- 0:01>> Man, one thing I do remember is Derek
- 0:04Brown's big butt across from me. Um,
- 0:09>> it was a cool day. Cool day obviously
- 0:10being on the side of the field that I
- 0:12was on. Um, it was,
- 0:15as KB with coach Burns would tell you,
- 0:17it was a a heck of a year for Auburn at
- 0:20that time and a let down going into that
- 0:22game where I think there was two
- 0:24different levels of motivation for two
- 0:26teams at that time. But it was a cool
- 0:28day. I remember that defense was coming.
- 0:30They were there was talent all over that
- 0:32place. All over that defense.
- 0:34>> I remember uh it was Joe Joe Holland.
- 0:38That was the def.
- 0:40Yeah, they were they were uh they were
- 0:42intimidating. We were
- 0:44>> we were ready for them that day, but
- 0:45they uh they were good up front.
- 0:47>> I remember that. That was a cool day.
- 0:49You guys saw us going up against uh
- 0:51Derek Car I mean Derek Brown or um
- 0:54>> Derek Brown
- 0:56>> was a young guy.
- 0:57>> Trying to think who 91 would have been.
- 0:59He was a young guy at the time. Derek I
- 1:01think was a sophomore.
- 1:03>> Um Nick
- 1:04>> Nick
- 1:07freshman I think at the time he was
- 1:09special. We knew or at least we thought
- 1:10going into that game the linebacker 35 a
- 1:14little bit shorter guy he was a heavy
- 1:16hitter. Um, I can't remember, man. But
- 1:19that was a cool day. Cool day for for
- 1:21where I was and kind of sprung us on to
- 1:2513 more wins after that the following
- 1:26year.
- 1:27>> Do you think you'd be a place like this
- 1:289 years later?
- 1:29>> Man, it's crazy. It's surreal. Um,
- 1:31obviously being around really good
- 1:33people and coach and KB and always KB's
- 1:38always talked about how cool this place
- 1:39was. when we worked together at at
- 1:41Tennessee and then being together this
- 1:44past year at South Florida and he would
- 1:45always talk about this place and how
- 1:47special it was. And be honest with you,
- 1:49it's all happened fast where I say I
- 1:52could imagine being here. Um, I don't
- 1:55know if I would have it would have been
- 1:56this fast, but it's a cool place for
- 1:58sure. I'm excited to be here.
- 2:00>> Yeah, it's got to be got to be something
- 2:02uh really special to have as many folks
- 2:04that you've worked with all coming here
- 2:07at the same time. Yeah, obviously being
- 2:09one having camaraderie of your team from
- 2:11player to player, but being on a staff
- 2:14that's been together, at least on the
- 2:15offensive side of the ball. You know,
- 2:16Coach Gish and I have been together.
- 2:17This will be year year seven, I think.
- 2:20Um, where we've been together, Coach
- 2:23Gordon, our offensive coordinator, we've
- 2:24been together now, this will be year
- 2:25four, um, season four coming together.
- 2:28And then KB and I spent time together at
- 2:31Tennessee, spent time together at South
- 2:32Florida, and now here. So, it's it helps
- 2:35you get started, helps you get get going
- 2:38um kind of get through that even as a
- 2:41staff get through that transition period
- 2:44so much quicker because you're kind of
- 2:45all on the same page. It's been good.
- 2:48So,
- 2:48>> Tyler, you inherited just three guys
- 2:50when you got here, right? What was that
- 2:52like? And what do you think about those
- 2:53those three
- 2:55>> man? Those three kids, I I give them all
- 2:57the credit in the world for sticking
- 2:59sticking through and being here. Um
- 3:01those three specifically, Kale, Tai, and
- 3:04and Jacobe. Um they've been bright
- 3:07bright spots in that room just through
- 3:08these first couple weeks. Um yeah, it's
- 3:12the the unique piece or I want to say I
- 3:15don't want to say the cool piece, but
- 3:16the unique piece I've had some
- 3:17experience of doing this before. When we
- 3:19got to South Florida, the room was in a
- 3:20similar situation where we had to go
- 3:23take a handful of guys out of Porter,
- 3:25sign a big first high school class just
- 3:28like we did here. Um, so way more
- 3:30confident doing it this time around than
- 3:32than the first time. But it's it's a
- 3:36it's a group of of personalities. I
- 3:38think we took took the right approach of
- 3:40trying to go get guys that have played
- 3:43college football before. Um, obviously
- 3:44we're able to bring two guys with us
- 3:46from South Florida that knew our system.
- 3:47One of them being a center that that guy
- 3:50and what we do is uber important. Um,
- 3:52full best. Um, it's been super super
- 3:55easy for our transition. Um, he's been
- 3:57helping the guys in the room. Same with
- 3:59Cole Skinner. Learn it and then going to
- 4:01get a couple other guys that have have
- 4:03played a bunch of college football. Um,
- 4:04and then we had to build it from the
- 4:06bottom up from the depth side of things
- 4:08too where you had to get some add some
- 4:10young guys into that room from uh, you
- 4:12know, freshman sophomore class that I
- 4:13think we got the right guys there and
- 4:15then this freshman class that we brought
- 4:17in the 26 class as talented as as they
- 4:20come. Really excited about all of them.
- 4:22Um, four of them came at the midyear.
- 4:24There'll be one more that comes in May.
- 4:26Um, but
- 4:28I think more I've been in this game and
- 4:31been in what we've done. If you got
- 4:33tough, smart dudes that love football up
- 4:35front, you can you can go win with them.
- 4:37Um, which is what we had at South
- 4:39Florida this past year is may not have
- 4:42had the highest rated recruit or the
- 4:44biggest or the tallest O line, but you
- 4:47had dudes that were tough and smart and
- 4:49love playing for each other. And I think
- 4:52that was a big reason why we were really
- 4:54successful on offense to be honest with
- 4:55you. Coach Gulich and and uh and Joel
- 4:58both have talked about the importance of
- 5:00of the two coals, but especially having
- 5:03your ranker there at center. Just, you
- 5:04know, just talk a little bit about them
- 5:07understanding not just what you're going
- 5:08to do game day, but every all the
- 5:10preparation, everything leading up to
- 5:11it.
- 5:12>> Yeah, I think what we do offensively is
- 5:14unique enough where that position has to
- 5:16be trained. um and the experience he
- 5:20has, it's it's different than most
- 5:22offenses in the sense of how fast we
- 5:24play. But I think having him from the
- 5:28camaraderie he has with the with the
- 5:30other guys that came from the last place
- 5:32and more importantly the camaraderie he
- 5:33has with the quarterback with Byum. Um I
- 5:36think that gives him Byum a hair more
- 5:38confidence that he's got a center there,
- 5:40the guys he's been catching the snap
- 5:41from for the past two years. Um but he's
- 5:44a leader. Cole's a an alpha as they come
- 5:47in terms of he's not afraid to speak up
- 5:49when it's not right, he'll speak up when
- 5:50it is right. He's worked himself into
- 5:53that to be honest with you. When I got
- 5:55to South Florida, Cole Best was a guy
- 5:57that was young in a depth position. Um,
- 6:01never really knew how much he was going
- 6:02to really see the field to be honest
- 6:04with you. And everything he's earned or
- 6:07everything he's gotten he's earned. Um,
- 6:10he's he's a he's a workhorse. But, uh,
- 6:13talking from the strength and
- 6:14conditioning staff to the medical staff,
- 6:16like having him here in a bunch of
- 6:19different facets from how he runs the
- 6:21locker room to how he runs the weight
- 6:22room, it's been a huge help for them
- 6:25even too in the transition of
- 6:26establishing a culture, which talk about
- 6:29all the time in the O line room that not
- 6:31only are we protecting the team,
- 6:33protecting the franchise, protecting the
- 6:34quarterback, we're also setting a
- 6:36culture for the program, right? when
- 6:37things don't go well in a in a game or
- 6:39in a day, they're going to look at this
- 6:40group first. Um, and he believes that.
- 6:43He understands that that he's he's
- 6:45level-headed from a he's high energy,
- 6:47but he's he knows no matter how bad or
- 6:50good it could be going, he's got to be
- 6:51the same guy every day. and establishing
- 6:53that, especially with the young group
- 6:54that we have, those guys being able to
- 6:56see a guy like that, um, day in and day
- 6:59out, just from a cultural standpoint
- 7:01along with being the football player
- 7:02that he is, I think will speak and will
- 7:05help this program for years to come.
- 7:08They got those young guys got the right
- 7:10guy to look up to, which is really
- 7:11rewarding and, um, makes me feel better,
- 7:14makes me sleep better at night that the
- 7:16the guys coming up in the in the ranks
- 7:18will have the right guy to look up to.
- 7:20Tyler, what does that process look like?
- 7:22You you mentioned taking over at USF.
- 7:24You had a similar rebuild along the
- 7:26offensive line. What does spring look
- 7:28like when you have so many new guys?
- 7:30When you have a brand new starting five
- 7:32on the O line, only a couple guys have
- 7:33ever played with each other. You're
- 7:35trying to get everybody in the system, I
- 7:37guess. Just what are what are kind of
- 7:38your overall thoughts on how you get an
- 7:40offensive line group to gel in in spring
- 7:43practice?
- 7:44>> I think you you're trying to figure out
- 7:45what you have to a certain degree.
- 7:47Obviously, us evaluating and being super
- 7:49thorough in our evaluation process in
- 7:50the portal and the high school ranks of
- 7:52what you think you have. Um, but I don't
- 7:56think you truly know until you get to go
- 7:57see those guys do the stuff that you do,
- 7:59right? um figuring out what exactly to
- 8:02the finite detail what they're good at,
- 8:04what their strengths are, what their
- 8:05weaknesses are, and trying to continue
- 8:06to build the offense around them um is
- 8:09really what I believe this offseason,
- 8:11spring, summer is about, where you can
- 8:13hopefully have have your identity
- 8:15figured out before you ever get to
- 8:16training camp, especially up front. Um,
- 8:19not saying that every job's going to be
- 8:21penciled in or by that point, but um, at
- 8:24least have a good understanding of what
- 8:26what your strengths and weaknesses are
- 8:28in the in the O line room from a from a
- 8:30skill set standpoint.
- 8:31>> What did you guys see particularly out
- 8:33of those two tackles? I you added more
- 8:35than just those two guys, but kind of
- 8:37the the flashier ones, Joe Simmons from
- 8:39from James Madison and Stanton Raml from
- 8:41Michigan State. What made those kind of
- 8:43the the bookends that y'all wanted to go
- 8:45after pretty early on in the portal
- 8:47process? Yeah. So Stanton um recruited
- 8:50the hell out of him when I was at
- 8:52Tennessee. Um Coach Golish was a big
- 8:54part of that too. So we had familiarity
- 8:56with the family. We actually were
- 8:58signing his little brother at South
- 9:00Florida as a Dlineman. So kept in touch
- 9:02with the family a bunch and just always
- 9:04checked in on how Stanton was doing and
- 9:05I knew um when he hit the portal that
- 9:08being closer to home was something that
- 9:10I think he wanted and he wanted to to
- 9:13play in the SEC. He wanted to play in
- 9:15the best of the best. Um, you know, he's
- 9:17got his years are numbered with how many
- 9:20he's got left and he uh he wants to go I
- 9:23think prove to himself more than anybody
- 9:24that he could go do it at this level.
- 9:26Um, and I just from what I saw in him,
- 9:28he's uber athletic. He's polished in a
- 9:31lot of ways from just feeling natural
- 9:32movements as an O lineman. He plays
- 9:34hard. Um, you talk about one thing we
- 9:36look forward is dudes that play hard and
- 9:38are tough. That's him. Um, from a skill
- 9:41set standpoint. And then Big Joe, um, a
- 9:44guy that came on later on in his career.
- 9:46You know, Stanton started early on in
- 9:48his career. Was his captain as a
- 9:49sophomore. Joe really this past year,
- 9:52James Madison is when he really got his
- 9:54fair share of being the main guy at
- 9:56tackle. Um, and seeing him compete
- 9:58against like opponents that you'll play
- 10:00in this league was impressive. Um, he is
- 10:03big as as they come. um athletic, got
- 10:07great length up top, which some of those
- 10:09traits that we look for from a body
- 10:11standpoint at tackle he has. Um but same
- 10:14thing, the thing that hopped off the
- 10:16chart or hopped off the tape at me the
- 10:18most watching him was how hard he
- 10:19played. Whether it was good, bad, or
- 10:21ugly, he was playing through the wick of
- 10:22the whistle. He was playing hard, which
- 10:25we're going to pride ourselves on out
- 10:26efforting people in this room. And those
- 10:28two dudes that above anything is that
- 10:30that's what you saw on tape. girl. Think
- 10:32of
