Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey Hurdlers, Emily o badi Here Season seventeen, What's Good
- 0:25Speaker 1: Loved kicking off a new season with Lindsay Horan earlier
- 0:29Speaker 1: this week. If you haven't listened to that episode, I
- 0:32Speaker 1: would encourage you to do so, because there may or
- 0:35Speaker 1: may not be a shoe giveaway in the intro and
- 0:38Speaker 1: you have until if you're listening to this in real
- 0:41Speaker 1: time twelve pm Eastern on Friday, May tenth to enter,
- 0:46Speaker 1: So go on and check out that episode and maybe
- 0:49Speaker 1: you could win a fresh pair of kicks.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But it's five Minute Friday.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And let me tell you, y'all, don't message me about
- 0:57Speaker 1: anything during the season break aside from the fact that
- 0:59Speaker 1: you miss five Minute Friday, and I adore you for that.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I love that you want me to check in, and
- 1:05Speaker 1: it feels good for me to check in too. This
- 1:08Speaker 1: week I want to talk about asking for what you need.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I am entirely guilty of wanting to do everything myself.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I think that is a characteristic that many both women
- 1:21Speaker 1: and entrepreneurs can really relate to. And this week is
- 1:27Speaker 1: kind of the beginning of a crazy time for me
- 1:30Speaker 1: in that I announced and launched a campaign with Birkenstock
- 1:36Speaker 1: on Thursday last night.
- 1:38Speaker 2: It actually the video and the entirety of.
- 1:40Speaker 1: The campaign comes out at the end of the month,
- 1:42Speaker 1: but we had an event for that, and then next
- 1:45Speaker 1: week I'm heading to la and I'm hosting this huge
- 1:48Speaker 1: event for Strava that I'm so excited about. And then
- 1:52Speaker 1: at the end of the month, I'm heading to Denver
- 1:54Speaker 1: to do some more hosting alongside a big climbate athlete
- 2:00Speaker 1: for the debut of her new documentary.
- 2:03Speaker 2: There's a lot going on right and in.
- 2:06Speaker 1: The chaos, I have realized that I need to ask
- 2:11Speaker 1: for help. And it's not necessarily with really large things.
- 2:14Speaker 1: It's something simple like, hey, I could use another twenty
- 2:18Speaker 1: four hours on this deadline, or hey, I could really
- 2:22Speaker 1: use an accountability buddy in the morning. How would you
- 2:24Speaker 1: feel if we went on a run together, knowing that
- 2:27Speaker 1: I want to get in a run, and the two
- 2:30Speaker 1: examples I gave just now there.
- 2:32Speaker 2: It's really small stuff, right.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's not like, hey, I would love it if you
- 2:36Speaker 1: could help me write this speech, or it would mean
- 2:38Speaker 1: a lot to me if you would do Oh my god,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I almost just set a book report for me. But
- 2:43Speaker 1: you get the idea, and I realize that I'm so
- 2:48Speaker 1: worried about being a burden on others. But the reality
- 2:52Speaker 1: is is that you don't know until you try. And
- 2:55Speaker 1: the people that really care about you, you are not
- 2:57Speaker 1: a burden to them. They assume the best in you.
- 3:00Speaker 1: They want to help you, and they wouldn't do so
- 3:03Speaker 1: if they didn't want to. And so I am really
- 3:08Speaker 1: working on this idea lately of asking for help, letting go,
- 3:13Speaker 1: giving up control. Not all that long ago I finally
- 3:17Speaker 1: hired an editor for the show and the bandwidth that
- 3:20Speaker 1: that has given me the opportunity I have now to
- 3:23Speaker 1: focus on the things that I know that I'm truly
- 3:26Speaker 1: good at. Not that I wasn't good at editing. I
- 3:28Speaker 1: did it for six plus years of this thing. But
- 3:32Speaker 1: you get what I'm saying. If you relinquish control, if
- 3:36Speaker 1: you ask for help, trust me when I say that
- 3:39Speaker 1: good things will happen for you. It just really is
- 3:43Speaker 1: getting over that initial hurdle. And again, like I just said,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the people that love you, the people that care for you,
- 3:49Speaker 1: they want to show up for you. So enable them
- 3:51Speaker 1: to do that. Enable them to give you a lending
- 3:54Speaker 1: hand when you really need it. My prompt for you
- 3:58Speaker 1: this week, what's something you need help right now with
- 4:01Speaker 1: and who can you ask What is one thing that
- 4:03Speaker 1: you need help with right now? And who can you
- 4:06Speaker 1: ask for help? And now a listener question.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Hey m, I've been seeing on Instagram that you're in
- 4:12Speaker 3: the gym more doing a lot of weightlifting, and I'm
- 4:14Speaker 3: super inspired. So where would you recommend somebody start on
- 4:18Speaker 3: the beginning of their strength training journey.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Just like being a beginner at anything, strength training especially
- 4:25Speaker 1: can feel really intimidating. There's a lot of options from
- 4:28Speaker 1: dumbbells to kettlebells to bar bells. And I know I
- 4:32Speaker 1: remember too what it felt like when I first really
- 4:35Speaker 1: started lifting weights back when oh my gosh, I did
- 4:38Speaker 1: CrossFit like eight or nine years ago. I love where
- 4:42Speaker 1: I'm at right now in my strength journey. I have
- 4:44Speaker 1: been lifting a lot more bar bells, getting back into
- 4:47Speaker 1: doing Olympic lifting. And so for someone that is a beginner,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I will say two things. One, it's okay to be
- 4:54Speaker 1: a beginner, and actually it's an opportunity. You only get
- 4:56Speaker 1: to be a beginner once. So harness that excite, do
- 5:00Speaker 1: a little bit of a reframe and you will be
- 5:02Speaker 1: able to garner the same excitement that you feel about
- 5:04Speaker 1: other things that you're already doing.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And the second thing is talk to a professional.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I know that not everyone has the capacity to work
- 5:12Speaker 1: one on one with a trainer, but it could be
- 5:15Speaker 1: in your best interest just one time to work with
- 5:18Speaker 1: someone to get down the basics. I want to make
- 5:21Speaker 1: sure that you are living a safe and healthy life.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I want you, if you want to lift weights, to
- 5:27Speaker 1: be able to consistently do it, to get into a
- 5:30Speaker 1: routine and stick with it. So when it comes to
- 5:33Speaker 1: getting down the basement, nailing those movement patterns, making sure
- 5:37Speaker 1: that you're doing things in a safe way, it can
- 5:39Speaker 1: be so so helpful and worthy of the investment to
- 5:42Speaker 1: book one session with a trainer at a gym. Again,
- 5:46Speaker 1: I understand that this is in everybody's cup of tea
- 5:49Speaker 1: or not within your wheelhouse. So with that said, if
- 5:52Speaker 1: you are going to get into this on your own,
- 5:55Speaker 1: start with body weight movements. I'm talking squats, I'm talking
- 6:00Speaker 1: even something like an overhead press. Make sure that you're
- 6:04Speaker 1: getting the movement patterns down before you add loads, so
- 6:07Speaker 1: that you're taking care of your body. You only get
- 6:11Speaker 1: one body. I want to make sure that you're treating
- 6:13Speaker 1: it right. And I said two things. But I'm going
- 6:16Speaker 1: to add one more thing. There are a number of
- 6:18Speaker 1: different plans that you can add in or work with
- 6:21Speaker 1: when it comes to strength training. I myself use the
- 6:23Speaker 1: Future App. I've talked about it so many times here.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm going to link it in the show notes and
- 6:27Speaker 1: you can get fifty percent off your first month. I
- 6:29Speaker 1: love it because I get customized programming that does progress,
- 6:33Speaker 1: so I'm not just doing a bunch of random overhead
- 6:36Speaker 1: presses and biceps curls and tricep dips and whatnot. I
- 6:40Speaker 1: have a program that I'm following that's getting me to
- 6:42Speaker 1: where I want to be and in accordance with my goals.
- 6:46Speaker 1: But if the Future app isn't your thing, there are
- 6:48Speaker 1: so many different plans that you can lean into, whether
- 6:51Speaker 1: they come from Woman's Health Mag, Self Mag, if you're
- 6:53Speaker 1: looking at Peloton, I would encourage you to find something
- 6:57Speaker 1: that makes you excited, channel that excitement into building a
- 7:00Speaker 1: better and stronger you, and trust me again, strength training.
- 7:04Speaker 1: It's something that's really really resonating with me right now.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I love lifting heavy, I love feeling strong in my body,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and I really do want that for everyone. That's it
- 7:15Speaker 1: for this week. Again, don't forget that shoe giveaway. I'm
- 7:18Speaker 1: over at Emily a Body and at Hurdle Podcasts. Another
- 7:21Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
