- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Huskies go
- 0:03Speaker 1: to Milwaukee take on Marquette noontime game, and it's going
- 0:08Speaker 1: to be on the River one O five nine that
- 0:11Speaker 1: day on radio, So tune in for it with us
- 0:14Speaker 1: a couple of quick notes to finish up on the
- 0:16Speaker 1: on the games. We just saw Saint John's holding them
- 0:20Speaker 1: to forty points. Dan. That really got the nation's attention again.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It looked to me like all those talking heads that
- 0:27Speaker 1: had Yukon seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth best team in
- 0:30Speaker 1: the country rethought their theories after that one. Am I
- 0:34Speaker 1: accurate with that?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well?
- 0:35Speaker 3: I mean the talking heads, they just they talk after
- 0:38Speaker 3: every game, right, So it's like, you know, throughout the year,
- 0:42Speaker 3: you just you've got to be able to try that,
- 0:45Speaker 3: you know, turn off a lot of the external I
- 0:47Speaker 3: mean I get home at night, I put on my
- 0:49Speaker 3: I put YouTube TV on and I kind of like
- 0:52Speaker 3: watch the stuff that I like to watch and let
- 0:55Speaker 3: my brain rest. That's like, you know, Cincinnati Bengals and
- 1:00Speaker 3: doing the draft and free agency, you know, Kansas City
- 1:04Speaker 3: Royal spring training.
- 1:06Speaker 2: You know, maybe maybe you know what's going on in
- 1:09Speaker 2: the world. News Independent News you know, so things like that.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I try to avoid listening to the talking heads because
- 1:15Speaker 3: they're just they're first of all, they're they're wrong so
- 1:18Speaker 3: much because they're not because they don't know anything. It's
- 1:21Speaker 3: because they're they're in a situation where they're constantly commenting
- 1:25Speaker 3: on things that they probably aren't experts in.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So I think that just puts them in a tough spot.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean it's it's uh, you know, for us,
- 1:36Speaker 3: we were able to not turn the ball over, you know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: bring a top ten defense, uh and do the job
- 1:42Speaker 3: on the backboard. And I think we made some adjustments
- 1:45Speaker 3: to the first uh you know, game plan, particularly defensively
- 1:50Speaker 3: that I think we went into the first game, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 3: with with with a with a worse plan than we
- 1:56Speaker 3: did the second time.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna mention Dylan Mitchell.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Uh he he kind of was a catalyst early in
- 2:01Speaker 1: that game at the Garden, but held to no points
- 2:04Speaker 1: in the second game. So what changed there for you
- 2:07Speaker 1: defensively because that guy was a major factor in New York.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you know, things like, you know, everything
- 2:15Speaker 3: went wrong for them, everything went right for us. You know,
- 2:18Speaker 3: like they're just you know, they they had a bad night.
- 2:21Speaker 3: We had a we had a pretty good night because
- 2:25Speaker 3: we didn't even shoot well. I mean we shot and
- 2:27Speaker 3: we had a lot of open shots. I mean, we
- 2:28Speaker 3: missed a bunch of open threes that like I.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Mean we we had.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I mean, we probably should have scored in the eighties
- 2:35Speaker 3: in that game with the with the looks we had
- 2:37Speaker 3: from three. So I would say that we did a
- 2:41Speaker 3: better job of a pickup point with him, Like I know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: he's obviously he's not a shooter. He's a guy that
- 2:47Speaker 3: wants to drive it, slash cut. And I thought we
- 2:50Speaker 3: did a much better job of like fronting him around
- 2:52Speaker 3: the basket, not letting him get catches. And then like
- 2:56Speaker 3: sometimes sort of guy that you know, again isn't a
- 2:58Speaker 3: good shooter. You have a tendance see Tom back off
- 3:01Speaker 3: so much that you know, by the time you know it,
- 3:05Speaker 3: he's at the rim because you've just continued to back
- 3:07Speaker 3: up because you've got this he's not a shooter. So
- 3:10Speaker 3: our pickup point was better. We kept him off the glass,
- 3:13Speaker 3: we kept him from cutting us. And then again, like
- 3:16Speaker 3: I said, they know they had one of those nights
- 3:21Speaker 3: because it wasn't like we were lights out, you know,
- 3:23Speaker 3: like we didn't even have a good shooting night.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, had a good defensive day though they went over
- 3:28Speaker 1: twenty four.
- 3:29Speaker 4: That one got everyone attention.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I don't think have you ever been around in a
- 3:33Speaker 1: game where someone your opponent went over twenty four or
- 3:36Speaker 1: you were.
- 3:36Speaker 3: A team I would say when you're like, well, even
- 3:39Speaker 3: going back to that Illinois game with that thirty ozho run,
- 3:43Speaker 3: you don't know, you like, you don't realize what's going
- 3:47Speaker 3: on until after the game when people ask you about it.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You know, like, I know, you know you felt like
- 3:52Speaker 3: they were Yeah, they were missing a lot of shots,
- 3:56Speaker 3: and but you have no idea that the what that
- 4:01Speaker 3: looked like for them until really the press conference. I
- 4:06Speaker 3: don't even think that any of the coaches said anything
- 4:09Speaker 3: in the locker room in the post game, Hey, you
- 4:11Speaker 3: realize they missed, you know, the last twenty four shots.
- 4:14Speaker 3: So you just you're not aware of it. You know
- 4:17Speaker 3: that they're struggling to score, you just don't know to
- 4:20Speaker 3: what extent.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Right, One final note on the bench and Eric Raber too,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he bounced back against Seaton all he helped you some
- 4:29Speaker 1: in the minutes he played. And you know Malachi Smith
- 4:32Speaker 1: is I think sparks some things for you. And of
- 4:36Speaker 1: course Jayden Ross I I'm really impressed with him. He
- 4:39Speaker 1: comes in, he gets his fifteen to twenty minutes, he
- 4:42Speaker 1: does stuff. And Jaln Stewart hasn't been able to play
- 4:45Speaker 1: these last two games. Can you address that? Will he
- 4:48Speaker 1: be able to get back on the floor do you
- 4:50Speaker 1: think for Markeditt or beyond?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, if he doesn't have setbacks, I mean he's got
- 4:56Speaker 3: a real shot for the weekend to just progress through
- 5:01Speaker 3: the week if as long as we don't have setbacks,
- 5:02Speaker 3: so we'll keep our fingers crossed, they'll say a prayer
- 5:05Speaker 3: for that. But yeah, I mean we need the bench.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I mean the bench. I mean I'm you know, I
- 5:13Speaker 3: I again, it's this, you know, we come out of
- 5:15Speaker 3: the Villanova game, and I you know, I think leadership
- 5:18Speaker 3: a lot of times is is taking the blame for
- 5:21Speaker 3: things maybe when you're not necessarily believing that what you're saying.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So I coming out of the Villanova.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Game, you know, I throw myself, uh you know to that, Hey,
- 5:32Speaker 3: I've got to play and trust the bench more. But
- 5:35Speaker 3: you know, like when you're at this time of year
- 5:37Speaker 3: where you're playing for championships, you know, when the guys
- 5:39Speaker 3: off the bench come into the game. You know, they
- 5:42Speaker 3: you know, if you're Eric, you know you've got to
- 5:45Speaker 3: be you know, good in ball screen defense. You know,
- 5:49Speaker 3: you've got to be able to rebound both backboards and
- 5:52Speaker 3: then obviously due to things that come natural to him
- 5:54Speaker 3: on offense. You know, Malachi as a you know guy
- 5:57Speaker 3: that we need to be as good as Asandi Art
- 6:00Speaker 3: was as a junior. You know, he's got to come
- 6:03Speaker 3: through and and and and make plays while he's on
- 6:06Speaker 3: the court so that uh, you know where you're not
- 6:10Speaker 3: kind of squirming as a coach and looking do we
- 6:12Speaker 3: get Silas back? You know, I mean, I think Malachi
- 6:16Speaker 3: is so important as we come into march here. But
- 6:19Speaker 3: like when you go in the game and you come
- 6:21Speaker 3: in off the bench, you can't go defensive mistake, turn
- 6:25Speaker 3: the ball over, mistake on defense when you're coming off
- 6:29Speaker 3: the bench. It's just a life of a bench player,
- 6:32Speaker 3: you know. So we need these guys to come in,
- 6:35Speaker 3: you know, make a positive impact like they did against
- 6:37Speaker 3: Villanova or like they did against Saint John's a couple
- 6:42Speaker 3: of these guys so that we could play them more. Yeah,
- 6:44Speaker 3: it's important, but if you come in, But if you
- 6:46Speaker 3: come in the game off the bench, and you start
- 6:49Speaker 3: playing bad and having a negative effect on the team,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you're probably not going to stay in the court that long.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it makes sense.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And then and then Mike, then it makes you a
- 7:01Speaker 3: little bit nervous about going to them in the next situation,
- 7:05Speaker 3: unless there's a foul situation. So you know that that's
- 7:08Speaker 3: the that's the part about being a bench player that
- 7:11Speaker 3: you got to you got to bring it when you
- 7:12Speaker 3: get in there.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Yeah, it takes a certain mentality. And no question.
- 7:15Speaker 1: A couple of things you said recently, I wanted to
- 7:17Speaker 1: see if you could maybe not explain them, but clarify.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You were in one of the huddles, and of course
- 7:25Speaker 1: we you know, we have TV fees and stuff. You
- 7:27Speaker 1: were one of the huddles and you were emphasizing to
- 7:29Speaker 1: your team, don't let your teammates down. And I hadn't
- 7:33Speaker 1: heard that before. You know, if you on on a
- 7:36Speaker 1: in a in a in the battle basically, and it
- 7:39Speaker 1: seemed to strike a chord to me for guys like
- 7:43Speaker 1: Arris Reid.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You know, people who are really.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Responsible guys and and they want to do the best
- 7:48Speaker 1: thing for their teammates they can. But when you're telling them,
- 7:51Speaker 1: don't let your teammate down. Really, I thought was a
- 7:55Speaker 1: good message.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's the best way that players are
- 7:59Speaker 3: going to respond. I mean, I don't know, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 3: the relationships that you have with your brothers in that
- 8:05Speaker 3: locker room, those are the people that you're on the
- 8:08Speaker 3: court fighting for, fighting with. I mean, you know, I
- 8:13Speaker 3: think the players, you know, you develop a relationship with
- 8:16Speaker 3: your coaches and your coaching staff. But I think that uh,
- 8:20Speaker 3: you know, the the best teams, they don't want to
- 8:23Speaker 3: let each other down as brothers. They know the work
- 8:25Speaker 3: that they've put in together. They know that you don't
- 8:28Speaker 3: get many chances in life to win championships or to
- 8:31Speaker 3: do special things on a team, and you want to
- 8:35Speaker 3: enjoy those experiences together. And you know, if you're if
- 8:40Speaker 3: you're the weak link for us on defense and or
- 8:43Speaker 3: you're the you know, you're the center that is unfocused
- 8:47Speaker 3: and doesn't protect the rim and doesn't finish, or if
- 8:51Speaker 3: you're the you know, the guard that turns the ball
- 8:53Speaker 3: over and doesn't play defense and doesn't make winning plays,
- 8:57Speaker 3: and you just don't want to be the person that
- 9:00Speaker 3: lets the group down or at least or at least
- 9:02Speaker 3: a human being with a conscience and somebody that's about
- 9:07Speaker 3: the right things, that's a winner. You're not gonna want
- 9:09Speaker 3: to be the one that lets the group down if
- 9:11Speaker 3: you have any heart whatsoever. And I think that that's
- 9:14Speaker 3: what really comes down to for us, is like we've
- 9:16Speaker 3: got guys that you know that that either you know,
- 9:21Speaker 3: whose defense at times have hurt us.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Their focus at times has hurt us.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Their lack of ball security at times has hurt this team,
- 9:30Speaker 3: and it makes us vulnerable.
- 9:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I think that the team actually has a high ceiling
- 9:34Speaker 3: and the floor is actually what scares me about this
- 9:37Speaker 3: group because we've proven that we could beat the best teams.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I mean, everyone's talking about how great Florida is this year,
- 9:44Speaker 3: but you know, we beat them earlier in the year.
- 9:49Speaker 3: What scares me the most about this team is actually
- 9:51Speaker 3: the floor because we've shown against you know, opponents that
- 9:56Speaker 3: aren't the best, that we could lose or lose.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Right, anybody could.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'm just going to leave you this.
- 10:06Speaker 4: You said the other day, this team has a will
- 10:08Speaker 4: to win. Put that on a T shirt. It's okay
- 10:10Speaker 4: with me.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I like that, Yeah, I mean, I listen, it's for us.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I mean at these games are all tough. There's so
- 10:17Speaker 3: much balance in college basketball, so many good teams, and again,
- 10:21Speaker 3: conference play is tough. Twenty seven to three is really
- 10:24Speaker 3: hard to do. You know, it's hard to do. I
- 10:28Speaker 3: give the team a lot of credit, but you want
- 10:30Speaker 3: to go into this time of year feeling like your bulletproof.
- 10:33Speaker 3: You know, like your defense is elite, your offense is elite,
- 10:36Speaker 3: You're a top rebounding team, you take care of the ball,
- 10:39Speaker 3: your depth is there.
- 10:41Speaker 2: That's the only way that you're sleeping well this time
- 10:44Speaker 2: of year.
- 10:44Speaker 3: And you know, we haven't been quite that, but we've
- 10:47Speaker 3: been really good at winning yep.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And there's still time to prove even more winning is
- 10:53Speaker 1: on the way.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Thanks to Dan.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Hurley, Alex Caraban coming up, and just a moment, we'll
- 10:57Speaker 1: check in with Ak and find out where he's at
- 11:01Speaker 1: after Senior Day. All that coming up as we continue
- 11:04Speaker 1: on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan Hurley
- 11:08Speaker 1: on Liarfield
