- WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.399 --> 00:00:04.180 I'm glad you enjoyed the chocolate and you enjoyed Christmas, Chris. 2 00:00:04.720 --> 00:00:08.400 Hello and welcome everybody. This is Joe from start up rate dot o, 3 00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:12.000 your startup podcast YouTube blog and Internet radio station 4 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:15.845 from Germany, Bringing you this month in German, Swiss, and 5 00:00:15.845 --> 00:00:19.285 Austrian startups, January 2025. Happy New Year, 6 00:00:19.285 --> 00:00:22.965 Chris. Yeah. Happy New Year. 1 month down. 7 00:00:22.965 --> 00:00:26.645 11th to go. Actually, that that's last time. I 8 00:00:26.645 --> 00:00:30.050 will say this. This year, we are in 2025 9 00:00:30.270 --> 00:00:33.890 now, and, yep, the news are just in time for the Chinese New Year. 10 00:00:34.750 --> 00:00:38.190 Happy New Year of the snake. Welcome to our 11 00:00:38.190 --> 00:00:41.650 regular startup news from the startup and tech entrepreneurship 12 00:00:42.030 --> 00:00:45.865 scene in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Our start ups news 13 00:00:45.925 --> 00:00:48.585 are recorded with Chris in New York City. 14 00:00:50.725 --> 00:00:54.085 Hello. Hello. At the in 15 00:00:54.085 --> 00:00:57.305 Frankfurt, today's news cut is January 27, 16 00:00:58.325 --> 00:01:01.910 2025. As always, all news not 17 00:01:01.910 --> 00:01:05.590 included will be in our next news rep 18 00:01:05.590 --> 00:01:09.130 up. We need to cut our news seriously 19 00:01:09.350 --> 00:01:12.845 so you can have a brief news overview. This time we 20 00:01:12.845 --> 00:01:15.665 sifted through thousands of posts. 21 00:01:16.284 --> 00:01:19.744 Note, our hubs section is gone. 22 00:01:20.045 --> 00:01:23.805 We provide a location with each news piece. 23 00:01:23.805 --> 00:01:27.500 And Chris, you take over the highlights. I actually 24 00:01:27.500 --> 00:01:31.260 do, and there's the siren already. This today. Oh, so so you're 25 00:01:31.260 --> 00:01:34.320 off the hook for a bagel today. Damn it. 26 00:01:35.500 --> 00:01:39.115 So, the start up system across Germany, 27 00:01:39.115 --> 00:01:42.734 Switzerland, and Austria continues to evolve as we 28 00:01:42.795 --> 00:01:45.615 realize every, issue 29 00:01:46.234 --> 00:01:50.075 and, in every broadcast. So, we 30 00:01:50.075 --> 00:01:53.854 also see in early 2025 that opportunities and challenges still 31 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.020 are kind of in balance. 32 00:01:57.680 --> 00:02:01.200 So we see. What are we talking about in terms of the highlights this 33 00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:04.180 month? Notably notably, Berlin's 34 00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:08.195 Zolais has lost its unicorn status amid valuation 35 00:02:08.414 --> 00:02:12.114 woes. A reminder how volatile 36 00:02:12.254 --> 00:02:15.614 the Fintech sector can be. Similarly, the air 37 00:02:15.614 --> 00:02:19.135 mobility pioneer Volocopter, we've talked about them quite a lot in 38 00:02:19.135 --> 00:02:22.050 recent, in recent wrap ups, 39 00:02:23.010 --> 00:02:26.850 has filed for insolvency. Major setback for 40 00:02:26.850 --> 00:02:30.690 the urban air taxi dream that at least 41 00:02:30.690 --> 00:02:34.530 I and you also a little bit used to mock from time to time anyway, 42 00:02:34.530 --> 00:02:38.155 probably. And, but also we see that competitor, Lyddium, 43 00:02:38.695 --> 00:02:42.535 faces delays in their asset transfers. So there's also doubts there on 44 00:02:42.535 --> 00:02:46.295 the viability of the whole emerging market because these are 2 of the 45 00:02:46.295 --> 00:02:50.069 biggest companies there. On the brighter side, though, Switzerland has added a 46 00:02:50.069 --> 00:02:53.909 new unicorn to its roster. Zurich based Signum Bank, a 47 00:02:53.909 --> 00:02:57.609 leader in blockchain banking, reached unicorn status after a 58,000,000 48 00:02:58.069 --> 00:03:01.605 funding round. This highlights the increasing momentum in the 49 00:03:01.605 --> 00:03:05.445 digital assets and fintech sectors, of course. And meanwhile, we see 50 00:03:05.445 --> 00:03:09.125 that the green tech sector across the DACH region, so DACH is the German 51 00:03:09.125 --> 00:03:12.665 word, Deutschland or Osterreich Schweiz for GSA, Germany, Switzerland, 52 00:03:12.725 --> 00:03:16.519 Austria, has made significant strides with €1,200,000,000 53 00:03:17.700 --> 00:03:21.319 in found funding announced. Munich based Green Flexibility 54 00:03:21.540 --> 00:03:25.379 is one of the companies there and secured €400,000,000 for their 55 00:03:25.379 --> 00:03:28.755 battery storage solutions. Dresden Sunfire raised €200,000,000 56 00:03:29.375 --> 00:03:33.135 to advance hydrogen technology, and Berlin's bees and bears 57 00:03:33.135 --> 00:03:36.815 close to €500,000,000 round to expand renewable energy 58 00:03:36.815 --> 00:03:40.655 financing. All these investments underscore the region's leadership 59 00:03:40.655 --> 00:03:42.275 in driving sustainable innovation. 60 00:03:47.040 --> 00:03:50.560 Despite these successes, challenges loom for start ups in high capital 61 00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:54.319 sectors, apart from Volocopter's insolvency and 62 00:03:54.319 --> 00:03:57.924 Solarus' valuation struggle struggles, we see that there are 63 00:03:57.924 --> 00:04:01.364 broader difficulties in attracting and retaining investment amidst 64 00:04:01.364 --> 00:04:05.125 shifting economic climate. However, though, there are, 65 00:04:05.284 --> 00:04:08.584 there's no shortage of ambition as, for example, the Hamburg 66 00:04:08.805 --> 00:04:11.864 based 1 comma Einskommafundf 1.5 67 00:04:12.650 --> 00:04:16.350 pushes forward with a €150,000,000 in pre IPO funding 68 00:04:16.570 --> 00:04:20.330 to accelerate its clean energy ecosystem and 69 00:04:20.330 --> 00:04:23.870 its funding grounds like this that indicate that in general, investors 70 00:04:24.010 --> 00:04:27.745 remain bullish on sustainability driven start ups even as the 71 00:04:27.745 --> 00:04:31.125 broader market probably navigates some turbulences, I guess. 72 00:04:31.825 --> 00:04:35.665 So, yeah, the startup landscape in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria remains one 73 00:04:35.665 --> 00:04:39.345 of contrasts. Innovation thrives in green tech blockchain renewable 74 00:04:39.345 --> 00:04:43.169 energy. There's high risk industries such as urban air mobility facing 75 00:04:43.169 --> 00:04:47.009 mountain headwinds. And, as the market evolves, 76 00:04:47.009 --> 00:04:50.789 both investors and entrepreneurs will need to balance their ambitions 77 00:04:50.849 --> 00:04:54.389 with financial resilience to ensure long term success, 78 00:04:54.449 --> 00:04:57.905 obviously. That's the little highlight 79 00:04:57.905 --> 00:04:59.685 section. But, obviously, please, 80 00:05:01.585 --> 00:05:05.425 don't turn off your podcast app just 81 00:05:05.425 --> 00:05:08.405 now because now let's begin and let's talk Skook Startups. 82 00:05:09.530 --> 00:05:13.289 Yes. A little bit about our schedule. Our schedule will not change 83 00:05:13.289 --> 00:05:17.050 significantly in 20:45. You get at least 3 84 00:05:17.050 --> 00:05:20.895 interviews a month from us with Chris taking over a few more this year. 85 00:05:21.134 --> 00:05:24.895 We wrap up the news at the end of each month. Usually, the episode will 86 00:05:24.895 --> 00:05:28.655 go live on the last Thursday of the month. We 87 00:05:28.655 --> 00:05:32.495 take a news break in July August and come back with our summer start up 88 00:05:32.495 --> 00:05:36.039 news wrap up on Labor Day, maybe in Hawaiian 89 00:05:36.039 --> 00:05:39.880 shirts again. We are not sure yet, if we 90 00:05:39.880 --> 00:05:42.860 post weekly or every other week in July 91 00:05:43.320 --> 00:05:47.145 August. You you can get all 92 00:05:47.305 --> 00:05:49.965 our content directly to your inbox on startupradio.substack.com, 93 00:05:51.865 --> 00:05:55.324 and you can find all our other channels on Linktree, linktr.eeforward/startupradio. 94 00:05:58.664 --> 00:06:02.160 Chris, you promised a little bit more about the top news here. Right? 95 00:06:02.320 --> 00:06:05.920 Yeah. So let's look a bit more in-depth at what I already hinted 96 00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:09.680 at. Let's start with Solaris, Berlin 97 00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:13.300 based company, fintech company, which has significant 98 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:17.254 funding to continue its operations even though they, 99 00:06:17.574 --> 00:06:21.175 also facing challenges with its valuation. As a 100 00:06:21.175 --> 00:06:24.875 provider of embedded finance solutions, Zolaus powers services 101 00:06:25.014 --> 00:06:28.235 such as digital banking, lending, payment system, Floyd's partners, 102 00:06:29.170 --> 00:06:32.850 and partners include start ups, established financial institutions. So it's a real 103 00:06:32.850 --> 00:06:36.530 broad company. Fresh Funding now comes at a critical juncture for 104 00:06:36.530 --> 00:06:39.750 them because they experience valuation pressures 105 00:06:39.890 --> 00:06:43.585 and which basically highlight broader concerns concerns in 106 00:06:43.585 --> 00:06:47.265 the Fintech sector, particularly in the tightening capital 107 00:06:47.265 --> 00:06:50.965 market. So, German press reports that soft SoftBank 108 00:06:51.105 --> 00:06:54.165 International, SBI, is going to invest a €150,000,000 109 00:06:55.380 --> 00:06:58.600 in this round and become the majority stakeholder actually. 110 00:06:58.740 --> 00:07:02.420 So, Solarios has been lauded in the 111 00:07:02.420 --> 00:07:06.260 past for a banking as a service model, but now they 112 00:07:06.260 --> 00:07:09.720 also see that they have to navigate increased competition, regulatory 113 00:07:09.860 --> 00:07:13.595 scrutiny in this year. And, a lot of analysts say that the 114 00:07:13.595 --> 00:07:17.294 new capital now will, be used to primarily 115 00:07:17.435 --> 00:07:20.495 focus on scaling the techno to the technological 116 00:07:20.875 --> 00:07:23.535 infrastructure and compliance frameworks, 117 00:07:24.670 --> 00:07:27.490 making sure that they, still experience 118 00:07:28.110 --> 00:07:31.170 robust growth amidst the market uncertainties. 119 00:07:32.030 --> 00:07:35.470 The company, as companies do, has expressed 120 00:07:35.470 --> 00:07:39.075 optimism, pointing to a strong client portfolio and 121 00:07:39.075 --> 00:07:42.455 consistent revenue streams. However, the question remains 122 00:07:42.595 --> 00:07:46.035 whether they are able to maintain a competitive edge in a 123 00:07:46.035 --> 00:07:49.175 market increasingly dominated by even larger players. 124 00:07:49.794 --> 00:07:53.630 And, so we will see whether Solaris 125 00:07:53.770 --> 00:07:57.130 can also probably become a, harbinger, an 126 00:07:57.130 --> 00:08:00.970 example for, similar companies which 127 00:08:00.970 --> 00:08:03.950 aim to scale sustainably. And, 128 00:08:04.837 --> 00:08:08.645 yeah, more about this can be read, for example, in Handelsblad, 129 00:08:09.104 --> 00:08:12.725 in a German report, and Zolais in and of itself, 130 00:08:12.865 --> 00:08:16.544 I think I said it, is based in Berlin. Moving on 131 00:08:16.544 --> 00:08:19.870 to Einskommafenf, 1com 1 comma 5. 132 00:08:20.890 --> 00:08:24.010 I don't know. Like, this this would be interesting what their English title is, but 133 00:08:24.010 --> 00:08:27.390 Einskommafimfimf just means 1.5. They are based in Hamburg, 134 00:08:28.330 --> 00:08:31.895 and are one of the leaders in clean energy solutions. They've 135 00:08:31.895 --> 00:08:35.575 also secured a €150,000,000 in funding ahead of a 136 00:08:35.575 --> 00:08:39.414 planned IPO. This funding round solidifies their 137 00:08:39.414 --> 00:08:43.195 position as one of Europe's most promising green tech unicorns, 138 00:08:43.255 --> 00:08:46.649 so the general valuation is above 1,000,000,000. The 139 00:08:46.649 --> 00:08:50.329 company focuses on integrating renewable energy systems such 140 00:08:50.329 --> 00:08:53.550 as solar panels, energy storage, electric vehicle, 141 00:08:54.329 --> 00:08:58.089 charging into residential and commercial infrastructure in order to 142 00:08:58.089 --> 00:09:00.990 create a, seamless and sustainable ecosystem. 143 00:09:02.325 --> 00:09:05.545 They are, willing to use the money 144 00:09:05.925 --> 00:09:09.365 to expand their presence in European markets, invest in 145 00:09:09.365 --> 00:09:12.345 innovative technologies to enhance energy efficiency. 146 00:09:12.805 --> 00:09:16.500 So CEO Philip Schroeder, he used to work for 147 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:19.800 Tesla and was an executive there, has emphasized 148 00:09:20.100 --> 00:09:23.720 the vision of the company to electrify 149 00:09:24.020 --> 00:09:27.860 Europe's energy landscape. I think we speak about this from time to time 150 00:09:27.860 --> 00:09:31.555 here that Europe is really fighting to, put a pin 151 00:09:32.015 --> 00:09:35.155 on the map in terms of being a valid 152 00:09:35.375 --> 00:09:38.815 alternative to, for example, what happens in Silicon 153 00:09:38.815 --> 00:09:42.335 Valley. So the company's approach combines advanced 154 00:09:42.335 --> 00:09:46.080 technology with user friendly interfaces in order to 155 00:09:46.080 --> 00:09:49.920 basically make green and clean energy accessible to broader 156 00:09:49.920 --> 00:09:52.580 audiences or the masses even. And, 157 00:09:53.760 --> 00:09:56.660 they are also banking on the intensifying 158 00:09:57.495 --> 00:10:01.015 green transition goals that we see in the European Union, and 159 00:10:01.015 --> 00:10:04.695 Einscoff really hopes that they are positioned well to play a pivotal role 160 00:10:04.695 --> 00:10:08.455 in achieving carbon neutrality here in the continent or in the European 161 00:10:08.455 --> 00:10:12.019 Union. Investors are closely watching the pre 162 00:10:12.019 --> 00:10:15.620 IPO performance, and analysts suggest that the 163 00:10:15.620 --> 00:10:18.120 valuation could actually surge post IPO. 164 00:10:20.339 --> 00:10:23.860 Worse news come from, I already said it in the highlight section, from 165 00:10:23.860 --> 00:10:27.245 Volocopter, once hailed as probably, like, the 166 00:10:27.245 --> 00:10:30.765 pioneer in air mobility because that company now has filed for 167 00:10:30.765 --> 00:10:34.285 insolvency, marking a really sobering turn for, 168 00:10:34.525 --> 00:10:38.348 the bauxite based startup, but also for the whole industry as a 169 00:10:38.348 --> 00:10:41.812 whole because, Volocopter known for its revolutionary 170 00:10:41.812 --> 00:10:45.275 air taxis designed for urban environments really struggled 171 00:10:45.275 --> 00:10:48.738 with, mounting financial challenges. They had 172 00:10:48.738 --> 00:10:52.202 really high operational costs, slower than expected market 173 00:10:52.202 --> 00:10:55.995 adoption because, I mean, as you can tell, the, flying helicopters are not 174 00:10:55.995 --> 00:10:59.675 around yet. And so the, yeah, the insolvency really 175 00:10:59.675 --> 00:11:02.735 raises general questions about the viability of the whole sector, 176 00:11:03.435 --> 00:11:06.975 especially amid regulatory hurdles and really lukewarm 177 00:11:07.115 --> 00:11:10.709 investor confidence. So, yeah, so 178 00:11:10.709 --> 00:11:14.390 from what we hear on background, we see 179 00:11:14.390 --> 00:11:18.149 that industry experts believe that the concept might have 180 00:11:18.149 --> 00:11:21.915 some potential, but, there's still really, really 181 00:11:21.915 --> 00:11:25.455 big technological and infrastructure challenges that remain unresolved. 182 00:11:28.715 --> 00:11:32.335 The company's leadership has expressed hope that they could probably 183 00:11:32.395 --> 00:11:36.020 restructure and therefore, pave a 184 00:11:36.020 --> 00:11:39.800 way forward, for a renewed focus on its core mission. 185 00:11:40.100 --> 00:11:43.780 But, also competitors like Joby Aviation and Lydium 186 00:11:43.780 --> 00:11:47.445 continue to push forward, signaling a still active market. So we 187 00:11:47.445 --> 00:11:51.125 will see whether Volocopter is only is more 188 00:11:51.125 --> 00:11:54.885 than just like a cautionary tale for start ups in one 189 00:11:54.885 --> 00:11:58.405 of the emerging industries. And they are based in Ose. I think it's in 190 00:11:58.405 --> 00:12:02.165 southwestern Germany. Yes. Not too far away from 191 00:12:02.165 --> 00:12:05.880 us here. Yeah. Green flexibility, 192 00:12:06.260 --> 00:12:09.720 though, on the other hand, it's a Munich based company, has raised €400,000,000 193 00:12:10.420 --> 00:12:14.100 to scale, battery storage solutions. The funding 194 00:12:14.100 --> 00:12:17.785 led by Partners Group aims, in this case, to accelerate the deployment 195 00:12:17.785 --> 00:12:21.245 of large scale storage systems critical for balancing 196 00:12:21.465 --> 00:12:25.225 renewable energy grids. These subsystems, as you may 197 00:12:25.225 --> 00:12:28.445 know, play a pivotal role in ensuring the stability and efficiency 198 00:12:29.190 --> 00:12:32.550 of energy grids that rely on solar and wind 199 00:12:32.550 --> 00:12:36.090 power. Green flexibility plans to 200 00:12:36.150 --> 00:12:39.910 expand their footprint in Europe by building more 201 00:12:39.910 --> 00:12:42.810 advanced storage fix facilities in key markets. 202 00:12:43.665 --> 00:12:47.505 Their CEO, Marcus Lang, has highlighted or Marcus Lang, I guess, 203 00:12:47.505 --> 00:12:50.805 has highlighted the importance of this investment in addressing 204 00:12:51.105 --> 00:12:54.465 Europe's energy challenges amid an increasing adoption of 205 00:12:54.465 --> 00:12:58.070 renewables. As you may know, the, 206 00:12:58.470 --> 00:13:01.910 war in the Ukraine has been a huge issue here in European energy 207 00:13:01.910 --> 00:13:05.589 markets and, I think has been also really great push 208 00:13:05.589 --> 00:13:09.110 for renewable energies here. Battery storage being one of the 209 00:13:09.110 --> 00:13:12.425 essential, like, infrastructure elements of this and, 210 00:13:12.785 --> 00:13:16.545 essential for overcoming the intermittency issues associated with 211 00:13:16.545 --> 00:13:19.285 green energy. And green flexibilities, 212 00:13:20.545 --> 00:13:24.269 offering, which is like a modular scalable system, really 213 00:13:24.269 --> 00:13:28.029 try to meet these demands in that market. So 214 00:13:28.029 --> 00:13:31.709 this funding round positions the company as a leader in the energy 215 00:13:31.709 --> 00:13:35.490 transition movement, and analysts predict further growth as renewable 216 00:13:35.550 --> 00:13:38.535 energy integration intensifies. 217 00:13:40.675 --> 00:13:43.255 2 more to go. 3 more to go. Good lord. 218 00:13:45.795 --> 00:13:49.575 Sunfire, company based in Dresden. 219 00:13:49.715 --> 00:13:53.520 They have secured €200,000,000 to expand 220 00:13:53.580 --> 00:13:57.260 hydrogen technology solutions. The, 221 00:13:57.260 --> 00:14:01.040 yeah, green hydrogen also part of Europe's energy future. 222 00:14:01.340 --> 00:14:04.880 Sunfire specializes there in high temperature electroly 223 00:14:05.260 --> 00:14:08.524 electrolysis. Is that how you pronounce it in English? Electrolyse, 224 00:14:08.904 --> 00:14:12.125 as we say in German, which efficiently 225 00:14:12.264 --> 00:14:15.785 efficiently converts water into hydrogen using renewable 226 00:14:15.785 --> 00:14:19.464 energy sources. So the founding round this time around led by several global 227 00:14:19.464 --> 00:14:22.990 investors is going to support scaling its production capabilities 228 00:14:23.450 --> 00:14:27.050 and enhancing r and d efforts. Hydrogen is seen as a 229 00:14:27.050 --> 00:14:30.110 cornerstone for decarbonizing industries 230 00:14:30.410 --> 00:14:33.870 such as steel production, chemicals, and heavy transport 231 00:14:34.225 --> 00:14:37.985 to heavy transport. And Sunfire's technology there 232 00:14:37.985 --> 00:14:41.745 addresses these demands, trying to provide a cleaner and more 233 00:14:41.745 --> 00:14:45.265 scalable solution. CEO Niels Aldag said that the 234 00:14:45.265 --> 00:14:48.829 company is focused on meeting Europe's ambitious hydrogen targets 235 00:14:49.209 --> 00:14:52.829 while also eyeing other international markets. 236 00:14:53.690 --> 00:14:57.130 They really hope that since governments are increasing their commitments to 237 00:14:57.130 --> 00:15:00.625 hydrogen strategies, Sanfire is going to be in a 238 00:15:00.625 --> 00:15:04.385 position that is considered to be the technological leader. They hope to become 239 00:15:04.385 --> 00:15:07.904 one of the key players there. And, yeah, one of the few 240 00:15:07.904 --> 00:15:11.640 success stories of, new companies and start up 241 00:15:11.960 --> 00:15:15.800 with a start up culture happening in Eastern Germany since they are 242 00:15:15.800 --> 00:15:16.620 based in Dresden. 243 00:15:21.160 --> 00:15:24.540 Berlin based Bees and Bears has secured €500,000,000 244 00:15:25.715 --> 00:15:29.235 for renewable energy financing across Europe. It's a 245 00:15:29.235 --> 00:15:32.755 fintech that focuses on providing credit solutions for renewable 246 00:15:32.755 --> 00:15:36.115 energy projects so that businesses and households can 247 00:15:36.115 --> 00:15:39.575 adopt solar panels, wind turbines, other sustainable technologies. 248 00:15:41.540 --> 00:15:45.220 It's a funding that for them marks a significant milestone to 249 00:15:45.220 --> 00:15:48.760 expand its platform's reach, facilitate investments 250 00:15:48.980 --> 00:15:52.740 in over 25,000 renewable energy projects across Germany 251 00:15:52.740 --> 00:15:56.265 and beyond. CEO, Anne Lehmann, noted that the 252 00:15:56.265 --> 00:15:59.165 company's mission aligns with the EU's green deal objectives, 253 00:15:59.625 --> 00:16:03.325 again, going back to be carbon neutral and making financing 254 00:16:03.625 --> 00:16:07.310 for, sustainability more accessible. Biese and Baers also 255 00:16:07.310 --> 00:16:10.990 hinted at integrating AI to optimize credit allocation and 256 00:16:10.990 --> 00:16:13.890 risk management. The, Fintech's 257 00:16:14.510 --> 00:16:18.075 approach is expected to accelerate the green transition in 258 00:16:18.315 --> 00:16:21.935 Germany and Europe while delivering strong returns for investors. 259 00:16:22.875 --> 00:16:25.855 So a company that is really interesting on several 260 00:16:26.395 --> 00:16:29.915 fronts here because they seem to be not only an 261 00:16:29.915 --> 00:16:33.600 interesting Fintech company, but also one that is working for a 262 00:16:33.600 --> 00:16:37.300 specific sector that has good, chances to prosper. 263 00:16:37.760 --> 00:16:40.740 Beez n Bears is the name based in Berlin. 264 00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:46.045 Signum, achieves unicorn status with 265 00:16:46.045 --> 00:16:49.565 a €58,000,000 growth round. As I said, it's 266 00:16:49.565 --> 00:16:53.325 Switzerland based, Zurich to be precise. The, bank 267 00:16:53.325 --> 00:16:56.865 is a pioneer in digital asset banking and offers 268 00:16:57.069 --> 00:17:00.610 solutions in blockchain based services, including tokenization, 269 00:17:01.470 --> 00:17:05.069 crypto trading, and custody services. They will 270 00:17:05.069 --> 00:17:08.510 use the money to support the bank's expansion into new markets, 271 00:17:08.510 --> 00:17:12.085 particularly Asia and Europe. Matthias Imbach is one of the cofounders 272 00:17:12.224 --> 00:17:15.524 here, and he said that the company's commitment to bridging 273 00:17:15.825 --> 00:17:19.664 traditional banking with blockchain technology, creating new opportunities 274 00:17:19.664 --> 00:17:23.424 for institutional investors are really the goals that they want 275 00:17:23.424 --> 00:17:27.180 to achieve with that kind of money. And, yeah, we see it in the company's 276 00:17:27.180 --> 00:17:30.860 growth already that the, increasing institutional adoption of 277 00:17:30.860 --> 00:17:34.620 blockchain and technology and digital assets here actually 278 00:17:34.620 --> 00:17:38.105 seems to work. And that analysis analysts 279 00:17:38.245 --> 00:17:42.085 predict that Signum's valuation will continue to rise as 280 00:17:42.085 --> 00:17:45.705 regulatory clarity improves and demand for blockchain 281 00:17:45.925 --> 00:17:49.465 services grows even more. 282 00:17:50.240 --> 00:17:54.080 So this is a roundup, and as you can tell, we try to 283 00:17:54.080 --> 00:17:57.920 give you a bit more background than we probably traditionally did to just give 284 00:17:57.920 --> 00:18:01.680 you an idea. And I think, I mean, the summary of this month definitely is 285 00:18:01.680 --> 00:18:04.925 that a lot is happening in the green tech sector here. 286 00:18:05.225 --> 00:18:09.065 And it's probably yeah. As it has always been one of the strengths in the 287 00:18:09.065 --> 00:18:12.745 German market or German Swiss Austrian market to be, 288 00:18:12.745 --> 00:18:16.530 like, the world engineer. Yes. Totally. 289 00:18:17.310 --> 00:18:21.070 Going a little bit into housekeeping and time to brag very 290 00:18:21.390 --> 00:18:24.990 we try to keep it from now on very short to get, kind of get 291 00:18:24.990 --> 00:18:28.750 a balance. Sunpro Radio hits the spotlight twice 292 00:18:28.750 --> 00:18:31.985 in Feedspot's 2025 top 15 293 00:18:32.205 --> 00:18:35.805 stories podcast in Germany. We are mentioned there 294 00:18:35.805 --> 00:18:39.325 twice as startupright.o and woman who 295 00:18:39.325 --> 00:18:43.025 rock GSA. You can learn more on our LinkedIn post 296 00:18:43.320 --> 00:18:47.080 as well as on Feedspot itself. We will be back 299 00:18:55.159 --> 00:18:57.019 after tiny ad break. 300 00:19:00.125 --> 00:19:03.905 Chris, I think I'll hand now over after my very extensive 301 00:19:04.205 --> 00:19:07.885 report for the ecosystem here. What do you think? Yes. 302 00:19:07.885 --> 00:19:11.179 Let me rattle it down. So we start, ecosystem 303 00:19:11.480 --> 00:19:14.840 news, meaning this is everything that affects the, 304 00:19:15.160 --> 00:19:17.980 startup ecosystem. We start with the world news, 305 00:19:20.200 --> 00:19:23.900 from and where we see a, report in Handelsblad 306 00:19:24.120 --> 00:19:27.485 from chatbots to health care, AI startups are seizing 307 00:19:27.485 --> 00:19:29.665 opportunities in a booming $180,000,000,000 308 00:19:31.165 --> 00:19:34.925 market. Question is, is the next unicorn among them? Of course, it 309 00:19:34.925 --> 00:19:38.650 is. So, yeah, AI startups, one of the big stories. 310 00:19:38.650 --> 00:19:42.490 You can read more about that in the, ecosystem news 311 00:19:42.490 --> 00:19:46.250 there. We also see that We may add, Chris, that ecosystem is 312 00:19:46.250 --> 00:19:49.950 this time quite long because we had, like, all the lookbacks 313 00:19:50.135 --> 00:19:53.895 in 2024 and the outlooks for 2025 in there. 314 00:19:53.895 --> 00:19:57.575 Sorry for interrupting. Yeah. The next one actually is a great 315 00:19:57.575 --> 00:20:01.335 example for this because, Crunchbase writes about larger 316 00:20:01.335 --> 00:20:03.995 VC funding rounds that dominated 2024. 317 00:20:05.300 --> 00:20:08.980 We see that despite fewer deals, larger funding rounds characterize the venture 318 00:20:08.980 --> 00:20:10.600 capital landscape in 2024. 319 00:20:13.060 --> 00:20:16.500 AI Crypto Fund predicts Fintech trends for 320 00:20:16.500 --> 00:20:20.025 2025. The latest report from them 321 00:20:20.485 --> 00:20:24.165 is highlighting emerging trends in Fintech from blockchain to AI 322 00:20:24.165 --> 00:20:27.305 applications. More about that in the report on tradingview.com. 323 00:20:28.405 --> 00:20:31.540 Goldman Sachs urges startups to reevaluate 324 00:20:32.160 --> 00:20:35.920 IPO's. David Salomon there, advises startups to rethink 325 00:20:35.920 --> 00:20:39.700 their plans and especially amid fluctuating market conditions. 326 00:20:39.840 --> 00:20:43.200 It's a report on TechCrunch. The same 327 00:20:43.200 --> 00:20:46.924 goes for the venture capitalists increasing 328 00:20:47.005 --> 00:20:50.544 who increasingly target AI startups with transformative potential 329 00:20:51.164 --> 00:20:54.684 across enterprise and consumer applications. So 330 00:20:54.684 --> 00:20:58.250 that is the lookout who which kind of AI 331 00:20:58.250 --> 00:21:01.710 startups are going to dominate the VC focus in 2025. 332 00:21:02.890 --> 00:21:05.790 Moving on from the world to Europe or focusing 333 00:21:07.049 --> 00:21:10.534 focus zooming in, let's say, European startups increasingly 334 00:21:10.995 --> 00:21:14.835 rely on venture debt as a an alternative funding 335 00:21:14.835 --> 00:21:18.294 strategy amidst tighter VC markets rights sifted. 336 00:21:19.154 --> 00:21:22.835 From green tech to AI, these European startups are poised to 337 00:21:22.835 --> 00:21:26.590 dominate in 2025. It's a list of European startups to 338 00:21:26.590 --> 00:21:29.710 watch. And we all wonder if they will, 339 00:21:30.270 --> 00:21:33.810 achieve unicorn status. It's on business insider.de. 340 00:21:34.510 --> 00:21:37.890 So the German equivalent of that or the German daughter company 341 00:21:38.265 --> 00:21:42.025 of that. The European Tech Ecosystem Report offers a 342 00:21:42.025 --> 00:21:45.465 comprehensive review of the region's growth and 343 00:21:45.465 --> 00:21:49.085 innovation trends in 2024 more at tech.eu. 344 00:21:50.899 --> 00:21:54.679 The siftedeu has a list of European Fintech IPO candidates 345 00:21:54.740 --> 00:21:58.419 for 2025. Several of them prepare for public 346 00:21:58.419 --> 00:22:02.039 listing, so let's see which ones are ready to go big. And 347 00:22:02.340 --> 00:22:05.775 we also see that in general though, the investor 348 00:22:05.775 --> 00:22:09.615 confidence takes a hit across the eurozone reaching the lowest levels in over a 349 00:22:09.615 --> 00:22:13.054 year. So eurozone investor morale drops to a record 350 00:22:13.054 --> 00:22:16.895 low. More about that in, report from Reuters, 351 00:22:16.895 --> 00:22:20.730 the Newswire. Same goal not the same goes for 352 00:22:20.730 --> 00:22:24.250 Germany. I'm sorry. The, Ifo Institute, we're always talking about it. The, 353 00:22:24.650 --> 00:22:28.490 German Business Climate Index, basically, to do, like, a 354 00:22:28.490 --> 00:22:32.024 once a month poll 355 00:22:32.024 --> 00:22:34.845 survey about prison business projectives 356 00:22:35.465 --> 00:22:39.245 improved in 2025. So we see that 357 00:22:39.304 --> 00:22:42.985 German economy, German businesses actually are more optimistic in 358 00:22:42.985 --> 00:22:46.679 January than they used to be in December. More from 359 00:22:46.679 --> 00:22:50.279 Germany. Germany's dream of a semiconductor of 360 00:22:50.279 --> 00:22:53.960 semiconductor dominance dims because Intel cuts 361 00:22:53.960 --> 00:22:57.640 back its investment plans. And so, yeah, they 362 00:22:57.640 --> 00:23:01.345 are investing less money in Magdeburg, Germany than they initially 363 00:23:01.645 --> 00:23:05.485 planned. Darmstadt though, kind 364 00:23:05.485 --> 00:23:08.925 of like a hidden, hidden, hidden champion. 1 of the 365 00:23:08.925 --> 00:23:11.970 smaller, cities in the state of Hess, 366 00:23:12.450 --> 00:23:16.210 climbs in Germany's startup rankings and already starts to 367 00:23:16.210 --> 00:23:19.270 challenge traditional hubs like Frankfurt and Berlin. 368 00:23:19.890 --> 00:23:23.510 More about that can be seen in a little report from Hessenschau, 369 00:23:23.809 --> 00:23:26.150 which is the, local news 370 00:23:28.295 --> 00:23:31.835 broadcast of the, Hessen state of Hessen's, 371 00:23:33.175 --> 00:23:36.855 public broadcaster. Hamburg's VC Investments pay 372 00:23:36.855 --> 00:23:40.450 off.
