- 0:02- There's a small circle of people who truly
- 0:04- understand what it takes to lead a health
- 0:05- system right now. The decisions are enormous.
- 0:08- The variables are constantly shifting, and the stakes
- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite
- 0:19- leaders are deliberate about where they go to
- 0:21- pressure test their thinking.
- 0:22- Becker's fourteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable
- 0:26- brings together more than 1,500
- 0:28- executive level attendees
- 0:30- and nearly 400 speakers for four days built
- 0:32- around growth, financial sustainability,

- 0:38- have easy answers.

- 0:50- Hi. This is Ella Jeffries reporting live from
- 0:52- Becker's Healthcare twenty twenty six annual meeting. I'm
- 0:55- here with Luis Tavares from Jefferson Health.
- 0:58- Could you please introduce yourself and your role
- 1:00- and the scope of your organization as well
- 1:02- as what's currently commanding most of your attention
- 1:04- as a leader? Sure. And thank you for
- 1:06- having me here today.
- 1:08- Luis Tavares, as you mentioned, and I serve
- 1:10- as the chief digital information officer
- 1:13- for Jefferson Health, but also for Jefferson in
- 1:16- total.
- 1:17- So Jefferson Health is one of the three
- 1:19- business units that we have. One is the
- 1:21- university,
- 1:23- the health plan, and then Jefferson Health. So
- 1:26- it's three separate organizations.
- 1:28- Perfect. And what's currently commanding most of your
- 1:30- attention as a leader?
- 1:32- No. Believe it or not, well over 50%
- 1:34- of my time today is something AI related.
- 1:37- Right?
- 1:38- And it's getting to be more and more.
- 1:41- So that's just the nature of of where
- 1:43- we are.
- 1:44- So lots of different
- 1:46- AI solutions review,
- 1:48- AI governance,
- 1:50- AI implementations that we're going through. So many
- 1:52- in those those AI related things, including cybersecurity
- 1:56- related to AI. Right? Because we can't forget
- 1:57- that. Definitely an important aspect for sure.
- 2:01- Now any year marked by very rapid change,
- 2:03- what recent decision or pivot required the most
- 2:05- leadership conviction from yourself,
- 2:08- particularly when it came to maybe aligning people,
- 2:10- resources, or capabilities?
- 2:13- So I would say we were working with
- 2:15- a potential partner for quite some time on
- 2:18- a partnership.
- 2:19- And as we got further and further along,
- 2:22- we thought that they were the right organization
- 2:24- to be our partner. It was an AI
- 2:26- partner.
- 2:27- And,
- 2:28- I ended up shifting that
- 2:30- and making a different decision,
- 2:32- and I think it was the right one.
- 2:34- But it was a big decision because it's
- 2:35- a big partner,
- 2:37- but we needed to it was more of
- 2:40- a codevelopment
- 2:41- type of arrangement that we were working on.
- 2:43- And I think we have,
- 2:45- really the impetus for speed to value, and
- 2:47- and I didn't wanna go to the code
- 2:49- development because you don't know what's gonna happen
- 2:50- at the end of that. So I went
- 2:52- with a vendor that is really top of
- 2:54- the heap when it comes to that solution
- 2:56- instead of sign a codevelopment agreement with somebody
- 2:59- else. But that was a big decision. Yeah.
- 3:01- Nice. Yeah. No. That makes a lot of
- 3:02- sense. And how did that moment challenge your
- 3:04- assumptions,
- 3:05- and what did it change about how you
- 3:07- approach decision making,
- 3:09- talent, or organizational readiness today?
- 3:12- It it really is
- 3:14- based on what are the drivers. So to
- 3:16- be very clear on the drivers,
- 3:18- we're looking for alternative sources of revenue,
- 3:21- but that's not the main reason why we
- 3:23- have these partnerships.
- 3:25- The main reason is what is the solution
- 3:27- you're bringing to us, How is that gonna
- 3:29- impact our colleagues and, ultimately, our patients and
- 3:32- their families or our students or our health
- 3:34- plan members? Right? So that's gotta be the
- 3:37- focus. It's just going back and reminding yourself,
- 3:40- what's the reason for doing this? What's the
- 3:42- main reason for doing this? And the other
- 3:44- thing is what I mentioned earlier, which is
- 3:45- speed to value. We're looking for value very
- 3:48- quickly,
- 3:49- because of financial conditions and other reasons that
- 3:51- are driving that. And that was a major
- 3:54- a major decision making point that we would
- 3:56- not really focus on as we have these
- 3:58- discussions.
- 3:59- Definitely.
- 4:00- And when you think about the forces reshaping
- 4:02- health care right now, where do you believe
- 4:04- leaders need to be more decisive,
- 4:06- especially when balancing speed, risk, and having the
- 4:09- right teams in place?
- 4:11- I think it's always about people.
- 4:14- So the focus has to be on having
- 4:16- the right team. If you have the right
- 4:18- team, all these other things you mentioned, we
- 4:20- can deal with. But you gotta make sure
- 4:22- you have the right team. Because if you
- 4:23- don't, you're gonna end up wasting a lot
- 4:26- of time, wasting a lot of effort, and
- 4:28- with people that are not gonna not gonna
- 4:30- make it. Definitely. And as a leader, what
- 4:32- components do you look for when making that,
- 4:34- you know, right team as you mentioned?
- 4:37- Really, people that are
- 4:39- dedicated to the mission,
- 4:41- people that are willing to do
- 4:43- two x of what they're expected to do,
- 4:46- people that are willing to
- 4:47- really take people under their wing and create
- 4:51- new leaders for the future because we're not
- 4:53- gonna be here forever. So we have to
- 4:54- make sure that we focus on who's the
- 4:56- next generation of leaders that we're creating. So
- 4:59- those are key key things that we're that
- 5:00- I look for in in the next set
- 5:02- of leaders. Definitely.
- 5:04- And as uncertainty
- 5:06- has become more of the norm, what leadership
- 5:08- habit or mindset has been most critical in
- 5:10- keeping your organization and your people moving forward?
- 5:14- Discipline.
- 5:15- You have to really have a disciplined approach
- 5:17- to what we do today.
- 5:19- For example,
- 5:20- we don't have all the money in the
- 5:22- world just to really invest in every solution
- 5:24- that's out there, whether it's IT or otherwise.
- 5:26- So we have to really be
- 5:28- wise investors
- 5:30- of the dollars that we're steward of.
- 5:32- So that's that's really a major focus. Make
- 5:34- sure that we invest wisely
- 5:36- and that we're doing absolutely the right thing
- 5:39- where we're gonna get the biggest return for
- 5:41- the organization.
- 5:42- And that return is not always financial.
- 5:44- It has other components too. As I mentioned
- 5:46- before, how is it gonna impact the colleagues?
- 5:48- How is it gonna impact our patients? How
- 5:49- can I expect that everybody else that we
- 5:51- serve? Do you have any specific examples of
- 5:53- things that you guys have implemented where you've
- 5:55- seen that positive return that you mentioned?
- 5:58- I would say Ambient Technologies
- 6:01- have been
- 6:02- a major, major factor in the well-being of
- 6:05- our clinicians.
- 6:07- And, again,
- 6:08- it's not about ROI. It's about value, which
- 6:11- a component of value could be ROI, but
- 6:13- it doesn't have to be. So that's a
- 6:15- solution where we invested significant dollars, significant resources,
- 6:18- and we're seeing the benefits. We're reaping the
- 6:20- benefits of that solution when it comes to
- 6:22- our clinicians.
- 6:23- Great. Well, that's great to hear. And, well,
- 6:25- thank you so much for all these insights.
- 6:27- It was great to connect, and thank you
- 6:28- for joining us today on the podcast. Thank
- 6:30- you so much for having me. Appreciate it.
- 6:32- Great.
