- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: best inside of your units.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Let's get back to.
- 0:10Speaker 1: OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We are not at the Broadway studios today on the
- 0:21Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show. We are at Southern Steer Butcher in
- 0:24Speaker 1: Saratoga Springs, 1705 North Redwood Road. Even if you're downtown
- 0:28Speaker 1: right now, it is worth The Trip, incredible meats, incredible discounts,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and they are hooking up everyone who mentions the Sean
- 0:34Speaker 1: O'Connell Show.
- 0:36Speaker 3: How about this?
- 0:36Speaker 4: A sampler combo, 75 bucks will get you a couple
- 0:39Speaker 4: pounds of ground beef, three pounds of marinated chicken, two
- 0:42Speaker 4: pounds of handmade sausage, and two pounds of marinated steak tips,
- 0:46Speaker 4: and those marinated steak tips are tender, juicy, delicious.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You can't screw them up.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Throw them in the air fryer, throw them on the grill,
- 0:54Speaker 1: cook them however you want, and they're going to be delightful.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Going to have to leave here with some of those.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And maybe I'll have an opportunity to share some this
- 1:02Speaker 1: weekend with our next guest.
- 1:04Speaker 3: It's Weddle Week. He's going into the Ring of Honor.
- 1:07Speaker 1: He is the Utah football legend, the, I believe, future
- 1:10Speaker 1: NFL Hall of Famer. He is the head coach of
- 1:12Speaker 1: the Rancho Bernardo Broncos. He's our guy, Eric Weddle.
- 1:16Speaker 3: E-Dub, what's up?
- 1:18Speaker 5: What's going on, man? Do they ship out of the state?
- 1:21Speaker 5: Because I need to order some of that meat. I
- 1:25Speaker 5: can't have enough meat in the household.
- 1:27Speaker 3: You know what? They'll ship to Eric Weddle. Big Utah
- 1:30Speaker 3: fans down here.
- 1:33Speaker 1: You can make requests that the mere mortals among us cannot.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Look, it's good luck. It's good luck.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I always start the conversation we have with a little
- 1:44Speaker 1: question about your Rancho Bernardo Broncos head coach of the team,
- 1:48Speaker 1: obviously your son playing for the team, and big win
- 1:53Speaker 1: over Torrey Pines. First win on the road at Torrey
- 1:56Speaker 1: since 2008, is that right?
- 1:58Speaker 5: That is correct. Man, just talk about a gritty, tough...
- 2:04Speaker 5: I mean, Torrey Pines historically is one of the better
- 2:07Speaker 5: programs in San Diego and always a tough team to
- 2:11Speaker 5: go against. I mean, the stats show it, right? We
- 2:14Speaker 5: had one there... in a long time. So, the boys
- 2:19Speaker 5: played hard. I mean, outside of a couple misfortune plays, right? Like,
- 2:25Speaker 5: I don't like to blame the rest, but man, there
- 2:27Speaker 5: were like five calls in that game that were either
- 2:31Speaker 5: missed calls or not that could have swayed and made
- 2:34Speaker 5: it not such a close game where we had to
- 2:37Speaker 5: score 21 points in the second half on three possessions.
- 2:40Speaker 5: We had five total possessions in the game. Murph, like,
- 2:45Speaker 5: It's just crazy how we get into these games four
- 2:47Speaker 5: drives of 15 plays or more. That's the type of
- 2:50Speaker 5: game it was. So really proud. We didn't waver. We
- 2:54Speaker 5: stayed connected. And won at the end, man, and it
- 2:57Speaker 5: was a thrilling game.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And this week it's a Utah team.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Westlake taking the trip down there to sunny San Diego.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That will be, of course, Friday night, and then on
- 3:08Speaker 1: Saturday you're coming here to the Utah game. What's the
- 3:10Speaker 1: scouting report on Westlake?
- 3:12Speaker 5: They're 3-1. Yeah, Westlake, really good program. They play tough,
- 3:17Speaker 5: play hard. Got some talented dudes. The receiver is, I believe,
- 3:24Speaker 5: a Utah State commit, number 13. And then they have
- 3:28Speaker 5: a D lineman, number eight. That's one of the best,
- 3:33Speaker 5: probably the best player we see defensively. And we have
- 3:38Speaker 5: to have a plan for him every snap. and know
- 3:42Speaker 5: where he's at and can't let him ruin the game,
- 3:45Speaker 5: which he can on any play. So I'm excited for
- 3:49Speaker 5: the challenge and the matchup. I think our boys are.
- 3:52Speaker 5: I think they understand what's the mindset that needs to
- 3:56Speaker 5: be taken. Like this team's coming down here out of state,
- 3:59Speaker 5: so want to take it to us, and we have
- 4:02Speaker 5: to defend our home crowd, home state, and take it
- 4:07Speaker 5: to them.
- 4:08Speaker 1: All right, talking a little Utah football now. You're coming
- 4:11Speaker 1: into town for no big deal, just, you know, immortalization
- 4:15Speaker 1: on the side of Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's Eric Weddle Week.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You're being inducted into the Ring of Honor. And we
- 4:21Speaker 1: talked to you about this when it was announced that
- 4:23Speaker 1: it would be happening. Now that the reality of it
- 4:26Speaker 1: is here, it's happening in just a couple of days.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Has it changed the way you're thinking about it, your process?
- 4:32Speaker 1: You know, just tell me what it means to you again.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I think now that it's, here I'm probably most
- 4:40Speaker 5: excited about is to just see the fans and and
- 4:45Speaker 5: I know I'm going around like early to different tailgates
- 4:49Speaker 5: and going in different uh parts of the stadium throughout
- 4:53Speaker 5: the first quarter to say hello and hang out with
- 4:56Speaker 5: fans I mean really like sharing the experience like like
- 5:00Speaker 5: I said sharing it with everyone uh that had a
- 5:03Speaker 5: hand in it or supported me uh to try to
- 5:09Speaker 5: let them be involved in it. So I think that's
- 5:11Speaker 5: what I'm most excited for, is to see old teammates.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I know I got a few texts from old teammates
- 5:16Speaker 5: that are coming in to reminisce and be there. So
- 5:20Speaker 5: it's just going to be awesome. Like, I don't get
- 5:23Speaker 5: too emotional about things. I'm sure I may get a
- 5:27Speaker 5: little emotional about it. Maybe no one would really recognize
- 5:30Speaker 5: it because I'm a cold-faced type of guy. But like
- 5:36Speaker 5: you said, it's... This is like one in a million, right,
- 5:41Speaker 5: to be able to be in this situation. And I
- 5:44Speaker 5: don't take it for granted and really humbled by it all.
- 5:46Speaker 5: And I'm just going to take it all in and
- 5:48Speaker 5: enjoy every second of it.
- 5:51Speaker 3: What did you like from your Utes in the Idaho game?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Obviously, it went kind of the way that we expected
- 5:57Speaker 1: it to, that we thought it should. You know, big demolition.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You scored a bunch of points. You held them under
- 6:03Speaker 1: three scores. I would have liked to see that, maybe
- 6:05Speaker 1: even more dominant performance defensively, but what did you like
- 6:08Speaker 1: from Utah in week one against Idaho?
- 6:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we talked about it last week. I
- 6:17Speaker 5: wanted to see clean operation. I didn't want to see
- 6:19Speaker 5: pre-snap penalties. Obviously, there'll be physical errors and mistakes just
- 6:24Speaker 5: because it's live action going against someone that you don't know,
- 6:27Speaker 5: so that's going to happen, but man, it was just
- 6:31Speaker 5: an exciting brand of football. And I liked how Idaho
- 6:35Speaker 5: fought back for a little bit and really threw some
- 6:39Speaker 5: punches back. It wasn't just a total rollover like some
- 6:44Speaker 5: games can be in that situation. And going against that
- 6:48Speaker 5: offensive line for Idaho, I think they were all returning
- 6:51Speaker 5: starters or older guys that had a lot of game experience.
- 6:54Speaker 5: So it was good for us to get our feet
- 6:57Speaker 5: wet against that group on the defensive line, and I
- 7:02Speaker 5: just think we got a chance. Obviously, a big game
- 7:05Speaker 5: against Arkansas, but I think we showed our potential with
- 7:08Speaker 5: the running game. Wayshawn is just so fun to watch.
- 7:14Speaker 5: His physicality, his twitchiness, his one-cut ability. Obviously, the receiving
- 7:19Speaker 5: on the backfield, and our perimeter guys. Being able to
- 7:23Speaker 5: just throw it up and our guy come down with
- 7:25Speaker 5: the ball and win those one-on-one games. tight contest is
- 7:29Speaker 5: something that I think is pivotal to have a great
- 7:32Speaker 5: offense and to make some waves down the stretch against
- 7:37Speaker 5: good teams.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You, as much as anyone, maybe more than a lot
- 7:41Speaker 1: of people, you have been a big fan of Bert
- 7:44Speaker 1: Ficklin and his potential and we saw good things from
- 7:47Speaker 1: him in game one and he had at least one
- 7:49Speaker 1: throw go viral because he's rolling right and he flips
- 7:52Speaker 1: his hips and he throws a dot and all that stuff.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I bring it up because They have found this nice
- 7:58Speaker 1: harmony with him and Devin Dampier, but they're both playmakers,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and you've got to get both of those guys opportunities
- 8:04Speaker 1: as often as you can in a game. How do
- 8:07Speaker 1: you manage it moving forward? How do you manage it
- 8:08Speaker 1: in obviously a much tougher test against Arkansas? How do
- 8:11Speaker 1: you get the most out of Bird, not just Devin?
- 8:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think the package of plays, whether
- 8:19Speaker 5: it's him running the ball, whether it's him, you know,
- 8:22Speaker 5: Devin motioning out, and now he's playing true quarterback, not–
- 8:26Speaker 5: not overdoing it, and you're forcing the issue, but also
- 8:30Speaker 5: allowing the chance to make plays for the offense with Bird.
- 8:38Speaker 5: So I like that he's getting in there. I just
- 8:41Speaker 5: don't want it to get too much where you're affecting
- 8:43Speaker 5: the rhythm of Devin in the offense of being successful
- 8:48Speaker 5: series and series. So I think they manage it well.
- 8:52Speaker 5: I just don't want it to be, like I said,
- 8:53Speaker 5: don't want to be too much on the offense because
- 8:57Speaker 5: as a quarterback, you like to be in rhythm. You
- 8:58Speaker 5: like to be in those situations. You like to see it.
- 9:01Speaker 5: You like to learn from it from series to series.
- 9:03Speaker 5: So as long as they manage that, I think it
- 9:05Speaker 5: will be fine. And the more we can give him
- 9:08Speaker 5: experience for when he takes over, it will be great.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Eric Weddle is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 9:14Speaker 3: It is Weddle Week.
- 9:15Speaker 1: He's going into the Utah Ring of Honor this weekend.
- 9:18Speaker 3: It's a late kickoff. It's a true night game.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Arkansas is only the second SEC team to come to Rice-Eccles.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Obviously, Florida did it a couple of weeks ago, or a.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Couple of years ago, I should say. I've been, like,
- 9:31Speaker 1: you know, dipping my toes in the Arkansas waters, Dub.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I've been, like, what are their podcasts saying? What are
- 9:36Speaker 1: their alumni saying?
- 9:37Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh. Me, too.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Me, too.
- 9:39Speaker 5: What are they?
- 9:40Speaker 2: And, like.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Even what their coach is saying, I think he's a
- 9:43Speaker 1: good coach, but he's more focused on the kickoff time
- 9:46Speaker 1: than any other thing that is going on in this game.
- 9:49Speaker 1: And I'm like, I'm trying not to get too gassed up,
- 9:52Speaker 1: but I'm like, I don't think Arkansas has any idea
- 9:54Speaker 1: what they're going to be walking into.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Are you getting the same sense?
- 9:58Speaker 5: A thousand percent. It's the typical arrogance of the SEC.
- 10:02Speaker 5: And coming into, oh, your stadium's only 55,000. And, oh,
- 10:08Speaker 5: it's not even that big. And, oh, it can't be
- 10:12Speaker 5: that loud because of the people. Yeah, when you're going
- 10:15Speaker 5: full start six times tomorrow night, Saturday night, and we
- 10:19Speaker 5: get after your guys' tails and beat you by 30,
- 10:22Speaker 5: I'm going to come on the following week and remind
- 10:25Speaker 5: all the podcasts this ain't your just ho-hum mid-major it
- 10:31Speaker 5: was 20 years ago. We're coming for heads, and Arkansas
- 10:36Speaker 5: is next on the list. So I've been hearing it
- 10:38Speaker 5: over and over again just on my timeline, hearing these guys.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Obviously– It's just funny, commentators and podcast people that aren't
- 10:48Speaker 5: even affiliated with the team, they're just talking heads. Like,
- 10:51Speaker 5: you played, and you played on the Utes, so you
- 10:54Speaker 5: understand kind of like a night game at Utah, right?
- 10:58Speaker 5: These people don't understand. You don't come in to Salt
- 11:01Speaker 5: Lake at right cycles in a night game and come
- 11:02Speaker 5: away with a win. It just doesn't happen. Why don't
- 11:07Speaker 5: you ask Caleb Williams how those games went when they
- 11:09Speaker 5: played night games in Utah? They lose.
- 11:13Speaker 2: So.
- 11:14Speaker 5: I can't wait to be a part of it, to
- 11:17Speaker 5: celebrate in the locker room, fighting the Utah Man fight song,
- 11:23Speaker 5: and celebrating.
- 11:26Speaker 1: So Arkansas has got some stuff to figure out, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: they've got one guy who's a projected potential first-round pick.
- 11:33Speaker 1: This Quincy Rhodes Jr., 97, playing DN for them, playing
- 11:37Speaker 1: on their D-line. He's a real problem if he's healthy. Now,
- 11:40Speaker 1: he didn't play a ton against North Alabama. Maybe they
- 11:43Speaker 1: were saving him so he'd be more healthy against Utah.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I think that's what's going on. But let's just assume
- 11:48Speaker 1: he's 100%. You don't want to, like, overdo it and
- 11:52Speaker 1: over-index to only worry about one guy on their defense.
- 11:55Speaker 3: But you also have to pay attention to it. Like
- 11:58Speaker 3: you're saying, when they've.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Got a game wrecker, a potential game wrecker, you've got
- 12:02Speaker 1: to pay attention to it. And this is an inexperienced
- 12:04Speaker 1: offensive line that's working in a lot of new things.
- 12:07Speaker 3: How do you handle that?
- 12:08Speaker 1: How do you handle a potential outlier-type talent that's on
- 12:12Speaker 1: the defensive line for Arkansas.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, you know, you know, we're, we're kind
- 12:20Speaker 5: of going at it in a, in a very smaller
- 12:25Speaker 5: example this week, but the offense line, you have to
- 12:28Speaker 5: play together, right? You got to have great technique. You
- 12:31Speaker 5: don't want to like a lot of times offense alignment.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I think in general, like when you're going against a
- 12:37Speaker 5: really good player on the other side that you want
- 12:39Speaker 5: to get your hands on as quick as possible and,
- 12:42Speaker 5: and then you want to lunge, and instead of just
- 12:45Speaker 5: setting square and understanding where your help is, right? Are
- 12:48Speaker 5: we getting the center to slide to you? Are we
- 12:50Speaker 5: a full slide? Are we a four-man slide? Am I
- 12:52Speaker 5: getting the back to chip with you? Like, there's so
- 12:55Speaker 5: much that the offensive coach can help the offensive line
- 12:57Speaker 5: when you're going against a premier player that it's going
- 13:01Speaker 5: to take everyone, but you don't. It's like Miles Garrett
- 13:05Speaker 5: or Aaron Donald or these guys. Like, you don't want
- 13:08Speaker 5: to ever leave them one-on-one, right?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Like that's just dumb football because they're just that good.
- 13:13Speaker 5: So some plays you'll have to like quick game 30s,
- 13:17Speaker 5: 50s where you're getting five out. The quarterback has to
- 13:20Speaker 5: make the offensive line right. You know what I'm saying?
- 13:22Speaker 5: Like that's on the quarterback. But when we're going six,
- 13:24Speaker 5: seven man protection, be smart, do what your coaches do.
- 13:29Speaker 5: And I honestly think offensive line are going to play
- 13:31Speaker 5: great on Saturday night because of the coaches, the strength coaches,
- 13:36Speaker 5: the strength staff, the work they put in. They're going
- 13:39Speaker 5: to continue week by week to show what they're all about.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Have you talked to Morgan this week and been like, hey,
- 13:45Speaker 1: make sure that you're playing some Weddell highlights for the
- 13:48Speaker 1: guys that are on the team? A lot of these
- 13:50Speaker 1: guys were born after you played at the University of Utah,
- 13:52Speaker 1: so they know you from your NFL career. I don't
- 13:55Speaker 1: know how many of them have seen the highlights. Did
- 13:58Speaker 1: you tell Morgan, hey, make sure they know whose presence
- 14:02Speaker 1: they're going to be amongst this weekend?
- 14:06Speaker 5: Well, you know me as good as anyone, so I
- 14:09Speaker 5: doubt you would think I would say something like that.
- 14:14Speaker 5: I did talk to him Saturday night. He called me
- 14:17Speaker 5: just to check in with the game and then some
- 14:21Speaker 5: other games that were going on, so we chatted for
- 14:23Speaker 5: a little bit. But this week, like, nothing needs to
- 14:28Speaker 5: be said. All I care about, and I said this,
- 14:30Speaker 5: I think I said this last week, I don't care
- 14:33Speaker 5: if anything is acknowledged about me as long as we
- 14:36Speaker 5: get this win. I really do not care. These kids,
- 14:41Speaker 5: whether they know about me or not, is irrelevant in
- 14:44Speaker 5: the grand scheme of things. Just focus on ball, focus
- 14:47Speaker 5: on your job, and let's get this done.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Eric Weddle for a couple more minutes here on the
- 14:53Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show. Weddle week will conclude on Saturday night
- 14:57Speaker 1: when he is inducted into the ring of honor at
- 15:00Speaker 1: the Utah versus Arkansas game. The biggest story in college
- 15:05Speaker 1: football this week was not Utah's win over Idaho, even
- 15:08Speaker 1: though we stay pretty central here. Of course, it was
- 15:11Speaker 1: a lot of former Utah guys connected now to that
- 15:15Speaker 1: University of Michigan team that got an extra second on
- 15:18Speaker 1: the clock after a crazy replay, after a hard-fought game
- 15:21Speaker 1: against the Western Michigan team that kind of took it
- 15:24Speaker 1: to them. I know you have some thoughts on this scenario,
- 15:27Speaker 1: so please share them with us on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Yeah. You know, I couldn't– I didn't start watching the game.
- 15:38Speaker 5: We– Gage and I went to the San Diego State
- 15:40Speaker 5: game to see Steve and his son Stone, who's the
- 15:43Speaker 5: backup quarterback there. And then, obviously, you know, it's the hometown,
- 15:46Speaker 5: so I want to support the guys and the players.
- 15:52Speaker 5: So I didn't start watching the game until about– six
- 15:55Speaker 5: minutes left in the game. Gage had been watching it,
- 15:57Speaker 5: and he's like, Eastern or West, what, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Western, yeah, yeah. Western.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Yeah. He's like, Western Michigan's going to win. And I'm like, no,
- 16:07Speaker 5: they're not. Like, they're going to pull it out. Like,
- 16:10Speaker 5: that's just how it goes. Like, they're just figuring it out.
- 16:15Speaker 5: And then he's like, Dad, they're really, they're going to win. Like,
- 16:18Speaker 5: they're up. And I'm like, what are you talking about? So,
- 16:21Speaker 5: I started watching it, and I'm just getting blown up,
- 16:25Speaker 5: whether it's on Twitter, whether it's on text messages from coaches,
- 16:31Speaker 5: from other schools, this, that, and the other. And I
- 16:34Speaker 5: don't say that to say that I'm right. I don't
- 16:37Speaker 5: really care about anything outside of Utah football. And I
- 16:45Speaker 5: actually want Michigan to win. deep down but i don't
- 16:48Speaker 5: like i'm not i'm not watching them i don't i
- 16:50Speaker 5: don't really like support them so when i'm seeing all
- 16:54Speaker 5: these messages come in like i don't i then i
- 16:56Speaker 5: gotta go what's going on how are how are they
- 16:58Speaker 5: playing and they're struggling long story short it should be
- 17:02Speaker 5: they should be everyone knows that uh the voters know
- 17:06Speaker 5: it and it's unfortunate that western michigan got uh hosed
- 17:13Speaker 5: somehow some way that they're not going to have that
- 17:16Speaker 5: win on their resume for the rest of the time. Right.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Like they probably will never be in that situation again
- 17:21Speaker 5: to beat Michigan, the big brother. Uh, it would be like,
- 17:26Speaker 5: you know, what Utah state is, I think is, I
- 17:28Speaker 5: believe it's beat us. Right. Some, somewhere down the future,
- 17:32Speaker 5: maybe even like Weber state, like imagine Weber state in
- 17:35Speaker 5: a game against us and they beat us. And so,
- 17:38Speaker 5: but then we, that way it gets taken away. Like
- 17:40Speaker 5: that's basically what happened. Uh, But they made the play
- 17:43Speaker 5: at the end, and we'll see. I didn't really watch
- 17:49Speaker 5: the game other than the last, and I saw what
- 17:51Speaker 5: I saw. I think they'll be in a rude awakening,
- 17:54Speaker 5: Oklahoma coming to town, and we'll see what happens. I
- 18:00Speaker 5: don't know. Don't know. Don't care. I don't need to
- 18:03Speaker 5: say I was right or wrong. It doesn't matter to me.
- 18:05Speaker 5: I live my life. I don't need to profess what
- 18:08Speaker 5: I said. four months ago was right. It does not matter.
- 18:15Speaker 5: Everyone can have their own opinion. And, uh, I wish
- 18:18Speaker 5: those guys the best. Seriously. Like, I don't want to
- 18:20Speaker 5: see anyone not play well. I've been there and it's tough.
- 18:24Speaker 5: We'll see how Underwood, uh, responds to the lack of
- 18:28Speaker 5: good play and the, the, the attention that's on them.
- 18:31Speaker 5: And especially coach with basically saying, if you don't play better, you're,
- 18:35Speaker 5: we're going in a different direction. So let's see how
- 18:37Speaker 5: he handles it. And, uh, Truth be told, I'm hoping
- 18:42Speaker 5: that he responds the right way for him in his
- 18:45Speaker 5: career because if not, he won't be playing quarterback anymore.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Well, you don't have to take the victory lap because
- 18:51Speaker 1: everyone already said, we're sorry, Eric Weddle, you were right
- 18:55Speaker 1: about Bryce Underwood. And it was hilarious for the rest
- 18:58Speaker 1: of us to see because when an average fan who
- 19:01Speaker 1: doesn't know what they're watching on the same level you
- 19:03Speaker 1: is trying to argue with something that you said that
- 19:05Speaker 1: wasn't even hypercritical, it was just like an observation, and
- 19:09Speaker 1: then obviously– They're all feeling the same way four months later.
- 19:13Speaker 3: It was pretty hilarious.
- 19:15Speaker 1: But Eric Weddle knows what he's watching when he's watching
- 19:17Speaker 1: quarterbacks because that's.
- 19:19Speaker 3: What he was trying to defeat for 14 years in
- 19:21Speaker 3: the NFL, people.
- 19:22Speaker 1: With that in mind, and maybe you have the same
- 19:26Speaker 1: evaluation of Drake May as you do of Bryce Underwood,
- 19:29Speaker 1: but he had a disastrous start to the NFL season
- 19:31Speaker 1: last night. I don't know how much of it you
- 19:33Speaker 1: got to watch because you're coaching and all that stuff.
- 19:35Speaker 1: But three turnovers for Drake May, including a game-deciding interception
- 19:39Speaker 1: and when they were driving for a potential touchdown or
- 19:42Speaker 1: at least a field goal to tie.
- 19:44Speaker 3: What's going on with Drake May?
- 19:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I watched. I watched, I think about
- 19:51Speaker 5: the first quarter and then we had night practice last night.
- 19:53Speaker 5: So I saw the highlights of how those last few
- 19:57Speaker 5: series went. And it just goes back to like, even
- 20:00Speaker 5: the pros do dumb things. And it's, it's just a reality.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Like it's human nature. You try to limit the, the
- 20:10Speaker 5: mistakes that are like, like I just, perfect example, like
- 20:15Speaker 5: you're looking at that last play, the under 20 seconds.
- 20:18Speaker 5: It's knowing the situation. It's knowing the play, right? You
- 20:22Speaker 5: got both tackles cut blocking. So that, as a quarterback
- 20:26Speaker 5: is saying, it's a rocker step.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Ball out, right?
- 20:29Speaker 5: If not, then I'm just running, right? Like I understand,
- 20:32Speaker 5: like I have no protection. So for him to backpedal,
- 20:37Speaker 5: lean away and just throw the ball up is just,
- 20:40Speaker 5: that's like a fireable offense as a quarterback. And to
- 20:44Speaker 5: see that from a season, like a second year guy,
- 20:47Speaker 5: it's just unfortunate because you just can't make that mistake.
- 20:52Speaker 5: And so the mistakes that happen are all in my
- 20:57Speaker 5: mind fixable, but when he goes against good teams, this
- 21:01Speaker 5: has kind of been what happens. And now their, their
- 21:04Speaker 5: schedule is tough with a lot of good teams. So,
- 21:07Speaker 5: They'll get it right. He'll figure it out because he
- 21:09Speaker 5: has the ability and the mind. But to see those
- 21:13Speaker 5: kind of mistakes late in the game where you know
- 21:15Speaker 5: they're going over those situations, you know they're stressing in
- 21:19Speaker 5: this situation, how are we going to play? This is
- 21:22Speaker 5: the call. And to be, like, on the other side
- 21:25Speaker 5: of it is really unfortunate as a coach because you're
- 21:28Speaker 5: just like, what the heck are you thinking right now?
- 21:31Speaker 5: But even pros lose their minds. So it's great, a
- 21:35Speaker 5: reminder as a coach to, like, gosh, I'm going to
- 21:37Speaker 5: rip Gage's you-know-what for a decision, well, dang, the pros
- 21:42Speaker 5: are doing it just as bad.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, you do see some of that.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Not supposed to see it as often in the pros,
- 21:50Speaker 1: but you do get it every now and again.
- 21:51Speaker 5: No, definitely not.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I'm not even going to ask you.
- 21:54Speaker 1: About the Rams-Niners game because I don't want you to
- 21:56Speaker 1: say hurtful things when we're celebrating you this week, but
- 22:01Speaker 1: will you have a chance to even watch it tonight?
- 22:04Speaker 5: You know what's about to happen tonight.
- 22:08Speaker 3: I do.
- 22:09Speaker 5: I do.
- 22:10Speaker 3: I know it's about to happen.
- 22:12Speaker 1: The 49ers are going to dominate Miles Garrett.
- 22:15Speaker 3: They're going to make him look like it's his first year.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Even you don't believe that. Even you don't believe that
- 22:21Speaker 2: in the heart of hearts. You don't believe that. Even
- 22:23Speaker 2: though you're saying it right now, you don't truly believe it.
- 22:26Speaker 2: When we talk about the Utes, we really believe. If
- 22:28Speaker 2: we had to go play in Ohio State, we would
- 22:33Speaker 2: think we could go win. But you know Australia. They
- 22:36Speaker 2: went four days earlier because they're worried about the time.
- 22:38Speaker 5: You know what the Rams did? They said, man, we're
- 22:40Speaker 5: going to fly at 5,000 feet. We're going to sleep in.
- 22:43Speaker 5: We're going to sleep the whole time. We're going to
- 22:44Speaker 5: wake up the next day, and we're just going to
- 22:46Speaker 5: go play. And we're just going to go beat your
- 22:47Speaker 5: faces in. So, you know who's not worried about the
- 22:50Speaker 5: time change? The Rams. And you know who is? Arkansas
- 22:55Speaker 5: and the Niners. And what is both going to happen
- 22:57Speaker 5: to them? They're going to get their faces drugged in
- 23:00Speaker 5: the grass.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You know what I'm most mad about with this Niners-Rams
- 23:03Speaker 1: game is the Rams are like, we're not even going
- 23:05Speaker 1: to bring Aaron Donald. That's how not worried about this
- 23:09Speaker 1: matchup the Rams are.
- 23:10Speaker 2: They're like, this is a– Yeah, we don't even need
- 23:12Speaker 2: a– hey, give them a couple more weeks to get ready.
- 23:14Speaker 5: We're fine. We'll manage these couple weeks. We're not worried
- 23:17Speaker 5: about Purdy and half the guys that are already hurt. Like,
- 23:21Speaker 5: we're good.
- 23:22Speaker 3: That's disrespectful. All right? I hate it.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Like, if Arkansas was rolling into Salt Lake City– And
- 23:30Speaker 1: they're like, we're not bringing Quincy Rhodes Jr. He's not
- 23:32Speaker 1: coming on the trip. And we'll be like, oh, because
- 23:34Speaker 1: he's hurt? No, we're just going to give him a
- 23:36Speaker 1: couple more weeks to get ready for games that we're
- 23:38Speaker 1: actually worried about. I would be furious.
- 23:41Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. So maybe the Niners will take that approach. Maybe.
- 23:45Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I hope. I hope they're as mad as I am.
- 23:53Speaker 5: We shall see. I will be sending a text about
- 23:56Speaker 5: 9 o'clock tonight. So be ready for it.
- 23:59Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Well, you're the man. Absolutely love you, dog. Excited to
- 24:01Speaker 1: see you this weekend. Good luck to you and the
- 24:04Speaker 1: boys tomorrow night against Westlake. And, yeah, looking forward to Saturday.
- 24:10Speaker 5: You got it, bro. Can't wait to see you. Love you.
- 24:12Speaker 5: And let's go Utes, baby!
- 24:15Speaker 3: That's the legend.
- 24:16Speaker 1: That's Eric Weddle going into the Ring of Honor Saturday
- 24:20Speaker 1: against Arkansas.
- 24:22Speaker 3: He is the absolute best.
