- 0:08Hey, welcome to another exciting episode of Two Shot Tuesday.
- 0:10We say it every week. I am 1/2 of the most dynamic
- 0:14podcast team on the planet as I believe we stand today here in
- 0:182026. My name is Jason Riley with me
- 0:21as always my copilot, Barry T Nixon.
- 0:24Barry, how are you? I'm doing great, Jay, and I do
- 0:26appreciate every time you really take time to pronounce the T.
- 0:30Yeah. And you doing that, you've done
- 0:33that since we were together at Second City Improv class.
- 0:36You just loved saying Barry T Nixon.
- 0:38And I appreciate you're the only one who does that.
- 0:40The only one. You insisted on the T at one
- 0:43time in your life. Well, that, yeah, I did.
- 0:45And when I was 20, I I insisted on it.
- 0:47You did and I want to keep that up like even though we lost
- 0:50touch. So for me, you know, we've known
- 0:52each other a while, but we lost touch in there.
- 0:53So for me, you're still well in the tea years.
- 0:56And so I'll let you know when I drop it, but it's it's not going
- 0:59to be for a long time, if at all in this lifetime.
- 1:02OK, good. You heard it here, listeners.
- 1:04That's a promise made by by Jason that it will extend into
- 1:07the afterlife. For sure, we're hanging out in
- 1:10the afterlife. For sure, whatever the afterlife
- 1:12brings, we're going to be there. You're going to be one of the
- 1:15first people I look for in the afterlife to see.
- 1:17And if I beat you there, you know, I'm going to lay things
- 1:20out nicely. I'm going to head down to the
- 1:22local. I'm going to make sure we have
- 1:23some of our favorite Jameson black barrel with us.
- 1:26Yeah, and we'll raise a glass to, you know, whatever comes
- 1:30next. But plenty of time for that.
- 1:32We've got what's here and what's here.
- 1:34I believe next to you should be also next to me are two shots of
- 1:38something or other. What have you got?
- 1:40Jay, sadly this is coming to the end of the Black Barrel and I
- 1:43went by my local today and there is not a bottle to be found.
- 1:47Picked clean my friend on the eve at the time of this
- 1:50recording of Victoria Day long weekend.
- 1:53So are the two things related? I don't know.
- 1:56I will get back to you on that, but in the meanwhile, it's Black
- 1:59Barrel. What?
- 1:59Have you got probably because you mentioned it, there was
- 2:01probably a run on that LCBO because it's so popular as sure
- 2:04you are an influencer. Thank you.
- 2:06I'm coming to the end of a bottle also now I replenished
- 2:10with black barrel, but this happens to be the end of the
- 2:13last two shots in my bottle of black Bush.
- 2:17Bushmills. Black Bush.
- 2:19I love that. Here's to you, Jay.
- 2:23Smokey. That's nice.
- 2:27So it'll get you. Up in the morning by right?
- 2:30Yeah. It's that the a lot of caramel
- 2:32comes from the exhale after a shot like that.
- 2:35What about what do you find with the Bushmills?
- 2:38The black Bush. Fire but a controlled burn.
- 2:41So it's a nice good taste. I can feel it going down and I
- 2:44also feel it coming back kind of through the edges of my tongue.
- 2:48So it's more of a feel than a taste like you got the.
- 2:51Yeah, I love the expression that controlled burn.
- 2:54I like that. That's good.
- 2:55I'm going to use that. Good.
- 2:57Hope you don't mind, Jay. We have a lot to get to.
- 2:59Yeah, some topic that dropped in our laps for me unexpectedly
- 3:03today when you announced it. Why don't you let our listeners
- 3:06and viewers know what we're going to talk about today, Yeah?
- 3:08Out of the blue, totally out of the blue.
- 3:09And if any of you out there are users of Spotify, which I
- 3:13imagine millions of you are, you probably found when you open the
- 3:16app today that there was a new, not a wrapped list, but another
- 3:19list of your all time listening habits since inception, since
- 3:25your first day on the platform. Jay, I was shocked to find out
- 3:28that I was. I've been on the platform now
- 3:30since August of 2014. And you know, I love this
- 3:33expression gunned to my head. I wouldn't have been able to
- 3:36tell you it was 2014 that we started and it wasn't even me.
- 3:40Linda, of course, executive producer Linda Lebrun.
- 3:42Every good thing that happens in our house is usually at the
- 3:45behest of her or because of some action she's taken.
- 3:48She signed us up and we've never looked back.
- 3:50I absolutely love Spotify. I do too and in our household I
- 3:54was the one that signed us up. You're on the like the family
- 3:56plan I'm assuming? Well, we were in the beginning.
- 3:59She's now got her own. She's branched off.
- 4:01Moved off, OK. She just got off on her own.
- 4:04Yeah. What's the benefit, I wonder?
- 4:06You just can't track this like you can't do merge playlist.
- 4:09We don't do merge playlist but. We don't either.
- 4:11The benefit is that she can listen during the daytime and
- 4:14not kick me off. That's the thing.
- 4:15You can't have two parties listening at the exact same
- 4:18moment. On our plan, you can so we have
- 4:20a different time. Well, it's worth maybe exploring
- 4:22the options. Maybe.
- 4:23She's already jumped ship, Jay. She's got her own thing and
- 4:26she's going to have her own wrap list, which is good.
- 4:28We do too, but it's together. We pay 1 price.
- 4:31Maybe you're on it, maybe that's it.
- 4:32It's a separate thing, but it's a it's a plan.
- 4:34Who knows? Yeah, we still have.
- 4:35One price, but she just has a separate yeah.
- 4:37OK, then we have the same thing. I think we're.
- 4:40We're we agree to disagree to agree?
- 4:43I will also say August of 2014, I joined, I guess I had the free
- 4:48plan for a while. I definitely had the free plan
- 4:50for a while. And then it doesn't take long
- 4:52before you get sick and tired of listening to those commercials
- 4:55and get you're limited to how much you can listen that you go
- 4:58to the paid plan. But the interesting thing was it
- 5:01says my first because it says what your first song was that
- 5:04you streamed. And my first streamed song was
- 5:08not until like a year later. So I found that odd.
- 5:11So I'm not sure exactly what that's all about, but that's how
- 5:14it was. You should check go back and
- 5:16check your first stream and see if it was on that day, which I
- 5:18would have assumed it was or in my case was like October of the
- 5:22next year or the next or at least the next October.
- 5:25Like it was 8 months to a year away.
- 5:27So it's worth you might want to check that.
- 5:29That's interesting. I got to be honest with you.
- 5:30I blew right past that a piece of information when I got the,
- 5:34you know how it sends you like a video and it tells you how many
- 5:37songs you've listened to or how many artists for their blue
- 5:40past? A lot of that stuff.
- 5:41So I all I caught was the date, the inception day, which was
- 5:44August 10th of 14. And I was just like, holy shit.
- 5:48I can't believe we've been on it for over 10 years.
- 5:49Yeah, I'm super. That's a gutsy move for a
- 5:52software program to do that and tell you, cuz at some point you
- 5:55start calculating and go how long has it been?
- 5:57How many dollars a month? Is it really worth it?
- 5:59So Spotify is in both our cases. I told them it is risky.
- 6:03You're right. You know, that's a platform that
- 6:05people are confident people are going to like if they're going
- 6:07to tell you that, how much you've been, you know, basically
- 6:09paying for the last decade and they're celebrating 20 years,
- 6:13which shocked me. That's why they did it.
- 6:16It celebrates their 20. Years.
- 6:18So 2006 it's starting so. When you really look at the
- 6:21monthly cost to have access, basically you have the keys to a
- 6:25record store with unlimited amount of music.
- 6:28I mean it really is worth. If anything you're probably
- 6:30being undercharged. It's like 14 bucks a month now
- 6:33for the premium with no commercials to have unlimited.
- 6:36I mean, I certainly get used to it because I listen to it every
- 6:38single. Day and you're more of a variety
- 6:40man than I am. I will tend to listen to albums
- 6:43all the way through. So for me, I had bought a bunch
- 6:46like I bought CDs and then I rebought on Apple Music and now
- 6:50I'm subscribing on Spotify. But now I listen.
- 6:54So the DJ, the AIDJ has been very helpful, helpful to get me
- 6:58to listen to other types of music that I wouldn't normally
- 7:01have bought because otherwise it may have made sense for me to
- 7:03buy the albums on like Apple Music and just listen.
- 7:05Yeah, I didn't. So the DJ really helped to
- 7:08expand my horizons and keeps me kind of coming back for variety,
- 7:12even though I'm I, it's, I'm a toe in the water variety guy.
- 7:15I like to retreat back to the familiar.
- 7:17Yeah. I'm not even sure it's the full
- 7:19toe. Well, if it's any toe, it's the
- 7:21little toe. It's the baby toe.
- 7:23It's it ain't the big toe. We know that.
- 7:25That's too. That's too much.
- 7:26But one thing about the AIDJI don't know whether you've
- 7:29encountered this maybe because I don't know whether you have or
- 7:31not. I find that I'm getting the same
- 7:34handful of artists again and again.
- 7:36I wish that they would. Enough Spotify executives are
- 7:39listening. A little tweak to the AIDJ would
- 7:42be pretty cool because I find that I'm getting a lot of the a
- 7:45lot of repeats. And it'll often start with, hey,
- 7:48Barry, here's something that's been on your radar.
- 7:50And then it'll play something that had played the last time it
- 7:52told me that. So I was like, I wish that there
- 7:54was a little. I know it's coming.
- 7:57I don't mind it, but that's that's me because I when it's on
- 8:00my radar, I like to stick with things that I like.
- 8:02But when I get sick of it, if you hit skip enough, you can,
- 8:06you know, that's true. It picks up the point that
- 8:08you're not so interested and then it reminds you sometimes
- 8:11you can do, oh, don't forget to hold the button and tell me what
- 8:13you want. I'm not going to do that.
- 8:14I'm walking. I'm not interested in chit
- 8:16chatting with you and I don't know exactly what I want.
- 8:18I just know I don't want that. So give me something other than
- 8:21that. Jay, once again, you and I are
- 8:23perfectly aligned on this issue. Yes, I agree.
- 8:26Before we leave it, I want to know and maybe you blew past it.
- 8:29It's not going to be a surprise who my number one artist was
- 8:31Johnny Lang in 1000 hours or something.
- 8:34I think I've listened to Johnny Lang.
- 8:35Maybe that 100. And one album.
- 8:39He doesn't have a lot, he hasn't put one out since like 2016, but
- 8:42I've I've looked like my top song is by him and I've listened
- 8:45to it like 235 times because it also has on the playlist.
- 8:48It makes for you. It tells you how many listens of
- 8:50each song. That's true.
- 8:52That's helpful. You're number one artist, do you
- 8:53know? It's The strokes #1 all the
- 8:56time. Yeah, great.
- 8:58And unlike Mr. Lang, they have put a fairly robust back
- 9:02catalog. Like there's a lot of stuff
- 9:04going on, and there's a new record coming out at the time of
- 9:06this recording. We're doing this in May.
- 9:08Next month, there's a new album for The Strokes.
- 9:11OK, well, Johnny Lang, just to give him his due, goes back to
- 9:14the 90s as well. So he was like a breakout
- 9:16phenom, young star that. So even though he's quite young
- 9:20or not. Taking anything away from Mr.
- 9:21Lang. He has a back catalog is all I'm
- 9:23saying. OK, that's great.
- 9:25Would you want to do shot #2? And then, yeah.
- 9:28Dive into I think you've got a 4K corner you're interested in
- 9:31telling our fans about. Yeah, and I'm interested in
- 9:34loaning to you, Jay, because I'm just about ready to wrap it up.
- 9:37Can't wait. OK, what have you got for shot
- 9:39#2? Again, this is getting down to
- 9:41it. This is becoming a very precious
- 9:42item, Jay, and I'm hesitant to take a shot, but I'm going to
- 9:46anyway because that's what we do here.
- 9:48It's Jameson Black Barrel, hopefully not for the last time.
- 9:51What about you? And I have got for the last
- 9:53time, for now, the final shot that is sitting in the Bushmills
- 9:57black Bush. Here's to you and to our
- 9:59audience. Cheers.
- 10:03I want I got the shaver on the second shot.
- 10:05Very inconsistent. I know.
- 10:07You think my body as a seasoned drinker, you think my body would
- 10:10be used to these sensations by now.
- 10:12But no, it's not. Can surprise you once in a
- 10:14while, I guess, you know, and I had nice, I would say it's
- 10:17enveloped my tongue on that one. Like I can still feel that nice
- 10:20warm hug on the way down and that's nice.
- 10:22I like that from Bushmills. It'll give you a little thanks
- 10:25for enjoying in the bottle. That was the last shot.
- 10:28We'll see you next. Time.
- 10:29I like that I didn't leap over the tongue as some shots.
- 10:32No, this one rolled right through it.
- 10:34It was full contact sport. I love it.
- 10:38Let's talk about 4K Corner. What exciting impulse buy did
- 10:42you add to the family that you want to talk about today?
- 10:45Well. Thanks for that setup.
- 10:46And you're absolutely right. It was 100% impulse.
- 10:49I actually, I remember seeing ads for this series and then
- 10:52when I realized it was on HBO and I don't have that HBO, I was
- 10:55like, ah, whatever. And then it popped up.
- 10:58Of course, as these things do on your when you're scrolling
- 11:01around on Amazon, welcome to Dairy, which is the hit prequel
- 11:06series based on the novel. It's sort of a, I don't know,
- 11:10like they're trying to establish a Stephen King universe with
- 11:13this series. And just as a side note, Jay,
- 11:17the Dark Tower is being done by Amazon the entire series, and
- 11:21they're saying it's going to be even bigger than The Rings of
- 11:24Power. So just as an aside.
- 11:26Interesting if they ever get to it.
- 11:27They keep trying to do the Dark Tower and they've had a lot of
- 11:30false starts. Including.
- 11:32I saw a fresh post about it recently though that sounds
- 11:34like. It's, I hope it happens.
- 11:35I'm excited for it to happen. If it can.
- 11:37That would be great. And just so you know, maybe you
- 11:40already know this many of Stephen King's novels have been
- 11:42set in Derry. So I think what they're trying
- 11:44to do is kind of bring them together into, you know, one
- 11:49timeline is what they're started doing in the TV or universe.
- 11:52Yeah, and characters, which I shared with you earlier, a
- 11:56spoiler alerted for those who haven't seen it, but the
- 11:58character Dick Halloran from The Shining, who has the gift, is
- 12:03very much a major player in this first season of Welcome to
- 12:06Derry. And he's like a we catch up with
- 12:08him as a young army Lieutenant, and he's using his gifts to try
- 12:13to seek something out. And what is he trying to seek
- 12:15out? Well, you're going to have to
- 12:16watch the series, but I'll tell you they've spared no expense
- 12:20with the quality. Every episode was like a little
- 12:22movie. I'm totally into it and I've
- 12:23been burning through these episode.
- 12:25I mean, I only got it at the time of this recording,
- 12:27probably. Well, three days ago and I'm
- 12:30I'm, I'm, I'm approaching episode 8, the final episode.
- 12:34It is. Yeah, and Bill Skarsgard, who
- 12:37played Pennywise in the films, is reprising his role.
- 12:40So that also gives it more half that they didn't recast that
- 12:43role or they just, you know, with somebody cheaper they got
- 12:46they got the the real Pennywise and you get to see his origin.
- 12:50So it's the beginning. This is the origin of him prior
- 12:53to the IT movies. Yeah, exactly.
- 12:56But this is set in 1962. And then there's some time
- 12:59jumping that goes back to 19 O 8.
- 13:02So it's really. Yeah, it's really cool, Jay.
- 13:03I think you would enjoy it. Yeah.
- 13:05So far, it's a It's a 5 out of five.
- 13:08Well, let's let's dig into some of the visuals and audio.
- 13:11I want to hear about the sound. I want to hear about the quality
- 13:13of the how deep are the blacks? They're deep.
- 13:16They're deep. How about the plaids?
- 13:17How do the plaids there's? A couple of scenes in the sewer
- 13:20where it's pitch black and all you see are the eyes of.
- 13:23It's a clown just burning through.
- 13:26And you're like, holy crap. And you can see the shadow.
- 13:29You see the, like the tunnels. All you can see the brickwork
- 13:32inside the tunnels. Yeah, It's really great.
- 13:34All the clothing is rendered perfectly.
- 13:36I mean, it's a new series. It's HBO.
- 13:37They have money to put behind these things.
- 13:39But the. Yeah.
- 13:40And it's like a full audio soundscape.
- 13:43Like you hear a little cricket. You hear things moving around,
- 13:46running behind you. Yeah, like it's for your system
- 13:49at home. And for mine, it's perfectly
- 13:51calibrated for that. You're going to get every, every
- 13:54squeeze of juice from the sound stage. 100% I hate.
- 13:57I hate when they waste that when they don't have things running
- 14:00around you. It's like, why would you not at
- 14:02all times? There should always be something
- 14:04running around or or ways squeaking or just like something
- 14:07in the background always, unless you're in a library and
- 14:10everybody's quiet and reading. And even then you should have
- 14:12pages turning, but you should have something always and to
- 14:15waste that on a when you're here at 7.1 or higher.
- 14:19I want always something from those back channels and the back
- 14:22up channels. Yeah, and you get that with
- 14:25Welcome to Dairy. It's a it's a full sound stage
- 14:28and it's perfectly and nicely utilized.
- 14:30So yeah, it's a great series. Check it out if you haven't seen
- 14:33it viewers, but Jay, you will get to see it because I'll be
- 14:37more than pleased to loan it to you in the preferred OK
- 14:40steelbook variant, which is I know is also important.
- 14:43Wow, you've got that one. OK, I'm excited for that.
- 14:45And I will, I'm sure, watch it with executive producer Aldo
- 14:48Roma. That's pretty cool.
- 14:49Perhaps we'll sub out Colombo Saturdays, which maybe I'll talk
- 14:52about on a future episode with with the with the dairy from
- 14:56the. Saturdays.
- 14:57I love Colombo. I'm going to talk to you about
- 14:59that on another episode. And you're going to watch 1.
- 15:01You promised to watch one. With me, I'm in 100%.
- 15:04We're going to watch on I think the one with Leonard Nimoy, but
- 15:06I'm still, I'm fine tuning this one, so we'll get to that.
- 15:09I have to. I have to ask you something.
- 15:11I want to ask you this live on the show to see.
- 15:13If you were. It's for me.
- 15:14It's a 4K purchase. I'm thinking of buying and I'm
- 15:17torn. It's about $55.
- 15:20It's an Arrow release. I remember seeing this a deluxe.
- 15:23Limited. Is it a?
- 15:24Limited Deluxe Limited I believe so I might be.
- 15:27I don't know how much comes with it, but the movie is Roy
- 15:31Schneider in Blue Thunder, the helicopter movie.
- 15:35Have you seen it? I haven't seen it, but I did it
- 15:37caught my it is the deluxe one with all this way.
- 15:40Is it It caught my eye too. But then I consulted with
- 15:43ChatGPT to get the audience and RT scores and all that kind of
- 15:46stuff, and it's a, it's a bit of a mess.
- 15:48It's. Really.
- 15:50Yeah, they they tried to do something and it didn't quite
- 15:53hang together, but that's what the critics said because.
- 15:56I'm reading the reviews and I'm seeing good stuff but.
- 16:00OK, well then dive in. I don't think like 55 is not a a
- 16:03crazy price point. It's not like it's you know,
- 16:05we've seen some of these special editions that are like 8999
- 16:09bucks like that. If you haven't seen it, that's
- 16:11you're waiting in a little bit deep.
- 16:13You want to get out over your skis, as they say, but 55 bucks,
- 16:16that's the. Capper.
- 16:17I would say 55 is the capper if that thing and it if that's it's
- 16:20a six at the front of that, I don't want it but.
- 16:22Get it out of here. I don't know, I'm thinking
- 16:25about. It you know what, I would watch
- 16:26the trailer on YouTube and then see if you're still excited to
- 16:29watch it this. Is why This is why I bring this
- 16:32to the show, because you are wise and that is exactly what
- 16:35I'm going to do. Did you know that the short
- 16:38lived series that was based on Blue Thunder came out right
- 16:42after that and it starred Dana Carvey?
- 16:44Really. Yeah, he played the role that
- 16:46Daniel Stern plays as, like the sidekick of the main pilot.
- 16:50It's like none of the guys from the movies are in it.
- 16:52It's Roy Schneider and Daniel Stern.
- 16:54The I don't know who was the lead in the TV series, but Dana
- 16:57Carvey played the Daniel Stern role and then Dick Buttkiss and
- 17:01somebody else, another football player, ex football player were
- 17:04in it. I would almost purchase that
- 17:07series. I watched the TV series but I
- 17:09did not like the movie I may have seen but I did like the TV
- 17:12series. Shortly of like 13 episodes
- 17:14cancelled. Yeah, that's perfect for you,
- 17:16though. You love those.
- 17:17I do. I already see it happening.
- 17:19You don't even need to watch the trailer.
- 17:20Just go ahead and buy Blue Thunder and get this limited
- 17:23series while you're at it. Just put it all together and
- 17:26you're stalking it's. It came out in Blu-ray.
- 17:28I know at the same time they released it on the same day in
- 17:31Blu-ray of. Course they did jy I don't know.
- 17:35You know what? You work hard.
- 17:36You should watch hard. I just might.
- 17:38You might, but still watch the trailer just to be sure.
- 17:41I think I will. Thank you.
- 17:43Thank you. All right.
- 17:44Is that it? Well.
- 17:44I think that's it. It kind of feels like an
- 17:46episode. Do we have time for one now?
- 17:47We I don't think we do. Next week, though, we'll come
- 17:49back with some more RIP from the headlines because those are
- 17:52always fun. And I know that our audience
- 17:54enjoys it as well. Somehow on some level, they will
- 17:57enjoy it. So thank you very much for being

- 18:02Mountain and good luck with your purchase of Blue Thunder the

- 18:11so that we can do that together. That may be why not worth worth
- 18:14it. And then I'll feel like it's $25
- 18:16each even though I'm paying for it.
- 18:18All the value is credit across two people.
- 18:21I'll buy the whiskey. You can deduct it from the cost
- 18:23of the four Ki. Don't know how that works.
