Alisia. The original idea was that it
- 32:53Speaker 2: was wow, it was a look for page. You gra
- 32:56Speaker 2: actually grew it to like twelve thousand followers. It didn't
- 32:59Speaker 2: take off the way we wanted it. Yeah, that was
- 33:01Speaker 2: the idea was to grow the page and then get
- 33:03Speaker 2: the page to the point where I had one hundred
- 33:05Speaker 2: thousand million followers, and then we were gonna have small
- 33:09Speaker 2: businesses like advertise on it.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Mm hmm exactly.
- 33:13Speaker 2: That was the idea behind it.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 2: So okay, so you build it and they will come. Strategy,
- 33:19Speaker 2: you build the look book first, not selling anything, right,
- 33:21Speaker 2: just building an organic following in a community.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And at what point do you feel like it's time?
- 33:28Speaker 2: Yes?
- 33:28Speaker 6: Right, So I just really had the on social media.
- 33:33Speaker 6: You really got to have some kind of secret sauce
- 33:35Speaker 6: to get your page popping, you know, you really do.
- 33:37Speaker 6: You have to know what the people want to see.
- 33:38Speaker 6: You have to know what they.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Want to hear.
- 33:40Speaker 6: Because I am a and this is funny, but you
- 33:44Speaker 6: know we have influencers now, right, social media influencers, but
- 33:49Speaker 6: the stylist, celebrity stylists, lebrity hair, stylist, makeup. We were
- 33:54Speaker 6: the original influencers before social media, you know what I mean,
- 33:59Speaker 6: the one that you would say, okay, you got to
- 34:00Speaker 6: do this, that that this was gonna make you pop word,
- 34:02Speaker 6: you know. So we really have the juice if we
- 34:05Speaker 6: all like the back of the day ones, you know,
- 34:07Speaker 6: like me that's been around for forever, the real ones,
- 34:09Speaker 6: if we just put our expertise to the table with
- 34:12Speaker 6: social media, because we're like little many producers walking around here,
- 34:16Speaker 6: you know, because we are real in the industry, worked
- 34:19Speaker 6: on you know, all the sets and all those things.
- 34:21Speaker 6: So if you have the eye, a lot of times
- 34:23Speaker 6: it has to be that eye, you know, to know
- 34:26Speaker 6: what's gonna pop, Like I know what to post to
- 34:29Speaker 6: make those women go crazy.
- 34:32Speaker 1: But that's just something I know. You know what I mean.
- 34:34Speaker 1: And that's why I think that they have.
- 34:35Speaker 6: Social media influencers and content creators and people that really
- 34:40Speaker 6: specialize in that.
- 34:42Speaker 5: So one of the most important things, especially in our community,
- 34:46Speaker 5: is trust. Yes, and nothing more important than black women.
- 34:49Speaker 5: Come on, it's putting a product in it. And so
- 34:52Speaker 5: I know one of the things you're keen on is
- 34:54Speaker 5: the amount of reviews. You have a things over sixty thousand.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Reviews now over sixty thousand and five star.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Five star as. You need to be very clear about this,
- 35:02Speaker 4: very clear about this.
- 35:03Speaker 1: So they're all real, by the way.
- 35:04Speaker 5: So in the beginning, I mean, how are you getting
- 35:07Speaker 5: this product in the people's hands first?
- 35:08Speaker 4: Is it like a trial question?
- 35:10Speaker 5: And you know, the initial thing is like we got
- 35:12Speaker 5: to put this thing to work, So like, let's see
- 35:14Speaker 5: what the feedback is.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Let's take us through that.
- 35:16Speaker 6: Okay, So basically I launched right after and I don't
- 35:20Speaker 6: even want to say my competitor, but I love you girl.
- 35:22Speaker 6: I launched right after Miracle Drops, right she launched maybe
- 35:26Speaker 6: a few years prior than me, and I, like I said,
- 35:29Speaker 6: I already had that idea in my head of what
- 35:32Speaker 6: I wanted to do with hyllewe herbar was sitting on
- 35:33Speaker 6: the idea for like five years. And so when I
- 35:35Speaker 6: saw her and I saw the success that she had,
- 35:37Speaker 6: it also gave me drive, like, oh my gosh, you
- 35:41Speaker 6: look at the success she had, I could do it.
- 35:43Speaker 6: If she could do it, I could do it too.
- 35:44Speaker 6: So it took me into that realm of like, Okay,
- 35:48Speaker 6: what should I do or how should I do this?
- 35:51Speaker 6: And I wanted to make sure to have a product
- 35:54Speaker 6: that was popping.
- 35:55Speaker 1: So at that time, hair Growth Serum was.
- 35:58Speaker 6: Popping because her product was a huge product that was popping.
- 36:03Speaker 6: So it's like going with the times, you know, like
- 36:05Speaker 6: with reality TV, you know what I mean, you have
- 36:06Speaker 6: to have a certain type of show. Now these shows
- 36:08Speaker 6: are popping. Now we turn in. Now we go into
- 36:11Speaker 6: this type of vibe. So it was the same type
- 36:12Speaker 6: of thing with women in our products as black women.
- 36:15Speaker 1: You know, we go through our phases.
- 36:16Speaker 6: We go through the lace front, then we go through
- 36:18Speaker 6: the wig, then we go through the weaves, then we
- 36:19Speaker 6: go through the braids. So it was a phase at
- 36:21Speaker 6: that time that was hair growth serums that are going
- 36:24Speaker 6: to grow your hair. So because I picked up on
- 36:27Speaker 6: it and I came at it with the right time,
- 36:29Speaker 6: I was able to get into the psyche.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Like I said, of the woman's head.
- 36:33Speaker 6: It was all about the videos of the black women
- 36:37Speaker 6: with long hair and getting into those groups that had
- 36:41Speaker 6: the pages that were filled with black consumers that liked
- 36:48Speaker 6: to buy off of Instagram pages. You know how back
- 36:51Speaker 6: in the day, we had those Instagram pages and they're like,
- 36:53Speaker 6: oh you could buy this or the y only pearls
- 36:55Speaker 6: or the you know those type.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Of pages that sell things. Those were those pages.
- 36:59Speaker 6: They had two thousand, four thousand, five hundred thousand followers
- 37:03Speaker 6: on those pages.
- 37:03Speaker 1: That all trusted the things that they would post.
- 37:07Speaker 6: So my like network that I was blessed enough, Thank
- 37:12Speaker 6: you April. That my girl April, she got me in
- 37:14Speaker 6: this groups. In these groups, she had a brand as well,
- 37:19Speaker 6: And basically I was blessed enough to be privet into
- 37:21Speaker 6: the groups and it was like I was privet into
- 37:25Speaker 6: my entire demographic of women that were already sitting on
- 37:28Speaker 6: these pages waiting to buy the next thing. So really,
- 37:32Speaker 6: everybody wants to buy something that they feel like is
- 37:35Speaker 6: different and it's not saturated as well in the market.
- 37:37Speaker 6: So because you know, another product was big, they're like, Okay,
- 37:41Speaker 6: let's try.
- 37:41Speaker 1: This one now.
- 37:42Speaker 6: So they really trusted me and tried it, and I
- 37:45Speaker 6: put this review tracker on my website. Luke's is the
- 37:49Speaker 6: company Loox and Lukes was a review tracker that basically
- 37:54Speaker 6: it would email them, you know, say do you want
- 37:56Speaker 6: to give a review? Then you would give the review,
- 37:58Speaker 6: but the review would pop up on the website site.
- 38:00Speaker 6: So I basically optimized my site, and I did the
- 38:02Speaker 6: whole thing in the beginning, you know, with the success
- 38:06Speaker 6: and everything. We didn't even change the website until like
- 38:08Speaker 6: maybe a year or two ago, but I basically optimized it.
- 38:11Speaker 6: So it was all about thinking about all of the
- 38:13Speaker 6: steps that a woman would go through on a website
- 38:16Speaker 6: to purchase something, making sure that she converted. Another thing
- 38:21Speaker 6: was like making sure that the website was geared. It's
- 38:24Speaker 6: like you want to babysit them to the sale. You know,
- 38:27Speaker 6: you don't want to have too many whistles and bils
- 38:29Speaker 6: a lot of times on your website, videos and a
- 38:31Speaker 6: lot of things, especially in the beginning, because it takes
- 38:34Speaker 6: them off of their.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Concept of just buying and going.
- 38:38Speaker 6: You want them to be in out a quick and
- 38:40Speaker 6: easy transaction, go on, look at your stuff and purchase.
- 38:43Speaker 1: So a lot of times when you put too much,
- 38:46Speaker 1: they get sidetracked. So the review tracker thing was the
- 38:49Speaker 1: perfect thing.
- 38:50Speaker 6: It was just that one thing that was there and
- 38:52Speaker 6: it would pop up on any product that they went
- 38:54Speaker 6: on and then they would click. And so the wonderful
- 38:57Speaker 6: thing about it is the product really worked. So the
- 38:59Speaker 6: reviews flooded.
- 39:01Speaker 1: In like I didn't have to do anything I've not.
- 39:04Speaker 6: You know a lot of people say, oh, those reviews,
- 39:06Speaker 6: that's fake or you can't even believe that.
- 39:08Speaker 1: It's so sad. They are all real.
- 39:10Speaker 6: It's just sad that people think that because they come
- 39:12Speaker 6: through you know, they all came through Lukes and Okindo
- 39:15Speaker 6: to review outlets that we have. And what's wonderful about
- 39:18Speaker 6: what I did with my website too, is I made
- 39:21Speaker 6: sure to have two review trackers. So one was the
- 39:24Speaker 6: Luke's review that would show like a woman, her picture,
- 39:26Speaker 6: her review, you know, at the bottom she would give
- 39:28Speaker 6: it a five star or whatever stars.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And then there was another one.
- 39:31Speaker 6: That I had that was like a survey and so
- 39:32Speaker 6: I have like over thirty thousand women that have just
- 39:35Speaker 6: like taken a survey of earners.
- 39:37Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 39:38Speaker 5: Listen, eylu is relaunching, revamping, retooling. That's why we're creating
- 39:42Speaker 5: a new educational experience that's more expensive.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Shoty telling what we got, Yes, twenty twenty three, We've
- 39:49Speaker 2: got a lot. It's still a lot playing for you guys.
- 39:51Speaker 2: So you know that eyou already includes monthly financial planning
- 39:55Speaker 2: calls with Me, book club calls with Troy, real estate
- 39:58Speaker 2: calls with MG the Mortgage Guy, access to the Home
- 40:01Speaker 2: Buying Blueprint Volume one and Volume two. Part of the
- 40:04Speaker 2: revamp will include twenty seven local chapters from across the
- 40:08Speaker 2: United States, live interactive teaching, hands on not just pre
- 40:12Speaker 2: recorded videos, plus fifteen brand new curriculums.
- 40:17Speaker 5: The biggest just got bigger head over the eyl university
- 40:22Speaker 5: dot com.
- 40:22Speaker 4: That's EYL. You n I V E R s I
- 40:27Speaker 4: T Y dot com.
- 40:30Speaker 6: See it there, Like how old they are, how how
- 40:33Speaker 6: fast it worked, you know, what do they feel about it?
- 40:35Speaker 6: And so those are things that work when you go
- 40:37Speaker 6: to like now the next level that I'm at big
- 40:39Speaker 6: box stores and you know, going into retail and that
- 40:42Speaker 6: type of thing. It's like really making a big difference
- 40:45Speaker 6: because no one comes with that. I sit in these meetings,
- 40:48Speaker 6: you know, Big Box and our distributors, and I'm doing
- 40:52Speaker 6: some really big things with all of all of.
- 40:54Speaker 1: The stores at this point, and they sit there in awe.
- 40:57Speaker 6: They're in shock. They can't even believe. They're like, how
- 41:00Speaker 6: did you like because at this point, we've our revenue
- 41:02Speaker 6: is about forty five million over the last let's say
- 41:06Speaker 6: three to four years. You know, like the first year
- 41:08Speaker 6: we did a million. I mean, thank you, thank you,
- 41:11Speaker 6: thank you. And so to be able to do something
- 41:13Speaker 6: like that with no bank loan, I did most of it.
- 41:16Speaker 6: Will not even move a credit card, you know, like
- 41:18Speaker 6: we got our AMEX, you know, thank you.
- 41:20Speaker 1: My express love you.
- 41:21Speaker 6: But that is not heard of as a black woman.
- 41:25Speaker 6: And everyone said like, why don't you take money?
- 41:27Speaker 1: Why didn't you? You know, you're supposed to use other
- 41:29Speaker 1: people's money to make money.
- 41:30Speaker 6: And I'm like, you know why, Because I wanted to
- 41:33Speaker 6: show the next little young black girl that she could
- 41:36Speaker 6: do it with nobody's money.
- 41:38Speaker 1: That's why, like.
- 41:39Speaker 6: I really wanted to have that story to where the
- 41:42Speaker 6: next young black entrepreneur girl, woman boy whatever could say, Wow,
- 41:49Speaker 6: she made forty five million dollars without taking a dime
- 41:51Speaker 6: from anybody else. I don't have to have perfect credit.
- 41:53Speaker 6: I don't have to go and beg somebody for help.
- 41:55Speaker 1: I don't.
- 41:56Speaker 6: I can just put Slaice my boot straps up and
- 41:59Speaker 6: I can go out there and I can go get
- 42:00Speaker 6: it too.
- 42:01Speaker 2: So let's go back to social media things. Yes, you
- 42:06Speaker 2: started selling at what point I started selling?
- 42:11Speaker 6: Actually, it's our almost our fifth year anniversary and I
- 42:13Speaker 6: am celebrating it with you guys. September sixteenth to eighteen
- 42:18Speaker 6: is when we started posting and started in the groups.
- 42:21Speaker 2: How many followers as you have?
- 42:23Speaker 1: I had about sixty thousand at that point.
- 42:25Speaker 2: And took how long until you get sixty thousand?
- 42:28Speaker 1: About a year?
- 42:29Speaker 2: So you did a year of because a lot of
- 42:32Speaker 2: times people try to sell too early. This is the
- 42:34Speaker 2: point that I'm trying to make. It's very important. And
- 42:37Speaker 2: like you just started Instagram page and you already doing
- 42:39Speaker 2: fifty percent off Black Friday sales or five hundred followers.
- 42:42Speaker 2: So you did a year with no even though you
- 42:45Speaker 2: already had the plan to sell. You set on you
- 42:48Speaker 2: set on the product for a year. Yes, and just
- 42:51Speaker 2: built organically, organically post every day and just viral stuff.
- 42:56Speaker 6: Viral you always the concept, in my opinion, into social
- 43:00Speaker 6: media is viral.
- 43:02Speaker 1: If it ain't viral, don't post.
- 43:03Speaker 2: So and just building that trust, building the community. And
- 43:06Speaker 2: then when it was tom a year, lady got six
- 43:09Speaker 2: thousand followers and you decided to drop the product. How
- 43:12Speaker 2: did you roll out the product? When you first rolled
- 43:14Speaker 2: it up?
- 43:14Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, so ghetto.
- 43:16Speaker 6: Oh my god, like not ghetto, but you know, you know,
- 43:18Speaker 6: we do what we gotta do.
- 43:19Speaker 1: I didn't even have labels on my bottles. I didn't
- 43:22Speaker 1: have labels. And you know what I told the women
- 43:24Speaker 1: when they were kind of like, there's no label on
- 43:25Speaker 1: the bottles. I have these beautiful, beautiful bottles. They were ombre.
- 43:28Speaker 1: They went from like a blue to a beautiful cranberry,
- 43:31Speaker 1: and it just blew up.
- 43:33Speaker 3: You know.
- 43:33Speaker 6: You just say, okay, I'm gonna start posting today. You
- 43:35Speaker 6: can buy it the websites here, and they started buying
- 43:37Speaker 6: it the first day.
- 43:38Speaker 2: But no person just the product like it wasn't like
- 43:41Speaker 2: a person behind it. No, just posted the product and this.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Yeah, this is what I did that specifically too.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Did they know that the page was it or what's
- 43:48Speaker 2: the page called Hollywood hair Bar. Yes, so it was branded.
- 43:51Speaker 2: It wasn't like you had a different page and white
- 43:54Speaker 2: new product.
- 43:55Speaker 6: So it wasn't on the Hollywood hair Bar page. But
- 43:57Speaker 6: the secret to the sauce was the network I was in.
- 44:01Speaker 6: So it wasn't just that I posted and said by this.
- 44:04Speaker 6: I posted with about thirty forty other people posting, and
- 44:08Speaker 6: so we did what's called like an organic share for
- 44:11Speaker 6: share you know, that's like something that they used to
- 44:14Speaker 6: do back Now I.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Remember that it works.
- 44:16Speaker 5: So their trust system, you'd like tied into it because
- 44:20Speaker 5: now you've posted in their community rate trust everything they do, you.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Part of the trust because they're posting all these different
- 44:25Speaker 1: brands and soon.
- 44:26Speaker 2: So I looked into this what your did? I never
- 44:28Speaker 2: did it, yeah, but I did look into it at
- 44:31Speaker 2: a certain point. What we did early was even before
- 44:35Speaker 2: this page, my own personal page used to be able
- 44:38Speaker 2: to like like a lot of pictures, yea. And if
- 44:40Speaker 2: you like pictures, then if you like a thousand pictures,
- 44:43Speaker 2: a hundred people might follow you like this person like them.
- 44:46Speaker 2: That was an old hat.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Instagram stopped.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think now it's like, do you get reported
- 44:51Speaker 2: as spams? Pictures all the time, but that was something.
- 44:54Speaker 2: But then those groups came along and it'd be like, yeah,
- 44:57Speaker 2: you have one hundred thousand follows, they a fifty thousand,
- 44:59Speaker 2: they have five hund thousand followers, and you'll all decide
- 45:01Speaker 2: on one day, we're all gonna post this one thing
- 45:03Speaker 2: today that you might get three million accounts. That's reached,
- 45:07Speaker 2: and then tomorrow you all post the next thing and
- 45:09Speaker 2: then it's like three million accounts. That's reach. They actually
- 45:12Speaker 2: even had. So before verification came, I don't know how
- 45:16Speaker 2: long you've been doing then Instagram thing. The beginning, there
- 45:18Speaker 2: were there were like pages like they had like the
- 45:21Speaker 2: Will Farrell page. He had like a lot of fake pages,
- 45:25Speaker 2: but the page, like one of the fake pages had
- 45:27Speaker 2: like seven hundred thousand followers, and they used to like
- 45:31Speaker 2: promote other people's products, like you paid them a thousand
- 45:34Speaker 2: dollars and they'll promote your product whatever, and then you
- 45:37Speaker 2: get like a thousand followers just like in an hour.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And then, like I said, that's before verification came, so
- 45:43Speaker 2: nobody really knew what page was, what page. It was
- 45:46Speaker 2: just kind of all over the place those days. So
- 45:48Speaker 2: the growth, it was definitely a lot a lot more
- 45:50Speaker 2: of room for growth. But then what you had mentioned
- 45:52Speaker 2: with the with the ads that really got popular during
- 45:55Speaker 2: the pandemic as well.
- 45:56Speaker 6: Yes, exactly, And a lot of people went out and
- 45:58Speaker 6: did ads, and a lot of marketing agencies have taken
- 46:02Speaker 6: black businesses and just pamp them, you know, because we
- 46:06Speaker 6: didn't know any better type thing. But basically, in a nutshell,
- 46:11Speaker 6: it's just it's a doggy dog world out there, in
- 46:13Speaker 6: that marketing world, that online marketing world is really it's
- 46:18Speaker 6: like the devil.
- 46:18Speaker 2: But by the way that that strategy can still work
- 46:20Speaker 2: to this day, like and yeah, yeah, if you had
- 46:23Speaker 2: if you are an entrepreneur influencer, and you communicate with
- 46:27Speaker 2: five other people, it's just strength in numbers, right, It's.
- 46:30Speaker 6: Like, all right, look, celebrities do it all the time, right,
- 46:32Speaker 6: but now it's like sometimes we don't believe the celebrity
- 46:35Speaker 6: anymore because we feel like, oh, they're getting paid or whatever.
- 46:38Speaker 2: It's oversaturated. You got to make it look organic.
- 46:41Speaker 6: Exactly exactly, And so with us, we would I would
- 46:44Speaker 6: post and I'm gonna tell you guys this, I did
- 46:46Speaker 6: all of that with one caption. I never changed my caption.
- 46:49Speaker 6: It was the same thing. Do you want to grow
- 46:51Speaker 6: you or your daughter's here like literally over and over
- 46:53Speaker 6: and over. And then we had a viral video, so
- 46:56Speaker 6: I grew up. We had a viral video that I
- 47:00Speaker 6: actually went viral. That was our ad Our first ad
- 47:03Speaker 6: Our first ad ended up at like forty million views
- 47:06Speaker 6: or something like that, and the women.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Went crazy over this ad.
- 47:10Speaker 6: We got to at this point, I would say, overall,
- 47:13Speaker 6: we've reached like over a billion, you know online with
- 47:17Speaker 6: our reach and our whatever, all those stats, and it's
- 47:20Speaker 6: been awesome to see how much we've grown. But when
- 47:24Speaker 6: you start that way, the way that I started, and
- 47:28Speaker 6: not just like like you said, imagine coming together and
- 47:30Speaker 6: doing that once a day, I imagine coming and doing
- 47:31Speaker 6: that twenty five times a day like a nut.
- 47:35Speaker 1: And that's what I was doing. And that's why the
- 47:38Speaker 1: success came Like that, you know.
- 47:42Speaker 5: No, right, because that's that's the thing, right, Like, you know,
- 47:44Speaker 5: the product is great, you got the trust system, but
- 47:47Speaker 5: these orders start coming in and you might not be
- 47:50Speaker 5: runing for that, you might not have the inventory.
- 47:52Speaker 4: Manufacturing didn't label.
- 47:53Speaker 6: Well, the great thing is yes, because I'd say my
- 47:55Speaker 6: label story, But the great thing is that I my
- 47:58Speaker 6: manufacturer was phenomenal we was able to work it out.
- 48:01Speaker 6: And I was prepared because I come from the music
- 48:04Speaker 6: and entertainment industry. So because the music entertainment industry is
- 48:08Speaker 6: like literally the best hard knock life you could ever
- 48:11Speaker 6: go through, especially being a celebrity fashion silas like I
- 48:13Speaker 6: wasn't a hair stylist or a makeup like. We had
- 48:15Speaker 6: to come with truckloads and clothes, and you know, I
- 48:17Speaker 6: had to drop on the dime.
- 48:18Speaker 1: I had to. I've created miracles. I mean, I have
- 48:20Speaker 1: done some things, so.
- 48:22Speaker 6: This was like kind of like a piece of cake
- 48:24Speaker 6: a little bit to a certain extent compared to the
- 48:26Speaker 6: things that I have pulled off, you know. But I
- 48:29Speaker 6: had a merchant on my processor. You know you have
- 48:32Speaker 6: your credit card processor, right. We were doing like I said,
- 48:35Speaker 6: like my biggest day was one hundred and sixty four
- 48:37Speaker 6: thousand dollars a day I made. But that day was
- 48:41Speaker 6: stimulus day. That was stimulus check day. But basically we
- 48:45Speaker 6: would do like eighty one hundred, you know, that was
- 48:47Speaker 6: my normal a day.
- 48:49Speaker 1: And I had a processor, my merchant process.
- 48:52Speaker 6: He called me, said, they called me on a Saturday,
- 48:55Speaker 6: him and another guy, and I knew my stomach drop
- 48:57Speaker 6: when he called me on myself on a Saturday.
- 48:58Speaker 1: I was like, oh God, what's going on?
- 49:00Speaker 6: And he's like, you know, I want to talk to
- 49:02Speaker 6: you about yourselves. We're thinking that we want to cap
- 49:06Speaker 6: your credit card transactions daily at thirty thousand because you're
- 49:11Speaker 6: not gonna be able to pull this off. And I'm like,
- 49:14Speaker 6: what I said, are you crazy? I said, I don't
- 49:16Speaker 6: think you've ever met me before.
- 49:17Speaker 1: I come from the.
- 49:18Speaker 6: Music entertainment industry that I know is not an answer,
- 49:21Speaker 6: that is not even an option.
- 49:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna get it done.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Watch.
- 49:24Speaker 6: He said, well, I've seen this all the time, you know,
- 49:25Speaker 6: I see people blow up all the time.
- 49:27Speaker 1: This is the problem with you know, brands like this.
- 49:30Speaker 1: You guys can't keep up. I said, oh, I'm gonna
- 49:32Speaker 1: keep up. Next thing.
- 49:33Speaker 6: You know, I made forty five million dollars without any problem.
- 49:37Speaker 6: And he looked at me and could not believe, because
- 49:39Speaker 6: he's still my merchant processes to this day, could.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Not believe that.
- 49:43Speaker 6: He didn't believe that I was going to pull it off.
- 49:45Speaker 6: And you know, I was something like, what they call
- 49:47Speaker 6: a unicorn is what I hear. That's what they've been
- 49:49Speaker 6: calling me a unicorn. And I've always kind of like
- 49:52Speaker 6: resonated with being with being a unicorn because I'm a Capricorn.
- 49:56Speaker 6: So you know, Capricorns are very ambitious and like we
- 49:59Speaker 6: have drive that's like no weather, a lot of Christmas Day.
- 50:03Speaker 6: So you know, a lot of celebrities are Capricorns.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Mary J.
- 50:05Speaker 6: Blige's capricorn, you know, yes, yeah, a lot of Mesa,
- 50:09Speaker 6: she's a Capricorn. But a lot of very you know,
- 50:12Speaker 6: influential people are Capricorns. We work very hard. So the
- 50:15Speaker 6: hard work was not hard for me. It was very stressful.
- 50:19Speaker 6: I did have a crook, you know, on my neck
- 50:21Speaker 6: for about a month because I was you know, up
- 50:23Speaker 6: to my roster and like just everything was in front
- 50:25Speaker 6: of me and like everything that I wanted and then
- 50:27Speaker 6: how am I going to pull it off? But we
- 50:29Speaker 6: pulled it off, and so I'm just thankful for the
- 50:30Speaker 6: team that I have I was able to build out.
- 50:33Speaker 1: I mean, I have.
- 50:34Speaker 6: Hundreds of people you know that work with me. But
- 50:37Speaker 6: it was just a great, great thing.
- 50:38Speaker 2: So, okay, viral, you said you had a viral.
- 50:43Speaker 1: I had a viral video. The video was a video
- 50:47Speaker 1: that basically.
- 50:48Speaker 6: Okay, so the concept of growing your hair is, you know,
- 50:50Speaker 6: you grow your hair so everyone that showed hair growth
- 50:54Speaker 6: videos just showed people with long hair. They never really
- 50:56Speaker 6: showed the process or that before and after. And so
- 50:59Speaker 6: we showed a video that was a before and quickly
- 51:02Speaker 6: into an after.
- 51:03Speaker 1: But it wasn't just a regular before and after. It
- 51:06Speaker 1: was braids.
- 51:07Speaker 6: So nine times out of ten, if you see hair growth,
- 51:09Speaker 6: you never see it on braids, you know. And so
- 51:11Speaker 6: we had an ad that showed a woman that growed
- 51:15Speaker 6: her daughter, grew her daughter's hair, growed that grew her
- 51:18Speaker 6: daughter's hair.
- 51:19Speaker 1: In two seconds you could see the results.
- 51:22Speaker 6: So that video was viral because it was like you
- 51:25Speaker 6: could see the before and the after within the first
- 51:27Speaker 6: three seconds of you scrolling. You have to be able
- 51:29Speaker 6: to stop that person and grab their attention so that
- 51:31Speaker 6: they can pay attention to what you want.
- 51:33Speaker 1: Them to see.
- 51:34Speaker 6: Because Facebook is basically like an impulse buy, you know,
- 51:36Speaker 6: it's not like Amazon. You know, Amazon is, and I'm
- 51:38Speaker 6: about to were about to burn Amazon.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I'm so excited.
- 51:41Speaker 6: We have a huge thing going on with Amazon right now.
- 51:44Speaker 6: We've been doing very well, but we have a huge
- 51:46Speaker 6: launch of our own shop right now that's happening like
- 51:48Speaker 6: next week. But Amazon is a different beast. You know
- 51:50Speaker 6: people are on there, they have intent, They're a higher
- 51:52Speaker 6: intent customer. They're there to shop Facebook, They're there to
- 51:56Speaker 6: hang out, they're there to talk to their friends. You
- 51:58Speaker 6: have to get their attention. So we had to come
- 52:01Speaker 6: with a viral in that video I made. And the
- 52:04Speaker 6: funny thing about it is, you know, the marketing agency
- 52:06Speaker 6: that I worked with, they took all of the crudos,
- 52:12Speaker 6: you know, from the success of Hollywood Hairbar, but the
- 52:17Speaker 6: success really was on Hollywood Hairbar, you know, it was
- 52:20Speaker 6: on everything that I did and everything that we built,
- 52:23Speaker 6: and also the product as well as the videos, the everything.
- 52:27Speaker 6: So I did all my own stuff, like I said,
- 52:29Speaker 6: my own ads, I did my own websites.
- 52:32Speaker 1: As soon as they saw that, yuess.
- 52:35Speaker 6: What they did, they tried to take it over. They
- 52:38Speaker 6: want to do the ads now, they want to do everything.
- 52:40Speaker 6: They want to talk to my customer, they want to
- 52:42Speaker 6: speak to her, they want to do the emails, they
- 52:44Speaker 6: want to do the SMS.
- 52:45Speaker 1: They want to and I'm like, hold up, polled up,
- 52:46Speaker 1: poll ups.
- 52:47Speaker 6: So for about a good year and a half, I
- 52:49Speaker 6: lost control of my whole business. I just got control
- 52:53Speaker 6: back because I got rid of everyone and now went
- 52:56Speaker 6: in house with every single thing, and so I can
- 53:00Speaker 6: control the voice of my brand and all of that.
- 53:03Speaker 1: But for a while it.
- 53:04Speaker 6: Was taken over by the marketing internet, marketing world, and
- 53:08Speaker 6: it really is a doggy dog world for us because
- 53:11Speaker 6: we have to understand that we hold the juice and
- 53:14Speaker 6: then we have to continue to push our brands forward
- 53:18Speaker 6: because there's a lot of us black women, black men
- 53:20Speaker 6: in this industry, in this in this space that have
- 53:23Speaker 6: become successful because we.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Got the swag, we got the juice. But we have to.
- 53:26Speaker 6: Understand that we're no different than the basketball players and
- 53:29Speaker 6: the actors.
- 53:30Speaker 1: They're right there trying.
- 53:31Speaker 6: To take you, you know what I'm saying, and take
- 53:34Speaker 6: it and turn it into something that they want to.
- 53:36Speaker 6: So the women are very excited and very happy that
- 53:38Speaker 6: I still own it one hundred percent, and I want
- 53:40Speaker 6: to keep it that way, you know, for as long
- 53:42Speaker 6: as I possible.
- 53:42Speaker 5: When you look you were at the agency, you started
- 53:44Speaker 5: out with one number of your opinion, right, you said
- 53:46Speaker 5: maybe two thousand.
- 53:47Speaker 6: I started out with like five thousand thousand, but I
- 53:49Speaker 6: ended up at two fifty.
- 53:52Speaker 5: A month a month, so two to fifty a month.
- 53:55Speaker 5: So you're actually paying and you're watching your brand being
- 53:57Speaker 5: taken away. So that's that like, that's like, that's a
- 54:01Speaker 5: delimina in itself, right, What was that process like of
- 54:03Speaker 5: getting it back?
- 54:04Speaker 1: Like?
- 54:04Speaker 5: Hell, we having this team meeting, like all right, look
- 54:07Speaker 5: at the expenditures. This is way too much. How do
- 54:10Speaker 5: we find the people? And who are the people? Are
- 54:12Speaker 5: you finding local town? Are you feeling like people that
- 54:15Speaker 5: come across throughout your.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Career able to hire?
- 54:18Speaker 6: Which is so amazing, you know with the Internet now,
- 54:20Speaker 6: we all, I guess a lot of brands were going
- 54:22Speaker 6: through this, you know, because they say when you scale
- 54:24Speaker 6: to a certain extent, which I have a lot of
- 54:25Speaker 6: guru friends that I'm friends with that all have you know,
- 54:28Speaker 6: multimillion dollar brands too, And they told me a while ago,
- 54:29Speaker 6: you know, you should have been went in house by now,
- 54:32Speaker 6: and I'm like, I know, like basically going in house
- 54:34Speaker 6: with all of your services, like your marketing, your you know,
- 54:38Speaker 6: your fulfillment all of these things. Because once you get
- 54:41Speaker 6: to a certain level and you're you know, at a
- 54:44Speaker 6: certain level of orders every month, and we were at
- 54:46Speaker 6: like sixty to one hundred thousand orders a month, the
- 54:49Speaker 6: tax on that each one is crazy.
- 54:52Speaker 1: You might as well just.
- 54:53Speaker 6: Go have your own whole you know what I mean,
- 54:56Speaker 6: facility with how much you're paying. I was paying two
- 54:58Speaker 6: hundred and fifty thousand dollars a month to a marketing agency.
- 55:01Speaker 1: For marketing fees.
- 55:03Speaker 6: What was I thinking, Like, I don't even know what
- 55:06Speaker 6: I was thinking. I could have had a whole God dang,
- 55:10Speaker 6: I could have had a Google office to myself with
- 55:13Speaker 6: a hundred people sitting there all day with me, you know,
- 55:17Speaker 6: in a boardroom, telling them exactly what I wanted. So
- 55:20Speaker 6: it got out of hand, and they knew it got
- 55:21Speaker 6: out of hand, but it got out of hand because
- 55:23Speaker 6: I felt like I was dependent on them. And so
- 55:26Speaker 6: what I did was I hired now because, like I said,
- 55:29Speaker 6: a lot of brands are going through this now when
- 55:30Speaker 6: they get to a certain level and then they realized,
- 55:32Speaker 6: oh I got to go in house, and not knowing
- 55:33Speaker 6: how to get in house, that's at the level that
- 55:37Speaker 6: can handle the type of business that you built.
- 55:39Speaker 1: I was able to hire, like I guess we'll call.
- 55:41Speaker 6: It a hedgehunt or whatever they have been specifically now
- 55:44Speaker 6: for marketing growth specialists and things of that sort. So
- 55:47Speaker 6: I interviewed, did the whole thing, looked at their backgrounds,
- 55:50Speaker 6: and then we went and went in house.
- 55:52Speaker 1: We went in house about three months ago.
- 55:54Speaker 6: This is all fresh and new, and we stopped all
- 55:58Speaker 6: of our ads, literally revamped every single thing, revamped myself,
- 56:03Speaker 6: all of it. And I am so excited and happy.
- 56:06Speaker 6: We are doing excellent. I had to revamp everything because
- 56:09Speaker 6: we're going in different ways. So right now I'm like
- 56:12Speaker 6: taking my distribution outlets into you know, going into more
- 56:16Speaker 6: distribution outlets. So I had to make sure that everything
- 56:19Speaker 6: made sense. Now it's not just online that's pushing Hollywood
- 56:23Speaker 6: hairbar now it's online. Now, it's beauty supplies across the country. Now,
- 56:26Speaker 6: it's you know, Walgreens. Now, it's Amazon. Now, it's all
- 56:29Speaker 6: to beauty.
- 56:30Speaker 1: You know.
- 56:30Speaker 6: Those are the things that we're working on right now.
- 56:32Speaker 6: So I wanted to make sure that my online marketing
- 56:35Speaker 6: was not taking over my whole goddang owned business, because really,
- 56:38Speaker 6: your business should not be driven just by online marketing.
- 56:44Speaker 6: And that's the reason why, like I got into a
- 56:46Speaker 6: situation just to be honest, like, you know, I have
- 56:49Speaker 6: my face on, like I'm the business woman of all
- 56:50Speaker 6: business women, and I am, but they tried to eat
- 56:54Speaker 6: me alive, you know. And because of the fact that
- 56:58Speaker 6: we made history together. I try trusted them, and I
- 57:01Speaker 6: learned my lesson. I'm not trusting anyone ever again but myself,
- 57:06Speaker 6: because they will get you.
- 57:07Speaker 2: You know what did they do that?
- 57:11Speaker 1: Oh, I'm so happy you asked me that.
- 57:14Speaker 4: Thanks Shevy, thank you, thank you.
- 57:16Speaker 1: So basically, you know, marketing change.
- 57:20Speaker 6: And so because marketing changed, Facebook changed all of that
- 57:22Speaker 6: after the pandemic, and you know, Facebook ads started to
- 57:24Speaker 6: go up, so your customer acquisition went up.
- 57:27Speaker 1: And basically customer acquisition means how much.
- 57:29Speaker 6: You pay for to acquire each customer, So how much
- 57:32Speaker 6: you pay for that customer to purchase your product.
- 57:35Speaker 2: And it became harder because the data you couldn't they lied, yes.
- 57:40Speaker 6: Exactly, So now it's more expensive. Now you're just like
- 57:43Speaker 6: going out there saying it's her that she wants my product?
- 57:45Speaker 1: Is it hurt? So it costs more.
- 57:46Speaker 6: So basically, they came up with a concept that was
- 57:49Speaker 6: really a scam. And the concept because they knew the
- 57:53Speaker 6: era of online marketing was getting a little you know,
- 57:55Speaker 6: so they created a whole concept of how I feel
- 57:58Speaker 6: that they were going to dip out of the whole
- 57:59Speaker 6: world you know of online marketing and get their money
- 58:02Speaker 6: out of it and all of that out of their business,
- 58:04Speaker 6: sell it, whatever the case is. So they came up
- 58:06Speaker 6: with a concept that was a like a TMZ type website,
- 58:10Speaker 6: like a blog site.
- 58:11Speaker 1: So this is something called advertorials. This is a new thing.
- 58:14Speaker 6: You know, it's not new, but it's kind of like
- 58:15Speaker 6: the next phase of where we're going with. You know,
- 58:17Speaker 6: you have ugc as, now it's advertorials. So advertorials like
- 58:22Speaker 6: basically like an article, you know, like a TMZ article
- 58:26Speaker 6: or something like. Let's say you're writing up about this
- 58:27Speaker 6: brand and this brand is amazing and this is what
- 58:29Speaker 6: this brand does, and so that was now being marketed
- 58:32Speaker 6: instead of my ads. So now we're hiding behind an
- 58:36Speaker 6: advertorial right secret to hair loss or.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Something like that. Let's say now you click that now
- 58:42Speaker 1: that first click.
- 58:43Speaker 6: Because I'm spending my money every click, I should be
- 58:46Speaker 6: able to retarget. So retargeting means I can go back
- 58:49Speaker 6: out in the internet world and I'm going to find
- 58:51Speaker 6: you wherever I can to put my ad right back
- 58:54Speaker 6: and back in front of you because I know that
- 58:56Speaker 6: you're interested, because you've already clicked, So you might not
- 58:58Speaker 6: want it to purchase now, but maybe you'll purchase in
- 59:00Speaker 6: a day.
- 59:00Speaker 4: Or two.
- 59:01Speaker 6: So that's the bread and butter of online marketing because
- 59:04Speaker 6: you spent a lot of money to get a little bit,
- 59:07Speaker 6: you know. So that's the other word you call your
- 59:10Speaker 6: fisher's net that you want to continue to catch yourselves.
- 59:12Speaker 1: So what they did was.
- 59:13Speaker 6: They created a way where that first click I was
- 59:16Speaker 6: not retargeting. They never told me that they were retargeting
- 59:19Speaker 6: it for their own brand that they came out with.
- 59:24Speaker 6: So in a nutshell, they were stealing my traffic. And
- 59:28Speaker 6: it happened for about a year.
- 59:29Speaker 4: And a half.
- 59:31Speaker 6: And I spent a lot of money on this tobacco
- 59:35Speaker 6: concept that they came out with, and once it all
- 59:39Speaker 6: hit the scene and hit the fan.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Oh, it hit the fan. You know, it hit the fan.
- 59:44Speaker 1: It definitely hit the fan.
- 59:45Speaker 6: Because I'm a nice girl, you know, but I'm at
- 59:48Speaker 6: the same time, I'm a girl from.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Los Angeles, California. Kill a CALLI. You know what I'm saying.
- 59:54Speaker 6: This is my livelihood, this is my daughter, this is
- 59:56Speaker 6: my future, this is my family, this is my life
- 59:59Speaker 6: here and it's not to be played with because you
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: guys are greedy, you know what I'm saying. Even though
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: you have all this money, you've done all these things.
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: They have brands over here, brands over here. I was
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: not the only brand that they I was the top brand.
- 1:00:09Speaker 6: They were the top agency online, and I was their
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: number one client. And I made them and they made me,
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: and they got everybody on the pretense of what they
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: did for me. I mean they made it on the
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: top one thousand listed. I mean I didn't make it
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: on the top one thousand. I mean I made it
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: on Forbes, which was amazing, that was phenomenal. But they
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: milked it and I was working, you know what I mean.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: And so in a nutshell, I was so disheartened by
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: the greed because you're always told this, you know, you
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: see what happens to the basketball players, you see what
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: happens to the stars, you see what happens, and.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: This is my world. So I'm like, dumb Dora, how
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: did you get played?
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: And you was spanning two fifty a month on top
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: of them stealing your traffic and making your brand to
- 1:00:56Speaker 6: where it was kind of hidden behind something.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: So in a nutshell, I was proud of myself. I
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: fired them.
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: That was the hardest thing I could have ever done
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: in my life, because they were my.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: You know, I resonated my success with them.
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: You know, we we created history together, and so that
- 1:01:14Speaker 6: was a really hard thing. It's been a hard twenty
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: three I'll say that. On top of all of the
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: distribution outlets and everything that I'm doing, and all the
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: stores and all the things that we're doing, it's all
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: these great, amazing things. But I had to get my
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: foundation reset, and so I went through a valley this year,
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: a really crazy valley. But I'm just super thankful of
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: the team that I have now. And yeah, we cooking,
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: were cooking.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: How much is the product?
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: Okay, so that's another thing. The product we start off
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: at twenty four ninety nine and then we go up
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: from there. Forty eight ninety nine is our next bottle size.
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: We have an extra strength that's forty eight ninety nine.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: And the wonderful thing is, you know, our women, honey,
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: we spend money on our hair.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: True, and you know, and.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: That's the thing, like we always say, like, oh, we
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: have to make it this price point for this demographic,
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: and then we get, you know, products that are crappy
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: products that are toxically hurting us. And I was able
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: to say, no, my black women, I know my women
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: because I was that girl going to school, you know,
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: in high school, I would save my lunch money to
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: go to the be supply or the nail shop, you.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Know what I mean. I would start.
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: I would save my little ten dollars every day in
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: high school to go do what I needed to do
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: for my little beauty thing if I didn't want to
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: ask my mom for you know, nail money or whatever.
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: So I knew that we're going to buy it, so
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: I wanted to make sure to price it in the
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: way that they understood and respected it. Knew that it
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: was going to work because the normal price point for
- 1:02:32Speaker 6: a hair growth serum that they're used to is six
- 1:02:34Speaker 6: p ninety nine, So twenty four ninety nine is a
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: jump and forty eight ninety nine that's like unheard of.
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: But we've sold so many bottles because the women know
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: that it's going to work, and even if they got
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: to come back every three weeks and buy that little
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: twenty four ninety nine bottle, they coming back and they're
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: buying it.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: You have high retenser rates, yes, oh.
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: We have over sixty percent return customer rate, which is
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: unheard of. The normal return customer rate is about twenty
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: percent triple. Yes, exactly triple.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: It's just one product we have.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: I have about I have a skew list of black
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: forty one.
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: So but yes, we have our top sellers, like we
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: have a top ten twelve that are hair care. But
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: then I went into skincare and I went into bath embody.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: The reason why I really really, you know.
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: The other thing that I want to definitely share is
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: that one of my passions is my women. And when
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: I found out what other races are doing to the
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: hair care products that are strategically marketed to us, made
- 1:03:33Speaker 6: me sick to my stomach. You know, like draino is
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: in perms. Draino, like that's in the perm that we
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: put on our hair as black women. You know, for
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: years and years we've watched our mothers and our grandmothers
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: perm their hair, and these things.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Were strategically created for us.
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: We are running around with fibroids, cancer, all kinds of
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: crazy things from hair care products, and so I really
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: wanted to come to the table with in green radients
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: that work that we're all natural, So that's what we're
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: all about, but still in a poppy fashion hot you
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: know way, because normally all natural products they're branded in
- 1:04:09Speaker 6: brown and gold, and they're boring and you know.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Nothing's popping, and it got no swag to it.
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: And so we were able to really bring something that
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: was different, and you know, the ability to bring something
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: to the table for women that love what they're doing,
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: I mean love the product and love the fact that
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: I'm behind it as a black woman is really something
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: that drives me every day.
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: So I got some of the products here. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: well I try them, but I listened to them. I
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: listened to them because I'm just I'm interested in it.
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: So you got the hair gummies ooh, and they're so yummy,
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: the hair growth oil, Yes, the hair growth bomb.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Hair growth Bomb just different and it's the bomb.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: The bomb is the bump. And then you got the shampoo.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: And so when you're going into the expansion of new products,
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: what are you looking Are you just looking at the
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: overall market and saying, this is something we can add.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: How do you go about that?
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: Yes, because I'm actually doing it right now, coming out
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: with another line. And so basically in N show, it's
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: all about the results. Most people that do brands, they
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: just want to do something that's cute, Like I said,
- 1:05:09Speaker 6: they go to the main factor and they say, just
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: give me some stuff, and they'll send you some stuff
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: and you pick what you like.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: They don't send you a list of the ingredients they
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: don't like unless you have probably have the ask.
- 1:05:18Speaker 6: Like that's kind of like backwards in my opinion, right,
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: I want to come with things.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: That really work.
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: So we go back to the roots, We go back
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: to Africa, we go back to India, like I really
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: have Indian Like I import something called a Chevy powder.
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: That's our next collection is called it's going to be
- 1:05:34Speaker 6: called the Chevy Gold. Basically, we have a mass now,
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: but we're going to extand the expand the collection.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: And basically Chevy is.
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: A ground grinded herb that comes from Sudan, Africa. The
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: women of Chad are this tribe that's been around course
- 1:05:49Speaker 6: for one hundreds of thousands of years, of course, and
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: they have hair down to their thighs. And these women
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: in Africa are running around with this hair this long.
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: Who would ever know it?
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: In America? Who we won't even know.
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: We don't even know our historical like traditions from Africa
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: that are beauty regimens, you know, that have been around
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: for so long, so it actually grows your hair, and
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: it fuses in your hair, and it works wonderfully with braids,
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: and it puts your hair like in an infused state.
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: So moisturize and they have hair that they have on
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: the tips of their hair that's from a little girl
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: because it doesn't break. So I'm going into like the
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: length retention. So now I taught you how to grow
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: your hair right, and now I'm going to teach you
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: how to retain the length and make sure that you
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: can retain the length of the hair that you grow.
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: Like an edge control that we have that's our next
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: best seller. It basically is a growth edge control. You know,
- 1:06:36Speaker 6: women where you know, we love our baby hair. We
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: love to make sure that our style, you know, we're
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: tamed and our edges are tamed and all of that.
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: But to basically have a edge control that grows your
- 1:06:45Speaker 6: hair and doesn't turn white and doesn't get you know, flaky.
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: I think that the women love the products because they
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: know that they're well thought out, and most products are
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: just put.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: On the market. To be honest, they're not thought out.
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: And even the ones that are there with the you know, manufacturer,
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: that's just throwing any and everything in the product, so
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: basically a nutshell.
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: You've said women a lot, Yes, I love my women.
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: Can we talk about the Tiffany Rose collection?
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: Yes, because you know there are some guys who have
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: lost their hair over time.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: Yes, yes, yes, Okay, So we have so many men
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: that purchase, so they're already purchasing, which is great, and
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: they're running around with our pink labels and everything, and.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: I feel so bad. But I am coming with the
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: men's line and men.
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: Honestly, I think that's going to blow even more than
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: the women because there's more men with loss of hair
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: than there are women. Of course, you know, so the
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: men with the beards and look at you with your
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: amazing beard.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I mean your beard is so thick and goody. Now
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: both of you appreciate here what the beard got and
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: the beard's too. You know, there's a lot of men
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: that you know.
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: They get the beard and they change, they turn into
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: like ooh, so you know a lot of men want
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: to grow their beards and their hair.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: So that is definitely coming as well. That's coming next to.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: So you said that you have no plans on selling.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: I have no plans on selling.
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: I really am here for my women because I know
- 1:08:09Speaker 6: as soon as I do, it's going to change.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Aproached.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Oh yes, I've.
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: Been approached from the second year into the business, they've
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: been you know, yeah, yes, And you know, for me,
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: this is about legacy. You know, my mother she worked
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: and my father worked so hard on the brand that
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: they built and really instilling something in me. And I
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: really want to give this to my daughter. My daughter,
- 1:08:36Speaker 6: her name is Milan. She's just amazing. She's fifteen, entrepreneurial.
- 1:08:40Speaker 6: You know, she's watched me go from a two bedroom
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: apartment and was Hollywood to a mansion, you know, like
- 1:08:45Speaker 6: with her own eyes. She helped me bottle the first bottles.
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: You know, she knows that she's behind the concept, and
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: so I want to have this to be something that
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: she can continue for her legacy as well.
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: You spoke about thing yes and mentioned him as a mentor.
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: It's when I was reading a story, I'm like, we
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: have a pretty good relationship with him as well, and
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: he's given us a lot of advice, especially when it
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: comes to this space and media. At this point, at
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: this level of your life, are you now that person
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: for somebody else?
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: My goodness. Yes, yes I am, and I want to
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: give back even more.
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: But I do have a few brands that like come
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: to me, you know, young girls that are in this space,
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: and I love to give advice.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I love it and.
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: I'd love to give advice, especially about what I've went through,
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: because you know, I was on a high for a
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: very long time. I'm still on a high. But there
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: was nothing that went wrong, you know what I mean.
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: I was just and I wasn't even dodging nothing. I
- 1:09:41Speaker 6: was just on a like up on up and up.
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: And to have what happened to me recently over the
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: last year and really find out, you know, what they
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: were doing and everything really took me to a place
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: that I was like, oh no, no, no, I don't
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: want this to happen to the next because it reminds
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: me it's like we are the new celebrity. I guess,
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: like in a form of money that can come from
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: a person.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: So you have a singer, Okay, that's an industry. They
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: go after the singers, you know. Then they go after
- 1:10:09Speaker 6: the ball players and they go and so I'm like, wow,
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: they really are going after black brands that are popping
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: to take advantage of them in a negative way with
- 1:10:22Speaker 6: the online world of marketing.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: So that's something that I really want to share about.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: So the next girl that's on her rise can know
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the things to look out for and the things to
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: you know, make sure that she stays a breast on
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: because I spoke and I continue to voice. I have
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: a voice, but they continued to just do this.
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: And I'm a woman, a black woman with all these men,
- 1:10:46Speaker 6: you know, my whole team was men, and so it
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: was like to a certain extent where they doesn't even
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: listen to me anymore, Like, what is going on with
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: my business?
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: My brand? Why can't I say something and.
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: You guys do exactly what I want? Why are you
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: doing everything that you want? So it was a point,
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: like I said, where I lost it and I want
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: to help the next young girls because this is just
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: the beginning of online success, especially with us, it's just
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: the beginning. So yes, that's definitely a passion of mine.
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: It's a competitive space and you said that, and you
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: said it's a doggy dog type world.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: I wanted in this space, especially as as a black woman.
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: When you see other brands, how supportive are you each
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: brands of each other as a business and on a personal.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Level, that's what you say. Okay, so I answer this question.
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: So he has, so I'm going to answer me. I
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: was in supportive of everyone because that's just who I am.
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: I'm a loving person. I don't got no prime to
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: be worried about what you're doing, because I'm too busy
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: worried about what I'm doing because I'm a creator and
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: an innovator and like a for real, really you know
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: person that comes from the industry I come from.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: I'm not really looking at anybody else, you know.
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: A lot of these other women that have come into
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: the space that I'm in really were hairstylists, you know,
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: or people that were in the real world of just
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: like you know, the real daily grind of running their things.
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: So I feel like the competitiveness comes from a different place,
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: in a different space than what I come from, because
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: I know, like, I feel like I have no competition,
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: and that's just what God told me, you know, And
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: that's just how that's how I feel, And that's not
- 1:12:23Speaker 6: hating on no one else.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I know that my product is amazing, my branding is phenomenal.
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: I have no competition, and that's where where I live
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: and the other girls when I came.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: In the game, It's like, what the hell is that?
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: So it was just automatic, like hate, you know. And
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: so I even work with you know, it's a small industry,
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: so everybody talks, you know, I've reached out. I've reached
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: out to another really big one. And it was so interesting.
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: She had just sold her business as well, and she
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: had a huge, I mean a huge, huge brand and
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: no it's not me Elle, I love her. But basically
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: I reached out and we were communing, you know, on
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: the DM, and I was like, you know, I really
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: want you to be my mentor because I want to
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: go into the same you know steps.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: And this was before I started selling. I was like,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I just got with this big distributor you were with them,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: and I want some you know, some tips. She said, yeah,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: of course. As soon as I told her how much
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: we had made, she stopped replying to me, and I
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: was like, oh my god. Why.
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: So when I started asking around, they said because she
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: hadn't made that much. And I was like, oh my god,
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: that's crazy, you know. So it was like I'm asking
- 1:13:26Speaker 6: for advice, even though we thought maybe she had you know,
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: I'm asking for advice for people that have not even
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: stepped into what I had stepped into yet the way
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: I stepped in because everyone else has made it through
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: different machines, which are distribution companies, big box stores and
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: all of that. No one has made it just through
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: like direct to consumer like what I did. Like I
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: did all of this from my warehouse to that consumer's doorstep,
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: and that was like unheard of. And that's why when
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: we sit down in these meetings with you know, the
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: distributors and the stores, and they're just like baffled, like
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: how did you do this? I'm like, my women, they
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: carried me through you know, difference. So I'm not competitive
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: with anyone. But there are so many people that hate
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: on Hollywood hairbar. I mean, it got so bad to
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: wear oh my god on YouTube, Like there's even YouTube
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: videos right now to this day.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: I mean contact YouTube. I'm like, how could I kind
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: of assume them? I've had lawyers, I mean just the
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: whole nine yards. They refuse. But she was desperate.
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: She went into desperate measures because I came a little
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: bit right behind her, but she was hiring her influencers,
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: her ambassadors to do bash videos on my product, but
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: being stupid enough to like put in the bottom.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: But I work for so and so so.
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: You know, if you purchase products on her website, she'll
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: give you me a commission, you know.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: So it was a lot.
- 1:14:36Speaker 6: It was even just like outside competitors from China that
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: were sending bots and trolls and oh my gosh, because
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: you know, they run this industry.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: This is their industry. It's not ours.
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: And over the last ten years, we have worked to
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: make it ours and because of social media, us women can.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Suf for each other with our products. And they do
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: not want the black woman.
- 1:15:05Speaker 6: To succeed in the world of the beauty industry because
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: they feel like they own it. That China owns it,
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: Korea owns it, they own all the beauty supplies, they
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: own you know that they are a lot of them
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: are behind the manufacturing of these product lines. Most of
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: these products that come directly from China. That's why they're
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: filled with types of chemicals. They have no rules. A
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: lot of these products don't even have the ingredient that
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: they put in it, you know. So it's all like
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: a trick. It's a ploy.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: Even product brands that are named after Africa are coming
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: from China that have nothing to do with anyone, you know.
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: So a lot of trickery has gone on in our
- 1:15:37Speaker 6: world because we're the biggest. We purchased beauty products seven
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: times more than any other race. So our beauty world
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: is trillions of dollars, and so they have a piece
- 1:15:50Speaker 6: of that. And so, in a nutshell, I was getting
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: it from all ends. But I was really able to
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: buckle down. You know, I'm a child of the most
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: high Gods. So I was able to buckle down and
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: just look forward and know God had me, and like, basically,
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: God's my business partner. He tells me what I need
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: to do. I'm very spiritual, and so I really just
- 1:16:07Speaker 6: had to have tunnel vision. I couldn't look at anyone
- 1:16:09Speaker 6: else because it was a lot going on that would
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: have took me out for sure. I couldn't even watch YouTube.
- 1:16:13Speaker 6: I got to the point where I was like, I
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: don't want to watch anybody's YouTube review. I don't want to
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: watch anybody's review. I just want to keep going forward.
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: And then I look up and I'm like, oh my god,
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: I have all these reviews and they love it, and
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: they you know, So I had to like turn off.
- 1:16:24Speaker 6: And I learned that from you know, being around celebrities
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: and stars, and that's what they have to do. They
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: have to turn off and just do their craft. And
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: like Jill Scott, would you know, Jill Scott was one
- 1:16:32Speaker 6: of my mom's clients as well, and she told my
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: mom at the beginning, you know, I just put.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: The music in their hand.
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: I just put the music in the people's hand and
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: I let the people, you know, And that's what was
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: my concept. That's all I have to do. Can't sit
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: up on the naysayers. But yeah, it's been hell for
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: sure with the competitiveness. But I love all. I'm a
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: loving girl.
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: It's enough women out all.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: That's a fact. We thank you for coming, thank you
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: for having me.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: This has been amazing.
