Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to a little bonus episode of Unspoken Career
- 0:05Truths. I'm Lauren Levec Gilbert.
- 0:07And I'm Cara Wood. And we're here to be the
- 0:10coworkers you can trust. We had a listener write in and
- 0:15tell us what was going on at her workplace.
- 0:18So thank you, Amy. And we are going to talk about
- 0:21your scenario. Lauren is seeing this for the
- 0:24first time. I'm I I kind of.
- 0:26Like let's. Talk like let's tackle this.
- 0:29So I'm gonna just read the scenario and then we'll we'll
- 0:32talk and hopefully we'll give you some good advice.
- 0:34And if folks have additional advice, please write and share
- 0:38and comment so that Amy gets the collective thoughts from the
- 0:42crowd. So I'm a social media manager
- 0:45for a medium sized company and it's a role that I've held for a
- 0:49year and a half. I like my job and have been and
- 0:52have been growing the size of our following.
- 0:56The company that I work for just got acquired and new management
- 0:59brought in an agency for me to work with on social and
- 1:02according to my boss quote UN quote, grow our following even
- 1:06faster. It's very frustrating for me
- 1:09because now I'm training a team that knows nothing about our
- 1:12brand or audience and I feel like maybe they are just
- 1:15preparing for me to get replaced by this agency that I'm
- 1:18training. It's like my work has doubled.
- 1:21I have to plan what they are going to do and give them
- 1:25strategy and then I have to review what they've done.
- 1:28I am still the one looking over all the performance metrics.
- 1:31I still I still like the company and I like the direction, but
- 1:34should I be looking for a new job?
- 1:37Oh, this is a really good one, especially because I feel like
- 1:43this happens more and more, especially with like companies
- 1:46getting acquired and just in the market that we're in now.
- 1:48So here would be my initial reaction.
- 1:51Amy and car I'd love. I can't wait to hear yours.
- 1:54So my initial reaction is try to change your perspective that
- 1:58this could potentially like supercharge the way that you're
- 2:02doing your work and help you shine and do even more in your
- 2:07role. So I would look at it as you now
- 2:09have a team of however many people in the agency to help you
- 2:13grow the following that you've already really kind of started
- 2:16to grow. It's one of those things where
- 2:19the beginning work is a lot, but it will pay out in the end.
- 2:24But I do think that your caution in terms of what does this mean
- 2:31for my role in my future is not, it is valid.
- 2:34I do think it's valid and I think it's always something to
- 2:37be aware of. But that's also why it's great
- 2:39that you are looking at the performance metrics and you're
- 2:43setting the plan and you're determining like what is
- 2:46happening next and how you are showing up as a brand on social.
- 2:51I think what's always healthy in these scenarios to do is to make
- 2:57sure you're also keeping up with your social and your presence,
- 3:01whether it's on LinkedIn or whatever channel it is that you
- 3:04use to make sure the work that you're doing is getting shared
- 3:08just in case. Because if there is an
- 3:11acquisition, there's usually a lot of change.
- 3:15Nobody really knows what's going to happen.
- 3:17Things are shifting, people are figuring things out.
- 3:20So I would say it's a positive cuz it's supercharging, but
- 3:24you're valid in kind of trying to see what happens next for
- 3:28your role. Yeah.
- 3:30And I, I think Lauren, you and I are aligned in our feedback.
- 3:34Like Amy, we see you, we hear you, you are going through
- 3:37change twofold. Like you've got this acquisition
- 3:40that you're going through and the whole company is and then
- 3:42you've got your role has changed.
- 3:44Like you were making cool content and it was like just you
- 3:46doing it and now you've got other people to navigate.
- 3:49But as Lauren pointed out, this is actually a secret promotion.
- 3:54Like they're not paying you more, but they have just up
- 3:56leveled what you can write on your resume and what you're
- 3:59doing. Because you're managing an
- 4:00agency now and you're probably communicating back to your boss
- 4:04in a way that's a little bit higher level 'cause you have a
- 4:06whole strategy to represent instead of just like the work
- 4:09that you've been doing day and day.
- 4:11So think about it as like a secret promotion.
- 4:15That's not to say if you feel like in your gut that you're a
- 4:18little bit more uncomfortable and you wanna start also looking
- 4:21for a job like do it and know you've got this extra bullet
- 4:23point to add to your resume because congratulations, you
- 4:27just got a secret promotion and it's a lot more work and it's
- 4:30new stuff. So we see you that like that.
- 4:33It's frustrating, but this is a cool potential opportunity for
- 4:36you. Yeah.
- 4:37And I think it's always Cara, that's such an excellent point
- 4:41because working with an agency is also a strategy and a
- 4:45learning experience, right? Like agency work versus being on
- 4:50the other side versus being in tech versus being in brand,
- 4:52whatever industry is really important to understand, like
- 4:55how they go through their briefing process, what their
- 4:57metrics are. So also take this as a huge
- 5:00opportunity to see another side or another industry that you
- 5:03maybe have never experienced before.
- 5:06Maybe you hate it, maybe you love it.
- 5:07Like regardless, it's a new context, it's new people, it's a
- 5:10new experience. And Cara's point about adding
- 5:13that bullet to your resume is also super strong coming from a
- 5:18social media perspective, there's probably a brief that
- 5:20you have to write well. Have you learned a better
- 5:22process for briefing? Can you include AI and how that
- 5:26briefing happens? Can you optimize the way you're
- 5:29working internally with all of your cross functional partners?
- 5:32Like there's a lot of things you can learn from this and you can
- 5:35show that you were able to do in any future job.
- 5:39So I just hope that you can look at it as a shift of perspective
- 5:43that to Carr's point, you got a secret promotion.
- 5:46It's a huge learning opportunity and it's a great resume builder.
- 5:50Yeah. And the last thing I'll add is I
- 5:52got this great advice from management consultant John
- 5:55Metzger when we met in an airport.
- 5:58My company was being acquired at the time and he told me start
- 6:01using we and not US versus them. And so as soon as you can, this
- 6:05new company that's come in as your boss like be on their team.
- 6:08Even if you don't 100% feel like you're on their team, start
- 6:11using like the collective and and at least present yourself as
- 6:16if you're fully on their team so that they want you on their
- 6:19team. That's such a great piece of
- 6:21advice because everybody's figuring it out, right?
- 6:26Like there's a change for everyone and there's a lot of
- 6:28moving parts, but you're all in the collective.
- 6:30So if you can approach it that way, I think everybody will feel
- 6:33included. Thanks everyone, and if you have
- 6:36your own scenario that you want us to comment on, you can reach
