- 0:01Speaker 1: It's best question of the week. We need that from you.
- 0:05Email US Radio from Helen X ninety six dot com
- 0:08put best question in the subject line it can be
- 0:11about anything, and we've got a simple one today from Brianna.
- 0:17Brianna says, what's the best experience you've ever had in
- 0:21another country? Talking a lot about moving to other countries
- 0:25if your candidate doesn't win in the election, what's your
- 0:29best experience you've had in another country?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Best or perhaps strangers? Sure, I guess the most memorable
- 0:36experience I've ever had in another country is being in
- 0:40in the foothills of Mount Everest at a Buddhist monastery,
- 0:48the monastery at Tembouchet, and having a young monk with
- 0:53a pair of dull scissors cut off all my hair,
- 0:57my long hair. And yeah, that's that's probably the most.
- 1:02Speaker 1: That's pretty good.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I was looking for I was looking for some pictures.
- 1:06I know I have pictures of it somewhere, but it
- 1:09was it was just yeah, it was just surreal. And
- 1:12you did that because why I had very very long hair.
- 1:17I was hiking every day in difficult situations. I got
- 1:22altitude sickness. I was feeling pretty bad. I thought, well,
- 1:26maybe if I do something drastic, it will it will
- 1:31recommit me to this journey?
- 1:34Speaker 1: And is there a religious significance to it having a
- 1:38Buddhist monk do it?
- 1:40Speaker 2: Well? We were at the monastery and surrounded by these
- 1:48these these gentlemen who are who are really fantastic to
- 1:52visit with and to watch and to listen to. And
- 1:55I don't know. I just asked the lama who the
- 1:58guy the headman and at the monastery. I've told the
- 2:03story before, but you know, he spoke. He only spoke
- 2:06to baton Irwa and so we had to go through
- 2:08a translat later and I asked, I said, would you
- 2:11ask him please? We could each get one question. I said,
- 2:13would you ask him how can I best complete my journey?
- 2:16And there was this long exchange between the old man
- 2:18and he was ancient, and the translator and then I
- 2:22mean like it was a two minute exchange between and
- 2:24then he turns to me and said, he says, you
- 2:26have to be strong. I have the feeling that there
- 2:31was a lot of nuance there that the translator, Gelgian
- 2:36said it would take too much to explain it to you,
- 2:38just be strong, And I thought maybe it would help
- 2:40me be strong if sort of do a reverse Samson
- 2:44and cut off all my hair, that's why that haed
- 2:46Oh okay.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So we took Jonesy to Italy when she was six
- 2:51months old, and when we were planning the trip, we're
- 2:55like taking a baby to yeah, do that well, but
- 3:02we were told no, the Italians love babies because nobody
- 3:06there's having babies, so they absolutely adore and everywhere we went, museums, restaurants,
- 3:16everybody there was just so excited.
- 3:18Speaker 2: At seeing that happens. That happens throughout Europe. We took
- 3:22my kid to you were with us carriage, yeah, when
- 3:25he was like a little baby, and people everywhere in Europe, England, France,
- 3:30they disadore them.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But the interesting thing is this is her memory, not mine.
- 3:35She's six months old, remember, and she's in a backpack
- 3:39that Joe carried all over Italy. She has a vivid memory.
- 3:44We are in Siena. She can describe the street, she
- 3:47knows the side of the street we were walking on,
- 3:49she knows what the weather was like. And we saw
- 3:53this art gallery where there's a painting at the very
- 3:58back of the gallery with the life on it that
- 4:00you could see through the front door, and we saw
- 4:02this painting and we said, oh, we want to buy
- 4:04that painting, and we went in about the she she
- 4:07can describe what we were all wearing. She's six months old,
- 4:10six months like it imprinted on.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Her, and she's never seen any pictures of it in adulthood,
- 4:17I mean, as she's gotten older, she's never seen anything
- 4:20photographs that you gotation.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I know what you're getting at. But the things she
- 4:24described are not in the picture, like what the streets were,
- 4:27like what the streets were made out of the She
- 4:31has a very vivid memory, Carrie.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Six months. Yeah, I'm trying to remember my first memory
- 4:40and I want to say, like maybe two anyway, all.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Right me, that's it's about as far as I.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Printed on her. For some for some reason.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I've had so many I can't pick just one. Releasing turtles,
- 4:54baby sea turtles in Mexico, releasing them into the ocean.
- 4:57Speaker 2: That was awesome.
- 4:59Speaker 3: The one of the best, slash worst trips I've ever taken,
- 5:04the one that nearly ended our marriage. Oh yeah, to
- 5:07Paris was as rough as it was, it was also
- 5:10one of the most exhilarating trips. Staying up until you
- 5:14know the sun comes up partying with these Parisians.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You know, it was just wasn't it like a closed
- 5:19down restaurant?
- 5:20Speaker 3: There was there was, Yeah, it it opens. You have
- 5:24to know where it is because there's no sign. And
- 5:27you know, they served the what they call the black chicken.
- 5:30It's very very good chicken, delicious. But I would have
- 5:35to say, I keep flashing back to this memory of
- 5:37this small Italian town up on top of a hill.
- 5:40There are no cars allowed up there, only walking, and
- 5:44they're very proud of their white wines up there. This
- 5:47is also a great segue for Jimmy coming up. They're
- 5:50very proud of their white wines. I remember sitting we
- 5:52found a cafe. Everyone else was running around buying stuff.
- 5:56And so when I sat down and watched this cat
- 6:00for like forty five minutes while we drank our bottle
- 6:02of wine, this cat commanded the street. He just sat
- 6:07in the middle of the street. People are going around him,
- 6:09people with like you know, carts and things going around.
- 6:12He didn't move. He just sat there and just this
- 6:15is he just laid there. I just loved that cat.
- 6:19Never no, just terrific him. Just he owned it that street.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And those people they were his people.
- 6:28Speaker 1: That's it best question of the week. What questions do
- 6:30you have for US email? US radio from how at
- 6:33X ninety six dot com. Put best question in the
- 6:35subject line and maybe we'll answer your question.
- 6:38Speaker 3: No, Andrew, it was not the Korean photo shoot. Those
- 6:41pictures will never be seen again. It's called appropriation. Yeah,
- 6:47because I don't want anyone to see those
