- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Good morning and welcome to Ag Squawk AM.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Jed Sidwell here, live from Gill, Colorado, this morning.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I'm back home for just a little bit.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Today we are going to be talking about my thoughts on corn, retail, beef, and there's some news from Warren Buffett this morning.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: We'll get to all of that and more here in a bit.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It was a big down day in cattle and feeder cattle yesterday.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Live cattle closed down$2.80 at$2.15.65.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: They were down just a bit more in the back months.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Feeder cattle closed at$3.24.38, down five and about a quarter.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Lean hogs were up in the front months, down in some of the back.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: They were up about a quarter at$78.90.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: As I quote the grain market here live, like to shout out our sponsor, plus$500.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: We use plus$500 T4 trading softwares to quote and trade the market every single day.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And as I look here live at my quotes right now, December corn is coming back down just a little bit this morning at 529 even.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Chicago Beans took it hard overnight, but they're on a little bit of a rally at 1308 and a half.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And Chicago, December wheat is at 722 even.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: On to the weather discussion for today.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Similar things.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: There's still that big red spot over most of the corn belt, but there is a major operational shift that arrives September 22nd to the 26th, as an exceptionally dry window opens across the central and southern corn belts, kicking off the first big push for fall harvest.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That'll be great to see.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And we'll talk about that a little bit more in a bit.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Extreme heat continues.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: It's going to be 10 to 15 degrees above normal, setting record highs through Monday in the mid-south southern corn belt, and as well as areas of the southern plains, accelerating dry down, but offering no relief for low river levels.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I have seen that in my travels throughout the country this summer.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: A lot of dry rivers in areas.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Here's my thoughts on the corn market for today.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I was struggling to come up with just the perfect slide that maybe encapsulated what I was thinking.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing that drying window, the 22nd through the 26th, when we finally get into true large amounts of combines into the field to learn how things are doing, that'll be a great indicator for what this market is going to do.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Right now we have early markets of some people getting into the into the fields a little bit earlier than the rest.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Silage reports have kind of been scattered throughout the country, what that looks like.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And because of that, I think it'll be a little bit scattered from what we'll get on harvest reports.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: You know, these storms were localized this summer.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: The tornadoes, all of those things, they were highly, highly localized.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Well, that means that some areas will be good and some will be bad, and that's why I think the USDA is struggling to put a good grasp on this number compared to other things like Stonex and independent reporting, the crop tour, and things like that.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: It's just a little bit of an odd year.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: On the retail beef side, I figured I'd pop on this chart from Mr.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Mike Sands.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: We've seen a lot of discussion in 2026 about the price of retail beef.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: The thing is, we've kind of kept up there at a plateau, and even recently we've come back down.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: We're at 964 a pound for just average retail beef price.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And the interesting thing is that it's undeniable that in just the general economy we have seen a level of inflation like no other here recently, just in domestic household goods.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: And so if something can c hold as consistent as ground beef has been holding in 2026, of course, 2025 it saw a big increase.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I think if it's holding, that's rather good.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And still consumer sentiment seems rather positive on the beef side.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: This headline caught my eye this morning because I'm a fan of his.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Warren Buffett stepping down as the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: The father time always wins, is what he was quoted saying.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Warren Buffett is stepping down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway effective immediately, said the company Friday.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: That'll be this morning, I guess, Friday.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: His son Howard Buffett will replace him as the chairman.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: The legendary investor has led Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway since 1965.7% compounded annual return.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: That's nearly double of the SP.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And if you know anything about Warren Buffett at all, he's a guy that still lives by modest means, even though being one of the richest men in America for a long time, he still lives in his starter home that he bought way back in the day.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And he starts his day every single day with a trip to McDonald's.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: And what he orders is depending on what the market is doing.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So as a trader, as someone that follows the markets every day, it's really impressive just to follow someone as successful as that's mindset when it comes to just attacking life.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: On the economic calendar for today, the Cattle on Feed Report comes out today at 2 p.m.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: after the close.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: There'll be some interesting things to see if we hold on to this front-end cattle supply.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Mike Sands and I will be talking about that later on the Fat Tuesday show next week.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I'm highly excited to get to talk to him about this.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: It's always really good, the one right after the Catalon Feed Report.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: That's all I have for you today.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Thank you for watching and thank you for listening.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: We've been posting a lot out on our social medias, so I encourage you to go catch those.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Not to mention, watch Ag Squawk wherever it's convenient for you.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: This afternoon we have a special treat for you.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Davis is going to have Mr.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Jim Wiesmeyer on his show, which we all can't get enough Weesmeyer.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: The guy is an absolute pro.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you for listening today.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: I always enjoy talking to every single one of you in the morning.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: It's the refreshing start to my day.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I'll talk to you guys on Monday.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Have a great weekend.
