- 0:01Welcome into a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I'm your host Bubba Starts, and with me today is the founder and CEO of the Ponder app,
- 0:09Peyton Walker.
- 0:10Welcome to the show, Peyton.
- 0:11Thank you.
- 0:12Thank you for having me.
- 0:13I'm very excited to be here.
- 0:14I am blessed to have you here.
- 0:17You're a mutual friend of our good friend, Kayla Kaye.
- 0:21And, you said you watched our episode, so I appreciate you watching.
- 0:25But we're here to talk, a little bit about your project today.
- 0:28So before we get into that, why don't you go ahead and, yeah, give us a little, little bit
- 0:33of who you are and what it is you do.
- 0:35Alright.
- 0:36Well, my name is Peyton Walker.
- 0:38Thank you for the introduction.
- 0:39I am the CEO and founder of the newest app on the App Store, Ponder.
- 0:45I'm 26 years old, have completely went from being a veterinary in veterinary school to
- 0:52deciding that's not what I wanted to do, and rescuing animals the passion.
- 0:58It's the goal.
- 0:59Saving the world is our mission.
- 1:01I stream on social media as a future president one hundred is my title on there.
- 1:06And, basically, just connecting world changers all over the world, Either you're an animal
- 1:12lover or you're a world changer, and that's the community that I have built so far.
- 1:17I love it.
- 1:18That's awesome.
- 1:21I think you're our first real, streamer that we've had on the show.
- 1:25So, you grab that title and hang on
- 1:28to it.
- 1:28It's another one
- 1:29of those, paycheck list titles as we were talking about.
- 1:33And for people out there, ponder is p a w n d r.
- 1:39Correct.
- 1:40Tell us more about the app.
- 1:42Yeah.
- 1:42So we are an app that a free app, I'll put that out there, that connects animal shelters to
- 1:48people that are looking to adopt.
- 1:49And so we are the middleman between you finding your forever furry friend and bringing them
- 1:55into your home.
- 1:56We want you to adopt from shelters.
- 1:58There's so many animals in need, and we only work with no kill shelters so you know that the
- 2:03people that you are connecting with through Ponder are good, wholesome, animal loving
- 2:08people.
- 2:09And so not only do we help animals find homes, but we also have pet profiles for current pet
- 2:15owners where you if your ever pet ever gets lost, you can post it to the app, and it'll
- 2:21alert your community and say, hey.
- 2:23Bring them back to me and my address instead of the shelter, and that helps shelters focus on
- 2:28animals that are in need instead of the animals that already have homes.
- 2:33Interesting.
- 2:34So how did you come about I mean, obviously, the first thing that you need to do is to build
- 2:38a network of shelters.
- 2:41Obviously, you mentioned veterinary school, but it's difficult to to build networks like that,
- 2:46I would know.
- 2:49So what kind of, you know, obviously, the inspiration is animal loving, but what started
- 2:55the, hey.
- 2:56I'm gonna start finding all these shelters and bringing them under one umbrella?
- 3:01I just well, I'm a people person.
- 3:04I love animals.
- 3:05Yes.
- 3:05That's true.
- 3:06But I am a people person.
- 3:08I love connecting with people, especially good, wholesome people.
- 3:13And you can find that in the animal community.
- 3:15And people really know the love and and the passion that comes with, you know, owning your
- 3:20own animal and trying to find these homes and stuff.
- 3:23And so for me, it was, I'm good at networking.
- 3:27I'm good at people.
- 3:28I can connect easily.
- 3:30And if I can use my talent to help others, then I can create an entirely different category of
- 3:37pet rescue.
- 3:38And so there are other apps out there, but none are like Ponder.
- 3:42We only work with shelters.
- 3:44We only our whole mission is to just help people with the love of animals.
- 3:49And so it's it's been a journey, but it's it's so rewarding.
- 3:53And it's the people we've met along the way is just so easy.
- 3:57Shelters are so willing to just be like, oh, yeah.
- 3:59I'll sign up.
- 4:00Absolutely.
- 4:01So it's it's really cool.
- 4:03Right.
- 4:04Well, because they're already doing so much caring for the animals that are there, they
- 4:07don't have the time to run an app on the side or to run a Facebook page to get it out about
- 4:12all these animals that they're trying like, it's a full time job just trying to care for
- 4:17the animals that are in the shelters.
- 4:19We know these shelters are always full.
- 4:21If we had one in Tyndall, it would be full as well instead all the cats are in my backyard.
- 4:27So I understand.
- 4:29The need was there.
- 4:30And I just love that you took initiative and said, hey, I'm good at this.
- 4:35I'm good at connecting people.
- 4:37How do I take this to the next level?
- 4:39What's it like designing an app to to do that?
- 4:44It is a process.
- 4:45I will I will tell you that if, you know, somebody out there is like, I've been thinking
- 4:49about developing an app.
- 4:50You should look into it for sure.
- 4:52Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
- 4:55But, basically, I had to find a developer and because I I can't code myself, and I'm learning
- 5:01more and more as I'm working with my team.
- 5:04But when I first started in 2020, I was young, naive, and just ready to launch.
- 5:10I just I wanted to get this together.
- 5:12Eager.
- 5:12I wanted to help.
- 5:13I was eager.
- 5:14Yes.
- 5:14That's yeah.
- 5:15Thank you.
- 5:16And I actually end up getting scammed for $8.
- 5:19Oh.
- 5:20So so that
- 5:21was when you're 21.
- 5:22Yeah.
- 5:23That was rough.
- 5:24That was rough.
- 5:25And, you know, it took me about ten minutes of just straight crying.
- 5:29And I was like, if I'm gonna let one thing stop me from achieving my dreams, then I'm not meant
- 5:34to run this entire company.
- 5:36And it kept I kept pushing.
- 5:38And so I ended up finding, a program or a a company in Utah called Outcode Software, and
- 5:46they are wonderful.
- 5:47I'm still working with them.
- 5:48We've been working together for about two years.
- 5:50I have my own team of developers.
- 5:52And, basically, I hold the reins, and they tell me, you know, what we what would make it better
- 5:59or what they see in their analytics and their apps that have already been designed.
- 6:04And so I just had to put together the my ideas in my head, put it on paper, and send it off to
- 6:10them, and they made it a reality.
- 6:12That's incredible.
- 6:14It's definitely something that we've thought about with the scene projects because we're all
- 6:18about connecting as well, and, obviously, we're all on our phones all the time.
- 6:22And while the, you know, the social giants, have given us an audience out there in the
- 6:28world, a little bit.
- 6:30It's very hard to communicate with people that way.
- 6:32Right?
- 6:32It's really difficult to try and make sure that the people that you want to see your stuff on
- 6:38Facebook actually see it, you know, even more so on other apps.
- 6:42Right?
- 6:43So it's awesome that you were able to find a team, and I'm sorry that you had to go through
- 6:48some tribulations, but that is that is life, is it not?
- 6:52It is.
- 6:52It really is.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:54It wouldn't have been, you know, it wouldn't have been this awesome journey and this awesome
- 6:57story without a serious hiccup.
- 7:00So it was a bummer, but we made it through it.
- 7:02And here we are today, and you can download it for free right now.
- 7:05So it's it's really cool.
- 7:07Well and that brings me to my next question then is how do you kind of pay for, you know
- 7:12obviously, recouping your your money on on the cost of the app is difficult to do, and you're
- 7:17not in it for the money anyway.
- 7:19But are you operating similar to, like, a nonprofit?
- 7:22Are you your own nonprofit that's operating?
- 7:24Or with a free app, I'm just I'm curious how the business side of it now actually works.
- 7:29The service side of it seems freaking awesome.
- 7:33Yes.
- 7:33That's a good question.
- 7:34Thank you.
- 7:36Yes.
- 7:36So I my husband and I have funded the app ourselves.
- 7:39So we're about it's a % paid off.
- 7:42So if you're if you are looking to start an app, it'll cost you pretty close near $50,000,
- 7:48and so keep that in mind if you're ideal.
- 7:50Same projects ain't getting to know
- 7:51an app anytime soon.
- 7:54I got a guy.
- 7:55Let me know.
- 7:56And so the way that it works is another feature that Ponder has is that we love to advertise
- 8:03for pet related businesses.
- 8:06So you can a pet related business can create a profile for free, and that gets you on the map.
- 8:11And once you're on the map, you can decide if advertising through Ponder is something that
- 8:16you're interested in.
- 8:17And so for $20.25 dollars a month, you can advertise on the app.
- 8:22The ads run twenty four seven, or you can pay $250 for the year.
- 8:27And, basically, how Ponder runs is it's just like Tinder, but for animals and animal
- 8:32shelters.
- 8:33And so you put in a filter.
- 8:34So you're you're looking for a two year old German shepherd.
- 8:37It will search every shelter in The US, and you will swipe through those German shepherds.
- 8:42Every five swipes is an advertisement.
- 8:45I think it's five to seven swipes is an advertisement.
- 8:47And then you can either, pay a subscription to say, I don't really want ads, or you can just
- 8:53keep going, and the ads are just as easy to pass.
- 8:56You know, we're not gonna we're not gonna stick you on an ad because we don't want to you know,
- 9:00I don't pay for Spotify, so I've I'd be listening to music.
- 9:04And I just gotta I just gotta, you know, tough it out through that Charmin Ultra Strong toilet
- 9:09paper ad.
- 9:10But we don't want you to do that.
- 9:12We want you to be able to swipe and say, I'm not interested in that ad or say, oh, you know
- 9:16what?
- 9:17I am looking for a veterinarian.
- 9:18Perfect.
- 9:19I just found one through Ponder.
- 9:20And so that's how we generate revenue.
- 9:22Awesome.
- 9:23So, yeah, running an advertising model, but also having the subscription if you don't want
- 9:27to see ads.
- 9:28Okay.
- 9:28So a little bit of recruitment.
- 9:30Obviously, it's a it's a slow process.
- 9:32I'm sure there as well.
- 9:34We hope that, this this episode brings some awareness to your company and some of these pet
- 9:39companies, see what you're doing and and you can drive the price up of ads a little bit.
- 9:45I I think it's it's too low.
- 9:49You're probably just happy to get anything to to nick off that $50 that you've invested into
- 9:55it.
- 9:56Just amazing.
- 9:58So talk about so you're you're a Twitch streamer.
- 10:01I I know you're a gamer as well.
- 10:03Do your worlds kind of crossover online where a lot of your followers know about the process?
- 10:09Obviously, I mean, if you're online a lot, people have watched you go through this
- 10:13journey.
- 10:14Do you have a lot of your, you know, followers of your Twitch streams that are now users of
- 10:19your app?
- 10:20Yes.
- 10:21It's actually, the first people that were downloading the app were obviously friends and
- 10:25family that were close to me, but users all over the world that I have connected with in my
- 10:30video games.
- 10:31And so when you open the app, you can see other pet finders around the world, and, you know, we
- 10:36have people in Belgium, Australia, California.
- 10:40And those are all people that I have connected with through the game.
- 10:42And so it's really cool.
- 10:44You know, I'd I'll do live streams of they have, like, a just chatting category, and it's
- 10:49literally just me working on CEO stuff.
- 10:52And my my viewers love it.
- 10:54They love to see the process of me going through and, you know, what it takes to put the
- 10:58advertisements together and connect and network and and things like that.
- 11:02And so I really try to involve my community because I want people to know that if you know,
- 11:08you can be a world changer.
- 11:09It doesn't matter what age you are, and your dreams are absolutely possible.
- 11:13And so watch me procure my dreams, and I hope I can help you in the future.
- 11:18And that's that's definitely everybody definitely feels loved when they are in the
- 11:23future president's servers, so it's cool.
- 11:28I I probably need to start a Twitch stream and start doing that.
- 11:32I spend so much of my time sitting in this chair just working, you know, designing flyers
- 11:37or or connecting with people, networking, talking on the phone, chatting online, building
- 11:43websites, doing all these things.
- 11:45And to me, I've always thought I'm I'm quite a bit older than you are too, so I didn't grow up
- 11:49in this era of streaming.
- 11:51Yeah.
- 11:52I didn't find my life or at least the behind the scenes part of it to be that interesting,
- 11:57but listening to you now, I I you may be changing my mind.
- 12:01It is.
- 12:01It really is.
- 12:02I mean, even like a time lapse of you putting together a flyer or it's you know, people think
- 12:08that that kind of content really isn't gonna be engaging.
- 12:12That's all your followers wanna see.
- 12:14They wanna see you know, I have Kayla.
- 12:16Kay is an is an artist, and then her cousin, my best friend, his name his name is Lil' Siren.
- 12:23And he will make music.
- 12:25He'll make beats from scratch, and he doesn't post any of that stuff.
- 12:28And I say post it.
- 12:29People want to see the progress.
- 12:31They wanna see you know, you you came up with a word and you decided that's gonna be a song.
- 12:36How did you make that song?
- 12:38And that's the exact same thing with building a company.
- 12:40We wanna see how you did it and give us advice on how we can further, you know, better
- 12:45ourselves.
- 12:47So it's cool.
- 12:47And and we're kind of starting something similar to that.
- 12:50I guess I am starting, you know, a subscription based community, the Midwest Original Music
- 12:54organization.
- 12:55I also have the Midwest Podcasting organization that we're we're getting up off the ground.
- 13:00And it it is to bring more on the education side, to to definitely show people, but more
- 13:05show people that are interested in learning how to do it themselves, not necessarily in just
- 13:09watching it for entertainment purposes.
- 13:11You you have inspired me already that I better go set up the Twitch stream and to start
- 13:16showing people behind the curtain a little bit.
- 13:19And, I mean, I'm I'm here all the time.
- 13:21Right?
- 13:21I I'm shooting two or three podcast episodes a day.
- 13:24I'm already on, you know, online and with the camera on, you know, 90 or more all the time.
- 13:30So it's nothing to me to to just do that.
- 13:34And I'm sure being consistent is one of the biggest things in that is showing up and being
- 13:39there.
- 13:40My problem is is that I'm usually not in, I leave the office at 04:00 when most people
- 13:44would be starting to kinda tap in for entertainment.
- 13:47Right?
- 13:47That's yeah.
- 13:48That that is very true.
- 13:50And that's that's so crucial with, you know, what we do is, you know, that especially with
- 13:56social media out there, it's it's such a good tool to use.
- 13:59And so it's it really is cool.
- 14:01And just exactly what you said, you know, you're sitting there anyway.
- 14:04Your community, I can tell you right now, you started at Twitch, your community would draw
- 14:09very fast.
- 14:10I promise you that.
- 14:11Your energy and your your kindness, it will spark.
- 14:15It will.
- 14:15Well, and I forget that the people that are there, right, I'm thinking of my community
- 14:20existing and not a lot of those people would tap in because it's not really their thing.
- 14:25But the community of people that are already on Twitch and are engaging with content like that,
- 14:30those are the ones that we're really after.
- 14:32And to change my change my idea about what Twitch is because I'm not a streamer, I'm not a
- 14:38gamer, I haven't spent a lot of time digging into that community, but I I will now.
- 14:42Now I got homework pain.
- 14:43Thanks.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:45It's cool.
- 14:46Actually, a lot of people do game Twitch.
- 14:48That was what it was made for.
- 14:50But the music industry is taking over Twitch rapidly.
- 14:53I mean, that you first when you pull up Twitch and you make your account and and the first
- 14:57things you'll see are people, like, playing the violin or playing the piano and just talking to
- 15:02their viewers, and it's it is really cool.
- 15:04So, yeah, I I will definitely tune in.
- 15:07So Alright.
- 15:08Well, as long as I know you're gonna be there, I am jumping on.
- 15:12I am setting up the Twitch.
- 15:13You know what?
- 15:14I think I have the channels.
- 15:15Right?
- 15:15I have the account set up.
- 15:17I just I'm invested in so many things.
- 15:19Right?
- 15:19My time is going so many places.
- 15:21And because I am a bit older, I'll be 39 in a few weeks, most of my crowd, right, are on
- 15:28Facebook.
- 15:29Right?
- 15:29That's where I have the followers, and I've built up these pages and groups and things.
- 15:32But the engagement there is so crap that I've I've really pulled away from it.
- 15:38And not that I'm looking for somewhere else to put my time, but we're definitely looking into
- 15:43pulling new people to what we're doing and to keep growing this this beautiful thing that
- 15:49we've built.
- 15:50Absolutely.
- 15:51Yes.
- 15:51And that's that's another cool thing about Twitch is when you record a video, it saves to
- 15:55the platform, and you can take that content and spread it out on all social media platforms.
- 16:01And so making clips on Instagram and and stuff like that.
- 16:04And so but it's it is it is really cool, and and you're doing something really special.
- 16:08So I would I would encourage it for sure.
- 16:10Alright.
- 16:11Well, you've convinced me.
- 16:14Peyton, any why don't you go ahead and plug everything before you go, make sure people know
- 16:18where to find you and connect with you, and and I'll let you get out of here.
- 16:22Okay.
- 16:22Thank you.
- 16:23Yes.
- 16:23Peyton Walker on Facebook.
- 16:25You can just search up p a w n d r, ponder, or come directly to me.
- 16:31Future president one hundred, if you are on any social medias, we have those are my two
- 16:36different accounts, Ponder and future president.
- 16:38And so if you have any questions or anything or you're having trouble with the app, which you
- 16:43won't because that's why I designed it.
- 16:46But if you do, feel free to come and talk to me.
- 16:49Otherwise, we have more information at www.ponderapp.info, and that is
- 16:55www.ponderapp.info.
- 16:58So thank you guys so much for having me on, and I cannot wait to see this live on the air.
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:05Well, I'm gonna turn it around quick as soon as I get that Twitch stream up.
- 17:08So, Payton Walker, thanks for being part of the scene.
- 17:12Thank you so much.
- 17:13Have a good rest of your day.
- 17:15You too.
