- 0:00Hi, everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet

- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13Like today, I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of
- 0:17the youth digital media brand Centennial world.
- 0:21Welcome back to mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:23Happy Friday. OK, I'm going to do a shameless
- 0:26plug right now. Please follow me on TikTok and
- 0:29Instagram, specifically on Instagram.
- 0:32I have literally been hovering just above 9200 followers for
- 0:38like, I'm not kidding, four straight years and I'm so close
- 0:41to 10 Ki mean I'm like hundreds off, but you know, like I'm in
- 0:44the 9th 1000 range for years and so many of you guys, I
- 0:48understand like the podcast and stuff like as it's grown, it's
- 0:51not like relevant to my personal life.
- 0:53So I get that it doesn't necessarily translate to
- 0:55followers, but I'm like so many more people listen to this
- 0:57podcast then follow me on Instagram.
- 0:59Please just follow me on Instagram and follow me on
- 1:01TikTok if you guys care about the business updates because I
- 1:03am constantly pumping out unhinged business like growing
- 1:08the podcast, growing the business updates on TikTok.
- 1:11All right, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 1:14So the first three that I have for you guys, this started at
- 1:17the beginning of this week a little bit and I wasn't sure if
- 1:19I was going to cover it, but you know what, we're going there.
- 1:23So this family, specifically a mother, but a family, has gone
- 1:26viral on TikTok for documenting their trip to Disney despite
- 1:30collectively having a stomach bug.
- 1:33So user Hilary Smith went super viral earlier this week after
- 1:36she posted a video admitting that she, her partner and her
- 1:39children still proceeded with her trip to Disney World despite
- 1:42having suspected norovirus. I have never had the norovirus,
- 1:47but I know people who have and it literally apparently feels
- 1:51like death. So she did this video like put a
- 1:53finger down if and told the whole story of basically how
- 1:56they travelled by car, plane and shuttle and then went to the
- 1:59parks while she, her husband and her children seemingly had this
- 2:05virus, this stomach bug which is apparently highly, highly
- 2:07contagious. And the night before you leave
- 2:09to go on this trip, your daughter says she doesn't feel
- 2:12so good. A little bit later she starts
- 2:14throwing up everywhere. And then a few hours later you
- 2:17start throwing up everywhere. After 0 hours of sleep and you
- 2:21decide to make it to Birmingham where your flight leads out of.
- 2:23You're going to make the two hour draft of Birmingham and the
- 2:25next thing you know your seven month old is throwing.
- 2:28Get their security, get to your gate, board this plane.
- 2:31You get strapped in. And at this point, your
- 2:35husband's not doing so well. The reaction on social media has
- 2:38been really bad. People are commenting like
- 2:41imagine paying thousands of dollars for a once in a lifetime
- 2:43trip only to get nobro virus from someone else's kid.
- 2:46Put a finger down if you don't care about other people's
- 2:48health. You can imagine.
- 2:50In response to the backlash, Hillary was actually pretty
- 2:53defensive at first. She was saying like her kids
- 2:55deserve this experience. They planned it for so long and
- 3:00she didn't think it was a problem.
- 3:01Now, there are other people on TikTok saying they were on that
- 3:05plane or they were at Disney at the same time and their kid came
- 3:07down with Nora virus or, you know, got really sick.
- 3:11And and yeah, it's like it has really spiraled.
- 3:14Obviously, there's no way to necessarily Fact Check that.
- 3:17But after getting quite defensive, Hillary did delete
- 3:20her entire account. So you cannot find her on TikTok
- 3:23anymore. But those videos, they are still
- 3:25floating around. Some things just don't need to
- 3:28be shared on the Internet. Like, first of all, that is very
- 3:31selfish, of course. Like I am in a complete
- 3:33agreement with that, but also why do you need to tell the
- 3:37whole Internet a story about how you and your entire family were
- 3:41like shitting for multiple days on end and vomiting at the same
- 3:44time while going on a family vacation?
- 3:46Like that just doesn't need to be shared.
- 3:48The virality from that moment like is never going to be worth
- 3:51it. We don't need to know that.
- 3:52Your employers don't need to know that.
- 3:54Your children's friends don't need to know that.
- 3:56Like too much information. Stop sharing such weird
- 4:00information online. OK, the next story that I have
- 4:04for you guys, I am going to breakdown the 55 K gate as it is
- 4:09being affectionately referred to online.
- 4:12OK, the next story that I have for you guys is I'm going to be
- 4:14breaking down the Rachel Amandi $55,000 salary gate going on.
- 4:20So Rachel Amandi, she's the host of the Cutting Room Floor
- 4:22podcast and they exclusively published on Patreon.
- 4:26They went viral. They've gone viral quite a few
- 4:28times, but they went viral recently for their Marc Jacobs
- 4:31episode, Marc Jacobs, no, Steve Madden, Marc Jacobs Steve Madden
- 4:35episode. And you know, her content, like
- 4:38I said, is behind a paywall. Now Season 6, they went behind a
- 4:41paywall. So they did five seasons of I
- 4:43believe it was just like released as usual as like a
- 4:46normal free podcast. And then season 6, they went
- 4:48behind a paywall and that has been wildly successful for her.
- 4:51And she is really amazing at what she does.
- 4:54But that's Steve Madden interview going viral despite
- 4:57being behind a paywall was like a big moment for the industry I
- 5:00feel. So yes.
- 5:01Anyways, she is quite beloved. Her content is great, however
- 5:06this week she has faced a wave of criticism after she posted a
- 5:09job opening offering a $55,000 salary for a full time in person
- 5:15role in New York City. The position was for like a
- 5:18studio coordinator, but essentially the tasks given that
- 5:22this person would be doing was bookings, administrations,
- 5:25studio coordinator and also personal assistant duties.
- 5:29And the role came with no benefits.
- 5:31The benefits thing is a bit kind of out of my realm.
- 5:34In Australia, you don't get benefits with jobs because that
- 5:38just, it just is built into culture mostly.
- 5:41And in Canada you do get benefits.
- 5:43Like when I was in Canada, I was actually in recruitment in both
- 5:46Canada and Australia. So I do have some knowledge in
- 5:49this space and there are benefit packages, absolutely.
- 5:52But again, it's obviously not as important as it is in the US
- 5:56where there's not universal healthcare.
- 5:58First, you need to know these 4 main things to see if you
- 6:01qualify #1 This is a full time job.
- 6:04This is a full time job. It is every day, Monday through
- 6:07Friday from 9:30 AM until 6:00 PM.
- 6:10Number 2. This job is in New York City.
- 6:13This job is in New York City #3 it is in person and #4 this
- 6:18person needs to start immediately.
- 6:20The job is, we're looking for a studio coordinator.
- 6:24And this job consists of really kind of three main things.
- 6:27Number one, office admin. Think of yourself as like the
- 6:30secretary of the office. You need to have excellent
- 6:33written and verbal communication skills.
- 6:35You need to be a professional emailer.
- 6:37This is a junior role, by the way.
- 6:38This is a junior role, but I think it's a great job.
- 6:41The second part of the job is a bookings coordinator.
- 6:43You will be be helping us book the show.
- 6:45Okay, The third part is a little bit personal assistant.
- 6:48You will be kind of managing a little bit of my personal
- 6:51schedule, but you'll be managing the schedule of the entire
- 6:54office. It was very much framed as a
- 6:55role that is like perfect for someone who wants to get their
- 6:58hands dirty, wants to hustle, wants a foot in the door in this
- 7:01industry. Obviously many commenters were
- 7:04like, this is an adequate salary for New York City.
- 7:07People were saying it's like working three separate jobs.
- 7:09I'm going to say when you are doing an entry level like
- 7:12assistant role, especially in media, I don't think that all of
- 7:17those job descriptions, I, I mean, maybe the maybe the
- 7:19personal assistant side of things is a bit weird, but like
- 7:22bookings, administration, studio coordination, I feel like that
- 7:26can fall under the same job description.
- 7:28I didn't personally see the job as like 3 separate jobs,
- 7:31especially when you're in like a small organization, like a
- 7:33startup, like you wear a million different hats.
- 7:36However, she also wanted somebody with three years of
- 7:39experience for this role. Look, is this compensation that
- 7:42unusual for fashion and media? No, for an entry level job, but
- 7:46I do think requiring someone then to have experience for an
- 7:49entry level job that pays that much, that is also full time in
- 7:53the office, you know, I think that's the biggest difference
- 7:56now is yes, like I'm a millennial.
- 7:57Like we worked the craziest jobs.
- 7:59Like right before I started Centennial, I was making $52,000
- 8:02a year being a full time beauty editor in media, like a full
- 8:06time beauty editor five days a week at the office.
- 8:09OK, so like, I get it, I've done that thing too.
- 8:13But I also think part of owning your own business is that you
- 8:16can make those changes. So even if you can't necessarily
- 8:19pay someone more, because like I get that.
- 8:21I wish I could pay my team so much more than I pay them and it
- 8:25makes me feel so guilty that I can't, you know?
- 8:27But this is just the reality of like building a business and
- 8:30also media in general is like such a tough industry.
- 8:33And so to kind of offset that and give my team better working
- 8:38conditions because they are so valuable to me and I wish I
- 8:41could pay them what they are worth to me and to the business.
- 8:44I try and give as much flexibility as possible.
- 8:46You never need to be in the office five days a week.
- 8:48If someone was on 55K with me, it would be part time.
- 8:52I would be so happy for them to have other stuff going on.
- 8:54They can switch their working days if it makes sense for, you
- 8:57know, freelance gigs that they have or another type of job that
- 9:00they're doing. Not tracking vacation.
- 9:02I literally don't care how much vacation you take.
- 9:04You never need to track it. You don't need to like tell me
- 9:07that you're sick or ask for a sick day, like whatever.
- 9:09Like that is the stuff that I can control as the business
- 9:12owner in terms of the culture that I'm building around the
- 9:15workplace. Even if I cannot pay them as
- 9:18much as I want to pay them, there's kind of this belief that
- 9:21big corporations are often the only ones who are exploitative
- 9:26or have poor working conditions. And that's not totally true
- 9:30because in smaller organizations, you know, there's
- 9:32no HR usually there's like so few processes and exploitation
- 9:38can happen sometimes even easier than it can at big corporations.
- 9:41I'm not saying she was going to exploit this person, but you
- 9:43know what I mean? So in response to the backlash,
- 9:45initially she posted Tik Toks talking about her like struggles
- 9:50in the industry in her early career, sharing that she earned
- 9:53around 30,000 dollars out of college and she interpreted the
- 9:56salary as part of like the hustle culture.
- 9:59She also mentioned that the position or that her entire
- 10:01organization is self funded through Patreon.
- 10:04And I actually think that was a mistake because while we could
- 10:07probably figure that out or assume like that is obviously
- 10:10how the business is funded for the most part, her audience was
- 10:15already upset with her about this salary.
- 10:17So then to basically tell them like, well, you're not paying me
- 10:20enough to pay this person a livable wage.
- 10:25You know, I think that was a big mistake because it kind of just
- 10:28added like fuel to the fire and people got even more upset.
- 10:31Then amid all of this, she released her episode with
- 10:34Gwyneth Paltrow, like it a podcast episode, which she did
- 10:37note like had to go up. But she was like, I understand
- 10:40how releasing it then seemed like we were just trying to
- 10:42brush this under the rug and like, move on and not address
- 10:44it. But yes, she said like this
- 10:45episode had to go up. And then she made a Patreon like
- 10:50podcast episode basically addressing the missteps.
- 10:53And I thought it was actually quite good.
- 10:54She gave a recap of the whole situation.
- 10:57She kind of reflected on it in this Patreon episode.
- 11:00She admitted the hiring process was mishandled.
- 11:03She said that she had paused recruitment for it to get their
- 11:06shit together. Like HR, they're going to work
- 11:08with recruitment agencies. They're going to be more careful
- 11:11in the future. And she was like, this is still
- 11:13a really small organization. Like, I'm still figuring it out.
- 11:15And to be figuring it out so publicly, like, yeah, we made
- 11:18some mistakes. And honestly, I think that's the
- 11:20best that you can ask for in this situation.
- 11:23You know, getting all of that backlash and initially kind of
- 11:25doubling down. And we see that a lot with
- 11:27creators, so it's not unexpected.
- 11:29But as the backlash grew, instead of being like, Oh my
- 11:32God, fuck you guys. Like, you just don't get this
- 11:35industry. You just don't get it.
- 11:36She took the job posting down and, yeah, made a response and
- 11:39said, OK, Like, you know what? Like some of the stuff you guys
- 11:41said is true and thank you. Like this is a reflection for me
- 11:45and this is what we're going to do and change moving forward.
- 11:48So I thought that was pretty good.
- 11:50All right. And the last story that I have
- 11:51for you guys, of course, Serena Carpenter has released her 7th
- 11:55studio album, Man's Best Friend. I have to know what you guys
- 11:59think about it. I'm just going to recap like
- 12:01what some people are saying about it, like what some of the
- 12:03reviews are saying. But yes, Manchild, the single,
- 12:06like the first single, it's lead single dropped on June 5th and
- 12:09it quickly went to number one in the USUK and Ireland.
- 12:12And then second single Tears was released alongside the album
- 12:16today. As we know, the album cover was
- 12:18very talked about. I actually like that she did not
- 12:22change it. I like that there was no
- 12:24surprise there was no twist because I think if there was a
- 12:27twist, it would have felt like it was in response to the
- 12:30backlash, even if it wasn't. So I like that she stood her
- 12:32ground on it. I don't necessarily love the
- 12:34album cover. Like you guys know, I I did like
- 12:36have a bit of criticism around it.
- 12:38I was like somewhat on that side, but I can appreciate that
- 12:41she didn't veer from it. I know she did release alternate
- 12:43covers, but there was so much speculation that the actual like
- 12:47when it actually came out that it would turn out that the man
- 12:50standing there like grabbing her hair was like actually her or
- 12:52whatever. So I kind of like that.
- 12:54That was not the twist. Reception has been split.
- 12:56I would say overwhelmingly people are enjoying it.
- 12:59However, they're saying it's not as good or like impactful
- 13:03initially as short and sweet. And I think part of that is
- 13:05short and sweet, even though like Sabrina always kind of had
- 13:08this like cutesy sexy thing going on.
- 13:11Short and sweet was so in our faces.
- 13:13And I think it it was the first time that a lot of people who
- 13:16were not already diehard Sabrina fans like realized what her
- 13:19whole shtick is. And we're like, oh, that's kind
- 13:21of fun and like, that's kind of cool and like, what a different
- 13:23vibe, you know? And so I think it was almost
- 13:26like so shocking that it was very impactful in the moment.
- 13:29But now we know what it is. And so, yeah, people are saying
- 13:32it's kind of like a little bit more vanilla.
- 13:34And she hyped it up too much because she was initially saying
- 13:36that this album is not for Pearl clutchers.
- 13:39And then people are like, this is such a vanilla album to be
- 13:41kind of promoting it like that. I don't necessarily necessarily
- 13:44agree with that. I think it's like playful.
- 13:45It's a little bit edgy for me. Sabrina's music always takes a
- 13:50little bit of time to marinate. Even with Short and sweet, I was
- 13:54not fully on board with it. I didn't really like the album
- 13:57to begin with, and then it turned out that it was literally
- 13:59in my Spotify Wrapped as like one of my top albums of the
- 14:02year. So for me, her music, I always
- 14:04need to kind of sit on it. Anyways, guys, that's it for me
- 14:06to scroll today. This was a dry week.
- 14:09It really was. It doesn't happen very often
- 14:12where it's like multiple days. I'm like not much has happened.
- 14:17So hopefully fingers crossed next week.
- 14:19We have a lot going on, but thank you so much for listening
- 14:22regardless. I love you guys.
- 14:23Please remember to rate, review and subscribe Spotify star rate
- 14:27US. It helps us so much.
- 14:28It helps us grow and I will talk to you on Monday.
- 14:31Bye.
