- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial Worlds.
- 0:17Welcome to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19All right, I had so much amazing feedback from you guys yesterday
- 0:23when I asked if you wanted a content recap segment of this
- 0:27podcast or like how I should integrate content into it.
- 0:30If you guys wanted me to talk about baby reindeer, Everyone
- 0:33wants me to talk about baby reindeer, which is fair enough
- 0:36because I cannot stop thinking about it and consuming content
- 0:39about it. So what I have decided to do, I
- 0:42am going to do an episode. My Friday episode will be about
- 0:45baby reindeer. So it will be like a recap
- 0:48breakdown. We had done some of those
- 0:51podcasts in the past like breaking down a docu series or
- 0:55whatever. So I'm going to do that on
- 0:58Friday for you guys as the Friday episode.
- 1:00So this is your like 48 hour warning.
- 1:03You need to watch Baby Reindeer if you want to listen to
- 1:06Friday's episode. There will obviously be so many
- 1:09spoilers, but trigger warning, it is a very dark series.
- 1:13It starts off kind of like light and you're kind of like, OK,
- 1:16this is a pretty good show. And then it just gets darker and
- 1:19darker. So I would say maybe Google it,
- 1:23just quickly, try not to get any spoilers, but just like see what
- 1:25the content matter is, if you can handle it.
- 1:28But if you guys think you can and you're interested, watch it
- 1:31all by Friday, 'cause that will be my episode on Friday and I'm
- 1:35interested to see how I go with this new format.
- 1:38I'm not going to script it as much, which I think also will be
- 1:42a good like reprieve from our typical deep dives.
- 1:45It will still be of course, like a deep dive format, but I
- 1:48haven't done one by myself. I'm actually still considering
- 1:51if I'm going to try and get someone to talk with me about
- 1:54it, but if I do it myself, 'cause I literally have like a
- 1:57day to figure it out, so I probably will be doing it
- 1:59myself. So if I do it myself, then it
- 2:01will be interesting to see. It'll be like a little test and
- 2:04learn for me how long I can talk about a series in this new
- 2:08format by myself. Like I said, I won't make it a
- 2:11scripted, so it'll be kind of like a nice little breakup from
- 2:14the deep dives, which obviously are quite scripted and more like
- 2:18video essay style. I think this will be a good way
- 2:20for me to insert some opinion and just like more banter, just
- 2:23similar to like mini scroll butt with a more structured vibe, you
- 2:29know? OK anyways, let's get into the
- 2:32stories for today and reminder no episode tomorrow as tomorrow
- 2:36is a public holiday. So that is 2 Thursdays in a row
- 2:39with no episode. But don't worry next Thursday
- 2:41we'll be right back. OK, so the first day that I have
- 2:44for you guys is that Tana Mojo has said that all of our
- 2:48favorite influencers are on drugs.
- 2:51So on a new episode of the cancelled podcast, Tanna
- 2:54addressed the accusations flying around on TikTok that
- 2:57influencers at Coachella are all on drugs.
- 2:59So if you guys are on TikTok and you were following Coachella
- 3:02content, there was actually a lot of commentary about the fact
- 3:04that like under every single influencer video or photo,
- 3:09there's all these people that's just like flooded with comments
- 3:11of people being like, Oh my God, look at their eyes.
- 3:14They're definitely rolling. They're so fucked up, like
- 3:16whatever. And there's been a lot of people
- 3:18that have responded to this, just regular users who are
- 3:21saying like, why are the comment sections like that?
- 3:23Basically, why are we like this? So it's become more like a topic
- 3:27of conversation this year. And then especially with all the
- 3:29Dixie Demilio stuff that I talked about at the beginning of
- 3:32the week where users were also accusing her of, you know, being
- 3:35on drugs on live stream and all of that.
- 3:37So there's just a lot of conversation right now about
- 3:40like influencers doing drugs and Tana has something to say.
- 3:44So Tana, who is the person that I truly would trust the most to
- 3:50tell us about partying and influencer culture?
- 3:53She says, quote, your favorite influencers are on so many
- 3:57drugs, she said, quote. And like, not one of them, all
- 4:01of them, every single person that I saw as in referring to
- 4:04Coachella, she saw at Coachella like PG, like they were on
- 4:08TikTok with like the biggest brands in these fucking houses.
- 4:11I saw four hours after they were posting like their PC brand deal
- 4:14with their jaw on the motherfucking floor.
- 4:18I'm dead. I mean, I don't see how that is
- 4:22so different than like everybody else that's at Coachella who's
- 4:25around that age. You know, so many of the
- 4:26influencers that we follow and the ones that she's referring to
- 4:30would be in their like early 20s to mid 20s.
- 4:33And that is if you're going to a music festival like your party
- 4:36stage. So I don't see it as so
- 4:37different from the other people that are that age who are at
- 4:41Coachella. And you know, a lot of these
- 4:42influencers when they get famous really young, they don't end up
- 4:45going to college and things like that.
- 4:46And like those are the years where you're like having fun and
- 4:49experimenting, at least for a lot of people.
- 4:50So I don't think that's that wild to say.
- 4:53And I think influencer culture, it's like celebrity culture,
- 4:56right? Like we know that celebrities
- 4:58get like free drugs and their parties are crazy and all of
- 5:01this stuff. And I assume it would be so
- 5:02similar for influencers. Even for me, working in media,
- 5:06running a media company, but even before I ran the company,
- 5:08like just working as a writer in media, going to events
- 5:12constantly, you know, I used to joke about with some of the
- 5:16girls that I knew, like we could be drunk every single day of the
- 5:19week for free if we wanted to be.
- 5:20It's just free flowing everywhere when you're in that
- 5:23industry. So I just think like, it's not
- 5:26surprising to me at all that it's easy to get swept up in
- 5:30that lifestyle. It's easy to say yes when you
- 5:33are surrounded by so much of it as well.
- 5:35So that doesn't surprise me at all.
- 5:37And you know, I trust everything that Tana Mojo says when it
- 5:39comes to influencer culture and partying.
- 5:41So I'm going to trust that. All right, I have one more story
- 5:45for you guys today. This is a bit of a longer one
- 5:48and it's about some pretty niche TikTok beef, which is kind of
- 5:52like the bread and butter of this podcast.
- 5:54So here we go. OK, so Doctor Michael says
- 5:58that's his handle at Doctor Michael says is feuding with
- 6:01influencer Bell Hassan over SPF claims following a Bondi Sands
- 6:06partnership. So Doctor Michael Says is a
- 6:09physician and a TikTok creator who has built a following of
- 6:12over 400,000 for debunking quote bad health advice that is in his
- 6:18bio. Bal Hassan is an influencer and
- 6:20a former Love Island contestant. She is also the daughter of
- 6:23British actor Tamer Hassan and she has over 450,000 followers
- 6:27on TikTok. So earlier this week, Bal posted
- 6:30a TikTok asking for help finding a natural alternative to
- 6:34sunscreen. She said she went down this
- 6:36rabbit hole of researching SPF. And that, quote, SPF is meant to
- 6:41give you cancer. She said that because we eat so
- 6:45many seed oils, and those seed oils are secreted through your
- 6:49pores as you kind of live your life, the combination of SPF and
- 6:53seed oils on your skin when exposed to the sun is, quote,
- 6:57like a matchstick to cancer. And then she went on to say that
- 7:02she is now completely against sunscreen.
- 7:05So I avoid all content related to like natural sunscreen anti
- 7:10SPF stuff. But I know that it's becoming a
- 7:13more common topic of discussion amongst especially like crunchy
- 7:17moms and like crunchy influencers.
- 7:18And if you followed this podcast for a while, you know that we
- 7:21have covered at length the crunchy to alt right pipeline.
- 7:25So it is very much in that conspiracy theory realm.
- 7:30So Doctor Michael who's like whole thing, like I said, is
- 7:33basically debunking medical misinformation that he sees on
- 7:35TikTok. He responded to Bell's video
- 7:38calling out the misinformation that she was spreading and
- 7:41citing the medical evidence. Quote, there's no evidence that
- 7:44seed oils or sunscreen cause skin cancer, but there's plenty
- 7:47of evidence that UV rays from the sun do, He wrote in a
- 7:49caption. So this first video that he
- 7:51posted was taken down by TikTok twice for misinformation.
- 7:57And he basically says that he thinks it's because Bell was
- 7:59reporting his videos. So Doctor Michael made a follow
- 8:03up explaining that TikTok took down his video.
- 8:05And but one of the worst parts of this story actually, in my
- 8:08opinion, is that so Doctor Michael is based in Australia.
- 8:11So it's TikTok Australia that took his video down.
- 8:15For anyone that doesn't know, I have lived in Sydney for eight
- 8:18years. I'm based in Australia as well.
- 8:19And you know, if you've lived in Australia, you would know this
- 8:22too. This son is so strong here.
- 8:25It's like so much stronger than so many other countries in the
- 8:27world. So like sun safety, SPF, it's
- 8:31such, it's so important here, but it's like also such a big
- 8:33topic of conversation. It's like culturally such a big
- 8:36thing here. So the fact that TikTok
- 8:38Australia specifically was the one striking his videos and
- 8:43taking it down when he is basically trying to tell people
- 8:46to wear Spfi just think is honestly one of the worst parts
- 8:49of this story. This ignited basically a back
- 8:52and forth between the two of them.
- 8:54Bell has posted some videos saying that Doctor Michael's
- 8:56videos have caused her to get abused on TikTok and a lot of
- 8:59harassment, which I absolutely believe because that's just how
- 9:02TikTok works unfortunately. She also called him
- 9:06unprofessional and a hypocrite in one video she wrote in her
- 9:09caption. Quote you guys keep backing some
- 9:11guy who likes to insult people instead of educate and beg all
- 9:14of you to follow and share and like his content.
- 9:17But of course no, he's not doing it for views.
- 9:19God no, he's doing it for the greater good.
- 9:21Open your eyes people. Anyways, there has been a lot
- 9:25more, just a lot of back and forth.
- 9:27But then Doctor Michael made a final response showing that Bell
- 9:31had done 2 partnerships with Bondi Sands to promote their SPF
- 9:36range. So one was in 2021 and actually
- 9:39couldn't find where the other one was from.
- 9:41I don't know if it's been taken down.
- 9:42But obviously, like she posted those partnerships before she
- 9:45did her own research, quote UN quote and decided she's against
- 9:48sunscreen. But that was I guess his final
- 9:51response to saying like, she's calling me a hypocrite.
- 9:54Let's take a look at this. So there is a lot that could be
- 9:57said absolutely about doctors and dermatologists and you know,
- 10:01people in the healthcare profession and how they go about
- 10:05trying to educate people on TikTok.
- 10:07I mean, I'm sure that a lot of us can think of different
- 10:09examples where it has not been the nicest response or gone down
- 10:13the best. So I understand that people kind
- 10:16of get their backs up when they hear about like a doctor on
- 10:19TikTok. But in this particular case, for
- 10:22me, the biggest culprit here is TikTok Australia.
- 10:25Belle is going to have her opinion on sunscreen because of
- 10:27the Googling that she did. And if she's not willing to
- 10:31listen to a medical professional about the actually like the
- 10:35evidence and the research about it, OK.
- 10:38But the fact that TikTok has taken down his videos, but her
- 10:41videos are still up and taking them down for misinformation.
- 10:45There needs to be some big overhaul with the moderation
- 10:49going on at TikTok. Like something is very, very
- 10:51wrong there. And that's coming from somebody
- 10:54who TikTok is such a big part of my business and such a big part
- 10:57of this podcast. But things are just not fucking
- 11:00well. Anyways guys, that is it for
- 11:05today. Just a little quick one for you
- 11:06guys. I love you guys.
- 11:08Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 11:10It helps me so much. Please leave a comment, a
- 11:12Spotify comment, whatever. I'm going to be recording the
- 11:17baby reindeer stuff tomorrow. So if you guys have any like
- 11:20suggestions of themes or topics around baby reindeer that you
- 11:25want me to dissect or you want to hear my opinion on also let
- 11:28me know and I will talk to you guys on Friday and then I'll
- 11:31talk to you guys on Monday for mini scroll bye.
